00:00:00The kingdom of Bahrain is a tiny island nation.
00:00:29But it looms large on the world stage as host to a round of the Formula One World Championship.
00:00:34Welcome to the Acura pre-race show for the Grand Prix of Bahrain.
00:00:40Hello everyone, I'm Bob Varsha.
00:00:41There's a beautiful look down at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir, the central
00:00:46part of Bahrain.
00:00:48David Hobbs, Steve Matchett alongside Peter Windsor will be live from the grid in a moment.
00:00:52Let's get right to our morning warm up and check the top stories of the weekend thus
00:00:56far.
00:00:57Steve, lead us off.
00:00:58That is Lewis Hamilton.
00:00:59Nobody likes to see their driver have an accident in Formula One.
00:01:02It's very difficult to get any productive data after that, but that's exactly what happened
00:01:06to Lewis Hamilton.
00:01:07Fortunately, it was Friday.
00:01:09Look at this impact into the barrier.
00:01:11Big enough to write the chassis off.
00:01:13Damage to the suspension points.
00:01:15His mechanics and engineers working until 4.30 on Saturday morning preparing a brand
00:01:20new MP4-23 chassis for Hamilton.
00:01:23Driver is unharmed.
00:01:24He says he's happy with the new car.
00:01:26All being well, there are points on the board coming for Team McLaren.
00:01:30How about you, David?
00:01:33Well, for the first time ever, we've got a pole on pole.
00:01:37Robert Kubica came into the sport in 2006 at the Hungarian Grand Prix and was on the
00:01:41podium within races at Monza.
00:01:44Last year he had a little bit of a lackluster season, but he put it down to his race engineer.
00:01:47But this year he's been very strong and yesterday he really cemented his position by taking
00:01:51the pole position away from Felipe Massa.
00:01:54The first time a driver and constructor have got the pole together for the first time,
00:01:58their maiden pole, is Barrichello.
00:02:00There's Mario Tyson.
00:02:01The team manager looking very excited.
00:02:03The last time this happened, a driver and team, was Barrichello and Jordan back in 94.
00:02:09Well, with all the action on track, any fan knows that one of the biggest stories in Formula
00:02:171 in the last week has been the allegations of a sexual scandal involving that man.
00:02:22The president of the international governing body, the FIA, Max Mosley.
00:02:25The details are sorted.
00:02:28A number of clubs and four of the six manufacturers in Formula 1 have called for Max's dismissal
00:02:33or his resignation.
00:02:34He says he will not give it.
00:02:36This story will go on for some time.
00:02:38Right now, Max Mosley is the talk of the Formula 1 pit lane and he remains in power.
00:02:45That's our morning warm-up.
00:02:47Here's the live pictures from the garage area.
00:02:51There's Felipe Massa, who is absolutely killer in this Ferrari all weekend, driving under
00:02:57enormous pressure from the Italian media after his recent struggles to start the 2008 season.
00:03:03He'll be looking for redemption today in Bahrain.
00:03:06With that, let's go to the fourth member of our broadcast team, live down on the starting
00:03:10grid.
00:03:11Here's Peter Windsor.
00:03:12Thanks very much, Bob.
00:03:15Yes, Felipe Massa, brilliantly quick.
00:03:18And I've got to say, that's a bit of a surprise, because Ferrari, for the first time since
00:03:21Canada last year, because brakes are so important here, have switched from Brembo brakes to
00:03:25carbon industry.
00:03:26We know how badly that both drivers fared with them in Canada last year, but Massa obviously
00:03:30loves them.
00:03:31But maybe that's one of the reasons that Kimi Räikkönen hasn't been so good this weekend.
00:03:34I'm standing here with a massive crowd next to me.
00:03:37Brilliant atmosphere.
00:03:38We just had the Gulf Air A330 Airbus fly over at about 10 feet.
00:03:42Brilliant to see.
00:03:43A lot going on on the grid.
00:03:44We'll be back shortly.
00:03:45All right.
00:03:46Thanks very much, Peter.
00:03:47The arrival of a Gulf Air airliner over this track is a regular thing.
00:03:53I mean, an air show like no other, and it is spectacular.
00:03:57The drivers are on their reconnaissance laps, making their way to the grid.
00:04:00There is the Gulf Air, signature Formula 1 aircraft.
00:04:05Beautiful thing to see.
00:04:06We'll be back to Bahrain.
00:04:10This coverage of the Grand Prix of Bahrain pre-race show is presented by Acura.
00:04:15Acura.
00:04:16Advance.
00:04:17Through fire and ice.
00:04:18You're ready for takeoff?
00:04:19Let's go.
00:04:20Tommy Kendall and champ car star Paul Tracy push the limits of the new Mercedes AMG.
00:04:21That was real close.
00:04:22Mercedes Test Drive.
00:04:23Tuesday night, 8 Eastern, only on...
00:04:36We advance in leaps and bounds, from generation to generation.
00:04:43At Acura, we help people advance, from where they are, to where they could be.
00:05:00Acura.
00:05:01Advance.
00:05:02We have recycling plans that fit the biggest companies, and programs that help others get
00:05:13started.
00:05:14We're there for you every night, and on the job with you every day.
00:05:18When you put race management to work, you get...
00:05:23Welcome back to the Acura pre-race show for the Grand Prix of Bahrain.
00:05:26There is Patrick Head, technical director and part owner of the Williams Toyota team,
00:05:32walking the grid.
00:05:33And that's where you'll find our Peter Windsor, standing by with McLaren Mercedes driver Heikki
00:05:36Kovalainen.
00:05:37Peter?
00:05:38Heikki Kovalainen and his race engineer, Mark Slade.
00:05:42A lot of race wins in world championships behind Mark.
00:05:45Heikki, if I could interrupt just for one second to say, congratulations again on the
00:05:48great podium in Malaysia, but different weekend here.
00:05:51Tires, brakes, and of course, fuel load here.
00:05:53Big talking points.
00:05:54Yeah, absolutely.
00:05:55And to me, the car has felt better here than it felt in Malaysia, to be honest.
00:06:02Maybe everybody else is experiencing the same thing.
00:06:04Maybe different kind of circuit, and tires maybe working slightly better, but we'll see.
00:06:07You know, OK, we are not in the front row, but we are still in a good position to make
00:06:11a good fight, and hopefully the strategy works out today, and we can still score some good
00:06:16points.
00:06:17You look to be in a perfect position, Heikki.
00:06:18You can watch that first corner accident.
00:06:20You can pick your way through it.
00:06:21You can cut the tires, the fuel load from where you are.
00:06:24Easy.
00:06:25Yeah.
00:06:26So, you know, we hopefully get through the first corner without any problems, and after
00:06:27that, we put the tow down and see what happens.
00:06:30Very best of luck.
00:06:31Thanks for talking to us.
00:06:32Jean-Michel, I gather George Lucas is over by Lewis Hamilton.
00:06:36Let's see if we can have a look at that.
00:06:38Quite a lot of celebrities here today.
00:06:39I see over in the distance there, you probably won't be able to see him from where we are,
00:06:43but I can see Lord March from the Goodwood Festival.
00:06:45I know he's been over in the Bahamas recently, thinking about doing a Bahamas Speed Week
00:06:49revival, but let's make our way over here to have a look at the atmosphere around Lewis
00:06:54Hamilton's car.
00:06:55Sir Jackie Stewart there in all his glory and stature.
00:06:59Great to see Lewis.
00:07:01Lewis has really done a brilliant job recovering from that shunt, and as I said earlier, interesting
00:07:06to see that Ferrari have now joined McLaren on the carbon industry brakes.
00:07:10They're much harder wearing in this heat and in this sort of temperature.
00:07:15So we'll move our way around here.
00:07:17Just have a look at the Ferraris to see what the atmosphere is like on the Felipe Massa
00:07:22car.
00:07:23He's not even in place yet, and it's quite a long time for him to have made the grid.
00:07:26Kimi Räikkönen, meanwhile, if we can have a look at Kimi, because it's been a weird
00:07:33weekend for Kimi.
00:07:34There's Chris Dyer, the Australian race engineer.
00:07:35I'll see if I can get a word with Chris just to see if he'll probably say no.
00:07:39Chris live on speed, can I ask you one question about how it's going with Kimi?
00:07:43He said, oh, sometimes we have these days when we don't feel quite as good as others.
00:07:46How would you react to that?
00:07:47We're all human.
00:07:48Well, I think that says it all, Chris.
00:07:52How do you think it's going to go today versus McLaren and BMW?
00:07:55Look, as always, it depends on when everybody stops.
00:07:58But, you know, we've had pretty good pace and we're reasonably confident that we won't
00:08:02be the first people that stop.
00:08:04So it should be OK.
00:08:05We just need a nice clean start and I think we'll be able to do something reasonable.
00:08:10Speaking of stopping, Felipe is still in the garage.
00:08:13Is there any issue with the car?
00:08:14No, I think they just had a small problem with his earplugs.
00:08:17So no issue with the car, just need to change the earplugs.
00:08:19So we had to take his helmet off.
00:08:21OK, thanks very much, Chris.
00:08:22Bob, I think back to let's have a quick look at Kimi under here looking very cool.
00:08:26The ice, the Iceman coming off a very good win at the Malaysian Grand Prix, but not quite
00:08:32as quick here as he was in Malaysia.
00:08:34But we'll see.
00:08:35Back to you, Bob.
00:08:36All right.
00:08:37Thanks very much, Peter.
00:08:38After yesterday's qualifying, Kimi Raikkonen said he was unsure whether the strategy strategy
00:08:41decisions that he and his engineers had made on Saturday were correct for this race.
00:08:47And of course, you have to put your race fuel in in Q3.
00:08:51So that's a big issue.
00:08:55Welcome back.
00:08:56You can see from the flags that the wind is blowing smartly here at Bahrain International
00:09:00Circuit.
00:09:01That's one of the issues these drivers face as Felipe Massa finally makes his belated
00:09:05arrival on the grid.
00:09:09That wind will blow sand onto the track, causing lots of problems for these Bridgestone tires
00:09:13on all of the cars.
00:09:15Let's go live to Peter Windsor once again.
00:09:20Thanks, Bob.
00:09:21Back to the Honda team with Rubens Barrichello.
00:09:22Rubens, I've got to say, fantastic start to the year, driving really well.
00:09:25Looks like the car's on the rise, too.
00:09:27Yeah, the car is very drivable.
00:09:29You know, we still don't have the performance that we wish to have, but that's always racing
00:09:34drivers.
00:09:35We're never happy with the things we have and we're putting a lot of pressure.
00:09:39I think the car is working well aerodynamically, but the compromise is a bit too high yet.
00:09:44We're not too fast on the straight.
00:09:46We are the two slowest cars on the on the pack.
00:09:50The engine is actually good power, so we need to take a good compromise on the aerodynamics.
00:09:55But today is windy.
00:09:56It might pay the price to run high downforce.
00:09:59Rubens, great to talk to you, as ever.
00:10:01Very best of luck.
00:10:02We'll let you get ready.
00:10:03Preparations for the Bahrain Grand Prix, talking there to Jock Clear, his loyal race engineer.
00:10:09If you look over towards Red Bull Air and Air Serenity around that team, I've got to
00:10:14say they need to be a little bit worried because, as we heard from David Coulthard yesterday
00:10:18after qualifying, they do have problems now with traction and also with what they call
00:10:23now curb strike.
00:10:24A nice phrase, I think.
00:10:25It's the way you can ride the curbs and the way you can actually drive the car on power
00:10:29on exit.
00:10:30We see Sam Michael just walking down here.
00:10:31Let's have a quick word to Sam.
00:10:32Sam, you've been a little bit further up the grid.
00:10:35What's going on up there?
00:10:36What have you seen in terms of wing settings?
00:10:38Who's going to go?
00:10:39Well, fuel load.
00:10:40Let's have the whole run.
00:10:41Run down on the race.
00:10:42Well, it's basically what we spend this time on the grid doing is looking at other aerodynamic
00:10:45upgrades people may have bought.
00:10:48Just looking at a few interesting things around the back of the Red Bull, the Honda
00:10:51and also McLaren.
00:10:52In terms of the race itself, it looks like I think most people in the top ten will be
00:10:56on a two-stop.
00:10:57Quite a few two-stops after as well.
00:10:59Maybe even some one-stops in there.
00:11:01Tire decorations higher than Malaysia, but it's not that bad.
00:11:04In terms of who's strong, I think Ferrari, they'll be right up there.
00:11:08Which is the preferred of the two Bridgestone compounds?
00:11:11The least effective, shall we say?
00:11:12The least effective compound.
00:11:13Primal, probably.
00:11:14The harder tyre will be the best tyre to do the first stint on.
00:11:18But it's not that different between the two of them, so I think you'll definitely see
00:11:21a mix.
00:11:22Sam, thanks very much.
00:11:23Great to talk to you.
00:11:24Good report there from the grid as we just see Timo Glock over on the wall here.
00:11:28We have a quick word to Timo.
00:11:29Wish him luck.
00:11:30We did that in Malaysia.
00:11:31It didn't give him a lot of luck, but I think he'll be feeling a little bit better.
00:11:36Timo, just one question.
00:11:39How's the risk going?
00:11:40Toyota on the rise.
00:11:41How are you feeling physically now?
00:11:42We know that you had that accident, of course, in Australia and you did Malaysia, but it
00:11:46must be 100% now.
00:11:47Yeah, I'm in Malaysia.
00:11:48I had enough time to recover because I did only half a lap and then I was taken out in
00:11:53the race.
00:11:54So risk is okay and I feel okay so far and just want to survive the first corner and
00:11:59then finish the race.
00:12:02And that's as strong as possible.
00:12:03Well, as Alan Prost used to say, think of your car surrounded by cotton wool.
00:12:06Nobody's allowed to touch it.
00:12:08Very best of luck.
00:12:09And back to you, Bob.
00:12:10All right.
00:12:11Thanks, Peter.
00:12:12I thought Timo Glock had his racing earpieces in.
00:12:14Instead, every kid knows.
00:12:16That was an iPod.
00:12:17I wonder what he listens to before he gets into his car.
00:12:19We'll be back.
00:12:25Welcome back to the Acura pre-race show for the Grand Prix of Bahrain coming up shortly
00:12:29here on speed.
00:12:30Right now, we'd like to look beyond today's race to a poignant anniversary coming up tomorrow.
00:12:35Monday marks the 40th year since the racing world was shaken to its roots by an accident
00:12:40in a Formula 2 race at Hockenheim, Germany, that took the life of the sport's unquestioned
00:12:44star, Jim Clark.
00:12:46Sit back now for a moment and listen to the voice of the man himself, as well as those
00:12:50of some who knew him, and one of the many who were inspired by the legend of the original
00:12:54Flying Scott.
00:13:00I think it was really more than a curiosity to see what it was like on a racetrack, rather
00:13:07than, you know, the urge to go out and beat everyone.
00:13:11I know exactly where I was.
00:13:13I know what I was doing.
00:13:14It was one of the most confusing days of my life, because Jim Clark wasn't going to die
00:13:19in a racing car.
00:13:21Not Jim Clark.
00:13:22Maybe other people, but not Jim Clark.
00:13:24I was in Spain.
00:13:25I was doing a safety inspection, ironically, at Jarama, and a man came around the racetrack
00:13:30and told me that Jim Clark had had a big accident, and it didn't look good.
00:13:34He went away, and he came back and told me Jimmy had died.
00:13:37Well, I can remember it was the first day I did an autosport club race report from Snetterton,
00:13:43and I remember getting back to London and picking up an early copy of the Daily Telegraph
00:13:49and thinking, this is just my luck.
00:13:52I put my foot in the door to start a career in motorsport, and now Grand Prix racing.
00:13:57All racing will be banned, because if Jimmy Clark can be killed, then it's quite clearly
00:14:02not safe.
00:14:03I was at Brands Hatch, the BOAC 500 sports car race.
00:14:08I think I was about 15.
00:14:09It's just one of those days I shall never, ever forget.
00:14:12Place was stunned.
00:14:13I mean, I can feel it now, almost complete and utter silence, you know, people just staring
00:14:20blankly at each other.
00:14:22The whole place went numb, really, and I still, even talking about it now, tend to feel a
00:14:28little bit numb.
00:14:33I just grew up in a generation which thought Jimmy was magical, you know, and perversely
00:14:37we always wanted him to be beaten, but no, we really didn't want him to be beaten.
00:14:42It was very odd.
00:14:43I actually used to support Graham Hill against Jim Clark.
00:14:47It was really because Jim Clark was by far the better and dominant, and I was naturally
00:14:53supporting the underdog, because I didn't want to see somebody disappear off into the
00:14:57distance.
00:14:58I went to the village that he grew up in, and when you go there, and his headstone there
00:15:02is his, I don't know, is his former Formula One world champion, so he was still very close
00:15:07to his roots, and just, as I say, one of the greatest drivers in the world ever.
00:15:13I started as an amateur hobby with no idea or no intention of becoming world champion.
00:15:20I don't really want to prove anything.
00:15:31Me, I saw Jimmy drive on five separate occasions, he was sublime every time, it was mostly in
00:15:36Australia, and then in March 68, a month before he died, I spent about 30 minutes chatting
00:15:41to him at Sydney airport.
00:15:42I was a young kid, he was polite, kind, thoughtful, supportive, and then he died.
00:15:50I heard about the news early on a grey Monday morning in Sydney on the radio.
00:15:56I don't think I went to school for about a week, it took me a long time to get out of
00:15:58bed, but you know what, I sort of continued, because the energy of that conversation I
00:16:03had with Jimmy stayed in the background of my life, and is still there today, and for
00:16:07me, his spirit lives on.
00:16:09Great to see a new memorial being erected now at Hockenheim on the site of the accident,
00:16:13designed by his long-term friend and semi-manager, Ian Scott-Watson.
00:16:17Well, I guess my memory of Jimmy, of course, is being told.
00:16:22I was at that BOAC 1000 Club, as Ian Phillips was talking about, and I was wandering around
00:16:26between driving stints, just watching my co-driver, Paul Hawkins, through clearways, and somebody
00:16:31came up to me and said, you know that Jimmy Clarke's been killed at Hockenheim, and I
00:16:33said, you can't be true, you can't possibly be true, and he said, yeah, it is true, and
00:16:38I mean, I felt just like everybody else we've seen, like Jackie Stewart said, Jimmy Clarke's
00:16:43not the sort of guy that's going to get killed, and it was just shattering.
00:16:47Well, for me, I was never privileged enough to know Jimmy, because I was but six in 68,
00:16:53and it would be another 20 years before I broke into Formula One, but what became very
00:16:57evident, talking to people who knew him, like David and Peter and Alan, what he was
00:17:02a massive figure in the sport, and he formed that true symbiotic relationship between mechanics
00:17:07and engineers and driver, which produced the Lotus 25 for him, and it always reminds me
00:17:12really of very poignant words that Jackie Stewart said, not Jim Clarke, not Jim Clarke,
00:17:17and to me, that's exactly what we all thought about Senna in my career in the sport, and
00:17:22he was, without any question, a massive, massive figure.
00:17:25Well, younger fans may not realize the impact a guy like Jim Clarke has, so let's engage
00:17:29in a little hypothetical exercise here.
00:17:32Clarke's accident-shortened career was very brief by contemporary standards.
00:17:36There you see Jim Clarke's numbers on the left, compared with those of the current standard,
00:17:40Michael Schumacher, who is the leader in so many categories, wins, poles, fastest laps,
00:17:45championships, but he did have those 249 career starts, so if you extrapolate Jim Clarke's
00:17:51career to 249 starts, at the rate he collected poles, he would have nearly doubled the career
00:17:58mark of Michael Schumacher.
00:18:00Although Schumacher would still have the edge in wins, fast laps would have gone clearly
00:18:04to Clarke, as well as grand slams, which is the combination of pole leading every lap,
00:18:09winning the race, and setting fast lap of the race, and perhaps it's appropriate that
00:18:13the two men would both theoretically have had seven championships.
00:18:18Of course, Jim Clarke also drove a Lotus that was much less reliable than Michael Schumacher's
00:18:23Ferrari.
00:18:24It is, as I said, a poignant anniversary Monday.
00:18:29Speeds coverage of the Grand Prix of Bahrain pre-race show is presented by Acura.
00:18:33Acura, advanced.
00:18:35It's an old adage that to be great, you must have a great opponent, and today, we see the
00:18:45two top teams in Formula One renewing their old rivalry with fresh intensity.
00:18:51McLaren and Ferrari, Ferrari and McLaren.
00:18:54It's hard to mention one without the other.
00:18:57McLaren wins in Australia, but the parallel big story is what went wrong with Ferrari.
00:19:02Ferrari wins in Malaysia, and the first question is, what happened to McLaren?
00:19:07They share the loftiest heights in the record book.
00:19:10McLaren's total of Formula One Grand Prix victories is surpassed only by Ferrari's.
00:19:16Each team has a proven warrior in the cockpit, Kimi Raikkonen for Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton
00:19:21for McLaren.
00:19:22Last year, they dueled for the championship to the last race, to the last point, and this
00:19:29year, each has won a Grand Prix.
00:19:32With these two drivers so evenly matched, the struggle for supremacy may be decided
00:19:36by each team's second man, Felipe Massa for Ferrari, Heikki Kovalainen for McLaren.
00:19:42So far, Heikki has scored points in both races to help give McLaren an early lead, but last
00:19:48year, Felipe won here in Bahrain and at the next Grand Prix in Spain.
00:19:52The championship will be close, and the places to look for clues to the outcome may not be
00:19:57the headlines.
00:19:58Watch carefully.
00:19:59The Grand Prix of Bahrain is next.
00:20:02And then there were three, three teams at the top of Formula One as BMW Sauber has joined
00:20:18McLaren and Ferrari by taking pole position for round three of the 2008 Formula One season,
00:20:24the Grand Prix of Bahrain.
00:20:25Hello, everybody.
00:20:26I'm Bob Varsha with David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.
00:20:29Let's check the BMW track analysis.
00:20:30David?
00:20:31Yes, David.
00:20:32Robert Kubica, who finally set the pole position, going down the front straight here about 195
00:20:36miles an hour towards the end and very hard braking, very hard braking into turn one.
00:20:41This is where you get this rear tyre degradation coming out of turn one, going straight into
00:20:45turn two.
00:20:46This little left-hand kink and right-hand sweep here.
00:20:49Very tough on the tyre.
00:20:50A lot of sand blows over this track, and as you can see, it's very open.
00:20:54Reference points are scarce.
00:20:55Into turn three.
00:20:56You see some overtaking in this one.
00:20:57It's a pretty quick corner.
00:20:59Right-hander there puts a lot of load on the left-front tyre.
00:21:02Then we go into this left, right, left S, and this is where Hamilton came unglued the
00:21:07other day.
00:21:08Put his wheel on that right there, but only more than that.
00:21:10Down to this first of the hairpins here in the infield.
00:21:14Hard acceleration out of there.
00:21:15Then we approach the next hairpin.
00:21:17As we approach it, over that little crest downhill, you can see all those tyre marks
00:21:20on the left.
00:21:21Well, left fronts lock up all the time.
00:21:22I'm going to make a good exit from here because from here on, it's very fast down into turn
00:21:27ten, which is his first left-hand sweep.
00:21:30Go down a couple of gears here.
00:21:32Not much of an opportunity for overtaking, unfortunately, through here.
00:21:35Then they gradually click up through the gearbox here.
00:21:37Very, very quick.
00:21:38As you can see, the ground, not a lot of elevation change here, but it sort of rolls a bit, so
00:21:42you keep on coming over these little crests, and you can't quite see.
00:21:45Don't forget, the camera we're on board with here is about a foot above the driver, so
00:21:50he has a far poorer view of this track than we're having at the moment.
00:21:54Very fast downhill straight here to the last corner, and this is a crucial corner.
00:21:58You've got to get over here really well because the real overtaking opportunity is at the
00:22:02end of this straight, so you've got to come onto this straight well.
00:22:05And with that, the cars roll off on their formation lap, and we'll turn to the starting
00:22:08grid for today's Grand Prix of Bahrain.
00:22:12On the pole, Robert Kubica of Poland, the first for him for any race car named a Sauber
00:22:17in Formula 1 and for anything other than a Ferrari or McLaren in the last 22 races.
00:22:22After Kubica, Felipe Massa has been dominant all weekend in the Ferrari, but he desperately
00:22:26needs a victory to get the press off his back after two races to start the season without
00:22:31a finish.
00:22:32Row two, the two supposed team leaders, Lewis Hamilton and McLaren, who has never won other
00:22:36than the pole.
00:22:37And next to him, Kimi Räikkönen in his Ferrari, who most definitely has won from quite deep
00:22:41in the field.
00:22:42On row three, Henke Kovalainen in the second McLaren Mercedes.
00:22:45The lap time differential from qualifying two to Q3 suggests he may be heavier than
00:22:50those ahead of him.
00:22:51Next to him, Nick Heidfeld in the other BMW Sauber, his 26th consecutive top ten start,
00:22:56the longest streak among active drivers.
00:22:58Jarno Trulli lines up seventh in the Toyota, the team still showing signs of improvement.
00:23:02Alongside him, Nico Rosberg in the lead Williams.
00:23:05He was very quick on Saturday here and he did his first race ever.
00:23:09He did the fastest lap here in Bahrain.
00:23:11On row five, Jenson Button has the first top ten start for a Honda this year.
00:23:15Next to him, Fernando Alonso, a two-time winner of this race, ran the third qualifying session
00:23:20on hard tires.
00:23:21He's obviously working on race setup over obtaining a better grid position.
00:23:25The Red Bull of Mark Webber, grid's 11th, not as good as he did last year when both
00:23:29of these Red Bull cars retired.
00:23:30Next to him, the second Honda, Rubens Barrichello, up three places from last year and the team
00:23:34definitely moving forward.
00:23:36On row seven is Timo Glock in the second Toyota, still struggling and looking for his first
00:23:40finish since his cup of coffee in Formula One years ago with the Jordan team.
00:23:44Next to him, Renault rookie Nelson Piquet, still serving his apprenticeship and learning.
00:23:48Sebastian Bordet leads row eight in his Toyota Rosso and out-qualified his teammate for the
00:23:52first time on his first appearance here at this circuit.
00:23:55Next to him, the second Williams of Kazuka Nakajima.
00:23:58On row nine, David Coulthard hasn't liked his Red Bull all weekend and he's running
00:24:02it on a track where he's only scored a point in four previous visits.
00:24:06Next to him, Giancarlo Fisichella, another gray beard in the Formula One ranks in the
00:24:10first of the Force India cars.
00:24:11Well, from the geriatric row, we go to the teenage row.
00:24:14Sebastian Vettel in the second Toyota Rosso, not going as well as we thought he would do.
00:24:17Next to Adrian Sutil in the Indian Force, who really, his style is starting to fade.
00:24:22He needs to buff it up a bit, otherwise he could find himself out on India.
00:24:25That's right.
00:24:26Supposedly, he was being talked to by McLaren during the winter.
00:24:29And on the 11th and final row, Anthony Davidson and Takuma Sato in the Super Aguri Hondas.
00:24:34Davidson off the schneid, his last car on the grid for the first time this season because
00:24:38his teammate Sato crashed in Q2.
00:24:41Now let's turn to the storylines for today's race.
00:24:44Steve Matchett, kick us off.
00:24:46Once again, if I keep talking about brakes at one race, they're going to become a factor.
00:24:50And as Dave was talking about, brakes are a big factor around the Bahrain Grand Prix
00:24:55track.
00:24:56Nothing to fear, but Phil himself, poor old Felipe Massa, has got the year off to a terrible
00:25:01start.
00:25:02He's on the front row.
00:25:03He's been quickest all through practice.
00:25:04He should win this race.
00:25:05Is he going to make a mistake, though?
00:25:08And today could be the first Polish victory lap in Formula One.
00:25:12Everybody's talking about Robert Kubica and all that he has accomplished.
00:25:16He's very much the lone ranger among Polish racing drivers.
00:25:18Here he is on pole for a Formula One Grand Prix, a first in so many ways.
00:25:24Good luck to him.
00:25:25Today may be the biggest day of his life if he can win this race.
00:25:29There he is in the white BMW Sauber to the right, the clean line, and it was never more
00:25:33important.
00:25:34Here comes the start.
00:25:35Oh, great start for Hamilton.
00:25:42Slow getting away.
00:25:43Kovalainen goes around him, and Massa jumps ahead of the Sauber of Kubica as they head
00:25:47down into turn one, keeping Raikkonen third, Kovalainen fourth.
00:25:54And it looks like Kovalainen got Raikkonen for third.
00:25:56Oh, that Kovalainen, he's a fighter.
00:25:58You remember him in that Japanese...
00:25:59Look at the dust there on the left.
00:26:01You can see what we mean about the sand blowing on this track.
00:26:04Very gritty out there and slippery too.
00:26:06Whoa, somebody locking up badly at the back.
00:26:10I think Coulthard is missing his front wing there.
00:26:13Oh, Kovalainen by somebody.
00:26:16Where's Lewis Hamilton?
00:26:17Somebody's blowing up at the back there.
00:26:19Hamilton just got destroyed on that start.
00:26:21That was him locking him up down into the turn.
00:26:23On board with Hamilton now.
00:26:24That's one of the Renaults ahead of him.
00:26:25That must be Alonso, who started 10th to Hamilton's third.
00:26:26Oh, wow.
00:26:27And Alonso isn't going to let him by easy either.
00:26:28Although I think Alonso's got a lot of fuel on board.
00:26:29He was a lot slower in Q3 than he was in Q2.
00:26:30Raikkonen is in the lead.
00:26:31Oh, look at that.
00:26:32Oh, look at that.
00:26:33Oh, look at that.
00:26:34Oh, look at that.
00:26:35Oh, look at that.
00:26:36Oh, look at that.
00:26:37Oh, look at that.
00:26:38Oh, look at that.
00:26:42Oh, look at that.
00:26:43Oh, look at that.
00:26:44Oh, look at that.
00:26:45Oh, look at that.
00:26:46Oh, look at that.
00:26:47Oh, look at that.
00:26:48Oh, look at that.
00:26:49Oh, look at that.
00:26:50Oh, look at that.
00:26:51Oh, look at that.
00:26:52Oh, look at that.
00:26:53Oh, look at that.

00:27:06Oh, look at that.
00:27:07Oh, look at that.
00:27:08Oh, look at that.
00:27:09Oh, look at that.
00:27:10Oh, look at that.
00:27:11Oh, look at that.
00:27:12Oh, look at that.
00:27:13Oh, look at that.
00:27:14Oh, look at that.

00:30:54Oh, look at that.
00:30:55Oh, look at that.
00:30:56Oh, look at that.
00:30:57Oh, look at that.
00:30:58Oh, look at that.
00:30:59Oh, look at that.
00:31:00Oh, look at that.
00:31:01Oh, look at that.
00:31:02Oh, look at that.
00:31:03Oh, look at that.
00:31:04Oh, look at that.
00:31:05Oh, look at that.
00:31:06Oh, look at that.
00:31:07Oh, look at that.
00:31:08Oh, look at that.
00:31:09Oh, look at that.
00:31:10Oh, look at that.
00:31:11Oh, look at that.
00:31:12Oh, look at that.
00:31:13Oh, look at that.
00:31:14Oh, look at that.
00:31:15Oh, look at that.
00:31:16Oh, look at that.
00:31:17Oh, look at that.
00:31:18Oh, look at that.
00:31:19Oh, look at that.
00:31:20Oh, look at that.
00:31:21Oh, look at that.
00:31:22Oh, look at that.
00:31:23Oh, look at that.
00:31:24Oh, look at that.
00:31:25Oh, look at that.
00:31:26Oh, look at that.
00:31:27Oh, look at that.
00:31:28Oh, look at that.
00:31:29Oh, look at that.
00:31:30Oh, look at that.
00:31:31Oh, look at that.
00:31:32Oh, look at that.
00:31:33Oh, look at that.
00:31:34Oh, look at that.
00:31:35Oh, look at that.
00:31:36Oh, look at that.
00:31:37Oh, look at that.
00:31:38Oh, look at that.
00:31:39Oh, look at that.
00:31:40Oh, look at that.
00:31:41Oh, look at that.
00:31:42Oh, look at that.
00:31:43Oh, look at that.
00:31:44Oh, look at that.
00:31:45Oh, look at that.
00:31:46Oh, look at that.
00:31:47Oh, look at that.
00:31:48Oh, look at that.
00:31:49Oh, look at that.
00:31:50Oh, look at that.
00:31:51Oh, look at that.
00:31:52Oh, look at that.
00:31:53Oh, look at that.
00:31:54Oh, look at that.
00:31:55Oh, look at that.
00:31:56Oh, look at that.
00:31:57Oh, look at that.
00:31:58Oh, look at that.
00:31:59Oh, look at that.
00:32:00Oh, look at that.
00:32:01Oh, look at that.
00:32:02Oh, look at that.
00:32:03Oh, look at that.
00:32:04Oh, look at that.
00:32:05Oh, look at that.
00:32:06Oh, look at that.
00:32:07Oh, look at that.
00:32:08Oh, look at that.
00:32:09Oh, look at that.
00:32:10Oh, look at that.
00:32:11Oh, look at that.
00:32:12Oh, look at that.
00:32:13Oh, look at that.
00:32:14Oh, look at that.
00:32:15Oh, look at that.
00:32:16Oh, look at that.
00:32:17Oh, look at that.
00:32:18Oh, look at that.
00:32:19Oh, look at that.
00:32:20Oh, look at that.
00:32:21Oh, look at that.
00:32:22Oh, look at that.
00:32:23Oh, look at that.
00:32:24Oh, look at that.
00:32:25Oh, look at that.
00:32:26Oh, look at that.
00:32:27Oh, look at that.
00:32:28Oh, look at that.
00:32:29Oh, look at that.
00:32:30Oh, look at that.
00:32:31Oh, look at that.
00:32:32Oh, look at that.
00:32:34Oh, look at that.
00:32:38Oh, look at that.
00:32:40Oh, look at that.
00:32:42Can anybody even continue this lead right now?
00:32:47Can anybody even reach the end of this race?
00:32:52Um, slow.
00:32:53Hey, where's Veritas?
00:32:54Uh.
00:32:55They were gonna swept the tracks up there.
00:32:58Woah.
00:32:59Wow.
00:33:00Wow.
00:33:01Slow.
00:33:02And that's right where he started, on board with Nick Heidfeld.
00:33:08Underneath to get Hickey Kovalainen.
00:33:11That was a P4 a couple of laps ago. Kovalainen went very wide into that left tight left hander.
00:33:17He just got a bit wide going in and probably got onto that dust and lost all his grip.
00:33:21There are the changes in position from the grid to our current situation.
00:33:26And as you can see, lots of guys moving up.
00:33:28Kovalainen, right where he started in 5th now.
00:33:32Kubica has dropped two positions.
00:33:34The big mover there is Fisichella, as I mentioned, from 18th up to 11th.
00:33:38Peter Windsor.
00:33:40Well, Bob, just to add that that was a great pass, I thought, by Nick Heidfeld.
00:33:43That's at that famous turn 9-10 section where if you compromise the very fast kink,
00:33:48you can get inside somebody who's braking too late or locking up going into the tight turn 10.
00:33:53This is what he truly did last year and a great move there by Nick Heidfeld.
00:33:58Kubica now...
00:33:59Kubica not letting Räikkönen get away from him too much.
00:34:02Kimi Räikkönen caught him up and passed him.
00:34:04And as you said, that must be pretty depressing for the BMW guys
00:34:07because we're pretty sure that the Ferrari's got more fuel on board than Kubica.
00:34:11But nevertheless, Kubica not letting him get away now.
00:34:14No, Kubica just set in the fastest lap of 1.36.186 in response to Massa's 36.538.
00:34:21Massa fastest in sector 1, but Kubica certainly putting the hammer down now.
00:34:2530.5 in sector 1.
00:34:27I wonder if this is an issue of getting heat into those soft compound Bridgestone tires.
00:34:32The BMW Sauber coming alive for Robert Kubica.
00:34:36He is a huge underdog here.
00:34:38His pole was so well received up and down the pit lane.
00:34:42He was high-fiving with everybody.
00:34:44I mean, everybody looked happy to see him get that pole.
00:34:47Jenson Button was grinning all over his face when he congratulated him.
00:34:50And so everybody was, I think, pretty happy to see Robert Kubica,
00:34:53who is a very nice guy and he's put his effort into this.
00:34:57He's lost six kilos, like about 13, 14 pounds of weight.
00:35:01And the guy's like a rail in the first place.
00:35:03I mean, that must be a tremendous struggle to lose that much weight and maintain some muscle mass.
00:35:10You know, guys, I think before this race,
00:35:12a lot of the BMW engineers would have been saying to Kubica,
00:35:15take it easy on the rear tires.
00:35:17This is going to be a race about rear tire degradation.
00:35:19Don't push too hard in the early laps.
00:35:21And I got to say, I think he did a great job in those early laps.
00:35:24He didn't push too hard.
00:35:25He didn't allow himself to get sucked into racing the Ferraris.
00:35:28And here he is looking very good now with the tires, so far, in good shape.
00:35:33Well, a moment ago, you saw Felipe Massa come across the line.
00:35:36He reset fast lap with that orbit.
00:35:38And just behind him, Kimi Raikkonen took it away from him.
00:35:41The standard now, 135.393.
00:35:47This is Fisichella and Barrichello, 4.11.
00:35:51Bit of understeer there going into that turn 1.
00:35:58253rd start for Rubens Barrichello
00:36:02as he draws ever closer to Riccardo Petrescu's all-time Formula 1 record of 256 starts.
00:36:10Now, if the Honda has got significantly more wing on the car compared to the Force India,
00:36:16you see the Force India chassis sliding around a little bit.
00:36:18It'll be that midfield section where the Honda will have a chance to prove itself.
00:36:23There's Lewis Hamilton, as you see, 18th place after that pit stop,
00:36:27sliding the McLaren Mercedes, working those soft compound Bridgestone tires.
00:36:33He's got a lot of work ahead of him if he's going to score points here today.
00:36:37We'll be back to Bahrain in a moment.
00:36:42Speed's coverage of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship is brought to you by Toyota.
00:36:47Moving forward, and by Bridgestone.
00:36:49For drivers who want to get the most out of their cars, it's Bridgestone or nothing.
00:36:57Eight laps complete in round three of the 2008 Formula 1 season,
00:37:01live exclusively here on Speed, the Grand Prix of Bahrain.
00:37:04With Peter Windsor, David Hobbs, and Steve Matchett, I'm Bob Varsha.
00:37:07There is Felipe Massa putting a lap on Lewis Hamilton.
00:37:13Excuse me, that's Sutil, who is currently 21st place,
00:37:17and last in the running order, Sebastian Vettel, first car out of the race.
00:37:23He stopped on lap one.
00:37:26There's Robert Kubica, who started from pole.
00:37:29Well, he has here, that's for sure.
00:37:37Won't take long, if he keeps doing that, for the bloom to come off that rose a little bit.
00:37:41As you were saying at the top of the show, about Adrian Sutil,
00:37:44who was just lapped by the race leader on lap nine.
00:37:46I mean, Adrian Sutil, you know, last year, they were talking about him going to McLaren.
00:37:49I mean, the kid's obviously very, very good.
00:37:51He raced Hamilton in European Formula 3 about four years ago, and was very, very quick with him.
00:37:56But, you know, last year, he made a lot of mistakes,
00:38:01and this year, he's doing the same thing again.
00:38:03Overdriving, of course, is what the trouble is.
00:38:07Looking at Hamilton's time relative to Kovalainen and the guys at the top,
00:38:10well, we know Hamilton's had that problem with the wing.
00:38:12Down in the 36s, 36.6s, whereas teammate Kovalainen's in the 35s
00:38:17and setting his personal best lap time now.
00:38:19But remember, they did refuel the car at the same time as changing the nose,
00:38:23so he's got that additional weight of fuel, which is slowing the car considerably.
00:38:27So they will have changed the strategy on Hamilton's car,
00:38:29but that's the reason for Hamilton's slow times now.
00:38:31He's just got a huge amount of fuel on board relative to the opposition.
00:38:34You don't think he would be down to one stopper from now on?
00:38:38Well, it's difficult to say, Dave, because we don't know how much fuel he had on board.
00:38:42Phil Massa, what was last storyline?
00:38:45His own worst enemy.
00:38:47Yeah.
00:38:48Concentrating too much on Sutil, perhaps.
00:38:52If that was Stefano Domenicali, the new Ferrari team principal,
00:38:56I must say he's becoming a bit of a stand-up act
00:38:59in the press conferences of Formula 1 races.
00:39:01After their terrible race in Australia,
00:39:03followed by a dominant run by Raikkonen in Malaysia two weeks ago,
00:39:06Domenicali said, well, we weren't a phenomenon last year,
00:39:10and we're not cart horses this year, you know?
00:39:12It just goes up and down, and you figure things out.
00:39:15He had another one this weekend, a great one-liner,
00:39:18lamenting the fact that they only started second and fourth on the grid,
00:39:22and then he thought about it for a second.
00:39:24He said, well, I'm not bandaging my head before it's broken here.
00:39:27Second and fourth is not the worst thing that could have happened.
00:39:30That's the wing damaged, Steve, by Hamilton mounting him.
00:39:34Exactly, yeah.
00:39:35I just want to highlight that while we're listening to Bob there,
00:39:37but it is a damage to the right fence,
00:39:39the end plate on the wing of Alonso's car.
00:39:45Let's take a closer look at that.
00:39:47Now, look here as well.
00:39:48In between the N and the A on the Renault, on the top flat there,
00:39:51you'll see there's a big chunk missing out of the top of the wing there,
00:39:54and damage to the wing there.
00:39:56So Renault are going to be concerned about that,
00:39:58the longevity of that wing.
00:39:59You certainly don't want the rear wing to be breaking off an F1 car.
00:40:02Kimi Räikkönen will tell you all about that a couple of years ago.
00:40:11Images of Timo Glock in his pursuit of Fernando Alonso.
00:40:14Remarkable how similar the two guys are in driving style.
00:40:17Timo, like Fernando, has that very aggressive initial turn in,
00:40:20and he's not afraid to get the back end out mid-corner either.
00:40:23We just saw him in one of the high-speed corners.
00:40:25The little dose of opposite lock on the Toto looking very nice.
00:40:27Meanwhile, at the front of that group,
00:40:29best of the rest, Jarno truly serenely still holding off Nico Rosberg.
00:40:35From above, you see Nelson Piquet getting by Sebastian Bordet for 13th,
00:40:41and immediately opening up ground.
00:40:43Here's another look.
00:40:45Gets him under braking.
00:40:49Very nicely done.
00:40:51Looks like Bordet thought he might get him back here, but nothing doing.
00:40:54And then it was remarkable the way the Renault pulled away
00:40:57from the Ferrari-powered SDR.
00:41:00There's Massa, his lead currently four and a half seconds
00:41:03over teammate Kimi Räikkönen.
00:41:05Another second and a half back to our pole sitter, Robert Kubica,
00:41:09and three and a half back to Nick Heidfeld, the second salver.
00:41:12Then Kovalainen, another second and a half back in fifth.
00:41:15Now, what's going through Massa's mind,
00:41:17thinking back to the Malaysian Grand Prix a couple of weeks ago,
00:41:20where Kimi Räikkönen got the jump on his teammate
00:41:23by just taking a little bit less fuel,
00:41:25although Räikkönen had the jump at the start.
00:41:27Kimi Räikkönen, a couple of laps more fuel on board,
00:41:30but took less fuel on board during that first stop,
00:41:32which allowed him to get out.
00:41:34I'm sure Massa's plan now is he's got to get away from his teammate
00:41:37and open up a sufficient gap that his teammate Räikkönen
00:41:40won't be able to pull the same stunt on him again.
00:41:42I'm sure that's going through Massa's mind now.
00:41:44Of course, Räikkönen will be trying to close that gap down
00:41:46and do exactly the same job.
00:41:48As Alonso has been pretty downbeat this weekend.
00:41:52Well, that rear wing took a beating.
00:41:54We know Alonso can drive a crippled car.
00:41:56Remember, he was in the Renault at Monza a couple of years ago
00:41:59when he ripped everything off the car and still was quick.
00:42:01Yeah, straight-line speed went up enormously.
00:42:05He just ran into everything.
00:42:08Yeah, and Alonso just set his personal best lap time,
00:42:11the 36.283, so it certainly doesn't seem to be bothering him or the car,
00:42:15but I'm sure the engineers are very concerned by that.
00:42:21Fischer-Keller in the Force India here,
00:42:23being harried by Rubens Barrichello in the Honda.
00:42:29Here's a good look at the Force India car,
00:42:31followed by a good look at the Honda.
00:42:34You can expect a new helmet design on Rubens Barrichello in a few races
00:42:38when he matches and then surpasses the all-time record for starts.
00:42:45Welcome back to the Grand Prix of Bahrain here on Speed.
00:42:48Lewis Hamilton flashes across the start-finish line
00:42:51with a lot of work to do ahead of him,
00:42:53running 18th here on lap number 16 at the Grand Prix of Bahrain.
00:42:59He's just done a lap at a 1.365 compared to Massa's last lap at a 34.4.
00:43:05Off to the left there, you saw those temporary grandstands.
00:43:08They were added to raise the seating capacity for this track,
00:43:11which is only about 34,000.
00:43:14On our Acura pre-race show, you heard filmmaker George Lucas say
00:43:17there's a nice, relaxed atmosphere here in Bahrain,
00:43:20much smaller crowd than they normally get at a Formula 1 race.
00:43:23Peter Windsor is in the pit lane and garage area.
00:43:26Well, Bob, yes, we were saying before the race
00:43:28that it was a very close toss-up
00:43:30between the softer or the harder of the two Bridgestones.
00:43:33An interesting comparison race going on
00:43:35between Jarno Csulli and Nico Rosberg.
00:43:37Csulli, like most of the frontrunners, on the softer of the two compounds,
00:43:40Rosberg on the harder.
00:43:42And we saw over the last four or five laps that Rosberg's pace has dropped away.
00:43:45And now, having let the tyres cool down a bit, he's coming back.
00:43:48So, definitely a different cycle of performance on the harder tyre.
00:43:52Interesting at the moment to see how that battle pans out
00:43:54between the two Toyota-powered cars.
00:43:56This is Button and Coulthard.
00:43:58Button is the quicker car.
00:44:00He's set some pretty quick laps so far.
00:44:02But they're absolutely duking it out.
00:44:04Absolutely going berserk over P19, unfortunately for them.
00:44:08But this is what Grand Prix is all about.
00:44:10I mean, you've got to keep going, never give up.
00:44:12Keep going, keep going, keep pushing.
00:44:14And they've just come through that middle sector of the track, David,
00:44:17the infield, where with the Honda running more wing than the Red Bull,
00:44:20that's where it's going to come alive.
00:44:22And as we just saw, closing up on the back of the Red Bull chassis.
00:44:25But now, if Red Bull's running less wing...
00:44:27Yeah, can't really draft him down that long straight.
00:44:29Whoa!
00:44:31Quickest in, but slower out, unfortunately.
00:44:33He had to lift off there.
00:44:34Now, look at the comparison here.
00:44:36If the Red Bull is running less wing than the Honda,
00:44:38and it looks like it from that shot to me,
00:44:40you should start to see the Red Bull try and open up a little bit of a gap.
00:44:43Unfortunately, that's the last place that Button wants to see him open up a gap,
00:44:47because this turn here, turn one, is really your best opportunity to overtake.
00:44:51So, up is Kubica.
00:44:53Kubica is in.
00:44:54Here we are.
00:44:55Lap number 17.
00:45:01Meanwhile, Kimi Räikkönen has got an information.
00:45:02Look at those rear tyres.
00:45:03The white mark is gone, so that's your rear tyre degradation.
00:45:06A little wing adjustment on the car.
00:45:08Soft compound tyres on the car.
00:45:10Those look like scuffs.
00:45:11A lot of the teams used up many of their option tyres.
00:45:15In fact, Jenson Button had no fresh sets of the softer Bridgestone option to start this race.
00:45:20Here comes Rosberg.
00:45:22What tyres is he going to go into?
00:45:24Soft looks like the softs.
00:45:29Time ends beautifully.
00:45:30Pit stop.
00:45:35It doesn't help us to calculate how much fuel is in the car, unfortunately.
00:45:39Well, you can't be all things to all people, can you?
00:45:42Nelson Piquet pits from 13th.
00:45:49Rosberg. Kubica has already exited.
00:45:53Kimi Räikkönen chops fast lap to 134.224.
00:45:59Recall in Malaysia, where Räikkönen came in behind his teammate Massa,
00:46:04and leapfrogged him on the pit stop by loading less fuel into the car on his stop.
00:46:08Let's see if he tries that again.
00:46:14Yeah, what we don't know is how much more fuel, if any, Räikkönen has on board.
00:46:18We assume he has, but of course, Ferrari are not going to say how much fuel is in either of their chassis,
00:46:23and neither are the drivers.
00:46:24Massa, fast lap. He responds to Räikkönen's pushing time as well.
00:46:2834.3 last time through.
00:46:30It's off.
00:46:34Kubica is now behind Glock, so Kubica is now down in 11th spot.
00:46:39Let's see what happened to him.
00:46:45This is breaking point by a couple of inches, maybe.
00:46:47I'll tell you what, that out there is very, very dusty, and very rippless in that clag out there.
00:46:54This is what they call desert clag.
00:46:56Oh, Button and DC got together.
00:47:02I tell you, DC in his old age is proving very, very, very difficult to overtake.
00:47:06Well, and he's been going around with a long face all weekend.
00:47:09It looks like the red ball isn't badly hurt, but the Honda sure is.
00:47:12Yeah, he lost his wing.
00:47:13Front wing missing up the Honda.
00:47:15Now, Kimi is on his way to his stop.
00:47:17We're on board now with Massa picking up.
00:47:19Massa will be aware of this.
00:47:20The engineers will have told Massa that Kimi Räikkönen is now stuck behind the Honda and the red ball.
00:47:27This is a time when Massa is going to get best lap if he can.
00:47:30He's now 4.7 seconds.
00:47:32Here it is.
00:47:34We saw the Honda get too close to the red ball under braking before, and this time...
00:47:38Oh, boy.
00:47:41Ooh.
00:47:42Locked in a loving embrace of wheels.
00:47:46It looks like he decided...
00:47:47Subject is...
00:47:48Had a lot of gum this weekend.
00:47:52Oh, stop.
00:47:53Is the door open?
00:47:54Is it closed?
00:47:55Is it open?
00:47:56I guess it's closed.
00:47:58Boy, they're lucky to come away with as little damage as they had.
00:48:02And from above.
00:48:04Clonk.
00:48:06Well, David Kulzan, I have to say it.
00:48:09I mean, if you see a bloke hurtling down the inside who's obviously outbraked himself,
00:48:14the last thing you want to do is close the door, which is exactly what he did to Massa in Melbourne.
00:48:22David...
00:48:24I'm not sure.
00:48:25If the guy's out of control...
00:48:28Yeah, but this assumes that he can see him in the mirror.
00:48:30These are Adrian Newey mirrors, remember?
00:48:32I know they're a little bit closer to the cockpit, but, I mean, at that point,
00:48:35to look in those mirrors, you've got to move your head.
00:48:37He wouldn't be thinking of button, even dreaming of passing in there.
00:48:41That's not an overtaking place.
00:48:42I don't think we should give DC a hard time on that one.
00:48:44I would say Jenson left his braking too late and then went for a gap that really wasn't there.
00:48:48Yeah, and if I'd been the driver in front, knowing the gap wasn't there,
00:48:51I'd have let him through, because he'd have slid off anyway, probably.
00:48:54Well, you see the Ferrari mechanics, as the Honda came in for that nose change,
00:48:58the Ferrari mechanics are out in the pit lane waiting for their guys.
00:49:02Presumably, it's going to be Massa.
00:49:04Well, Raikkonen is the better-placed Ferrari driver in the championship,
00:49:08so one would think that pit protocol would dictate Massa pits first, but we'll see.
00:49:15Jenson Button, by the way, is a bit of a local favourite.
00:49:17He has a home here in Bahrain,
00:49:19and I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that this is a non-income taxing kingdom.
00:49:24So, Massa, 40.6.
00:49:26He was fastest through the middle sector and immediately, Raikkonen, 40.5.
00:49:31And he stays out.
00:49:33Raikkonen first in.
00:49:35Wow.
00:49:36That's a surprise.
00:49:39And Massa clicks off a 134.178.
00:49:47Another set of softs for the world champion.
00:49:52Ooh, a lot of fuel.
00:49:54A lot of fuel.
00:49:59Those were softs that came off Raikkonen's, right?
00:50:01So he does have to make another stop to switch to the other compound.
00:50:04Someone else pitting behind.
00:50:06It's Jarno Trulli pitting the Toyota.
00:50:09Fernando Alonso is also in.
00:50:12And Raikkonen gets out ahead of Robert Kubica.
00:50:17And Robert Kubica is trapped behind Timo Glock at the moment in the Toyota.
00:50:23Alonso.
00:50:28I thought Alonso would stay out longer than that.
00:50:30He was so much slower in Q3 and Q2.
00:50:33Well, I wonder whether or not...
00:50:34Because it could be because he's got those hard tyres.
00:50:36Well, and the rear wing being damaged.
00:50:38He's lost daffles on the back.
00:50:39It's probably the car sliding around at the back.
00:50:41And that tyre degradation has become an issue.
00:50:43You see, look at the big chunk missing out the back on that shot.
00:50:48It must be a stout wing if it could stand that mounting of the McLaren on it.
00:50:52Yeah, absolutely.
00:50:53Ripped the front off the McLaren, but obviously hasn't broken his wing.
00:50:56But he must be thinking about it.
00:50:57It must be in the back of his mind.
00:51:00Oh, is it game over for Button?
00:51:02Button over.
00:51:05Too much damage at the front.
00:51:07Too much damage at the front.
00:51:08And looking at the side pods on the floor.
00:51:10Here comes Massa for his stop now.
00:51:19BMW crew also in the pit lane for Nick Heidfeld.
00:51:21Oh, fast. Fast stop.
00:51:23About seven and a half seconds of fuel delivery time on Raikkonen's car.
00:51:26There are Raikkonen and Kubica on the map.
00:51:29Looks like...
00:51:30He'll get out.
00:51:31Oh, he'll get out well ahead.
00:51:32Well, so turnabout is fair play.
00:51:36This is Heidfeld's stop.
00:51:43There goes Massa back out.
00:51:45Here comes Weber.
00:51:47And here comes Raikkonen.
00:51:49Significantly less fuel going into Massa's chassis there as opposed to Raikkonen's.
00:51:55About six and a half, maybe a second difference in fuel delivery time alone.
00:52:01Heidfeld out ahead of Kubica.
00:52:03Oh, that's interesting.
00:52:06Kovalainen also is in the pits.
00:52:10As is Kulthar.
00:52:14Heidfeld rejoins in sixth.
00:52:19There is the order and who has stopped.
00:52:21Mark Weber moves up to second with a stop to make.
00:52:24Timo Glock fourth.
00:52:26Fisichella seventh.
00:52:27Barrichello eighth.
00:52:28They all have yet to stop.
00:52:30Kovalainen now down to ninth.
00:52:32Jarno Trulli tenth.
00:52:34Sebastian Borle eleventh.
00:52:35Haven't stopped yet.
00:52:36Niko Rosberg down to twelfth there.
00:52:38And Alonso thirteenth.
00:52:39But that will all change.
00:52:42Hamilton finally claws his way back to seventeenth spot.
00:52:45Still a long way down.
00:52:49Button is indeed done for the day.
00:52:50He becomes the second car out of the race.
00:52:54There's Kovalainen.
00:52:55Not much of a gap though between Masa Raikkonen and Kubica.
00:52:58Remember on Friday, the Ferraris were a full second clear of the field.
00:53:03Weber just dove into the pits there from P4.
00:53:10There's the Red Bull crew ready to go to work.
00:53:13And the cranks for the speed, Bryce.
00:53:14But no wing adjustment.
00:53:15No wing adjustment.
00:53:18There's been an interesting dichotomy between the attitudes of the Red Bull Renault drivers this weekend.
00:53:22David Coulthard has just been shaking his head all weekend.
00:53:25Mark Webber has been pretty much a fan of the car.
00:53:27He's been the one to go out and do it.
00:53:29And he's also the one to go out and do it.
00:53:31So it's going to be a race that's going to be a lot of fun.
00:53:33I think the Red Bulls have been doing a really good job of that.
00:53:36We're going to be seeing a lot of people's reactions to this race.
00:53:39He's just been shaking his head all weekend.
00:53:41Mark Webber has been pretty much business as usual.
00:53:44Make the car better.
00:53:45Get ready for the race.
00:53:46No problems.
00:53:47Yeah, you bring up a good point there, Bob.
00:53:49It comes a time in the weekend where you have to stop adjusting the car, playing with the
00:53:54car, typically as soon as qualifying starts now because there's so little you can do.
00:53:58Then it falls in the lap of the driver to make best use of the equipment that the team
00:54:02have given him.
00:54:03We can do no more as soon as qualifying starts.
00:54:05It's down to the driver's confidence.
00:54:08You got what you got.
00:54:09You got what you got.
00:54:10Exactly.
00:54:11Now, here's Hamilton catching up with Davidson.
00:54:17He's already very wisely.
00:54:19He's got Davidson.
00:54:20I think that's Sato ahead of him on the road and it looks like he'll deal with him in pretty
00:54:23quick order.
00:54:24He gave him plenty of room, but he nearly, nearly pitched that up.
00:54:28He went very wide going into that right hander.
00:54:32Now there's Sato.
00:54:33That was Davidson he was getting by.
00:54:35Right.
00:54:36That was for 16th place as Hamilton continues to try to work his way forward.
00:54:43He has not made a pit stop, has Lewis Hamilton, other than that emergency stop for the new
00:54:47front wing after running into the back of Alonso on lap one.
00:54:51Yeah, I mean, he did take fuel on board during that pit stop.
00:54:54Of course, we don't know how much fuel he had on board before.
00:54:57So gauging his pit stop now, Hamilton, well, we're second guessing.
00:55:01Now he's got the soft tires on, but you don't see much white line on the rear tires.
00:55:05We're going to take a break and return to Bahrain.
00:55:07Stay with us.
00:55:20Approaching the halfway point at the Grand Prix of Bahrain.
00:55:24Live here on speed with Peter Windsor, David Hobbs and Steve Matchett, I'm Bob Varsha.
00:55:29And Timo Glockhoff, that stop came out in front of Alonso, so Alonso won't be too happy
00:55:34with that, I've no doubt.
00:55:35And there is Nico Rosberg just disappearing from view, so it's going to be interesting
00:55:38to see now if Timo Glock can wind in Rosberg's car.
00:55:42Sebastian Bordet also pitted during the commercial break.
00:55:44He rejoins in 18th place, last unlapped car.
00:55:50Anthony Davidson pits from 16th, leaving Kaz Nakajima and Takuma Sato, the only cars that
00:55:58have not called at the pits yet.
00:56:02Looking at the damage on Alonso's car there on the rear wing and looking at Alonso's time,
00:56:06he's still setting competitive times.
00:56:0935.8 for Alonso last time through the speed trap, 35.8 for Rosberg.
00:56:14So the competitive times, I'm sure the aerodynamicists are back in Leafield in Oxford scratching
00:56:20their heads thinking, you know, you can't be doing this.
00:56:22We could be trimming so much more downforce off the car in the first place.
00:56:25Well, I mean, just losing that fence like that must make a heck of a difference.
00:56:29Absolutely.
00:56:30Yeah.
00:56:32It's not fair in the first place.
00:56:33Exactly.
00:56:34How much of a blackout is aerodynamics even today?
00:56:36It's there because the computer told us it should be.
00:56:39What was that race in Monza when he lost absolutely everything off that car and the under tray
00:56:47was smashed, the wing was broken and he still finished 8th.
00:56:50Well, that's the Formula One of the future.
00:56:54About half of the downforce on these cars comes off under new rules next year, along
00:56:59with the kinetic energy recovery systems that all of the teams are working hard now.
00:57:04They're going to take the energy produced in braking and the thermal energy from the
00:57:08engine and try to produce electrical energy to help propel the cars.
00:57:12That should be pretty fascinating.
00:57:17There's Jensen Button saying, thank you very much.
00:57:20I don't think it hasn't been great because it hasn't been going home.
00:57:23Got a very short drive home, unlike everybody else.
00:57:27Here comes Massa, cruising serenely along for now, and that gap is just five seconds.
00:57:34Now looking at the gap, the fuel times between these two cars now, I think Raikkonen should
00:57:39be good to go to around lap 44, Massa to lap 42.
00:57:43So Raikkonen now has around two laps more fuel on board.
00:57:47Now Raikkonen's best strength here, his best strategy is to push, push, push after his
00:57:51teammate and see if he can pressure Massa, see if he can make it fall off the island.
00:57:56Well, we've seen him do that at the last race, under pressure, that Massa can lose control
00:58:02of the car.
00:58:03Again, this is going to be close.
00:58:04We need to watch the lap times now, as you were saying, it's like 5.1 seconds on lap
00:58:0826.
00:58:09Massa just sets fast first sector time, but the race between Massa and Raikkonen will
00:58:13get very interesting towards his second pit stop window around lap 40.
00:58:18Checking the gap between the two BMW Sauber teammates, Kubica and Heidfeld.
00:58:30I was talking to one of the senior BMW engineers last night, and he wouldn't like me to mention
00:58:35his name, so I really won't do that.
00:58:36It was in confidence, but he said, we are just so thrilled with what they've achieved
00:58:40so far, and I asked him, what do you think is going to happen in the races?
00:58:43Look, we're not yet in a position to be fighting for the race lead.
00:58:46We're just thrilled to be where we are, and again, we are making steady progress, we're
00:58:50loving it, but don't look out for any great surprise result in the race.
00:58:54Well, small victories, little incremental steps.
00:58:56Sure.
00:58:57Heidfeld is the only non-McLaren driver who's completed every lap so far in 08.
00:59:02He has been Mr. Below the Radar thus far this year.
00:59:06He has a chance to lead the World Championship after this race, if the planets all align.
00:59:11It's a long shot, but he could be the World Championship leader without ever winning a
00:59:15Grand Prix.
00:59:16Your next stop is target minus one.
00:59:17Rothsberg and Trulli both one lap shorter.
00:59:18And if Nick Heidfeld were to do that, he'd be only the third man ever to do it.
00:59:30One was Lewis Hamilton last year, and the other is Jean Bera back in 1956.
00:59:36There's Mark Webber from Australia.
00:59:43Adrian Sutil is now pitting.
00:59:44We'll take this opportunity for a break and return.
00:59:49Welcome back to Bahrain.
00:59:52Lewis Hamilton drawing ever closer to Giancarlo Fisichella.
00:59:56In the battle for 13th, there you see the gap.
00:59:59I guess you don't need those numbers to know Hamilton is close, and this is where the turbulence
01:00:05behind the car ahead begins to affect Formula 1 cars.
01:00:09Yeah, but it's also beginning to affect Fisichella, the pressure, because we've seen him make
01:00:12two or a couple of little mistakes on that lap, so obviously the fact that Hamilton's
01:00:15right behind in 4th position is upsetting him somewhat.
01:00:19His Grand Prix of Bahrain was where Lewis Hamilton took the lead of the World Championship
01:00:25last year, and he basically was in the lead or had a share of the lead in every race since,
01:00:32with the exception of Brazil last year, when, of course, he went off track and lost the
01:00:35World Championship to Kimi Räikkönen by a point.
01:00:37Ah, got a good tow here, got a good tow, comes up, and here he goes, administers the
01:00:41El Coupe de Grace.
01:00:43Rear grip, Lewis, rear grip.
01:00:45Woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah.
01:00:48Now that was fascinating, watching the two cars lurch forward, depending on when each
01:00:53driver kind of eased up on the brakes a little bit.
01:00:56And he closes the door for making sure that Fisichella doesn't slide down the inside at
01:01:00turn 3.
01:01:01Who needs driver aids?
01:01:02That's on another lap.
01:01:03Down the inside, very good positioning.
01:01:04Now here you think he's just going to blow right by him.
01:01:05Oh, he gave him a wave then.
01:01:06Yeah.
01:01:08I think it was the old single-digit salute.
01:01:09Well, you both fought even position, Lewis.
01:01:10Just get on with it.
01:01:11That's for position.
01:01:12I mean, there's none of this, and you mentioned it earlier, David.
01:01:13This is Formula 1.
01:01:14Every position matters.
01:01:15There's none of this, OK, you're quicker, you go by.
01:01:16I'm not racing until the last 10 laps.
01:01:17Just points, points go down to 8 now, so, you know, it's not a big deal.
01:01:18It's not a big deal.
01:01:19It's not a big deal.
01:01:20It's not a big deal.
01:01:21It's not a big deal.
01:01:22It's not a big deal.
01:01:23It's not a big deal.
01:01:24It's not a big deal.
01:01:25It's not a big deal.
01:01:26It's not a big deal.
01:01:27It's not a big deal.
01:01:28It's not a big deal.
01:01:29It's not a big deal.
01:01:30It's not a big deal.
01:01:31It's not a big deal.
01:01:32It's not a big deal.
01:01:33It's not a big deal.
01:01:34It's not a big deal.
01:01:35It's not a big deal.
01:01:36It's not a big deal.
01:01:37It's not a big deal.
01:01:38It's not a big deal.
01:01:39It's not a big deal.
01:01:40It's not a big deal.
01:01:41It's not a big deal.
01:01:42It's not a big deal.
01:01:43It's not a big deal.
01:01:44It's not a big deal.
01:01:45It's not a big deal.
01:01:46It's not a big deal.
01:01:47It's not a big deal.
01:01:48It's not a big deal.
01:01:49It's not a big deal.
01:01:50It's not a big deal.
01:01:51It's not a big deal.
01:01:52It's not a big deal.
01:01:53It's not a big deal.
01:01:54It's not a big deal.
01:01:55It's not a big deal.
01:01:56It's not a big deal.
01:01:57It's not a big deal.
01:01:58It's not a big deal.
01:01:59It's not a big deal.
01:02:00It's not a big deal.
01:02:01It's not a big deal.
01:02:02It's not a big deal.
01:02:03It's not a big deal.
01:02:04It's not a big deal.
01:02:05It's not a big deal.
01:02:06It's not a big deal.
01:02:07It's not a big deal.
01:02:08It's not a big deal.
01:02:09It's not a big deal.
01:02:10It's not a big deal.
01:02:11It's not a big deal.
01:02:12It's not a big deal.
01:02:13It's not a big deal.
01:02:14It's not a big deal.
01:02:15It's not a big deal.
01:02:16Yeah.
01:02:17Well, they'll need some tyres after all that.
01:02:18They'll probably need a bit of fuel at some stage to keep going.
01:02:22Rips away a tear off.
01:02:25Let's see if he goes to the hard tyre.
01:02:28Now, all the way down the pit lane, McLaren have now been put right at the bottom of the pit lane,
01:02:34actually where they should have been placed at the start of the season.
01:02:36Remember, garage position is set on constructors' position from last year,
01:02:41so as they were thrown out, they absolutely should be at the bottom of the pit lane.
01:02:44First two races, they started about garage five,
01:02:47but then there were so many complaints that eventually they were moved down.
01:02:51Raikkonen posts another fast lap.
01:02:53Second straight lap, 1.34.062.
01:02:56This is very good.
01:02:57And Massa sets his personal best lap, 3.40.096.
01:03:01And you're right, Bob.
01:03:02Raikkonen, 3.40.062.
01:03:04And he's lapped Hamilton, who's now about to upset and hold up Kimi Raikkonen.
01:03:08Kimi Raikkonen.
01:03:13You don't think.
01:03:16See all the rubber build up offline.
01:03:19Ah, the old desert cloud building up there.
01:03:23Well, we'll give Hamilton a moment to catch up to his old rival, Kimi Raikkonen.
01:03:27We're going to take a break.
01:03:28There's the Ferrari flashing by at the exit to the pits.
01:03:31Stand by for more from Bahrain.
01:03:35You've seen the race.
01:03:36Now, find out what really happened this weekend.
01:03:40Back deep in the second half of round three of the 2008 Formula One season,
01:03:44the Grand Prix of Bahrain.
01:03:47Here's a look at Lewis Hamilton leading Kimi Raikkonen.
01:03:52And then in replay, you'll see him.
01:03:54There he goes, pulling aside and allowing the Ferrari through.
01:03:58And we'll see how much, if any, Lewis Hamilton held up.
01:04:03Kimi Raikkonen, who at this point is focusing entirely on the race leader,
01:04:07his Ferrari teammate, Felipe Massa, who just reset fast lap
01:04:12as that intramural fight goes on.
01:04:14Here's Nelson Piquet on the radio.
01:04:17Which tire do you prefer, Nelson? This one or the previous one?
01:04:27This one.
01:04:29He has the choice because Nelson Piquet started on the hard tyre.
01:04:33You have to use both compounds of tyre.
01:04:35And as you can see, the Renault chassis now running on the soft compound tyre.
01:04:39That gives, again, it's good information now to see how close the tyre choice is.
01:04:43The engineers are saying, well, you know, guys,
01:04:45we can't really see an awful lot between us.
01:04:47Down to the driver. What do you want?
01:04:48You can use either or at this stage of the race.
01:04:53Raikkonen has suffered a little bit.
01:04:55Raikkonen has suffered a little bit, Bob, looking at that lap time.
01:04:58The gap now 4.1. It did come down to 3.8
01:05:01with Raikkonen being stuck behind the McLaren there as he was.
01:05:05It's now got up to 4.1, that gap.
01:05:13On board with Jarno Trulli in sixth place
01:05:16as he comes around to complete lap 36 here of 57 in the Grand Prix of Bahrain.
01:05:22Here is Heikki Kovalainen, currently in fifth place.
01:05:26Wow.
01:05:27Kimi Raikkonen responds just saying that the gap went up to 4.1.
01:05:31Kimi Raikkonen fastest lap again, 33.7.
01:05:34He made 0.6 up on that one lap.
01:05:37And that's the sort of thing that's going to upset Felipe Massa,
01:05:40who knows that's what's going on behind him.
01:05:42Well, if we think that Raikkonen has got two laps more fuel on board,
01:05:46that equates roughly to five and a half kilos,
01:05:48say 10, 10, 11 pounds of extra weight.
01:05:50That should equate on pure lap time.
01:05:52Massa should be in equal equipment, 0.3 a lap faster than his teammate,
01:05:57in equal equipment.
01:05:58That's the difference that it should make.
01:06:00Massa should be faster by 0.3.
01:06:02So you're right, he will be upsetting him,
01:06:04because Raikkonen, if he has got that extra fuel,
01:06:06carrying the extra weight penalty for that,
01:06:08Raikkonen absolutely outdriving Massa right now in terms of lap time.
01:06:15No driver has finished on the podium
01:06:17in both of the first two rounds of the 08 season.
01:06:20It appears, the way things stand right now,
01:06:22we'll get another shuffling of the leaderboard.
01:06:24If Felipe Massa can hold on,
01:06:26he's already gone farther than he did in either of the first two races of the year,
01:06:30looking for his second straight win here in Bahrain.
01:06:34And if he can get it,
01:06:35it'll be the first time he's won in his career
01:06:37when he wasn't starting from pole.
01:06:39That's true. That's a very good point.
01:06:42Kimi Raikkonen now behind Nakajima.
01:06:45And that may have explained some of that gap there on that last lap,
01:06:49because Massa was struggling to get around Nakajima.
01:06:51I'm sure that the Ferrari will...
01:06:53Here we go.
01:06:54All right. There you are.
01:06:55There we are. Well...
01:06:56Will he or what? No.
01:06:58Oh boy, that will upset the lad.
01:07:01Although he's pretty cool in a situation like that.
01:07:06The gap, 3.3 seconds.
01:07:08Once again, we expect Massa to pit first,
01:07:11as Kazoo, as David has now dubbed him,
01:07:14pulls aside in favor of Raikkonen.
01:07:22Meanwhile, Massa...
01:07:24Purple in Sector 1 by 6 tenths.
01:07:26Absolutely. 30 dead in Sector 1.
01:07:2930.6 for Raikkonen in Sector 1.
01:07:32So that's Kazoo getting in the way.
01:07:34Thank you, Kazoo.
01:07:36Speaking of Williams Toyotas,
01:07:39and we were,
01:07:40this is Rosberg in eighth.
01:07:44Option again for the last step.
01:07:50Oh, this could end it.
01:07:52Nico, just confirm, you want to go option again?
01:07:56Option.
01:07:57Copy that, Nico. Copy that. Push hard now.
01:08:00Option, option, option.
01:08:01This is Glock and Alonso.
01:08:05This is for ninth place.
01:08:06Alonso trying to get up into the points.
01:08:09This is very important, because this is for P9,
01:08:12which obviously is only one place away from the points.
01:08:15If Alonso doesn't get into the points here in Bahrain,
01:08:18it'll be the first time, or second time,
01:08:20in the last 23 races that Alonso has not scored a point.
01:08:25And you can see what he's struggling with.
01:08:27Oh, he's mad, yeah.
01:08:28He's never been happy about having guys ahead of him on the road, but...
01:08:31Guys, while we're watching this battle,
01:08:33I'm just going to keep you appraised of what's happening up front
01:08:35with the two Ferrari chassis.
01:08:37Massa, fastest in Sector 1, 30 dead.
01:08:40Raikkonen responds fastest in Sector 2, 40.3.
01:08:430.1 faster over his teammate in Sector 2.
01:08:47These guys are absolutely pushing neck and neck now.
01:08:50But Raikkonen lost half a second to Massa on that last lap
01:08:55when he was stuck behind the Williams of Kaz...
01:08:59Nakajima.
01:09:02Fernando Alonso supposedly has an out clause in his Renault contract
01:09:06that might allow him to take a better drive next year,
01:09:08if one is available.
01:09:10We'll be back.
01:09:15Welcome back to Bahrain.
01:09:16Not much has happened as you watch the Ferrari boys
01:09:18getting ready for a pit stop,
01:09:19except Kimi Raikkonen pitted his Ferrari.
01:09:22Nelson Piquet went off the road,
01:09:24trying to avoid Lewis Hamilton.
01:09:27And now we expect Felipe Massa in.
01:09:29And notice that red box to the right of your screen.
01:09:31You'll notice the Ferrari crew does not use a lollipop
01:09:34to send the driver on his way.
01:09:36Those are lights.
01:09:37Now, about five and a half, six seconds of fuel
01:09:40is all that's needed in Massa's car.
01:09:42You're right, Bob.
01:09:43Raikkonen came in early, around five laps early
01:09:46to what we had him down for a pit stop window.
01:09:48So, perhaps his tyres giving up.
01:09:51He was on the soft tyres.
01:09:52He's now gone on to the harder tyres in that final stint
01:09:55or track position.
01:09:56But something happened to change Raikkonen's strategy slightly.
01:09:59It was five laps away from where we had him.
01:10:01We're usually pretty accurate with Ferrari stops.
01:10:06Massa comes out well in front.
01:10:08Yeah, a response to Raikkonen's stop.
01:10:11Sebastian Bordet and Adrian Sutil
01:10:13also made their second and third stops, respectively.
01:10:18As Massa pitted and resumes comfortably.
01:10:20Massa's pit stop earlier than we predicted.
01:10:24But that would be in response to Raikkonen.
01:10:26Now, Massa's engineers can change their strategy
01:10:29to look after their tyres.
01:10:30Remember, tyre degradation is something
01:10:32we were talking about yesterday.
01:10:33That lead in the fuel strategy.
01:10:35I think what happened there,
01:10:36Massa's engineers responded to Raikkonen pitting early.
01:10:39It may be that both of these guys were struggling.
01:10:41Raikkonen having all kinds of trouble
01:10:43with the Super Aguri Hondas.
01:10:45Just catching them in the wrong places.
01:10:47There's no bad driving involved, I don't think.
01:10:52Can't expect cars to just levitate out of your way.
01:10:54No, exactly. It's just the luck of the draw.
01:10:57Something dragging at the left rear corner,
01:10:59that rear wing.
01:11:00Saw the tear-off off of one of the visors,
01:11:02a little bit of helicopter tape that they used to
01:11:05just seal the wing.
01:11:06Kubica, he won for now.
01:11:09But he won't be when he makes that pit stop.
01:11:18Box, box, box.
01:11:19They're probably telling him over the radio.
01:11:21How about this?
01:11:22BMW Sauber now running 1st and 2nd
01:11:24for the first time ever.
01:11:26That is very cool.
01:11:28And of course, Kubica led 8 laps in Malaysia,
01:11:31which was the first lap he'd ever led.
01:11:33So...
01:11:39Kubica led 8 laps in Malaysia,
01:11:41not the first time that he had led,
01:11:43but certainly the longest stretch in the race history.
01:11:46I think he's going to win.
01:11:48Not the first time that he had led,
01:11:50but certainly the longest stretch in the race lead
01:11:52for a BMW Sauber.
01:11:54And they've come close before.
01:11:56Recall, was it China last year
01:11:58where Kubica led briefly and then the car let him down?
01:12:01Obviously, moving forward.
01:12:05Next lap, we should start to see the BMW guys come in.
01:12:08We're now under 5 seconds of fuel delivery.
01:12:10We'll get in the rest of the race distance.
01:12:12Nico Rosberg pits from 8th.
01:12:14Earlier I said that Masa resumed to the race lead.
01:12:16That's after the pit stop cycle through.
01:12:21Right now, the order is Kubica, Heidfeld,
01:12:23then Masa and Raikkonen in the Ferraris.
01:12:25Heikki Kovalainen having a quiet race in 5th place.
01:12:28That's where he started.
01:12:30It really hasn't changed much over the last 40 laps.
01:12:32What's amazing about him is he is consistently slower
01:12:35than Trulli behind him.
01:12:37Not going like the McLaren should be going at all.
01:12:42Both Kovalainen and Trulli have only made one stop.
01:12:47Maybe the tire is going away from the McLaren.
01:12:51There we go. Kubica pits.
01:12:534.8 seconds of fuel is all we need in the BMW chassis.
01:12:57Get Kubica to the rest of the race distance.
01:13:01Heidfeld takes over the race lead.
01:13:03Another thing the BMW Saubers have never done
01:13:05is put both cars on the podium.
01:13:09Good to go.
01:13:10It's ending, boys.
01:13:11There goes Masa's car on the diagram.
01:13:13There goes Masa.
01:13:16He'll take over when Heidfeld pits.
01:13:20Mark Webber is 7th.
01:13:21Niko Rosberg just resuming from his pit.
01:13:25We'll see where he joins.
01:13:27Timo Glock will move up into 8th.
01:13:29Rubens Barichella 10th.
01:13:30Fernando Alonso back in 12th.
01:13:32Lewis Hamilton now in 14th place and a lap down.
01:13:39Robert Kubica is a great story.
01:13:41Coming from Poland where they don't have
01:13:43a terrific racing support system and ladder system.
01:13:47It's difficult for a young driver to dream
01:13:49of going to Formula 1.
01:13:51So Kubica took the bull by the horn, so to speak.
01:13:54Moved elsewhere in Europe.
01:13:57There's David Coulthard pitting the red bull.
01:14:01Kubica spent a lot of time living on his own in Italy,
01:14:04chasing his racing dream.
01:14:08Eventually caught the attention of the right people.
01:14:10And here he is in Formula 1.
01:14:12He has his first pole position.
01:14:14And a great future ahead of him.
01:14:16Peter Windsor.
01:14:17Well, Bob, yeah, you're absolutely right.
01:14:19And he's a good guy as well because he's different.
01:14:22He doesn't take the Formula 1 stereotype.
01:14:24Guess what he was seen doing last night
01:14:26under a round table, sitting around a round table
01:14:28with a big light ahead with Nick Heidfeld,
01:14:30Antonio Luzzi and Colin Collis.
01:14:32He was playing poker.
01:14:34That's what race drivers do the night before a race.
01:14:37Good on him.
01:14:38Good on him.
01:14:41Takes your focus away for a while.
01:14:43Let you decompress a bit.
01:14:47Well, Piquet, who moved aside,
01:14:50letting Hamilton through and then mysteriously,
01:14:52we watched it during a commercial break,
01:14:54came back on track and immediately pulled off again
01:14:57with warning lights all over his steering wheel.
01:14:59I'm not sure what happened there.
01:15:01Mark Webber pits from seventh
01:15:03as you go on board with Anthony Davidson.
01:15:09Anthony Davidson, this stage,
01:15:11trying to get around his teammate, Takuma Sato,
01:15:13in front of him there.
01:15:14I think he is quicker,
01:15:15but obviously these cars are very, very, very evenly matched.
01:15:19Now, we should keep our eye on Kubica's lap times.
01:15:22He was stuck in traffic.
01:15:24Now, keep your eye on Kubica's time.
01:15:26If he's stuck in traffic...
01:15:27He's just done the fastest first sector.
01:15:29Yeah, exactly.
01:15:30This is going to be a battle to see which BMW chassis
01:15:33or which BMW driver, I should say,
01:15:35ends up on the podium here.
01:15:36Well, Robert Kubica just went purple in sector one.
01:15:42As he tries to haul himself back up.
01:15:46Another day full of hard lessons
01:15:48for the son of a three-time world champion.
01:15:59The gap between the two BMW drivers right now,
01:16:0221 seconds.
01:16:03It is going to be close.
01:16:04Very close.
01:16:05Yes.
01:16:07Heidfeld needs to get a good lap in here.
01:16:1333.7 last lap.
01:16:14Yeah, as we see now,
01:16:15Heidfeld, as his engineers get on to him now,
01:16:17you're going to have to push if you want that third step.
01:16:20Third step on the podium.
01:16:2221 seconds is the gap.
01:16:2333.798, his personal best
01:16:25and fastest in the third sector.
01:16:2723.1 as Heidfeld tries to respond to Kubica's pace.
01:16:31Jarno Trulli makes his second and final stop
01:16:33from 6th place.
01:16:34Giancarlo Fisichella, the same.
01:16:37Rubens Barrichello also.
01:16:45Pretty quick, yeah.
01:16:48So little wheel spin.
01:16:49Yeah.
01:16:50Zing.
01:16:53Heidfeld once again in the lead.
01:16:556.2 seconds over Massa.
01:16:5713.7 seconds.
01:16:596.2 seconds over Massa.
01:17:0113 seconds over Raikkonen.
01:17:0316.5 over Kovalainen.
01:17:05Kubica responding to Heidfeld's pace.
01:17:07He said his personal best as well.
01:17:09Only a couple of tenths between these drivers now.
01:17:14Kubica's lighter.
01:17:15Excuse me.
01:17:16Kubica's heavier.
01:17:17Remember that.
01:17:18Kubica is 21.3 seconds behind his teammate.
01:17:22There he is.
01:17:24As Heidfeld contemplates his next stop
01:17:26with 14 laps to go.
01:17:28Heidfeld fastest in sector 2.
01:17:3040.2.
01:17:32Wow.
01:17:33But he's coming into traffic now.
01:17:34That's Nakajima, which actually could...
01:17:37Well, it could work for him.
01:17:38It could give him a good tow.
01:17:40Stays out again.
01:17:41Heidfeld stays out.
01:17:42I guess he assumes he can get a little bit more time in the bank
01:17:45and burn off a little more fuel,
01:17:46shortening up that stop,
01:17:48battling his teammate for the final podium position.
01:17:51But if he catches up with these two cars in front,
01:17:53that could rather destroy this lap.
01:17:56That makes you wonder why he chose to stay out.
01:17:58Yeah.
01:17:5933.9 was Heidfeld's last lap.
01:18:0133.9.
01:18:03We're waiting for Kubica to go through.
01:18:0533.986, Kubica.
01:18:0733.91, Heidfeld.
01:18:0933.98, Kubica.
01:18:1140.2.
01:18:12Wow, they're setting good times.
01:18:16The gap stays almost exactly the same.
01:18:1821.3.
01:18:20But of course...
01:18:21Nakajima gives him plenty of room there.
01:18:22That was good.
01:18:23As we've said in previous races,
01:18:25it all comes down now to fuel delivery time.
01:18:27Every lap that Heidfeld could stand out and stay out for,
01:18:30remain out on track,
01:18:32well, it cuts down the fuel delivery time,
01:18:34so it'll make the pit stop that much shorter.
01:18:37Timo Glock pits the other Toyota from 6th.
01:18:40Anthony Davidson pits it out in the Super Aguri.
01:18:45Only three cars out of the race.
01:18:47Piquet, Button, and Vettel.
01:18:51Compare that with Australia,
01:18:53where there is very little runoff.
01:18:55Well, there was only six cars left.
01:18:57Right, only six cars saw the checkered flag there.
01:19:02Yet Heidfeld.
01:19:04With a typically quiet race,
01:19:06wouldn't it be something if he took the lead in the World Championship,
01:19:09still looking for his first ever victory?
01:19:13There he goes.
01:19:14Yeah, now this is going to be really tight.
01:19:16He must take tires.
01:19:17Fuel delivery time, I estimate at 3.5 seconds.
01:19:20That is just about the same time as it takes
01:19:22to change four wheels and tires on an F1.
01:19:24This is going to be a quick stop.
01:19:26Keep an eye on Kubica's car in the graphic.
01:19:29Just making the final corner.
01:19:31On to the front straightaway.
01:19:32As his teammate rolls, I think...
01:19:35Wow!
01:19:36I think Heidfeld may have...
01:19:37No, I don't think so.
01:19:38Here comes Kubica, who will go by.
01:19:42Into third place.
01:19:45Well, was it the traffic?
01:19:46He just needed a few more tenths here and there.
01:19:48But still, another great day for BMW Sauber.
01:19:51Yeah, it is.
01:19:52Well, it's a bit of everything, you know,
01:19:53and it all boils down to qualifying.
01:19:55If Heidfeld had qualified just a little bit better,
01:19:57you know, Kubica's on the pole,
01:19:58Heidfeld was sixth.
01:19:59And you could say, really,
01:20:00that battle was won yesterday afternoon.
01:20:05Still need to see a pit stop from Heikki Kovalainen,
01:20:09who is currently in third place.
01:20:12Jarno Trulli and Webber just turned in
01:20:14their best laps of the day for themselves.
01:20:1634.2 and a 34.5.
01:20:18That's pretty good times.
01:20:20This class is just on a 34.7.
01:20:22Going by Lewis Hamilton.
01:20:28Here comes Kovalainen.
01:20:32Right behind Kimi Räikkönen, but he...
01:20:34Whoa!
01:20:35His rear tire's a shot.
01:20:36You can see the white line's gone completely.
01:20:38Yeah.
01:20:39His rear tire's a shot.
01:20:40You can see the white line's gone completely off his rears.
01:20:43He's not trying to stretch him to the finish,
01:20:45I don't think.
01:20:48He's gonna need fuel.
01:20:55Temperature about 90 degrees Fahrenheit,
01:20:58but more importantly to the race cars,
01:21:00very low humidity here,
01:21:02which means the air doesn't cool as well
01:21:04as it does in a high humidity place like Malaysia.
01:21:10Okay.
01:21:11Kovalainen stays out.
01:21:12We'll take a break and return.
01:21:14Eleven laps to go in the Grand Prix of Bahrain
01:21:17here on Speed.
01:21:26Welcome back with impeccable timing
01:21:28as we went to break.
01:21:29Genki Kovalainen hit the pit lane
01:21:31for his final stop from third place.
01:21:35Meanwhile, Robert Kubica
01:21:37and Kimi Raikkonen is the gap we're watching right now.
01:21:40Kubica has been taking time off the second-place Ferrari
01:21:43lap after lap
01:21:45as we will have nine to go
01:21:47next time race leader Felipe Massa
01:21:49passes the start-finish.
01:21:52On board with Barrichello,
01:21:53trying to get around Alonso.
01:21:55This is for tenth.
01:21:58Like I say, with ten laps to go, a lot can happen.
01:22:01People, DNF, drop out, crash.
01:22:03There you can see how much ground room
01:22:05is making up on the Renault.
01:22:07Of course, even though the race for tenth,
01:22:09I mean, just a couple of spots up the road
01:22:11is that last point.
01:22:18But a long dry spell for Rubens Barrichello.
01:22:22Didn't score a point last year,
01:22:24the first time pretty much ever he's done.
01:22:27Heidfeld, fastest lap of the race,
01:22:2933.565.
01:22:32Trailing his teammate by 4.8 seconds.
01:22:35So I don't think those Ferraris will respond to that.
01:22:38They don't have to.
01:22:40Which would mean that Heidfeld has the fastest lap
01:22:42in the last two races,
01:22:43which would be the first for Saab and BMW.
01:22:47Kubica, his last lap was a 33.8.
01:22:50Yeah, both the Ferraris.
01:22:51Not exactly hanging around.
01:22:52Both the Ferraris, Massa and Raikkonen,
01:22:54last time through the trap, 34.8 for Massa,
01:22:5734.7 for Raikkonen.
01:22:59You're right, the two BMWs,
01:23:00they're scrapping it out, 33.8.
01:23:03Interesting battle here.
01:23:04It'll be the first time in forever
01:23:05that Alonso has finished out of the points.
01:23:07Rubens Barrichello hasn't been in the points
01:23:10in his last 20 races.
01:23:12The order is Massa and Raikkonen in the Ferraris,
01:23:15then Kubica and Heidfeld in the BMW Saubers,
01:23:18then Heikki Kovalainen in the first of the McLaren Mercedes,
01:23:21Jarno Trulli is sixth in the Toyota,
01:23:23Mark Webber's Red Bull Renault seventh,
01:23:25Nico Rosberg in the Williams Toyota Eighth,
01:23:28followed by the factory Toyota Timo Glock,
01:23:31Fernando Alonso tenth,
01:23:32this man Rubens Barrichello is eleventh,
01:23:35then Giancarlo Fisichella,
01:23:37Kaz Nakajima, Lewis Hamilton fourteenth,
01:23:40and it appears that's where he will stay.
01:23:42He's just not making up enough time, anything like.
01:23:45Sebastian Bordet is fifteenth,
01:23:47Anthony Davidson and Takuma Sato sixteenth and seventeenth,
01:23:50then David Coulthard and Adrian Sutil,
01:23:53the last two cars still running.
01:23:55I thought Hamilton would at least make it into the points.
01:23:57Just.
01:23:59It's been done before there.
01:24:00Look at the gap between Kubica and Raikkonen,
01:24:02coming down in big chunks.
01:24:05Obviously, Raikkonen is fully aware of that.
01:24:07There's only eight laps left.
01:24:09I'm sure he feels he's in control of the situation,
01:24:11unless he's got a problem,
01:24:12which of course we wouldn't know about.
01:24:14They're just coming to a picture with Nick Heidfeld.
01:24:16The only thing that makes me think they may have a problem,
01:24:18they may be concerned,
01:24:19was that early pit stop that Raikkonen had.
01:24:21And all the other pit stops have kind of played out
01:24:23within a lap of where we think.
01:24:25But Raikkonen did pit five laps early.
01:24:27They were setting fast time.
01:24:29They were setting fast lap times,
01:24:30Massa and Raikkonen between them.
01:24:32I just don't know whether or not they were concerned about tire wear
01:24:34or maybe the ratcheting down on the engine.
01:24:36Because remember,
01:24:37this is the second race cycle of these engines in the Ferraris.
01:24:40Perhaps there's a problem.
01:24:42Not sure.
01:24:43Hickey Kovalainen just lit the afterburner.
01:24:45Four tenths quicker than anybody else in the race on that lap.
01:24:49133.193.
01:24:51If you watch Robert Kubica,
01:24:53helmet popping up as the braking G-forces throw him forward
01:24:57and then settling back in the seat.
01:24:59And Robert Kubica is a little bit taller than most of these guys.
01:25:02Kimi Raikkonen is relatively tall,
01:25:04but of course they are generally on the short side.
01:25:07But you've got to hand it to Kubica.
01:25:09He managed to lose about 14 pounds of weight
01:25:12to help the team.
01:25:14That is amazing.
01:25:15And I mean, for a guy that's as skinny as he is,
01:25:17how he did that and not lose muscle,
01:25:19Massa, God knows how he did it.
01:25:21I can't lose three, can I?
01:25:23Fourteen.
01:25:24Well, the big benefit to the team,
01:25:26and you're right, the team and the driver and the car are weighed together
01:25:29to come up with that 600 kilo figure.
01:25:31But the advantage to the engineers
01:25:33is it's 14 pounds they can move around the car
01:25:36to play with the weight distribution.
01:25:37Not just sitting around the driver's gut.
01:25:39They can put it wherever they want.
01:25:40What do you mean driver's gut?
01:25:43Peter Windsor, help.
01:25:46David, actually, Robert says that he did actually lose
01:25:49quite a lot of muscle mass.
01:25:50It wasn't fat.
01:25:51It was muscle mass that he lost,
01:25:52which makes that drive in Malaysia even better.
01:25:54And when you consider the heat,
01:25:55and he wasn't actually feeling that well either,
01:25:57whether it was because he'd lost all that weight,
01:25:59but he did say he had some sort of stomach bug.
01:26:01So a fantastic performance.
01:26:03And a well judged race today, too.
01:26:05I wonder if he's still thinking about Kimi
01:26:06passing him on the outside into turn one
01:26:08as he chases Kimi now down to the line.
01:26:10Yes, I suspect he is.
01:26:12Yeah.
01:26:14Seven laps to go.
01:26:17Lewis Hamilton watching his mirrors
01:26:19off to the driver's left there,
01:26:20making way for Raikkonen.
01:26:23Not a happy day for Lewis Hamilton.
01:26:27In fact, after winning the opener in Australia,
01:26:29his race in Malaysia wasn't much to write home about either.
01:26:33McLaren have work to do in the break before Spain.
01:26:36And now...
01:26:37How much high speed are you?
01:26:39I've lost a lot of speed.
01:26:42Five laps remaining in round three
01:26:44of the 2008 Formula 1 season here on Speed.
01:26:46The Grand Prix of Bahrain.
01:26:48There's Ross Brawn, new team principal
01:26:50at the Honda factory team,
01:26:52looking on as his remaining car in the race,
01:26:55that man, Rubens Barrichello,
01:26:56chases two-time world champion
01:26:58and Bahrain Grand Prix winner,
01:27:00Fernando Alonso in the Renault.
01:27:02He's obviously quicker, but, you know,
01:27:04with the state of these Formula 1 cars,
01:27:06I mean, I know it's very hard for NASCAR fans
01:27:08to understand how these guys just don't overtake
01:27:10like they do in NASCAR.
01:27:11Obviously, they overtake and re-overtake
01:27:13and all that on those high banked ovals.
01:27:15But it's a whole different kettle of fish here
01:27:17when you've got to set people up
01:27:18and you've only got one opportunity going in
01:27:20or coming out of a corner.
01:27:21All these corners are very, very difficult
01:27:23to go through side by side.
01:27:25And he's obviously a little bit quicker,
01:27:27but just can't quite get the job done.
01:27:29Well, Kimi Räikkönen has come alive,
01:27:31perhaps allaying any fears about any problems
01:27:33with that Ferrari.
01:27:35Logging his quickest lap of this stint
01:27:37at a 1.34.4,
01:27:39almost identical to what his teammate,
01:27:41the race leader, Felipe Massa,
01:27:43accomplished on that last lap.
01:27:47Brake dust spewing out of the front wheels
01:27:49of the Renault.
01:27:50Fernando Alonso takes a quick glimpse
01:27:52backwards at Rubens Barrichello.
01:27:55Kimi Räikkönen has responded,
01:27:56picked his pace up just a little bit,
01:27:58so that gap between him and Kubica
01:28:00got down to 3.2 seconds,
01:28:02about 3 seconds.
01:28:03It's now at 3.1,
01:28:04so it's really just not changing now.
01:28:06Now, this will be the part of the track,
01:28:08I believe, where the Honda will start
01:28:10to come back to the Renault.
01:28:12A little bit more wing on board
01:28:14on the Honda chassis,
01:28:15which will give more stability.
01:28:17As we ride going past Nakajima.
01:28:19Yep, trying to go past Nakajima.
01:28:21That is for position.
01:28:24That's for 13th place.
01:28:28Boy, it doesn't take much to turn
01:28:30a potential great race into a disastrous race,
01:28:32does it?
01:28:33Good point.
01:28:34Just coming off the grid,
01:28:35just a little bit slow.
01:28:36Didn't stall it,
01:28:37but just a slow getaway.
01:28:40A slow getaway,
01:28:41and then, of course,
01:28:42he was in there,
01:28:43and he just ran right in the back of Alonso.
01:28:45Yeah, and that led into that.
01:28:46You know?
01:28:47You have a bad start,
01:28:48an incident happens,
01:28:49and you have a bad pit stop
01:28:50as a result of it,
01:28:51and it all just falls apart.
01:28:52As Nick Hyde fell through,
01:28:54does Lewis Hamilton.
01:28:55This has been a weekend of lots of firsts.
01:28:57That first pole for BMW Sauber
01:28:59and Robert Kubica.
01:29:00Felipe Massa, it appears,
01:29:02will get his first win
01:29:03starting anywhere other than pole
01:29:05for Ferrari.
01:29:06As you see,
01:29:07Hamilton's pass on Nakajima once again,
01:29:09and Heidfeld looming behind.
01:29:12And this will be the first time,
01:29:13I think,
01:29:14that we will see Lewis Hamilton
01:29:16finishing in the double digits.
01:29:23What a relief to this guy.
01:29:25Felipe Massa.
01:29:27Well, this is the best response, Bob, isn't it?
01:29:29Really, just drive it,
01:29:30come up with a great result,
01:29:32and so, you know,
01:29:33I know the Italian press
01:29:34have given him a hard time,
01:29:35a lot of the press have given him
01:29:36a hard time, but
01:29:37I thought this year, actually,
01:29:38this year more than any other year
01:29:40for Massa,
01:29:41he has really come on.
01:29:42I mean, he's been competitive
01:29:43with Raikkonen,
01:29:44even if he had, you know,
01:29:45threw it off the track last race.
01:29:48But in the first race,
01:29:49yeah, that little bubble,
01:29:50but it was a mechanical failure,
01:29:52which put him out of the race
01:29:53in round one.
01:29:54You know, that's the team fault,
01:29:55not a driver fault.
01:29:56Well, sometimes,
01:29:57when he had rattled the car around a bit,
01:29:59he bashed it into the fence on lap one
01:30:01and had to come in for a new nose,
01:30:03and then he and Coulthard
01:30:05had that big coming together,
01:30:06so maybe it shook something loose.
01:30:08Sometimes you're held accountable
01:30:09for just being unlucky.
01:30:10Yeah, you are.
01:30:14I mentioned earlier
01:30:15that Fernando Alonso
01:30:16has acknowledged an out-clause
01:30:18in his Renault contract
01:30:19that might allow him to go
01:30:20where everybody suspects,
01:30:23and that is Ferrari.
01:30:24And that is part of the reason
01:30:26that this man, Massa,
01:30:27has been under so much pressure.
01:30:29If partisans thought
01:30:30that Ferrari could get
01:30:31the two-time world champion
01:30:32to partner Kimi Räikkönen...
01:30:34Yeah, and you bring up
01:30:35another good point about Formula 1.
01:30:37Just because you're doing a good job
01:30:38doesn't mean your drive is safe,
01:30:40does it?
01:30:41That's right.
01:30:42As Alonso said recently,
01:30:44Formula 1 contracts are flexible.
01:30:46Yeah.
01:30:47There you see
01:30:48the gloomy picture of Hamilton
01:30:49down ten spots.
01:30:55Oh, he's going to lose the lead
01:30:56in the world championship.
01:30:58It's going to be pretty close
01:30:59at the top, though, I'll tell you.
01:31:01Think about this.
01:31:02These teams have been on the road
01:31:03since, what, Steve,
01:31:04a week or so before
01:31:05the season opener in Melbourne.
01:31:07Yeah.
01:31:08Back on March 16th, was it?
01:31:10Yeah, exactly that.
01:31:12And you have to remember
01:31:13prior to that, I mean,
01:31:14they were working flat out
01:31:15doing the winter testing,
01:31:16the pre-season testing,
01:31:17get back to the factory
01:31:18just enough time
01:31:19to load everything
01:31:20into the transporters
01:31:21and into the pack horses
01:31:22and fly them halfway
01:31:23around the globe.
01:31:24There's been a lot
01:31:25of long-distance phone calls
01:31:26to family back home.
01:31:28But after this race,
01:31:29everybody will go back
01:31:30to their factories
01:31:31in England, France,
01:31:32or Germany, or Italy
01:31:35and get ready to start
01:31:36the European portion
01:31:37of the season
01:31:38in Barcelona
01:31:39in three weeks' time.
01:31:40Kubic has just done
01:31:41his personal best lap
01:31:42of a 33.7,
01:31:45which is just 6 tenths slower
01:31:46than the fastest lap
01:31:47of the race so far,
01:31:48Heike Kovalainen.
01:31:49So he's now only
01:31:50two and a half seconds
01:31:51behind Raikkonen,
01:31:52but all is well
01:31:53in the Raikkonen camp,
01:31:54I'm pretty sure.
01:31:58Hamilton will score
01:31:59no points here
01:32:00in Bahrain,
01:32:01which means he will lose
01:32:02the lead in the
01:32:03World Championship
01:32:04to Kimi Raikkonen
01:32:06as things stand
01:32:07with one lap to go.
01:32:08The next time that man,
01:32:09Felipe Massa,
01:32:10flies under the flag stand.
01:32:12And Keitfeld
01:32:13unofficially will move
01:32:14into second place
01:32:15in points.
01:32:16Hamilton will drop
01:32:17to third.
01:32:18Robert Kubica
01:32:19will step up to fourth.
01:32:21Followed by
01:32:22Heike Kovalainen,
01:32:23Massa,
01:32:25Jarno Trulli,
01:32:26and Nico Rosberg.
01:32:29Yeah, it's close
01:32:30at the top.
01:32:31It's good to see that.
01:32:32You know,
01:32:33we very often see
01:32:34these runaways away
01:32:35by the third race.
01:32:36Somebody's got like
01:32:37a 25 or 30 point lead.
01:32:38And this year
01:32:39it's all very,
01:32:40very close.
01:32:41It'll be fun to have
01:32:42Robert Kubica
01:32:43in the interview room
01:32:44after the race
01:32:45with our Peter Windsor.
01:32:47I've often thought
01:32:48it would be nice
01:32:49if they could have
01:32:50a fourth interview subject.
01:32:51Maybe have the
01:32:52press vote on it.
01:32:53One guy we'd obviously
01:32:54like to hear from here
01:32:55is Lewis Hamilton.
01:32:58Following this
01:32:59difficult race.
01:33:03Remember when
01:33:04Michael Schumacher
01:33:05made his final farewells
01:33:06to Formula One
01:33:07by finishing fourth
01:33:08in Brazil.
01:33:09We didn't get to see him
01:33:10in the interview room.
01:33:11Yeah, you're right.
01:33:12It would have been great.
01:33:13I think that was
01:33:14a great audacio, Bob.
01:33:15We should absolutely
01:33:16have a fourth guy
01:33:17in the pick of the race.
01:33:18Yeah, the big story
01:33:19of the race.
01:33:22Heike Kovalainen
01:33:23has had an interesting
01:33:24day too.
01:33:25Started fifth,
01:33:26will finish fifth.
01:33:28As he once again
01:33:29outperforms.
01:33:30Granted, it might be
01:33:31partly luck,
01:33:32but finishes ahead
01:33:34of the team's ostensible
01:33:35number one,
01:33:36Lewis Hamilton.
01:33:37And will end up
01:33:38with the same amount of points
01:33:39at the end of the day.
01:33:41So what do you do now,
01:33:42Mr. Dennis?
01:33:47His answer would probably be,
01:33:48I don't know,
01:33:49I'm too busy watching
01:33:50what happens to Max Mosley.
01:33:54And enjoy watching
01:33:55the FIA president
01:33:56twisting the wind a bit.
01:33:59A bit.
01:34:05This is turning out.
01:34:07If these guys finish
01:34:08in this position,
01:34:09this is just going to be
01:34:10an awesome race for BMW.
01:34:12They will be leading
01:34:13the Constructors' Championship.
01:34:15Off the final corner
01:34:16for the second straight year,
01:34:18redemption for Felipe Massa.
01:34:20He needs to buy real estate
01:34:22in Bahrain
01:34:23because this place
01:34:24really seems to be home
01:34:25for the young Brazilian.
01:34:27His dad celebrates
01:34:28in the Ferrari garage.
01:34:31Kimi Räikkönen
01:34:32makes it a Ferrari
01:34:33one-two dream finish.
01:34:36Robert Kubica,
01:34:38who celebrated so much
01:34:39with his first pole
01:34:40for BMW Sauber,
01:34:42picks up his second podium
01:34:44of the year in third.
01:34:46Well done, Felipe.
01:34:47Terrific job.
01:34:49Terrific job.
01:34:51And officially,
01:34:52Heidfeld, fourth.
01:34:54Heikki Kovalainen
01:34:55waving the McLaren colors
01:34:56in fifth.
01:34:57Jarno Trulli in sixth.
01:34:59Here he comes.
01:35:01That has to rank
01:35:02as a good finish
01:35:03and progress for Toyota.
01:35:04Mark Webber,
01:35:05who started 11th
01:35:06in the Red Bull Renault,
01:35:07just kept his head down
01:35:08all weekend,
01:35:09avoids the wandering
01:35:10Jarno Trulli.
01:35:12Wouldn't that have
01:35:13been embarrassing?
01:35:14And here comes
01:35:15Nico Rosberg,
01:35:16who was bitterly disappointed.
01:35:18Podium in Australia,
01:35:19nowhere to be found
01:35:20in Malaysia.
01:35:21And now back in the points
01:35:22in Bahrain.
01:35:24Well done for another
01:35:25second-generation
01:35:26Formula One star.
01:35:29We'll take a break
01:35:30and begin the post-race
01:35:31festivities from Bahrain
01:35:32here on Speed.
01:35:33Stay with us.
01:35:38Speed's coverage
01:35:39of the FIA Formula One
01:35:40World Championship
01:35:41is brought to you by
01:35:42BMW.
01:35:43BMW,
01:35:44the ultimate driving machine.
01:35:50There's a look
01:35:51for May
01:35:52at the Bahrain
01:35:53International Circuit
01:35:54and a well-earned
01:35:55celebration
01:35:57for Felipe Massa.
01:35:59Look at those front tires.
01:36:00Look at all the clag
01:36:01he left up on that.
01:36:02It's that slow lap
01:36:03where you have to pick up
01:36:04a lot of stuff.
01:36:05Tires are all hot.
01:36:06Kimi Raikkonen
01:36:07gave it a good run.
01:36:09I'll be interested
01:36:10to hear what he has to say
01:36:11about his day
01:36:12when Peter Windsor
01:36:13gets him up
01:36:14in the interview room.
01:36:15Well, it was that second stop
01:36:16that sort of confused
01:36:17everybody, wasn't it?
01:36:18Coming in early.
01:36:19Yeah.
01:36:20That's something
01:36:21you just had to deal with
01:36:22right away.
01:36:23Ah, here we are.
01:36:24I was wondering
01:36:25where the BMW had got to.
01:36:26Here comes Robert Kubica.
01:36:27Waving to the crowd
01:36:28on the way around,
01:36:29no doubt,
01:36:30old Robert.
01:36:32Not exactly
01:36:33an Alan Kulwicki-style
01:36:34victory lap,
01:36:35but then again,
01:36:36he didn't get the victory.
01:36:38Still, these guys
01:36:39are coming.
01:36:40I think there's no question
01:36:41BMW Sauber
01:36:42is now
01:36:43the third force
01:36:44in Formula One.
01:36:46Of course,
01:36:47Felipe Massa there.
01:36:48Of course, that's how
01:36:49he's going to be
01:36:50in the Sauber.
01:36:52See the height difference
01:36:53that you talked about
01:36:54earlier, David.
01:36:55Kubica may be,
01:36:56along with
01:36:57perhaps David Coulthard
01:36:58and Jenson Button,
01:36:59the tallest man
01:37:00in Formula One.
01:37:01Mark Webber's
01:37:02pretty tall as well.
01:37:03Giving hope
01:37:04to all the tall
01:37:05young drivers out there.
01:37:09How about Justin Wilson?
01:37:10I have no idea
01:37:11how the Brit
01:37:12ever got in a
01:37:13Formula One car.
01:37:14I mean, he's taller than I am.
01:37:15He's about 6'2".
01:37:16Yeah.
01:37:17He qualified well
01:37:18for the IndyCar start
01:37:19on the streets of
01:37:20St. Petersburg, Florida
01:37:21this weekend.
01:37:22Good luck to everybody
01:37:23down there.
01:37:24Now the teams
01:37:25crowd around
01:37:26and we await
01:37:27the podium ceremony
01:37:28coming up live
01:37:29in just a moment
01:37:30here on Speed.
01:37:31Kimi looks a little
01:37:32secondhand
01:37:33for the effort.
01:37:38Podium time
01:37:39at the Grand Prix
01:37:40of Bahrain.
01:37:41There is a very happy
01:37:42and no doubt relieved
01:37:43Felipe Massa
01:37:45taking the top step
01:37:46along with the new
01:37:47championship points leader
01:37:48Kimi Raikkonen
01:37:49who finishes second.

01:40:07and told him
01:40:08in light of the sex scandal
01:40:09in which the president
01:40:10is involved
01:40:11his presence was not
01:40:12welcome in Bahrain.
01:40:14He also holds
01:40:15a degree in political science
01:40:16from American University
01:40:17in Washington, D.C.
01:40:19Stefano Domenicali
01:40:22former sporting manager
01:40:23sporting director
01:40:24and now team principal
01:40:25of the Scuderia
01:40:26accepting the constructors trophy
01:40:28for the race win.
01:40:30Very well done.
01:40:321-2.
01:40:33Don't get better than that.
01:40:34It doesn't get much better
01:40:35than that.
01:40:36And that's
01:40:37that'll be
01:40:39Armand Massa's what
01:40:40sixth win?
01:40:43If I'm not mistaken
01:40:44those are three
01:40:45current or former
01:40:46Sauber drivers
01:40:47on the podium.
01:40:48Peter Sauber has to be
01:40:49pleased about that.
01:40:51Yeah.
01:40:52You're right.
01:40:53They are.
01:40:54Yeah.
01:40:55Raikkonen made his
01:40:56Formula One debut
01:40:57as Heidfeld's teammate
01:40:58in a Sauber
01:40:59and Heidfeld of course
01:41:00just not quite on the podium.
01:41:02Well done.
01:41:03Yeah.
01:41:04Very well done.
01:41:05Big day for
01:41:06Robert Kubica.
01:41:07He looked a little bit
01:41:08rueful.
01:41:09He shrugged his shoulders
01:41:10when he's looking down
01:41:11at the team there
01:41:12but boy they
01:41:13they've got everything
01:41:14the BMW team
01:41:15coming on
01:41:16and got some
01:41:17mighty big
01:41:18footsteps to finish
01:41:19to fill.
01:41:20No champagne
01:41:21being sprayed here.
01:41:22This of course
01:41:23is an Islamic country
01:41:24so a local
01:41:25fruit drink
01:41:26called WARD
01:41:27is being sprayed.
01:41:33Carbonated water drink
01:41:34with pomegranate
01:41:35and other fruits.
01:41:39Not Kimi's
01:41:40preferred beverage
01:41:41but there it is.
01:41:44That's it.
01:41:45Quickly getting rid of
01:41:46that stuff.
01:41:47Not much use for that.
01:41:50And in a moment
01:41:51of course they'll be back
01:41:52in the interview room
01:41:53to chat with our
01:41:54Peter Windsor.
01:41:55So stick around
01:41:56in a moment
01:41:57we'll hear from the
01:41:58top three here
01:41:59in Bahrain.
01:42:08Welcome back to Bahrain
01:42:09and in case you think
01:42:10we've been fluffing
01:42:11this whole BMW Sauber
01:42:12thing being the
01:42:13next big power
01:42:14in Formula 1
01:42:15they now lead
01:42:16the Constructors points.
01:42:17Let's go to Peter Windsor.
01:42:19Congratulations
01:42:20to the three podium
01:42:21finishers of the
01:42:22Gulf Air Bahrain
01:42:23Grand Prix.
01:42:24Finishing third
01:42:25for the BMW Sauber team
01:42:26and taking that team
01:42:27into the lead
01:42:28of the Constructors
01:42:29World Championship.
01:42:30Robert Kubica
01:42:31second for
01:42:32Scuderia Ferrari
01:42:33Marlborough
01:42:34and now leading
01:42:35the World Championship
01:42:36for drivers
01:42:37Kimi Raikkonen
01:42:38and heading the
01:42:39Scuderia Ferrari
01:42:40Marlborough
01:42:411-2 and scoring
01:42:42the win.
01:42:43Felipe Massa.
01:42:44Felipe,
01:42:45I guess that was
01:42:46almost a perfect
01:42:47day for you.
01:42:48Qualified second
01:42:49but took the lead
01:42:50virtually off the
01:42:51line into the
01:42:52first corner
01:42:53and never headed
01:42:54well except for the
01:42:55pit stops.
01:42:56I think it was
01:42:57it was a great
01:42:58qualifying as well
01:42:59because looking
01:43:00how when Robert
01:43:01stops I think
01:43:02I did a good lap
01:43:03and we had
01:43:04we were pretty
01:43:05strong as well.
01:43:06So it didn't
01:43:07change anything
01:43:08starting second
01:43:09because we had
01:43:10a good start.
01:43:11We had a
01:43:12not a very good
01:43:13start and I
01:43:15excuse me
01:43:16and I passed him
01:43:17so
01:43:19and then the race
01:43:20was pretty
01:43:22difficult in the
01:43:23beginning because
01:43:24we had a lot of
01:43:25oil in the track
01:43:26and we almost
01:43:27went off
01:43:28all
01:43:29me and
01:43:30Robert
01:43:31and it was
01:43:32pretty difficult
01:43:33over there
01:43:34and then
01:43:36during the race
01:43:37the car was just
01:43:38very very good.
01:43:39I didn't push
01:43:40like completely
01:43:41into the limit
01:43:42because
01:43:43I saw the gap
01:43:44increasing
01:43:45and then Kimi
01:43:46was behind
01:43:47but I could
01:43:48manage to
01:43:49to keep the gap
01:43:50to him and
01:43:51and it was
01:43:52the strategy was
01:43:53perfect as well.
01:43:54Yeah it looked like
01:43:55you were having
01:43:56a bit of a fight
01:43:57there with your
01:43:58teammate Kimi
01:43:59trading fastest
01:44:00laps in the mid
01:44:01phase of the race
01:44:02but at the end
01:44:03of the day you
01:44:04had a lot in
01:44:05hand as you
01:44:06say.
01:44:07Can you tell us
01:44:08a little bit
01:44:09about coming
01:44:10to Bahrain
01:44:11where you'd won
01:44:12last year?
01:44:13Well I mean
01:44:14for sure you know
01:44:15I had not very
01:44:16easy weeks
01:44:17but that's
01:44:18life I mean
01:44:19it's not the
01:44:20first time
01:44:21it won't be the
01:44:22last one as well
01:44:23so you always
01:44:24have some
01:44:25some bad days
01:44:26in your life.
01:44:27I had two bad
01:44:28days in the first
01:44:29two races
01:44:30but you know
01:44:31I know
01:44:32I know we are
01:44:33quick you know
01:44:34when you have
01:44:35a mistake
01:44:36and you are
01:44:37behind
01:44:38you know
01:44:39but when you have
01:44:40a mistake
01:44:41and you are
01:44:42fighting for
01:44:43the victory
01:44:44I mean
01:44:45that's better
01:44:46but for sure
01:44:47the race was
01:44:48pretty difficult
01:44:49because you know
01:44:50I didn't want
01:44:51to make any
01:44:52mistakes
01:44:53just didn't
01:44:54push so much
01:44:55as well
01:44:56just try to
01:44:57bring the car
01:44:58home and
01:44:59just controlling
01:45:00the pace as
01:45:01well but for
01:45:02sure I had
01:45:03all the time
01:45:04in my mind
01:45:05what's happened
01:45:06in the last race
01:45:07and that helps
01:45:08for sure
01:45:09the next race
01:45:10as well
01:45:11I guess you
01:45:12love this circuit
01:45:13yeah I love
01:45:14this circuit
01:45:15I mean it's the
01:45:16second victory
01:45:17in a row
01:45:18and I always
01:45:19went very
01:45:20very strong
01:45:21here I remember
01:45:22in my first
01:45:23year
01:45:242006
01:45:25with Ferrari
01:45:26I almost
01:45:27made the pole
01:45:28position
01:45:29I was stuck
01:45:30in traffic
01:45:31in the qualifying
01:45:32but I almost
01:45:33made the pole
01:45:34position already
01:45:35in the first
01:45:36race
01:45:37so it's always
01:45:38very very
01:45:39strong
01:45:40so I like
01:45:41the circuit
01:45:42it's very nice
01:45:43people here
01:45:44and we are
01:45:45always welcome
01:45:46here so it's
01:45:47nice to be here
01:45:48and get the
01:45:49second victory
