00:00Should Taiwan make it easier for foreigners to gain citizenship?
00:05Campaigners here in Taipei say yes,
00:08arguing that it will help Taiwan deal with an aging society,
00:12as well as talent shortages.
00:14To become Taiwanese, most foreigners have to give up their nationality.
00:19Many foreign residents have long said this is unfair,
00:22because Taiwanese are allowed to hold dual nationality.
00:26What we are doing for our dual nationality Taiwan campaign
00:29is ultimately a call for legislative reform.
00:33This event has been organized by Crossroads,
00:36a non-profit pushing Taiwan to become more international.
00:40Speakers include legislators from Taiwan's two main parties,
00:44and long-term foreigners sharing their own fights for citizenship.
00:49Letting go of one identity to fully embrace another
00:52is a choice that no one should have to make,
00:55because it's a choice that divides rather than unites.
00:59Campaigners here, along with the Canadian, Australian, New Zealand
01:03and French Chambers of Commerce and others,
01:06are urging people to sign a petition,
01:09calling on the government to overturn the rule
01:12that permanent residents must renounce their original citizenship.
01:16They say for the good of Taiwan's development and security,
01:20this change is needed.
