From late Thursday, June 6, 2024 through to the weekend, rainfall is expected to hit across NSW and the southern regions of Western Australia
Transcript
00:00Hello it is Wednesday the 5th of June and significant weather will be impacting the
00:04far west and far east of the country through the second half of this week,
00:07so let's dive into the detail. Immediately we can see lots of clear skies across Australia,
00:13fine through the northern half of the country and the centre here with the action on our maps
00:17in terms of rainfall happening across New South Wales as well as across far southwestern WA.
00:23The wet weather will kick off in both of those regions late on Thursday and then it is expected
00:28to be quite wet on both edges of the country through Friday. Initially we will see the wet
00:33weather start in central and southern New South Wales, it will also affect parts of eastern
00:37Victoria so we'll zoom in and have a little bit of a closer look here. Now through Thursday a
00:41low pressure area will develop off of the east coast which will really drive that rain onto the
00:47country. The central and southern coastlines of New South Wales and the far east of Victoria
00:52are lining up to see some very wet conditions from tonight, Wednesday night, right through much
00:56of the day on Thursday and even into Friday. And over the course of that three day span,
01:01we do expect some places to see triple figures, that's right 100mm of rain if not more around the
01:07Illawarra and south coast forecast districts and because of that heavy incoming rainfall we have
01:12issued a severe weather warning for heavy rain. 100-150mm is expected in this yellow area over
01:1924 hours from Thursday morning to Friday morning, could see upwards of 200mm in one or two locations
01:25as well. Just a refresher on the districts, this is the Illawarra district here, this is the south
01:29coast forecast district, so just the far north there, and then the central and southern tablelands,
01:34also picking up some of that heavier rain. It will be wet in Sydney but note at the moment the
01:39heaviest falls are expected to be south of the city. Let's pop across the country to the far
01:44side because there will be a significant cold front approaching Perth on Thursday as well,
01:48reaching land during the morning, reaching the city during the evening, then on Friday continuing
01:53to move north and eastwards and spread a weakening band of rain across the southwest of
01:58the state. That's not the last of the wet weather though, you will see another cold front waiting
02:02in the wings, ready to arrive this weekend. In terms of rainfall, between Wednesday and Friday
02:08we could see 20-40mm in many areas but if thunderstorms do kick off, and there's certainly
02:13a chance that they will, we will see isolated spots getting more than 40mm across the southwestern
02:19coastline of Western Australia. Elsewhere across the country, a fine second half to the week with
02:24clear and settled weather but we are going to see chillier temperatures continue to spread
02:28across much of Australia and while it has been cold down here in recent days, we're also going
02:33to see some slightly cooler conditions eventually reach the far north of the country. So most of the
02:39autumn so far and into winter we've continued to see those 30 degree temperatures up north
02:44with 20 degree overnight minimums but coming this weekend the minimums are going to start to drop
02:48Darwin down to 17. I know for a lot of us that doesn't sound cold but that's a real knock down
02:53in terms of those temperatures there, as cool as 3 degrees around the centre of the country
02:57and most of the southern half in single digits as well and we'll also see the top temperatures
03:02knocked down a few degrees across northern Australia and most of the rest of the country
03:06stuck in the teens. So there is plenty happening depending on where you are in the country so do
03:11check out your local forecast at the Bureau website app and we'll keep the updates rolling
03:15on social media too.
