Ward 8 residents react to DC Councilmember Trayon White being arrested by the FBI
Transcript
00:00The Ward 8 Council members arrest happened earlier this afternoon.
00:04Witnesses tell WUSA 9 the FBI surrounded the area, went into an apartment complex on K Street in Navy Yard.
00:12Tonight, our Leslie Moreno has more on how this arrest all unfolded.
00:18The arrest happened here behind me at the 10K Hill South Apartments in Navy Yard.
00:24Residents we spoke with say they saw those FBI agents walk into the building.
00:29You can still see Ward 8 Council Member Trayon White's vehicle parked outside the complex.
00:35Chairman Phil Mendelsohn's office confirmed the arrest with WUSA 9.
00:39A spokesperson says Mendelsohn was not aware of an investigation and does not have any information on any charges.
00:47Residents we spoke with here say they saw several undercover detectives and they watched as they entered the building with long guns.
00:56Residents tell us FBI agents went up to the penthouse suite.
01:00Tonight, constituents say it's shocking and they want to know why their council member was arrested.
01:06Yeah, it definitely looked like it was something pretty serious.
01:08They had the block shut off for a good time, but yeah, it seemed like they had a good handle.
01:12We only saw really the second part of it, but yeah, it's pretty crazy stuff.
01:17It was very surprising because it's just an average Sunday and it was pretty wild to see everybody in the lobby here.
01:25It's usually pretty quiet, so it was kind of a shock.
01:28It'll be interesting to read really what happened, what the charges are going to be.
01:32Council Member White was first elected to represent Ward 8 in 2016.
01:36He is seeking a third term and just won the Democratic primary in June.
01:40According to our partners at the Washington Post, White was fined $40,000 by the D.C. Office of Campaign Finance
01:48for failing to provide documentation to explain thousands of dollars of expenditures related to his 2020 re-election bid and his 2022 mayoral run.
01:59The Post reports White appealed the fines related to his 2020 race, but the 2022 case is still outstanding.
02:07We did reach out to the council member's office and his campaign staff and have not heard back yet.
02:13A spokesperson for the FBI Washington field office had no comment on the incident as far as why Council Member Trayon White was arrested.
02:23That is still unclear.
02:25In Southeast D.C., Liz Moreno, WUSA 9.
