00:04:56I'm going to clean my lines before morning.
00:05:01I think that's a ghost of one of those lines you've been poaching.
00:05:10If that's the case, you'll see it for yourself.
00:05:25I'm going to clean my lines before morning.
00:05:56It's not like I want to be mean or anything.
00:06:01I have a reputation here.
00:06:04These people have no respect for a man who lets his wife boss him.
00:06:08Next thing you know, they'll be laughing at me.
00:06:12Listen to me, Liz.
00:06:16Liz?

00:10:20an alligator. Is that so? Did you hear that Morton? Game warden Benton says it
00:10:25wasn't a gator killed Len. Well then what was it? You know so much go on tell me
00:10:30what killed him. Doc Grayson said the wounds were the kind of squid or a large
00:10:34octopus might cause. Oh sure and did Grayson explain how a saltwater creature
00:10:39happened to be 30 miles inland living in clear water? Stranger things have
00:10:43happened I know. Look here Benton. You work for the state. Now why don't you keep your
00:10:48nose out of county business. Is that clear enough for you? Oh go soak your
00:10:54fat head. What was that you said? I said go soak your fat head.
00:11:07That boy's looking for bad trouble and he's sure going to get it. You can bet on
00:11:14that.
00:11:23So you see the octopi uses its suction discs to hold its prey. Now in itself the
00:11:29disc will not inflict a wound. Same is true of the squid. Now both creatures
00:11:33have a parrot-like beak as their primary offensive and defensive weapon. Maybe the
00:11:38sheriff was right dad. Could be a freak or a malformed alligator. No no I'm
00:11:47afraid it wasn't. Well where does that leave us Doc? I wish I knew. You know I'm
00:11:54beginning to think Len was telling the truth in Walker's store. He did see
00:11:58something that night. Something that had intelligence enough to seek him out and
00:12:03destroy him later. But Sawyer claims to have killed the thing he saw. Put a half
00:12:07a dozen rifle bullets into it. I've seen that old 4440 used nothing could live
00:12:11after being hit with those slugs. Well conceding the possibility of one such
00:12:17creature we must also concede the possibility of others. Oh there's one
00:12:24sure way of finding out. Go in and search every backwater channel and wet spot in
00:12:29the swamp. If it's there I'll find it.
00:13:07I'm sure it's quiet around here.
00:13:37Did you hear something? Yes. Well whatever it was it's not here anymore.
00:14:07Do you want some coffee? Yeah thanks hon. An army could hide in here and never be
00:14:18noticed. Well one did. What? The Seminoles under Osceola in the 1830s. Took the US
00:14:26Army two years to round them up. I remember reading about Osceola in high
00:14:30school. Two years. I've only been out of two days and I feel worn out. Well you
00:14:39might as well keep on looking around.
00:15:00Well I guess we might as well give up for the day. You won't get any argument from
00:15:45I'm asking you for the last time Dave Walker. You answer me you dirty old man. I ain't dirty
00:16:08Liz baby. Liz baby. Liz honey. Can't you think of anything else to say stupid? I gotta
00:16:15get this order over Miss Chauvet. She's one of my better customers. Can't keep her waiting.
00:16:23I love you Liz baby. Get out. Get out you fat pig. You have some trouble Dave? You know
00:16:51women Cal. Gotta get the hair down every now and then. You sure do know an awful lot about
00:16:56females. I gotta hand it to you. I can't stand here adjoining Cal. Gotta get this order over
00:17:04to Miss Chauvet. What's she letting her hair down about this time? Ever since Lynn got herself
00:17:12killed she wants me to sell out and move into town. Don't you let her bamboozle you Dave. Keep
00:17:19her right here in the store. After all the place wouldn't be the same without you around. Thanks
00:17:26Cal. I better get going. See you when I get back. Yeah I'll be around. Liz baby.
00:17:49Miss Cal honey. You want something Cal? I sure do honey.
00:18:19Tired? Oh I'm dead. Me too. Come on over here.
00:18:42Ah it seems kind of silly knocking ourselves out looking for something we aren't even
00:18:46sure exists. What do you mean? You know we we've covered miles of back channel and haven't come
00:18:53across anything to support your father's theory of an alien creature. Not so much as a mud print
00:18:59we couldn't identify. I know. You're not going to give up are you Steve? Well I I can't waste any
00:19:09more time on a wild goose chase. With all respect to your father's ideas. Dad seems so sure.
00:19:40So
00:20:00you're some woman Liz.
00:20:04I reckon I've never met a woman like you before.
00:20:06You really like me Cal?
00:20:12You're kidding. No I didn't hurt you now did I?
00:20:18It's just that you're so strong. I like being strong.
00:20:28You sure picked a doozy that man Dave. I don't think he's got a muscle in him.
00:20:33Just a big piece of flab. Oh honey I didn't mean anything against you.
00:20:42Just that I can't see a real woman like you turning with a tub of lard like him.
00:20:51You wouldn't understand Cal. You know I I've wanted to tell you.
00:20:58You just wouldn't understand. You try me. Come on you tell old Cal all about it.
00:21:12You wouldn't think bad of me? Crazy.
00:21:17You tell him you killed your pa and your ma and your whole family. I'll fight to protect you.
00:21:58My first husband was a no good bum. Couldn't keep a job more than a week.
00:22:14He used to get lushed up come home beat up on me.
00:22:18He must have been a prowess pig. One night he tried to hold up a gas station.
00:22:24He's so drunk he couldn't even run. They caught him less than a mile away.
00:22:31Got sent up. I got a divorce.
00:22:37That's rough. After three years working in a lousy beanery I was ready for the first guy to say a nice word to me.
00:22:47It was Dave. That's it. I wish it had been me.
00:22:54I'd know how to take care of a woman like you Liz. Maybe it ain't too late Cal.
00:23:08You're wrong woman. It's too late for the both of you.
00:23:14Get up. Come on get up. Now look Dave I know what you're thinking but I got double lard shot in
00:23:22this here thing. You got two seconds or four I'll pull the trigger.
00:23:32No point getting riled Dave. It wasn't my fault.
00:23:36You've been pestering me for months to take her out. Sure Cal. I understand.
00:23:43Get her up so I can get a better look at the line little tramp. Come on get up.
00:23:47Come on get up. No he'll kill me. He'll kill me. Jump him. When your husband wants to take a look at you.
00:24:01You uh you walk all the way Dave? One more step and I'll blow your plumbing too.
00:24:07Get over there. Now Dave it ain't as bad as you think. Shut up.
00:24:13Tramp. What are you going to do? You'll find out soon enough.
00:24:20Dave you put down that gun before I get mad and make you eat it.
00:24:24You go ahead and try it Cal. Go right ahead and try it.
00:24:29Move. Move!
00:25:13Come on. Come on.
00:25:43Go on run. Run till you drop.
00:26:14I can't go on anymore. I can't. You've got to let me stop.
00:26:19You keep moving like a fool child. I can't go on. I can't.
00:26:43Come on. Keep going. Dave please you gotta listen. It wasn't my fault honest. She kept playing up to me every time you turned your back. It wasn't my fault.
00:27:03You call yourself a man. You and your muscles. Shut up you tramp. If it wasn't for you I wouldn't
00:27:11be in this fix and my old friend Dave wouldn't be doing this thing to me. It's all your fault.
00:27:19Get going. But but Dave Dave we've been friends we've been friends a long time Dave.
00:27:25You wouldn't you wouldn't kill an old friend Dave. If you don't move I'll kill you where you stand.
00:27:32But Dave.
00:27:35He's brave big man.
00:27:41No I didn't mean it Dave. Dave I didn't mean it.
00:27:47Dave the kid is out here.
00:27:52Please Dave.
00:27:54Oh I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
00:28:02I'm sorry honey. I'm sorry Dave. I'm sorry I didn't mean it.
00:28:15You think you've learned enough to stay away from a woman Carol?
00:28:19Anything Dave. I'm moving here. I'm going to the county. I'll do anything you say Dave. Anything.
00:28:27All right come on out of there.
00:28:32Dave! Dave! Give me a hand.
00:28:42Behind you!
00:28:43There ain't nothing down here sir.
00:29:04Well I'm getting tired of this. Come on in boys.
00:29:13Well if there was any bodies out there we'd have found them. I want some straight answers Walter.
00:29:20And don't give me any more of that crud about monsters either.
00:29:24Where'd you hide them after you killed them?
00:29:28I told you the truth Cheryl. I didn't kill them. I just wanted to scare them good.
00:29:36I loved my Liz. I wouldn't do anything to hurt her. I loved her.
00:29:43Sure. You loved her. That's why you chased her through the swamp with a shotgun.
00:29:50Come on Walker. Where'd you hide the bodies?
00:29:54Won't you believe me? It was some monsters.
00:29:57Take him out of here before I lose my temper.
00:30:06Really?
00:30:10Can't you pay a reward if someone finds a body Sheriff?
00:30:15Fifty dollars.
00:30:18Each?
00:30:21Yeah.
00:30:25You know I never thought that of old Dave. Of course everybody knows that Carol and Liz
00:30:31had a hankering for each other. Everybody but old Dave.
00:30:35Durn fools. Grappling out there in the middle of the water.
00:30:40If any of them bodies are still in there you can bet some old bull gators got them
00:30:45stuffed in his cave under the bank letting them ripen up for a few days.
00:30:52Yeah well what we need now is some long cypress poles to go in there and probe them gator caves.
00:31:06I'm sorry doc I can't do it. I have to do it myself.
00:31:18Wouldn't want to have to arrest you doc but I will if I find you near the preserve with any
00:31:21explosives. Steve. I'm sorry Nan that's the way it's got to be. Steve's right Nan. It's his job
00:31:28to protect wildlife. What about human life? Three people have been killed in that game preserve.
00:31:34Doesn't that mean anything to you? Nan try to understand if I could be sure something in the
00:31:39swamp was responsible for those deaths I wouldn't hesitate a minute. We've been together the last
00:31:44three days. We didn't see a trace of anything unusual. Not so much as a suggestion of any form
00:31:51of life unknown to us. Steve shot and killed those people. All right I'll admit Sawyer's death left a
00:31:57lot of questions unanswered but you can bet your bottom dollar the other two died from Dave Walker's
00:32:02shotgun. Do you really believe that? Figure it out Nan. Walker admitted chasing his wife and cow
00:32:08into the swamps after he found them together. He shot them and he tried to place the blame on
00:32:12Sawyer's DTs. If Sawyer told of seeing a purple giraffe with polka dot tails Walker would have
00:32:18claimed they did it. There's one argument against that Steve. Dave Walker wasn't the kind of a man
00:32:23to hang himself not even with two murder charges against him. I talked with Dave less than an hour
00:32:28before he killed himself. That man was in a state of shock. I've seen frightened men before terrified
00:32:34men but I've never seen anything to compare with the horror and the fear in Walker's eyes.
00:32:39Well he realized what he'd done he killed two people. One his wife. Oh look Doc Nan and I were
00:32:45all over that swamp. Now why didn't these monsters attack us? I've been thinking about that. They're
00:32:51probably night creatures. They can't stand the light and they stay down near the bottom during the day.
00:32:55A small charge would stun them bring them to the surface. Can't buy it Doc. You're pig-headed
00:33:02Steve Benton. Stubborn and pig-headed. You just don't understand do you?
00:33:16Good night Doc.
00:33:56Right over there in them reeds.
00:34:13Just can't figure old Dave out. If he was caught like Cal what would you do?
00:34:20I hadn't thought of that.
00:34:21Right over there in them reeds is where that big one used to be. Yeah.
00:34:28Hawking your catfish in that hole.
00:34:31Boy this is sure a hot one.
00:34:39Right on seasonable.
00:34:43This is a big one.
00:34:47This is a big one.
00:34:51This is a big one.
00:34:55This is a big one.
00:34:57Right on seasonable.
00:35:01Sure is funny. Huh?
00:35:03Ain't you noticed anything?
00:35:05About what?
00:35:07We've been prodding around here all morning.
00:35:09Ain't run across a single gator.
00:35:13By rights this fool should be crawling with them.
00:35:17Sure funny.
00:35:19Yeah that is funny.
00:35:21I don't like the looks of things.
00:35:23Let's call it a day.
00:35:26Wait a minute. We ain't pulled the gator holes around the bend yet.
00:35:28You do what you want to do boy.
00:35:30Just get me on dry land.
00:35:32And right quick.
00:35:34All right. I ain't no use getting all head up.
00:35:36Let's go.
00:35:40You better quit drinking that hand shine.
00:35:42Yeah.
00:35:44That's why you're so wrinkly and ugly.
00:35:50There's no way out here.
00:35:52There's a lot of goose chasing.
00:35:56There's a lot of goose chasing.

00:37:19There's a lot of goose chasing.
00:37:22JEFFREY SCREAMS
00:37:24JEFFREY SCREAMS
00:37:27AHH!
00:37:29AHH!!
00:37:41We've been calling but there's been no answer.
00:37:43Oh, I just got back. What seems to be the trouble?
00:37:45Oh, I just got back. What seems to be the trouble?
00:37:47Haven't you heard?
00:37:49disappeared. Come on inside.
00:37:58You know Kovacs nothing would please him more than to have all the swamp people
00:38:03disappear swamp trash he calls them I know they have about as much regard for
00:38:09him as he has for them when they're worried enough to go to him you know
00:38:14something's wrong. Mrs. Reed said the men went searching for Cal and Mrs.
00:38:18Walker's bodies and they never returned. Kovacs says he'll get up a search party
00:38:23if they don't show up in a couple of days. Doc you and Nan take your car and
00:38:28get as many volunteers as you can tell them to meet me at the old wagon road
00:38:32I'll call Doc Evans and have him bring his dogs either they're lost or they've
00:38:37had an accident. I hope to heaven you're right.
00:39:48Well they picked up the scent anyway. Dad do you think they'll find them? Only the good Lord can answer that.
00:40:18Well at least we know they got this far. All right let's split up into two parties and circle the lake. Keep your eyes open. Let's move out.
00:41:18All clear. It's clear over here.
00:41:48All right let's keep moving.
00:42:18Well we can't do anything more tonight might as well start back. I reckon ain't no
00:42:38use hurrying now Mr. Benton. Reed and old Sam was alive. They let us know when
00:42:43with a hollow or something. Yeah it kind of looks that way. You fellas notice
00:42:48anything about this lake? I mean the gators. What about them? They ain't. A piece of
00:42:54water this size usually has maybe 50 60 big ones around. A whole lot of little
00:42:59ones. It's real unnatural. Well maybe our torches scared them away. Nothing scares
00:43:05gators. Nothing. Animal or human. Well we might as well get out of here.
00:43:22You got something in mind Steve? I keep thinking what Evans said about the
00:43:27gators. Nothing scares them animal or human and yet something made them leave
00:43:33maybe a maybe a mineral contamination. Guess I better run some water samples.
00:43:38Come on you two drink your coffee. And supposing there is no contamination? Well
00:43:46then I'll send over to Eastport for a diving rig and go down to look for this
00:43:50monster of yours. No Steve don't even joke like that. I'm not joking man I had some
00:43:55training with an aqualung while I was in the Navy. But Steve. Look there are two
00:43:59bodies we know for sure down there. Maybe four. They've got to be brought up.
00:44:03Wait a minute. There are no alligators in that part of the swamp right? So? No sign of any
00:44:09fish or snakes? No. What are you getting at doc? Well there goes your argument about
00:44:16setting off a dynamite charge underwater. You'd bring the bodies to the surface.
00:44:20Get it out of your mind doc. I'm not using any explosives as long as there's
00:44:24another way. Why must you be such a. Stubborn pig head? Exactly. I'll tell you
00:44:30why. Number one there's bound to be some aquarium life in that section even if
00:44:34the bigger forms have abandoned it. Explosion underwater would destroy every
00:44:38living thing and wreck what nature took years to build up. Number two I'm paid to
00:44:43prevent the useless slaughter of wildlife. Number three I'd have to get
00:44:48authorization. To get that authorization I'd have to come up with a heck of a
00:44:51good reason. Satisfied? Finish up dad I want to go home. Steve how long will it
00:45:02take to get this diving equipment from Eastport? A couple days. Why? Oh nothing.
00:45:10Take care of yourself Steve. Well here's hoping. Dad can't you throw the dynamite
00:45:25in from here? No I want to get it out in the middle in the deepest part.
00:45:40I'm going to get it out in the middle in the deepest part.
00:46:40It should go any minute.
00:47:40I just can't figure it out. Walker's wife why didn't her body come to the
00:47:59surface? I don't know. I think I better walk over the coroner's office. What's the
00:48:07matter Mr. Benton? You feel awkward about arresting my father in his own home? I
00:48:12warned him I'd arrest him if he used dynamite. He's nice of you. Well the autopsy
00:48:19should be over by now. Oh Steve I thought you'd be here. I don't like to have to do
00:48:28this doctor. Do we have time for a cup of coffee first? Sure.
00:48:33Mind honey? No I'll make some sandwiches.
00:48:47One thing is certain for all the good it'll do now. Dave Walker didn't shoot Cal.
00:48:53I just come from the autopsies. Hoover's tried to keep me out. I told him I'd
00:49:02raise the stink they'd smell all the way to the Capitol if he did. Well what
00:49:05killed them Doc? Not drowning and Cal wasn't shot either.
00:49:11Every drop of blood was drained out of their bodies and they had wounds on
00:49:17their throats. Suction wounds like a like a gigantic leech might make and there's
00:49:24something even more incredible. Now Cal was supposed to have been killed several
00:49:28days ago. Sam and Reed have been missing a matter of 48 hours. All three of them as
00:49:34far as we know were in that lake a minimum of two days. Now I'd stake my
00:49:39reputation as a doctor that Cal hadn't been dead more than two or three hours
00:49:43when we found him and the other two less than that. First stage rigor mortis
00:49:48started in during the autopsy. But how could that be Doc? It's impossible. The
00:49:53coroner will confirm it. Whatever killed them is still in that lake and it's
00:49:58going to take more than dynamite to get it out. Concussion from those charges
00:50:03would have killed a full-grown whale. That explains how Cal and the others lived
00:50:10after they were supposed to be drowned. What do you mean? Well this whole region
00:50:14is riddled by caves and caverns cut out by the ocean thousands of years ago. If
00:50:19there are caves above the water then there must be caves under the water. Go
00:50:23on. Mike and I had a chance to fool around with some frogman equipment
00:50:28captured from the Italian Navy. We sort of prowled through a sunken transport
00:50:33off Salerno. When the ship went down it trapped some air inside the hull. We'd go
00:50:40down come up inside the officer's lounge take off her face masks and sort of
00:50:44sample some of the bottles floating around. We'd drive the guys crazy trying
00:50:48to figure out how we were getting the stuff. You mean you think that there's a
00:50:52an alpaca or a cave underneath the lake? Right, gotta be. How else could those
00:50:57people have lived down there? Not only that explains how whatever it is down
00:51:00there lived through the concussions. Steve. Liz Walker. She might still be down
00:51:09there. Alive.
00:51:23Alive.
00:51:27No. No. No!
00:51:52Comfortable? Yeah. You sure you don't want me to go down for you Mike? You haven't had one of these
00:52:14things on for a long time while me every other day I've been playing fish. Not
00:52:19this time Mike. If you ask me they ought to have their heads examined. Giant leeches.
00:52:27I'm willing to bet a month's pay they don't come up with nothing more than
00:52:31excuses. He's crazy. Him, the doc, and his brat too. Just wait till I get on the phone
00:52:39to the Capitol. I'll guarantee somebody will wish they'd kept their nose out of
00:52:42other people's business. I'll guarantee that.
00:52:49Let's go Mike. Steve. Be careful please. Oh boy, Mike will be ready if anything goes
00:53:01wrong. Don't worry about Steve. Now if you were going after Barracuda you might have
00:53:04a tiny bit to worry about. Ready Mike?
00:53:49Please stay away. Please. Not exactly inviting is it? That sure isn't. Overstudy Mike.
00:54:19It'll stop anything up to a tiger shark. But you gotta hit. And this is don't count.
00:54:33Now anything goes wrong, just yank on the line and I'll be down in a hurry.
00:55:49You sure you don't want me to go down and finish it off for you Steve? No thanks Mike.
00:56:13I think I hurt her pretty bad. Careful now, anything that hurts ten times is dangerous.
00:56:20He's wounded it. He's gonna finish it off. Does he have to go under again? He's got to
00:56:31make sure honey. Where could it have come from? I wish I knew. We'll have to make some
00:56:39tests. Maybe the proximity of Cape Canaveral's got something to do with it. The rocket station?
00:56:44Well they use atomic energy in the first stages of launching. Not all of them have been successful.
00:56:50You think that if some animal life was close by, not close enough to be killed, but close
00:56:55enough to feel the effects of a radioactive energy that... A mutation. A type of gigantism
00:57:00of some common animal. Whatever it is, I hope he's able to bring it up.
00:58:00That can't be Liz. What could have done that? Look at her face.
00:59:30What was that? Look at that thing. I've been around here for years. I never saw nothing like that before.
01:00:00I've been around here for years. I never saw nothing like that before.
01:00:30There was no sign of them this time. They must be licking their wounds. They sure used
01:00:59enough stuff to do the job, Mike. I used 106 to 40 percent. Ought to blow the bottom
01:01:04right out. All right, let her go. Oh no, I've done enough of your dirty work. Help yourself.
01:01:29Oh no, I've done enough of your dirty work. Help yourself.
01:01:45Oh no, I've done enough of your dirty work. Help yourself.
