Round 4 of the 2008 F1 season at Barcelona.
Transcript
00:00:00There's last year's winner, Felipe Massa for Ferrari who will start third.
00:00:07He won the race in a McLaren three years ago.
00:00:12But the man the crowd will be willing to victory is the man on the left side of your picture,
00:00:16Fernando Alonso.
00:00:17The winner here at 06 for Renault has qualified on the front row.
00:00:22Yes, he's low on fuel, he has very little chance of winning this race, but if the crowd
00:00:26has anything to do with it, Alonso will be the man to watch today in his home Grand Prix.
00:00:34But where are the McLaren Mercedes?
00:00:36Heike Kovalainen on Friday had a gearbox problem in the morning, did eight laps.
00:00:41In the afternoon, he did ten laps.
00:00:42His teammate, Lewis Hamilton, had a spin down here.
00:00:46A couple of spins, in fact, on Friday.
00:00:48They just don't seem to be able to quite get their act together.
00:00:50There's Kovalainen pulling up in the morning and in the afternoon, Schrockler in the afternoon.
00:00:55Are they, in fact, missing the expertise of two-time world champion Fernando Alonso,
00:01:00who left the team at the end of the season in a huff?
00:01:02And for me, Super Aguri, the super best friends.
00:01:07Are we about to say goodbye to some real good friends from the pit lane?
00:01:10This very junior team started late in 2005 and did a stellar job to get on the grid for
00:01:152006.
00:01:1611th in 2006 in the Constructors' Cup, 9th last year, but now they are absolutely strapped
00:01:22for cash.
00:01:23They are not prepared to bail the team out.
00:01:25Well, they need a miracle now to save the team.
00:01:28Talks appear to have broken down with a potential backer, but as we see the drivers and team
00:01:33congratulating each other, it could be a swan song for the super best friends.
00:01:37In qualifying, it certainly looked like the team felt that this might be the last hurrah.
00:01:42We will miss Beagle and the boys from Super Aguri if that's what happens.
00:01:46There's an onboard camera with the man this crowd desperately hopes can do something special
00:01:51today.
00:01:52He's done it so many times before.
00:01:54Fernando Alonso in the Renault.
00:01:57There you see the rest of the grid forming up, and somewhere down in that crowd is our
00:02:02Peter Windsor.
00:02:03Peter?
00:02:04Thanks, Bob.
00:02:05Well, I'm just so glad to have this job.
00:02:08I tell you, some days I think I'm the luckiest guy in the world.
00:02:12The atmosphere here at the Spanish Grand Prix with Fernando on the front row, you can see
00:02:16the two cars just being pushed up there as I speak.
00:02:19Couldn't be better.
00:02:20Driving to the circuit this morning, the feeling of anticipation here in Barcelona, just brilliant.
00:02:26And I don't know, we don't think he's got that much fuel on board, but don't forget
00:02:30the Renaults were very, very quick in Q2 when everybody was running light.
00:02:34So I think the prerogative is there for them just to play around a little bit and do a
00:02:38great job for the crowd.
00:02:39They've done that.
00:02:40Look for Fernando, however, to drive a great race, maybe looking for a podium finish.
00:02:45Well, in fact, we expected to see the crowd down for this race with another Grand Prix
00:02:52coming up later this year in Valencia, Spain.
00:02:54But there you saw the number, 132,600.
00:02:59The hillsides have been full of Spaniards cheering on Fernando Alonso all weekend.
00:03:04We'll be back.
00:03:15Arguably one of the most beautiful pieces of a Formula 1 car and without doubt one of
00:03:22the few pieces you never get to see, very rarely, because it's hidden under the bodywork.
00:03:27This is the exhaust primary collector and secondary of the V8 engine.
00:03:31And to explain more about this beautiful piece of engineering, I'm joined by John Wheatley,
00:03:34the team manager at Red Bull Racing.
00:03:36John, thanks very much for sparing the time.
00:03:38What can you tell us about this?
00:03:40I think perhaps the most difficult thing to convey to the fans of Speed Channel is
00:03:45how light this exhaust system is.
00:03:48It's 20 gauge at its thinnest point.
00:03:51It's a combination of incredible fabrication skills, different sizes of metal right the
00:03:56way through it.
00:03:57I mean, I think there's 20 pieces in each primary alone.
00:04:00There's castings, machinings, and of course the whole lot has to come together into this
00:04:05organic shape.
00:04:07How many man hours does it take to produce a set of headers for a Formula 1 car?
00:04:11We have three guys who work permanently on exhausts.
00:04:14So at any one time, it probably has one guy working on the left-hand bank of primaries,
00:04:19one guy working on the right-hand bank of primaries, and another guy working on the
00:04:23collectors and exhausts.
00:04:24And how long will it last in a Formula 1 environment before it basically becomes, well, a piece
00:04:29of art you can hang on the wall?
00:04:30Well, as you probably imagine, Steve, it doesn't last that long.
00:04:33They get fitted brand new for the race, and they would generally do one or two practice
00:04:37sessions after that before, as you say, they're scrap.
00:04:41Well, for me, they're absolutely beautiful, there's no question of that.
00:04:45The fabricators have always been the true artisans of Formula 1.
00:04:48They're capable of turning their hands to anything.
00:04:50One guy that both of us worked with a few years ago, Robin Grant, said that his skills
00:04:55were a bit like an 18th century silversmith, but using 21st century materials.
00:04:59And looking at this beautiful piece of engineering, I understand exactly what he meant.
00:05:16Welcome back, everybody, to Speed's coverage of the Spanish Grand Prix and the Acura Prix
00:05:19Ratio.
00:05:20Sadly, in the hours following the Bahrain Grand Prix, we lost Robin Grant, and he'll
00:05:24be sadly missed.
00:05:26He was a great guy, a real individual, and not only in the world of Formula 1, but in
00:05:31the world, wider world, of vintage Bentley restoration, he was very, very highly regarded.
00:05:37Unquestionably, the two R28s that will contest this race will feature many components built
00:05:41by Robin, and there'll be many people from the world of Formula 1 that'll be watching
00:05:46Renault's progress with a very special interest.
00:05:48And I think that's an element of Formula 1, Steve, that people tend to overlook, as you
00:05:54see Fernando Alonso preparing for what may be the biggest race of his life thus far.
00:05:59In this age of computer-generated this and that, and the milling machines that can produce
00:06:03such incredibly precise work, that there is a place in car building for true fabrication.
00:06:08Guys who just take a piece of metal and a hammer and create something like those incredibly
00:06:12sinuous exhaust headers.
00:06:14Yeah, absolutely.
00:06:15And I've always held them in very, very high regard.
00:06:19You know, people you can call on at any moment to build something, what they call in, they
00:06:24call it in reverse engineering, there'll be a component made by the fabricators, the designers
00:06:28will go down to the fabrication shop and say, hey, you know what?
00:06:31That's exactly what we want, we're now going to draw it, and then they'll become a part
00:06:34of the car permanently.
00:06:35There's a look at the action on the grid, there is Christian Horner, Peter Windsor's
00:06:38camera is not quite functioning well right now, but we can still talk with Peter and
00:06:42hear him, and he's standing by right now with Takuma Sato, Peter.
00:06:48Thanks very much, Bob.
00:06:49Yes, sad that the camera is not working right now, because it's such a great scene here
00:06:52on the grid.
00:06:53But a very quick word with Takuma Sato, Taku, first of all, congratulations on the team
00:06:57performance under the pressure you are under to be that near the Two Force India cars,
00:07:02a great achievement.
00:07:03I know it's a great achievement from the team, and you know, very happy and very proud of
00:07:07it, you know, we made this happen to the weekend.
00:07:11What is the atmosphere like in the team?
00:07:13How are you stopping the guys thinking of the next race?
00:07:16How do you get them to concentrate on the moment?
00:07:18It is obviously an incredibly tough time for all the single boys in the faculty and here
00:07:22in the race team.
00:07:23But I think, you know, this team is the whole idea, it's just a passion, and everybody
00:07:27grabbed together, and we are really passionate about the future.
00:07:31I know it's a difficult decision, but also, you know, what we've got is what we've got,
00:07:34so we have to be very best of it, and certainly try this afternoon.
00:07:39Takuma Sato, Super Aguri, thanks for talking to us, and let's hope we see you at the next
00:07:43race in Turkey.
00:07:45Back to you, Bob.
00:07:46All right, thanks very much, Peter.
00:07:47There is Nelson Piquet, whose father, Nelson Sr., a three-time world champion, was inducted
00:07:53into the Walk of Honor.
00:07:55There is his father on the right, Nelson here to watch his son, one of several second-generation
00:07:59drivers who will race in the coming Grand Prix.
00:08:05Welcome back to a jam-packed Circuit de Catalunya in Montmeló, just outside Barcelona, Spain.
00:08:12A massive crowd on hand, and somehow, a big crowd always gives extra excitement when an
00:08:17event is about to unfold like this one.
00:08:20All the Formula 1 teams back on home soil in Europe.
00:08:24There's Nick Heidfeld, ready to climb into his BMW, and speaking of BMW, let's meet the
00:08:30boss at BMW Sauber with Peter Windsor.
00:08:36Thank you very much, Bob.
00:08:37Yes, I'm with Dr. Mario Tyson, team principal of the Sauber BMW team.
00:08:40First of all, Mario, congratulations on a great start to the season.
00:08:43I guess you know you're doing well when you have to be disappointed when Nick's qualifying
00:08:46ninth.
00:08:47Still top ten?
00:08:48Still top ten, yes.
00:08:49I think we are the team which has been in the top ten for the longest time now with
00:08:54both cars.
00:08:55It was tight this time, though, but I think Nick can do better in the race.
00:09:01What actually was the problem in qualifying from Nick's point of view?
00:09:04It didn't look as if he had any major dramas.
00:09:06It was not just in qualifying.
00:09:08He was struggling a bit in free practice already, so in qualifying he didn't get the
00:09:16third sector right several times, and so with two or three tenths more, you end up here.
00:09:22Like Felipe Massa, he always had a problem with the third sector, but let's talk about
00:09:25the other driver briefly, Robert Kubica, on a roll at the moment, the very lightweight
00:09:29Robert Kubica.
00:09:30I don't think so, but we will see.
00:09:33Very best of luck to you.
00:09:34Thanks for talking to us.
00:09:35Back to you, Bob.
00:09:36All right, thanks, Peter.
00:09:37Dr. Tyson has been a very busy man this weekend.
00:09:39There was a round of the Formula BMW championship featuring lots of young drivers here at Barcelona.
00:09:45It was won by a kid named Adrian Tambay, son of former Ferrari Grand Prix winner Patrick
00:09:51Tambay, who is now a TV commentator.
00:09:53There's Sebastian Bourdais with Scuderia Toro Rosso.
00:09:57He's had another good weekend.
00:10:00Very solid feedback to his team.
00:10:02He has slotted right into Formula 1 racing, a form of motorsports that he always knew
00:10:08was his eventual home.
00:10:09Here's Felipe Massa.
00:10:10We'll be back.
00:10:14Welcome back to the Acura pre-race show for round four of the 2008 Formula 1 season.
00:10:18There's Kimi Raikkonen, who will start from pole for Ferrari in today's race, and if history
00:10:24is any guide, you may be looking at the race winner.
00:10:27The last seven Spanish Grand Prix here at Barcelona have been won by the pole sitter.
00:10:33Let's go to Peter Windsor with Jackie Stewart.
00:10:38Thanks very much, Bob.
00:10:39Yes, I can never resist talking to Jackie.
00:10:40Always great to see you, Jackie.
00:10:42Spain means a lot to you.
00:10:44Wonderful country for Grand Prix racing.
00:10:46Tremendous history here.
00:10:47Fantastic.
00:10:48I'm lucky enough to have won three Grand Prix here, two in Barcelona, one in Madrid.
00:10:52You know, all these crowd, Peter, they're for one man, Alonso, and even getting in traffic-wise
00:10:59before Alonso, it was easy.
00:11:01Isn't that brilliant?
00:11:02Who's going to beat Kimi Raikkonen today?
00:11:04Nobody.
00:11:05Well, I think that says it all.
00:11:06Where's Jean-Michel?
00:11:07Anyway, there he is.
00:11:08Back to you, Bob.
00:11:09Thanks for talking to us, Jackie.
00:11:12Well, as we were saying, being the pole sitter is the place to be in Spain.
00:11:18As Fernando Alonso, with the media from Spain absolutely jammed around him, tries to suit
00:11:24up.
00:11:25Now, obviously, we have a beautiful day here.
00:11:27The last man to win a dry Spanish Grand Prix from lower than the front row on the grid
00:11:31was Gilles Villeneuve and his Ferrari at Harama back in 1981.
00:11:35A great race.
00:11:37Now back to Peter Windsor with McLaren's Ron Dennis.
00:11:40Ron, everybody's saying, ah, McLaren and Mercedes seem to be off the pace.
00:11:45But I've been trying to point out that three guys did the same lap time, and if you take
00:11:48Alonso out, Lewis could have been on the front row.
00:11:51That's quite right.
00:11:52I mean, you have to see how the race strategy unfolds.
00:11:56Obviously, we consider ourselves a little heavy, probably only time in life that weights
00:12:02an advantage.
00:12:03But we'll have to see.
00:12:04A couple of hours, we know.
00:12:07Robert Kubica lost five kilos before the first race to get a bit of extra ballast in the
00:12:12BMW.
00:12:13Is that something you'd like to get your drivers to do?
00:12:15No, our...
00:12:18He could lose a lot more weight if he had his nose fixed.
00:12:20Now, Ron, that's not very nice.
00:12:23No, it's not.
00:12:24It's meant in humour.
00:12:25Meant in humour.
00:12:26No, the simple fact is our drivers' condition is very much part of the science we try to
00:12:33bring to everything.
00:12:34And, you know, they are pretty small guys, anyway.
00:12:39Incredibly fit.
00:12:40They don't have any surplus weight on them.
00:12:42That's Hamilton's motivation at the moment.
00:12:44A poor start in Bahrain.
00:12:45A few problems off the line there.
00:12:47Then that incident with Fernando.
00:12:48We all make mistakes.
00:12:50I think Bahrain's behind us.
00:12:52We're here.
00:12:53I think we're pretty competitive.
00:12:54We'll just have to see how the race unfolds.
00:12:56Very best of luck.
00:12:57Thanks for talking to us.
00:12:58Back to you, Bob.
00:12:59All right.
00:13:00Thanks very much, Peter.
00:13:01Now, sometime in the next few events, depending on how you define participation in a Formula
00:13:051 race, Rubens will become the most experienced Grand Prix driver ever with his 257th race
00:13:12passing Riccardo Patrese.
00:13:14Peter Windsor offers this perspective on the longest career of all time.
00:13:21God willing, Rubens Barrichello will shortly become the most experienced Formula 1 driver
00:13:25in the history of the sport.
00:13:27He began his career in March 1993.
00:13:29March 1993.
00:13:30Was it that long ago?
00:13:31This is what some of the younger guys said they were doing in March 1993.
00:13:3693?
00:13:37I think it was 93.
00:13:38I won my first Trofeo Margotti, which was in Parma, my first European kart race in 93.
00:13:45I was 13 years old at the time, so a few years ago.
00:13:491993.
00:13:50I was 10 years old and for sure I was playing the piano or running in the garden, something.
00:13:58I was just starting to do go-karts.
00:14:00No, not even.
00:14:01I started at the end of 1993, so I was not even doing go-kart yet, so, yeah, it was quite
00:14:05funny.
00:14:06I hadn't thought about that.
00:14:07I think I was in elementary school at that moment and, yeah, I was just watching Formula
00:14:121 in front of the TV and, yeah, it was like, Formula 1 was like another world.
00:14:19March 1993, I just started karting, so it's incredible that he's been in Formula 1 since
00:14:25then and now I'm racing with him.
00:14:27It's quite unreal.
00:14:28Around 12 o'clock, I left kindergarten and then, I don't know, maybe I had a nice afternoon.
00:14:34Do you think, because you don't remember any of it?
00:14:37No, I don't remember.
00:14:38I was five years old, so, six years old, five years old, what do you expect?
00:14:42I was driving most probably, no, March, I was still at home because it was winter in
00:14:47Poland, but in 1993, I was already practising karting, but not thinking about Formula 1
00:14:53for sure.
00:14:54Yeah, poor Rubens, this is not going to sound good.
00:14:58I was seven years old, so I was probably still on my three-wheeler, wheeling around in my
00:15:05parents' home.
00:15:08Completely oblivious to the name Rubens Barrichello.
00:15:11With Mickey Mouse painted on my room walls and Mickey Mouse bedsheets.
00:15:18I'm honoured, you know, I'm honoured because I've seen a bunch of good guys coming in and
00:15:23for me, you say now, 257, it's such a number and I, you know, for me, it's almost as important
00:15:31than beating that, is that I still have the fighting spirit, I'm still determined to win.
00:15:37It's not like, okay, I've conquered that and that's over.
00:15:40No, I believe so much on what I can do in terms of speed, in terms of, you know, something
00:15:46inside of me still burns and that's why I feel so good.
00:15:56Three races run, each run by a different man.
00:15:59The title fight, wide open.
00:16:04Back in Europe after racing on the far side of the globe.
00:16:08The cars and equipment arriving in the team's own transporters instead of air cargo containers.
00:16:13Back to the familiar motorhome, the familiar food.
00:16:16And the track feels like home too, since all the teams test here.
00:16:20It has every kind of turn and your performance becomes a template for what to expect for
00:16:24the rest of the season.
00:16:27His exploits have infected Spain with Formula One fever.
00:16:31Can he live up to the expectations of his fans?
00:16:36The BMWs, invading McLaren and Ferrari territory, ready to make the big two into the big three.
00:16:45Some of the best drivers, Felipe Massa, Kimi Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton, have made them
00:16:51this year.
00:16:52These errors could loom large in the story of the championship.
00:16:57A loose collection of elements.
00:16:59The power of 22 engines.
00:17:01The grip of 88 tires.
00:17:03The pride and ambition of the drivers.
00:17:06The sublime beauty of speed is about to come together in the Grand Prix of Spain.
00:17:12Next.
00:17:27A year before the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, a racetrack opened in nearby Montmeló.
00:17:32And while the Olympics are consigned to history, each year, the one motorsport that challenges
00:17:37the Olympics in worldwide popularity returns to Spain.
00:17:41Welcome to Speed's live coverage of round four, the 2008 Formula One season, the Spanish
00:17:46Grand Prix from Barcelona.
00:17:48Hello again, everyone.
00:17:49I'm Bob Varsha with David Hobbs, Steve Matchett and Peter Windsor.
00:17:52Let's take a look at this beautiful track with our BMW track analysis.
00:17:55David.
00:17:56On board now is Kimi Raikkonen as he sets that pole position yesterday down this main
00:18:00front straight.
00:18:01195 miles an hour as he comes down to turn one.
00:18:05Elf, sharp right-hander, best overtaking opportunity on the track.
00:18:08Sachet from Elf into this little left-hand sweep.
00:18:12Then into Renault, this long, long right-hander.
00:18:14As you can see, the road's very flat here.
00:18:16Puts a lot of heat in those left front tires particularly.
00:18:18Slight downhill run now into Repsol.
00:18:22Another long, long right-hander going downhill all the time.
00:18:25A bit of an understeer-inducing corner that.
00:18:27Down into this next corner, Siat.
00:18:29Left-hander now.
00:18:30Road falls away there, so this is also another understeer.
00:18:33A quick run downhill to Wirt.
00:18:35You see some overtaking going on here, some brave people sometimes.
00:18:38And you've got to get this track, this corner right, because uphill run out of here.
00:18:42Quick right-hand sweep at the top.
00:18:44Bit of a lift there from Kimi.
00:18:46Oh, they all use a lot of road on the left there.
00:18:48Now we're coming down to La Caccia.
00:18:50Used to be a long loop, now it's a double apex left-hander.
00:18:53See some overtaking going to there.
00:18:55This is the final sector just starting.
00:18:57Very difficult, complicated.
00:18:59We saw a lot of understeer, a lot of oversteer on this corner here.
00:19:02There's no camber to help you.
00:19:03You go over this little crest.
00:19:05Start this downhill right-hander, which has been somewhat spoiled by this new chicane.
00:19:08Out of left, right.
00:19:10Got to be very careful of that kerb on the left.
00:19:12It's very, very high, but you want to make a good exit from here onto this front straight.
00:19:15Because as I said, going into Turn 1 is really your best opportunity for overtaking.
00:19:19So you've got to make a good exit of that last corner.
00:19:24And adding to the challenge this weekend is Royal Highness King Juan Carlos of Spain is on hand.
00:19:29There you see the weather conditions.
00:19:30A very dry day as well with low humidity.
00:19:33Because the king is here, the government, as governments tend to do around the world,
00:19:37including our own in the United States, have jammed much of the local radio frequencies.
00:19:42So these teams may have some trouble talking to their drivers.
00:19:46We understand that's why we had trouble with Peter Windsor's live camera during our Acura pre-race show.
00:19:51Get set for what could be a very wild day as the cars get set to roll off.
00:19:58And so they do.
00:19:59And as they do, here is the starting grid for today's Spanish Grand Prix.
00:20:02Two world champions on the front row.
00:20:04Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari, Fernando Alonso in the Renault.
00:20:07In five seasons of battling at the front of the Formula 1 grid,
00:20:10this is only the sixth time they've shared the front row.
00:20:13Fernando Alonso should be low on fuel, but he has the crowd behind him.
00:20:16Row two last year's pole sitter, winner, also the fastest overall in qualifying in Q2,
00:20:20the Ferrari of Felipe Massa, alongside the BMW of Robert Kubica,
00:20:24again out-qualifying his teammate and maintaining his electrifying 2008 form.
00:20:28On row three, all McLaren Mercedes.
00:20:31Lewis Hamilton and Henke Kovalainen.
00:20:33You heard Ron Dennis say they're probably heavy on fuel,
00:20:36but the lap analysis suggests this is all they really had,
00:20:39leaving some, as David suggested earlier,
00:20:41to say that they miss Alonso's development skills.
00:20:44Mark Webber for Red Bull makes his 50th top ten start.
00:20:47He's a great qualifier.
00:20:48Next to him, the first of the Toyotas of Jarno Trulli,
00:20:51but his worst start of the 2008 season.
00:20:53On row five, Nick Heidfeld of the second BMW salver
00:20:56has his worst start of the season, but still in the top ten.
00:20:59Next to him, young Nelson Piquet,
00:21:01the second generation driver emerged from a pack of cars
00:21:04in a catfight in the second round of knockout qualifying
00:21:07for his first career top ten start.
00:21:09For the third time out of the four races, a Honda lines up 11th,
00:21:12this time in the hands of Rubens Barrichello.
00:21:14Missing Q3 by just 65 one thousandths of a second.
00:21:17Still very slow in a straight line.
00:21:19Alongside him, the Williams Toyota of Kaz Nakajima,
00:21:21his best start of the year by far.
00:21:23On row seven, Jenson Button in the second Honda.
00:21:26Say what you will about Jenson's skills,
00:21:28but in seven previous starts here at Barcelona,
00:21:30he's only been higher than this on the grid four times.
00:21:33Next to him, Timo Glock in the Toyota,
00:21:36his worst grid position of the season.
00:21:38Nico Rosberg in his Williams Toyota,
00:21:40has his worst start of the year by far.
00:21:42He's not qualified here in the top tens,
00:21:44his GP2 in 2005.
00:21:46Next to him, the first of the Toro Rosso, driven by Sebastian Bordet,
00:21:49out of Q1 for the second time in a row.
00:21:51On row nine, David Coulthard in the second Red Bull Renault,
00:21:54next to Sebastian Vettel in the Scuderia Toro Rosso Ferrari.
00:21:58Row ten, the fourth India cars of Fischer-Keller and Sutil.
00:22:01Fischer-Keller out qualifying in Handley again.
00:22:03And on the eleventh and final row,
00:22:05the Super Aguri Hondas of Anthony Davidson and Takuma Sato
00:22:08in what could be the last race
00:22:10for this financially struggling young team.
00:22:13Now quickly to our Toyota storylines
00:22:15for today's Spanish Grand Prix.
00:22:16For me, seeing red.
00:22:18Ferrari has been dominant all weekend.
00:22:20Yes, it's great to see Fernando Alonso on the front row,
00:22:23but the question is,
00:22:24will Ferrari run away in this race to a one-two finish,
00:22:27or does somebody have something for them, David?
00:22:30Well, you've got to face the fact that BMW are, in fact,
00:22:32leading the Constructors' Championship.
00:22:35And Alonso going on the grass there.
00:22:38I was saying BMW are leading the World Championship,
00:22:40and he's right up there on the second row, Robert Kubica.
00:22:43Heidfeld's going to have his work cut out, though,
00:22:44coming back through the field. Steve?
00:22:46Well, for me, it is Alonso and his fuel strategy.
00:22:49How much fuel is on board Fernando's Renault?
00:22:52If he is legit and good to go to around lap 11 or 12,
00:22:55then the development on this car is absolutely staggering.
00:22:58Here come the lights for the Spanish Grand Prix.
00:23:00Turn it up!
00:23:07Great start across the front row.
00:23:09Fernando Alonso desperately needs to lead down to turn one.
00:23:12Look at the McLarens coming forward around Robert Kubica's white BMW.
00:23:16But it'll be a Ferrari one-two into turn one.
00:23:21Great start for Felipe Massa behind his team leader, Raikkonen.
00:23:26Heidfeld coming forward well in the second BMW.
00:23:30Boy, Alonso made a great start.
00:23:32I thought he was going to get down to turn one in front of the Ferrari,
00:23:34but he tailed off towards it as he got to turn one.
00:23:37Good start from Alonso.
00:23:40It's Adrian Sutil, and he gets a piece of Sebastian Vettel.
00:23:43And that's Sebastian Vettel, yet again, out on the first lap.
00:23:47The third race in four starts, he's gone out on lap one.
00:23:51Poor Vettel.
00:23:52Unbelievable.
00:23:53Yeah, but an absolutely terrific getaway by the two Ferraris.
00:23:57Alonso slotted in third spot behind them.
00:24:00Safety car graphic at the top of your screen.
00:24:02You see it, so that'll bring the safety car out.
00:24:04Remember, these guys will bunch up.
00:24:07Oh, what a pity for Vettel.
00:24:09One of the hottest young drivers in Formula One has been absolutely stricken this year.
00:24:15I think he has a grand total of 38 laps completed now in four races.
00:24:21Boy, he's just not getting a break at all.
00:24:24It was a crash that happened in front of him,
00:24:26but of course that is one of just the problems of qualifying,
00:24:29you know, near the back.
00:24:31Yeah, it is.
00:24:32But just to give some clarification on this safety car issue now,
00:24:35remember the cars can pit.
00:24:37They are allowed to pit for mechanical repairs.
00:24:40They cannot be refuelled.
00:24:42If the teams do refuel,
00:24:44I mean, they won't be physically prevented from doing so,
00:24:46but if they do refuel,
00:24:47they will incur a 10-second stop-go penalty.
00:24:50So mechanical work can be carried out on the cars,
00:24:53no refuelling.
00:24:56Here's another look.
00:24:57Adrian Sutil was just right on the grass there,
00:25:00way over the apex.
00:25:01Just...
00:25:02Boy, and there were two other cars involved.
00:25:04Yeah, David Coulthard and one of the Super Agouris.
00:25:07On board with Vettel now.
00:25:09There goes Sutil.
00:25:12God, he tried to miss it just so close.
00:25:16Tried to go where the spinning car wouldn't be when he got there,
00:25:19and it didn't work.
00:25:20There's Vijay Mallya, the Indian billionaire
00:25:22who funds the Force India Formula 1 team.
00:25:26Adrian Sutil has had a brutal start to the year too,
00:25:29completely outrun by Giancarlo Fisichella.
00:25:32Everybody thought that Sutil was going to be,
00:25:34you know, the next Lewis Hamilton,
00:25:36but talking Lewis Hamilton made a great start there,
00:25:39going slotted in now behind Alonso,
00:25:41got around Robert Kubica,
00:25:42which you'll know that I'd be very happy about.
00:25:44Here you see.
00:25:45A fairly good getaway off the line by Alonso.
00:25:48I was wondering whether or not the clag and grass buildup
00:25:50on his tyres off that little off-on incident
00:25:52may have slowed him, but...
00:25:54I don't know.
00:25:55It was good.
00:25:56Now Lewis goes right up behind Kubica,
00:25:58cuts off his teammate Kovalainen,
00:26:00then goes around the Polish driver.
00:26:02Kovalainen tries the outside down into one,
00:26:04but at this point the BMW is on the brakes.
00:26:08Ooh, talk about the BMW and me
00:26:10and this Mercedes sandwich there.
00:26:11Yeah.
00:26:14Hey, well, Heidfeld got a rocket start in the second BMW
00:26:17and worked his way forward.
00:26:19There's Alonso coming across to try to block Massa,
00:26:21but the Brazilian having none of it.
00:26:26Boy, oh boy, what a getaway.
00:26:27Peter Windsor.
00:26:29Well, Bob, just to add to that pass of Lewis Hamilton there,
00:26:32just fantastic driving between all three,
00:26:34I thought, there, Hamilton, Kubica and Hecky Kovalainen,
00:26:37all basically the same generation.
00:26:39There's a tremendous affinity between Robert and Lewis.
00:26:41They can run very, very close to one another,
00:26:43but touch wood, so far they haven't really touched one another.
00:26:46Boy, that was touching wood.
00:26:47That was touching grass, nearly touching rubber,
00:26:49nearly touching concrete.
00:26:50Yeah, that's a good point, though.
00:26:51Hamilton and Kubica are best friends.
00:26:55Of course, we saw what happened a couple of races ago
00:26:57with Jenson Button and David Coulthard,
00:26:59who are also best friends,
00:27:00until they collided heavily in Bahrain.
00:27:02Yeah, Hecky Kovalainen had to make a lift there
00:27:05as Hamilton cut right across his bow,
00:27:08but then that's what these starting...
00:27:10standing starts...
00:27:12You get that sort of thing.
00:27:13You know, these people just zoom all over the track.
00:27:16And Adrian Sutil, who we saw have that crash going through Renault,
00:27:19that long, long right hander,
00:27:20I mean, he was right all four wheels on the grass
00:27:23trying to get around the inside of David Coulthard.
00:27:25Well, he hasn't got a cat in hell's chance of working that one.
00:27:27No word from the pits as to whether DC
00:27:30or one of the super gurus pit it, as you see Vettel.
00:27:33Oh, just an old Vettel is just caught out by it.
00:27:36Yep.
00:27:37What have I got to do?
00:27:38Oh, dear, oh, dear.
00:27:39Terrible, terrible luck.
00:27:40I was trying to have a look at the cars at the start as well
00:27:42to gauge an idea of which cars was running on which tyres,
00:27:45the harder, the soft compound tyres.
00:27:46They're all running.
00:27:47As far as I'm aware,
00:27:48every car started the Grand Prix on the softer compound tyres.
00:27:52They were on board with Hamilton.
00:27:53And again, any viewers new to Formula 1 coverage,
00:27:56the softer compound tyre
00:27:58indicated by that white stripe around the tyre.
00:28:01The harder compound tyre does not have that stripe.
00:28:04And this is clearly,
00:28:05I think this track now in the race compound,
00:28:07it's clearly all the teams are favouring
00:28:09the soft compound tyre.
00:28:10I would expect to see them go soft, soft and hard
00:28:13right at the end.
00:28:14Behind his arch nemesis, Alonso there,
00:28:16putting some heat in his tyres.
00:28:17Alonso again, that absolutely unique way
00:28:20he has of putting heat in the tyres.
00:28:22I mean, he absolutely pushes the envelope
00:28:24to the extreme there.
00:28:25He whips that car so, look at it,
00:28:27look again, nobody else is doing that.
00:28:29Well, but everybody trying to get heat in those tyres.
00:28:32And he gets away with it.
00:28:33As you pointed out, Steve,
00:28:34I mean, this is the softer of the two Bridgestone compounds.
00:28:36Yes.
00:28:37We're using the hard and medium compounds here
00:28:40because this track has a reputation
00:28:42for going through tyres.
00:28:43But everybody has been using the softer one
00:28:47because it appears to be...
00:28:48Putting some heat there,
00:28:49but Gabi and Al put a lot there.
00:28:51Felipe Massa putting some heat in that front tyre.
00:28:53David Kulthard said the harder compound
00:28:55is very tough to get heat into.
00:28:57And as you know,
00:28:58if you're a regular fan of Formula 1,
00:29:00everybody is going to have to use
00:29:01at least one set of that harder compound Bridgestone
00:29:04before the race is over.
00:29:05Now watch for Alonso to try...
00:29:06Hamilton to have a go down the inside of Alonso here
00:29:08as they come down to turn one for the first time.
00:29:10But Alonso is a great restart.
00:29:12I think he's too far back.
00:29:13He caught old Hamilton on the nap there.
00:29:15Alonso is among the best on restarts.
00:29:19They're not rocket science.
00:29:23The two Ferraris, Gab, Alonso,
00:29:25followed by Hamilton.
00:29:28Look at those jam-packed grandstands.
00:29:32Well, I mean, there's a massive crowd here.
00:29:35Yeah.
00:29:36And as I said earlier,
00:29:37I mean, everybody thought that the crowd would be down
00:29:39because of a second Grand Prix in Valencia
00:29:41coming up in September,
00:29:42but no sign of it.
00:29:44Piquet having a go there at Jarno Trulli.
00:29:47There's two Hondas.
00:29:48That would be for ninth.
00:29:50Up front, Kimi Räikkönen with things well in hand.
00:29:52Got his wingman behind him.
00:29:55Kubica, Kovalainen, Heidfeld,
00:29:58Weber, Trulli and Piquet,
00:30:00the top ten.
00:30:01Great show.
00:30:02What a great show.
00:30:03What a great turn-in.
00:30:04Yeah.
00:30:05Oh, man.
00:30:07Who says four-in-one cars don't have grip?
00:30:09It's like a slot car, isn't it?
00:30:10Yeah.
00:30:21This is a part of the track,
00:30:22the third sector,
00:30:23that Lewis Hamilton has been struggling with all weekend.
00:30:26And you heard Dr. Mario Tyson say earlier,
00:30:28Nick Heidfeld has a great track.
00:30:30Nick Heidfeld hasn't gotten it right yet either.
00:30:33Nick Heidfeld, on the other hand,
00:30:34has gone ninth or seventh,
00:30:36so got himself a couple of points.
00:30:38Kimi Räikkönen sets the fastest lap of the race.
00:30:40I think we're going to see this
00:30:41quite a few times this afternoon.
00:30:43Right.
00:30:44So let's give the numbers.
00:30:45One minute, 23.594.
00:30:48Lola Alonso hanging right on to Felipe Massa.
00:30:51Well, if he's light on fuel, he should.
00:30:56If he's light on fuel.
00:30:57Yeah, that's the question, isn't it?
00:30:59I'm not sure how light he is.
00:31:00It is.
00:31:01You know, and to me,
00:31:02this is what makes Formula 1 races so intriguing.
00:31:06Is it the performance of the cars?
00:31:07Is it the weight of the cars?
00:31:08Is it the performance of the drivers?
00:31:10Is it all three?
00:31:11How's it going to play out?
00:31:12If this is a true pace from the runner,
00:31:14I am absolutely staggered by the development
00:31:17that's happened over the first three races
00:31:19back at the factory.
00:31:20Oh, wouldn't you think how terrible it was
00:31:21in Australia, Malaysia, and the sheep is now.
00:31:23It's right there.
00:31:25Well, when fans ask,
00:31:26what are we going to see in Barcelona?
00:31:27I pointed out,
00:31:28as you've seen in all the enthusiast literature,
00:31:30in that three-week gap,
00:31:32the teams came off the road
00:31:34after the first three races of the season.
00:31:36They had their factories working on new parts,
00:31:38but they didn't fly them to Australia,
00:31:40Malaysia, or Bahrain.
00:31:41They brought them here to Barcelona.
00:31:43So it shouldn't be a real surprise
00:31:45if the performance of certain cars
00:31:47is a lot better than it has been.
00:31:49But as you say, Steve...
00:31:50Oh, and a PK off into the gravel.
00:31:52Oh, is he going to get it now?
00:31:54Yeah, he'll be OK.
00:31:56Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.
00:31:58Losing all kinds of positions.
00:32:00There goes Sébastien Bordet.
00:32:02There's Flav, his boss.
00:32:04Nonplussed.
00:32:05But for Fernando Alonso,
00:32:06whose average qualifying position this year
00:32:08through three races was 10th,
00:32:10to suddenly find himself on the front row
00:32:12is pretty staggering, isn't it, Steve?
00:32:14Yeah, it's great.
00:32:15And it's great to see.
00:32:17Hamilton now catching up with Alonso.
00:32:20He's 7 tenths of a second behind him now.
00:32:23So that should cause some fireworks
00:32:25when Alonso starts holding off Hamilton.
00:32:32Rosberg up to 10th from 15th on the grid,
00:32:34but still at the sharp end of this race.
00:32:36Raikkonen, it's that fella in the F2008
00:32:39that continues to set fastest sector times
00:32:41and fastest lap times.
00:32:42He's just done it again in sector 1.
00:32:4422.7.
00:32:4623.035 for Raikkonen the last time through.
00:32:51We're on board with Massa now, of course.
00:32:5322.7 for Massa as well,
00:32:55but just slightly slower than Raikkonen's time.
00:32:57Raikkonen fastest in sector 2.
00:32:59But really, the Ferraris absolutely neck and neck
00:33:02bar almost nothing.
00:33:0422.7 for both of them in sector 1.
00:33:0631.5 and 31.6 respectively
00:33:09for Raikkonen and Massa's sector 2.
00:33:11Just ahead of the radio antenna
00:33:13and the pitot tube up front,
00:33:14you saw that vent that has caused
00:33:16so much discussion in the Formula 1 pit lane.
00:33:18As has that guy, Michael Schumacher,
00:33:20making an appearance for Ferrari.
00:33:23Still refers to them as we.
00:33:26In all his comments.
00:33:27Look at this.
00:33:28Coming down to turn 1.
00:33:29Alonso, Hamilton, Kubica,
00:33:32and right behind Kubica is Kovalainen,
00:33:34the second of the McLarens.
00:33:35With all the money Ferrari's paid Michael,
00:33:37he ought to refer to them as we until he dies.
00:33:40I bet he will.
00:33:41He probably will, yeah.
00:33:42I tell you what,
00:33:43is Kimi Raikkonen running light here, Steve?
00:33:45I mean, he's got a 1.
00:33:49Maybe.
00:33:50Maybe.
00:33:51Putting you on the spot.
00:33:53Who's that there?
00:33:54Who's that in the crowd?
00:33:56But it is, you know,
00:33:57we're all second guessing.
00:33:58You bring up a good point, David,
00:33:59that everybody in the pit lane,
00:34:01the drivers, the engineers from rival teams,
00:34:03are all second guessing fuel loads on different cars.
00:34:07But if this...
00:34:10It's not if.
00:34:11I mean, the Alonso Renault is going incredibly fast.
00:34:14And when you think what it was like in Australia,
00:34:17it is absolutely astounding
00:34:19the ground they made up.
00:34:21And that has to be down to
00:34:23Fernando Alonso working with that team.
00:34:25Piquet Jr. can't give them an awful lot, but...
00:34:27And I think maybe we are seeing
00:34:29the lack of his expertise in the McLaren team.
00:34:32Well, I tell you what,
00:34:33if you look at Kimi Raikkonen's time
00:34:35relative to Alonso's time from Q2,
00:34:37where there were two genuine low-fuel runs,
00:34:40no fuel on the car,
00:34:41absolutely flat-out racing,
00:34:43Q2 times are almost identical.
00:34:4520.78 for Kimi,
00:34:4720.8 for Alonso.
00:34:49So they are genuine times coming out of the Renault.
00:34:51Is that Piquet down there?
00:34:53It is.
00:34:54I wonder if he damaged it.
00:34:55Look at the right rear, probably.
00:34:56Right rear tire looks flat.
00:34:57Maybe, maybe from that shot.
00:35:00And the team leaps to its feet.
00:35:03Well, maybe not.
00:35:04Let's have a look.
00:35:05Keep your eye on the right rear.
00:35:08Trying to go...
00:35:09Bonk.
00:35:11Yikes.
00:35:12Well, I still think the right rear is down.
00:35:14A lot of that contact was on the front, but...
00:35:17Keep your eye on the right rear on this shot.
00:35:20Sébastien Bordet.
00:35:21Well, this is one of those things, Sébastien Bordet.
00:35:23I mean, Piquet had got himself right down the inside.
00:35:27You know...
00:35:28And here's Bordet.
00:35:29I know you want to keep people behind you,
00:35:32but I mean, there comes a point when it's all too late.
00:35:37There again, the rules and regulations tell you
00:35:39not to make these moves to keep people behind.
00:35:42So he had to let them get alongside him,
00:35:44but then, of course, there's no point turning into him,
00:35:46ain't gonna help anybody.
00:35:47Nose change on the STR.
00:35:51Took a pretty good shot on the inside of the nose,
00:35:53if you've never seen it.
00:35:54I would have thought the suspension took a pretty good belt there,
00:35:56myself, but...
00:35:57Oh, it's broken.
00:35:58It's broken.
00:35:59Yeah.
00:36:00It's over.
00:36:01Yeah.
00:36:02Left front is broken.
00:36:03And so, both Scuderia Toro Rosso cars are out of the race.
00:36:07It will be a big disappointment to Red Bull founder
00:36:10Dietrich Mateschitz, who is on hand this weekend
00:36:13to watch his two teams in action.
00:36:15He's down to one.
00:36:16We'll be back.
00:36:18Welcome back.
00:36:19You've got a quick glimpse there of Sebastian Bourdais,
00:36:21who has just parked his Scuderia Toro Rosso
00:36:23after a collision with Nelson Piquet,
00:36:26who is also out and is on his way back to the pits
00:36:29in a course car.
00:36:30We also saw Anthony Davidson's Super Aguri Honda
00:36:33put up on the dollies and wheeled into the garage,
00:36:36and I believe that may have been the Super Aguri
00:36:38we saw in the first lap, Schmazl,
00:36:40in which Adrian Sutil and Sebastian Vettel
00:36:43also departed the Spanish Grand Prix.
00:36:45So, we have five cars, it appears,
00:36:48out of the race at this point.
00:36:50Well, we're now serving lap 10.
00:36:52Just doing a straight comparison between Q2, Q3 times
00:36:55to try and get an idea of fuel loads on board the cars.
00:36:59We have Alonso hitting around lap 11 to lap 12.
00:37:03So, we're right in that window to pure mathematics
00:37:06of when that window is going to open for Alonso.
00:37:08But, of course, we have the safety car period
00:37:10out for a couple of laps.
00:37:11We may be able to push Alonso's window
00:37:14for another couple of laps on from there because of that.
00:37:16Typically, you use about 30% to 40% less fuel per lap
00:37:20when you're behind the safety car.
00:37:22Meanwhile, this guy, Kimi Raikkonen in the Ferrari,
00:37:24has been chipping away at fast lap.
00:37:26I think only once in the last six laps
00:37:28has he not improved fast lap of the race.
00:37:30He's now at 1.22.508.
00:37:33And Massa is right there about three-tenths behind,
00:37:36lap after lap.
00:37:37The Ferrari's the only two cars in the one-minute,
00:37:3922-second zone last time through.
00:37:42And Alonso seems to have got the measure of Hamilton.
00:37:45He's pulled out.
00:37:46He was half a second in front.
00:37:48Now, he's over one-and-a-half seconds in front.
00:37:51Watching Nick Heidfeld,
00:37:53probably running more fuel than his teammate, Robert Kubica.
00:38:00Heidfeld taking over the dubious honor
00:38:03of being the most experienced Formula One driver
00:38:05not to have won a race.
00:38:10It's kind of cool that BMW Sauber
00:38:14leads the Constructors' Championships
00:38:16without that first win for the team.
00:38:18But they just keep getting better weekend to weekend.
00:38:21Let's listen in.
00:38:22RPM 10.
00:38:25Use boost button to overtake.
00:38:30Over to you, Steve.
00:38:32Yeah, RPM 10 and use boost button to overtake.
00:38:34I think they've got to allow him just to use a few extra revs.
00:38:37Now, to the regulations, they're limited to 19,000.
00:38:39But for short bursts,
00:38:41they'll probably allow it just to get up to 19,000,
00:38:44meaning they're probably running it around 18.8,
00:38:47there or thereabouts, for reliability.
00:38:51Really, on a Formula One engine, they're limited to 19,000.
00:38:54But the big engineering challenge
00:38:56is always the last 1,000 RPM.
00:38:59That's when it really gets interesting on the dynamometer.
00:39:02The last 1,000. How about the last couple of hundred?
00:39:05Actually, Dave, you're probably right.
00:39:07The last couple of hundred, yeah.
00:39:09Saw that local yellow out where Piquet went off
00:39:12in the La Cagia corner.
00:39:14The tightest corner on the circuit.
00:39:16All the corners here have very romantic names,
00:39:19like Renault, Repsol, which is an oil,
00:39:21Seat, Worth, which makes tools,
00:39:24Eurocar, and New Holland, which makes tractors.
00:39:27That's right. They're the most romantic.
00:39:30That's good that you named corners.
00:39:32Turn 2 stuff is nothing special.
00:39:35Now, all the drivers use the turn 1, 2, and 3, of course.
00:39:38Yeah, well, drivers. Who can explain?
00:39:41I'm with you there, Bob.
00:39:44Meanwhile, a Sunday drive for that man, Kimi Räikkönen,
00:39:48hoping to become the first two-time winner
00:39:51in this Formula One season.
00:39:53But we know Kimi Räikkönen's legendary luck.
00:39:57He is the man who, while standing in the kitchen,
00:40:00would be run over by a New Holland tractor.
00:40:04Well, he has won this race once.
00:40:06I mean, he has.
00:40:07Just the most extraordinary things happen to Kimi Räikkönen.
00:40:10I see what you mean. I see where you're going.
00:40:11You had me confused there for a minute there, David.
00:40:13He's the sort of bloke who'd be standing in his kitchen,
00:40:14making his coffee in the morning,
00:40:15and New Holland would run through the door and crash him.
00:40:18But at the moment, things are looking very good for him.
00:40:21He's pushing. He's pushing again now.
00:40:23Fastest in sector 1 and 2 again.
00:40:2522.4 in sector 1.
00:40:27Compare that to Massa's 22.5.
00:40:2931.2 in sector 2.
00:40:31Massa equals that in sector 2.
00:40:32So they're still running neck and neck.
00:40:35Because if he can get enough on his teammate here,
00:40:37I mean, it maybe is running a little bit on the light side,
00:40:39if he can get enough on him,
00:40:40because he can maintain that lead
00:40:41when after the pit stop rotation.
00:40:43Well, typically, a lap of fuel consumption around here
00:40:46is around 2.4 kilos.
00:40:48So for argument's sake, let's say 5 pounds.
00:40:51So one of these cars, either Räikkönen or Massa,
00:40:53has got 5 pounds extra weight on board.
00:40:55So, you know, they're not running even,
00:40:58from the start of the race, if you see what I mean.
00:41:00Even.
00:41:0122.17.
00:41:04That's getting down there.
00:41:07That would be Kimi Räikkönen's last effort.
00:41:10Just a few tenths slower than his pole position now.
00:41:14Happy belated birthday wishes to that man,
00:41:16Felipe Massa, who turned 27 on Friday.
00:41:19He's had it.
00:41:22I'll cut you.
00:41:27And should Kimi Räikkönen wind up on the podium today,
00:41:30which he almost certainly will,
00:41:32it will be his 51st podium,
00:41:34tying Mika Häkkönen for the all-time best
00:41:37by a Finnish driver.
00:41:38It's hard to believe,
00:41:39Kimi Räikkönen is in his 125th start.
00:41:43That is hard to believe,
00:41:44but it seems like yesterday.
00:41:47It really does.
00:41:48Seeing Rubens Barrichello in that Jordan,
00:41:50beginning his career back in 1993,
00:41:52there was so much pressure on that teenager.
00:41:56I've got to tell you,
00:41:57I've got mixed feelings about that,
00:41:58Rubens Barrichello taking over 256,
00:42:00because, as you know,
00:42:02I was working with Patrese back in 93.
00:42:04I was trying to think what I was doing back in 93,
00:42:06and I was running him for those 16 races.
00:42:09Nick, your pace looks relatively good,
00:42:11so keep it up.
00:42:12We may be in some points here.
00:42:16OK.
00:42:19David, what were you doing in 93
00:42:20when all that was going on?
00:42:21Yeah, god, 93, I was doing...
00:42:24You were buzzing around the world with me
00:42:25covering Formula 1 part of the time.
00:42:27Yeah.
00:42:28We were all at the same track at the same time.
00:42:30I haven't counted my races,
00:42:31but I must be up there in the 300 mark now.
00:42:34Got to be.
00:42:35Well, Lewis Hamilton is now caught back to Alonso.
00:42:39Oh, boy.
00:42:40Steady boy.
00:42:42The thing about Barrichello was
00:42:44he began his career in 93.
00:42:46In May of 94,
00:42:47his hero, Ayrton Senna,
00:42:49was killed on that horrible weekend at Imola
00:42:51in the San Marino Grand Prix.
00:42:53Barrichello himself
00:42:54had a horrendous accident that weekend,
00:42:57and soon he was carrying the colors for Brazil,
00:43:00and all of his countrymen
00:43:01looked to him as the next Senna.
00:43:03And that were very, very
00:43:05big driving boots to fill.
00:43:07We'll take a break and return to Spain.
00:43:10Back live in Barcelona,
00:43:13this is Fernando Alonso
00:43:15pitting from third on lap 16
00:43:17as the technical chief,
00:43:19Pat Simmons from Renault, looks on.
00:43:22Well, the camera shot, unfortunately,
00:43:24didn't give a good shot of the fuel delivery time.
00:43:26Guessing around seven, seven and a half seconds
00:43:28of fuel on board.
00:43:30Lap 16.
00:43:31A little bit later than anticipated,
00:43:33but again, factor in that safety car period
00:43:35where they were using less fuel
00:43:36running behind the car for a couple of laps.
00:43:38It comes up between the two Hondas
00:43:40in 11th place, or 12th place.
00:43:42Now we need to see when the others are going to stop
00:43:45get an idea of the relative performance
00:43:47between the Renault and the Ferrari.
00:43:49Well, I think he went for longer than we thought, didn't he?
00:43:52Be a two-stop strategy, I think.
00:43:54Yeah, a little bit longer, Dave.
00:43:55Yes, absolutely.
00:43:56But again, I think we have to just
00:43:58remember the safety car period
00:43:59because that will have extended
00:44:01the window a little bit for him.
00:44:04Jenson Button behind.
00:44:06Now, the next question is, of the front runners,
00:44:08which of the two Ferrari guys is going to twitch first?
00:44:11Räikkönen still setting fastest laps
00:44:13and fastest second time.
00:44:1421.8, 21.8
00:44:16equals, almost exactly equals
00:44:19his qualifying time.
00:44:21So he must be...
00:44:23Well, who knows?
00:44:28There you see the fuel on Alonso.
00:44:3088 litres.
00:44:33The crowd has any say in the matter.
00:44:36He will scramble back, not only into the points,
00:44:38but to the podium, if not the victory.
00:44:41For his part, Alonso says,
00:44:42seventh place is about all I can expect
00:44:44behind the top three teams.
00:44:49There's Rubens Barrichello.
00:44:50Fast for the two Hondas.
00:44:51Get a close look at the nose of the Honda.
00:44:53You'll see what they're calling the elephant ears.
00:44:55Seems a little inelegant, but so are the ears.
00:45:00Well, they're inelegant,
00:45:01but sometimes they remind me a little bit
00:45:03of the art museum in Milwaukee,
00:45:07with the Calatrava Art Museum,
00:45:09which has a sole brise,
00:45:11where it opens up into some wings,
00:45:13and they look just a bit like
00:45:14those front wings that sprouted on the Honda this week.
00:45:17Well, this is Calatrava's part of the world.
00:45:19It is indeed.
00:45:20It's from Catalonia, I believe.
00:45:22So the FOM figures, the graphic there for Alonso's refueling
00:45:26but I think that's not accurate.
00:45:29I bet the FOM are running on a generic figure
00:45:31of two kilos per lap,
00:45:33but I have it round here at Barcelona in 2008 at 2.4,
00:45:37which drops it down to like 27 laps.
00:45:40Hamilton now 11 seconds out of the lead.
00:45:48It's going to be tough for Hamilton to win this race.
00:45:52It's going to be tough for Hamilton to win this race.
00:45:55But look at that big gap between him and Massa.
00:45:59Look at the speed at which it's growing.
00:46:01Yeah.
00:46:020.6 of a second on two of those three laps.
00:46:04That's a lot.
00:46:07And he's not driving away from Robert Kubica,
00:46:09nor his teammate.
00:46:10His teammate keeps on setting.
00:46:12Heike Kovalainen keeps on setting the fastest lap,
00:46:14or the fastest sector in sector one.
00:46:17He's very, very quick through sector one.
00:46:20How's he doing in sector three there, David?
00:46:22He's struggling a little bit with the lack of downforce
00:46:24on the car through that third sector.
00:46:26Well, this is the time now when Hamilton
00:46:28really wants to start pushing
00:46:30with Alonso being out of his way.
00:46:32Now, you know, because Alonso's had his first stop
00:46:35and dropped down to 11,
00:46:37the Renault's no longer in the way of Hamilton.
00:46:39He's really got to push now.
00:46:40This is his time to push.
00:46:44Robert Kubica's just done his best sectors,
00:46:46one and two, 22.4 and 31.3,
00:46:49making a little bit of ground on Lewis Hamilton.
00:46:54There we go.
00:46:55Here comes Massa.
00:47:01Three laps after Alonso pitted.
00:47:04So Alonso was not that far ahead.
00:47:17Another set of soft compound tyres.
00:47:20Hamilton into second spot now.
00:47:22There goes Mark Webber in sixth.
00:47:24Jarno Trulli in seventh.
00:47:26And Massa rejoins in eighth.
00:47:30Alonso still down in eleventh,
00:47:32unable to get around Ruben Barrichello.
00:47:35Looks like he's saving his hard set of tyres
00:47:37for his last stint.
00:47:40Come on, Kimi Raikkonen
00:47:42doesn't exactly have the hammer down out front.
00:47:48We had to guess a little bit of Alonso's figures
00:47:50because as we said, fuel delivery time,
00:47:52we didn't see a good shot of the fuel hose
00:47:54going onto the car.
00:47:56But I would expect Alonso's now
00:47:58pretty much running exactly the same strategy
00:48:00to a lap or thereabouts that Ferrari are running.
00:48:04That right.
00:48:05So unless Hamilton stops right now,
00:48:07that will put Hamilton into the lead
00:48:09for a short period of time.
00:48:14Watch Raikkonen's tyre strategy.
00:48:16The same as Massa's.
00:48:18Softs on the car, softs coming off the car.
00:48:20New set of softs going on the car.
00:48:26Very nice stop.
00:48:30And now,
00:48:33very nice stop.
00:48:35So that set of lights
00:48:37instead of a lollipop that the Ferrari team
00:48:39uses to send their
00:48:41cars out of the pits,
00:48:43that should be de rigueur
00:48:45in the near future, I'm sure.
00:48:47Raikkonen comes out well ahead of his teammate,
00:48:49Felipe Massa, just comes to the top of the picture.
00:48:51Weber pits and Trulli pits,
00:48:53both in the top ten.
00:48:56So as you say, David,
00:48:58this should now put Hamilton
00:49:00to the top of the timesheets.
00:49:03How much further will Hamilton push the car
00:49:05before he has to come in for fuel?
00:49:09On board with Hamilton.
00:49:19This is where he spun on Friday.
00:49:22This is where he spun on Friday.
00:49:26It's also where he got knocked out of the lead
00:49:28in the GP2 race here in 2006.
00:49:32By his teammate.
00:49:35Is he going to stop in that lap?
00:49:42Here he comes.
00:49:44From the lead.
00:49:47Kubica comes in right behind him.
00:49:49Kubica and Hamilton.
00:50:00He'll move Heikki Kovalainen to the top.
00:50:03Nick Heidfeld still circulating.
00:50:05It's going to be tough for Hamilton to get out in front of...
00:50:07He's not going to do it.
00:50:09No, I don't think he's going to get it.
00:50:11No.
00:50:16Wow.
00:50:18I think he did.
00:50:20Kubica is right behind him.
00:50:22Wow.
00:50:24I kept expecting the BMW to appear,
00:50:26driver left, but it never happened.
00:50:28I think Hamilton comes out behind Ross.
00:50:30Was that Ross Burton?
00:50:34Yep, there he is in sixth.
00:50:36Hamilton is trying to shake off
00:50:38a terrible weekend in Bahrain.
00:50:40Heavy crash on Friday.
00:50:42A terrible getaway
00:50:44at the lights in the race.
00:50:46Then he ran into the back of Fernando Alonso.
00:50:48Compromised his car.
00:50:50Finished out of the points.
00:50:52Who's that?
00:50:54That's McLaren.
00:50:56Is that Heikki Kovalainen?
00:50:58There's something lying under
00:51:00the gravel track.
00:51:02Right there.
00:51:04Wow.
00:51:06He's buried it.
00:51:09No.
00:51:11They need to get that car
00:51:13out from under the tires.
00:51:20Down in the Camso corner.
00:51:30It's like he got under the tire wall.
00:51:32Absolutely.
00:51:34I don't like the look of that at all.
00:51:36Oh, dear.
00:51:40They just don't have the manpower
00:51:42to extricate the car.
00:51:44It speeded at a terrific rate.
00:51:46Oh, look.
00:51:48Something like a brake rotor.
00:51:50Something broke on the car.
00:51:52His left front wheel
00:51:54was at a very severe angle.
00:51:56Boy, that was unabated speed
00:51:58into that tire wall.
00:52:00There goes the safety car
00:52:02and the medical car.
00:52:05Our thoughts right now
00:52:07are with Heikki Kovalainen.
00:52:12Thank goodness for those tire barriers.
00:52:14They do do a wonderful job,
00:52:16but if you force the car
00:52:18underneath it like that...
00:52:20Medical car overtaking
00:52:22the pace car there.
00:52:2822 laps.
00:52:30One third of the way
00:52:32to the Spanish Grand Prix.
00:52:38You see the running order.
00:52:40Nick Heidfeld of the BMW Sauber
00:52:42takes over the lead.
00:52:44Ron Dennis looking on
00:52:46from the McLaren pit.
00:52:54Hear a smattering of applause
00:52:56from the crowd,
00:52:58but the host broadcaster
00:53:00doesn't seem to know
00:53:02what's going on.
00:53:06Yeah, you're right, Bob.
00:53:08What you saw there,
00:53:10when we just circled
00:53:12something lying in the gravel trap
00:53:14there, there was a puff of smoke
00:53:16or something out of the left front
00:53:18just before the McLaren
00:53:20went into the gravel.
00:53:22I think the reason for the applause
00:53:24is Fernando Alonso is the car
00:53:26right behind the safety car.
00:53:29In charge of their
00:53:31worldwide racing operations.
00:53:33Well, these guys will be
00:53:35waiting anxiously to hear
00:53:37from the accident scene,
00:53:39but they do have the advantage
00:53:41that they will have the telemetry
00:53:43streaming off the car right up
00:53:45to the point of impact to see.
00:53:47They will already have a very,
00:53:49very good idea what the cause
00:53:51of that accident was.
00:53:53They have load sensors built
00:53:55into each corner so they can
00:53:57be able to see brake pressure
00:53:59on each corner of the car,
00:54:01brake temperature on each corner
00:54:03of the car, so they will know.
00:54:05Waving the cars by to pick up
00:54:07the race leader, Nick Heidfeld.
00:54:15Heikki Kovalainen,
00:54:17one of three drivers to score
00:54:19in every race of the season thus far.
00:54:21Kimi Raikkonen and Nick Heidfeld
00:54:23are the other two.
00:54:26And only Kovalainen and Heidfeld
00:54:28have completed every lap in the three
00:54:30races run coming into this one.
00:54:34Here comes the race leader
00:54:36to be picked up by the safety car.
00:54:38We'll take a break and return to Barcelona.
00:54:42Welcome back to the
00:54:44Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona, Spain.
00:54:46Bob Varsha, David Hobbs, Peter Windsor
00:54:48and Steve Matchett with you, still behind
00:54:50the safety car after a
00:54:52huge accident involving Heikki Kovalainen
00:54:54and McLaren Mercedes after a paramechanical
00:54:56failure. Medical crews
00:54:58are still on the scene. We will not
00:55:00speculate, but it is a very
00:55:02serious accident.
00:55:04This is Rubens Barrichello coming into the pits.
00:55:06You just saw on screen the graphic to say
00:55:08pit lane is open, which is a requirement
00:55:10from Charlie White in the race director,
00:55:12which allows the cars
00:55:14to refuel now.
00:55:18Let's get to the penalty quickly if we can.
00:55:20Obviously in the safety car.
00:55:24You cannot do it in the
00:55:26safety car. You have to do it after, Nick.
00:55:31Now, the radio cut in just as I was
00:55:33about to give an explanation of why that would
00:55:35be before the graphic came
00:55:37on screen to say pit lane is open,
00:55:39which, as I say, is a requirement under the
00:55:41sporting regulations to allow the cars to refuel.
00:55:43Nick Heidfeld took on
00:55:45fuel right here. Now,
00:55:47I would suggest the reason for that is it was right
00:55:49on the husk of actually running
00:55:51out of fuel. The team would be aware
00:55:53of that. They have no choice but to refuel
00:55:55the car. Rubens Barrichello,
00:55:57live pictures you see. Extensive
00:55:59damage to the front wing of the R8
00:56:01108 chassis.
00:56:03Well, I wonder whether
00:56:05or not running behind the safety car...
00:56:07He just came in for a pit stop.
00:56:09He's only just gone out.
00:56:11A number of cars pitted. Also
00:56:13Jenson Button, Giancarlo Fisichella,
00:56:15David Coulthard and Timo Glock
00:56:17out on cold tyres.
00:56:19That's good
00:56:21debris on the track.
00:56:23And a very unhealthy
00:56:25wing hanging down underneath the suspension.
00:56:27He's trying to shake it off.
00:56:29Yeah,
00:56:31but because
00:56:33Heidfeld took on fuel
00:56:37under that period when he shouldn't have refueled,
00:56:39there is a 10-second stop-go penalty,
00:56:41as we heard, but you're not allowed to take that
00:56:43under the safety car period.
00:56:45You're not allowed to take that
00:56:47under the safety car period.
00:56:49It has to be afterwards. Now, let's have a look.
00:56:51It picked it up
00:56:53right there in the pit stop.
00:56:55I think it was the jack.
00:56:57I think the jack took the front wing.
00:57:01It's a first.
00:57:03Oh, that's what did it.
00:57:05Was it?
00:57:07I think it was before that. We saw the wing
00:57:09derange just when he came out of his stall.
00:57:11This could be tearing the car
00:57:13to bits underneath.
00:57:15It must have been
00:57:17running into Fisichella, surely.
00:57:21Do you know what, David?
00:57:23I wonder whether or not there was a little bit of
00:57:25pylon damage, a fracture on the pylons
00:57:27holding the main plane to the nose
00:57:29and then there it goes.
00:57:31And then I wonder whether or not the strain
00:57:33of lifting the car on the jack during
00:57:35the pit stop just did the final
00:57:37damage to the pylons
00:57:39and broke it off.
00:57:41Well, here he comes again.
00:57:45We talked earlier about Rubens
00:57:47who's career
00:57:49and why this may or may not
00:57:51be his record-breaking
00:57:53257th Formula One start.
00:57:55The reason is there's some dispute about
00:57:57what it actually takes to participate
00:57:59in a race. Just being there, qualifying,
00:58:01starting the race, whatever.
00:58:03In any event,
00:58:05by the Monaco race, two races
00:58:07down the calendar from right now,
00:58:09Rubens will be the all-time
00:58:11most experienced driver. Now there is
00:58:13a pylon in his car and I see a lot of
00:58:15sunlight down there in the
00:58:17footwell. I'm wondering
00:58:19if that might be the problem.
00:58:21There is massive, extensive damage
00:58:23to the underside of that cockpit. Yeah, you can see right
00:58:25through. You can see the truck through the front
00:58:27of the cockpit. Good gracious.
00:58:29Ooh, don't like that at all.
00:58:31No, sir.
00:58:33How about your crash testing?
00:58:35Well, that would be in the nose area.
00:58:37How would it get all the way through
00:58:39the bulkhead to the footwell?
00:58:43Let's take another break and return to Barcelona.
00:58:49Welcome back to Barcelona and there is
00:58:51the best news of the day as Heikki Kovalainen
00:58:53waves to the crowd.
00:58:55But his left foot looks broken
00:58:57to me. Now here is
00:58:59the onboard camera. Watch the left
00:59:01front wheel assembly.
00:59:03Keep your eye around there.
00:59:05I think, guys, I mean,
00:59:07you know, it's
00:59:09second-guessing, but I would
00:59:11expect that was a rim failure
00:59:13as opposed to anything else. It looked to me like
00:59:15a section of the rim itself
00:59:17broke away before the rotor damage
00:59:19and before damage to the suspension.
00:59:21You just see a flash of
00:59:23steel right there.
00:59:25Bits flying through
00:59:27the air, oddly similar to
00:59:29the accident that Lewis Hamilton
00:59:31had at the Nürburgring last year
00:59:33in practice where the right front
00:59:35tore itself
00:59:37apart. Safety car is off
00:59:39and here we go once again. Green
00:59:41in Barcelona, Raikkonen, Massa,
00:59:43Hamilton, Kubica, Heidfeld,
00:59:45Alonso, Weber, Trulli,
00:59:47Rosberg and Nakajima, the top ten.
00:59:49Expect Nick Heidfeld into the pits to serve
00:59:51a penalty for pitting and taking
00:59:53fuel under the yellow.
00:59:55Well, of course, doubt
00:59:57a battalion team are going to be questioning themselves
00:59:59should we in fact bring Lewis Hamilton in.
01:00:01Well, I wonder if there's a case, as we saw
01:00:03in the Nürburgring last year, of the wheel not
01:00:05correctly mounted on the hub and it just
01:00:07machined a hole in itself. But it lasted
01:00:09for such a long time, didn't it? I mean, in his
01:00:11case, last year, it was on the opening
01:00:13lap out for qualifying.
01:00:15Well, I don't know. As a
01:00:17driver, David, and seeing that, the teams
01:00:19obviously informing their drivers
01:00:21how do you keep your confidence up now?
01:00:23Well, it's not very easy, I tell you. It's a bit of a
01:00:25it's not exactly a confidence booster.
01:00:27No, I bet. But
01:00:29you also tend to think, well,
01:00:31it will be all right, you know. They'll say,
01:00:33well, we think it was okay.
01:00:35It was a rogue rim.
01:00:37It was a rogue rim, but...
01:00:39See, from an engineering perspective, the teams
01:00:41are incredibly keen to keep the rims,
01:00:43the wheels of the car, as light
01:00:45as possible because it is what's known as
01:00:47unsprung mass. It's weight of the
01:00:49car outside.
01:00:51Anything of this area of the car is outside
01:00:53the control of the springs and the dampers
01:00:55assembly built onto the car.
01:00:57So you have to keep these parts of the
01:00:59car as lightweight as possible because
01:01:01you have no suspension control
01:01:03over them. It's what's known as unsprung
01:01:05mass. You need to keep everything
01:01:07absolutely ultralight in that area
01:01:09to gain performance
01:01:11out of the car.
01:01:12Kovalainen becomes the sixth car
01:01:14out of the Spanish Grand Prix. We'll have an update
01:01:16on his medical condition tonight on the Speed
01:01:18Report, so join us for that.
01:01:19He certainly was waving, which
01:01:21I was a bit worried, you know, when you go underneath
01:01:23a barrier like that or underneath those tyres
01:01:25that he might have got struck in the head. Well,
01:01:27obviously, he was perfectly okay there.
01:01:30But I didn't like the way he could see through the floor
01:01:32of the car. No. I mean, I'm
01:01:34hoping that what we're seeing there was a little
01:01:36bit of an optical illusion caused by the fact that the nose
01:01:38was off the car. But, you know, I tend to agree
01:01:40with you that maybe there was more damage to the chassis
01:01:42than met the eye there.
01:01:45Oh, boy. But thank goodness it was a tyre
01:01:47barrier and not a barrier barrier. Yeah.
01:01:50Because it was a pretty straight impact.
01:01:52I remember talking to a couple of engineers
01:01:54actually about two years ago about
01:01:56the strength of the
01:01:58rims. And some of the teams are
01:02:00so concerned about how lightweight the rims
01:02:02are these days because of the unsprung mass
01:02:04that if they've had a tyre fitted
01:02:06and they take a tyre off for any reason,
01:02:08they will not reuse the rim
01:02:10until it's been taken back to the factory
01:02:12and x-rayed to make sure that all is okay.
01:02:14That's just from a standard
01:02:16tyre fitting procedure.
01:02:18They will x-ray it every time
01:02:20it's used. Spent about six laps
01:02:22behind the safety car. There you
01:02:24see the penalty for Nick
01:02:26Heidfeld, refueling with the pit lane closed.
01:02:28In your discussions with the engineers, Steve,
01:02:30do you get any indication of how much fuel
01:02:32you save by tootling around behind
01:02:34the safety car for a significant number of laps?
01:02:36Yeah. It depends on track to track, but
01:02:38typically it's about 30%.
01:02:40In layman terms, you know, you gain
01:02:42a lap for every three you can run behind the car,
01:02:44behind the safety car.
01:02:47Okay.
01:02:50Well, Nick Heidfeld now running
01:02:52fifth behind his teammate, but of course
01:02:54he's going to have to serve that penalty,
01:02:56which is going to drop him way down the field,
01:02:58unfortunately for him. I'm surprised he didn't just dive
01:03:00immediately into the pit lane after the track
01:03:02went green. You have to serve the penalty under
01:03:04green, which his team have reminded him of
01:03:06over the radio
01:03:08while we were in break. Yeah, and there's
01:03:10no advantage in trying to just burn a little bit more
01:03:12fuel off the car before you come in
01:03:14because you're not allowed to work
01:03:16on the car during a
01:03:1810-second stop-go penalty.
01:03:20You have to serve it in your pit box, but you're not
01:03:22allowed to actually gain any performance
01:03:24or gain an advantage by the team
01:03:26working on the car during that period.
01:03:28And this will put Nico Rosberg, who we're looking at here,
01:03:30that will put him into the points just behind
01:03:32Trulli there. Nico Rosberg's done a stellar
01:03:34job. He qualified way down
01:03:36in 15th
01:03:38and he's now up to
01:03:409th. His teammate
01:03:42is 10th, who did such a
01:03:44stellar job in qualifying, 12th.
01:03:46So, Rosberg is going to pick up
01:03:48into the points-paying positions after
01:03:50Heidfeld serves his penalty.
01:03:56So, there you see the Toyota and then the Williams
01:03:58following it with the Toyota engine.
01:04:04Heidfeld has to be careful
01:04:06he doesn't trip over the rule requiring you to
01:04:08report to the pits for your penalty
01:04:10within a certain amount of time.
01:04:12I believe it's three laps
01:04:14before you... I tend to agree with you, Bob.
01:04:16I'm sure they've got a handle on that.
01:04:18Massive crowd. It's just fantastic, isn't it?
01:04:20Unfortunately, they're kind of
01:04:22sitting on their hands right now with Alonso back in
01:04:246th. He'll move up to 7th
01:04:26if Heidfeld pulls in. I remember
01:04:28the early days of the Spanish Grand Prix down at
01:04:30Jerez and the early days here at
01:04:32Barcelona in 91-92. You wouldn't see
01:04:34anybody in the crowd.
01:04:36You know, it's a standing joke that if you ever got caught
01:04:38for speeding around in Spain, the penalty was to attend
01:04:40the Grand Prix.
01:04:42Spain is mad for motorcycles.
01:04:44We are so proud of the efforts
01:04:46of guys like Dani Pedrosa.
01:04:48They will absolutely pack racetracks
01:04:50when the bikes are in town.
01:04:52Even though Fernando Alonso becomes
01:04:54the 12th Spaniard to appear
01:04:56in a Grand Prix car, he has pretty much
01:04:58single-handedly raised the profile of
01:05:00Formula 1 in his native country
01:05:02to the point where they now have two races.
01:05:04We have that exciting new street circuit
01:05:06in Valencia coming up later this year.
01:05:08Well, of course, two-time world champion
01:05:10will tend to do that. It's not like he's just won the odd race.
01:05:12I mean, you know, two-time world champion
01:05:14with a huge 19 victories.
01:05:16Yep.
01:05:24Nico Rosberg kind of bouncing back
01:05:26after an off-weekend in Bahrain
01:05:28three weeks ago.
01:05:30Bit of a surprise to see
01:05:32Kaz Nakajima, or Kazoo, as David
01:05:34likes to call him,
01:05:36out-qualifying Rosberg
01:05:38this weekend.
01:05:40Very surprising. And they came here
01:05:42after the test. They thought they were going to make
01:05:44some positive ground.
01:05:46But so far, not as good as they thought.
01:05:48Right now, Rosberg
01:05:50has the edge on his teammate.
01:05:52Rosberg 9th, Nakajima 10th, as you watch
01:05:54truly.
01:05:56Hamilton is still only 9 tenths
01:05:58behind Felipe Massa.
01:06:00Robert Kubica 1.6 seconds behind him.
01:06:06But no doubt Hamilton waiting for
01:06:08some sort of guidance for the team.
01:06:10This racetrack
01:06:12back in 2005 was the last time
01:06:14Jarno Trulli finished on the podium
01:06:1651 races ago.
01:06:18He'd like to end that drought today.
01:06:22Well, the air just went out of the balloon
01:06:24in the biggest possible way here
01:06:26at the Circuit de Catalunya.
01:06:28There you see
01:06:30Fernando Alonso pulling his car
01:06:32to the side of the road.
01:06:34Done.
01:06:36Out of the Spanish Grand Prix.
01:06:38Hands being thrown in the air
01:06:40in the grandstands.
01:06:42He's got a fire at the back.
01:06:44Gone now.
01:06:46Oh no, there it is. Got a big one.
01:06:48Casually getting out.
01:06:50Not too worried about it.
01:06:52But devastatingly disappointing
01:06:54for this vast crowd and of course
01:06:56very disappointing for Renault.
01:06:58They came in here with such high hopes.
01:07:00He was qualified
01:07:02right down the front row and of course
01:07:04Piquet was 10th.
01:07:06The crowd giving him a hand.
01:07:08Well he did all he could possibly do
01:07:10and quite frankly I think Renault
01:07:12did all they could possibly do as well this weekend.
01:07:14I mean they really found true
01:07:16pace in the car.
01:07:18Yeah, he came in a couple of laps
01:07:20before the Ferraris but
01:07:22he was still being able to put some pretty competitive
01:07:24times together. Certainly the start of the Grand Prix.
01:07:26That was definitely a cablamo.
01:07:28Flavio Briatore can't believe it.
01:07:30That was it.
01:07:32Listen to the engine.
01:07:38Man, that'll do it.
01:07:40Like a beautiful orchestra that suddenly
01:07:42stops listening to each other.
01:07:44All that nasty rattling going on.
01:07:48Expensive rattling that is.
01:07:56Sorry Flav.
01:07:58And he's not the only one.
01:08:00And he's not the only one.
01:08:02There's a look briefly into the Honda garage
01:08:04where Rubens Barrichello has climbed out
01:08:06and called it a day.
01:08:10We're still not quite sure why
01:08:12that wing was deranged as he left
01:08:14the pit lane. Whether it got hit by
01:08:16the jack or whether it got hit by
01:08:18the uh...
01:08:20They become the 7th.
01:08:22The Toyota as they left the pit.
01:08:247th and 8th cars out of the race.
01:08:26While Kimi Raikkonen
01:08:28keeps cruising serenely along.
01:08:30He has the fast lap at 121.827.
01:08:32Set back on lap 17.
01:08:36Gently.
01:08:38Yeah.
01:08:42Meanwhile, Kimi Raikkonen's
01:08:44last lap, 120 through
01:08:462.362.
01:08:48So he's dialed it back a little bit.
01:08:50There's his teammate Masa, firmly under control.
01:08:54And the new 3rd place man,
01:08:56the McLaren.
01:08:58Nick Heidfeld has been
01:09:00in and out of the pits to serve his penalty.
01:09:02And boy, oh boy, that 10 seconds
01:09:04seemed to take forever.
01:09:06Oh, didn't it ever.
01:09:08So Heidfeld is now 14th.
01:09:10Having moved up with the retirements
01:09:12of Barrichello and Alonso.
01:09:14That'll be a serious blow to their World Championship
01:09:16constructors' points because
01:09:18if things finish as they are at the moment,
01:09:20Robert Kubic is obviously going to pick up some points.
01:09:22They were hoping that Heidfeld will pick up some as well.
01:09:24And Hamilton looked pretty racy
01:09:26there after the restart,
01:09:28after the safety car, but
01:09:30Masa has definitely drawn away now.
01:09:32He's a couple of seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton, so
01:09:34the fight seems to have
01:09:36gone out of the McLaren. And I'm wondering
01:09:38still, what Hamilton
01:09:40and the team are thinking after that
01:09:42breakage on Kovalainen's
01:09:44car. And what will Robert Kubica
01:09:46in 4th in the BMW Sauber be able to do
01:09:48with that? He's just 1.8 seconds behind
01:09:50Hamilton. We'll have to watch that gap.
01:09:52Mark Weber is now 5th,
01:09:54Jarno Trulli 6th, Nico Rosberg
01:09:567th, and teammate Kaz Nakajima
01:09:58is 8th.
01:10:00Those are the points positions right now.
01:10:02Takuma Sato in the Super Aguri Honda.
01:10:04About 4.5 seconds behind Nakajima.
01:10:06What would it be like if Sato
01:10:08were able to pick up a point
01:10:10for Super Aguri in what may be their
01:10:12final Grand Prix? That would be awesome.
01:10:14That'd be sweet.
01:10:16There you see how quickly Lewis Hamilton is losing
01:10:18ground to the leader Kimi Raikkonen.
01:10:20Over 3 tenths of a second a lap.
01:10:22Oh, pretty gruesome
01:10:24reading. And Robert Kubica
01:10:26not that far behind Lewis Hamilton.
01:10:28Putting the pressure on now. Maybe he knows
01:10:30that Lewis Hamilton just a little bit
01:10:32could be just a little bit leery of his car.
01:10:34Yeah. He saw what happened.
01:10:36He's heard what's happened from his pits.
01:10:38So really piling the pressure on now.
01:10:42And there's very little from the engineers
01:10:44perspective that they can do
01:10:46really to give comfort to the driver
01:10:48other than to say, well, Guy, you're
01:10:50driving the car. If you
01:10:52feel that you're unhappy with the car, you feel
01:10:54unconfident with it, then reduce speed
01:10:56or come in. But you only get a millisecond
01:10:58if it's a rim failure. You're not going to feel
01:11:00and there's no time really.
01:11:02It'll just go. Bang! And you're in the wall.
01:11:04Well, Kubica picked up a tenth of a
01:11:06second that lap. He's now 1.7 seconds
01:11:08behind. Was 1.8.
01:11:1028 laps to go.
01:11:14Tonight on Speed. Step into the wind tunnel with Dave
01:11:16to Spain. Hear the opinions.
01:11:18Any topic is fair game. Tonight
01:11:20Dave will be joined by former Formula
01:11:22One driver for Toyota, Cristiano
01:11:24Da Mata. Also a champ car champion.
01:11:26Should be great. Don't miss it.
01:11:28Wind tunnel with Dave to Spain tonight at 9pm
01:11:30Eastern. Takuma Sato
01:11:32into the pits from ninth.
01:11:36Well, you know, they're putting him onto the hard tires
01:11:38there. And a lot of fuel going in.
01:11:40I think they're setting about a
01:11:42long run here.
01:11:44It's a long stop.
01:11:46It's very long.
01:11:48I wonder if they had a problem with one of the rear wheels.
01:11:50I mean, he didn't need that much fuel.
01:11:52No, I think he obviously had some sort of problem. That's a shame
01:11:54because that'll
01:11:56scupper their strategy.
01:12:00But this point you bring up,
01:12:02David, about BMW and the Constructors
01:12:04points and Heidfeld having to serve that stop-go
01:12:06penalty. It is something that the teams
01:12:08are concerned about and have been talking about
01:12:10it with Charlie because they're kind
01:12:12of caught between a rock and a hard place. If it's a safety
01:12:14car period and you're going to
01:12:16run out of fuel, what can
01:12:18we do? We've got to come in and
01:12:20refuel. Then you're going to hit us with
01:12:22a stop-go penalty, which is going to
01:12:24wreck our race. But it's not really
01:12:26anything we can have any control over.
01:12:30I suppose the FIA, if they really wanted
01:12:32to, could say, well, we don't design your cars.
01:12:34You could build whatever size fuel tank you want
01:12:36in there. Yeah, but of course you don't
01:12:38know when the safety car is going to come out.
01:12:40They could just say, well, they
01:12:42will say, they'll just say, well, come in earlier then.
01:12:44Yeah, come in earlier and put more fuel
01:12:46and build a car with a bigger tank.
01:12:48Easy for them to say.
01:12:50Alonso makes the walk home.
01:12:54Now Lewis Hamilton's mirror
01:12:56is getting fuller and fuller of that
01:12:58white BMW Sauber of Robert Kubica.
01:13:02That's only the second time that both runners have
01:13:04retired from a race in the last 26
01:13:06races. Brazil, 2007.
01:13:10On board now is Sato.
01:13:22Yes, yes, yes, you can.
01:13:24And that'll get us
01:13:26into ninth place.
01:13:28Yeah.
01:13:30One more unexpected retirement ahead of that.
01:13:34You could be in the points, Sato.
01:13:41There's Kubica.
01:13:47No change in the gap to Hamilton
01:13:49that time by. According to timing
01:13:51and scoring. Gone up just a little bit again.
01:13:55Hamilton just done the fastest
01:13:57first sector at 22.2.
01:14:02Pretty evenly matched.
01:14:04I'd say so.
01:14:11Lewis is upping the ante
01:14:13a little bit. He just went purple. Fastest
01:14:15of all in sector one.
01:14:19That's where his teammate went off.
01:14:29Pretty good sector two.
01:14:33That's a funny place to take
01:14:35a lower gear right on the apex of that
01:14:37tight corner. I've noticed everybody does that.
01:14:41That's why they don't get into the gear
01:14:43in that lower, into the corner in that lower gear
01:14:45to begin with, unless wheel spin is a concern.
01:14:53There's a great look at this long, long
01:14:55straight as you come out of that final sector.
01:15:01That's why a lot of the guys
01:15:03lose so much time in that final sector,
01:15:05which is really the tight, winding part of the track,
01:15:07because you just lose so much time
01:15:10by carrying the wing to give you a good third sector.
01:15:12You need to trim it off prior to qualifying
01:15:14to give you good straight line speed.
01:15:17Well, of course, the Ferrari this year, their package
01:15:19is so good. They seem to be able to have high speed
01:15:21and good downforce.
01:15:23It's something everybody else is struggling to get.
01:15:25Oh, no. Rosberg.
01:15:27Nico Rosberg from seventh.
01:15:29That'll move his teammate Kaz Nakajima up.
01:15:31Giancarlo Fisichello will take the eighth
01:15:33and final points-paying position.
01:15:35Boy, I didn't mean Rosberg's weekend at all.
01:15:37Well, I'll tell you what we were just talking about.
01:15:39Sato needed a retirement ahead of him,
01:15:41and there it is.
01:15:42Ninth car out of the race.
01:15:44Boy, the attrition here has been brutal.
01:15:48Well, at least that's a short one.
01:15:50It's the longest walk home
01:15:52after a thing like that, but that was a very short
01:15:54walk home for Nico Rosberg.
01:15:58Not a good weekend for him all around.
01:16:03Let's see what happens.
01:16:05It's under the engine.
01:16:12Piston broke.
01:16:14Something zigged when it should have zagged.
01:16:18When you think of the speed at which those pistons
01:16:20are going up and down, and all those little valves
01:16:22are flapping open, it's a wonder the thing
01:16:24the whole thing is so staggering
01:16:26that they work at all.
01:16:28There's tons of pressure per square inch.
01:16:31Daschmochen out of the Alps.
01:16:34On the right side,
01:16:36it's the Japanese engine.
01:16:42OK, send your cards and letters
01:16:44to David Hobbs, care of
01:16:46some place other than
01:16:48Speed Channel, because they'll wind up on my desk.
01:16:50We'll take a break and return.
01:16:5224 laps to go, and another round
01:16:54of pit stops coming in Spain.
01:16:59Welcome back to Spain.
01:17:01Bob Varsha, David Hobbs, Peter Windsor,
01:17:03Steve Matchett with you.
01:17:05We saw a brief replay there of Felipe Massa
01:17:07waving a Jensen button as he lapped him.
01:17:09Meanwhile, Michael Schumacher looking on.
01:17:12Here is Jarno Trulli.
01:17:17Oh, sorry, Timo Glock.
01:17:21Nick Heidfeld bearing down
01:17:23on Glock, now just one second
01:17:25behind his fellow German.
01:17:27Here comes Fizzi Keller,
01:17:29pitting from P8.
01:17:31Looking to score a point
01:17:33for his team.
01:17:35Less than six seconds, about 5.8 seconds
01:17:37of fuel will get him the rest of the race distance.
01:17:39And we're right in that
01:17:41window now, boys, for this second pit stop.
01:17:43To our calculations, we have Raikkonen
01:17:45pitting on lap
01:17:4746, one lap
01:17:49ahead of Massa. Massa, we predict
01:17:51around 47, and Hamilton on 48.
01:17:5346, 47, 48,
01:17:55respectively for Raikkonen,
01:17:57Massa Hamilton.
01:17:59This will be the next three laps as Hamilton swings by the pit in.
01:18:01Massa just set
01:18:03fast lap of the race.
01:18:05First man other than his teammate, Kimi Raikkonen,
01:18:07to do that.
01:18:09And he's now four seconds
01:18:11ahead of
01:18:13Lewis Hamilton.
01:18:15Raikkonen just went
01:18:17purple in the third sector on his lap,
01:18:19which was a tenth slower than Massa's.
01:18:21Yeah, Massa's gonna have to
01:18:23play. He lost about half a second,
01:18:25Massa, on that last lap, getting balked.
01:18:27Obviously, Raikkonen and his engineer is gonna be
01:18:29aware of that, Chris Dyer.
01:18:31So Massa must respond now
01:18:33and close that gap down to Raikkonen as much as he can.
01:18:41This is turning into one of those races where you can see
01:18:43some surprising names in the points.
01:18:47Here comes Nick Heidfeld again for his
01:18:49second official stop,
01:18:51having made one previous official one
01:18:53to serve a penalty.
01:18:57Five and a half seconds of fuel.
01:18:59Good to go.
01:19:07Raikkonen fastest in sector two
01:19:09as Ferrari drivers get ready for their
01:19:11pit stops.
01:19:13Massa's last three laps were
01:19:15a 21.8 and then a
01:19:1722.5 where he got balked and then
01:19:19straight back down to a 21.8 again.
01:19:21That's gonna cost him dear.
01:19:23Massa's in the pits.
01:19:25From second.
01:19:29Hard compound tyres to comply
01:19:31with the regulations. 5.2
01:19:33seconds now is all we need.
01:19:37Here comes Mark Webber in behind him
01:19:39from fifth.
01:19:41Well, Mark Webber's had a good weekend, really.
01:19:43We haven't seen much of him, either in
01:19:45practice, qualifying or the race, but I mean
01:19:47he qualified well and he's running very well in the race.
01:19:49He appeared fifth at the moment.
01:19:51Jarno Trulli pits behind Webber from sixth
01:19:53as Massa rejoins.
01:19:57And Kimi Raikkonen clicks off
01:19:59a 1.21.670.
01:20:03Problems on the right front there.
01:20:09A long, long pit stop
01:20:11for Trulli. Yeah, the right
01:20:13front gun guy had to change his gun.
01:20:15But from that long shot it was
01:20:17difficult to see exactly what the problem was.
01:20:19Boy, that could cost him dearly, because
01:20:21Nakajima and
01:20:23Button are not that well
01:20:25buttoners, but Nakajima's not
01:20:27that far behind him, so that delay could cost
01:20:29him dearly. What must do for a
01:20:31driver, all that hard work to make up
01:20:33a few tenths here and there, and then
01:20:35what was supposed to be a seven-second pit stop
01:20:37becomes 11 seconds and you have it to do all over
01:20:39again. Here comes Raikkonen from the
01:20:41lead. Lap 46.
01:20:44Five seconds of fuel
01:20:46is all Raikkonen will need now to get the
01:20:48car the rest of the race distance.
01:20:52What are we doing?
01:20:54We've also got Hamilton and Kubica in.
01:20:56Hamilton is in. Hamilton.
01:20:58But of course they've got to come right down the end of the pit
01:21:00now. Yeah, they're right at the end of the pit
01:21:02lane, McLaren. Very close to pit out.
01:21:04Where's Massa on the track?
01:21:06The top three cars all pit on the same
01:21:08line. Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy. This is going to be a very
01:21:10quick stop. Yes, good.
01:21:12Here comes Massa. Ah, he's done it.
01:21:14Yep. Massa. Ferrari holds
01:21:16their one-two as Hamilton and
01:21:18Kubica resume in order.
01:21:24Now just to give a little explanation of why
01:21:26we're so interested in how long
01:21:28fuel delivery time is at the second
01:21:30pit stop. When we say, you know, we're talking about it
01:21:32takes 5.4 seconds of fuel to go the
01:21:34rest of the race distance down to 5.2.
01:21:36Yes, the teams and the drivers
01:21:38know how much fuel is going to go in the car,
01:21:40but they know when they're going to stop
01:21:42and we are not aware of where they're going to
01:21:44stop. So the advantage is, less
01:21:46time spent in the pits, it's
01:21:48the duration of the pit stop length
01:21:50relative to the opposition. So in
01:21:52that case, when Raikkonen is only stationary
01:21:54for 5 seconds of fuel to
01:21:56Massa's 5.2, there's a
01:21:580.2 advantage because the
01:22:00pit stop is shorter. Of course, the
01:22:02teams and the drivers know how much fuel they're going to need
01:22:04to get the rest of the race distance, and it matters
01:22:06not to the performance of the car if they stop
01:22:0810 laps or 15 laps. You're still going to need
01:22:10the same amount of fuel
01:22:12relative to how much is on board to start with,
01:22:14but it's the time spent in the pits
01:22:16as the laps tick down that gives
01:22:18a time advantage relative to the
01:22:20opposition. Like Kazuki
01:22:22Nakajima not only outqualified
01:22:24his more heralded teammate, Nico Rosberg
01:22:26here in Barcelona,
01:22:28with Rosberg out of the race,
01:22:30Nakajima is up in a very
01:22:32solid 5th place.
01:22:37Nakajima hasn't stopped for his second
01:22:39stop yet, Bob.
01:22:44Well, it's fun while it lasted.
01:22:52Fizikello with
01:22:54Heidfeld looming in the BMW.
01:22:57This is for 11th,
01:23:02but we're expecting people in front of them to stop,
01:23:04which will move them up,
01:23:06so this could be a race for points.
01:23:09And Dr. Mario Tyson want those points
01:23:11badly in that Constructors' Championship,
01:23:13which they're doing so well at the moment.
01:23:16Let's get back to Peter Windsor with more
01:23:18on the condition of Heikki Kovalainen after that
01:23:20big crash. Peter?
01:23:22Bob, yes, I've had a quick word to Mark Slade,
01:23:24Heikki's race engineer at Vodafone
01:23:26McLaren Mercedes. In typical
01:23:28engineering ease, he said
01:23:30that the telemetry showed a sudden loss of
01:23:32air pressure in the left front before he hit the tyre wall,
01:23:34which I think we all knew, but
01:23:36I said, is there any indication of exactly
01:23:38what failed? And he said at the moment,
01:23:40as you guys called it, it looks as if
01:23:42there was some sort of rim failure, but they're not
01:23:44exactly sure. Obviously, there was that sudden
01:23:46deflation. I asked if there was any news on Heikki's condition
01:23:48and they said they had been told
01:23:50that he was okay with no sort of injury at all,
01:23:52not even a mention of a wrist injury.
01:23:54Well, I suspect that
01:23:57may not be entirely true because that yellow
01:23:59helicopter was the Life Flight helicopter leaving
01:24:01the racetrack. We are told
01:24:03that Kovalainen is on board
01:24:06and will be checked out at a local hospital
01:24:08and his condition at this point is reported
01:24:10as stable.
01:24:14Well, these cars are so stout these days
01:24:16that hopefully the guy is
01:24:18totally unharmed and will be
01:24:20taking his place on the grid in two weeks' time
01:24:22in Turkey.
01:24:28Nick Heidfeld having a go at Fisica.
01:24:30The Force India cars
01:24:32went so well on Friday, looking very, very
01:24:34strong. Yesterday, they were qualified
01:24:36near the back, but again, you know,
01:24:38the field is closing up, which is a tremendous sign
01:24:40for Formula 1. I mean, they were only just over a second
01:24:42off the pace yesterday in qualifying.
01:24:44Fisica at the moment, holding old Nick Heidfeld
01:24:46off.
01:24:53So, Fisica, Force India,
01:24:55must be pretty happy with this, really.
01:24:58Fisica was bitterly disappointed
01:25:00at his qualifying performance here. He thought
01:25:02he could do a lot more in that Force India car
01:25:04and there may yet be. Stand by
01:25:06for more from Barcelona.
01:25:10Welcome back to Barcelona. There is
01:25:12Kaz Nakajima making his final pit stop
01:25:14for Williams Toyota with 15
01:25:16laps remaining. He pitted from
01:25:18fifth. Here's Timo Glock in the
01:25:20Toyota pits from ninth.
01:25:28Short pit stops now with only 15
01:25:30laps to go. It takes about
01:25:32three and a half,
01:25:343.6, 3.7 seconds
01:25:36to change four wheels and tyres on an F1 car
01:25:38now. We're getting down to that sort of range
01:25:40on fuel delivery. So, it's
01:25:42a pretty close call between who's going to be
01:25:44finished first, the wheel guys or the
01:25:46fuel guys.
01:25:54Nick Heidfeld not making
01:25:56much impression on
01:25:58Giancarlo Fisichella in the Force India
01:26:00car. So, you'd think the BMW
01:26:02would be a lot quicker. He doesn't seem to be much quicker
01:26:04down the straight, which is a bit strange to me.
01:26:06Apex speed. Look at that.
01:26:08He's slightly slower.
01:26:10A little bit.
01:26:14There's no question,
01:26:16David, in my eyes, that this Force India car
01:26:18is coming alive this year.
01:26:20I mean, it seems absolutely transformed.
01:26:22The team seems transformed.
01:26:24Yeah.
01:26:26Vast crowd on hand, but
01:26:28it's probably all pouring out of the gate now
01:26:30as Alonso is out.
01:26:32Oh, there you go.
01:26:34Well, David Coulthard is in the pits.
01:26:36From seventh.
01:26:40Would you put
01:26:42truly up to seventh?
01:26:44Probably Nakajima into eighth.
01:26:46This is an ugly chicane.
01:26:48These were a couple of really great corners before.
01:26:50Boy, oh boy.
01:26:54Nobody drove them better than Michael Schumacher.
01:26:56He's had so many amazing races here.
01:27:00Yeah, he is.
01:27:02He just can't quite manage it.
01:27:04Obviously trying to pressure Giancarlo Fisichella
01:27:06into a mistake.
01:27:08Oh, he's got it.
01:27:10He's got it.
01:27:12He's got it.
01:27:14Fisichella into a mistake.
01:27:16The straight needs to be about twice as long
01:27:18and he might just be able to
01:27:20pip him at the end of it.
01:27:22Here's Räikkönen, Massa,
01:27:24Hamilton,
01:27:26Kubica.
01:27:30I mean, Hamilton's not far out.
01:27:325.1 seconds.
01:27:34Oh, bits falling off everywhere.
01:27:38Timo Glock in front wing.
01:27:40Oh, yeah, look at the wing.
01:27:42Filter.
01:27:44Damage is on the right front.
01:27:48David Coulthard just doesn't seem to be able
01:27:50to get away from the scene of an accident.
01:27:52That's three this year.
01:27:54Big one in
01:27:56Australia.
01:27:58Two weeks ago, three weeks ago in Bahrain
01:28:00with his pal.
01:28:02Now let's keep an eye on this.
01:28:04Look at the right front.
01:28:06Coulthard's up ahead.
01:28:08Damage to the end plate and the main plane.
01:28:10That's Glock's fault.
01:28:12He just ran right in the back of him.
01:28:16David Coulthard.
01:28:18I think David made a mistake.
01:28:20I know you can't miss gears in these cars,
01:28:22but he certainly suddenly slowed up
01:28:24and Glock tried to capitalize,
01:28:26but David Coulthard was having none of it
01:28:28and blocked him badly there
01:28:30and he ran right in the back of him.
01:28:32This is from Coulthard's POV point of view.
01:28:34Oh, this is paying into Sato's hands.
01:28:36We were thinking, you know,
01:28:38here comes Glock for a replacement wing.
01:28:42Jarno Trulli is in and out of the pits
01:28:44as Glock makes his appearance.
01:28:48David Coulthard.
01:28:50Now he's wobbling.
01:28:54No good deed goes unpunished.
01:28:58So more help for Sato.
01:29:02David Coulthard had that big accident
01:29:04with his good friend Jensen Button
01:29:06in Bahrain three weeks ago
01:29:08and they had Button blame D.C. publicly
01:29:10and then D.C. came here to Spain
01:29:12and said, Button apologized to me afterwards
01:29:14saying he just lost control.
01:29:16But D.C. also fired a shot publicly
01:29:18over his fellow driver's bowels
01:29:20when he said, if anybody just expects me
01:29:22to move aside when I'm overtaken,
01:29:24it's not going to happen.
01:29:26I wonder if maybe D.C. is just getting
01:29:28a little frustrated here in the twilight.
01:29:30You can see Glock coming there.
01:29:32He obviously made a mistake coming off that corner
01:29:34and just plant himself right in the middle of the road
01:29:36and old Glocky didn't take the required
01:29:40maneuver to miss him.
01:29:42There's always plenty of blame to go around.
01:29:44While we're watching, D.C. really struggling
01:29:46to get back. We've just seen Button
01:29:48into the pits and out.
01:29:50He's stopped.
01:29:52Here's the running order on screen and the way things are going
01:29:54it may be the entire field that's running.
01:29:56Oh, here goes Heidfeld going past Fisichalla
01:29:58doing the outside pass
01:30:00at turn one.
01:30:02Oh!
01:30:04Well, he was alongside.
01:30:06I mean, it's up to Fisichalla
01:30:08to do exactly what he did.
01:30:10That's how you're supposed to pass people. That was a professional pass.
01:30:14It probably wouldn't have happened
01:30:16with David Coulthard.
01:30:18He would have, using his theory,
01:30:20if anybody thinks they're going to just pass me easily,
01:30:22they'd better look.
01:30:24Meanwhile, his teammate, Mark Webber,
01:30:26having handily outqualified him,
01:30:28is running in sixth spot.
01:30:30Long, long.
01:30:32It looked like the left front.
01:30:34Fifth spot, Webber, after Button
01:30:36had just stopped.
01:30:38But on to the soft compound tyres now.
01:30:40There goes Webber.
01:30:42Putting his teammate a lap down.
01:30:44Well, I mean, you can just
01:30:46put the pressure on
01:30:48and see what happens.
01:30:50I mean, you can see
01:30:52and you can just put the
01:30:54press statements by the two
01:30:56Red Bull Renault teammates, side by side.
01:30:58And David will say, well, the car won't do this,
01:31:00won't do that, won't do the other.
01:31:02Webber says, well, the car's fine.
01:31:04You see the pass of Heidfeld.
01:31:06Fisichalla hugging the inside line
01:31:08to try and keep him at bay.
01:31:10But Heidfeld, not to be denied, goes woogie.
01:31:12Wow.
01:31:14Fisichalla had to just lift a little tiny bit there.
01:31:16And sailboat racing.
01:31:18That's a defensive tack, taking the wind
01:31:20out of Heidfeld.
01:31:22This is what I say.
01:31:24You've got to make that last corner good.
01:31:26And Fisichalla, unfortunately, went a bit wide.
01:31:28And Heidfeld capitalized on it.
01:31:30Came off the corner well.
01:31:32Pulled alongside.
01:31:34And then snicks across the bow of Fisichalla.
01:31:36He doesn't take much, does he?
01:31:38The tiniest little bobble.
01:31:40Well, of course, that's one of the problems
01:31:42with Formula 1.
01:31:44People say, oh, not much overtaking.
01:31:46But these cars are all so evenly matched.
01:31:49Meanwhile,
01:31:51Ferrari's in lockstep out front.
01:31:532.7 seconds separating
01:31:55Kimi Räikkönen from Felipe Massa.
01:31:57We'll be back.
01:32:01Welcome back to Barcelona in replay.
01:32:05We see the collision between
01:32:07David Coulthard and Timo Glock.
01:32:09And as you see at the bottom of your screen,
01:32:11officials will investigate.
01:32:15That cannot be good news for David Coulthard.
01:32:18Meanwhile, this guy, Lewis Hamilton,
01:32:20with eight laps remaining,
01:32:22has closed up on
01:32:24Felipe Massa slightly
01:32:26and is running several tenths of a second
01:32:28quicker that is
01:32:30on each lap.
01:32:32We see Hamilton for the outside.
01:32:34It's a Ferrari 1-2. Hamilton in third.
01:32:36Moments ago, our Peter Windsor spoke with
01:32:38McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh
01:32:40about Heikki Kovalainen
01:32:42and his heavy accident.
01:32:45Martin, I wonder if we could have an update,
01:32:47first of all, on Heikki's condition.
01:32:49Yeah, Heikki has just been flown to hospital
01:32:51for checks. He banged his head
01:32:53and had some concussion.
01:32:55So I think the right thing is to do all those
01:32:57precautions, make sure there's no
01:32:59lasting damage there. The rest of his body,
01:33:01I mean, he's banged his elbow, he knows that.
01:33:03But that's, I think, quite normal in that sort of
01:33:05an accident. But there's no visible sign
01:33:07of damage or injury. So as far as we
01:33:09can tell, if all goes well with
01:33:11the checks, hospital, he'll be fine.
01:33:13That's very much what we've been concentrating on
01:33:15the last half an hour.
01:33:16Very, very good news to hear that.
01:33:18Very early days, but any thoughts on the cause of the accident?
01:33:20Well, in truth, again, I've been
01:33:22concentrating on Heikki, but what I do
01:33:24know is that from the data
01:33:26we know there's a sudden deflation of the tyre.
01:33:28I stress, I don't believe,
01:33:30we don't believe that it was a tyre failure.
01:33:32It was a rim failure
01:33:34by looks of things. We haven't got the parts
01:33:36back yet in its early days, as you say.
01:33:38The rim failure was not
01:33:40a classic structural failure.
01:33:43It appears that a piece of the rim was machined
01:33:45off, possibly by debris
01:33:47or stone within the
01:33:49wheel. But when we get the
01:33:51parts back, we'll be able to analyse that.
01:33:53Thanks very much, Martin. Thank you.
01:33:56I guess they'll send someone out to the scene of the accident
01:33:58and see if they can pick up a few things.
01:34:01I'm sure they will. Of course, the clearances
01:34:03on these cars are so fantastically small.
01:34:05You know, if you go inside the wheel there, the brake
01:34:07rotor, the brake
01:34:09caliper. And of course, all it does
01:34:11is one of these gravel traps or any bit of
01:34:13dirt. You see, when they go over the edge here, this stuff
01:34:15picks up, gets jammed between the rotor
01:34:17and the, between the caliper
01:34:19and the rim. I mean, this machine is often heartbeat
01:34:21steep. Yeah, absolutely. Something we talk about
01:34:23quite often, isn't it, when we see drivers going into
01:34:25the gravel traps and the mechanics
01:34:27don't like clearing the gravel out
01:34:29of the car afterwards. But it is
01:34:31a problem because one of those pieces of
01:34:33flint or something from the gravel trap just becomes
01:34:35a machining tool. And
01:34:37you're absolutely right, David. It just machined itself
01:34:39straight through the rim and
01:34:41turned it into two parts.
01:34:43The order is Raikkonen
01:34:45and Massa out front, then Hamilton,
01:34:47Kubica, Weber, Button, Nakajima
01:34:49and Trulli. Jarno Trulli in the
01:34:51Toyota in the eighth and final points
01:34:53paying position. Peter Windsor has more on Trulli.
01:34:55Thanks, Bob.
01:34:57Yes, Jarno Trulli, by all rights, should be running
01:34:59sixth in the position now occupied by
01:35:01Jenson Button. I've just been down to the
01:35:03Toyota garage to ask why he came in for that
01:35:05third stop, that third unscheduled stop.
01:35:07And they said they don't know. And we can
01:35:09only assume that you were talking
01:35:11before the race. We were all talking before the race about how
01:35:13bad the radio frequencies are here because of
01:35:15the presence of royalty. And it
01:35:17looks as if Jarno got some sort of cross
01:35:19signal, some miscommunication, came in down
01:35:21the pit lane. They didn't change anything
01:35:23on the car and he went straight out again. So
01:35:25he's dropped from six to eight. But the
01:35:27advantage there, of course, going to Honda now. Jenson
01:35:29Button occupying sixth place.
01:35:31We saw David
01:35:33Kulthar making an attempt to get around
01:35:35Takuma Sato, who again
01:35:37was taking David's words to heart
01:35:39and not making overtaking easy.
01:35:41These guys are not racing for point at
01:35:43the moment, but they are running for
01:35:45twelfth spot. Of course, as we know,
01:35:47anything can happen towards the end of these races
01:35:49and it could happen. Now, I just
01:35:51put that little telestrator circle around Sato's
01:35:53car. The front of the nose is
01:35:55damaged, look, right here. The absolute point
01:35:57of the Aguri's nose has already
01:35:59come into contact with something or somebody
01:36:01at an earlier stage.
01:36:03Boost.
01:36:05And you see some of those antennae
01:36:07so important to these cars.
01:36:09The Honda Powerplant
01:36:11and the Super Aguri, the Renault and the Red Bull
01:36:13seem to be pretty evenly matched.
01:36:25Six races to go and perhaps the last race
01:36:27for that man, Aguri Suzuki
01:36:29and his team.
01:36:31Boy, I hope not. I really do.
01:36:33I think one of the big problems for Aguri
01:36:35is the rewriting
01:36:37of the sporting regulations to insist
01:36:39that all the constructors are
01:36:41exactly that. Constructors in their own
01:36:43right, which I must say I'm absolutely
01:36:45100% in favor of, that the teams
01:36:47must design, manufacture,
01:36:49test and race their own design.
01:36:51And of course, that is an expensive
01:36:53process, but Formula One is an expensive
01:36:55sport and I think that is what is
01:36:57going to be the biggest problem
01:36:59for a junior team like these guys at the back of the
01:37:01field is finding the finances to become
01:37:03a constructor. That's right, they thought they had
01:37:05that financing courtesy of
01:37:07the Magma Group in London using
01:37:09sources from Dubai, but apparently
01:37:11that deal went away and though the team
01:37:13says they're still negotiating with Magma
01:37:15Group and some others and they hope
01:37:17to continue in Istanbul in two weeks
01:37:19as Coulthard looks down the inside.
01:37:21For now, it appears
01:37:23that Super Aguri Honda
01:37:25may be done
01:37:27in Formula One. Let's hope not. We'll be back.
01:37:31Welcome back to
01:37:33Barcelona. Still a good crowd there, but
01:37:35you can see spaces forming on the
01:37:37hillside, some of the grandstands emptying
01:37:39with hometown hero
01:37:41Fernando Alonso out of the
01:37:43Spanish Grand Prix. Now let's take a
01:37:45closer look at David Coulthard's little dice
01:37:47with Takuma Sato of
01:37:49the Super Aguri Honda.
01:37:51Coming down to La Casha.
01:37:53And this is a demonstration
01:37:55by Sato of how to be
01:37:57overtaken.
01:38:01No points slamming down onto the front wheel
01:38:03of David Coulthard there, because it's taken
01:38:05both out, but Coulthard
01:38:07gets by. Sato doing a great
01:38:09job, and remember that Sato's on the hard compound
01:38:11tyres. Coulthard, because of the
01:38:13fact he came into the pits, has
01:38:15refitted the car,
01:38:17or mechanics has refitted soft tyres onto the car,
01:38:19so he obviously had an advantage over
01:38:21the Super Aguri chassis.
01:38:23Hard compound here on Lewis
01:38:25Hamilton's McLaren Mercedes, 1.6
01:38:27seconds behind second place
01:38:29Felipe Massa. There you see the Ferraris
01:38:31in the distance. Lewis Hamilton
01:38:33hanging in there. You don't know
01:38:35how much the Ferraris at this stage are just
01:38:37holding back, you know, they don't have to go,
01:38:39but I mean, Hamilton is really putting his all
01:38:41into this. He's struggling away, he's driving
01:38:43hard, you see a lot of steering input, he's
01:38:45trying desperately hard, and of course you've just
01:38:47got to keep on going. Only two laps to go,
01:38:49I know, but you're just never
01:38:51back. No, you're right, and if McLaren's
01:38:53engineers and the drivers
01:38:55feeling confident, if the McLaren engineers
01:38:57feel that their car is strong, then you
01:38:59must take the fight to Ferrari, because
01:39:01if they are nursing any potential
01:39:03problem on their cars, they will do
01:39:05everything to try and mask that
01:39:07from the opposition, of course.
01:39:09So you have to keep pushing the
01:39:11car and taking the fight
01:39:13to them to try and show any potential
01:39:15weakness. Michie Keller doing a grand job
01:39:17there, being lapped, letting them all by
01:39:19with the least possible interruption.
01:39:21And there again,
01:39:23there's Felipe Massa, and here's
01:39:25Hamilton just right behind him, here's Robert Kubica,
01:39:27who's hung right in there all the time.
01:39:29Just shows how important the
01:39:31start is at these races. I mean, Hamilton's got
01:39:33that position on the start,
01:39:35and he's held it ever since. If he had started
01:39:37behind him, he probably would never have
01:39:39gone around him. The Ferraris have
01:39:41more good news. They are on the second race,
01:39:43the end of their two race-required
01:39:45engine cycles, so they'll have fresh engines
01:39:47in the cars for the
01:39:49Turkish Grand Prix in two weeks.
01:39:51And Kimi Raikkonen will
01:39:53become the eighth straight pole sitter
01:39:55to win the Spanish Grand Prix here
01:39:57at Barcelona. You have to go all the way back to
01:39:59Jarama in 1981
01:40:01to find the last time a driver
01:40:03from off the front row won the
01:40:05Spanish Grand Prix. That was Gilles
01:40:07Villeneuve, and what a piece of
01:40:09defensive driving. If you can find
01:40:11video or film of that race,
01:40:13Villeneuve and his Ferrari
01:40:15kept four, five, six cars
01:40:17behind him, corner after corner,
01:40:19lap after lap. At the end, it was
01:40:21Villeneuve, Jacques Lafitte, and Léger,
01:40:23John Watson's McLaren, Carlos Reutemann's
01:40:25Williams, and Elio de Angelis
01:40:27in his Lotus, among others, all
01:40:29less than a second and a quarter
01:40:31behind Jacques Villeneuve.
01:40:33I mean, Gilles Villeneuve, I should say.
01:40:35It was the final Grand Prix
01:40:37victory of Villeneuve's career, his sixth.
01:40:39Well, this is
01:40:41a good 10 points here.
01:40:44Put him well at the top of the table.
01:40:50Well, you just get the feeling that
01:40:52Raikkonen has
01:40:54extra speed in hand here.
01:40:56He suffered from an ear infection
01:40:58three weeks ago in Bahrain.
01:41:00He didn't use it as an excuse.
01:41:02In fact, the Finn didn't even mention
01:41:04it before the race,
01:41:06which was dominated by his teammate Massa.
01:41:10This is when Lewis Hamilton, of course,
01:41:12was regretting that terrible
01:41:14weekend in Bahrain.
01:41:16Final corner for Kimi Raikkonen,
01:41:18who becomes the first two-time winner
01:41:20in 2008 with a dominant
01:41:22victory for Ferrari.
01:41:28Massa second in a one-two for Ferrari.
01:41:30Lewis Hamilton comes home
01:41:32third in a brave drive
01:41:34in a McLaren Mercedes
01:41:36that he had every reason to believe
01:41:38was compromised by the same
01:41:40handicap that took his teammate
01:41:42out of the race in a massive accident.
01:41:44Robert Kubica in fourth,
01:41:46and this guy, Mark Webber,
01:41:48in the Red Bull Renault, quiet all day.
01:41:50We rarely saw him, as David mentioned.
01:41:52But these will be big,
01:41:54big points for the Australian.
01:42:02Doubling his points
01:42:04for the year.
01:42:06Three straight race scores
01:42:08Good news for him.
01:42:10Here comes Jenson Button with points for Honda.
01:42:16Unofficially, Kazuki Nakajima will finish
01:42:18seventh for Williams Toyota.
01:42:20There he is, and Jarno Trulli
01:42:22in the red and white factory Toyota
01:42:24in eighth.
01:42:38Yeah, and they, I'm pretty sure,
01:42:40refers to Massa
01:42:42and Massa's engineers.
01:42:44I think that was an inter-team battle
01:42:46we're talking about right there.
01:42:48Yeah, it wasn't Fernando Alonso
01:42:50we were worried about.
01:42:52It was the guy with the yellow helmet
01:42:54and the other red car.
01:42:56There is Massa
01:42:58inching his way back into this championship
01:43:00after an awful start with two DNFs
01:43:02to begin the season,
01:43:04followed by that incredible relief
01:43:06of victory from Pol in Bahrain
01:43:08three weeks ago.
01:43:12And the Ferrari flags wave in the grandstand
01:43:14once again.
01:43:16We'll take a break and return for the podium
01:43:18ceremonies here at the
01:43:20Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona, Spain.
01:43:22Stay with us.
01:43:26Welcome back to Barcelona.
01:43:28Kimi Raikkonen pulls his Ferrari
01:43:30into Parc Fermé.
01:43:32The winner of the Spanish
01:43:34Formula One Grand Prix,
01:43:36round four of 2008 here on Speed.
01:43:38His teammate
01:43:40Felipe Massa comes in behind him.
01:43:42There you see the change in the positions
01:43:44in the Drivers' Championship. Raikkonen remains
01:43:46number one. Hamilton takes
01:43:48sole possession of second place.
01:43:50Robert Kubica one point behind
01:43:52in third. Felipe Massa
01:43:54another point back in fourth.
01:43:56A number of drivers scored points
01:43:58today, including Jenson
01:44:00Button there in twelfth, who now has three points.
01:44:02Those are the first points for Honda
01:44:04in six races.
01:44:06And they didn't
01:44:08score one point last year.
01:44:10So I
01:44:12suppose things are improving.
01:44:14Hamilton getting out there, putting the steering wheel back.
01:44:16Well, Button got
01:44:18a fifth at Fuji, the Japanese
01:44:20Grand Prix last year.
01:44:22That's right. I was thinking, oh, it was Barrichello who didn't get a point
01:44:24last year. That's right. His first year without a point
01:44:26practically for a long time.
01:44:28So Hamilton must be pretty happy with that.
01:44:30After Bahrain, a couple of
01:44:32three weeks ago, he was not as happy
01:44:34as he was in Melbourne.
01:44:36Well, again, it has to be a relief
01:44:38for Hamilton just to get out of the car
01:44:40after what happened to his teammate Heikki Kovalainen.
01:44:42Yeah.
01:44:44The last word, as you heard from McLaren's Martin
01:44:46Whitmarsh, appears to be
01:44:48just fine, aside from some bumps
01:44:50and bruises, a banged elbow
01:44:52and a possible concussion
01:44:54in a very, very scary
01:44:56accident.
01:44:58Right now, Kimi Räikkönen, the reigning world
01:45:00champion, seems to be firmly in
01:45:02control of things.
01:45:04Keep in mind, he wasn't really a factor in the
01:45:06championship last year until three or four
01:45:08races in. Right now, he's in
01:45:10a dominating position at the same point in
01:45:12the season.
01:45:16Kimi Räikkönen had a haircut since yesterday.
01:45:18You know, I thought he was very
01:45:20closely chiron. He wasn't like that
01:45:22yesterday in the qualifying, was he? Yes, he was.
01:45:24Was he? Yeah. From behind, he looked like David
01:45:26Räikkönen.
01:45:32And that may or may not be a good thing.
01:45:36In a moment, they'll be on the podium.
01:45:38Felipe Massa,
01:45:40with a more pure-suit
01:45:42look,
01:45:44joins his colleagues. We'll take a break.
01:45:50Back in Barcelona, time for the podium ceremonies.
01:45:52Kimi Räikkönen, his second
01:45:54Grand Prix in the Spanish Grand Prix
01:45:56at Barcelona.
01:46:00His teammate Felipe Massa
01:46:02to the left, Lewis Hamilton to the right.
