Unseasonally warm winter weather across much of Australia
Heat for central and northern Australia, and rain for southern Australia as August 2024 ends.

00:00Hello from the Bureau with your weekend weather update, and our main weather story is heading
00:04into this weekend first, that unseasonal heat continuing for much of central and northern
00:08Australia, with the potential for new records to be set.
00:11Otherwise, it's a different story across the far south of the country, with rain, wind
00:16and storms heading into your weekend.
00:18Let's first start off with what we were expecting heading into Friday evening, and
00:22we do see a trough approaching the southeast of the country.
00:24That's bringing showers to parts of South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania, as well
00:29as very strong winds, and they'll really ramp up into Friday night, and so we do have
00:34a Severe Weather Warning current that covers elevated parts of southern Victoria, eastern
00:38Victoria and the snowy mountains of New South Wales, so if you are in these areas, be sure
00:42to check for the latest warnings heading into Friday night and Saturday morning.
00:47Otherwise, it is also wet and windy across far southwest WA, including Perth, with a
00:51trough moving through, and that's also bringing very welcome rainfall to agricultural areas
00:56of the southwest land division.
00:57But as you can see behind it, another very strong cold front approaching from the west,
01:02and this will bring severe weather over the weekend, and so we will be releasing a dedicated
01:06severe weather video for southern parts of WA, and that will be available to watch on
01:11our social media channels later on Friday.
01:14Otherwise, the rest of the country is remaining very clear and dry, and that's allowing a
01:19lot of this heat to really build up, and we are seeing maximum temperatures very much
01:24above the August average, all the way from northern New South Wales into Queensland and
01:28the rest of the north of the country, so this heat will persist through the weekend and
01:33into much of next week.
01:35On Saturday, we do see showers gradually clearing off in Victoria as well as some of that wind,
01:40but showers continuing for parts of Tasmania, and there's that strong cold front approaching
01:44southwest WA.
01:45That will bring a band of heavy showers and storms, as well as some very strong winds
01:49extending towards the east and Esperance through the day on Saturday.
01:54Otherwise, we do see just a few patchy showers across parts of NSW through the day, otherwise
01:59clear skies returning to Victoria.
02:02Into Sunday, across the north of the country, and we have seen some very heavy tropical
02:06showers about the Cassowary Coast and Cairns through this week.
02:09They'll gradually ease off, so on a drying trend through there, but that cold front will
02:12start to approach the southeast of the country.
02:15It will weaken back into a trough, but we are still expecting very windy conditions,
02:19especially across coastal parts of South Australia, and also southwest Victoria, especially from
02:24Sunday morning.
02:26Sunday afternoon, rain builds across Victoria, with the potential for severe thunderstorms
02:30for northern Victoria and the NSW Riverina, otherwise into Sunday night we do see a few
02:35showers pushing onto the NSW coast, but as you can see, clear and dry for the rest of
02:40the country.
02:41So let's next look at those temperatures.
02:43Starting off with Saturday, you can see maximum temperatures into the low to mid 30s right
02:48across central and northern Australia, and this is 10-15 degrees above the August average.
02:54The real hotspot will be Unadatta, just north of Coober Pedy, currently expecting a forecast
02:58maximum of 38-39 degrees.
03:01Otherwise quite a bit cooler across far southwest WA, but remaining mild across the eastern
03:06seaboard.
03:07A warm 25 for Sydney and 26 for Brisbane, but it will get even warmer as heat pushes
03:12towards the east coast on Sunday, warming up to 29 degrees in Brisbane, 26 in Sydney
03:17and remaining quite mild across the southeast, and then quite cool across the WA in the wake
03:22of that cold front.
03:23But maximum temperatures very much above average, even nudging up to 40 degrees for parts of
03:28the northern Kimberley.
