00:04APPLAUSE
00:31Hello, everybody. We have that Friday feeling again.
00:34We're buzzing for the last Countdown of the week.
00:36Hi, Rach. Hello, Colin.
00:38Still waiting on that invite round to your Saturday barbecue.
00:41All right, all with vegan burgers all the way.
00:44I'm busy, actually, tomorrow.
00:46Happy birthday to Jane Torvald. She's 65 today.
00:49She's one of my all-time Olympic heroes,
00:51because, of course, 84, Sarajevo,
00:53she ice danced away to Olympic glory with Christopher Dean.
00:57I've got this little quiz. You know I love a quiz.
00:59Love a quiz.
01:01If I said to you, Torvald and Dean, what song comes to your head?
01:05Do-do-do-do. Bolero.
01:07That's the only song the whole country knows.
01:09Right. And there are great sporting moments
01:12that are synonymous with songs, right?
01:14So I'm going to test you. Easy one to start.
01:17Abide With Me.
01:19Sing it.
01:21HE SINGS
01:23That wasn't bad. I quit while I was ahead.
01:25No, I don't know.
01:26FA Cup final. Before every FA Cup final.
01:29So they sing Abide With Me. There you go.
01:31What about Pavarotti Nessun Dorma?
01:35I would definitely guess Italia 1990.
01:39Yes, absolutely. That was the theme tune for it.
01:43This is one you'll think you know.
01:46OK. Sweet Caroline, Neil Diamond.
01:49Well, I know... Well, you say, I think I know.
01:52They kind of took off during the Euros, didn't they?
01:54People just started singing it,
01:55and then when the Lionesses won, we sung it again.
01:59But I guess it's stolen from somewhere.
02:02Yeah, I mean, that was so far down the line,
02:04because, like, England fans had already stolen it
02:06from Northern Ireland fans.
02:08But it goes way back to Fenway Park
02:10and the Boston Red Sox, who...
02:12It was played just randomly,
02:14because the person in charge of the ballpark music,
02:18a woman called Amy Toley,
02:20her friend had just had a baby girl called Caroline.
02:22She played it as a treat.
02:23Everybody sang it, and then it became tradition after that.
02:26Oh, that's the key.
02:27So they play every single game at Fenway Park.
02:29From there, it's been the overplayed anthem that it is.
02:32But it belongs to the Red Sox.
02:34Fair enough. Trust you to know that.
02:36Well, listen, music to our ears, as always.
02:38Susie Dent or Jay The D, ready to go again.
02:41And a man who loves his music so much,
02:43an ex-footballer who would rather have diamond dogs
02:46than Neil Diamond, it's Pat Nevin.
02:48APPLAUSE
02:52And a musical theme is worthy of our new champion, Bill Franklin.
02:56He used to deal records for a living.
02:58What about your greatest gig ever?
03:00Bob Marley at Crystal Palace.
03:03Tell me about that.
03:051980s, last gig in London.
03:08And, yeah, it's phenomenal, really.
03:10Phenomenal, there you go.
03:11What was your favourite song in the whole set?
03:13He did Redemption Song at the end, and that was premiered then.
03:17Wow. Wow.
03:19You knew it was a classic straightaway?
03:21Yeah.
03:22OK, well, listen, good luck to you today.
03:24Hopefully you'll become a legend on Countdown
03:26as we introduce our challenger.
03:28Looking to stop you, James Bradley,
03:30originally from Dudley in the West Midlands.
03:32Hiya, mate. Hiya.
03:33And that's why you're a Villa fan, big Villa fan?
03:35Oh, I am, yeah. Good.
03:36I know you go a lot, but on one occasion,
03:38you got to do a thing I've never got to do.
03:40Mascot, tell me.
03:41Yeah, so, about 15 years ago,
03:43I was the mascot when Aston Villa played West Ham.
03:46I walked out with the captain that day, who was Arlof Malberg.
03:49But, unfortunately, they lost the game, which was the downside.
03:52What was the score? 2-1.
03:54Did you cry?
03:55I didn't cry, no.
03:56I would have if it was the mascot standard.
03:58Did you get to keep the kit?
03:59Yeah, we got to keep the kit.
04:01Did you meet the team?
04:02Yeah, it was just a brilliant experience.
04:04Afterwards, as well, I got to meet Patrick Berger
04:06and a couple of other players came in after the match.
04:08It was to meet all the mascots, and that was brilliant.
04:11Wonderful.
04:12Great experience all round.
04:13Love it. OK, well, listen, good luck today.
04:15We're very happy to have you here.
04:16It's James going against Bill.
04:18Good luck to both of you.
04:22Bill, my friend, is champion.

05:38Neither.
05:39Neither.
05:40Neither, neither, is the correct pronunciation, Suze?
05:43No, both are given in the dictionary.
05:45Neither and neither. Pat, anything else?
05:48Well, when you play football and you turn 30,
05:52just that day, you become a veteran.
05:55Just that one day makes you a veteran.
05:57I always felt bitter about that day.
05:59So, veteran, I think I've got that.
06:01Yeah, that's really good for seven.
06:03And also herniate, to suffer from a hernia, not so good.
06:06Not so good at all, which Pat would have had
06:08had he played football until he was 40.
06:10Right, your first chance to pick the letters, James,
06:13so say hello to Rich.
06:15Good afternoon, Rachel.

07:19Six.
07:20And Bill?
07:21Six.
07:22Both sixes, Bill, what have you got?
07:24Slated.
07:25Yes, and James?
07:26Loaded.
07:27Loaded and slated.
07:29Sure shots for six.
07:31Any sevens that would have stolen the glory?
07:33First of all, Loaded.
07:34Has to be music again.
07:35That was an album that we both know very well.
07:37Primal Scream, great record.
07:39No, that couldn't be that, could you?
07:41Just by one, though.
07:42For seven, Toddles.
07:44She toddles often.
07:45Oh, yeah, Toddles is long.
07:46Lovely little innocent word, Toddles.
07:48Right, the score so far, 13-6, ten points up for grabs.
07:51First numbers, Bill.
07:53Two large and four small, please, Rachel.
07:55Thank you, Bill.
07:56Two from my top ones and four from my bottom lots.
07:59And the four little ones are nine, seven, six,
08:04three in the big ones, 25 and 50,
08:07and the target to reach...
08:10725.
08:11725, numbers up.
08:40725, James.
08:43725.
08:44And, Bill?
08:45Nothing.
08:46Nothing, no worries.
08:47Got a bit tied up with that one,
08:49so a good chance for James to get a big ten points.
08:52Off you go, sir.
08:53So, 6 plus 7 is 13.
08:55Yep.
08:5613 times 50 is 650.
08:59Yep.
09:003 times 25 is 75.
09:02And add that on.
09:04I'll do it, 725.
09:06APPLAUSE
09:09There you go.
09:10It shows how important the numbers round is.
09:12Our challenger takes a slight lead, 16-13,
09:14and here's your first Tea Time teaser.
09:16Eats lean. Eats lean.
09:18He never eats lean meat, so this helps with the fat.
09:21He never eats lean meat, so this helps with the fat.
09:32APPLAUSE
09:40Welcome back.
09:41Eats lean. He never eats lean meat,
09:43so this helps with the fat.
09:45Elastane.
09:46I think that's the thing I'm going to need soon.
09:48You know when you don't have a belt, just the elastic jeans?
09:51You don't need that.
09:52Yes, think stretchy.
09:53Used for hosiery, underwear and close-fitting clothing.
09:56Think stretchy.
09:57Now, there's a statement.
09:59James, it's time for your letters.
10:01Consonant, please.
10:02Thank you, James.

11:05Coffin?
11:06Buffin.
11:07Buffin and coffin.
11:08I personally hated those letters, Pat and Susie.
11:10What have you got over there?
11:12The exact same two as I had.
11:13Yeah, those two.
11:14And then a bit of Australian for you with FABO.
11:16That's what the mean kids used to call me when I was at school.
11:18If that was how you got bullied at school,
11:20how posh was your school?
11:24Right, let's get some more letters, Bill.
11:26It's on you, mate.
11:27Consonant, please, Rachel.

11:57MUSIC PLAYS
12:07MUSIC CONTINUES
12:27Time's up. James?
12:28Seven, not written down.
12:30That's OK, Bill?
12:31Seven.
12:32Unwritten down, yes. OK, James, what's yours?
12:34Slanted.
12:35Slanted. And Bill?
12:36Slotted.
12:37Slotted and slanted.
12:38They're matching each other round for round here at the moment.
12:41Anything better than seven?
12:42It looks like there was possibilities.
12:44Yeah, it did.
12:45But we actually stopped at seven, didn't we, Pat?
12:47We did.
12:48And it's always got to do with people around you
12:51and the talents that are on the show.
12:53To my right.
12:54Just talents.
12:55Very good.
12:56OK, three points in it, James.
12:58Your numbers.
12:59Can I get one large and five small, please?
13:01You can indeed.
13:02Thank you, James.
13:03One large, five little ones.
13:05And these small numbers are...
13:13Could be tricky.
13:14Let's see the target.
13:15659.
13:16659.
13:17Numbers up.
13:35MUSIC PLAYS
13:48659. Any luck, Bill?
13:50658, not written down.
13:51One away, James?
13:52No, nothing there.
13:53OK, one away. Let's hear it, Bill.
13:558 plus 6.
13:568 plus 6 is 14.
13:59So I've slipped up.
14:01What about the 659? Really tricky, Rich.
14:04Yeah, you have to leave it with me. Just got to one away.
14:06It's a good time, Rich, to have a mathematical poser.
14:09I'll leave you out of our final day.
14:11Friday questions to Pat Nevin, so you can work on that.
14:14But, Susie, what do you want to ask Pat
14:16after getting to know him this week?
14:18Well, it's just, I've always pondered this,
14:21cos people often say that language evolves very, very quickly,
14:24except in football,
14:25where people still use the same clichés,
14:28the same formulae, etc.
14:30And I wanted to ask if you thought that was true.
14:32No, it's not.
14:33And the reason why it's not is because they use jargon a lot more now,
14:37and there are certain jargon words
14:39that are used all the time at the moment.
14:41So you'll hear the word transition used in every single commentary.
14:45No-one used that word ever ten years ago.
14:48What it means is, and listen to this one,
14:50you lost the ball again.
14:52It's not technical, right?
14:54And there are other ones, like, they'll say,
14:56we've had a low block.
14:58That means you're defending deep.
15:00There's technical terms that creep into the game,
15:03but the most important thing to remember is, it's just jargon.
15:06It's just jargon.
15:07And can I just ask one quick follow-up?
15:09Well, you can take Rachel's question,
15:11cos she's still trying to work out 6-5-9.
15:14I remember asking this of Peter Crouch on his podcast,
15:18but if you were to use code with other players when you were playing
15:22and you wanted to, say, nutmeg somebody or whatever,
15:26would you shout Sid?
15:28Have you heard Sid?
15:30Sid, now that's a new one.
15:32Megs, yes, possibly.
15:34But not that one.
15:35I think the last thing you want to do
15:37when you're going to play a trick on someone
15:39is to alert them to the fact beforehand.
15:41It's just to help the players.
15:42So I just wondered if you had secret codes.
15:44I think there were codes and things like,
15:46if you ever see a corner kick...
15:48Now, this is a secret, right?
15:49Just don't tell anyone, right?
15:50Cos no-one's listening.
15:51OK.
15:52If you ever see a corner kick and the guy stands at the back
15:54and holds his hands up,
15:55that means he doesn't know what he's doing.
15:58I'm actually going to just ask a follow-on question to that
16:01because there's so much, like, XG these days.
16:03But we forget how many things we take for granted
16:05that actually weren't used statistically in your day.
16:09And the classic one is assists.
16:11We see it as it's there all the time.
16:13We didn't say that in the 70s and 80s.
16:15We'd say, that was a great pass,
16:16but you never really signed a player and said,
16:18well, he had 13 assists with St Meron last year.
16:22So we signed him.
16:23That would have been barmy to do that.
16:25So my question is this.
16:26Do you think, we all know you were a mercurial player,
16:29we all know you were great on the ball,
16:31do you think you would be regarded as an even better player
16:35looking back in the history?
16:36Had assists existed when you played?
16:38Because you were an assist king.
16:40That was absolutely my speciality.
16:44But you can take it round six players and dummy three more
16:48and pull three more out of the game and put it to the back post
16:51for the centre forward to tap it in and he gets the headline.
16:54That's the way it used to be.
16:55Now, not that I'm bitter.
16:56Maybe just a tiny little bit.
16:59But, yeah, assists weren't really a thing when I played.
17:02They certainly weren't counted.
17:04And I'm actually not bitter.
17:06I'm very happy now that the football connoisseurs
17:11understand the importance of the assist.
17:13Absolutely.
17:14Well, listen, I hate to say it, but you've reverted the type
17:16because for five days you've just been assisting Susie Dent.
17:19She gets all the credit, but you've done it marvellously as always.
17:23APPLAUSE
17:26And she's not allowed any assists,
17:28but she's got there on her own a solo effort, Rachel.
17:31Someone tried once and I had them taken out.
17:33If you say 8 x 8 is 64,
17:37take away 7 for 57,
17:40times that by 2 for 114,
17:43times that by 6 for 684
17:46and then take away the 25.
17:48659.
17:49APPLAUSE
17:52There you go.
17:53Champion and champion, it's your letters.
17:55Consonant, please, Rachel.
17:56Thank you, Bill. L.

18:22And the last one, C.
18:24Half a minute.
18:50That's time up, Bill.
18:57Seven.
18:58And James?
18:59Six.
19:00And the six is?
19:01Locked.
19:02OK, and the seven to retake the lead?
19:04Pickled.
19:05Pickled.
19:06Yes.
19:07There you go.
19:08Onions and all sorts, very good.
19:09Anything else over there?
19:10Nick?
19:11Prickled.
19:12Prickled.
19:13Very good clap.
19:14APPLAUSE
19:16Right, great competition today, James.
19:18It's your letters.
19:19Thank you, James.

19:49MUSIC PLAYS
20:16James, how do you go on?
20:17Seven.
20:18Very good. And Bill?
20:19Seven.
20:20OK, seven, Bill?
20:21Tossing.
20:22And James?
20:23Same word.
20:24There you go.
20:25Any better?
20:26Is mousing?
20:28Yes, a cat mouses when it chases mice.
20:31So that's very good.
20:32So is a verb.
20:33And there's a single eight that we could find.
20:35Out sings.
20:36To sing more powerfully than someone else.
20:38Beautiful.
20:39Who could deny anyone that?
20:40Out sings.
20:41Wonderful word.
20:42Seven points each in that round, though.
20:44Tossing, scoring two sevens,
20:46so still just four points in it.
20:48And, Bill, it's your numbers.
20:51Two large and four small again.
20:53Thank you, Bill.
20:54Two large, four little coming up.
20:56See what difference this one makes.
20:58These numbers are 2, 6, 1, 7, 50 and 25.
21:05And the target to reach, 905.
21:07905 numbers up.
21:09MUSIC PLAYS
21:17MUSIC CONTINUES
21:40OK, 905, Bill?
21:42907.
21:43And James?

21:45Top of your goal, sir.
21:4650 plus 25 is 75.
21:48Yep.
21:496 times 2 equals 12.
21:51It does.
21:52Times them together for 900.
21:54900.
21:55Then 7 minus 1 is 6 to add on.
21:58Yep.
21:59One away.
22:00So the 905.
22:02Slight variation on this theme.
22:04Yeah.
22:0550 plus 25 is 75.
22:08Times that by 6 for 450.
22:11Take away 1 for 449.
22:14Times it by 2 for 898 and add on the 7s.
22:18One way to get 905.
22:20Yeah.

24:24Yes, absolutely fine.
24:25Loads of sevens in there.
24:26Pat, you got another one?
24:28Gators was the one.
24:29Yeah.
24:30Very similar to what the champs had.
24:32Yeah.
24:33Anything else, Susie?
24:34No, just, as you say, lots of sevens.
24:36Triages, garrets, that kind of thing.
24:38Couldn't not find an eight.
24:39Love it. Loads of sevens in there to pick off.

25:47OK, what's your seven, Bill?
25:48Strange.
25:49And James?
25:50Exactly the same.
25:51OK, over to Dixon, right corner.
25:53How did you get on?
25:54Well, I thought you'd get the strange
25:56because Steve Strange was a musician,
25:58possibly after your favourite time.
26:00Nothing bigger than that.
26:02No.
26:03Gaunter, is there?
26:04Garnet, the jewels.
26:06Again, more sevens.
26:07And Saunter, which we seem to get.
26:09Saunter, you love.
26:10We get that a lot, though.
26:11We do.
26:12It's starting to go off and it comes too often.
26:14Well, there you go.
26:15I wonder, are we going to get our first crucial Countdown conundrum
26:18in ages on Countdown?
26:19It feels like ages.
26:20So, anyway, that's something to look forward to.
26:22Don't go anywhere.
26:23Let's get some origins of words now with Susie Dent.
26:25Yeah, well, James and Bill are going to be competing
26:28for being the top banana.
26:30I'm going to talk about some nicknames for important people.
26:34So, top banana, believe it or not,
26:37comes from the first half of the 20th century
26:40and it was the leading comedian in a burlesque show.
26:43So, apparently, it was a double-talk routine
26:47involving three comedians
26:49and the one that gets the punchline is the top banana.
26:52The foil, the stooge, for the top banana was the second banana
26:56and there was also the third banana,
26:58but neither of those split from showbiz, if you like.
27:02So, that's that.
27:03Head honcho is another one.
27:05You might guess that honcho is from Japan.
27:07It means group leader in Japanese
27:09and it was brought back by US servicemen and women
27:12who had been stationed over in Japan during the Second World War.
27:16And, finally, kahuna, the big kahuna.
27:19That's Hawaiian, where it can refer to a priest or a shaman
27:22or somebody who's really masterful at their craft,
27:25such as canoe-making.
27:26Not sure about the etymology.
27:28It might go back to a Hawaiian word meaning caretaker,
27:31but surfers famously picked that up in the 1950s
27:34for somebody who was expert at riding the surf.
27:37Yes.
27:41In our head honcho is Bill.
27:43He's our champion, one win under his belt,
27:45but he's in danger of playing second fiddle to James.
27:49A tiny three-point lead.
27:51Four rounds left and, James, you're picking the letters.
27:54Consonant, please. Thank you, James.

29:07Very good.

30:37Absolutely fine.
30:38Redo something.
30:39Yes.
30:40There's a word that surely can't be in the dictionary.
30:42It's what Tyson Fury calls everybody when he's angry.
30:45A dosser.
30:46Ah, I think dosser will be in.
30:48It is.
30:49Yes.
30:50Can you read out?
30:51Well, no.
30:52It just simply says an idle person.
30:54It says it's derogatory or a rough sleeper.
30:57Anything better?
30:58Yeah, you can take it to seven with dresser.
31:00Yes, dresser for seven.
31:02Right.
31:03Ten points in it, but remember, the conundrum is worth ten.
31:06So, two huge rounds coming up.
31:08James, you're picking the final numbers.
31:10Can I get one large and five small, please?
31:12You're playing it as safely as you possibly can.
31:15Thank you, James.
31:16One large, five little and a possible crucial conundrum coming up.
31:19Let's see.

32:38Well done, you've got there.
32:39There it is.
32:43Well-deserved win for James.
32:44Bill, we've still got that conundrum,
32:46so let's get your finger on the buzzer there.
32:48And, James, you too, who's going to go out with a bang
32:51as we reveal today's Countdown Conundrum?
32:58James?
32:59Off-handed.
33:00Off-handed.
33:01Let's have a look.
33:03Ah, brilliant.
33:08It's one of those, Bill, a bit like a football match
33:10when you look at it and you think,
33:12it was a closer contest than that, you know?
33:14That's what it looks like.
33:15It came down to that final numbers round.
33:17Should be proud of your performance, I hope.
33:19Yeah. Cheers.
