TRIUMPH OF THE SON OF HERCULES
| Action, Adventure, Drama | 1961 |

Plot:
The evil Queen Tenefi, who's usurped the throne of Memphis, demands that a steady supply of young women be sacrificed to the God of Fire inside the Mountain of Thunder. Maciste intervenes and saves from this sacrifice a village's women including the beautiful Antea. Maciste then becomes involved in an effort to restore to the throne of Memphis its rightful ruler, Prince Iram. To accomplish this task Maciste travels to Memphis but is betrayed by the silk merchant, Omnes. The Queen's soldiers capture Maciste and he's forced to undergo a Trial of Strength in which two teams of horses try to pull him apart. Impressed by his beauty and strength, the Queen calls an end to the Trial and then touches Maciste with her magic scepter which erases his memories and places him under her power. A female oracle then gives Antea a dart which, when fired into Maciste, will restore him to his senses. Antea sneaks into the Queen's palace, successfully uses the dart, but falls into the hands of the Queen who orders her to be sacrificed in the Mountain of Thunder. Maciste hears of this, enters the mountain, and rescues Antea just before the mountain explodes and puts an end to the reign of Queen Tenefi.

00:01:40These men of steel could never feel
00:01:46Through the centuries in olden times there lived the sons of Hercules, heroes supreme.
00:01:54They roamed the earth righting wrongs, helping the weak and oppressed, and seeking adventure.
00:02:02One of them was Magiste. It is of his deeds we tell now.
00:02:10And of his triumph over evil.
00:02:16At the dawn of history, an evil queen usurped the throne of Memphis and forced the people to worship a false and bloodthirsty god.
00:02:24The wicked queen had young girls kidnapped from their villages and handed over to the monstrous Uri men,
00:02:32who sacrificed them to their god of fire in the temple of the Mountain of Thunder.
00:02:40This is the story of Magiste.
00:03:10The End
00:03:40The End
00:03:55I bid you welcome, noble Iran, and you too, faithful Arsinoe.
00:04:00You know who we are through your magic.
00:04:02From the time that my poor father was murdered many years ago by the cruel Agadon,
00:04:06whose niece, Tenefis, now occupies the throne of Memphis unlawfully,
00:04:10I have been living in a hiding place far up in the mountains,
00:04:12developing my skill in the use of weapons of war as I grew to manhood.
00:04:16And I pray and hope the day will soon come when I will have my revenge.
00:04:19Meanwhile, all this time our people have suffered under the yoke of tyranny,
00:04:23compelled against their will to worship a cruel and bloodthirsty god
00:04:27who insists on being satisfied every day with the sacrifice of human beings.
00:04:31For quite some time now, many omens and prophecies have led us to believe that the day of reckoning is not far off.
00:04:36Will you show us in your great wisdom the best road for us to follow?
00:04:40Nothing which occurs ever happens by chance,
00:04:43and I am not able to tell you anything except what is told to me by those who have power over me.
00:04:51Make a drop of your blood flow and fall into this magic basin,
00:04:55and I'll be able to tell you what you wish to know.
00:05:06I foresee a long and hard-fought battle, but you will overcome every difficulty
00:05:33if you have fighting at your side the powerful man who will add to the force of your weapons
00:05:38the strength of his mighty arms and of his great heart.
00:05:41Where can this man be found?
00:05:43If you know, tell me his name, and if need be, I will offer him half of my kingdom.
00:05:47No, the man who will assist you sets no price on his abilities.
00:05:51He is a warrior, and his powers are supernatural.
00:05:54He was given life by the sun, and the man's name is Machiste.
00:06:03Hold on, Machiste! Don't give in! Hold on, Machiste!
00:06:33He won! I knew he was going to win! I told you all along he was going to win! Did you see? Machiste won!
00:06:41Machiste, help us! Come to our aid! Hurry, Machiste! I beg you!
00:06:46You are the only one who can do it! We are unable to pay our tribute!
00:06:50We are poor people! We live in poverty! What can we do?
00:06:54And soldiers have been set out by Queen Tenefus!
00:06:57They're collecting all the young girls, kidnapping them from our village!
00:07:00What are we to do? Hurry and save our young girls!
00:07:04They're taking them to Memphis to be sacrificed to the God of Fire!
00:07:08I'll put a stop to this!
00:07:13Come on! Well, sirs, here you go! Follow me! Hurry!
00:07:16Help! Help! No! Let me go! Let me go! Help! Help!
00:07:37The soldiers are coming! Hurry! Hurry! Run for your lives!
00:07:42Oh! Hurry up! Come along! Hurry!
00:07:55Have mercy! Please have mercy on us! I beg you, my lord! I beg you! Have mercy on us!
00:08:01If one of you dares as much as lift a finger, your village will be razed to the ground!
00:08:06But we cannot pay our tribute, my lord! We have lost our entire harvest!
00:08:11Leave me! Get out of the way, you! Be off!
00:08:14You! Search everywhere! We cannot pay! All our crops have been destroyed!
00:08:18We have nothing left! Have pity on us!
00:08:21We'll all die of hunger, my lord! We'll die of hunger! Have mercy on us!
00:08:34Hold on there! Who are you?
00:08:37My name is Anthea. My father was the chief of the village of Milas before you soldiers murdered him along with all my people.
00:08:44It would never have happened if your people, too, had done their duty.
00:08:47And you call it a duty to submit to such cruel laws as these?
00:08:50Mind your tongue, my girl. You are very beautiful.
00:08:54And I'm not the sort of man who's likely to overlook the charms of a beautiful girl.
00:08:58I have the right to choose a woman for myself from among the group of prisoners.
00:09:02The one I choose is you. And I assure you, you'll not regret it.
00:09:05I'd prefer to be killed rather than go on living as a slave of yours.
00:09:09Why do you say that? Aren't you flattered that I've chosen you to be the favorite of Themile?
00:09:13The captain of the queen's own bodyguard?
00:09:15You! Put her with the others and tie them all together!
00:09:19Have pity, my lord! I beseech you!
00:09:22At least bear the lives of our young women.
00:09:25It's no fault of mine you refuse to pay tribute.
00:09:28Get up! On your feet!
00:09:32On your feet!
00:09:35March your horses!
00:09:38Oh, no, my lord! Please have pity on us, my most noble lord!
00:09:42Bear the lives of our women! Please!
00:09:48Come on, you women!
00:09:50Get moving there! Come along!
00:09:53Faster! Faster!
00:09:55Get up from there! Get up!
00:09:58Move faster! Move!
00:09:59Come on there, you women!
00:10:01May you be accursed for eternity!
00:10:03I hope someday you'll have to pay just once for all the tears you've brought from us!
00:10:08May you be accursed!
00:10:29Oh, no!
00:10:59You! This way! I'm going up there!
00:12:29Oh, no!
00:12:59Oh, no!
00:13:29No!
00:13:44Have mercy! Have mercy!
00:13:46Then shout to your men and tell them to surrender!
00:13:49Patrol! Throw down your weapons!
00:13:52Have mercy!
00:13:59I'm sparing you and your men so you can go back to Memphis
00:14:03and tell Queen Tenefes that you met Machiste and he defeated you.
00:14:07Go on! Run!
00:14:19Geza! Zergo!
00:14:21You will accompany these women back to the village and then join me at the camp.
00:14:29Why, you are Machiste!
00:14:31Yes, of course I am. You know me?
00:14:33Is there anyone who doesn't know you? Your name is a household word wherever people are in need of help.
00:14:37But why didn't you come to save us sooner?
00:14:39The world is wide and injustice is everywhere.
00:14:41But you can thank the gods that I came in time to save you and your friends.
00:14:44It's all right now. You can all go back to your village.
00:14:47Please let me go with you, Machiste.
00:14:49I'm all alone in the world now. I have no relatives at all in the village.
00:14:52I will be your slave for as long as I live or whatever else you wish me to be.
00:14:56What is your name?
00:14:59You know, Anthea, that we are a people without a country or a home to call our own.
00:15:03Then from now on my country will be where you are.
00:15:06We lead a hard life and one that's full of sacrifices.
00:15:09If you will only share it with me, I will face every sacrifice with joy.
00:15:13All right, then.
00:15:25What were you doing?
00:15:28Don't be so clumsy.
00:15:38My queen, Captain Thebile asks to be admitted to your presence.
00:15:42Let him enter.
00:15:59Machiste attacked us on the way, my queen.
00:16:02And no power on earth would be a match for his strength.
00:16:05There was a boulder that not even a hundred men could have budged.
00:16:08He dislodged it alone and rolled it down on top of us.
00:16:10How young is he?
00:16:12He's very young and handsome, my queen.
00:16:14He has great influence because the people follow him and love him.
00:16:19Go, Thebile.
00:16:28Go.
00:16:42Again our soldiers were put to flight by the mighty Machiste.
00:16:45And Samael, who is one of our most courageous captains, has been defeated by Machiste.
00:16:50That man is fast becoming a real menace to my government.
00:16:53As long as the god of fire gives his protection, we have nothing to fear from him.
00:16:56Machiste, mighty as he is, could never defeat the Uri men who surround and guard you.
00:17:00That's not enough.
00:17:02I want to get even with this man for the way that he is humiliating us.
00:17:05As you wish.
00:17:07And I swear by the gods that we'll bring him before you.
00:17:10And who is we?
00:17:12Do I need to remind you that I have never yet failed to keep a promise to you?
00:17:16It was I who made you absolute ruler of Memphis.
00:17:18I will give you the head of this Machiste.
00:17:21I want him here alive, and don't forget it.
00:17:24Whatever for?
00:17:26Simply putting a warrior like Machiste to death is by no means the proper solution.
00:17:30He will have to suffer first.
00:17:32And let the people come from all over the land to witness that I, Tenefis,
00:17:35can hold in chains as my prisoner the great and invincible Machiste.
00:17:39I'll give a hundred pieces of gold to who captures him.
00:17:42As you wish.
00:17:48Ladies, gather around.
00:17:51See my wares. Come and see.
00:17:54What bargain? What bargain?
00:18:01Come, ladies. Come, ladies.
00:18:04See the most beautiful stuffs in all the Orient.
00:18:07Come and look.
00:18:09Tell me if you've ever seen such silks as these.
00:18:12Softer or brighter than these.
00:18:15This color is becoming to your eyes. Just look at it.
00:18:18Feel its texture.
00:18:20Just think what your sweetheart will say when he sees you arrayed in this.
00:18:22And it's only three dinars. Three dinars.
00:18:35And Queen Tenefis, who is mistress of these lands of yours,
00:18:38always comes to me alone for the soft and supple garments
00:18:41that adorn her great beauty.
00:18:43Here. Here you are. Three dinars.
00:18:45Just a moment.
00:18:48Machiste is back! Machiste is back!
00:18:51Very well.
00:18:53Who was it they said was coming?
00:18:55Machiste. We are his people here.
00:18:58Machiste?
00:19:18Machiste!
00:19:37Machiste!
00:19:39My friend.
00:19:42There, you see. From now on, these will all be your people.
00:19:44Tama, make room for her in your tent and be her friend.
00:19:59This is the first time that Machiste has brought a woman back with him.
00:20:02I'm so grateful. He saved me from a terrible fate.
00:20:05When you're saved by Machiste, you are saved forever after.
00:20:08That's why I wanted to come with him.
00:20:10Of course.
00:20:15Is there any sign of Prince Hiram?
00:20:17No. None at all.
00:20:19The sentinels have been posted and are ready to give the signal.
00:20:22According to the message he sent us earlier,
00:20:24Prince Hiram and his men should arrive today.
00:20:26Who is that girl you brought home with you?
00:20:28Anthea.
00:20:30Why did you want to do that?
00:20:32Because I believe I read something in her eyes
00:20:34that I'd never read in any other woman's eyes in my life before.
00:20:37Machiste, aren't you coming?
00:20:39Except this one. She is my only true love.
00:20:41Put me down!
00:20:43Come and see the lamb I've cooked you.
00:20:45Just as fat and juicy a lamb.
00:20:47Just as fat and juicy as you are, Agathe.
00:20:49Come on.
00:20:51Let's eat. Let's go.
00:21:07Hey, wait!
00:21:14Keep your eyes open!
00:21:36Zay!
00:21:38Karma!
00:21:40I brought you something to eat.
00:21:44Here you are.
00:21:46Do you have to go right back, Tama?
00:21:48You're on watch here and I still have work to do.
00:21:50Oh, stay here for a minute.
00:21:53Look, they won't even realize that you aren't back there working.
00:21:56Come here.
00:22:00Go back to your post now.
00:22:02Machiste never forgives anyone who fails to do his duty.
00:22:14Prince Eron is coming!
00:22:26How can I thank you enough, Machiste?
00:22:28How could I fail to come to the help of Prince Eron?
00:22:30He is my only true love.
00:22:32He is my only true love.
00:22:34He is my only true love.
00:22:36He is my only true love.
00:22:38He is my only true love.
00:22:40He is my only true love.
00:22:41How could I fail to come to the help of Prince Eron, the son of my best friend?
00:22:45This is Arsinoe, the man to whom I owe my life.
00:22:47Welcome, Arsinoe. Let's go to my tent.
00:23:02Where are you going, Rice? This is no place for a boy.
00:23:04I'm not a boy any longer.
00:23:06But you're not a man yet. Don't you worry. Your time will come.
00:23:08Now go polish my weapons until they shine.
00:23:10You hear? Before long, I'll be needing them.
00:23:15Did you hear that? A brave heroic task for me.
00:23:18I have to polish up his old weapons.
00:23:20You can laugh, but you know I'm not allowed to marry you
00:23:23before I've performed some deed of valor by myself.
00:23:25This is the law of our tribe, you know.
00:23:27Oh, don't be impatient. I'm just as sure as you are
00:23:29that one day you'll be a hero
00:23:31and your name will be as famous in the world as Machiste's.
00:23:33That's not very likely. No one could ever equal Machiste.
00:23:36Come on, I have something to show you.
00:23:37Some marvelous new silk I bought today from Agnus. Come and see.
00:23:54It was a night of terror, believe me.
00:23:56A king, his father, butchered by traitors.
00:23:59And I, to save his son,
00:24:01pretended to be one of Agadon's most ruthless followers.
00:24:04I told him that I would kill the boy with my own hands.
00:24:07Instead, I fled with him and then had the rumor spread
00:24:10that both of us were murdered trying to escape.
00:24:12For many years I've been in hiding,
00:24:14nursing my desire for revenge and retribution.
00:24:17Now the time has come at last.
00:24:19The tribes up in the mountains are all ready to revolt and will help me.
00:24:22But there's nothing we can do if the people aren't willing to join us.
00:24:25It surely won't be simple.
00:24:27I know that in Memphis there are many people
00:24:29who wish the times were what they were,
00:24:31ready and willing to fight for justice,
00:24:33but the populace is ruled by terror.
00:24:35It's as though they were spellbound by the idol of the fire god
00:24:37and his sacrifices.
00:24:39Before they'll move, we'll have to...
00:24:42Go on, speak.
00:24:45We'll have to let the people know that you are with us,
00:24:47so they'll have confidence.
00:24:49Let them see you. Let them be sure of it.
00:24:52Is that all? Well, let me take care of that.
00:24:54I'll go to Memphis and put myself at the head of the people
00:24:57and lead them in rebellion.
00:24:59And how will you get into the city?
00:25:01The walls are heavily defended and all the gates are under guard.
00:25:03And besides, once you are inside,
00:25:05the people will put you in touch with the rebel leaders.
00:25:08Aye. I could guide the mighty Machiste.
00:25:14Well, who are you?
00:25:16I am Omnus, the silk merchant.
00:25:18You don't remember me, but I know you.
00:25:21I saw you as a child in the palace,
00:25:23and I knew your father and I knew your mother, too.
00:25:25And how did you find us here?
00:25:27I move about quite easily.
00:25:29I have to show my wares to one and all,
00:25:31rich and poor alike.
00:25:32I'm happy in the city in the hope of doing a profitable trade.
00:25:35Tell me, why are you offering to take me into the city?
00:25:38Because I also hate Agadon and Queen Tenefice.
00:25:42With their outrageous taxes, they've impoverished everyone.
00:25:45And business is bad when the people of the city are poor.
00:25:48You are acting in your own interest, then.
00:25:50You are right, my young warrior.
00:25:52Each of us has his aim.
00:25:54It will be good business for a merchant,
00:25:56power for a royal prince,
00:25:58and glory for a great hero.
00:26:00You're right.
00:26:02Why do you smuggle us inside the city?
00:26:04The guards know me readily by sight.
00:26:06I am allowed to answer for anyone journeying with me.
00:26:09And once you are inside the city walls,
00:26:11I will then put you in contact with a certain Moas,
00:26:14who knows you well, I believe, Arsinoe,
00:26:16and with Crestes and Artonis and Jannuk,
00:26:18all good citizens champing at the pit now
00:26:20and waiting for the right moment to rise in rebellion.
00:26:23How do you manage to know all this?
00:26:25Who better than a merchant can keep abreast,
00:26:27hear the news, evaluate it?
00:26:29Yesterday a phrase dropped, and today an indiscretion.
00:26:32You absorb it all,
00:26:34and you finally can read straight
00:26:36into the inmost thoughts of the speaker.
00:26:38Very well, then. I feel I can trust you.
00:26:40Prince Hiram, the soldiers of Agadon have itchy fingers,
00:26:43and I am a poor man, a very poor man.
00:26:46Well, here are 20 pieces of gold.
00:26:48Use whatever is necessary, and the rest is for you.
00:26:51Thank you, Prince Hiram.
00:26:53If we are to arrive early in Memphis,
00:26:55we must prepare to begin our journey no later than tonight.
00:26:58Agar, take him with you and give him everything that he needs.
00:27:01While I'm away from camp, Tabo will be in command here.
00:27:04Keep your weapons sharpened and be ready for a battle.
00:27:12How am I going to repay you in kind, Machiste,
00:27:14for what you are doing for us?
00:27:16By governing with benevolence and justice, Hiram.
00:27:18You have my promise.
00:27:23This is the first time I've ever been separated
00:27:26from my faithful Arsinoe.
00:27:28May it please the gods that our efforts meet with success.
00:27:31Even if it should cost me my own life.
00:27:33I'm going back to the mountains. You know where I'll be.
00:27:36If you can't come to me yourself, send someone with this ring.
00:27:39I will do exactly what your messenger tells me you want done.
00:27:43Take me with you, Machiste.
00:27:45I want to show my brother what I'm really worth.
00:27:47It's man's work, Rice.
00:27:49Your girl will have to wait for you.
00:28:02It's easier to take the trail through the mountains
00:28:05with only one horse.
00:28:32Hey, can I come out?
00:28:34Shh, the soldiers are here.
00:28:36Don't be impatient. It's too crowded.
00:28:45People of Memphis,
00:28:47our beloved Prime Minister Agadon,
00:28:49on behalf and by order of Queen Tenefis,
00:28:52offers the reward of 100 pieces of gold
00:28:55to whichever citizen is able to deliver them.
00:28:58Whoever has information as to his whereabouts
00:29:01will be granted immediate audience.
00:29:12That reward is going to complicate things.
00:29:14Such a handsome son will be tempting to more than a few.
00:29:17What do you plan to do now?
00:29:19For the moment, the best thing to do is to go to my warehouse.
00:29:21I know where I can find the gold.
00:29:23I'll be back in a minute.
00:29:27I know we'll be safe there.
00:29:58Tama!
00:29:59Rice!
00:30:02Well then, are you determined to do this?
00:30:05Yes, I'm going to make my way along the river.
00:30:07That way no one will be able to see me.
00:30:09That's where the road to Memphis begins.
00:30:11Aren't you afraid of disobeying your brother Tabor's orders
00:30:14as well as Maciste's?
00:30:15At Memphis, I'll be able to show them my true worth.
00:30:17And when Maciste sees me fighting side by side with him,
00:30:20he won't say a thing.
00:30:22I'll see you soon, Tama.
00:30:25Be careful, Rice.
00:30:27And may the gods protect you.
00:30:44You wait here.
00:30:55Did you wish to speak to me?
00:30:57Yes, great Agadon.
00:31:00Who are you?
00:31:02I'm Omnus, the silk merchant.
00:31:04Well, what do you want?
00:31:06To speak to you of Maciste.
00:31:08Since we announced the price on his head,
00:31:10five people have been here to speak to me of Maciste.
00:31:12But they were lying.
00:31:14And in place of a hundred pieces of gold,
00:31:16every one of them received a hundred pieces of gold.
00:31:18What?
00:31:19A hundred pieces of gold?
00:31:21Yes.
00:31:21And in place of a hundred pieces of gold,
00:31:23every one of them received the same number of lashes.
00:31:25I will count the money instead, Agadon,
00:31:27because I myself have already hidden Maciste inside the city.
00:31:30You'd better be telling the truth
00:31:32because otherwise I might have to double the lashes you'll get.
00:31:35Even if I were to tell you that Arsinoe and his pupil,
00:31:37Prince Hiram, whom you thought were both dead,
00:31:39are alive and well.
00:31:41You lunatic, what do you mean?
00:31:42Let go of me, you're hurting my arm.
00:31:44Speak up if you don't want to have your arm broken off.
00:31:46I swear I've seen them with my own eyes.
00:31:47Where were they?
00:31:48At a campsite. He was speaking to Maciste.
00:31:49And where is Hiram?
00:31:50I don't know, but Maciste is here. I'm ready to prove it to you.
00:31:53Let go of me.
00:31:55You've said things that are worth an entire kingdom.
00:31:57Woe to you if you've been lying.
00:31:59Hiram's alive, I tell you, and he's asked him for his assistance.
00:32:02For that reason, Maciste is in the city.
00:32:04And where is he to be found at this moment?
00:32:06Will I have my reward then?
00:32:07Certainly. Where is he?
00:32:09Auriac was a marvelous architect, you know.
00:32:11He constructed a system whereby anyone within this palace
00:32:14has a hundred ears for eavesdropping throughout the city.
00:32:16And you must often listen to what is said in the marketplace.
00:32:18How is it that you're aware of this?
00:32:20Auriac used to be fond of the bottle and confided in me.
00:32:24Pity that he happened to die so soon after finishing his work here.
00:32:27I have convinced Maciste to establish contact with the rebel leaders.
00:32:31He's seeing Moros and Crestes and Arsinoe and Jonach and others.
00:32:34All the leaders.
00:32:35But where and when?
00:32:36Give me my money first. I have earned my reward.
00:32:38You'll have it.
00:32:39In any case, if you've been lying, you won't leave here alive.
00:32:42They are in the garden now, under the statue of the god Cano.
00:32:46And it was I who suggested they hold their meeting there.
00:32:59You have Maciste's word for it.
00:33:01And by the loyalty that binds you to Prince Hiram,
00:33:04I swear to you that we will succeed in recovering the kingdom.
00:33:07We have no doubt of it, Maciste.
00:33:09Tell us what you want us to do and we shall obey you.
00:33:13Thank you, my friends.
00:33:13Now please listen very carefully to me.
00:33:15According to the plan I made with Prince Hiram,
00:33:18tomorrow morning I want all of you to assemble with your men.
00:33:23You, come this way with me.
00:33:25You close in from that side. Be quick.
00:33:44That's all, friends.
00:33:45Now everyone go back to your houses and prepare yourselves to do battle.
00:33:49Soldiers!
00:33:50That's my son. He's standing guard.
00:33:58Oh, they've killed him.
00:34:00Quick, run for your lives. Run, Arsinoe.
00:34:02Go back to Prince Hiram.
00:34:05Oh, they've killed him.
00:34:07Quick, run for your lives. Run, Arsinoe.
00:34:09Go back to Prince Hiram.
00:34:34Arsinoe!
00:35:04Arsinoe!
00:35:28Look out!
00:35:35Surrender, Maciste.
00:35:37Take him away.
00:36:04Take him away.
00:36:35Here is the prisoner you sought, my queen.
00:36:38You would never have imagined, Maciste,
00:36:40that you would ever become my prisoner.
00:36:42Of what use to you now
00:36:44are all your powers and your mighty strength.
00:36:46If I were you, Queen Tenefice,
00:36:48I wouldn't boast too soon of victory.
00:36:50You have feelings as well as brute force.
00:36:52And however proud you may be,
00:36:54at one sign from me your body would be run through
00:36:56with a hundred lances.
00:36:58But that would be a pity indeed.
00:37:00I would have you killed.
00:37:01I shall spare your life if you consent
00:37:03to serve me faithfully.
00:37:05What are you saying, my queen?
00:37:07Let us first try to make him tell us
00:37:09where we can find Prince Hiram.
00:37:11And if he refuses, we will throw him
00:37:13to the jewelry man.
00:37:15Have no fear, Agadon.
00:37:17Maciste would never consent to serve
00:37:19as oppressor of poor people,
00:37:21no matter what you do to me.
00:37:23Is that so? Nevertheless, I tell you
00:37:25that I will force you to do just what I want.
00:37:28Put him in the dungeon.
00:37:30And you, Tamayo, take care now.
00:37:32You are responsible for his safety.
00:37:36Go on. Obey your orders.
00:37:50Why, what has come over you, Tenefice?
00:37:52Why don't we have him put to torture at once?
00:37:54No.
00:37:55Why don't we have him put to torture at once?
00:37:57That will be the only way we can finally discover
00:37:59where we can hunt down and capture Prince Hiram.
00:38:02As you like.
00:38:04Go and have it announced to the populace
00:38:06that tomorrow Maciste is to be subjected
00:38:08to a trial of strength.
00:38:25Go! Go!
00:38:56Hear me, Maciste.
00:38:58There you see your companions
00:39:00buried with just their heads
00:39:02exposed above the ground.
00:39:04Chariots with sharp-bladed wheels
00:39:06are waiting only for my signal
00:39:08to tear you apart and slice off their heads.
00:39:10If you are able to restrain the horses,
00:39:12I'll grant you freedom.
00:39:14If I didn't know for sure
00:39:16that no human being could overcome
00:39:18such a force as that,
00:39:20I would say that your benevolence
00:39:22has extended too far,
00:39:24and I want to do away with you.
00:39:26This is what I have decided,
00:39:28and this shall be done.
00:39:30Now let the trial begin.
00:40:54Out of the way!
00:41:24Out of the way!
00:41:54Out of the way!
00:42:25Out of the way!
00:42:42Stop the trial!
00:42:45I declare Maciste victorious.
00:42:50What are you doing, my queen?
00:42:52This rabble is hysterical over Maciste.
00:42:54Don't be afraid, my fearful Agadon.
00:42:56Have you forgotten perhaps
00:42:58the great magic power of this scepter
00:43:00which I have inherited?
00:43:25You have won now.
00:43:27You are powerful,
00:43:29and now you will kneel in front of me.
00:43:33It is I, Tenefis the Queen,
00:43:35who orders you.
00:43:44I am Maciste.
00:43:46I am Maciste.
00:43:48I am Maciste.
00:43:50I am Maciste.
00:43:52I am Maciste.
00:43:54I am Maciste.
00:43:56I am Maciste.
00:43:58I shall be your slave.
00:44:00Order anything, and I will obey you.
00:44:25Maciste!
00:44:27Maciste!
00:44:29Maciste!
00:44:55Maciste!
00:44:57Maciste!
00:44:59Maciste!
00:45:01Maciste!
00:45:03Maciste!
00:45:05Maciste!
00:45:07Maciste!
00:45:09Maciste!
00:45:11Maciste!
00:45:13Maciste!
00:45:15Maciste!
00:45:17Maciste!
00:45:19Maciste!
00:45:21Maciste!
00:45:23Maciste!
00:45:28Wouldn't you like a sip from my goblet?
00:45:53Maciste!
00:45:55Maciste!
00:45:57Maciste!
00:45:59Maciste!
00:46:01Maciste!
00:46:03Maciste!
00:46:05Maciste!
00:46:07Maciste!
00:46:09Maciste!
00:46:11Maciste!
00:46:18Falling in love was a terrible sickness.
00:46:20And haven't you ever fallen in love?
00:46:22If I had, would I be as fat as this?
00:46:50Come along, Machispe.
00:46:58I want you to see the view of the city from my garden terrace.
00:47:01Isn't it a lovely scene?
00:47:04Look, the king is leading with Machispe.
00:47:09Yes, I see.
00:47:11The feast will continue as before.
00:47:14Dancing was excellent.
00:47:18Her indiscretion knows no boundary.
00:47:26Keep up appearances and treat her calmly.
00:47:28Machispe is not invulnerable, that's obvious.
00:47:42You see, Memphis lies at our feet.
00:47:47I know that it means very little to me.
00:47:50Ever since I first heard people speak of you,
00:47:52I've dreamt of having you here at my side, Machispe.
00:47:56Thanks to you, I'm to rule the world at last.
00:47:58No one will be more powerful than I.
00:48:00I will carry out any order you give me.
00:48:04What's left behind will soon be forgotten.
00:48:06I've already lost all memory of my past.
00:48:08My life began when I first met you.
00:48:10And would you stay at my side for the rest of your life?
00:48:12No power on earth can tear me away from you.
00:48:28Forgive me, my queen.
00:48:30The representatives of the city are waiting to take their leave of you.
00:48:33You have often before attended to these courtesies for me.
00:48:36Whenever I was sure I could control myself,
00:48:38to act as I should in your stead, but now I'm not.
00:48:41Wait for me here. I'll only be a moment.
00:49:05Come on. I've killed one of the sentinels.
00:49:07The path is open now. You must get away.
00:49:09Get away? What for?
00:49:10Machiste, we must go back to the camp at once.
00:49:13It's time for us to join with Prince Arun's men.
00:49:15But I'm on duty in the service of Queen Tenefes.
00:49:17What is this camp I'm supposed to go to?
00:49:19Why, our own.
00:49:20Machiste, you won't forget to tell my brother I helped you escape, will you?
00:49:23If you tell him, then I can marry Tama.
00:49:25I have no idea what you're talking about, young man.
00:49:28Who is your brother? And who is Tama?
00:49:30But what are you saying?
00:49:31What in the world has gotten into you?
00:49:33I am a soldier who is loyal to Queen Tenefes.
00:49:35And to her alone I owe obedience.
00:49:38Machiste.
00:49:40TENEFES
00:49:43TENEFES
00:50:06Bad news for you, Arsinoe.
00:50:08But unfortunately all too true.
00:50:10Everyone is talking about it.
00:50:11Machiste has betrayed us and sold his services to the Queen.
00:50:14I don't believe it. It's not possible.
00:50:17He's pretending. Carrying out some plan of his.
00:50:20If what you say is right, then we must be the first to do what we can for him.
00:50:23I've spoken with others.
00:50:24They are all more than ready to lay down their lives for Machiste.
00:50:27After all, he saved them from death.
00:50:29What's to be done?
00:50:30We must get word right away to Prince Iram.
00:50:32Tell him to put himself at the head of those men of his from the mountains.
00:50:35To send in full force on the city.
00:50:37The moment his men come into sight of Memphis, the people will rise in rebellion.
00:50:43And who is to get word to Prince Iram?
00:50:45I.
00:50:46Could you do it?
00:50:47If you will reveal where I'll be able to find him now.
00:50:50And if you let me have the ring too, to ensure that he believes me.
00:51:00Put it on.
00:51:07Put it on.
00:51:38Push harder.
00:51:40Push harder.
00:51:42You have to push harder still.
00:52:07Why all the gods, a trap door in the palace?
00:52:21I assure you I had no idea of its existence.
00:52:23Somebody must be trying to get rid of me.
00:52:25How could you believe such a thing?
00:52:27No one in this palace would wish you harm.
00:52:29And now I must beg you to excuse me.
00:52:31The Queen is waiting for me.
00:52:38Good news, my lord.
00:53:00Another 100 pieces of gold and you'll be in a position to do away this time with Prince Iram.
00:53:04This ring guarantees that he will do exactly what I tell him to do.
00:53:09What is your plan?
00:53:11I shall tell him he must make haste here.
00:53:13That Maciste has made arrangements for a revolt and left him out of it.
00:53:17I shall lead him into the narrow gorge of Gerum.
00:53:19There your soldiers will be lying in wait.
00:53:21And it will be an easy task for you to get the better of.
00:53:25Go quickly.
00:53:26Take one of my horses so you can get there faster.
00:53:27No.
00:53:28It's much better not to risk discovery.
00:53:30Because one of your horses would be rather conspicuous.
00:53:33Don't worry about me.
00:53:35I never fail to reach a place once I've set my mind on it.
00:53:38I'll let you make arrangements for the ambush.
00:53:40The rest will be for me to do.
00:53:42You're not stupid, Orpheus.
00:53:43Farewell.
00:53:45And don't forget now, in the gorge of Gerum.
00:54:03My profound respects, Maciste.
00:54:34Since the dawn of recorded time,
00:54:36the kings of Memphis have been handing down a secret.
00:54:39The scepter of royal power in their possession contains a magic potion
00:54:42and a thorn whereby this potion is injected.
00:54:45Whoever is smitten is bereft of his memory and of his free will
00:54:48and becomes an obedient slave entirely in their power.
00:54:52And this is what was used by Tenefus when she cast the spell over Maciste.
00:54:56Not one of the kings may ever reveal the secret to a soul.
00:54:59Otherwise the potion will lose its power and take effect no longer.
00:55:02But with Maciste, it has already taken effect.
00:55:05I can save him.
00:55:06When Maciste was born, his father entrusted him to me.
00:55:09He wanted him to be the strongest and bravest man the world has ever seen.
00:55:12I gave him my promise and I have kept that promise faithfully.
00:55:15Sit down.
00:55:22I'm giving you a potion that counteracts the power of the other one,
00:55:25but you cannot expect it to save him
00:55:27unless some person gives it to him who is willing to risk death to do it.
00:55:30I am the person who will do it.
00:55:32Tell me what's to be done.
00:55:34One look at your eyes shows your determination and love for him.
00:55:37And this too must be kept a secret by you alone
00:55:39for you are not permitted to share it.
00:55:41Otherwise the potion that I am giving you
00:55:43will be deprived completely of its effect on him.
00:55:45Do you swear?
00:55:46By the love I bear for Maciste, prophetess, I swear to you.
00:55:50There is a little pointed dart inside this hollow tube.
00:55:52That's what you use on Maciste.
00:55:54The potion will take effect instantly.
00:56:31Go on. Be off with you.
00:56:33And don't come back till you have some news worth hearing.
00:56:40Now tell me please what I can do for you, my dear young lady.
00:56:43I would like to have a word with Sir Myle, your commanding officer.
00:56:45And why do you want to speak to him?
00:56:47You're much too curious.
00:56:48All I expect you to tell him is that you have been sent by the girl from the village of Melas
00:56:52and I'm sure he'll send for me at once.
00:56:54If I were Sir Myle, I wouldn't hesitate an instant.
00:56:56Bomb.
00:57:00Accompany this young lady to Sir Myle.
00:57:02Come this way, please.
00:57:31Wait here, please.
00:57:34Which room is Maciste's? I'm afraid I've lost my way.
00:57:36Back this door.
00:58:31Here.
00:58:44Where am I?
00:58:47Open up!
00:58:59Open up!
00:59:00We can't do it.
00:59:02The Queen has given strict orders that you are not to leave your apartment.
00:59:05That's an order. Understand?
00:59:10Hold on! What are you doing?
00:59:13Stop that! Stop that!
00:59:16He's out of his mind!
00:59:22Sound the alarm!
00:59:28Sound the alarm! Stop him!
00:59:30Maciste is escaping! Stop him!
00:59:46Sound the alarm!
01:00:16Stop him! Stop him!
01:00:40Ah, there you are.
01:00:42You asked to speak with me and then you vanished.
01:00:44You've got to tell me the reason you went to the palace.
01:00:46Speak up! I want to know what you're doing here.
01:00:48I've nothing to tell you that's any concern of yours.
01:00:50It's none of your business what I'm doing here.
01:00:52Maciste has escaped! Maciste has escaped!
01:00:54I swear I'll make you talk. I know the reason why.
01:00:57Come on.
01:01:14Maciste! Maciste!
01:01:45Come on! Move, I said!
01:01:47On your knees!
01:01:49There you are, my Queen.
01:01:51This girl entered the palace on false pretenses and I found her acting suspiciously.
01:01:54She surely must know something about Maciste's escape.
01:01:58Stand up, girl. And be quick about it.
01:02:01Answer the questions that I've put to you.
01:02:04Who are you?
01:02:06I am Anthea.
01:02:08But of what importance is my name to you?
01:02:10You are incapable of understanding, Great Queen.
01:02:13All you'll ever know is hatred and trickery.
01:02:15And it was only through trickery that you could conquer Maciste.
01:02:17And I've saved him from you.
01:02:19You?
01:02:21By what means?
01:02:23What does it matter whether you know how I did it or not as long as he is where he belongs?
01:02:27It was my love that set him free.
01:02:29For me everything is over and I know you will have your revenge on me.
01:02:32You'll have me killed.
01:02:34But Maciste will always remember that I saved him from you.
01:02:36You shall die for that!
01:02:38Wait a moment, my Queen.
01:02:40What I predicted has now happened.
01:02:42Maciste has outwitted you, it seems.
01:02:44And in your eyes I now read implacable hatred for him.
01:02:48Do you want to have your full revenge on him?
01:02:50Yes.
01:02:54Well then, have her denounce that this girl is to be sacrificed to the God of Fire.
01:02:58Maciste is not the sort of man to abandon those of his friends who are most faithful to him.
01:03:02He will move the earth to save her.
01:03:04And he will walk right into our hands.
01:03:06The Yuri men will take care of him after that.
01:03:09Let the people be informed that Anthea, guilty of high treason,
01:03:12will be offered as a sacrifice tomorrow to the God of Fire.
01:03:15Thus be it written and thus be it done.
01:03:17Let me go!
01:03:18Come on!
01:03:19No!
01:03:20Go!
01:03:21No!
01:03:39Who are you?
01:03:53My beloved Prince Hiram.
01:03:55This golden ring, which is well known to you,
01:03:57has enabled me to penetrate to the very heart and center of your well-guarded hiding place.
01:04:01And it bears witness to my loyalty and good faith.
01:04:04Prince Hiram, the populace under the command of Maciste will soon rise in rebellion.
01:04:08Then why is it that you have come instead of Arsinoe in person?
01:04:11What's happened to him?
01:04:12I come and go at will in the city without arousing suspicion.
01:04:15But Arsinoe, on the other hand, must remain well hidden.
01:04:18Why take unnecessary risks?
01:04:20Someone might easily recognize him, and in that case...
01:04:22How much time will it take before your men are ready to move?
01:04:25For years I've been ready and waiting for this moment.
01:04:28The men can set out on the march right now, if that's what you wish.
01:04:31We'll join forces with Maciste.
01:04:33Maciste has already begun to move.
01:04:35I have come to inform you.
01:04:36And while doing so, I'm reporting as well the exact orders that Maciste sends you.
01:04:41Arsinoe has advised Maciste to have you approach Memphis
01:04:44by the way of the road through the gorge of Gary.
01:04:46It's the least likely to be guarded.
01:04:48It's also a shortcut to Memphis.
01:04:50Prince Hiram, I leave you now.
01:04:52I'll come to you the moment the men are mounted, and we'll leave at once.
01:04:56Well done.
01:04:58You must forgive me, Ombas.
01:05:00I'm afraid I was so anxious to hear the news you gave us
01:05:02that I quite forgot my manners.
01:05:04And that ring of mine you brought to me to serve as your credential.
01:05:07Keep it on. It's yours.
01:05:09Thank you, Prince Hiram.
01:05:25I'm sorry.
01:05:50Hiram by now is already marching on the city.
01:05:52Hiram? And who gave him the order?
01:05:54You see, it was impossible for me to go or even move, so I sent Omnus.
01:05:58Omnus.
01:06:00Wait a minute. Yes. I did see Omnus in the palace.
01:06:03He was just coming out of Agaton's room.
01:06:06He's the one who has betrayed us.
01:06:10And when I think that it was I, I who told Omnus to mark the men
01:06:13through the gorge of Garam where they're bound to walk into an ambush.
01:06:16We have a moment to lose. Come on.
01:06:19The Herald.
01:06:20People of Memphis, the prisoner Anthea,
01:06:23guilty of having freed the rebel Machiste,
01:06:25will be put to death today at sunset as an offering to the God of Fire.
01:06:34Anthea. It was Anthea who set me free.
01:06:37Come on, Arsinoe. I have to save her.
01:06:39But it's not possible.
01:06:41No one has ever gone into the stronghold of the Urimen and returned.
01:06:44We must try it. Come on.
01:06:50Let's go.
01:07:09Ride like the wind to my camp.
01:07:11Take my men and go help Iram in the gorge of Garam.
01:07:14Meanwhile, I'll go to the temple of the Fire God.
01:07:16Right.
01:07:20Let's go.
01:07:21Let's go.
01:07:22Let's go.
01:07:49Machiste, stop where you are.
01:07:51You are riding headlong toward certain death.
01:08:00Who are you who dare to stop me?
01:08:04I am she who has always protected you and wishes to save you
01:08:07now that you are riding to the Mountain of Thunder.
01:08:09Heed my words. I have always protected you.
01:08:11These arms have cradled you when you were a helpless baby.
01:08:15Yalis.
01:08:17Yes, Yalis.
01:08:18No, it's impossible.
01:08:20If to save myself I must let the one I love die,
01:08:22then I refuse to obey you.
01:08:24No, Machiste.
01:08:25Don't be afraid.
01:08:26I would never dream of suggesting such a thing to you.
01:08:29I only wanted to show you the way to avoid falling into the hands of the one who hates you.
01:08:33You can reach the temple by taking a path that I and no one else knows of.
01:08:37Go to the rapids of the river.
01:08:39Follow the stream along its course underground.
01:08:42And when you emerge above ground again,
01:08:44there thirty paces in front of you is a boulder.
01:08:46Move it aside.
01:08:47It covers an entrance to the stronghold of the monsters.
01:08:50But watch one thing.
01:08:51Avoid being clawed by the talons of the Yuri men.
01:08:54They will tear you to pieces.
01:08:56And don't forget,
01:08:57the evil power of the God of Fire
01:08:59will come to an end only in that day
01:09:01when someone makes away with one of his intended victims.
01:09:04Thank you. I shall obey.
01:09:12Farewell, Machiste.
01:09:17So, and may all the gods protect you from harm, Machiste.
01:09:47Forward, you cowards!
01:10:17Don't let him escape!
01:10:25Take that, you!
01:10:42Over here!
01:10:47Round them up!
01:10:49Don't let anybody get away!
01:10:55Let's get them, men!
01:11:01We're coming through!
01:11:17We're coming through!
01:11:47We're coming through!
01:12:17We're coming through!
01:12:19We're coming through!
01:12:46I bid you welcome, almighty queen.
01:12:50Everything is in readiness.
01:12:52We await only your order.
01:12:58No!
01:12:59No!
01:13:01No!

01:13:15Hurl her down into the stronghold of the monsters.
01:13:18Hurl her down into the stronghold of the yuri men.
01:13:49You men, come with me.
01:13:51Come on, men, you go over there.
01:13:53You men, go cover that approach.
01:13:55Don't hesitate.
01:13:56The moment he comes in sight, run him through with your spears.

01:25:02I thank you, my king. But you know it is my destiny to move on. But maybe I'll be back one day. And remember, rule with benevolence and justice.
01:25:11You have my promise.
