JP posits that we still haven't seen what this defense is capable of because Jon Allen, Daron Payne, and Bobby Wagner did not see a snap in the preseason.
Transcript
00:00We haven't seen John Allen, Deron Payne,
00:04or Bobby Wagner on the field for this defense yet.
00:07I think those three men can make a tremendous difference.
00:14I think those, I think two of those three men
00:18are going to have to play a certain level
00:20if we are going to get better play
00:22out of those guys that you're concerned about.
00:24Because I think it's very easy to blame the secondary
00:27when you're not getting pressure up front.
00:30If they get some pressure up front,
00:31I guarantee you the secondary will look better
00:33than what they are.
00:34I'm not saying that they're good.
00:35But the consistent pressure up front for years.
00:39It's football one-on-one.
00:40For the last four or five years,
00:42all we talk about is off the edges.
00:44You know where you can do it at?
00:46There's a guy who we consider the best in football,
00:48he retired, number 99, Aaron Donald, right?
00:51Where does he come from?
00:52Inside.
00:53And I guarantee he gets as much pressure
00:54as any of those other guys.
00:56Then we got another guy right down there in Kansas City,
01:00Chris Jones, where does he rush from?
01:02Inside.
01:02Inside.
01:03And he still gets double-digit sacks
01:05and he disrupts everything.
01:07We have to get that level of play
01:08from our interior guys on defense
01:10and that changes it up for everybody.
01:12Agree, I totally agree.
01:13I don't know that we will.
01:15You certainly hope that that's what happens.
01:18But there is a massive factor in all this
01:20that I think has really, really been a problem
01:24in the run game.
01:27We're talking about football one-on-one.
01:28We're going even more basic.
01:30We're going to football elementary school.
01:31They've been bad tacklers.
01:33Yeah.
01:34And Bobby Wagner might not be the same player
01:37he was 10 years ago.
01:39But he's a tackle.
01:41He's a very short tackler.
01:43Watching Sammer still.
01:45And he is super active in the run game.
01:47He is a hitter, like a thumper, downhill.
01:53Jeremy Chin, I don't know that Jeremy Chin
01:58is a really capable cover guy.
02:01I think there are real questions
02:04when there's good backs and tight ends on the other side
02:06about some of the folks that are going to be forced
02:08into coverage roles.
02:09But I think in the run game,
02:11this unit is built much better.
02:15And that, you know what makes life a lot easier
02:20for a pass rusher trying to get the edge?
02:21Jamin Davis trying to learn
02:23what the hell he's doing from the edge?
02:24Third and eight instead of third and four.
02:26Like, let's see, if you can be a good tackling team,
02:30maybe it limits the ease with which a team
02:33could go down the field.
