00:00British TV watchers are being warned that the licence fee is set to go up again in just a few months' time.
00:08I'm tech and TV writer Matt Mohan-Hickson and this is all you need to know about the BBC licence fee in 2025.
00:15It was announced in November last year, 2024, that the BBC licence fee would be going up by £5.
00:22From the 1st of April 2025, the TV licence for a colour TV will now cost you £174.50 a year, which is up £5 from £169.50 in April 2024 to March 2025.
00:40From the 1st of April 2025, it will cost you £5 more. That's a rise in line with inflation.
00:47You need a licence fee to watch live TV of any kind, so if you watch sports like on now TV, you still need a licence fee for that, even if you're not using like a Skybox or anything.
00:58If you're streaming Premier League football when it was on Amazon Sports, Amazon Prime even, sorry, Amazon Prime Live Sports, you need a TV licence for that.
01:10Same for Netflix, now they've got live sports, they had the boxing with one of the Paul brothers at the end of last year.
01:17They've got the wrestling as a weekly live event on Netflix at the moment, so if you want to watch that live, if you're a night owl, you do need a licence fee for that.
01:26But you don't need a licence fee to watch Netflix normally or any other streaming services aside from BBC iPlayer.
01:33And if you watch live on ITVX or Channel 4 or one of those, you do need a TV licence fee.
01:40But if you're just watching things on demand, you don't need a TV licence fee except BBC iPlayer. BBC iPlayer needs a TV licence fee no matter what.
01:49So from the 1st of April, the BBC TV licence fee is going up by £5 to £174.50 for 2025.
