00:00Hope is not the absence of fear
00:02But the courage in ourselves to face our fears. As a child, I did not know what it meant to feel at home.
00:11I constantly sought love and a feeling of belonging
00:14My parents got a divorce and my father was in prison
00:18I was raised by a legal guardian living in a family not of my own. I was constantly walking on thin ice
00:26My guardian was very strict on my sister and me
00:30Every time we did something wrong, they would not go easy on us
00:35but I always felt like I owed my life to my guardians and
00:40I felt compelled to accept their transgressions because of what they had done for us
00:46however
00:47The word trauma never resonated with us until a decade later into our adulthood
00:53I was enveloped in a fragile sense of safety and family
00:59As a child, I constantly felt the need to seek their affection to obtain a sense of belonging
01:08I tried to find love but ended up in all the wrong places
01:15When I was 16, my world came crashing down
01:20There was a legal dispute over our custody
01:23This was made worse when my sister ran away from home
01:28Life was a mess. I did not have a home and no one offered me a listening ear.
01:36I wallowed in self-pity and pushed people away
01:41from friends to strangers and teachers
01:44One by one, they left and the circle of people around me got smaller
01:51I was desperate for help. So I turned to counselling
01:55There, I was diagnosed with panic disorder and PTSD
02:00Which left me more confused and in further disarray
02:04One day
02:06Something snapped within me
02:08This is it, I thought
02:11I was at the edge of the roof
02:13At that moment, my teacher Miss Jocelyn held me back
02:18She hugged me tightly
02:20There's still hope, she said
02:23She looked me in the eye and said, I see you
02:27At that moment, I felt loved
02:31Miss Jocelyn reignited the fire within me
02:34I wanted to live and find meaning in life
02:37But it was so trying
02:40There were so many moments I failed and fell back to suicide attempts
02:45I wanted the pain to go away
02:48I knew that I needed help, respite and love
02:51I opened up and allowed people to enter my life
02:55I rebuilt from the ground up
02:58Each time I fell, I emerged stronger
03:03Though I have been seeking recovery my whole life
03:07My journey is far from over
03:10As a Circles of Resilience member
03:13I'm still a work in progress
03:15But I am also improving every day
03:18By helping others in this process
