00:02:17Hear ye, men and women of Jerusalem!
00:02:21Hear the sentence of the Grand Sanhedrin,
00:02:24which has adjudged guilty of blasphemy and rebellion.
00:02:28Ahmer, son of Zachary, and Socar, son of Yezi.
00:02:33Herod, our great sovereign by the will of God,
00:02:38as just and deserved punishment for their crimes.
00:02:42Orders that they shall be hanged upon stakes
00:02:46until they shall both be dead.
00:02:49Orders that they shall be exposed for two days
00:02:53for the edification of and the warning to the people of Israel.
00:02:59That the body shall be thrown to the door as carrion
00:03:05and that the curses of just men shall follow them into eternity.
00:03:10Mother.
00:03:17My son, my son.
00:03:21Move on.
00:03:24My son is not guilty.
00:03:26You must believe me.
00:03:28My son is not guilty.
00:03:31Please, please, please.
00:03:36Mother.
00:03:38I'll get you some, my son. I'm going now.
00:03:44Will you let me take this, please?
00:03:47Yes.
00:03:48Thank you.
00:03:53Give him this water, for pity's sake.
00:03:55There's no pity for those who have offended our king.
00:03:58Herod has murdered that man, because he called Herod a murderer.
00:04:06Return to your work now.
00:04:08Go back to your training.
00:04:23...
00:04:48Where are the others?
00:04:49Who won the battle?
00:04:51Where are our sons? Tell us!
00:04:54Prisoners. Dead. In flight.
00:04:58Aaron, what news?
00:05:00Not now.
00:05:01I am the commander of the stronghold. I demand an answer.
00:05:04And I am the commander of the king's royal guards. I answer only to the king.
00:05:11Defeat or victory?
00:05:12Aaron's face does not speak of victory.
00:05:16Well then, is it the end of Herod?
00:05:18Silence. We must be ready for anything.
00:05:34My king.
00:05:41I understand, Aaron.
00:05:44Defeat.
00:05:46With how many men have you returned?
00:05:48A mere handful of your royal guards.
00:05:53And my Edomian cavalry?
00:05:57My yellow mercenaries?
00:05:59The Thracians?
00:06:02The Arabs?
00:06:04They were wiped out.
00:06:06And my ships?
00:06:08All sunk. Off Actium.
00:06:11But I swear to you that they fought valorously and bravely.
00:06:14And they would surely have held out longer if Antony's men had not given in and taken to flight.
00:06:23Antony was doomed from the moment that he met Cleopatra.
00:06:27My king, she was the only one who was faithful to him to the end.
00:06:31The end?
00:06:32He had no other choice but suicide.
00:06:35Who loses must pay.
00:06:38And I have lost with the others.
00:06:40Herod, where are our sons?
00:06:45Listen to my people.
00:06:54Lift your voices in thanks to God.
00:06:57To Him who has not abandoned us.
00:07:00To Him who has heard the sound of our voices raised in lamentation.
00:07:14Herod, the heretic of the Lord!
00:07:24Listen to them.
00:07:25They can do nothing else but curse and pray.
00:07:28They are all wild dogs.
00:07:30Lunatic rebels.
00:07:32Exalted and deceived.
00:07:34They will soon feel the fist of Rome.
00:07:36But while I live, they will all know that Herod is their king.
00:07:40While you live, did you say?
00:07:43No one will ever see me in chains, Aaron.
00:07:46I alone will decide the time and the manner of my own end.
00:07:50There is only one thing that makes life worth living.
00:07:53To fight for something and for someone.
00:07:56For what?
00:07:57Is not my kingdom in ruins?
00:08:00And for whom?
00:08:03I am alone.
00:08:07Go, Aaron.
00:08:08My king, go.
00:08:13Farewell, my king.
00:08:26Orders of the king.
00:08:27No one may enter his chamber.
00:08:31But I can see my father.
00:08:33No.
00:08:34No one may see him.
00:08:36My father has not asked for me?
00:08:38No.
00:08:39I see.
00:08:40He asked for that woman and her son.
00:08:48Your hair, alive.
00:08:51Sarah, you must warn the queen at once.
00:08:53Only she can save him.
00:08:54Run to her and tell her to go to the king immediately.
00:08:57It's a question of life or death.
00:08:59Hurry, hurry.
00:09:07Well?
00:09:08They were the usual marketplace cries, Miriam.
00:09:10No, my brother.
00:09:11They were different voices.
00:09:13Something must have happened.
00:09:14My queen.
00:09:16Aaron ordered me to come to you.
00:09:17It's a question of life or death for the king.
00:09:19Hurry.
00:09:23Mother, what has happened to my husband?
00:09:25It's the end of him, Miriam.
00:09:27Antony has been defeated.
00:09:28God's mercy.
00:09:31Miriam.
00:09:33Don't go to him.
00:09:34Don't go to that man.
00:09:39My queen, Aaron said that nobody was to pass.
00:09:42Open.
00:09:49What are you doing here?
00:09:53I have come...
00:09:54To say goodbye.
00:09:58Because my place is at your side.
00:10:04Thank you, Miriam.
00:10:07But now I must be alone.
00:10:09And soon, before nightfall, you will be alone.
00:10:13There will be great rejoicing.
00:10:15And prayers of thanksgiving.
00:10:18The whole city is waiting.
00:10:20Do you think that I do not know it?
00:10:22They are all out there.
00:10:23In the corridors, the streets, the squares.
00:10:26Waiting.
00:10:27All asking one another.
00:10:29Is he still alive?
00:10:30Don't talk like that.
00:10:32It's not the first time that fate is against you.
00:10:35You must fight.
00:10:36Fight back.
00:10:38Why are you saying this?
00:10:40Because I love you.
00:10:47Three years ago, when you forced me to be your wife,
00:10:50I hated you.
00:10:52Your power frightened me.
00:10:54But then your love lit mine so much,
00:10:56that I don't know which flame burns more.
00:11:00Your heart is good.
00:11:01I know it.
00:11:02It's other people's hate that made you who you are.
00:11:04Do not leave me.
00:11:06You must live.
00:11:10But if you have decided,
00:11:12then take me with you.
00:11:15Oh, if I could believe you.
00:11:16You must.
00:11:17If I could.
00:11:18If you could.
00:11:20Then they would not triumph over me.
00:11:23Let's flee together.
00:11:24To the desert, the mountains,
00:11:26where no Roman soldier will ever find us.
00:11:28Miriam, it will be as king or not at all.
00:11:31You were born a queen,
00:11:33and you shall remain so.
00:11:35This Octavian is not destiny.
00:11:37He is but a man.
00:11:38What will you do?
00:11:40I will live.
00:11:45For years, I've waited for these words of yours.
00:11:48And I bless my bad fortune.
00:11:51Because it has brought you close to me.
00:12:02Oh, it's you, is it?
00:12:04Shame on you.
00:12:05Always looking at yourself.
00:12:08Wait a moment.
00:12:09Why do you always hurry away?
00:12:11I don't want my mother to see us talking together.
00:12:13She doesn't like you.
00:12:15Does she comb your hair like a girl?
00:12:18It's disgusting.
00:12:20I'm going now.
00:12:21You think you're king.
00:12:22It's too soon.
00:12:24I don't understand.
00:12:26You're a queen.
00:12:27You're a queen.
00:12:28You're a queen.
00:12:29I don't understand.
00:12:30Your mother would.
00:12:32You're always playing games with words.
00:12:35What is it you really want?
00:12:37I want to know.
00:12:39Tell me if this is clear enough for you.
00:12:41Herod is finished.
00:12:43Either he'll commit suicide or they'll kill him.
00:12:46But...
00:12:47But you're speaking of your own father.
00:12:49He's always despised me.
00:12:51Perhaps because my mother was not noble like your sister.
00:12:56So, I ask myself what will happen to Antipater
00:12:59when the new king shall be Daniel.
00:13:02Have you already decided my fate?
00:13:05With your wickedness.
00:13:06Wickedness?
00:13:07It's my skin, Daniel.
00:13:09It's my skin.
00:13:12Trumpets.
00:13:13What does it mean?
00:13:15Today is the day of mourning.
00:13:18The army has been defeated.
00:13:20Many men will not return to their homes.
00:13:24We exalt their valor.
00:13:26They have fought for their king.
00:13:28The war has been lost.
00:13:30And it is my duty to think of the welfare of my people
00:13:34with different means from the arms which we no longer have.
00:13:38And it is for this reason that I have decided
00:13:41to go to Rhodes
00:13:43to pay homage to the new master of the world,
00:13:46the victorious Octavian.
00:13:49I see among you many anxious faces
00:13:52and the concern that you must have.
00:13:54But nobody speaks.
00:13:56Where are my counselors?
00:13:58Samaeus!
00:14:00You who were proclaimed the interpreter of the law,
00:14:04you were summoned here today, were you not?
00:14:06Why do you ask me?
00:14:08Generally, you prefer to listen only to your astrologers.
00:14:11Nabotsa!
00:14:15What do your planets say today?
00:14:17Do they speak ill for me?
00:14:19I am sorry for it, great king.
00:14:21But it is so. You should not go.
00:14:23I will not listen to predictions.
00:14:25Ezra!
00:14:26A ceremony will be held in the temple today at sunset
00:14:29for my safe journey.
00:14:31And thus, every day until I return. Do you understand?
00:14:35Yes, my king.
00:14:36Aaron, we leave at sunrise.
00:14:38Choose the escort.
00:14:40Depend upon me.
00:14:42Tares!
00:14:44My king?
00:14:45The troops will be drawn up for my departure
00:14:47and the square will be filled with cheering crowds.
00:14:50You shall be obeyed.
00:14:52Miriam.
00:14:54And Tares.
00:14:56During my absence,
00:14:58see to it that the snakes among us
00:15:00stay in their dens.
00:15:02Or when I return,
00:15:04I will change the color of this room to red.
00:15:10This won't be a pleasure journey, Olympe.
00:15:12That's the reason I ask the honor of being a part of the king's escort.
00:15:17Very well.
00:15:19You will go with us.
00:15:21Till tomorrow.
00:15:22I thank you, Aaron.
00:15:34What is it, Sarah?
00:15:36You've just come home and now you're leaving again.
00:15:39You make me the most unhappy wife in all the world.
00:15:47Herod needs me at his side.
00:15:50And you know I owe him everything.
00:15:53If it weren't for him, I would still be a petty chief
00:15:56in the desert of Dumea.
00:15:58My father met his death beside Herod
00:16:00in a battle against the Arabs.
00:16:02The king willed that I should go up in the palace
00:16:04as one of his family.
00:16:06I, too, owe him everything.
00:16:08But how can I ever forget
00:16:10that my own father was killed because of the king?
00:16:13He was a soldier.
00:16:14And you, too, are a soldier.
00:16:16And I fear that Herod will tear you from me, too.
00:16:19Dear Sarah, that will never happen.
00:16:22When I think of tomorrow...
00:16:24Don't think of it.
00:16:28Now I have you in my arms.
00:16:31Smile at me.
00:16:33Well, then.
00:16:34No matter whether the news is good or bad.
00:16:36But especially if it should be good.
00:16:38You understand me, don't you?
00:16:40Woe to the vanquished, is a Roman saying.
00:16:42And they're famous for applying it.
00:16:44Be careful.
00:16:45Make your escape in time.
00:16:47And remember.
00:16:48I must be the first to hear.
00:16:50Absolutely the first to hear
00:16:52of what has happened to Herod.
00:16:54I am a good horseman.
00:16:59You'll need money.
00:17:00Take this.
00:17:01I can't.
00:17:02I can't.
00:17:03I can't.
00:17:04I can't.
00:17:05I can't.
00:17:06You'll need money.
00:17:07Take this.
00:17:08My queen.
00:17:26How lovely you are.
00:17:30My love.
00:17:33Why do you look so troubled?
00:17:36I have been looking at you.
00:17:38And it seemed to me that...
00:17:40It seemed that you were surrounded by other men.
00:17:42And they were asking you.
00:17:43Is it possible that you could have loved such a monster?
00:17:46And you said.
00:17:47Let's not speak of it anymore.
00:17:50What are you saying?
00:17:53It was as though I had ceased to exist.
00:17:55Life still went on.
00:17:57You were still living.
00:17:59And you said to them.
00:18:00I never loved him.
00:18:01It is finished now.
00:18:03I want only to forget it.
00:18:06Only a moment ago.
00:18:08I was lying in your arms.
00:18:11Did you feel my heart?
00:18:13Did you feel the way it was beating?
00:18:16Do you think it was lying to you?
00:18:19Perhaps you were thinking.
00:18:21I must sweeten the last hours of this man.
00:18:24Every thought of yours is poisoned by suspicion.
00:18:27But you must trust me, your wife.
00:18:29You are so beautiful.
00:18:31The most powerful men in the world would throw their kingdoms at your feet.
00:18:36What a magnificent prize you will be for the victor.
00:18:39They will forgive you that you were Herod's wife.
00:18:42Other men will hold you in their arms.
00:18:47Is your faith in me so miserable?
00:18:50Your blood is young.
00:18:52It will want to live and will revolt at the thought of a dead man.
00:18:57You must not say that word.
00:18:59You told me that you have hopes.
00:19:01And I also have hopes.
00:19:03You told me that you will come back and I know you will.
00:19:06And nothing will cast this thought from my mind.
00:19:09Is your anxiety then so little?
00:19:11My confidence is so great.
00:19:13God will not part us.
00:19:15Then if I ask you.
00:19:18Will you promise me that if I should...
00:19:27It is time.
00:19:29We must leave each other.
00:19:31What do you want me to do?
00:19:32Ask me.
00:19:34Ask me.
00:19:40Nothing, my love.
00:19:42Nothing.
00:19:43It was madness.
00:19:46But if there is no madness.
00:19:48There is no love.
00:19:57TARES
00:20:10Tares.
00:20:11What does this mean?
00:20:14They have shut themselves up in their houses.
00:20:17To get them out will require a massacre.
00:20:20If you order me to.
00:20:22Perhaps I will.
00:20:24When I return.
00:20:26Now we do not have the time.
00:20:28May the Lord go with you, my king.
00:20:39May the Lord prevent your return.
00:20:54JUDEA
00:21:10You have never come into this room before.
00:21:13You are wrong.
00:21:15I used to live here once.
00:21:17When my family reigned over Judea.
00:21:20It was our family.
00:21:22I wonder if you remember the blood you bear.
00:21:24Everyone does.
00:21:25The family of heroes.
00:21:26That's how we're known to the people.
00:21:28Because through the centuries we have dedicated our lives to them.
00:21:32And now this chosen people of the Lord.
00:21:35Must bear the domination of a proconsul of pagan Rome.
00:21:38No proconsul will ever dominate our land.
00:21:41Don't you think that Herod will return then?
00:21:44Or at least.
00:21:46That he has made secret agreements.
00:21:48With Octavian.
00:21:50He's always been a master of double dealing.
00:21:52Hasn't he?
00:21:53As far as double dealing goes, mother.
00:21:56I know someone else who is also a master.
00:21:59I was filled with joy when I saw you here.
00:22:01I needed a word of comfort.
00:22:04But you just came to make me suffer.
00:22:07What is it that binds you to that Idomenean barbarian then?
00:22:10Your marriage to him was an insult to our name.
00:22:13He has humiliated you.
00:22:14He's contaminated you.
00:22:15You ought to hate him.
00:22:17It's not love.
00:22:18It's nothing but the senses.
00:22:20He has bound you to him.
00:22:22You fill me with disgust.
00:22:23My daughter.
00:22:24You cannot admit that I love him.
00:22:26And you also cannot admit that I love the son that he gave to me.
00:22:30Look at him.
00:22:32Since he came into this world you never came to see him.
00:22:35For you he is Herod's child.
00:22:37That is his fault.
00:22:40He has a face that is so sweet.
00:22:43So tiny and fragile.
00:22:46Like all other children.
00:22:48But for you he is Herod's child.
00:22:50If Daniel were king the people would be spared the shame of a Roman proconsul.
00:22:54I've come to you to know if you would be opposed to the project.
00:22:57I am only awaiting his return.
00:23:00What a sad thing that mother and daughter should be so divided.
00:23:16Go no further.
00:23:36The Romans are killing everybody.
00:23:38My king.
00:23:45What do you intend to do now?
00:23:48I shall go on as I have planned.
00:23:51To Rhodes.
00:23:52You, Aron, will return to the palace.
00:23:55My king, allow me to go with you.
00:23:58I know that you are loyal and brave.
00:24:00And it is for this reason that I have chosen you.
00:24:03For a task.
00:24:04Order me.
00:24:07Aron, if I should not return from Rhodes.
00:24:09My king.
00:24:10If, I said, I should not return.
00:24:15I do not want to be alone after my death.
00:24:19I want her to be with me.
00:24:22She whom I love.
00:24:24She whom you love?
00:24:26Swear that you will obey me.
00:24:30I swear it.
00:24:33I want you to go back to the palace.
00:24:35And stay by her.
00:24:36And protect her.
00:24:38While I live.
00:24:40But if the news should arrive.
00:24:41Yes, my king.
00:24:43She must not even suspect my order.
00:24:46You understand?
00:24:47I understand.
00:24:53Did he give you a message for me?
00:24:55He ordered me to stay close to you and to protect you.
00:24:58He is depriving himself.
00:25:00Of his most valiant and loyal man.
00:25:03It's strange.
00:25:05How was he when you left him?
00:25:06Despairing.
00:25:07Herod knows how to confront destiny.
00:25:09I would love to have his strength.
00:25:12I wonder when he will come back.
00:25:14By now he should be nearing the island of Rhodes.
00:25:17Answer me, Aron.
00:25:18And be sincere.
00:25:20What do you think will happen at Rhodes?
00:25:23Do you think he will return?
00:25:25He will return.
00:25:28I wish it as much as you.
00:25:30If any news arrives.
00:25:32Advise me at once.
00:25:34Rest assured that I will, my queen.
00:25:36You may go now, Aron.
00:25:37You must be very tired.
00:25:46Aron!
00:25:58Why do you think he has returned?
00:26:02Herod has sent us his strong right arm.
00:26:05His keen and watchful eye.
00:26:07His very shadow.
00:26:10Like Herod, Aron is Edomian.
00:26:13A race which has brought misfortune to our land.
00:26:16Let us hope it will bring misfortune to Aron also.
00:26:23And so Cleopatra.
00:26:27Queen of Egypt.
00:26:30Took her own life.
00:26:32By causing an asp to bite her.
00:26:37The God's venerable fathers of us all.
00:26:41I will that she shall not follow in chains.
00:26:44The commander, Claudius Severus.
00:27:03Hail, Octavian.
00:27:04On the coast of Africa, near Actium,
00:27:06Herod has been taken prisoner with some 100 armed men.
00:27:10Where were they headed?
00:27:11Here.
00:27:12If it's true as they say that Herod is a madman,
00:27:15this is certain proof of it.
00:27:17He has asked to see you.
00:27:18He wants to speak to you.
00:27:20He probably wishes to beg for clemency.
00:27:22I cannot be clement with a man who is arrayed as mercenaries
00:27:25on the side of the traitor Anthony.
00:27:27What shall we do with him then?
00:27:29Bring him before me.
00:27:31I want to know him.
00:27:32I shall measure the pride of one who calls himself Herod the Great.
00:27:39Be careful of him, Octavian.
00:27:41Herod is very clever at the use of the treacherous weapon of deceit.
00:27:46He is very shrewd.
00:27:49I have crushed other serpents.
00:27:52Surely more poisonous than he.
00:27:55You will wait before concluding my message to the Senate.
00:27:59Perhaps we may also add that my triumphal chariot in Rome
00:28:02will be followed in chains by the king of Judea,
00:28:06Herod the Great.
00:28:10Who saw you enter?
00:28:11Only my servant.
00:28:26Continue.
00:28:27He was chained, as I have told you, as soon as he dismounted from his horse.
00:28:30Then he was dragged in the dust like a slave who has been condemned to death.
00:28:34The commander then ordered him to be lashed.
00:28:36The people covered him with spittle and insults.
00:28:39Well, and then?
00:28:41I thought it best not to stay longer
00:28:43since the soldiers of our king's escort had already been taken prisoner.
00:28:47You will soon hear confirmation of the execution of Herod.
00:28:53The news has already arrived, Oleb.
00:28:55How?
00:28:56You have brought it.
00:28:57I?
00:28:58Would you like to become commander of the guards?
00:29:02Do as I tell you and you will.
00:29:05I obey, my queen.
00:29:08And after he was bound with heavy chains,
00:29:10he was dragged into the presence of Octavian.
00:29:13But he was already a corpse when he got there
00:29:15from the numerous wounds he had received
00:29:17from the soldiers and the rabble along the way.
00:29:20I myself saw a Roman centurion plunge his sword into his back.
00:29:26Then he is dead.
00:29:28Herod's body was devoured by dogs outside the city walls.
00:29:32If the Romans find our country torn by disorders,
00:29:35they will impose a proconsul upon us
00:29:37and we must avoid this absolutely
00:29:40or it will mean the end of our independence.
00:29:43That must never come to pass.
00:29:44Let Daniel be the new king.
00:29:47Agreed.
00:29:48But let us not forget that there are still many
00:29:50who are faithful to our tyrant.
00:29:53People bow to him by blood and self-interest.
00:29:56They will be our enemies.
00:29:57We must strike them down before they can act.
00:30:10I am with you.
00:30:11Daniel is king.
00:30:13It's just.
00:30:18My father was a monster.
00:30:20I will tell it to the people.
00:30:21I will tell it to the people before all of you.
00:30:24No one could do it better than I can.
00:30:28You can trust me.
00:30:37I am with you.
00:30:40I am with you.
00:30:45Answer me.
00:30:48No.
00:30:50No.
00:30:51No.
00:30:55What are we to do with him?
00:30:57He'll get what he deserves.
00:30:59However, he is not dangerous.
00:31:03Aaron is dangerous.
00:31:05He must be eliminated.
00:31:08I approve.
00:31:11Tonight.
00:31:13It's your concern.
00:31:14You are his friend.
00:31:21Aaron.
00:31:22Aaron, save me.
00:31:23Save me.
00:31:24The soldiers have completely surrounded the palace.
00:31:26There's no way for me to escape.
00:31:27What's the matter with you now?
00:31:28There's no hope for me.
00:31:30My father is dead.
00:31:32What?
00:31:33Yes.
00:31:34You are lying.
00:31:35You are lying.
00:31:36No, no.
00:31:37They want to kill me too.
00:31:38I saw it in their faces.
00:31:39They've condemned me to death just because I am his son.
00:31:41And who came back with this news?
00:31:42I don't want to die, Aaron.
00:31:44I want to live.
00:31:45Help me, Aaron.
00:31:46You must help me.
00:31:47Olive.
00:31:49Is it true?
00:31:51Is Herod dead?
00:31:52Yes.
00:31:53I must speak with you.
00:31:55I wanted to go and kneel before Octavian
00:31:57and entreat him to deliver me the remains of the king
00:32:00for an honorable entombment in Jerusalem.
00:32:03But I feared for my own life.
00:32:06I confess it.
00:32:08By disguising myself in these clothes,
00:32:10I was able to escape.
00:32:19To die like that.
00:32:21A great king.
00:32:23So great that even destiny itself seemed to be subject to him.
00:32:29How much he would have regretted not falling in battle.
00:32:34We served him faithfully to the very end.
00:32:37I must serve him even beyond the end.
00:32:40What did you say?
00:32:42He gave me an order.
00:32:49Have you gone mad?
00:32:58Have pity.
00:32:59Have pity.
00:33:00Pity.
00:33:09You.
00:33:11My closest friend.
00:33:13Why?
00:33:16They ordered me.
00:33:19To do it.
00:33:22Olive.
00:33:27Aaron.
00:33:28What's happened?
00:33:31He was my friend.
00:33:33And he tried to murder me.
00:33:37The palace is in great turmoil.
00:33:38Is it true what they're saying?
00:33:39The king.
00:33:40It's true.
00:33:42Go back to your chamber.
00:33:43And you.
00:33:45There is something that I have to do.
00:33:48Listen to me, Aaron.
00:33:49There will be a new king.
00:33:51New factions will command in the palace.
00:33:53Don't set yourself against them.
00:33:54Aaron.
00:33:55Go back to your chamber as I told you.
00:33:58And don't leave it again.
00:34:18No.
00:34:25Take the baby.
00:34:32Any news?
00:34:34Yes, my queen.
00:34:41Dead?
00:34:46I should have stopped him.
00:34:48He shouldn't have gone.
00:34:51It's my fault.
00:34:55I can't live any longer without him.
00:35:03Aaron.
00:35:04I implore you.
00:35:06Aaron.
00:35:07Kill me.
00:35:10Kill me.
00:35:12Do as I tell you.
00:35:15Kill me.
00:35:19I can't.
00:35:21It's what he himself ordered me to do.
00:35:25But I can't.
00:35:28He...
00:35:30I have always obeyed my king.
00:35:33When he has wished it, I have killed for him with these hands.
00:35:37But now...
00:35:39You know.
00:35:41You must go on living.
00:35:44This is what he wanted?
00:35:47What has been cannot be changed.
00:35:50Now you must find new strength.
00:35:52And think only of the present and of the future.
00:35:54Of the future?
00:35:55And of your son.
00:35:57It is for him that you must live.
00:35:58To see him grown up and sitting upon the throne of his father.
00:36:01One day you are sure to be proud of him.
00:36:04Now you must think of the life of your son.
00:36:05What are you saying?
00:36:07A revolt is on the point of breaking out of the palace here.
00:36:09There will be plenty of bloodshed and your son will be sacrificed for reasons of state.
00:36:13Does this not move you?
00:36:14No.
00:36:15My baby.
00:36:16Who?
00:36:17My mother?
00:36:18It is she who is behind the plotting.
00:36:19And even if she did try to save him, the others would prevent her.
00:36:23Forget about Herod.
00:36:24And about yourself.
00:36:25If you really love your baby.
00:36:29Idiot.
00:36:33Aaron was quicker than he was.
00:36:35Now he will arouse his guards.
00:36:37Aaron and all his guard have fled from the palace with the queen and the little prince.
00:36:44I would have preferred to see Aaron in his place.
00:36:55Here is Herod the Great.
00:36:59Why are his eyes shut?
00:37:01Seven days in the dark, Octavian.
00:37:06Bring him here.
00:37:08Seven days in the dark you can stand, you can sleep.
00:37:11But without water.
00:37:15Do you want water?
00:37:19I want to talk to you.
00:37:21What do you hope to obtain?
00:37:23You are now my prisoner.
00:37:26If you had captured me, Octavian, then I should expect to be killed.
00:37:31But I came here of my own free will.
00:37:34Do you think that will soften your fate?
00:37:36Yes.
00:37:37Because I have the right.
00:37:38The vanquished have no rights.
00:37:41But a king who comes himself to the enemy camp.
00:37:44And presents himself to the victor.
00:37:47Has to be listened to.
00:37:48Not out of generosity.
00:37:50But for your own good.
00:37:52Do you think Octavian should learn the arts of war from you?
00:37:55No.
00:37:57Victorious Octavian.
00:37:59But the politics and life of these oriental countries.
00:38:02Especially where my Judea is concerned.
00:38:05You will find that it is not like other countries.
00:38:07You're astute and ready with your words, Herod.
00:38:11But Rome has no interest in speeches.
00:38:13It is interested in faithful allies in those regions where its frontiers are threatened.
00:38:17In Judea, cunning and experience serve better.
00:38:20These were my weapons.
00:38:22Who will collect your taxes?
00:38:24No one has been able to collect them from that people.
00:38:27Except Herod.
00:38:29Why then seek a new man when you already have one who can be useful to you?
00:38:33If you replace me.
00:38:35Then you will have to send many legions.
00:38:37Which you need elsewhere.
00:38:40Must I forget that you put your entire forces in the field against me?
00:38:44That you were faithful to Anthony to the very end?
00:38:46Yes, I was faithful.
00:38:48And this from a Roman is the greatest tribute that you could pay me.
00:38:52Do not think of whom I was a friend.
00:38:54Think of how I was a friend.
00:38:56And I will be the same to you too.
00:38:58Your friendship shifts easily from vanquished to victor.
00:39:00Your friendship shifts easily from vanquished to victor.
00:39:02Like a chariot in the circus racing from one turning post to the other.
00:39:06You are very astute, Herod.
00:39:08But if you try your shrewdness against the forces of justice.
00:39:10It will have no effect upon me.
00:39:12As your arms have no effect upon Rome.
00:39:15Take this man away.
00:39:20Tell him executed, Caius Octavian.
00:39:22He will stand as an example to the other petty sovereigns who think of rebelling against Rome.
00:39:26Along the coast of Asia.
00:39:28I haven't decided what is to be his fate.
00:39:31Whether he will follow in chains my triumph in Rome.
00:39:34Or whether he will remain on this coast as a perennial warning of our strength.
00:39:38And of our greatness.
00:39:41He deserves only one fate.
00:39:43His death.
00:39:46Let us leave it to the gods to enlighten us.
00:39:51I give no consideration to my personal sympathies, Claudius Severus.
00:39:56But only to the future of the empire.
00:39:59It is written.
00:40:01I have cried to the Lord for a long time.
00:40:04And he has listened to my cry.
00:40:06And he has drawn me out of the quagmire of despond.
00:40:09And he has placed my feet upon the firm rock.
00:40:12Daniel.
00:40:14Remember these words.
00:40:17And may your reign be as a rock.
00:40:19For the glory of the Lord and of Israel.
00:40:21May you be an example of virtue.
00:40:23To the end that the mire which covers this throne.
00:40:25Through the guilt of an impious king.
00:40:27Shall be washed away.
00:40:31Look.
00:40:32What's happening?
00:40:33Who are they?
00:40:35It's the Romans.
00:40:36Get away.
00:40:37Get away.
00:40:54The Romans are coming.
00:40:55Here?
00:40:56Yes.
00:40:57They're in front of the palace.
00:40:59Go on with the coronation.
00:41:00Hurry, you must act quickly.
00:41:02Ezra, accompany him to the throne.
00:41:10Place the crown upon his head.
00:41:12And the crown upon his head.
00:41:14And the crown upon his head.
00:41:16And the crown upon his head.
00:41:18And the crown upon his head.
00:41:20And the crown upon his head.
00:41:22Place the crown upon his head.
00:41:31Proclaim him the new king of Judea.
00:41:34For the glory of the Lord of Israel.
00:41:36And of all Israel.
00:41:37The great king of Judea.
00:41:39The great king of Judea.
00:42:01What's going on?
00:42:02Is it a feast perhaps?
00:42:05Claudius.
00:42:06You will find many strange things about this country.
00:42:08They do not perform on the stage.
00:42:10As they do in Rome and Greece.
00:42:12Here they recite their parts in palaces.
00:42:15And the characters are not played by actors.
00:42:17They are real.
00:42:19An ambitious queen mother.
00:42:20A traitor general.
00:42:22I was faithful to you my king as long as I believed you were alive.
00:42:26And all are gathered here to perform a comedy.
00:42:29A crowning ceremony.
00:42:35What did you say?
00:42:36The sad news of your death came to our ears.
00:42:39As a grievous thing for us all my king.
00:42:45Where is the queen?
00:42:50Where is Aaron?
00:42:55You thought that I was dead?
00:42:56Yes my king.
00:42:57Only brought back this terrible news to us.
00:43:04Out of my way.
00:43:07By order of Octavian Augustus.
00:43:09Emperor of the Romans.
00:43:11Hered is king of Judea.
00:43:14To him.
00:43:15The people and all of you here.
00:43:17Oh absolute obedience.
00:43:20Father.
00:43:21Oh father you are alive.
00:43:22Yes, yes.
00:43:23I have returned as I promised.
00:43:24I had to hide myself.
00:43:25It is as much a miracle that I am alive as it is you have come back.
00:43:27Tell me where is the queen?
00:43:28Kill them father.
00:43:29Avenge yourself.
00:43:30Destroy them all.
00:43:31Where is the queen?
00:43:32Will you answer me where is the queen?
00:43:34Will you answer me where is the queen?
00:43:36Where is Aaron?
00:43:37I asked his help but he refused it.
00:43:38He only thought of protecting her.
00:43:40I am asking you where is the queen?
00:43:42What has happened to my wife?
00:43:43She has fled.
00:43:45Fled?
00:43:46With him.
00:43:51But she is safe.
00:43:55Where is she?
00:43:56Ask Sarah.
00:43:59Father.
00:44:00Kill them father.
00:44:01Kill them father.
00:44:02Kill them.
00:44:04Sarah.
00:44:08My king.
00:44:09Where is Aaron?
00:44:11Well answer me woman.
00:44:12You must know.
00:44:14I know.
00:44:15Is the queen with him?
00:44:16Is she safe?
00:44:17Yes.
00:44:19Come then.
00:44:20Show me where they are.
00:44:30Miriam.
00:44:35Only now do I feel that I am alive.
00:44:39Now that I hold you in my arms.
00:44:42Smell your perfume.
00:44:44Nothing else exists now.
00:44:46The expectation of death.
00:44:49The distance longing for you.
00:44:53And the terror that I might have lost you.
00:44:55This moment makes up for everything.
00:45:01Speak to me.
00:45:05You are here.
00:45:06You have come back.
00:45:08I thank God.
00:45:09It was not your God that saved Herod.
00:45:12He saved himself.
00:45:14Why do you look at me like this?
00:45:16Something has changed.
00:45:19Changed?
00:45:20In you.
00:45:21If you had loved me.
00:45:22How could you have thought?
00:45:24Decided?
00:45:25How could you have ordered?
00:45:26Where is Aaron?
00:45:28Gathering together the men who are still faithful to you.
00:45:31Because Herod is thought dead.
00:45:32And so that his son may be able to reign.
00:45:36Do you not ask me why?
00:45:37Why he did not do it?
00:45:39I do not know.
00:45:41I only know that I could not order someone.
00:45:43To go and kill the one person I loved.
00:45:47Do you not understand Miriam?
00:45:49Do you not understand what my love is for you?
00:45:52When you were ill two years ago.
00:45:54When you almost died.
00:45:56I determined then that if your illness should take you from me.
00:45:59That I would not continue without you.
00:46:02Or without you.
00:46:04There would be nothing.
00:46:06Is it so strange then that I should demand the same from you?
00:46:10But you did not demand it.
00:46:12Instead you put an assassin at my side.
00:46:15And it was only through his mercy.
00:46:18That you did not find my grave on your return.
00:46:20Did you even think of your son?
00:46:23Aaron did.
00:46:24Aaron.
00:46:26Not only did he reveal what he should have kept to himself.
00:46:28But now he has made you my enemy.
00:46:30Enemy?
00:46:31Me.
00:46:33Oh, Miriam.
00:46:35Oh, forget my madness.
00:46:38I have returned to you.
00:46:40And you have not even given me a smile.
00:46:53Ah, what a joy it is to be home again, Claudius.
00:46:57Among my people.
00:46:58I know that you are homesick for your Rome.
00:47:01But we will do our best to make your stay with us a pleasant one.
00:47:04To make this evening unforgettable.
00:47:07Friends, let us show our guests from Rome.
00:47:10That peace, joy and happiness reign in Herod's palace.
00:47:15You will find, Claudius.
00:47:17That my people are reticent to display their emotions.
00:47:20When they are overcome with joy.
00:47:24Wine!
00:47:29Let us drink to the new peace of Rome.
00:47:33The peace of those who have eliminated their enemies.
00:47:37To Claudius Severus.
00:47:40A strong wine.
00:47:42Which can overcome the dryness of stones.
00:47:51And now, for some of my other favorite wines.
00:47:55To Alessandra.
00:47:57The pride of Israel.
00:47:59The noble representative of her most noble blood.
00:48:06I don't drink, as you know.
00:48:09But for once, you must drink.
00:48:20And for my wife, Alessandra.
00:48:23And for my friends.
00:48:26The wines that they most deserve.
00:48:29Tares.
00:48:31A rock of unshakable faithfulness.
00:48:33For you, the same.
00:48:38And Sameas.
00:48:40For you.
00:48:42For you a wine that is cool and limpid.
00:48:44Like wisdom.
00:48:46And if you should find it somewhat bitter.
00:48:49Then blame my wisdom.
00:48:50For there is always something bitter in it.
00:48:54What is the matter?
00:48:56Are you ill?
00:48:59Herod.
00:49:01I said drink.
00:49:07Toast the health of your king!
00:49:09Toast the health of your king!
00:49:19Are you all afraid to drink my wine?
00:49:24Your fear has given you away.
00:49:39My king!
00:49:41Little Prince Daniel!
00:49:43There, in the pool!
00:49:45No!
00:49:47Daniel!
00:49:59He's dead?
00:50:02Yes.
00:50:04Dad!
00:50:06No!
00:50:07No!
00:50:09No!
00:50:11My son!
00:50:13My son!
00:50:15No!
00:50:17He can't be dead!
00:50:19Open your eyes!
00:50:21Listen to me!
00:50:23Speak to me!
00:50:25No!
00:50:27Take away my life!
00:50:29My life!
00:50:37Poor unfortunate boy.
00:50:42You murderer!
00:50:48I can understand your sorrow, Alexandra.
00:50:52Abomination!
00:50:54I knew it!
00:50:56I felt it!
00:50:58It was you who had him killed!
00:51:00You!
00:51:02He did not know how to swim.
00:51:04He must have fallen in while playing.
00:51:05Be quiet!
00:51:07Be quiet! I hate you!
00:51:09How dare you! He is the king!
00:51:11Leave her alone!
00:51:13She is his mother.
00:51:15Unfortunate Daniel.
00:51:17You had your whole life before you.
00:51:20You could have aspired to great things.
00:51:23Your blood gave you the right.
00:51:26I wish that he be buried as a king.
00:51:29With full honors.
00:51:31Exactly as would have been given to Herod.
00:51:35If Herod...
00:51:37...had died.
00:51:45Do not touch him!
00:51:47Mother!
00:51:49You are not my daughter!
00:51:51You are not Daniel's sister!
00:51:53You are only the woman of that murderer!
00:51:55You are his accomplice!
00:51:57Mother, what are you saying?
00:51:59Do not try to win me with false tears!
00:52:01Revenge your brother!
00:52:02You must kill him and free us from that monster!
00:52:10My son!
00:52:12My dear son!
00:52:16Look at me!
00:52:29I implore you!
00:52:30Give me an answer for this!
00:52:32The king does not answer to anyone!
00:52:34The king, no!
00:52:36But my husband, yes!
00:52:39Say only a word!
00:52:41A single word to take away this terrible thought from my mind!
00:52:45Say it was an accident!
00:52:47I have already said that it was!
00:52:49Look at me!
00:52:51And tell me again! Now!
00:52:53Answer me this question, Miriam!
00:52:55Miriam!
00:52:59Which is the dealer to you?
00:53:02Your brother's life or mine?
00:53:04Supposing you had to choose?
00:53:05Nobody can demand such a choice!
00:53:07Very well then, let us suppose that the brother intended to kill the husband, what then?
00:53:11This is your answer then!
00:53:13You had him killed!
00:53:15Listen to what I am saying!
00:53:17Let us suppose a king...
00:53:20...who is surrounded by enemies.
00:53:21He reads in everyone's eyes, lies, hatred, treachery!
00:53:25His throne and his life are in danger!
00:53:28And in the middle of this rising tide, a brother?
00:53:32The queen's brother?
00:53:35This king, what should he do?
00:53:37Should he not forestall his enemies and strike first?
00:53:40You revenged yourself on a poor young boy!
00:53:45As a queen and as a wife, you should have replied that what has been done could not have been avoided!
00:53:50I hated those who hated you!
00:53:52The courtiers who were betraying you!
00:53:54The Pharisees who were inciting the people!
00:53:57And even those who came by night and soiled the palace walls with insults!
00:54:01I even made an enemy of my mother!
00:54:03For you!
00:54:05Because...
00:54:07Because I loved you!
00:54:10There is no room for weakness in this world.
00:54:15One must strike first.
00:54:16Or be destroyed.
00:54:19Perhaps your enemies are no better than you.
00:54:22Perhaps they don't have the right to hate you.
00:54:24But I don't have the right to love you.
00:54:27Something is dead in me now.
00:54:30You killed it.
00:54:32No, you must not talk like this.
00:54:35You do not know what you are saying.
00:54:38It is because of what has happened that now you say things that you do not mean.
00:54:42Later you will understand.
00:54:43Miriam.
00:54:45It was said that Daniel looked like me.
00:54:48That he had my face.
00:54:50And my eyes.
00:54:52Do you still want to embrace me?
00:54:54Do not speak of him anymore!
00:54:56Leave me! Let me go!
00:54:59But I need you.
00:55:01Herod needs nobody.
00:55:06Then go!
00:55:08And join my enemies!
00:55:10The only real enemy you have is yourself!
00:55:12Miriam!
00:55:17What are you doing here?
00:55:21I heard you.
00:55:23And you dare to admit it?
00:55:25Is it strange that I should give thought to my father?
00:55:27That I should worry if his honor is betrayed?
00:55:31And suffer?
00:55:33When I realize that though he is still alive,
00:55:35he is no longer my father.
00:55:37He is dead.
00:55:38And suffer?
00:55:40When I realize that though he is strong with others,
00:55:43he is a weakling before his wife.
00:55:45Get out of here!
00:55:47How true it is that every man shapes his ruin with his own hands.
00:55:51Antipater.
00:55:53You are twisted and malicious.
00:55:56If you have something to say, then say it or go.
00:55:59Have you no trust in me?
00:56:01Not much, but go on.
00:56:03You would only consider it malice. I would gain nothing but your anger.
00:56:06Speak!
00:56:08When you thought you were dead, they wanted to crown another king.
00:56:11Maybe your wife, when she thought you were dead.
00:56:14What?
00:56:16Yes, it could be.
00:56:19I'll break your neck, Casio!
00:56:22How dare you insinuate such a thing?
00:56:25Tell me the truth or I'll break you in two!
00:56:28Let me go! You're right!
00:56:30I take back everything I said!
00:56:32Who is the man? Who is he?
00:56:34The man?
00:56:36Just think about it for a moment.
00:56:39Who is there here in the palace who is young enough?
00:56:42Whose aspect is vigorous and slightly vulgar such as women like?
00:56:47Do you want his name?
00:56:49But you already know, father.
00:56:53Aron!
00:56:55You've said it.
00:56:57The most faithful!
00:57:00They're always the ones.
00:57:02What else do you know?
00:57:04That they were together, they escaped together and they live together both day and night.
00:57:07And if you observe well, there's something between them.
00:57:11Like a communion of thoughts.
00:57:13I want facts!
00:57:15You ask too much.
00:57:17In their intimate moments, naturally, I was not there.
00:57:25If you have lied to me...
00:57:28It was much more dangerous to tell you the truth.
00:57:37Last night I was finally able to sleep a little.
00:57:41It was so wonderful.
00:57:43I dreamed of my Daniel.
00:57:46Do you recall how he was as a baby with his long hair hanging down on his shoulders?
00:57:51My poor little baby.
00:57:54It was all my fault.
00:57:56I wanted to make him king and I lost it.
00:58:00Mother, don't cry.
00:58:07The baby has just woken up, my queen.
00:58:13Don't cry, mother.
00:58:15Please.
00:58:21Sarah!
00:58:23What has happened to you?
00:58:25Aron has disappeared and they've appointed a new commander of the royal guard.
00:58:29I'm afraid, my queen.
00:58:31I'm afraid!
00:58:33But you should inquire of the new commander.
00:58:36I have asked him but he wouldn't answer me.
00:58:39No one will tell me anything.
00:58:41You must help me, my queen.
00:58:43Only you can ask the king where he is.
00:58:45I cannot.
00:58:47But it's a question of Aron's life.
00:58:49If he has fallen into disgrace...
00:58:51In disgrace.
00:58:53You know what will happen to him.
00:58:55In disgrace.
00:58:57But it's impossible.
00:58:59He was Herod's best friend.
00:59:01They are the ones the tyrants strike down first.
00:59:03Forgive my boldness.
00:59:04I can't stand it anymore. I'm going mad.
00:59:06He is everything to me.
00:59:08Don't cry, Sarah.
00:59:10I will help you.
00:59:12Wait for me.
00:59:14Mother, please.
00:59:16Take care of the baby.
00:59:20Your orders have been faithfully executed, my king.
00:59:22Samaeus and the commander Circa have been put in chains.
00:59:25Don't tell me.
00:59:27Tell the hangman.
00:59:30Ah, you could not have come at a better moment.
00:59:32Allow me to present to you our new commander of the guards.
00:59:35The valorous and faithful Ephraim.
00:59:37My sword and my life are dedicated to your cause.
00:59:41Well spoken, Ephraim.
00:59:43The queen appreciates your...
00:59:45Your good intentions.
00:59:47You may go now.
00:59:54I did not think that I should see you again.
00:59:57After all the days and nights that you have...
00:59:59Kept away from me.
01:00:00What have you done with your best friend?
01:00:02My best friend?
01:00:04But everyone here is a friend.
01:00:06You understood me very well.
01:00:08I am speaking about Aaron.
01:00:10Oh, Aaron.
01:00:12For some time now you have avoided me as if I were some plague.
01:00:16And now at last I see you again.
01:00:19Why is it, I wonder?
01:00:21Could it be perhaps that you are curious to know what has happened to Aaron?
01:00:25That you are pale.
01:00:27You are shaking.
01:00:28Why are you afraid?
01:00:30For him?
01:00:32Could it be that you are afraid something has happened to him?
01:00:35What have you done to him?
01:00:37You want to see him.
01:00:41Very well then.
01:00:43Come with me.
01:00:51Where are you taking me?
01:00:53Be patient.
01:00:55Now you can look at him.
01:00:56Now you can look at him.
01:01:01Why are you wasting time?
01:01:03The man is fainted, my king.
01:01:05Then let him know that we are here.
01:01:07Vinegar.
01:01:18Look at me.
01:01:21You recognize me?
01:01:22Aaron.
01:01:24Your king.
01:01:26No.
01:01:28Not any longer.
01:01:31You were ambitious, my little Idumean.
01:01:34Gathering together the desert tribes.
01:01:36For what?
01:01:38To steal the throne for her perhaps?
01:01:40And for yourself?
01:01:42No doubt you thought in your miserable little mind.
01:01:45Why not be daring as well?
01:01:48Did not Herod meet with success?
01:01:49And his courage and his greatness are in me too.
01:01:52What a pathetic and pale imitation.
01:01:55A jackal.
01:01:57Disguised as a lion.
01:01:59Look at yourself then and tell me who is king.
01:02:03Aaron.
01:02:06I can let you die quickly.
01:02:10Or I can keep you alive.
01:02:13I can keep you alive.
01:02:15I can keep you alive.
01:02:16Or I can keep you alive.
01:02:19So that you will curse the woman that brought you into this world.
01:02:23It depends on how you answer this question.
01:02:29How long has all this been going on between you?
01:02:33When did it start?
01:02:46No.
01:02:48When did it start?
01:02:50For how long have you two made Herod your fool?
01:02:54Continue.
01:02:56My king, this way he will die soon.
01:02:58I said continue.
01:03:00Stop, have mercy.
01:03:02I want the truth.
01:03:04None of it is true, none of it.
01:03:06Swear it to me.
01:03:07I swear it.
01:03:08Then prove it.
01:03:09What can I do?
01:03:11Kill him yourself and I will believe you.
01:03:13But he is innocent.
01:03:14He will be buried with full honors.
01:03:16But this is terrible.
01:03:18His life for our love.
01:03:20That is all I demand.
01:03:22It is the only proof that you can give me.
01:03:24The only proof that I will believe.
01:03:26Because you love him.
01:03:35Take her away.
01:03:45Again.
01:04:11Is it possible
01:04:12that he has been like that?
01:04:15He has always been possessed of the devil.
01:04:24Only you would never believe it.
01:04:26At one time Aaron would be safe.
01:04:30I would have confessed what I never committed
01:04:33even in my thoughts.
01:04:35I can't bear it anymore.
01:04:37There must be some way.
01:04:39Flight.
01:04:40What are you saying?
01:04:42Is it possible?
01:04:44Do you know?
01:04:46Tell me, I implore you.
01:04:48In the next change of the guard
01:04:50there will be men whom we can trust.
01:04:52The only faith of the guards
01:04:54is the fear of the master.
01:04:56Why should they risk their lives for Aaron?
01:04:58Not for Aaron, nor me, nor you.
01:05:00But for something that is worth the risk.
01:05:02Gold.
01:05:04He's right.
01:05:06Someone will always sell himself for gold.
01:05:08We must at least try.
01:05:10The recompense must be equal to the risk.
01:05:12I unfortunately possess nothing
01:05:14and my father hardly allows me enough to clothe me.
01:05:16But you, my queen,
01:05:18are resplendent with treasures.
01:05:20But negress alone.
01:05:26I don't know what's in your thoughts.
01:05:29But I know I must try to save Aaron.
01:05:33Have faith in me.
01:05:35I promised that Aaron would be saved.
01:05:37And I will keep my word.
01:05:41You may go now, sir.
01:06:03My beloved.
01:06:05Sarah.
01:06:11Now you'll be free again.
01:06:13They're going to carry you out of here
01:06:15in place of the body of Samias.
01:06:17Is he dead?
01:06:19Yes.
01:06:21Tortured to death.
01:06:23We must hurry.
01:06:25Come.
01:06:27I'll help you.
01:06:29Give me the reward you promised me now.
01:06:33Here it is.
01:06:35It's worth much more than what you deserve.
01:06:41It's all done as you wished, my lord.
01:06:43And the guard?
01:06:45He has been paid.
01:06:47You did not mention my name.
01:06:49Oh, no.
01:06:51I know that I can trust you.
01:06:53You may go.
01:07:10Sleep, my baby.
01:07:12Sleep.
01:07:17I don't want to see you anymore.
01:07:19Go away.
01:07:23Forgive me
01:07:25for what I have done to you.
01:07:27I've struck you.
01:07:29Marked you.
01:07:31Forgive me.
01:07:33I cannot sleep.
01:07:35I cannot rest.
01:07:37I've been thinking of many things.
01:07:38Of you.
01:07:40Of my son.
01:07:43My son?
01:07:45But, Herod, you are mad.
01:07:47What are you thinking?
01:07:52What shall I do?
01:07:55Aaron did not confess
01:07:57and he will die before a single word
01:07:59will pass his lips against you.
01:08:01And you say nothing?
01:08:03You hold within your hands my peace of mind
01:08:05and you do not want to speak.
01:08:06And you do not want to listen.
01:08:08I rule a mob of slaves
01:08:10but it is I who am the slave.
01:08:12Yes, your slave if you want it.
01:08:14Is it not possible again
01:08:16that you feel as I feel
01:08:18after all our happiness?
01:08:20Again?
01:08:23All that's happened seems so far away.
01:08:27It seems as if
01:08:29it happened to other people.
01:08:31Not to you and me.
01:08:33But it was to you and me!
01:08:34And it could still be so again if you want it.
01:08:39I will forgive everything
01:08:41if you are willing to be with me again.
01:08:44I will forget all that you have done.
01:08:46I pray God to enlighten you.
01:08:48I am not speaking of God.
01:08:50I'm speaking of ourselves.
01:08:52You must humble yourself.
01:08:54Ask my forgiveness.
01:08:57And then we will start afresh.
01:08:59Our love.
01:09:01Everything.
01:09:03Everything.
01:09:05You have insulted me like a courtesan
01:09:07and now you want to treat me like one.
01:09:09I ask you for the last time.
01:09:11No.
01:09:13Never!
01:09:26Get out of my sight!
01:09:28I know you don't want to listen to me, Father
01:09:30but Aaron has escaped.
01:09:32He's no longer in prison.
01:09:34What are you talking about?
01:09:36Someone must have bribed his guards.
01:09:39Who has bribed them?
01:09:41Come with me, Father.
01:09:46You sent for me to come to you.
01:09:48What is it, Miriam?
01:09:50This is horrible! I have married a monster
01:09:52and now God is punishing me.
01:09:54What can I do, Mother?
01:09:56Calm yourself, my daughter, calm yourself.
01:09:58Sit down here and tell me all that has happened.
01:09:59The child.
01:10:01My baby.
01:10:03I'm frightened.
01:10:05He looked at him in such a strange way
01:10:07and he was saying strange words
01:10:09as if he doubted that it was his child.
01:10:11Do you realize what that means?
01:10:13If he thinks that it is not his child
01:10:15he might even kill him.
01:10:17Yes, he is capable of it.
01:10:19You must help me.
01:10:21Take the baby, leave the palace and Jerusalem
01:10:23and go where nobody can find you.
01:10:25Save the baby.
01:10:27Very well.
01:10:29My poor daughter.
01:10:32Who gave you this?
01:10:34Speak up, man!
01:10:36It's the king who questioned you.
01:10:38Mohab, the old household slave.
01:10:41When I discovered it was Mohab
01:10:43he tried to kill me.
01:10:45I had to kill him in self-defense.
01:10:48Get rid of him.
01:10:50To the executioner!
01:10:52Have pity!
01:10:54Pity!
01:10:56I gave her this
01:10:58when I returned from Egypt.
01:11:03It's all clear.
01:11:08Yes.
01:11:10All is clear now.
01:11:19Tomorrow night we will be at my home, my queen.
01:11:22In Bethlehem.
01:11:23Go and tell me if you see anyone coming.
01:11:25Remember,
01:11:27he must live like all other children.
01:11:29It's the only way for him to be safe.
01:11:31No one will know he is the son of the king.
01:11:33Take good care of him.
01:11:35He is so sweet and so delicate.
01:11:37I know very well what it means to have children.
01:11:39If God wishes,
01:11:41after this storm has passed
01:11:43I will let you know.
01:11:45May the Lord protect you, my child.
01:11:47Wait!
01:11:49Who knows if I will ever see him again.
01:11:51The guards, my queen!
01:11:53They're coming here!
01:11:57One guard, stay here at the door.
01:11:59You two, come with me.
01:12:09Orders of the great and noble King Herod.
01:12:11From this moment on, you are a prisoner.
01:12:13You may not leave these chambers for any reason
01:12:15and no one may visit you.
01:12:17Tomorrow at the third hour
01:12:19you will be conducted to the executioner.
01:12:21You will be presented before the Grand Secretary
01:12:23in order to be judged.
01:12:25The executioner.
01:12:50You sent for me, Father?
01:12:52Well, what is happening?
01:12:54No, they must render justice to you.
01:12:55But why are they taking so long?
01:12:57The woman is clever.
01:12:58She talks well.
01:13:03Well, go back then and tell them to hurry this business.
01:13:24Slave, slave!
01:13:34My king.
01:13:35Look up there up in the sky.
01:13:37Tell me what do you see.
01:13:39Tell me.
01:13:41A miracle.
01:13:42Nabuchadnezzar, Nabuchadnezzar!
01:14:01Great king.
01:14:03What does it mean, this sign?
01:14:05According to my science or according
01:14:07to the superstition of the Judeans?
01:14:09It is to you that I put this question.
01:14:11Nabuchadnezzar, you know very well that tonight will be decided
01:14:14the fate of the woman who will be my wife.
01:14:18This celestial sign is a warning, perhaps, or an omen.
01:14:24Answer me!
01:14:26Great king, it is truly a sign of justice,
01:14:29an admonition to your enemies, an announcement of glory for you.
01:14:34Even if the false prophets pretend
01:14:36that this comet you see in the sky
01:14:38signifies the coming of the Messiah, the new king of Judea.
01:14:44My fortunes are reflected in the heavens.
01:14:48I need not have feared otherwise.
01:14:52Now all the people of Israel will see and understand
01:14:54that the stars protect Herod.
01:14:56Guilty.
01:15:07Guilty.
01:15:10Guilty.
01:15:11Guilty.
01:15:26Guilty.
01:15:36Did she admit to her guilt?
01:15:38No, my king.
01:15:40She did not confess?
01:15:43Then...
01:15:45Then she did not ask for mercy?
01:15:47No.
01:15:54Not for herself, but for those who were passing judgment upon her.
01:16:00She had no word, then, for the man she had offended?
01:16:06Nothing?
01:16:08For the king she had betrayed?
01:16:13What is your judgment?
01:16:15Ezra, the judgment!
01:16:18The great Sanhedrin has found the queen guilty of adultery as accused.
01:16:26She did not ask for mercy?
01:16:31It is not human.
01:16:34She will show her hatred of me to the end.
01:16:39Father, you must decide the punishment.
01:16:42She is an adulteress.
01:16:45The law shall be upheld.
01:16:48She shall be stoned to death.
01:16:56She shall be.
01:16:59Stoned to death.
01:17:03Tomorrow at sunset.
01:17:07What did you say?
01:17:08What did you say?
01:17:09I asked you if the execution is to take place tomorrow at sunset.
01:17:14Yes.
01:17:38One day I will sit upon this throne.
01:17:41One day I will sit upon this throne.
01:17:45One day I will sit upon this throne.
01:17:48One day I will sit upon this throne.
01:18:18Sarah!
01:18:20It's terrible.
01:18:22How it has condemned the queen to death.
01:18:26She is to be stoned today at sunset.
01:18:41Move your arm a little.
01:18:44That's right.
01:18:45Does it hurt?
01:18:46That's right.
01:18:47Does it hurt?
01:18:48Not much.
01:18:50You have nursed me well.
01:18:53Do you have any news of the queen?
01:18:56I've heard nothing.
01:18:57Well, then I must go myself.
01:18:58No, not yet.
01:19:04Do you love her, Aaron?
01:19:07Destiny has inexorably mingled our lives.
01:19:10Answer me. Do you love her?
01:19:11Yes.
01:19:13But you see, it isn't love as you understand it, Sarah.
01:19:22Everything that could ever pertain
01:19:25to the nobility of a woman,
01:19:28she possesses.
01:19:31The purity,
01:19:33the grace,
01:19:35the gentleness.
01:19:37One look from her,
01:19:38and one of her smiles
01:19:39to recompense any man
01:19:40for the greatest sacrifices.
01:19:43Herod does not deserve her.
01:19:46And he has been unjust.
01:19:48That is why
01:19:50I feel it my duty to defend her
01:19:53and to save her.
01:19:59Sarah!
01:20:01What is it?
01:20:04I'm afraid.
01:20:05What is it?
01:20:07I have to tell you then.
01:20:10No one can save the queen now.
01:20:13No one.
01:20:15Why not?
01:20:17Today,
01:20:19at sets,
01:20:20she's to be stoned.
01:20:22No.
01:20:26And you knew about this?
01:20:29I was jealous.
01:20:31I didn't want you to risk your life
01:20:32by trying to save her.
01:20:35You mustn't go.
01:20:37I love you.
01:20:38I couldn't bear to lose you.
01:20:40Detestable tyrant.
01:20:41So he has even come to this vileness.
01:20:43I won't allow him
01:20:44to commit such an infamous act.
01:20:45He's a giant, Aaron.
01:20:46He will crush you.
01:20:49Aaron!
01:20:50An eye for an eye.
01:20:52That's what he taught me.
01:20:55Aaron!
01:20:56Aaron, don't leave me.
01:20:57Don't leave me, Aaron.
01:20:58Let me go!
01:20:59Let me go!
01:21:02Aaron!
01:21:03Aaron, don't leave me!
01:21:04Aaron, don't leave me alone!
01:21:05Aaron!
01:21:06Aaron!
01:21:08Aaron!
01:21:09Aaron!
01:21:21Each of you will take command
01:21:22of his own men.
01:21:24The condemned woman
01:21:25will be conducted from her cell
01:21:26across the square
01:21:27to the wall
01:21:28outside the eastern gate.
01:21:29It's the king's order.
01:21:31In the square,
01:21:32there will be many people.
01:21:33Many.
01:21:35And outside the wall,
01:21:36there'll be still more.
01:21:37But I require of you
01:21:39that there are to be no incidents.
01:21:40Everything must be orderly
01:21:41and carried out to perfection.
01:21:47Tardis.
01:21:52Has she asked for me?
01:21:55No, my king.
01:21:58Tardis, if she should do so.
01:21:59If she should confess.
01:22:01If she begs for mercy.
01:22:04Even at the last minute.
01:22:07Then you understand.
01:22:08You...
01:22:09Yes.
01:22:10In that case,
01:22:11I will suspend the execution.
01:22:13Yes, you must.
01:22:15You must stop the execution.
01:22:17Promise me, Tardis.
01:22:20That you will stay with her.
01:22:21Promise me.
01:22:23I will, my king.
01:22:24Go then.
01:22:36Father, a man has just been arrested.
01:22:38He was spreading rebellion
01:22:39among the people.
01:22:40Telling a fantastic tale
01:22:41of a miracle.
01:22:42That the messiah has been born
01:22:43and a new king
01:22:44will reign in Judea.
01:22:46A new king?
01:22:49Fetch him here.
01:22:50A new king?
01:22:53Fetch him here.
01:23:05He claims that he has seen him.
01:23:14What is this you are supposed
01:23:15to have seen?
01:23:20Well...
01:23:25Him.
01:23:28We were grazing our flock
01:23:29near Bethlehem,
01:23:30I and my sons.
01:23:32Suddenly, as night
01:23:33had started to fall,
01:23:35a great star in the heavens
01:23:37illumined the valley
01:23:39where there was an old stable.
01:23:41My sons became frightened.
01:23:43But I, seeing the great multitude
01:23:44which was going
01:23:45in that direction,
01:23:46said,
01:23:47let us go too.
01:23:48As we drew near the place,
01:23:50I saw upon the faces
01:23:51of those who had arrived
01:23:52before us.
01:23:54How shall I say it?
01:23:56It was peace.
01:23:58It was joy.
01:23:59And in my heart
01:24:00I felt that same peace,
01:24:01that same joy.
01:24:04I looked into the stable
01:24:06and I saw a man
01:24:07and a woman
01:24:09and on the straw
01:24:10a little one
01:24:11who had just been born.
01:24:14And kneeling before him,
01:24:16three kings of the earth
01:24:17three kings dressed in robes
01:24:18the like of which
01:24:19I'd never seen.
01:24:21Three kings were adoring
01:24:22the newly born babe.
01:24:25I looked at my sons
01:24:27who knelt down.
01:24:29Then I knelt down too.
01:24:31I knew that I had
01:24:32begun weeping.
01:24:34The people all above me
01:24:35were saying,
01:24:36it is he,
01:24:37it is the Messiah,
01:24:39the new king of Judea.
01:24:41Hallelujah!
01:24:43Hallelujah!
01:24:44Enough!
01:24:47Ephraim,
01:24:49take your men
01:24:50go to this Bethlehem
01:24:52and kill all the new born.
01:24:53All of them!
01:24:55Shall be done.
01:25:17If you will confess your guilt
01:25:19you will be saved.
01:25:21You must decide.
01:25:47Very well,
01:25:48you must die.
01:25:51People of Jerusalem,
01:25:54you must carry out
01:25:55the sentence.
01:25:57It is the law.
01:26:01The Sanhedrin
01:26:02has condemned her
01:26:03as an adulteress.
01:26:17Carry out the sentence.
01:26:37Harriet has committed
01:26:38his most atrocious crime.
01:26:39Where is the queen?
01:26:41I wish to see her.
01:26:43Where is she?
01:26:44At the old wall?
01:26:45Don't go.
01:26:46You won't recognize her.
01:26:47Where is the queen?
01:26:49I wish to see her.
01:26:51Where is she?
01:26:52At the old wall?
01:26:53Don't go.
01:26:54You won't recognize her.
01:27:09Elia!
01:27:13Elia!
01:27:14Oh, oh, what's the matter with you?
01:27:31She was innocent.
01:27:32Innocent.
01:27:33Oh, I knew it.
01:27:36Now that she is dead.
01:27:39She was innocent.
01:27:43I thought that she was no longer mine.
01:27:47She was innocent and now she has punished me.
01:27:50Muriel!
01:27:52Father! Father!
01:27:59Antipater!
01:28:05You knew she was innocent.
01:28:07No!
01:28:09Yes.
01:28:11You knew it!
01:28:12No, father.
01:28:13It is you who have done all this.
01:28:15You serpent!
01:28:18It is you who have killed her.
01:28:20I only acted for your sake.
01:28:22For your honor.
01:28:23Against those who hated you.
01:28:25No, father.
01:28:26Why did you do it?
01:28:27Father!
01:28:28Why did you do it, you jackal?
01:28:31You jackal!
01:28:33Why did you do it?
01:28:35Die!
