00:00As the Transport Minister, ensuring road safety is one of my highest priorities.
00:05I am fully committed to supporting every possible measures to reduce the tragic loss of life
00:11caused by road traffic crashes.
00:14According to the statistics by Royal Malaysian Police, road traffic fatalities totaled 6,443
00:22in 2023.
00:24This underscores the urgent need for renewed and intensified efforts to address road safety
00:31challenges.
00:32We must act decisively to halt this rise and work towards achieving safer roads for all.
00:40The Malaysian Government has established a Cabinet Committee on Road Safety and Traffic
00:45Congestion, chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister.
00:50This shows the seriousness of the Government to tackle this issue and problems.
00:55This newly formed committee will meet regularly, allowing us to consistently develop, review
01:01and refine our strategies.
01:04This approach demonstrates the Government's commitment to reducing road traffic fatalities
01:08and enhancing everyone's safety on our roads.
01:12To raise awareness about the serious number of road accident deaths, Police, with guidance
01:18from the Cabinet Committee, have since March this year, released road accident death statistics
01:24on a daily basis.
01:26This initiative seeks to emulate the Ministry of Health's approach during the COVID-19
01:31pandemic when daily reporting of infection numbers helped raise public awareness of the
01:36disease.
01:37In fact, we have always mentioned, the road death fatalities are even higher than COVID.
01:44That is why it is very important that we must raise concern and the attention of the public
01:51towards road safety.
01:53Malaysia's Road Safety Plan 2022-2030 seeks to significantly reduce the numbers of road
02:00traffic fatalities.
02:02To achieve this challenging goal, the Plan outlines 10 priority areas that address various
02:07road safety issues.
02:09The first 3-year Action Plan, from 2022-2024, focuses on establishing governance platforms
02:17and mechanisms for effectively monitoring and evaluating road safety interventions across
02:23these 10 areas.
02:25As we near the end of this first Action Plan, it is time to review our progress, refine
02:31our strategies and prepare for the next 3-year Plan to reduce road traffic fatalities.
