00:00welcome to the repair shop I'm ready to see some magic we're precious but faded
00:05keepsakes it's in a bit of a sorry state deep breaths are restored to their
00:10former glory new beginnings and new memories lovely we could do that a dream
00:16team of expert crafts people teamwork that's the fun part it's going to look
00:21absolutely stunning using traditional techniques passed down the generations
00:26someone's made it then I can fix it you're my son restore irreplaceable
00:32treasures take it away mark and unlock the stories that they hold oh my god
00:42it's like it's brand-new wizard
00:56which do you have a preference to the age of the items that you work on you
01:18prefer older or more modern well it's nicer working on the older pieces is it
01:22yeah they deserve the love they deserve bring them back arriving with the
01:27treasure in desperate need of some TLC are Helena Eve's and her daughter Leslie
01:33it's a job for jewelry expert Richard Tom hello what have you brought in for
01:43us I brought you my mother's ring Oh intrigued
01:47bit battered in parts so this was your mom's ring Helena what was your mom
01:57called Janina Janina yeah sure for short yeah sure lovely name my mother was
02:03Polish and that has come from Jewish ghetto in Warsaw Wow
02:10she wasn't Jewish 1939 my mother was 13 come home from school and her street was
02:17bombed and she saw her mum on the floor dead she was terrified where was her
02:27father he'd gone off to war World War two she never knew what happened to him
02:31really but no siblings no aunties and uncles nobody close to her at all so
02:38obviously the first place she would run to would be the church because she
02:41didn't know where else to go story she tell me was they refused her
02:45because they were full so they said we've got the convent so she went there
02:49right behind the Jewish ghetto following the invasion of Warsaw the Nazis created
02:57a ghetto sealed off from the rest of the city it's estimated over 400,000 Jews
03:03were imprisoned there and more than 80,000 lost their lives as a result of
03:09starvation and the appalling conditions inside we only recently found out that
03:15this church also hid the Jewish resistance the nuns and the Jewish
03:21resistance encouraged the orphans to take food into the ghetto and that's
03:26what she did she were taking potatoes cabbage leaves whatever the the church
03:31gave them unbelievable yeah brave woman eh yeah absolutely so one day she went
03:39with a friend who was a boy he was caught he was shot dead on the spot she
03:46escaped and she just flew I think she flew back to the to the convent and the
03:52nun said that he had she had to go because it was too much of a liability
03:56for the forer you really can't imagine this happening to a child and then she
04:01was picked up by a German truck and was taken to do forced labor on the farms in
04:08Germany but she had this ring with her yeah where did the ring come from we
04:13think the ring came from a Jewish lady in in the ghetto what she told me as a
04:18thank you she said she remembered her bending down and it came out of the hem
04:24of either her coat or a skirt or something and she just gave it to her
04:28she she loved that ring she did so even from people that have nothing they give
04:34you what they've got imagine that so your mum was in the labor camp how long
04:38was she there for 1445 was it until the end of the war and then the camp was
04:43liberated liberated and from there she went off to a displaced persons camp in
04:49Bergen-Belsen which was run by the the British Army so this is that's where she
04:56met my dad Wow does is a lovely story which goes with that because he was on
05:01duty as a guard and apparently he was talking to some German girls who were
05:05working there and she said to him what you doing talking to them girls you
05:11should be talking to me so she sounds like she was quite a strong to do what
05:22she did it you need to have a strong character she was fabulous me mum honest
05:28to God and that's where they got married the displaced people of the camp
05:31actually made her wedding dress from anything white that they could find in
05:37the camp such kindness and the headdress is made of a neck curtain how did you
05:47end up with this ring I used to wear it a lot when my mum was alive but when she
05:52died that was to make sure I had that ring even though it was warm thin and I
06:03broke it a couple of weeks later well it didn't break it just fell off what
06:07would you like me to do to it I didn't think of the ring but we've
06:11discussed it and we'd like to have it into a pendant my daughter loves
06:15necklaces and it's close to our hearts isn't it so it's a piece of our family
06:21history it represents I think for both of us just how brave courageous how
06:29resilient and and really a model for being such a strong woman it will always
06:39always stay in our hearts it will be passed down from generation to
06:43generation with the story and the history behind it leave it with me it's
06:49in safe hands I'm sure it is thank you so so much thank you thank you Elena
06:53thank you Leslie for bringing it in bye-bye
07:12I'm quite honored to have this in my hand right now Helena is really keen to
07:18have this turned into a pendant what we'll first need to do is remove the
07:23shoulders this part here on either side of the ring once they're removed I will
07:29need to just recut the scalloping then I will need to make something for a chain
07:35to pass through it's like a little loop is called a bail the stone that is in
07:40here I suspect it's an aquamarine but before I do anything I'm going to need
07:45to ascertain which metal it is and to diagnose that I am going to use a x-ray
07:52fluorescence spectrometer and this works by emitting some very harmless x-ray
08:00beams into the metal and it contains 90% silver 7.6 percent copper and it's
08:08actually finding a very very small amount of gold in there too so now I
08:13know that I'm going to be treating this ring as if it was sterling silver so I
08:17know what heats it can tolerate and how to join it now I've got a focus on
08:22turning it into a pendant
08:28next to arrive is Gordon Craig with his sons James and Ross they brought two
08:35intriguing pieces of sporting history for the attention of silversmith Brenton West
08:41hi come on in lovely to meet you I recognize these from the Olympics
08:52these were my grandfather's outdoor curling stones which were passed down to
08:56my father and are now my curling stones is dad still with us he's not I am
09:01unfortunately he took ill and that's five months since he passed and he was a
09:06very big character and a lot of fun he never took himself too seriously what
09:12was your father's name Robert Craig known as Bobby so these were his stones
09:16and they were used the grand match in 1979 was a competition held in Scotland
09:22and I think there's been 33 outdoor ones it's only when they'd have a good
09:28enough freeze on the lock so it's not every year it's only when the ice is
09:31thickened yes and they would have 300 teams from the north of Scotland play
09:36against 300 teams from the south of Scotland 300 teams yes yes so you're
09:41putting 600 2,400 people playing on one lock on a frozen lake yes yes and that's
09:50possibly why they say it may never happen again because obviously times
09:54have changed since 1979 and and health and safety and like you want to be the
09:58person said that's safe to go on yeah then after that they break it down to
10:02the club that had the best results and he was part of a curling club which is
10:08where the winners of the last grand match that there's been so currently
10:12your father he was a champion he was he was introducing himself as the reigning
10:16world outdoor curling champion because he claimed it was the world
10:20championship of curling because we invented the sport so their historical
10:24Paris yes yeah they are they put these curling stones into either of you curl
10:29yes so me and James both curl and dad curls and at a local club me and James
10:35are a wee bit more competitive James went to the World University Games how
10:40did you do so we won gold well done you know the younger brother here you have
10:44I'm just trying to follow that path as well played in the Winter Youth Olympic
10:47Games for team GB and it's just it's a big link throughout
10:54the family it's just a huge family sport how old do you think these stones
11:00are my grandfather was born 1900 there's certainly gonna be a hundred years old
11:04did he have these stones in pride of place somewhere well no they were they
11:09used to sit outside but what we should have done and didn't do over the years
11:13was take the handles off and then they don't get damaged okay because obviously
11:19you can see these are years of people standing on them or knocking about
11:23things like that okay how about the baskets the baskets I don't think
11:29they're fit to hold anything just now I'm scared dropping it on my foot if it
11:33fell through the basket it's trusting that to hold something of that weight
11:37the leather needs to be strong and the handles need to be and obviously the
11:41willow is seen better days yes yeah yeah if Brenton's able to get the stones
11:46back in shape what's the plan I'd actually like one of them each for them
11:51that's a lovely lovely lovely thought I'm just hoping I'll be able to take
11:57them on outdoor ice again they'll be really cool it's been an absolute
12:00pleasure meeting you thank you thank you thank you
12:07let me give you a hand to your bench oh it's heavy
12:21what an amazing story those guys and their curling skills are amazing and I
12:28think I shall keep my eye out for Ross and James in the future onto the stones
12:35there's quite a bit to do here the bolt is a bit long so when you come to grab
12:40it you'll hit your knuckles on the thread the whole time so what I'll do
12:44is cut a little tiny bit off of this bolt so it's flush with the top I put
12:48straighten this handle make a new wooden part for it got to polish the
12:52stones these baskets do need some remedial work I'm not a basket maker so
12:59I'm going to give the baskets to Sarah but before I do that I'm going to take
13:04the leather straps off and I can give those to Susie I'm taking care because I
13:09don't want to break them before I hand them over
13:19Richard is also faced with a delicate task transforming a ring that survived
13:25the horrors of the Second World War into a pendant what I need to do is remove
13:32these pieces of metal on the side the shoulders I've got to be incredibly
13:36careful because that ring is quite a soft stone so a very important thing to
13:41do before you start it's just score some lines all the way around a little
13:49channel so the saw blade won't wander and cause any damage to the head of the
13:53ring there we go and off that's one side done now the other and where I've
14:06cut off the two parts of the shoulder it's left a ugly and sharp piece of
14:10metal so what I need to do is very very gently file this back taking great care
14:15to mimic the scallop pattern I hope is once I've cut all that back it looked
14:21like there was never a join there at all just rolling the file around and
14:31then a little bit there it's copying that scalloped pattern
14:38Sarah I've got the curling stone baskets for you brilliant thank you I'm sure
14:46that you'll be able to do something with them I hope so they do need quite a bit
14:50of work
14:57so now I need to create the bail which is the piece that goes on top that the
15:02chain is going to run through I'm really keen to use those pieces of the shoulder
15:06they're quite an important part of what the ring was the only way I can include
15:10these in the piece is to melt them all together into a new little piece of
15:15metal make the bail from scratch
15:37so now this piece is all black from where I've melted it so I need to get
15:43that straight into a sulfuric acid salt and that will remove all of the
15:49oxidization from the outside and allow me to work on it so now all I need to do
15:54is put it through the mill for a longer squarer shape which is going to allow me
15:58to make a bail
16:13Tracy Emery is the next visitor to arrive at the bar she's hoping that
16:26woodworker will Kirk can make a cherished character whole again hi there
16:32hi you must be Tracy I am nice to meet you what's inside so it is a wooden chef
16:40but it was a wooden chef it's actually a dessert wine holder so it opens up
16:47and holds a bottle of wine but and he had a little accident he was sitting in
16:53the kitchen in under the counter light and somebody put the light on and he got
16:58a little bit burnt oh my gosh so he was a face so there's the only thing that's
17:04been kind of left intact from the top was the face which is amazing because
17:08he's the best bet so who is to blame for the fire well we don't hundred
17:13percent know but we think it was my dad because I was away for two nights and
17:19they were going over to look after my cat and he didn't like my cat being
17:22left in the dark so he turned the under counter light on and left it for the
17:27night and it was when my mum came back in the morning that they found it burn
17:33but we were very lucky it was just this and the light that got damaged I'm very
17:38lucky that it just didn't catch on anywhere else yeah I couldn't bad or
17:41they're unfortunate for me because it's one of my favorite objects yeah we're
17:45about to get the chef from and so he belonged to my grandma granddad and they
17:49used to run a pub and they bought it to sit on the food counter at the pub so
17:56that's what I remember from my childhood is spending lots of time there and
18:00talking to the wooden chef and my granddad telling me that's the chef told
18:05him what I said yeah did you believe that I did my granddad's not gonna tell
18:13me a fib what was your granddad's name Ralph Ralph and Jan did you spend a lot
18:19of time with your grandparents that's how I remember my childhood granddad
18:22would work behind the bar with my dad my mum would be in the kitchen with my
18:26gran so we've got a family pub then proper family pub on a Sunday we'd all
18:31sit around and have a lovely big family roast and we were allowed to pick
18:37whatever was left and a sweet bar so if we were lucky you would get some
18:42chocolate gato so when my granddad passed away my gran asked if there was
18:47anything we wanted and I of course said the wooden chef he just sums up my whole
18:53childhood to me and when he was sitting in my kitchen it would be like my
18:57granddad was still telling his stories to me so if I was chopping tomatoes I
19:02would hear him to say oh well what about growing tomatoes is you have to leave
19:07them alone and only pick them when they're ripe so I just remember all all
19:10of that just by him being there so really miss him I actually keep the
19:16speech that I did at his funeral inside the wooden chef so that's
19:22what's kept inside there that's lovely was that inside when this caught fire it
19:26was and it survived and it didn't catch fire really do you think your dad felt
19:31quite guilty about leaving on the lights tremendously guilty he's the one that
19:36was desperate to get it fixed for me knowing how much it meant for me and
19:42unfortunately he became poorly and passed away about a year ago so now it
19:48just has an extra meaning to get fixed because we all now have a memory of him
19:55trying his hardest to get this fixed and it was the one thing he wasn't able
19:59to do before he he passed so it's just like getting them both back together I
20:06want to do my very best to do something with it okay please that would be great
20:11try your best bring his stories back definitely nice to meet you and I'll see
20:15you soon bye bye
20:30this is in really bad condition I've never seen something so charred on my
20:36workbench I've never had to restore charcoal before and that's pretty much
20:40what this is I know that the face should sit back there that comes from
20:48the back oh my gosh okay so I'm missing lots of wood basically I'm missing a
20:55whole section from the top of the hat and some bits around the outside so I
21:00need to kind of glue back together what I do have here in a way that can really
21:04work out exactly what's missing
21:08the brass handle on this particular curling stone is bent down at an angle I
21:35need this to be straight I'm going to put a tube of steel on there this will
21:40give me lots of leverage to bend exactly where I want to bend this is brass so
21:47it's quite brittle there is a danger that this could snap it so I'm gonna be
21:53really really careful with it I think that is pretty good now that's straight
22:06I'm going to give these a bit of a clean up see what they polish up like while
22:15Brenton polishes basket weaver Sarah Hatton has started cleaning away years
22:21of dust and cobwebs from the willow baskets I've been willow weaving for
22:30about 15 years now so I had a little unusual way into willow weaving so I
22:37worked in IT so it was complete life change I thought if other people can be
22:42basket makers then so can I so I planted my own willow and became completely
22:50obsessed and I've been basket making ever since the third member of the
23:01barns curling repair team is leather expert Susie Fletcher unfortunately the
23:08old straps they're so dried out I need to replace these one of my favorite
23:12things to do is to make new stuff I'm just in the process of putting an edge
23:18crease on the brand new straps the heat of the creasing iron helps to leave a
23:25really nice clear line on the leather and this line is purely decorative but
23:31it makes a massive difference to the overall appearance of the leather so
23:37that's my lines done now I can focus on prick marking ready for the sewing in of
23:46the the buckles so that's that prick mark nicely done
23:57this stitching that I'm doing is known as stubble hand stitching and this is a
24:03very attractive stitch and although it takes longer it's a much harder wearing
24:11stitch I'm ensuring that Gordon James and Ross have this family heirloom
24:16around for another hundred years
24:23Richard's next task is to fashion a silver bail so he can attach a chain to
24:30the pendant I've milled it down and now what I need to do is to hold it in the
24:35middle and bend it into a little like pear shape so that is the start of the
24:40shape so I'm just removing the excess part of metal there with my saw and then
24:52just gonna pinch those two little bits together at the bottom so now we get
24:59that soldered together
25:02you'll just see that the bail itself starting to turn sort of cherry red so
25:12the solder there we go melts very very quickly after that point that's soldered
25:18nice the bail was a little bit rough at the moment I just need to spend a little
25:22bit of time make it look a little bit prettier and then it'll be a time to
25:25attach it to the rest of the pendant
25:44well that glue has done a great job at attaching the top of the hat to the back
25:49of the chef's head you can really see how much wood has broken away it's quite
25:55a lot there in order to fill that out I'm going to use this resin here it's a
26:01two-part resin when you mix both components together it creates a chemical
26:06reaction and it begins to harden
26:09many years ago you'd just be left with glue and sawdust to fill things which
26:27would actually take me a very long time to pack out that amount of space so as
26:32much as I use old traditional glues with certain bits of furniture I'm also very
26:36open to using modern materials too
26:45now I could pretty much fill the entire space there as one sort of solid block
26:50of resin but I'd quite like to recreate the void where a bottle could sit in the
26:56future the idea is that when the resin dries and sets I should be able to pull
27:00this back out and just be left with the empty space lie this flat this is gonna
27:06make sure that when I press this down all the excess filler it's gonna spew
27:11out the edges filling in a lot of those losses at the moment the chef looks like
27:17he's he's been on the dessert wine really he's flat on his face but we'll
27:24get him back on his feet very soon once he's completely dried I'll peel him off
27:28and if all has gone well I can do the same process with the front of him with
27:37the brasswork straight Brenton is ready to begin crafting the missing wooden part
27:42of the curling stone handle I've got some old wood from Will's scrap wood
27:48store a nice dark piece of wood and I'm gonna try and make the same shape handle
27:53as we've got here I'm just being really careful taking a little bit off at a
28:07time once I've got this parallel I've got to cut a couple of little bits in
28:15the end that fit into the sockets on the handle once I've done that I can give it
28:21a sand down and a good polish and hopefully it will match the other one
28:33I've finished cleaning this basket now I'm really happy the colors of the
28:39willow have come back out again I'm going to be going on to the handle now
28:43I'm gonna start on the lower handle because it's missing completely I am
28:51gonna get quite a large piece of willow because these handles are quite big cut
28:57the end off to a point so it goes through the weaving easier and I'm gonna
29:02put it down the side and pull it through to the inside of the basket so now what
29:11I need to do is crank the willow to get it around the handle and this is just
29:16breaking the fibers up in the willow so it becomes easier to rope it around this
29:20handle that I've made I'm gonna make sure I put enough willow on this so that
29:31I can completely fill the handle so that it's nice and strong to hold those
29:38curling stones I'm gonna finish the other three handles in the same way
29:44patch up the little holes that have been made from the woodworm and then I'm
29:49gonna hand them back over to Brenton
29:53Richard's transformation of the ring into a pendant is almost complete
30:22I've now successfully attached the bail to the rest of the ring which moves me
30:30on to this very very slight brown staining just in the corners of the
30:37scalloping it's a surface oxidization which frequently occurs in silver this
30:42has occurred over the life of the ring so if I was to remove any of those I
30:46would be doing it a disservice because it has got such a story to tell however
30:50in the middle where I removed the shoulder it was fresh metal so to make
30:56that pattern the same all the way around I'm just going to apply a sulfur based
31:02chemical that just speeds up the oxidizing process many many times it's
31:11absolutely instant this ring that is now a pendant is an indication of just how
31:18brave Geneva was to risk her life to feed others is incredibly admirable for
31:27anyone let alone a young girl it really has been a great honor to work on
31:35the ring was a treasured gift given in recognition of remarkable courage in the
31:41face of Nazi tyranny now that looks amazing extra perfect
31:51for Helena and Leslie the pendant will help preserve the memory of a much-loved
31:57mother and grandmother
32:01hello hello hi all right welcome back excited yeah extremely it's precious to
32:08me because it's my mum's yeah and she had a hard life and a hard time and I'm
32:14fortunate to have a daughter and a granddaughter so I know it'll be passed
32:18down and worn and her memory it will never be forgotten anyway but it's a
32:25story isn't it ready
32:30oh my goodness oh my gosh
32:42beautiful
32:47that's flipping good you want me to put it on for you?
32:52yeah go on
32:54oh gosh
32:57it's beautiful absolutely stunning I love it most of all because it's close
33:05to your heart isn't it? also you know the parts of the metal that were cut off
33:09yeah I've used them in the battle so all of the metal that you gave me originally
33:13is still within the ring oh all that history yeah and what would your mum
33:20make of this then? she would be absolutely over the moon it's been
33:26through a lot yeah yeah this ring yeah like my mum and many others with her you
33:32know so I'm just so proud to wear it well thank you for bringing it in thank
33:37you so so much an absolute pleasure to work with you
33:41all right take care now thank you
33:50I'm very very happy my mum went through a lot for this ring and I've got it with
33:56me all the time now we passed down the generations and the story of my brave
34:03selfless grandma will be never ever forgotten
34:10next a piece of cinematic history Sonam Batra is hoping paper conservator
34:23Angelina Bacalaru can give a prized memento the red carpet treatment
34:29there he is come on in hello how we doing? very good sir so what have you got for us?
34:34a poster. poster? let's have a look. a bit different. definitely need some attention don't it?
34:44I think so. it needs some TLC. so what was this film about because it's not really
34:48familiar with Indian cinema yeah well this is Sholay it's a film that has
34:53massively influenced my own life and millions of other people as well yeah
34:58and it's a seminal film it was ground breaking it was yeah it was like Butch
35:05Cassidy and the Sundance Kid cool you know an Indian version and these guys
35:09were great inspiration although they were convicts yeah in the movie not in
35:16the film yeah and for me like a ten-year-old watching this on the
35:22screen and you live in Leamington Spa yeah yeah the colors say all is when you
35:26actually go to India you see the sky and a sunset in that color mm-hmm that's
35:32real yeah you know and you're seeing this in multi-color thing and you think
35:39what the hell just happened there you know who are these guys yeah and you
35:43think wow so that was what Sholay did for you. so this is a link back to home
35:50basically yeah so what year was this then 1975 okay we grew up watching it
35:57and we watched it over and over again it was such a good film yeah the whole
36:02family as immigrant kids yeah we would go every Sunday instead of church we'd
36:09go to see a Bollywood film every Sunday we'd actually meet all our cousins there
36:14as well it's really just a record of the golden times when we were all we're just
36:20having a good time growing up you'd be wearing your best gear and everybody
36:26that actually went to the film felt like a superstar themselves so dressed up
36:30like one yeah yeah it wasn't just watching a film it's community coming
36:37together and catching up with people yeah and this is where I learned to
36:40speak Hindi and Punjabi I can't read or write yeah the language but I can speak
36:46it because I listen to these guys you're smiling when you talk about this
36:51film it must mean a lot to you yeah yeah I mean it's DNA it's our DNA and how come
36:56you've got this my dad passed away in 21 okay we sold the house and I found it
37:02yeah so it's something that he bought during his travels to India it would
37:08have been put up to advertise the film back in India and I mean how it survived
37:15you can see it's like it's made out of newspaper and I do believe that a lot of
37:21them would have been washed away with the rain yeah this is a very very thin
37:25paper what would you like to be done to this because really want it to be shown
37:29you know I don't know if like a linen could be on the back of it like a
37:33lining like a type of lining that I can kind of stabilize it it does say on the
37:38back it's got some handwritten writing on it that it's an original poster so
37:42it's I think it's here but yeah if something goes on the back would you
37:47want this to still be visible I think it could be covered but still seen you
38:01know this this a large area here missing and here do you have any of those
38:05missing pieces by any chance certainly I've got them oh I've got them here
38:08thank you so much yeah well listen thank you for bringing us in and telling us
38:13about this film I can't wait to see it and also see what Angie does to it yeah
38:17thank you very much bye bye
38:22I've never even seen a Bollywood film before but Sonam really sold this to me
38:36and looking at this poster the way that all the bright colors are coming through
38:40and all the action and fire and everything in the back this is really
38:45really exciting but the poor poster has seen better days these posters were not
38:51made to last and it's gonna continue degrading until I do something about it
38:55Sonam gave me a nice little folder full of little secrets there we go oh okay
39:05yeah so there's like literally poster confetti in here this looks like this is
39:14the top left corner and we also have part of the actor's head this is really
39:19good the one thing that I can't see anything that goes up here which means
39:25that I will still have to create some new pieces for all the areas that have
39:28been lost over the years but before I do anything else I want to give this a
39:33gentle surface clean with my sponge any loose dirt that is on the paper I'm just
39:42gonna pick it up with this on Will's bench the wooden chef's new body parts
39:50have now cured this is the moment of truth if this hasn't worked I've got a
39:56big problem that's amazing that's absolutely amazing it's really solid and
40:13it's done a good job at closing up the gaps there's no way that I could have
40:18pieced a bit of wood in there and carved into shape without risking causing more
40:21damage so it is really the right material for the job it's gonna need a
40:26bit of finessing just to refine the outside edge but yeah overall very happy
40:30indeed I can move on to the front of the chef I'm missing a lot of detailing I
40:36just run the neck area there so I need to build that neck up out of everything
40:40the chef's face is the most important part for Tracy so I need to make sure I
40:44get this right one of the issues here is I'm not too sure exactly how long the
40:49chef's neck needs to be so I thought I could use the back for reference I've
40:55glued on a former on the front panel here kind of like what I did with the
40:59back of the chef I put the front on here if I look down the side I can pretty
41:05much work out how high the head needs to be in relation to the back of the hat
41:25I've now got the curling baskets back from Sarah and she's done the most
41:36amazing job I'm just going to mount the straps that I've made in position on the
41:45basket and punch the holes for the strap
41:57she's gonna thread that through the buckle and there you go first one in
42:02place it looks rather gorgeous got three more to get in position and the baskets
42:09are ready to hand back to Brenton
42:23all the resin has now dried I'm now turning my attention to carving around
42:28that necktie on the front I'm just gonna slowly start skimming off layer after
42:36layer and I don't take too much to make him look like he's got a very skinny
42:40neck for quite a large chef the resin is carving away really nicely I'm gonna
42:49carry on refining this then I can give the chef a bit of a bath a very light
42:54clean and get him prepared for painting
42:58as a rejuvenated wooden chef take shape Brenton is closing in on a victory with
43:12the curling stones I cannot believe what a good job Sarah and Susie have made
43:19these baskets they look fantastic so the stones are nearly done I've got the
43:25wooden handle turned and fitted I've polished the brass and the final thing
43:31to do is just to polish these stones with a kitchen worktop polish the
43:35granite I've just got to finish polishing these and I can give them
43:45back to Gordon James and Ross I can't wait to see their faces the stones
43:50belong to Gordon's father a reigning champion curler and proud supporter of
43:55his grandson's impressive cuddling achievements
44:02nice now this is a proper team effort isn't it everyone's been on this one
44:08let's get these covered up for Gordon and James the stones are a symbol of a
44:13family sporting tradition that goes back a hundred years
44:18hi Gordon hi James how are you both feeling good yeah really excited yeah
44:24where's Ross he's in Norway he couldn't make it unfortunately it's just the two
44:30of us this time and you're both just looking right at the baking yeah I'm trying to keep eye contact but yes
44:37eyes are drawn here that's insane they look totally different honestly they
44:57were so bent out of shape and that was so smashed up and everything so how come you've
45:03taken it apart you're probably checking these work he's probably hadn't been
45:13taken apart in 50 years or something honestly thank you so much he's probably
45:18excited it's like a kid at Christmas yeah I just never ever thought they would
45:21be able to hold the curling stone in the condition in the certainly the leather
45:25wasn't before that's so cool Gordon has it filled to see these like this now
45:33it's another part of my dad the boys curl the obvious connection was curling
45:39with them and this is just something that can can go with them in that sense
45:44carry on maybe tell me to look after them and em and that's what you guys
45:50will do yep for sure no I'm really glad we don't have to carry these out they
45:54weigh a ton but thank you for bringing these in thank you so much pleasure
45:58absolute pleasure you take care now we'll do bye curling stones fixed and
46:06it's a great tribute to my father and watching my two boys curl was one of his
46:11real favorite things and it's a link between the generations I can't wait to
46:16show my brother and if the ever gets cold enough we'll definitely give them a
46:20crack on the ice
46:33Sholei poster is now washed and I have now been able to put all the little
46:38pieces that Sonam saved for me back to where they belong now I'm ready to line
46:44the poster I'm gonna use a piece of metal next to roll it up please stay it
46:52will allow me to move the poster easier so now we'll flip it and start working
46:59on its back because that's what the lining is going to go the poster is in
47:03desperate need of a lining however this is the most challenging bit because when
47:08I'm wanted to have the writing show from the back so this is the tissue that I
47:13want to use so I can see that already that I really can't see the writing here
47:19so I'll just mark with my scalpel a nice little window through the the tissue
47:26which will at least allow this to be seen
47:33I'm really happy with my little window I have one more piece of tissue to do and
47:39then I can get both pieces adhered onto the poster
47:55How you doing Angie? Hey Jay, I'm alright. Wow, you're whizzing through this, this is all patched up
48:03yes so while I have you here would you mind giving me a hand with the lining
48:08okay so the Japanese tissue is just gonna strengthen the back of this mm-hmm
48:12right yeah pick this side for me okay and I have cut a nice little window so
48:19we can see it okay we are good thank you so much Jay
48:23you've been a lifesaver take care now
48:33the lining has worked really well I'm really really happy with the way that
48:38the writing is visible and this is what Sonam really really wanted
48:50doing infills is actually one of my favorite things to do because it kind of
48:54gives back a shape to a paper that it didn't have before so I always use a
49:01piece of clear plastic and trace the shape of the infill that I want to make
49:07all I need to do is trace my shape directly with my little owl onto the
49:14paper this has to be as exact as possible I find that the really pointy
49:20bit helps create a type of indentation on my paper okay after tracing
49:30everything the paper comes apart I like tearing the paper instead of cutting it
49:37because I don't want a very clean edge the tiny fibers they will create a tiny
49:44bit of an extra connection between the infill and the poster right what do you
49:51know it's a perfect match really pleased so all I need to do is attach this back
49:58onto the paper and then just retouch it
50:16I have now started my retouching and I'm going in with some watercolors first
50:23just to see how they go Sonam did say that the sunsets in India are unique and
50:31they're gorgeous I have created a generic orange that will match to this
50:38corner of the poster and then I can slowly work on it and make the different
50:44shades that I need to this first layer seems to be going very very well but I
50:52do need to keep building up the layers to give that fire effect before this is
50:56ready for Sonam to come pick it up reds are also key to getting the wooden chef
51:03fit for the kitchen I'm hoping to freshen up his clothes and his face
51:12that's very nice once I finish this I can move on to his white hat that I can
51:19finish up with the finer details on the face which are the most important areas
51:23because that's what Tracy remembers that striking face of his
51:26Tracy's father had desperately hoped to have the wooden chef repaired but it was
51:40the one thing he was unable to do before he sadly passed away
51:43perfect yeah Tracy's gonna love that very handsome yeah but you Jay him I know you was
51:55talking about me for Tracy returning the chef to his former glory completes the
52:02task for her father and helps preserve cherished memories of her beloved
52:07granddad hello hi how you doing good thank you how you feeling excited but
52:15nervous means so much to me yeah I know what state it was in so I know what hard
52:24job you would have had trying to do anything as long as I can see his face
52:31would be amazing whatever you've done I'm gonna take him home you ready yeah
52:39I'm ready
52:51oh my god thank you so much
52:54pick him up
53:00he's beautiful he's so lovely thank you that's right that's right thank you for
53:09your hard work look how it's perfect look at his face is that the way you
53:16remember absolutely yeah absolutely is spot-on thank you so much when you're
53:22looking at him now what memories are coming back see just floating away it's
53:26just being little and being loved by my granddad so much I know what my dad will
53:37be saying he'd be looking at him going he's brilliant that's what my dad will
53:43be saying I lost the two men in my life and now I've got him back so yeah it
53:50just means everything he's so good he isn't he so where's he going back to
53:55now where you gonna take him he's gonna go in the kitchen okay but he's gonna
54:00have a shelf all to himself with no lights yeah no lights no no absolutely
54:07not thank you for fixing it morning welcome
54:10to see you again and you bye bye you take care now bye bye
54:19soon as I saw him I just felt overwhelming love and warmth from him I
54:25just remember being a child and being so loved by my family and his face just
54:34reminds me straight away of my granddad
54:40the remastered version of a beloved piece of Bollywood history is almost
54:55ready for its grand premiere I think I'm good with the NND I'm almost there it
55:02just needs a tiny bit of finessing I really hope that this transports on him
55:07back to the golden era of his life of when he met his family we're going to
55:13the cinema every Sunday and I really hope that it reminds him of all the good
55:17times that he had
55:24today Sonam has returned hopeful the poster star quality has been restored
