00:00Is Islam a Religious Issue?
00:05I think that the one who is studying Islam
00:09will automatically himself come to a time
00:11where this issue is one that will basically
00:14become one that they're thinking about all the time.
00:16I think that a person who begins his religiosity
00:20will not and should not be approached with this one issue.
00:23Rather they should be approached with basic knowledge
00:25with what is Islam, what is Iman,
00:27what is Tawheed, how do we worship Allah,
00:29why do we worship Allah, emphasize the prayers,
00:32emphasize the Qur'an, emphasize spirituality,
00:34emphasize the world vision of Islam.
00:36These are far more important questions.
00:38And I personally in my own interactions
00:42when I'm meeting with Muslims over and over again,
00:45I never go out of my way to emphasize the issue of the beard.
00:49Once I get to know somebody whom I've known for a while
00:51and he doesn't have a beard,
00:53I might jokingly remark something about,
00:56Oh Inshallah, next time I see you,
00:58you'll have some beard or something like that.
00:59Just a joking remark in passing that will make him think.
01:02I don't sit him down and give him a huge lecture.
01:05I just don't think that's appropriate
01:06and I think it turns many people off
01:08who have been raised in the Western environment.
01:10I think it turns people off to be so blunt
01:13about an issue that they believe to be trivial.
01:15And I think that to introduce it in that manner,
01:18in a blunt manner is not wise.
01:20Rather it should be done in a indirect manner.
01:22And Inshallah, slowly but surely,
01:24I mean I've never really had any problems.
01:26Once a person reaches a level of Iman and religiosity
01:30where they want to follow the sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ,
01:32one of the most obvious manifestations of that is the beard.
01:36And so I've never really had any problem.
01:38Build the spirituality and the beard will come automatically.
01:41Is it appropriate to equate the hijab with the beard in this respect?
01:45Not at all.
01:47This is definitely not correct
01:49because the evidences for the hijab are Qur'anic
01:53and there is no explicit Qur'anic evidence for the beard.
01:56The hijab has been the symbol of Islam for women centuries over
02:01and there is no serious controversy about the hijab.
02:04Believe it or not there are some ulama
02:06who say that the beard is, as we all know, not farḍ.
02:09And this is something that you find.
02:11So the controversy over the beard
02:13has been around much longer than that of the hijab.
02:15There is really no controversy over the hijab.
02:17So to equate the beard and the hijab
02:19and to say they're at the same level
02:20is definitely not correct.
02:22Not every wajib is at the same level
02:24and the evidences differ from issue to issue.
02:26So the evidences for the hijab are far more explicit,
02:29far more Qur'anic, far more overpowering
02:32than the evidences for the beard
02:34even though I think both of them are farḍ.
