00:00Hi, I'm health reporter Sarah McCann and today we are going to be talking about the new viral
00:05social media trend called sunburning. Experts have been warning against videos that have
00:10been popping up on social media platforms such as TikTok that have been suggesting
00:14that going out in the sun without using sun cream can boost skin and even burn off acne.
00:20Cancer charity Teenage Cancer Trust have been warning against the new trend which may possibly
00:24cause people to increase their risk of developing skin cancer. A survey conducted by the charity
00:29revealed that 73% of 18-24 year olds admitted getting sunburned at least once every year.
00:36Whilst it also found that 30% incorrectly believed that the sun's harmful UV rays are
00:41only out when it's summer and sunny, whilst another third believed that getting a base
00:46tan could prevent you from burning. Getting sunburned just once every two years can triple
00:51your risk of developing skin cancer compared to someone who's never been burnt, with
00:56melanoma being the most common diagnosed skin cancer in young people. Every day two
01:02people are diagnosed with the condition. Rosie Bear, health information manager at Teenage
01:07Cancer Trust said, we really advise against young people actively going in the sun to
01:12get sunburned. Not many people realise that getting sunburned just once every two years
01:18can triple your risk of skin cancer compared to if you've never been burnt.
