Americans in Taiwan gather in support of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris after the Democratic National Convention.
Transcript
00:00The U.S. Democratic National Convention just ended after a lively four days and
00:05now about a dozen Americans living in Taiwan have gathered to watch
00:09highlights from the event. They played speeches from Democratic presidential
00:13nominee Kamala Harris, her running mate Tim Walz and party heavyweights
00:17including former president Bill Clinton and former Democratic nominee Hillary
00:21Clinton. Now many of the attendees have not lived in the U.S. for years but they
00:26say that this year's election is of special importance to them. So you need
00:30a candidate who's looking forward, who wants to make things better and not
00:33dwell on the past, not dwell on their own petty grievances and stuff like that and
00:38so she's a forward-looking candidate. Funny over the time I've been in Taiwan
00:41it's kind of been an adverse relationship between Taiwan growing
00:44more democratic and the states I've seen a trend where it's become less
00:47democratic and if the two countries both want to grow together and have stronger
00:52relations they both need to be strong democracies and only the democracy is
00:56going to come to the help of Taiwan. I mean I think there's nothing more
01:00important this election than the future of the American democracy and the
01:04American experiment and the choice could not be more clear. There's so many issues
01:08that are important this election. I think the first and foremost is restoring
01:12abortion rights to ensure that every woman can make her own choices about her
01:17body with her doctors and not with politicians. I think second is ensuring
01:21that the American experiment and democracy is strong. The U.S. election
01:24it's it's actually have a very strong global effects around the world
01:29especially for Taiwan. The security situation in Taiwan depends on you know
01:34the U.S. has a stable system and a stable political system so actually if here we
01:41here we can contribute some effort to that end. There are over 11,000 Americans
01:47living in Taiwan and the event organizers also shared information on
01:50how to register to vote by mail. Now although this event was small they're
01:55hoping that their candidates momentum can grow at home and abroad ahead of
02:00November's elections. Justin Wu and Tiffany Wong in Taipei for Taiwan Plus.
