00:05APPLAUSE
00:31Hello, everybody. It's Friday afternoon,
00:33so let battle commence with the last Countdown of the week.
00:37A show that has been described as lovely stuff.
00:39Not my words, the words of Sheik and Stephens.
00:42And it's knowing me, Colin Murray, knowing you, Rachel Riley, Aha!
00:46Aha.
00:48Right, so you've guessed where I'm going with this.
00:50It wasn't the day Alan Partridge was born,
00:52but it's Steve Coogan's birthday today, so happy birthday.
00:55For me, the greatest... Sorry, Arlo Hannan.
00:58For me, the greatest comedy creation of the century,
01:02British at least.
01:04Are you on the same page?
01:06I haven't watched as much as I should have watched.
01:09We need a weekend together. I'm sticking with Father Ted.
01:12OK, I know it is true.
01:14I've been trying to keep you away from Arlo all week,
01:16cos it's a bit awkward.
01:17What happened in that scene in episode three of the first series?
01:21Right, well, listen, let's get on with today's Countdown.
01:24We'll make sure it's properly policed.
01:26It must not, I repeat, not turn into an all-night rave.
01:30It's Susie Dent and another king of sitcom, it's Arlo Hannan.
01:36Right, let's say hello to our champion, Mike Toms.
01:40Three wins under the belt, a bit shaky yesterday,
01:43but if it goes according to the sequence so far,
01:45it'll be a great show today.
01:47Yeah, I'm going to try and inverse the trend a little bit
01:49from yesterday, I think.
01:50OK, good. Let's introduce our challengers.
01:53So much we could talk to Charlotte Frears about.
01:56Charlotte, welcome to the show. Hello, Colin.
01:58I want to ask you about your tattoos,
01:59I want to ask you about your Taylor Swift obsession,
02:01but I think I'm going to concentrate on your number one passion with it,
02:04which is books. Tell me about it.
02:06It is, yeah. Well, I've got two literature degrees.
02:09But I'm also a writer.
02:11Most recently I've been writing a lot of poetry.
02:14So last year I wrote a poetry collection,
02:16which I printed and self-published,
02:18to raise money for CALM, men's mental health charity.
02:21Fantastic.
02:22It was a co-op mechanism, because I was doing
02:24a creative writing module at university during my master's.
02:28And obviously it was a difficult time for everyone,
02:30so I just started writing it, put it together,
02:34worked with an artist to design it all,
02:36and then just started selling it, really.
02:38Right, well, good luck to you today.
02:40Let's see if you can get on the right page against me.
02:46Mr Tomes, as I live and breathe, let's get nine letters.
02:50OK. Hi, Rachel. Hi, Mike. Consonant, please.
02:52Thank you. Start today with R.
02:55And another one.
02:57W. And a vowel.
03:00E. And another vowel.
03:03O. And a consonant.
03:06X. And another consonant.
03:10D. And another consonant.
03:14S. And a vowel.
03:17U.
03:20And a final consonant, please.
03:23And a final G.
03:25At home and in the studio, let's play Countdown.
03:50MUSIC PLAYS
03:58Mike? Seven.
04:00And Charlotte? Just a six.
04:02A six is...? Exodus.
04:04Yes. And Mike? Groused.
04:06Yeah, both lovely words. Groused takes it, obviously.
04:09Yeah. What have you got over there, Arnold?
04:11Roused. I didn't bother with the G.
04:14But I do think Exodus deserves more points for having an X.
04:18Do you know, you keep saying that about Zs...
04:20You've got to change the rules of this game.
04:22You keep saying that about Zs and Xs, and that means
04:24then you must be a Scrabble player if you're thinking that way.
04:27Yeah. I do like Scrabble, yeah. Right.
04:297-0 to Mike, but, Charlotte, you're in control of the letters.
04:32Say hello to Rachel. Hiya, Rachel. Hi, Charlotte.
04:34Consonant, please. Thank you. Start with N.
04:37And another one.
04:39S. And a vowel, please.
04:42A. Another.
04:45I. And another.
04:48E. Consonant.

05:18MUSIC PLAYS
05:34How do you get on, Charlotte? A seven.
05:36Yes. And Mike? Seven.
05:38Let's have the seven, Mike. Searing.
05:40Searing. And Charlotte? Singers.
05:43Singers. Yep. Both excellent.
05:45And searing. There you go. A searing voice.
05:47What have we got over there, Ardal?
05:49Well, I mean, I would like to ask Susie a favour.
05:53I'd like to have searings.
05:55I don't think it's a noun.
05:58It's just there as an adjective, I think.
06:01Yes, it is. Sorry, Ardal.
06:03So I've just got gainers. Yes.
06:05Good for a seven.
06:07And a couple of votes for you.
06:09An assigner. Somebody who assigns legal responsibilities.
06:12Assigner. OK, got you. And reassign.
06:15Reassign. There you go. Different level there.
06:18But Charlotte's on the board. 14-7, it is.
06:21And, Mike, you'll be doing the honours
06:23with the first numbers of this show.
06:25OK, you can have two from the top.
06:27I knew what you were going to say. Too large.
06:29Four little... Thank you, Mike.
06:31First numbers of the day are...
06:34..two, eight, one, 50 and 75.
06:40And the target to reach, 389.
06:43389 numbers up.
07:03DRAMATIC MUSIC
07:14Pens down. Mike? 389.
07:17And Charlotte? 389.
07:19Go ahead, Mike. 50 minus one.
07:2149. Times eight.
07:23Is 392. Minus two, minus one.
07:26Perfect. Charlotte, go ahead.
07:28I did... No, I didn't. I've used the eight twice.
07:31OK, so Mike's got the ten points.
07:34APPLAUSE
07:36First two-time teaser this Friday afternoon,
07:38Ted's Free. Ted's Free.
07:40Uncle deteriorated quite badly.
07:43Uncle deteriorated quite badly.
07:46DRAMATIC MUSIC
07:53APPLAUSE
07:57Welcome back to Ted's Free.
07:59Uncle deteriorated quite badly.
08:01It's festered, of course.
08:03It's festered. 24 plays seven.
08:06And, Charlotte, we're going to get some letters from you.
08:08Consonant, please, Rachel. Thank you, Charlotte.
08:10F. And another?
08:13S. And a vowel?
08:16I. And a consonant?
08:20D. And a consonant?
08:23D. And a consonant?
08:28N. And a vowel?
08:32E. A vowel?
08:35U. A consonant?
08:40T. And a vowel, please?
08:44Lastly, I. Thanks, Rach.

08:53WHISTLE BLOWS
09:17That's her time for this round, Charlotte.
09:19Er, just five. That's OK. Mike?
09:22Er, seven not written down. And Charlotte?
09:24Inset. And what's the seven?
09:26Unified. Over the dictionary corner.
09:28And Arlo Hanlon?
09:30I had unified, but naturally I prefer undies.
09:33Yeah.
09:35Susie, can you why us with anything better than a seven?
09:38Er, there is an eight there with disunite.
09:42And to disunite a group is to cause it to separate or break up.
09:46Brilliant. Let's get some more letters. It's from Mike.
09:49Er, consonant, please? Thank you, Mike.
09:51R. And another one?
09:54S. And a vowel?
09:57E. And a second vowel?
10:00I. And a consonant?
10:03Z. And a consonant?
10:07H. And another consonant?
10:11G. And a vowel?
10:15A.
10:18And a final vowel, please?
10:21And a final U. Good luck.
10:44MUSIC
10:55Mike?
10:56Dodgy seven. And Charlotte?
10:59I'll try six. What's the six, Charlotte?
11:01Augers. Well, it might count, because Mike says his is dodgy.
11:05Gauzier.
11:07OK, so auger is not the spelling in that auger's well, that's to use,
11:11but auger is in the dictionary as a tool resembling a large corkscrew.
11:15Mm-hm. So that's absolutely fine.
11:17And gauzy is in the dictionary, thin and translucent,
11:20and gauzier is also in, so well done.
11:22Very good. Two great words.
11:25Anything better there, Gordon?
11:27I don't know. I have a definite six, anyway.
11:30Hazers and gauzes. Mm-hm.
11:33Yeah. But I have a possible eight.
11:35Here we go. OK.
11:36Possible's a key word with O'Hanlon, if you've been watching this week.
11:39Well, it should be, it should be in the dictionary, obviously.
11:42It's a hug-sizer, so someone who measures the size of a hug.
11:45Right, so they come in with a measuring tape? Exactly.
11:48Do that, oh, well, that's a great hug. Yeah.
11:50All right, so, like, hug-sizer, get it sorted.
11:52OK. Could be hyphenated.
11:54You're not even checking, I don't believe this. No, I did check.
11:57You're undermining me.
11:59You're going to have a list this long,
12:01the Oxford English Dictionary, after today.
12:04OK, first time for Charlotte to pick some numbers,
12:08so it's all yours.
12:09Two large and four small, please.
12:11Thank you, Charlotte. Another two large, four little combo.
12:15And for the second time today,
12:17it is one, eight, seven, five,
12:22and the big one, 75 and 25,
12:25and the target, 597.
12:28597, numbers up.
12:39BUZZER
13:00597, the target. Charlotte?
13:03597. And Mike?
13:05597. Brilliant. Charlotte, off you go.
13:07So, I did 8 take 5 to get 3.
13:108 minus 5, 3.
13:127 take 1 to get the 6.
13:147 take 1, 6, yeah.
13:1625, add 75 for 100,
13:18times the 6 and the 100 and take the 3.
13:21Perfect. Well done.
13:23That's a way to go for that ten points. Great.
13:26And Mike?
13:28Yeah, I did 75 times 8.
13:29600.
13:317 minus 5 is 2.
13:33It is.
13:34Add the 2 to the 1.
13:363 and take it away.
13:38Brilliant.
13:42I love that. Two very different ways.
13:44Ten points each. 48 plus 17
13:46as we head over to Dictionary Corner
13:48and Arlo Hanlon.
13:49And you can relax, we get to ask you a question each.
13:52I think the stalker there should go first.
13:54So, Rachel, what's yours?
13:56I'm not sure if I like this new nickname.
13:58I was going to say, when I'm out and about,
14:00quite often people will just shout random sums at me.
14:03What are the things that people ask you to do
14:05and how annoying is it?
14:06There was a couple of signs used in Father Ted.
14:09So, during an episode where the priests
14:12were protesting at a rude film.
14:14That's still one.
14:15The Passion of St Tibulus was the name of the film
14:18and Father Ted and myself, Father Dougal,
14:20were standing outside with these placards
14:22and one of them was, careful now,
14:24and one of them was, down with this sort of thing.
14:26So that gets shouted at me quite a lot.
14:29I'd be lying if I didn't say that, like,
14:32so many people say, Cup of Tea, Father, to me,
14:36all the time that happens.
14:38But, yeah, that's kind of it, like, yeah.
14:41Tolerable.
14:42It's always tolerable.
14:43Most people are very friendly about it
14:45and luckily it was sort of a well-liked show.
14:48Yep.
14:49Susie?
14:50I just wanted to ask you, did you base your characters
14:52on any people that you know?
14:54Ooh!
14:55And if so, are you able to say?
14:57Well, that character, Father Dougal,
14:59was probably based on a dog that I had.
15:02LAUGHTER
15:05Great.
15:06It was very important to me not to play it as stupid,
15:09you know, and not to kind of play that stereotype.
15:13So I was kind of going for innocence
15:16more than stupidity, if you like.
15:18Yes.
15:19So, you know, I liked the fact that he had
15:21sort of an otherworldly quality.
15:23So, yeah, so I think it was kind of based
15:26a little bit on my little sister,
15:28who was about ten years younger than me,
15:30because she just had this lovely innocent aura about her
15:32and she was just, you know, so affectionate and everything.
15:35And then dogs generally, because dogs are obliging,
15:38they're always full of beans,
15:40they're always, you know, ready to greet the new day
15:42no matter what's going on in their lives.
15:45So I just always kind of channelled puppies.
15:49I love that.
15:51That's fantastic.
15:52Not for all my characters.
15:54LAUGHTER
15:56I want to ask you about...
15:57Now, it's a strange thing, you played many comedy roles.
16:01But I suppose when the name's above the door,
16:04Father Ted, then you're Father Dougal,
16:06you could say that's the second role in that.
16:08Although it was very much a doubleheader.
16:10I'd love to know, because I don't think there's such a thing
16:13as a great comedy that doesn't have that strong second role in it.
16:17Who do you think's played the greatest second role in a sitcom?
16:20Oh, God, that's a really good question.
16:22I mean, I suppose other touchstones for me,
16:24like particularly when I did that first big role that I did,
16:27Father Dougal, would have been Baldrick in Blackadder.
16:32Manuel, obviously, in Fawlty Towers would have sprang to mind.
16:35You know, when you're doing it,
16:36you don't think too deeply about it at the time,
16:38but you realise, you know, while you're doing it,
16:41like, oh, yes, I see where that's coming from.
16:43You know, you've picked up a lot of stuff during your life,
16:47during your viewing career.
16:50But I think if I was going to name one,
16:52it might be Hank in The Larry Sanders Show.
16:55Fantastic.
16:56He was the classic sidekick.
16:58He got great storylines himself,
17:00but he was just a great foil to the Larry Sanders character.
17:03Yeah.
17:04Three fantastic answers.
17:06I love doing that on a Friday.
17:08Arlo Hanlon, everyone.
17:09APPLAUSE
17:11Back to the game. A whole lot of miles left on this.
17:14We've no idea who's second fiddle today, believe me.
17:16Let's get some more letters, and it's Mike.
17:19Constant, please, Rachel.
17:21Thank you, Mike.
17:22L.
17:23And a second.
17:25S.
17:26And a vowel.
17:28O.
17:29And another vowel.
17:31I.
17:33And a consonant.
17:35R.
17:36And another consonant, please.
17:38M.
17:39A vowel.
17:41A.
17:44Another vowel.
17:46I.
17:48And a final consonant, please.
17:50A final T.
17:52Half a minute.
18:21MUSIC STOPS
18:23Mike?
18:24Six.
18:25And Charlotte?
18:26Six.
18:27What's the six, Charlotte?
18:28Trails.
18:29And Mike?
18:30Ratios.
18:31Ratios and trails, no worries there whatsoever.
18:33I think there have been a few people at home with a six
18:36and then struggling, so we're floundering.
18:38Let's have it.
18:39Yeah.
18:40Oh, oh, oh, sorry.
18:41No, no, no.
18:42THEY LAUGH
18:43Have an eight. Sorry, go on.
18:45There is...similar, with seven.
18:48And a couple of eights.
18:50One from my learned friend to the right.
18:52First of all, mistrial and moralist.
18:54Moralist.
18:55She's got moralist.
18:56Moralist.
18:57That's why we have a clock, Arnold.
18:5930 seconds.
19:00That's your lot.
19:01Right, six points each.
19:02Who's next?
19:03It's you, Charlotte.

19:05A consonant, please.
19:06Thank you, Charlotte.

19:08And another.

20:31What a way to go out, eh?
20:33Yeah.
20:34Periodics.
20:35Oh!
20:36Periodic is brilliant for eight.
20:38I did check to see whether periodic tables,
20:40you know, whether it had become a noun on its own,
20:42and it hasn't, but the eight is fantastic.
20:45So close.
20:46Yeah.
20:47So close.
20:48Well done if you got periodic at home.
20:49That's top drawer.
20:50Mike, let's get some numbers.
20:51I think we'll stick with two for the top and four little ones.
20:54Take my own cue.
20:55The usual.
20:56Thank you, Mike.
20:57Two big, four little coming up.

24:03Detain.
24:04I wonder how many people at home just had dance and detain
24:07written down for those letters, right?
24:09Anything else, Susie?
24:11Yes.
24:12And eight was hidden there with indicate.
24:14I don't know how you found that.
24:16Fantastic.
24:17Indicate for eight with a Q.
24:19That's the very best you can do in the Oxford English Dictionary.
24:23OK.
24:24Good points for Charlotte.
24:25But, Mike, you're picking the letters.

25:39And Charlotte.
25:40Bemoan.
25:41Let's have a little look over to Susie and Ardal.
25:44Bayonet is there for a seven.
25:46Bayonet.
25:47Fantastic.
25:48Bayonet, right.
25:49And we'll stay with you, Susie,
25:51because it's time for our origins of words.
25:53Where are we going today?
25:54Oh, well, I'm going to stay with animals.
25:56When I was talking yesterday,
25:58I was staying close to the farmyard, really, wasn't I?
26:01I'm going to kick off with talking the hind leg off a donkey,
26:05which is just a really strange one.
26:07And it's somebody who just talks with unflagging,
26:11really wearying persistence
26:14and doesn't quite realise that they are boring everyone else.
26:18But you might wonder what a donkey has to do with it.
26:20In the beginning, nothing,
26:22because it was originally to talk a dog's hind leg off.
26:25It seems like a really curious metaphor,
26:27so in the 19th century, middle of the 19th century,
26:30but it really is just all about, you know,
26:33boring someone so much that their limbs start to drop off
26:36and you've been there for so long.
26:37That's as simple as it gets.
26:39Look, a gift horse in the mouth is considered to be very rude.
26:43Don't refuse something that is offered to you
26:46and that is actually a very nice gift by questioning it.
26:49And this goes back to examining a horse's teeth to gauge its age,
26:53which, of course, would be an incredibly rude thing to do,
26:55but that is how a horse's age is gauged,
26:57by looking at their teeth.
26:59Still don't get the gift part of it.
27:01Well, if you were given a horse as a gift,
27:03don't be so rude as to look it in the mouth
27:05and think, hmm, I wonder how old it is.
27:07And if it's old, you might consider it to be a bit of a worthless present,
27:10a bit of a white elephant.
27:12And I'll finish with that.
27:14I've talked about this before, but no apologies, really,
27:17because it's such a lovely etymology.
27:19A white elephant was, if you go back to Siam, now Thailand,
27:23the king would often give a courtier that he didn't like
27:27a white elephant as a gift,
27:29although it was a pretty horrible gift
27:31because they were considered sacred, so they could never be put to work,
27:34but it was just a fortune to keep.
27:36So if you gave someone a white elephant,
27:38you were giving them something that is essentially
27:40a bit of a millstone around their neck.
27:42Right, brilliant.
27:43APPLAUSE
27:45Four rounds to go.
27:4777 plays 45, so it's tightening a little bit.
