00:00We have a lot to cover here on the program, and we'll get right to it.
00:06But before we do anything, a tragic loss in the National Hockey League, and of course
00:11to two young men who lost their lives, NHL player Johnny Goudreau, his brother Matthew
00:17Goudreau passing away in a tragic car wreck last night.
00:22Allegedly, the individual who was behind the wheel of the other car has been charged with
00:27drunk driving and cause of death due to drunk driving.
00:30Of course, these two players, brothers, and simply put, very popular player, Matthew Goudreau
00:37in the National Hockey League, to say the least.
00:39A wedding coming up this weekend that both of them were to be involved in.
00:44Two brothers, 31 years old, 29 years old, passing away late last night, announced by
00:49the National Hockey League.
00:50The commissioner, Gary Bettman, also offering his condolences.
00:54So certainly that is not the way that we want to start the show today, but rest in
00:57peace to the Goudreau brothers.
01:00Coming up a little bit later in the show, we're going to have Vinny Ayer from Sporting
01:03News, also Simon Appelbaum from Legal Sports Report, and in addition, we'll cover the very
01:07latest going on in everything in the National Football League, and of course, college football
01:11as well, which got underway last night.
01:13We have some breaking news from the National Football League.
01:16Mike McDaniel, ahead of the 2024 NFL season, is signing a contract extension, according
01:22to Jeff Darlington, as you see there, through the 2028 NFL season.
01:26So this lines him up, obviously, with his quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, who also signed
01:30a contract extension.
01:32So Mike McDaniel's job security apparently very safe, signing a deal just before the
01:38season, which begins for the Miami Dolphins coming up next Sunday.
01:42In addition, last night, some very fun heroics from the University of Colorado, and essentially
01:48two players in that game, if we want to be specific, Schuderer Sanders and Travis Hunter.
01:53The Buffaloes got all they could handle from North Dakota State last night.
01:57In fact, they took a two-score lead late in the game.
02:00North Dakota State came back, but some uncharacteristic play calling, to say the least, at the end
02:05of the game, when it looked like Colorado could just run out the clock, started throwing
02:08the ball again.
02:09Sanders threw for over 400 yards, Hunter caught over 100 yards in receiving as well, but needless
02:16to say, the Buffaloes did not cover that game, and almost lost the game as well.
02:20Their head coach, Coach Prime, Deion Sanders, talking about the way the game ended, and
02:25seems to be pretty happy with the result.
02:27Well, I'm happy.
02:28You know, you would love, like I said, you would love to run the ball a little more,
02:31but shoot, when you got over 500 yards in total offense, I thought, I'm pretty good.
02:35I go home, I'm going to sleep good, really good, really good tonight with that.
02:39So I'm cool with that.
02:41We would like to see a little more balance, but what is balance?
02:44Balance is wins, really.
02:45That's what balance is.
02:47Nobody says nothing when you win.
02:49Well, you got to understand, we knew we had a tremendous amount of athletes that it was
02:53going to be tough covering them on the back end, and with the way Shadora, his accuracy,
02:58we know that was going to be tough on them.
02:59We just had to hold them and get stops so we could get the ball.
03:02I think they almost tripled us in time of possession in the first half, so we didn't
03:06really get the ball much, but we knew that was going to turn once we made the adjustments
03:10defensively so that we could get some stops, and that's what we did.
03:14But we knew they weren't going to lay down.
03:19We wanted to win decisively, and if we wouldn't have given up that last touchdown, it would
03:23have looked better, but we're not for looks, man.
03:26It's a W or the L. That's what you remember.
03:29You guys can pick it apart, and you ladies, I apologize, all you want, but you're here
03:34for the W or the L. Some of you got upset that we got a W, some of you, I'm really mad
03:39that we didn't get the L. So God bless you all.
03:42We have to wait again until next week.
03:44God bless you.
03:47Media actively rooting against Colorado, I don't know about that.
03:50Also for Coach Prime, who said that it didn't matter decisively, why were they throwing
03:54at the end of the game, if that's the case?
03:55I don't know.
03:56Anyway, right now, by the way, Hunter is now 25-1 to win the Heisman over on the FanDuel
04:04Sportsbook, and just keep in mind, he was 40-1, Shadur Sanders was also 40-1 going into
04:11the game last night.
04:12So both of those players, not much value that you're getting there, but needless to say,
04:15Hunter looks like an absolute star, made some incredible catches yesterday, talked after
04:18the game about he was mad that he didn't catch one.
04:22It's funny, because he got on me for not catching the one that we call the flag, because I told
04:26him to throw me the ball no matter what.
04:27So he got mad at me.
04:28He was like, I don't care, catch the ball.
04:30So that one, I just knew I had to catch the ball.
04:31I had no other choice, no other option.
04:33So whatever I had to do to get the ball, I was going to do it.
04:36Well, I mean, it was cool, but every incompletion, it hurts me inside a little bit, for sure.
04:42Besides the ones, you know, we throw away, get out of trouble, but I'm thankful, I'm
04:48excited for a win, but there's definitely situations in that game I personally couldn't
04:53handle better.
04:54There's throws, you know, I could have made, there's checkdowns I could have got to.
04:57So really the main goal tonight is just recover a little bit and watch the film and see where
05:02we got to improve.
05:04Buffalo is one of the big stories once again in college football as we head into a huge
05:08weekend, which we'll preview coming up.
05:10Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz is out at the U.S. Open.
05:13This is a stunner.
05:14Vodick van de Zandt-Skulp knocked him off.
05:17Try to say his name three times fast.
05:196-1, 7-5, 6-4, Alcaraz was a monster favorite entering into the match, but ended up losing.
05:27So it's a shocker in New York as Alcaraz is out.
05:32Meanwhile, late yesterday, the San Francisco 49ers announced that Brandon Ayuk is staying
05:37with the team.
05:38He's going to be their number two or number one wide receiver going into the season, being
05:41paid like a number one, signs a contract extension, and now will remain with the San Francisco
05:4749ers.
05:48Several reports, of course, over the last couple of months had him traded to different
05:50places like Pittsburgh and Cleveland, but needless to say, that didn't happen.
05:53He's back with San Francisco.
05:55Southeastern Conference with a groundbreaking announcement yesterday as well as we get ready
05:59for some big games this weekend in the SEC.
06:03Starting next week, you're going to see injury reports on Wednesday for every team in the
06:07Southeastern Conference.
06:08And by the way, this applies to all sports.
06:11Every week going into the weekend, the SEC are going to have injury reports just like
06:16the other leagues, including the National Football League.
06:20Last night, also in college football, Minnesota had a shot to knock off North Carolina, but
06:26their kicker came up just short.
06:28We'll talk about what happened at the end of that later.
06:30But 19-17, the final, North Carolina quarterback Max Johnson was injured in the game with a
06:36hip injury, was carted off the field.
06:39And so needless to say, Mack Brown may be looking for a backup quarterback.
06:43They got about 10 days to figure that out when North Carolina plays their next game
06:47of the season.
06:48Danny White is now the SEC's highest paid athletic director.
06:53His annual base salary is now $2.75 million with the volunteers in a deal that will run
07:00through 2030.
07:01Former NFL coach Jack Del Rio is joining Wisconsin's coaching staff with the upcoming season.
07:07He'll be a senior advisor to head coach Luke Fickle.
07:11And by the way, it all begins tomorrow morning right here on SportsGrid with College Football
07:16Today, leading you up until kickoff with Clemson and Georgia at noon, Notre Dame, Texas A&M,
07:22USC, LSU, games on Sunday and Labor Day as well.
07:26In the National Football League, Dak Prescott says that he doesn't need to have a contract
07:31extension before the season begins, but he'd like to get one eventually.
07:35They open up the season on the 8th against the Cleveland Browns.
07:38And Prescott says, well, okay, fine, if they don't want to sign me, we'll just keep going.
07:42Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is going to have his wide receiver for the first game
07:48of the season.
07:49His name is Mike Williams.
07:50Remember, he came over in the offseason from the Chargers, and it looks like he's 100%
07:55and ready to go.
07:56Joey Bosa, the great pass rusher for the Los Angeles Chargers, had hand surgery, but he's
08:01going to play in their season opener, although you're going to notice that he's wearing one
08:06of those, like, cast clubs on his arm.
08:08So he'll play for Jim Harbaugh in his first game back in the NFL.
08:12The Browns have restructured Deshaun Watson's contract, $35.832 million in cap space has
08:20been released for the Browns, so they have some more money to spend, although his number
08:24is $63 million going into the season.
08:27Highest paid quarterback in the NFL is Deshaun Watson.
08:30Last night, the Los Angeles Dodgers, well, they just keep rolling.
08:34They beat the Orioles, and Shohei Otani just keeps rolling too.
08:37He's got a new deal with Topps.
08:38He signs an exclusive autograph agreement.
08:40He already had one, but now he's got a new one, which is exclusive.
08:43You know, Topps has taken over basically everything now.
08:46They bought out Fanatics, and so that's, you know, part of the deal.
08:49As I mentioned, the Dodgers beat the Orioles yesterday, 6-3.
08:51The Phillies came back to beat the Braves, 5-4, maybe their biggest win of the season.
08:55And how about this?
08:56Lawrence Butler of the Oakland A's flying under the radar.
08:59He had his second three-home run game this season for the Oakland A's.
09:04Had a really nice season.
09:05Nobody seems to be paying attention.
09:07Welcome back to Newswire.
09:08Jim Ghazali is with us from Legal Sports Report.
09:10We've got some updates on Pennsylvania's sports betting, and also we'll touch on a
09:14little DraftKings story.
09:15And Jim, this is sort of, I guess for us, breaking news here.
09:19Simple Bet, who we have come to know over the last couple of years, is being bought
09:23out.
09:24I think that's the right way to say it.
09:25You'll correct me if I'm wrong.
09:26By DraftKings.
09:27Why did they decide to pull the trigger on this?
09:29And it's great to see you once again here on this Friday.
09:31Yeah, thanks for having me, Craig.
09:34We found out a few days ago that DraftKings will be acquiring Simple Bet, the in-game
09:41live betting specialist that has already had several deals with some popular sportsbooks
09:49in the U.S.
09:50Analysts believe that this deal is worth up to $195 million.
09:58DraftKings has been a partner with Simple Bet since August of 2021.
10:03And they've been supplying the live in-game betting technology behind the DraftKings app,
10:11as well as a handful of other sportsbooks across the U.S.
10:16So what does this mean for you?
10:19The better, it means most likely DraftKings will be able to offer more live betting markets.
10:27Those live betting markets will be updated and available a lot quicker, a lot faster
10:34as you're looking to place your live in-game wagers.
10:38Now, like I did mention, Bet365, Caesars, ESPN Bet, they all have deals with Simple Bet
10:46as well for this technology, you know, powering those live in-game markets on those apps.
10:54It's not exactly clear what, if any, changes will be coming for those competing sportsbooks
11:02and their deal with Simple Bet.
11:04And as we know too, Craig, the live betting markets have grown exponentially over the
11:12last couple of years.
11:12There was a report from SportRadar a handful of months ago saying that the live betting
11:20market in the U.S. accounts for about 35 to 40 percent of overall handle in America.
11:29Now, compare that to the U.K., where live betting dominates.
11:34It's upwards of 70 percent of handle in the U.K., but the U.S. live betting market is
11:41certainly growing.
11:43This was a move by DraftKings to acquire one of the top, if not the top, live technology,
11:51live in-game betting technology providers in Simple Bet.
11:54So we'll see what this means ahead of the NFL betting season, but, you know, a big deal,
12:01upwards of $195 million, according to analysts, right on the horizon of the NFL season, Craig.
12:08Yeah, no, I definitely think it's, you know, certainly interesting because, again, some
12:12of these companies have come along only to be bought out, and this is another one with
12:16Simple Bet.
12:17All right, so the state of Pennsylvania is a very popular sports betting state, probably
12:21top five, I would say, based in the U.S. as far as revenue is concerned.
12:25And partially, I guess, Jim, the reason to be attributed to that, and I guess it is working,
12:29is all the promotional dollars that the sportsbooks are spending.
12:33And boy, when I looked at the number here over at Legal Sports Report, it sure seems
12:37like a pretty high one to get the revenue going, isn't it?
12:40Yeah, and you're absolutely right, Craig.
12:42Pennsylvania is one of the larger U.S. sports betting markets, and what struck me in their
12:49July report was just how much, collectively, the online sportsbooks spent on promotions,
12:57free bets, bonus bets, odd boosts, you know, that seems to go by a variety of different
13:02names these days.
13:03But they spent $14.2 million on free bets in July, which was nearly double from July
13:12of last year.
13:13And I thought that was interesting because typically, like we've talked about over the
13:16last couple of weeks and months, Craig, we typically see a lull in sports betting overall
13:22across the country in June and July.
13:25The sports betting events, if you will, are not as prominent as they are when we get into
13:32the fall when you have NFL, NHL, NBA coming back.
13:38So it was a bit surprising to see that the promotional spending was as high as it was.
13:46FanDuel, $5.7 million in free bets.
13:49DraftKings, $2.3 million.
13:52Bet365, just shy of $2 million.
13:55And, you know, I can see it for Bet365.
13:58They just launched in the Pennsylvania market not that long ago.
14:02So they're still in that sort of growth phase there and trying to acquire customers.
14:08So I can see them spending.
14:11It did only account for $3.5 million of total handle for the month in July, which landed
14:18at $414.7 million.
14:21Handle was up over 20%.
14:24Revenue was up over 34% year over year in Pennsylvania.
14:28So as we're seeing across the country in a lot of markets, just the overall growth is
14:34there.
14:34Just that promotional spending just kind of jumped off the page at me.
14:39Perhaps they're trying to get a jump on the customer acquisition for the NFL season,
14:43Craig.
14:44Yeah, no, it definitely feels like that's the case.
14:46And it does make sense.
14:47Again, I still believe in the end they're going to be fine as far as the money that
14:51they make.
14:51I know that some of them still claim they're not profitable, but hard to believe that's
14:55the case in a couple of years.
14:56All right.
14:56So if you live in Louisiana, you probably are betting on a parlay if you're a sports
15:01better, because my gosh, these numbers are incredible.
15:04You can read, by the way, check out Jim over on social media at Jim Ghazali on X.
15:09I mean, is this accurate?
15:10Like more than half the people who are betting in Louisiana are just doing parlays or at
15:14least being part of parlay bets?
15:16Seems crazy to me.
15:18Yeah, the figures are rather large in terms of parlay betting in Louisiana, and it just
15:24seems another month, another conversation about it with you, Craig, because it continues
15:30to blow me away just how profitable these parlays are for the sports books, especially
15:37in Louisiana.
15:39Sixty five percent of total revenue in July in Louisiana came from parlays.
15:46Twenty two and a half million dollars won collectively by the sports books across all
15:52sports in Louisiana.
15:54Nearly 15 million dollars of that was from parlays.
15:57So they're picking up right where they left off at the end of the last fiscal year, which
16:02ended in June, where through that whole prior 12 months, 70 percent of overall online sports
16:10betting revenue came from parlays.
16:14And it makes sense for for both the player and the sports book.
16:20And what I mean by that is we've just seen how like we're talking about the live betting
16:25a few moments ago, Craig.
16:26We've seen how parlays have grown and become really the one of the most popular betting
16:34options really across the entire landscape.
16:38The number of people betting parlays, the number of parlays being bet, the number of
16:42dollars being bet on parlays, these, you know, bet a little to win a lot is very enticing.
16:48So we've seen a lot of handle get pumped into these types of bets for the sports books.
16:54They've obviously recognized that and they've invested heavily in the parlay technology.
17:01They bill it as better pricing, better pricing on their end so they can drive more revenue
17:07from them.
17:08But the betters continue to to try their hand at these lottery style ticket wagers.
17:15And at least where we can see in certain states where they break figures, we can see in
17:21Louisiana it hasn't worked out all that well for the better.
17:25But in turn has worked out quite well for the sports books.
17:29Like I mentioned, 65 percent of market wide revenue coming from parlay betting in Louisiana
17:36in July.
17:37Craig.
17:38All right.
17:38Well, Jim, have a good weekend.
17:40Have a good Labor Day weekend.
17:41Stay away from the horses this weekend.
17:43Move yourself over to a little college football.
17:45All right.
17:45We've got a lot of games going on this weekend.
17:47You can do it.
17:48All right.
17:48Do it this weekend.
17:50I'll try.
17:51I'll try.
17:51Thanks, Craig.
