00:00Hi, welcome back to my channel.
00:02In this video, I will explain the ending of The Peasants.
00:04So, let's begin.
00:06Based on the Nobel Prize-winning novel by Wladyslaw Raymond, The Peasants tells the
00:09tragic story of a peasant girl named Jagna forced to marry a much older, wealthy farmer
00:14Barina, despite her love for his son Antek.
00:17With time, Jagna becomes the object of envy and hate with the villagers and she must fight
00:21to preserve her independence.
00:24Set in the Polish countryside on the cusp of the 19th and 20th centuries, the story's
00:28dramatic turns tie into the changing seasons, hard labor in the fields, and the traditional
00:32local holidays, here is everything you need to know about the ending, just to let you
00:35know this video will contain spoilers.
00:38The Peasants is a keen observer of the lives of the farming community in a small Polish
00:42village, Lips.
00:44Nearing the end of the 19th century, Lips, being detached from the rest of the world,
00:48is content with the way things have been going.
00:50The whole village being a breeding ground for bitter gossip doesn't make life easy
00:54for Jagna, a 19-year-old girl of ethereal beauty.
00:57A freethinker and a dreamer, Jagna is detached from the things of pragmatic importance in
01:01the village, crops, lands, and dowry.
01:05It's of all the more pain to her that her mother wishes to trade her for the ownership
01:08of Lips' wealthiest widower's lands.
01:11She's far from the master of her own fate, and she can only do so much about all the
01:14terrible turns her life decides to take.
01:17What Causes a Rift Between Barina and Antek?
01:21Jagna's often in denial about her inevitable fate.
01:24As she loses herself in the fields of dandelions and spends her days taking care of animals
01:28and making beautiful paper cutouts, she forgets that she'd have to leave her mother's home
01:32someday.
01:33Men all around the village are already lining up with vodka, the way Lips' men propose
01:37to the women they fancy.
01:39Maybe it's the fact that Antek is married and wouldn't want to tie her down that
01:42draws Jagna even closer to him.
01:44Trouble is, Antek's father has been talked into marrying Jagna, a proposal her mother
01:48practically forces her to accept.
01:51Barina may be old, and his children are far older than Jagna, but he's also the richest
01:55and most influential farmer in the village.
01:58It's not that Barina doesn't know about Jagna and Antek's love, but the wish to marry someone
02:02so young and beautiful makes him blind to everything else around him.
02:06Antek's a shell of a man now.
02:08But it's not just because the girl he's so smitten with is about to become his stepmother.
02:12Barina holds onto his lands like he'd lose himself if he passed them down to his children.
02:17And no amount of backbending work from Antek or the snide remarks from Blacksmith, his
02:21son-in-law, could change his mind about dividing up his land among his children.
02:25So when this man, who's so proud of his legacy as a farmer that he wouldn't even
02:29acknowledge his own children's claim on his lands, hands over the best acres to Jagna,
02:33Antek's fury knows no bounds.
02:35With a broken heart and a bruised ego, Antek loses his home and is sent away with his wife
02:39and children.
02:41Does Jagna move on from Antek?
02:43It's not just that the marriage clips her wings, but now that she's wife to the chief
02:47farmer, the villager's jealousy grows tenfold.
02:50She's met with frowns and judgment everywhere she goes, and even as she tries her best to
02:54be a devoted wife, her heart can hardly deny those passionate escapades whenever Antek
02:58is around.
02:59They're caught a few times, and the gossip spreads like wildfire in the village.
03:04It takes Barina a while to realize that Jagna will never belong to him.
03:08It's not just that he cheats on Henka so blatantly that makes Antek an awful husband.
03:13It's also his boneheaded pride.
03:15In his arrogance to never bend before his father, he doesn't even allow a starving
03:19Henka and their children to take food and supplies from him.
03:22Jagna isn't naive.
03:24She continues to be involved with Antek, knowing how he's hurting his family, given that the
03:28time they spend together is the only time she feels alive.
03:32But eventually, she does recognize the signs that tell her that Antek's not so different
03:36from the men who want her, but not out of love.
03:39The growing distance, his lack of concern over how their meetings subject Jagna to the
03:42villager's bullying, and the time that his anger takes an abusive form, all of it gives
03:46Jagna the much-needed clarity about Antek.
03:49Does Barina forgive Antek?
03:52Contrary to the idea all that hateful gossiping and pettiness gives you, the People of Lips
03:55come together against threats from outsiders.
03:59Their lands and the cattle are all they have.
04:02So they're justifiably furious at the idea of the squire selling off the woods that belong
04:06to the farmers, too.
04:08While it was easier to shelf the revolt for another day when it was just words, the threat
04:11took an undeniably menacing form when workers actually started chopping down the trees.
04:17Barina isn't a perfect man.
04:19But he's brave enough to lead an armed revolt against the rich, taking what's theirs.
04:23Antek was rather late to the party.
04:26And the fire of vengeance was almost about to get the better of him when he considered
04:29taking advantage of the mayhem and killing his father.
04:32But when it came to it, he couldn't tolerate Barina's torment in the hands of a guard and
04:36saved his life at the cost of his imprisonment.
04:39Barina might not have explicitly forgiven Antek.
04:42The two hardly even shared a word before the old farmer's death.
04:46But the fact that Barina handed over the management of the farm to Henka was proof enough that
04:50he was grateful to have them around.
04:52Why does Jagna get exiled from the village?
04:55The idea of the peasants is neither to demonize the simple, hardworking People of Lips nor
04:59to dismiss their wrongs.
05:01It simply observes this specific terrarium and leaves it up to you to ponder over how
05:05things work in a community such as this one.
05:07A village full of God-fearing people who haven't been exposed to more liberal ways of life
05:11can only be expected to have their ways rooted in patriarchy.
05:15In a place like that, Jagna's beauty was her biggest curse.
05:19The women who envied her were already prone to blaming a woman for the advances men make
05:22at her.
05:23And the amount of wealth that fell into Jagna's lap when she married Barina only served to
05:27aggravate that jealousy.
05:29Jagna didn't want a man, let alone a village full of them.
05:33Even when Mayor Pyotr promised to bail Antek out, only to get her drunk and force himself
05:37on her, Jagna was the one to be attacked by the vile accusations all around the village.
05:42Jagna was never one to give her individuality up to please people around her or to get them
05:45to stop vilifying her.
05:47Even though the marriage was never a good one, things only got worse for Jagna when
05:51Barina was nearing his death.
05:53For a man who'd given his life to the land and even chased off his own kin to have control
05:57over his life's work, dying in his own field was what Barina would've wanted.
06:01He wanted to keep his lands for himself as long as there was breath left in his body,
06:05and when his time came, he became one with the dirt.
06:08In a better world, Barina's death would've liberated Jagna.
06:11But it only made it all the more convenient for the villagers to come at her with all
06:15that pent-up rage and jealousy.
06:17Henka's hostility toward Jagna, while born out of the pain of her husband destroying
06:21their family over his obsession with another woman, was not entirely justified.
06:25As Jagna herself pointed out before handing over all of Barina's lands to Henka in a fit
06:29of rage, it took two to break that family.
06:32Antek didn't have to follow Jagna around despite his wife's ardent pleas.
06:36But the Anteks, especially in a setting like Lips, never take their part of the blame.
06:41Jagna could've taken the easy way out and married Mateusz when he proposed.
06:45But even though he was kinder and much more loving than the rest, Jagna saw no point in
06:49binding herself to yet another man.
06:51The peasant's ending is witness to a disturbing witch-hunt, which was a long way coming.
06:56For someone who'd offended the women of the village with her beauty and the men with her
06:59rejection, Jagna didn't have anyone advocating for her when they made up their minds about
07:03kicking her out.
07:05Even Antek, the man who claimed to love her, chose to secure his position as the chief
07:09farmer after Barina's death and left Jagna to be torn apart by the vicious mob.
07:13Jagna didn't have a say in the matter.
07:16She knew what was coming when simply talking to Jezio got his mother enraged.
07:20They'd pin the misfortunes of Lips on the village Jezebel, branding Jagna as the seductress
07:24God is punishing the village for.
07:27As she's stripped, molested, and thrown in the dirt on the edge of the village, Jagna
07:30has as little control over her condition as she's always had.
07:34When they throw dirt on her, I wonder if Jagna looks back to the day when Antek scooped up
07:38a handful of dirt and told her that's what she was to him.
07:41Considering how he turned his back on her in her most dire state, I wonder if Antek
07:45meant what he said when he corrected her, Jagna isn't dirt but the holy soil that brings
07:49life.
07:50That's all for now folks.
07:51I would appreciate it if you could give the video a super thanks with a thumbs up and
07:54subscribe to the channel so you can see more content like this every day.
07:57Take care.
07:58Bye!
