00:00Hi, welcome back to my channel. In this video, I will explain the ending of Stromboli. So,

00:05let's begin.

00:06Netflix's Stromboli follows Sarah, a 40-year-old divorcee wandering the streets of the titular

00:11volcanic island in a drunken, depressed stupor. Finding a way to recreate the happiness lost

00:15and also a way out of her misery, here is everything you need to know about the ending.

00:19Just to let you know this video will contain spoilers.

00:22Sarah is a middle-aged divorced woman who's traveling to Stromboli, the Italian volcanic

00:27island, in order to recreate the days of happiness she experienced when she used to

00:31have visited it earlier with her family. She's fast and loose with booze and sex, and drinking

00:36a bit too much leads her to meet a millionaire old man, Harold, who keeps her company while

00:40she gets high, later she ruins the Airbnb she was staying at, resulting in her getting

00:44evicted by the old owner named Pietro. She keeps apologizing to her 14-year-old daughter

00:49in texts but doesn't get a response back. Later, she loses her bag that also had her

00:54phone in it. With no place to stay, she takes a short refuge in a local church. When she

01:00wakes up, she's met by a pale blonde-haired Jens, who takes her with him to a retreat

01:04called From Fear to Love. There, she meets Harold and other people who carry traumas

01:09and pain as she does. The program begins and the offbeat exercises to open up participants

01:14to dig deep and engage with their past seem to work on Sarah, who soon grows cold feet

01:19and decides to bail. However, Jens manages to convince her to stay in the program. During

01:24the following days, there are many exercises and bonding sessions between the people who

01:28all open up to each other and as sparks fly between Sarah and Hans, the two have sex,

01:33which is ended abruptly by Hans, who's visibly made suddenly uneasy by something. Later on,

01:39Jens manages to unearth what traumas plague Sarah, as well as Hans. While she has been

01:43struggling to contend with the traumatic memories she's been repressing all this time, Sarah

01:47finally gives in to the program and through unconventional exercises, she confronts her

01:52trauma. She decides to open up to her daughter about her past and calls her, with her daughter

01:56finally responding to her with some semblance of cordiality. Stromboli ends with a retreat

02:01of participants all departing from the island, including Harold, who Sarah asks to visit

02:06sometime before she looks onto the sea and is embraced by Hans.

02:10What happened to Sarah in her past?

02:13Sarah was raped when she was a teenager, just about as old as her daughter is right now.

02:17She got incredibly inebriated at a party one night and the rapist took advantage of

02:21her helpless state. While she threw up outside the party, he snuck up on her and after consoling

02:26her, he forced himself on her. What transpired next scarred Sarah for the rest of her life.

02:32One of the worst impacts of said event was that she could never talk to anyone about

02:35it. And while she kept it all to herself, the trauma grew and festered to a stage where

02:40all she holds dear starts shattering. As a result, her relationship with her husband

02:44ends, and her relationship with her daughter sours to the point that she now hates her

02:48mother.

02:50Why is Sarah divorced?

02:52Sarah suffers from a trauma that stemmed from her rape in her adolescence, and she never

02:56found it in herself to open up to others about it. She didn't tell her parents about it,

03:01nor did her husband and daughter. Midway through Stromboli and all throughout the runtime in

03:05short glimpses, her strenuous relationship with her husband is shown. She used to have

03:10a happy relationship with him but as a result of her repressing all her trauma within herself,

03:14their intimacy begins vanishing.

03:17The understandably non-reciprocal involvement from Sarah's side whenever her husband wanted

03:21to have sex, gave birth to tensions among them and he grew frustrated. On top of that,

03:26Sarah would not open up to him which gnawed at him even more. Ultimately, their relationship

03:31would become highly dysfunctional and the two would divorce.

03:34Why does Sarah's daughter hate her?

03:37At Sophie's 14th birthday party, Sarah stormed in and pulled her daughter away from the teenage

03:41boy whose lap she was sitting on. Following that, she throws the boy out of the house,

03:46much to Sophie's dismay, protest, and embarrassment. Ever since that, Sophie hates her mother intensely.

03:53She doesn't know the context behind Sarah's actions which were essentially her effort

03:56at protecting her daughter from the same kind of trauma that she went through.

04:01Sarah tries apologizing to Sophie multiple times during her vacation at Stromboli but

04:05Sophie would have none of it, until the last day of Sarah's retreat when she finally talks

04:09to her mother and tells her that she ruined her birthday. At end of Stromboli, she remains

04:13upset at her mother. She seems ready and willing to see her mother again and hear from her

04:17about the terrible pain she harbors, a far cry from the time she lashed out at her mother

04:22and told her she hopes she dies.
