We have all been shocked by the horrific rape-murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata, but can we be truly surprised? Sexual crimes against women happen so frequently in our country that we have almost become desensitized to it. But the brutality that took place inside the seminar hall of RG Kar hospital is bone chilling. The anger of the people has been compounded by accusations of a botched investigation by Kolkata Police, leading to the case being transferred to CBI. But what really happened that night, what did the Kolkata Police do, and what do we know so far? In this video, I present the full facts of the case so you can make up your own mind.

00:00About 22 minutes later, at 11.15 a.m., the same person calls the parents again and tells them that their daughter f***ed them.
00:09During the re-examination process, they focus on one person
00:13who was wearing shorts and a sleeveless t-shirt and was roaming around in the third floor seminar hall at 4 a.m.
00:18He was wearing a CCTV camera with Bluetooth earphones on his shoulder.
00:22The worst part is that the principal tried to blame the victim.
00:26He said that it's irresponsible for a girl to go to the seminar hall alone at night.
00:32But the Bengal government didn't accept his resignation.
00:35Instead, he was transferred to Calcutta National Medical College, where he became the principal.
00:40But isn't it the responsibility of the Bengal government and the Kolkata police to stop violence and maintain law and order?
00:46There has been such a heinous incident in the country that you will have goosebumps.
00:50Millions of brothers in our country will tie Rakhi to protect their sisters.
00:55But who? Our society.
00:57The incident in Kolkata has shown how our society is failing women.
01:01Where the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee should have stopped such incidents,
01:05she instead started a protest march in her own state.
01:07And instead of protecting people, the Kolkata police are sending notices on Twitter.
01:11What's going on in this country? What happened in this incident? And who's responsible?
01:15I want to give you the full details.
01:19R.G.Kar Medical College is based in the Shyambazar locality of North Kolkata.
01:23It was built in 1886 and is one of the oldest medical colleges in the country.
01:28And this incident happened in this old hospital, which shook the entire country.
01:328th August, 11 p.m.
01:35A 31-year-old post-graduate trainee was on a 36-hour shift.
01:39Post-graduate trainees are basically medical doctors who are doing a master's degree in specialization.
01:45And for these trainees, 24 hours, 36 hours, and 72 hours shifts are very common.
01:51During these shifts, they have to be on call continuously.
01:54That means they can rest, but as soon as a call rings, they have to come back to work.
01:59At night, she spoke to her parents and said goodnight on the phone.
02:02After that, she started her medical rounds in the hospital, which was very common for her.
02:07At 2 p.m., she took a break from her medical rounds and had dinner with four colleagues.
02:13One was an intern, one was a house staffer, and two were post-graduate trainees.
02:17In the third-floor seminar hall of the college's parliamentary department,
02:21they ordered food and started watching the Olympics on TV, where they were supporting Neeraj Chopra.
02:27They were supporting Neeraj, and he won a silver medal that day.
02:31The seminar room is a 40x30-feet room, where 50 people can sit.
02:36To enter the seminar room, you have to pass a corridor from the third-floor lift,
02:41where CCTV cameras were installed.
02:44But there were no cameras installed in the seminar room.
02:46As soon as Neeraj Chopra's event was over, everyone else left the seminar room.
02:50But due to fatigue, this girl slept there because she had a 36-hour shift.
02:54At 3 a.m., an intern wakes her up to show her a report.
02:59But after seeing the report, she goes back to sleep.
03:02This was the last time she was seen alive.
03:06The next day, at 7.30 a.m., a 31-year-old post-graduate trainee's body was found
03:12in the same hall with about 10 injury marks.
03:15Her body was semi-naked, and blood was oozing from her eyes and private parts.
03:20At 10.53 a.m., the hospital's assistant superintendent calls the girl's parents
03:26and tells them that they need to rush to the hospital because their daughter is unwell.
03:31About 22 minutes later, at 11.15 a.m., the same person calls the parents again
03:37and tells them that their daughter has raped them.
03:40After that, they said, your daughter has raped them.
03:44Come quickly.
03:46A family member of the victim told us that the hospital made the girl's parents
03:50wait for 3 hours before seeing the body.
03:52They kept us standing there for 3 hours.
03:56And when they gave us permission, the father was told to go inside and take a photo
04:01and then come out.
04:03When the father saw the condition of his daughter, he was devastated.
04:07He said, my daughter has been raped and murdered.
04:10She's gone. We can't bring her back.
04:13But at least we should get justice.
04:16All the links and sources I've used are public.
04:19You can find them in the Google Docs in the description.
04:21After the incident, the police commissioner of Kolkata, Vineet Goyal,
04:25and state health secretary, N.S. Nigam, arrive at the hospital for an investigation.
04:29They also find out that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has spoken to the family
04:33and promised them speedy justice.
04:36The protest has begun.
04:40Many doctors and post-graduate trainees have started a protest
04:44and have demanded an autopsy.
04:46After this, protests start all over the country.
04:54On the morning of August 9, the first police officers arrive at the crime scene.
04:57Because their duty is in the outpost of the hospital, they can reach there quickly.
05:02They immediately inform the Tala police station, which has a hospital in its jurisdiction.
05:08An officer's team arrives at the police station, including detectives from the Homicidal Wing.
05:13At 11.30 a.m., forensic department experts arrive at the police station
05:18and a case of unnatural death is registered.
05:21After the family's police complaint, the case is changed to a rape and murder case.
05:26Then, the police team installs 15 computer screens in a room of the hospital
05:31and starts checking all the CCTV footage.
05:34After this, the investigation begins.
05:36That night, five people are on night duty.
05:39They are separated and interrogated one by one.
05:43Because the statements of these five people are the same,
05:46they are released from police custody.
05:49But during the re-examination process, they focus on one person
05:53who was wearing shorts and sleeveless t-shirts in the third-floor seminar hall at 4 a.m.
05:59On his shoulder, there are Bluetooth earphones in the CCTV camera.
06:03This detail is important. You'll know why after a while.
06:06A police official from the hospital outpost identifies this person.
06:10His name is Sanjoy Roy.
06:12His cell phone location is tracked and it is found that he is located in a police barrack
06:17in Salt Lake, Kolkata.
06:19The next day, on 10th August, a police team is sent to arrest him.
06:24During this investigation, they find Bluetooth earphones in the crime scene.
06:29Sanjoy is asked by the police where his Bluetooth earphones are.
06:34Sanjoy says he's lost.
06:36But when the police turns on Sanjoy's Bluetooth,
06:39the phone's Bluetooth is automatically connected to the Bluetooth earphones
06:43he found in the crime scene.
06:45After this, Sanjoy becomes the first suspect in the police record.
06:48And his interrogation begins.
06:51On the night of the incident, when Sanjoy entered the hospital for the first time,
06:54he was drunk.
06:56At 11 p.m., he leaves the hospital to drink more.
07:00He returns at 4 a.m.
07:02The Kolkata police say Sanjoy has confessed.
07:05But for the sake of evidence in the investigation,
07:07they found several injury marks on Sanjoy's body.
07:11They also tried to match the skin samples found on the victim's nails
07:14with Sanjoy's DNA samples.
07:17The official forensic report hasn't been released yet.
07:20But who is Sanjoy Roy?
07:22Sanjoy's family, including his mother, sister, and neighbor,
07:26call him a thug.
07:27He has two sisters.
07:29His elder sister is an assistant sub-inspector at the Kolkata police.
07:32And his second sister is a civic volunteer.
07:34His sister said,
07:36I don't want to talk about him at all
07:38because he's a thug in our family's history.
07:41I can't even say a decent thing about him.
07:44Even if he gets hanged,
07:46we won't even come to collect his body.
07:48In 2019, Sanjoy joined the Kolkata Police Disaster Management Group
07:51as a civil volunteer.
07:53Civil volunteers are those people
07:55who help in police traffic management
07:57or disaster response.
07:59They're contract workers and get paid Rs. 12,000 per month.
08:02They're not officially from the Kolkata police.
08:04But Sanjoy officially introduced himself as a Kolkata policeman.
08:09In fact, his bike also had a Kolkata police sticker.
08:12And this wasn't the first time Sanjoy came to the RGK campus.
08:15Two years ago, he was a cook there.
08:17But he disappeared for two years.
08:19And when he came back,
08:21he introduced himself as a Kolkata policeman.
08:24Hospital staff told us that Sanjoy used to come there
08:27and he was close to Principal Sandeep Ghosh.
08:30In fact, Sanjoy used this to earn money.
08:33He used to take money from patients
08:35and promised them that he'd admit them in the hospital.
08:38Sanjoy is still a suspect
08:40because there's no official forensic report.
08:42So there's no conclusive evidence
08:44in the CBI or police investigation
08:46against Sanjoy.
08:48But this isn't the first police complaint against Sanjoy.
08:51On May 13, 2023, his wife filed a police complaint
08:54because Sanjoy beat her up when she was 3 months pregnant.
08:58A year earlier, on August 8, 2022,
09:01another police complaint was filed against Sanjoy.
09:05But the police didn't take any action against him.
09:07In fact, he worked with the police as a civic volunteer.
09:11Durga Devi, Sanjoy's mother-in-law,
09:13said that he used to beat her up.
09:15But if the police had taken action against him,
09:18this incident wouldn't have happened.
09:20This behavior is very common among rapists.
09:23Remember, rape isn't about sex.
09:25It's about power and control.
09:27A rapist doesn't even feel sorry.
09:30Instead, he blames the victim.
09:32Take Mukesh Singh,
09:34who was sentenced to death in the Nirbhaya incident.
09:36What did he say?
09:38You can't clap with one hand.
09:40You have to clap with both hands.
09:42If a girl is a good girl,
09:44she doesn't cry at night.
09:48Boys are more responsible for rape than girls.
09:53Three months ago, I released a full video
09:55on the psychology of rapists.
09:57Watch this video after this one.
10:00You'll find the link in the pinned comment and description.
10:03Even after Sanjoy's arrest, many people aren't happy.
10:06Some say that Sanjoy didn't do it alone.
10:08The real culprit is being hidden.
10:11Because the shocking details in the autopsy report
10:14showed that this behavior can't be done by one person.
10:18On 9th August, at 4.40 pm,
10:20the report showed that many hairs were found on the mattress.
10:24Apart from this, there are many gruesome details in the report
10:27that I don't want to discuss in this video.
10:29Like many external injuries found in the body.
10:32But Dr. Subarna Goswami, who is a former student of RG,
10:35read the report.
10:37He said that multiple penetrations were done in the report.
10:40This means that only one person was involved in this.
10:43Some details circulating on the internet,
10:45like 150 grams of semen found in the vagina,
10:48are completely wrong.
10:49Times of India has published a fact-check.
10:51You can pause the video and read it.
10:53Dr. Raja Dhar from CK Birla Hospital in Kolkata
10:56also talked about this.
10:58According to the details and reports,
11:00more than one person was involved in this crime.
11:03His statement, which can be found in the source document,
11:06says that according to the crime details,
11:08multiple people were involved in this heinous act.
11:11This is why the investigation hasn't been completed yet.
11:14But the atmosphere goes against the Mamata Banerjee government
11:18when people find out what the government has done
11:21to the college principal.
11:23RG's principal is Sandeep Ghosh.
11:25As I told you earlier,
11:27the victim's family was told that the girl committed suicide.
11:30Because a principal is the administrative head of a college,
11:34the responsibility lies with the principal.
11:36And it's hard to guess
11:38that the principal didn't get the approval
11:41before contacting the victim's family.
11:43The disgusting thing is that
11:45the principal tried to blame the victim.
11:47He said that a girl going to a seminar hall alone
11:51late at night is very irresponsible.
11:54So a medical college principal is like those people
11:57who blame girls for their atrocities.
12:00After saying such a disgusting thing,
12:02a protest against the principal began.
12:04But no action was taken against him.
12:06Finally, three days later,
12:08he resigned on August 12.
12:10But the Bengal government didn't accept his resignation.
12:13Instead, he was transferred to Calcutta National Medical College
12:17where he became the principal.
12:19Dr. Sandeep Ghosh stepped down as the principal of RGK Medical College.
12:23The West Bengal government appointed him
12:25as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital.
12:29So if you don't take responsibility
12:31and say such a disgusting thing,
12:33you won't be removed from your position.
12:35Instead, you'll be made the principal of another medical college.
12:38Wow!
12:39To stop his new appointment,
12:41doctors, students, and junior interns
12:43closed the doors of the office
12:45so that the principal can't take his new position.
12:48Two senior members of the Trinamool Congress
12:50went there to calm the students.
12:52They were MLA Suvarna Kamal
12:54and State Minister Javed Ahmed Khan.
12:56But the students said,
12:57why are you here to calm us down?
12:59If you care so much,
13:00why did you make Sandeep Ghosh the new principal?
13:03Sandeep Ghosh has close ties with the Trinamool Congress.
13:06Many doctors have accused him
13:08of running the hospital as if it's his own kingdom.
13:11Akhtar Ali, the former deputy superintendent of RGK,
13:15said that Sandeep is one of the most corrupt people.
13:18He's a corrupt man.
13:20He failed the students in RGK Medical College.
13:23He took 20% commission from the tender order maker.
13:27Whatever work was done in RGK,
13:29he took all the money.
13:31Many students who have worked under Sandeep
13:34say that this principal is no less than a dictator.
13:36A medical intern said in an interview
13:39that Dr. Sandeep Ghosh can do anything against you.
13:42He uses his political connections
13:44to threaten students if they don't listen to him.
13:47He has failed many students
13:49because they have raised their voices against him.
13:52The victim's family's lawyer said
13:54that the government transferred the principal
13:56instead of removing it.
13:58How can we trust the government?
14:00That's why Ghosh transferred the case to the CBI
14:03because people lost their trust in the Kolkata police.
14:06To understand why people don't trust
14:08the West Bengal government
14:10for an independent investigation,
14:12you need to understand how Bengal's politics work.
14:15A few years ago, I made a detailed video on this.
14:18I strongly recommend you watch it after this video.
14:21The link is in the description.
14:23I'll also add it at the end of the video.
14:25West Bengal's politics is controlled
14:27by the Trinamool Congress,
14:29which they learned from the Communist Party.
14:31This means that whether it's university politics
14:33or panchayat politics,
14:35the Trinamool Congress rules everywhere.
14:37That's why many people can't even speak against them.
14:40I won't go into details in this video.
14:42You can watch it.
14:43But because of this, people don't believe
14:45that the Bengal government
14:47will be able to conduct an independent investigation.
14:49On August 13, this issue reached the court.
14:52The victim's family's lawyer argued
14:54that the case should be transferred to the CBI immediately
14:57or the evidence would be destroyed.
14:59The lawyer made several arguments.
15:01For example, the family was told in a phone call
15:03that it was a suicide case.
15:05Then they had to wait for 3 hours to see the body.
15:07Then there was evidence of rape and murder.
15:10But the first case filed by the Kolkata police
15:13was of unnatural death.
15:15Then Dr. Sandeep Ghosh was transferred
15:17instead of being removed.
15:19The Calcutta High Court heard the arguments
15:21and transferred the case to the CBI immediately.
15:24But the CBI didn't even start its work
15:26when a video went viral.
15:28The seminar room where the victim was raped and murdered
15:32was suddenly being renovated.
15:35A student protester asked
15:37why the crime scene was being demolished
15:40when an investigation was going on.
15:42There's been such a big incident in your college
15:44and the CBI is about to start an investigation.
15:47Then why is there a need to renovate?
15:49What's the rush to renovate?
15:51Other than this, there were other rumors on social media
15:54like a sex and drug racket.
15:56Since there's no concrete evidence
15:59in any official report,
16:01I won't talk about such things in this video.
16:05The public trusted the administration
16:08that they'd be able to conduct an investigation.
16:11On August 14, they planned a silent protest.
16:14Before the Independence Day,
16:16Reclaim the Night marches took place all over the country
16:19to show that women can also take part in public spaces.
16:23We don't just want security at night,
16:25we want security during the day as well.
16:27We're visited by people during the day.
16:29We want our safety.
16:31We want the safety of our girls.
16:34This protest was peaceful all over the country.
16:36But suddenly, the protest took a very dangerous turn
16:39near the RGKAR hospital.
16:41After midnight,
16:43violence broke out at the RGKAR hospital.
16:45Many unknown people broke the barricades,
16:48manhandled doctors,
16:50and demolished hospital property.
16:52Emergency beds where patients were present were demolished
16:55and doctors, nurses, and police officers had to flee.
16:59Protesters said that these unknown people
17:02had come to the protest site,
17:04but no one knew who they were.
17:06Many of them were trying to climb up to the girls' hostel.
17:10A panic-inducing environment was created.
17:12At 2 a.m., Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goel arrived
17:16and blamed the media.
17:18He said that the media had created a distrust
17:21between the police and civil society.
17:24Malicious media campaign.
17:27Kolkata police has lost the trust of the media.
17:30Because of this.
17:31Whether it is the social media and this.
17:33BJP State Secretary Suvendu Adhikari said
17:36that these goons belonged to the Trinamool Congress.
17:39Whereas Mamta Banerjee said
17:41that these goons belonged to the CPIM and BJP.
17:44The Kolkata Police has now used Twitter
17:46to identify these people.
17:48But we still don't know who these people were
17:52and what motivated them to enter the hospital.
17:55Many people said that these people were sent
17:57to destroy evidence.
17:59The hospital was definitely demolished.
18:01But the Kolkata Police clarified that
18:04the crime scene was a seminar room
18:06and that it wasn't damaged.
18:08But isn't it the responsibility of the Bengal government
18:11and the Kolkata Police to stop violence
18:13and maintain law and order?
18:14Instead, Mamta Banerjee announced
18:16that she's going to protest on 19th August.
18:19Why?
18:20Because she wants the rapist to be given capital punishment.
18:23The punishment of death.
18:24Instead, the rapist should scold the police.
18:26In your state, a gruesome rape took place
18:29in the state capitol.
18:30The principal, the administrative head
18:32of the medical college, wasn't removed.
18:34Instead, he was transferred.
18:36This case is then transferred to the CBI.
18:38And then you demand speedy justice
18:40and capital punishment.
18:42The police is yours, the government is yours.
18:44So what's this drama about?
18:46But Mamta Banerjee, who's demanding
18:48a death penalty in her protest,
18:49is a way to divert you.
18:51Don't fall for her words.
18:53Like her, there are many people on social media
18:55who say that rapes are happening in the country
18:57because the punishment isn't strict.
18:59They say, look at countries like North Korea,
19:01Afghanistan, and Saudi Arabia
19:03where rapists are severely punished.
19:05If this happens in India,
19:07then India will become a safe and developed country.
19:11Right?
19:12Absolutely wrong.
19:13This is an absurd argument.
19:15Let me tell you why.
19:16In India, 97% of rapes
19:18are committed by victims who know the criminal.
19:21A rapist is a friend, family member,
19:23or a neighbor.
19:25If a rapist is a family member,
19:27and there's a death penalty,
19:29then what do you think will happen to the girl?
19:31The girl will be told to keep quiet
19:33and solve the problem in the family.
19:35The poor girl will die.
19:37There are two things in a criminal's mind.
19:40First, how strict the punishment will be.
19:42And second, what are the chances
19:44of getting caught?
19:46Our country is obsessed with punishment.
19:49We're obsessed with hanging people
19:51and shooting them.
19:52We forget about the second thing.
19:54You think rapists don't know
19:56they'll be punished?
19:57They know.
19:58But they're confident
19:59that the case won't go that far.
20:01In rape cases,
20:02the conviction rate is only 27%.
20:04That means 73% of the cases
20:06have no convicts.
20:08So instead of increasing the punishment,
20:10we should invest in better policing
20:12and faster courts.
20:13In 2019,
20:14there was a famous Hyderabad rape and murder case
20:17where the police encountered the suspects.
20:20In just half an hour,
20:21the police encountered 4 culprits.
20:24The entire country was celebrating
20:26what was happening to the rapists.
20:28Will rapes stop after this encounter?
20:31No.
20:32Because neither did the policing change
20:33nor did the courts.
20:34Mamata Banerjee is fooling you
20:36by saying we should demand a death penalty.
20:38While she should spend her time
20:40improving the police in Kolkata.
20:43And she should spend her time
20:45promoting gender equality.
20:47Remember,
20:48rape is just one way
20:49of sexual exploitation.
20:51Every day,
20:52the girls we stare at
20:53and taunt them
20:55is yet another way
20:56of sexual exploitation.
20:57And this will only be solved
20:59when we teach our children
21:00the right way.
21:01Taro Ki Toli is an NGO
21:03that is trying to solve
21:04the root cause of this problem.
21:06How?
21:07By teaching children
21:08about gender equality.
21:09My elder sister got married.
21:11And she still wants to study.
21:13Her husband is against it.
21:16If I had joined Taro Ki Toli
21:18a few days earlier,
21:20she would be studying now.
21:23If we want to solve
21:24the root cause of this problem,
21:25we need to support such NGOs.
21:28Because the problem will be solved
21:29when the society changes its mind.
