00:00Welcome back guys, today we're going to learn about comparing numbers.
00:10Let's head on over and take a look.
00:17Here we have the symbols greater than, less than, and equal to.
00:23We will be using these symbols to compare numbers.
00:28Here we have two groups of ones blocks.
00:30We need to compare these groups of blocks.
00:33The first thing we need to do is count how many is in each group.
00:37We start on the left and we can see that there are four blocks.
00:42And on the right side we have ten blocks.
00:46We need to use one of the three symbols to compare these two groups.
00:52I like to think of this symbol as a big mouth that is always hungry.
00:57It wants to eat the biggest amount so the open side should always face toward the biggest
01:02number.
01:03One thing that helps me is to remember that just like reading a book, we start on the
01:08left.
01:09Knowing this will help us remember if it is greater than or less than.
01:13Ok, so we have four on the left and ten on the right.
01:18The symbol's mouth will open to the larger number.
01:21Which number is larger?
01:25The ten is larger so the mouth opens to the ten.
01:30If we were to read this we would say four is less than ten.
01:36Let's look at another problem.
01:40Here we have eight blocks on the left and six blocks on the right.
01:45The open mouth faces toward the bigger number.
01:48So which is bigger?
01:52The eight is bigger so the mouth opens toward the eight.
01:56Now to read this sentence we start from the left and say eight is greater than six.
02:05Great job guys!
02:06Alright, now we can move into some bigger numbers.
02:11Ok, let's compare these numbers and see which symbol to use.
02:16Here we have the number 452 and the number 425.
02:22To help me compare I am going to put the numbers on top of each other.
02:26I will put the number on the left on top and the number on the right on the bottom.
02:33Now that we have them lined up let's compare them using our knowledge of place value.
02:37We start with the biggest value first which is the hundreds place.
02:41In the hundreds place both numbers have 400.
02:44So the hundreds are the same.
02:46Let's move on to the tens place.
02:48In the tens place in the top number we have 50 and in the number below we have 20.
02:54Which number is greater 50 or 20?
02:59The 50 is greater so right away we know that 452 is a bigger number.
03:07This symbol wants to eat the larger number so which number will it want to eat?
03:13Right 452!
03:16If we were to read this statement we would start from the left and say 452 is greater
03:22than 425.
03:24Awesome job guys you're doing great!
03:29Here we have another set of numbers to compare.
03:32On the left we have 694 and on the right we have 697.
03:37Can you tell me which number is bigger?
03:41Well my initial thought is that they look almost the same.
03:44But let's compare them like we did before.
03:49Let's start in the hundreds place.
03:51Both numbers have 600 in the hundreds place so the hundreds are the same.
03:56Now if we look at the tens place we see that they both have 90 in the tens place.
04:01Now we look at the ones place and the number on top has 4 ones and the number on bottom
04:06has 7 ones.
04:08We know that 7 is the greater number.
04:11697 is greater than 694.
04:18Now we need to face the mouth towards the greater number which is 697.
04:25Now can you guys read this statement for me?
04:32Correct 694 is less than 697.
04:36Great job again!
04:38Alright guys this has been tons of fun but I have to get going.
04:41We'll see you next time ok?
04:43Bye!
