00:02:00I
00:02:30Ten days had passed since we had left the coast of Brazil bound for Africa
00:02:35We had reached a position of seven degrees 22 minutes north latitude when a violent hurricane pounced upon us
00:02:41For 11 days it hurled us about like some mad assassin playing cat and mouse with its victim
00:02:47We had no other course but to surrender to our fate and hope for the best
00:02:52on the twelfth day out our vessel ran aground and
00:02:56And since the salvage attempt would have been futile we abandoned it before it could be swallowed up by the sea
00:03:0211 of us took to a lifeboat, but our efforts proved to be in vain
00:03:07Shortly, we were engulfed by a gigantic wave and the boat was swamped
00:03:13It would be useless to try to relate the thoughts that flashed through my mind as I sank beneath the surface
00:03:19All I can remember is suddenly seeing a piece of broken mast floating near me
00:03:23I grabbed it and hung on for dear life had it not been for the stroke of good luck. I would have perished
00:03:53Oh
00:04:15Thank you dear lord, thank you
00:04:23Oh
00:04:53Oh
00:05:23Oh
00:05:49It is said in the Bible
00:05:51God helps him who helps himself
00:05:55And I realize that this is exactly what I must do
00:05:59But how I do not know where I am
00:06:03Whether I am on an island or some continent. I
00:06:07Did not even know whether this region is inhabited
00:06:12Although I would readily thrust this thought from my mind. I must face one stark fact
00:06:18For the first time in my life, I am utterly and completely alone and
00:06:24I am beginning to experience the overwhelming surge of anguish which comes with solitude
00:06:31My situation is hardly one to be envied and I have very little to rely upon in the way of aid
00:06:38Only my knife
00:06:42My two hands
00:06:47My
00:06:51Inseparable old pipe which my father gave me eight years ago when I left home
00:06:57the handful of wet tobacco
00:07:00Even a simpleton could see that with these meager resources. I have little if any hope of remaining alive
00:07:18Oh
00:07:36But I cannot surrender without first doing battle
00:07:39I must find a way to make a fire if I can do that. There is a good chance that it will be seen by
00:07:44some passing ship
00:07:47I
00:08:17I
00:08:47I
00:09:06First undertaking was successful. I
00:09:09Must not lose faith
00:09:11Even though I realize that my efforts may be useless since this region is probably far from established shipping lanes
00:09:17I
00:09:33But I will not give up the hope of being rescued I must cultivate the art of waiting I
00:09:40must have I
00:09:42Will have patience
00:09:47I
00:10:17Will have patience
00:10:19I
00:10:21On the dawn of my first day as a castaway I awoke with a ravenous hunger
00:10:52As
00:10:53Soon as I have found something to eat. I will spend the rest of the day exploring
00:10:58Because there is a terrible fear knowing at my heart
00:11:01The fear that this land may be inhabited by cannibals
00:11:21Oh
00:11:51Oh
00:12:21Oh
00:12:52As
00:12:54Luck would have it the region abounds in coconut palms
00:12:57For the time being these will quench my thirst or I have is yet to find fresh water as
00:13:03For food the meat of this tropical fruit will suffice me until I am able to find something more adequate to satisfy my hunger

00:23:21I
00:23:43Finally decided that the best way to leave the jungle was to take to the river. So I improvised a raft by tying some logs together
00:23:51I would feel safer once I reached the sea and the task of obtaining food would be considerably easier

00:27:21Oh
00:27:38The friendly pounding of the waves did much to calm my fears and I began to have more confidence in my chances for survival
00:27:45I knew that with a little luck I would be able to catch a couple of lobsters

00:35:57I decided to make myself a spear as a means of self-defense, as well as for hunting.

00:42:59As I gazed at the wounded deer before ending its life,
00:43:03I suddenly remembered the many times that I had been on the verge of losing mine.
00:43:08This was no real solution to my problem, so I decided to set it free,
00:43:13just as I longed to be set free from this prison without walls.
00:43:28♪♪
00:43:38♪♪
00:43:48♪♪
00:43:58♪♪
00:44:08♪♪
00:44:13I knew at once that it belonged to my ship.
00:44:16Hope was reborn when I thought of finding perhaps one of my companions,
00:44:20or at least some revisions.
00:44:22I must search everywhere. There is not a moment to lose.

00:50:46♪♪
00:50:50My ship was gone.
00:50:52I suppose I should have expected what I saw.
00:50:55But under the circumstances, I was hoping that some miracle
00:50:58would protect what was left of my precious cargo.
00:51:02Although I had lost no time in getting almost everything salvageable off her,
00:51:06I had still planned to make one more trip today to complete the task.
00:51:11However, I realize that I must consider myself fortunate
00:51:14in having retrieved the supplies that are now safely in my care.
00:51:26My prime preoccupation now is to find an adequate refuge
00:51:29from the numerous wild animals that roam the island
00:51:33and savages, if they happen to exist.
00:51:44I decided to explore further and find a place
00:51:47that would be suitable to build some sort of structure
00:51:50for my own protection, as well as for the storage
00:51:53of the treasures that I had been able to rescue from the ship.
00:51:56♪♪
00:52:13I had discovered that I was on an island with no other land in view,
00:52:17and I had come to realize that my present camping place
00:52:20would not suffice my needs.
00:52:22It was on low ground, surrounded by swamps.
00:52:26This hilltop offered me a view of the entire island,
00:52:30and it would be an ideal place as far as defense was concerned.
00:52:34On the other hand, there would be no nearby supply of drinking water,
00:52:38and I would be too far from the sea.
00:52:41This fact was of supreme importance to me,
00:52:44for I had not given up the hope that someday a ship
00:52:47would suddenly appear upon the horizon and carry me to freedom,
00:52:50deliver me from my terrible, gnawing solitude.
00:52:54♪♪

00:53:30♪♪
00:53:40♪♪
00:53:50♪♪
00:54:00♪♪
00:54:10♪♪
00:54:25I had to resort to any means available to obtain sustenance
00:54:29so as not to exhaust the meager provisions I had managed to salvage.
00:54:33I decided to construct several kinds of traps
00:54:36and set them in and around the area I had finally selected as my home.
00:54:40♪♪
00:54:50♪♪
00:55:00♪♪
00:55:10♪♪
00:55:20♪♪
00:55:30♪♪
00:55:40♪♪
00:55:48I had to kill it.
00:55:50I now know that a man can become a destructive force when he uses firearms.
00:55:56♪♪
00:56:06♪♪
00:56:14I conjured up several ideas for the type of abode that would best fit my needs.
00:56:19♪♪
00:56:29♪♪
00:56:34If I were to build a stockade around the site I had chosen as my permanent camp,
00:56:39it would offer some protection for the entrance to my cave
00:56:42where all of my too few priceless possessions were stored.
00:56:46♪♪
00:56:51It was difficult to decide whether to dig a cave,
00:56:54erect some sort of structure, or perhaps make a combination of both.
00:57:05At last I found the ideal place.
00:57:08The first thing I had to do was to explore the cave.
00:57:11♪♪
00:57:21♪♪
00:57:31♪♪
00:57:41♪♪
00:57:51♪♪
00:58:01♪♪
00:58:11♪♪
00:58:21♪♪
00:58:32♪♪
00:58:42♪♪
00:58:52♪♪
00:59:02♪♪
00:59:07♪♪
00:59:16Once my stockade was finished I devoted my time to hunting
00:59:19to increase my store of provisions.
00:59:22On numerous occasions I used myself as bait.
00:59:25It was also a sure way of ridding myself of many of the beasts
00:59:28that inhabited the island, especially those who lived near my camp.
00:59:32♪♪
00:59:42♪♪
00:59:52♪♪

01:01:22♪♪
01:01:32♪♪
01:01:42♪♪
01:01:52♪♪
01:02:02I had spent so much energy in capturing it,
01:02:05I decided not to kill it.
01:02:08♪♪
01:02:15♪♪
01:02:25♪♪
01:02:37I found a beach on the far side of the island
01:02:39and was surprised to discover that hundreds of great sea turtles
01:02:42used the beach as a breeding ground.
01:02:45Thanks to them, I solved in great part my constant problem
01:02:49of food for the tiger.
01:02:52♪♪
01:03:02♪♪
01:03:13At last we had enough food to prepare real banquets.
01:03:17♪♪
01:03:27♪♪
01:03:37♪♪
01:03:44I realized that if I really dedicated myself,
01:03:46I would eventually tame him.
01:03:48We would both lose our fear of each other
01:03:50in a very short time.
01:04:01I continued going to the beach frequented by the turtles.
01:04:04I fed the great cat turtle meat for several weeks,
01:04:07hoping that little by little we would become friends.
01:04:14♪♪
01:04:24♪♪
01:04:34♪♪
01:04:44♪♪
01:04:54♪♪
01:05:02♪♪
01:05:09Finally, I felt the time had come.
01:05:12Although I was afraid the cat might at any moment attack me,
01:05:16I decided to take it out of the trap.
01:05:19If I was going to really tame the animal,
01:05:21I had to start sooner or later.
01:05:26♪♪
01:05:40Now at last I was sure that I would succeed
01:05:43and that in a short time the great cat and I
01:05:46would be inseparable companions.
01:05:51I was cast ashore on this beach on the 30th of September
01:05:54in the year of our Lord, 1659.
01:06:02I had devised a crude calendar
01:06:05so as not to lose track of time.
01:06:07The short marks indicated the days of the weeks
01:06:10and the longer ones, Sundays.
01:06:13I used two marks to identify the first days of each month.
01:06:17Today was of special significance.
01:06:20It marked my first anniversary on the island
01:06:23and today also I had completed the work on my new home.
01:06:27♪♪
01:06:39After 365 days of scanning the horizon,
01:06:44I was suddenly overwhelmed by the sensation
01:06:47that I would never see another human being again.
01:06:51A chill ran through my body.
01:06:54I was destined to die alone, isolated from humanity.
01:06:59♪♪
01:07:21A terrifying thought invaded my mind last night.
01:07:25What if I were to fall sick in this solitude?
01:07:29Had this fear itself been the cause of my present condition?
01:07:33I would never know.
01:07:35♪♪
01:07:46Once again I implore God's help,
01:07:49but I am extremely weak.
01:07:52My mind is so befogged that in my lucid moments
01:07:56I am unable to form clear thoughts.
01:08:00Look down on me, oh Lord.
01:08:03Look down.
01:08:05Have mercy.
01:08:07Help me.
01:08:09♪♪
01:08:38♪♪
01:08:56I was relieved to discover it had only been a nightmare.
01:09:00But the vision of death had frightened me.
01:09:04The chance that the fever might return put my mind to work.
01:09:07I remembered reading somewhere that certain tribes of Indians
01:09:10used tobacco as a cure for all of their ills.
01:09:14I recall that in one of the chests I had seen two bundles of tobacco,
01:09:18one cured and the other green.
01:09:21I had no idea how it should be taken,
01:09:24so I devised two ways.
01:09:26I would chew some and mix some with rum.
01:09:30The squeals of a trapped goat had brought me from my cave.
01:09:34The catch had made it unnecessary for me to eat the rest of my small store
01:09:38of rice and cereal seeds rescued from the wreck.
01:09:42I would chew some and mix some with rum.
01:09:46The catch had made it unnecessary for me to eat the rest of my small store
01:09:50of rice and cereal seeds rescued from the wreck.
01:10:12A few minutes it took me to prepare my feast seemed like hours,
01:10:16A few minutes it took me to prepare my feast seemed like hours,
01:10:20but the delicious meat would do much to restore my strength.
01:10:32Still, I could not eat the rest of my small store of rice and cereal seeds.
01:10:36Still, I could not eat the rest of my small store of rice and cereal seeds.
01:10:40Still, I cannot forget the awful specter of death,
01:10:44which my imagination has projected against the flames.
01:10:48My first attempt at planting had been unsuccessful,
01:10:52a fact which I attributed to a lack of humidity in the soil.
01:10:56But now the ground was saturated from the recent rains,
01:11:00and I considered this the moment to risk planting the last of my seeds.
01:11:10It had been a long and hard day, and I was extremely tired,
01:11:14but I felt a sense of satisfaction at having completed the task I had set for myself.
01:11:22I had had an eerie feeling all day.
01:11:26The sky was gray and not a sound could be heard in the heavy air that hung over the island.
01:11:30I had had an eerie feeling all day.
01:11:34The sky was gray and not a sound could be heard in the heavy air that hung over the island.
01:11:38The surface of the sea was as smooth as a lake.
01:12:08Nothing happens that is not the will of God.
01:12:12He has willed that these things befall me.
01:12:16I have no one to talk to, no one to share the burden of this endless solitude.
01:12:20I have no one to talk to, no one to share the burden of this endless solitude.
01:12:24At least I did not drown with my companions.
01:12:28I am alive, and the same power that delivered me from the jaws of death
01:12:32can deliver me from this loneliness.
01:12:36Call upon me in the day of trouble, and I will deliver thee,
01:12:40and thou shalt glorify me.
01:13:06Call upon me in the day of trouble, and I will deliver thee,
01:13:10and thou shalt glorify me.
01:13:36Call upon me in the day of trouble,
01:13:40and I will deliver thee,
01:13:44and thou shalt glorify me.
01:13:48Call upon me in the day of trouble,
01:13:52and I will deliver thee,
01:13:56and thou shalt glorify me.
01:14:00Call upon me in the day of trouble,
01:14:04and I will deliver thee,
01:14:08and thou shalt glorify me.
01:14:34Call upon me in the day of trouble,
01:14:38and I will deliver thee,
01:14:42and thou shalt glorify me.
01:14:46Call upon me in the day of trouble,
01:14:50and I will deliver thee,
01:14:54and thou shalt glorify me.
01:14:58Call upon me in the day of trouble,
01:15:02and I will deliver thee,
01:15:06and thou shalt glorify me.
01:15:32My main concern was to get back to the stockade,
01:15:34since I was sure it had been totally destroyed by the earthquake.
01:15:38The End
01:15:58When I saw how much damage had been done, I felt heart sick.
01:16:02I had lost my tiger, my only friend.
01:16:08I had lost my tiger.
01:16:38The End
01:17:08The End
01:17:24For some time I had been trying my hand at making eating utensils from clay.
01:17:28Despite the different methods I had devised, they had either cracked in the sun
01:17:32or had dissolved in the water.
01:17:36My efforts were rewarded, and I found the secret.
01:18:06The End
01:18:36During the first three years, I had learned to work clay,
01:18:40weave baskets, and finally make flour.
01:18:44This was my first adventure in baking.
01:18:52This bread would be my first reward after having discovered
01:18:56how to process the grain.
01:19:06The End
01:19:14My first attempt rendered me good, sturdy bricks instead of bread.
01:19:18For the first time, I admired the skill of the bakers
01:19:22I had often watched as a young boy.
01:19:26It occurred to me that every human being is destined for a certain mission in life.
01:19:30The End
01:19:36Through my study of the Bible and constant adherence to the Word of God,
01:19:40I formed a new outlook on life by the end of my fourth year.
01:19:48The End
01:20:06I looked upon the outside world as a remote dream
01:20:10from which I expected nothing.
01:20:14I could even quote the words of Abraham,
01:20:18Between thee and me there is a great gulf fixed.
01:20:22I was separated from the evilness of my fellow man.
01:20:26I was not affected by greed, lust, nor pride,
01:20:30for since my needs were simple, I lacked nothing.
01:20:36The End
01:20:45Undoubtedly, my strange attire would have provoked laughter and ridicule
01:20:49had I been seen walking the streets of London.
01:20:53But to me, after my musket, it was my most important asset.
01:21:06The End
01:21:10The End
01:21:33Although I had had more than my share of danger, I could not contain my curiosity.
01:21:37So I set out to circle the island on foot.
01:21:49I had walked a considerable distance when my eyes fell on something
01:21:53that stopped me dead in my tracks,
01:21:57as though I had been hit by a bolt of lightning.
01:22:01The End
01:22:31The End
01:22:43I went back to make sure that it had not been my imagination.
01:22:47But no, there they were,
01:22:51human footprints clearly pressed into the sand.
01:23:01The End
01:23:31The End
01:23:39I ran with all the speed my legs could summon.
01:23:42My imagination told me that there was a man waiting in ambush behind every tree.
01:23:46Panic took complete possession of me.
01:23:50The End
01:24:01I was sure that I was being followed by a horde of enemies.
01:24:05I knew how a rabbit must feel when being chased by a pack of dogs.
01:24:09The End
01:24:39The End
01:24:43The End
01:25:06At last I was up against the most ferocious of all beasts,
01:25:10man himself.
01:25:12I would not go down without giving a good accounting of myself.
01:25:16Thank God I had built the stockade which could not be overrun easily.
01:25:20I could fire a salvo from all of my weapons in less than three minutes.
01:25:25I did not close my eyes that night and as time wore on my fear increased.
01:25:29I became dominated by terror.
01:25:31The years of isolation had taken their toll and my imagination betrayed me.
01:25:34At one time I was sure the devil himself was out there waiting.
01:25:37The suspense was agonizing. I wanted to see my enemy.
01:25:40How was it possible for another human to have reached the island?
01:25:43Where was the craft that had brought him?
01:25:45I wondered if there were other prints and could not explain how a ship could have approached the island without my having seen it.
01:25:51Surely the intruder could be no more dangerous than the devil himself.
01:25:54It was probably some savage whose canoe had been carried along by the ocean currents.
01:25:57I felt fortunate in not having been caught close to the point where he disembarked.
01:26:00Or they, because there could be several.
01:26:03That was another hair-raising thought.
01:26:05If they discover that the island is inhabited they will surely try to steal my meager possessions.
01:26:09Or even kill me.
01:26:39The sound was coming from the area where I had set my traps.
01:26:43If my enemy had been caught I would merely have to move in and finish him off.
01:26:47The sound was coming from the area where I had set my traps.
01:26:51If my enemy had been caught I would merely have to move in and finish him off.
01:27:17I gathered up my courage and left the stockade.
01:27:29I gathered up my courage and left the stockade.
01:27:33I left the stockade.
01:28:03I left the stockade.
01:28:27Man is a strange pawn of providence.
01:28:30Every day he adapts his behavior to the circumstances surrounding him.
01:28:34Today we love what we will detest tomorrow.
01:28:37Today we covet that which we will reject tomorrow.
01:28:41Today we yearn for that which we will fear in the future.
01:28:45I was a living example of such behavior.
01:28:48Although my isolation from humanity was the embodiment of my problem,
01:28:51the thought of coming in contact with another human being filled me with fear.
01:28:55I was ready to retreat the moment I laid eyes on the stranger who had set foot on my island.
01:29:25I began to believe that the footprints were my own.
01:29:55I began to believe that the footprints were my own.
01:30:25My previous theory had been thoroughly dissolved.
01:30:29I now had to face the fact that although my island was uninhabited,
01:30:33it was being visited by people from somewhere else
01:30:35or people who had been forced ashore by strong winds and currents.
01:30:38I had not seen another human being for 15 years.
01:30:42But this was not proof that no one ever set foot on the island.
01:30:46The strangers most probably came and left the island from time to time.
01:30:50I concluded that my only real danger was that of being seen.
01:30:54So I did everything I could think of to avoid being discovered.
01:31:16Never had I known such dark terror.
01:31:19Reality had reached and surpassed the wildest tricks of my imagination.
01:31:24Somehow I had never allowed myself to believe that human beings were capable of such brutal depravity.
01:31:40I was somewhat relieved when I realized that the cannibals never came to the island in search of victims.
01:31:46They always brought them with them.
01:31:49Undoubtedly, some of the savages had come exploring without finding anything of interest.
01:32:08For many days and nights I thought of nothing except how to eliminate some of the bloodthirsty monsters
01:32:12and rescue the victims they brought to the island.
01:32:15I had to attack them while they were disembarking on the island,
01:32:18one man against 20 or 30 savages who were as adept with their bows and arrows as I with my firearms.
01:32:22One of my ideas was to bury five or six pounds of gunpowder just below the spot where they built their fire.
01:32:29But I only had one keg of gunpowder and I could not be sure that the charge would go off
01:32:33when and how I planned it so as to kill several and scare the others to such an extent that they would never return.
01:32:38I disregarded the scheme and decided to set up an effective ambush in a place where I could rapidly fire all of my muskets.

01:33:11From my vantage point I could watch their every move,
01:33:14but despite the strength of my spyglass I was unable to make out if they were men or women.
01:33:19♪♪
01:33:24♪♪
01:33:29♪♪
01:33:33I thought that this was my last moment on earth.
01:33:35I could have killed two but not eight.
01:33:37With a little luck the rest would have fled but they would probably have returned with reinforcements.
01:33:42It was now evident that the cannibals were not frequent visitors to my island.
01:33:45I had waited a long time to do battle with them and now I had let them escape.
01:33:49But when I recalled the remains of those bloody orgies, the bones and half-devoured bodies,
01:33:53I became so incensed I made up my mind to wipe out the next group regardless of its size.
01:33:58My stockade was the only place where I felt safe.
01:34:01I had everything organized in such a manner that I had all I needed within the enclosure.
01:34:06Nevertheless, I did not abandon the idea of finding a way to escape from the island.

01:35:09If I could only get my hands on one of the savages canoes it would at least be a start.
01:35:14But what would become of me when I arrived to their shores?
01:35:17It would be pure folly to leave my island only to end up in their stomachs.
01:35:21But no matter how great my fear,
01:35:23my mind kept pushing to the fore the natural urge to return to civilization.
01:35:28♪♪
01:35:39With this firm resolution, I kept a constant vigil on the southwest coast.
01:35:43I was rewarded one morning when I discovered five canoes on the beach on my side of the island.

01:37:29I prayed to God that he would be able to maintain his speed until he was able to reach safety.
01:37:34But my blood ran cold when he veered from his original course and started to run directly toward me.

01:43:42The lack of the companionship of his fellow man for many years.
01:43:46Far from the conveniences of society, without hope of rescue,
01:43:51he remained undaunted.
01:43:54It is an example of what man can do without violence and without wars.
01:43:59The desire to live and create are all man really needs to come out ahead,
01:44:04regardless of his situation.
01:44:07I was happy in the knowledge that I had learned
01:44:09to value the friendship of a fellow human being,
01:44:12and that I had at last found a companion to share my joys and sorrows.
01:44:18Many years later, after their rescue,

01:44:23the one they had named Island of Despair.
