00:00Former national footballer Thomas Samuel has blamed the sorry state of sports in Malaysia
00:08on the government's failure to support grassroots initiatives.
00:12He said the youth and sports and education ministries have failed to implement an effective
00:17system to support the many sports clubs that unearthed and groomed Malaysian sporting legends.
00:24He said many sports clubs have disappeared due to a lack of government funding.
00:30He also highlighted the issue of limited access to sports facilities,
00:35which are often commercialised or poorly maintained.
00:39Former national swimmer Cindy Ong agreed,
00:42noting that privatisation has made access to swimming pools difficult.
00:47Ong also criticised the culture of mediocrity in Malaysian sports,
00:52saying that everybody is being rewarded for simply completing a race.
00:57She also said there was no more element of competition in sports,
01:01adding that youth participating in competitive sport
01:04and those overseeing their performance were content with average results.
