00:00:00Even on a hot lap, but when you've got other cars around you and so close to you, you'll find people will dart left, right
00:00:06And in the past a couple of people have tried to go very, very far out to the right then cut across the front of somebody
00:00:12Those cars that are cutting across the ones on the left-hand side of the track, the inside, will not necessarily be aware
00:00:19Well, that's the corner after the S that you can see on the map there where the final speed trap figure is
00:00:24the intermediate sector points up at the end of the next straight and after the twisty infield section and
00:00:3171 laps for the race here this afternoon
00:00:34We're all set for another race of drama. No doubt. We certainly have had a couple of
00:00:40major incidents at the start of the last two races
00:00:42remember what happened to Ralph Schumacher who went flying through the air in
00:00:45Australia and then the contact between Michael Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya and the start of the Malaysian race
00:00:51This first corner is difficult
00:00:53And of course on the outside of the first corner now is this new extra grippy tarmac rather than a gravel trap that might affect
00:00:59Things a little bit. Well, the one thing's for sure if somebody does get squeezed out to the right
00:01:04As long as they don't spin or make contact with anything solid they will be able to continue
00:01:09They may lose about six seven places, but nonetheless that's one of the advantages of that new high grip tarmac
00:01:15So Montoya on pole alongside him Michael Schumacher the three times winner here
00:01:19Then Ralph his third front row start of the year and David Coulthard last year's winner
00:01:23Then it's Kimi Räikkönen and Jarno Trulli Jensen Button starting seventh ahead of Barrichello in eighth
00:01:28Nick Heidfeld in ninth and Nick Asalo in the Toyota in tenth again second race in a row
00:01:33De La Rosa starting in 11th place just ahead of Felipe Massa the Brazilian starting in 12th
00:01:39Then it's Irvine in the second jag
00:01:41Fisichella in the first of the Jordans and the Honda powered cars really not performing that well down in 15th for Villeneuve as well
00:01:47And 17th for Pannis McNish starting in 16th place
00:01:51Frentzen a long way down on Bridgestone tires that didn't seem to come in too well for him
00:01:55He starts 18th, Takuma Sato 19th
00:01:57And then Mark Webber quite pleased in fact to have got himself ahead of the second Arrows car with his Minardi
00:02:04Well, once again a lot of work going on in the Ferrari
00:02:09Just alongside Williams on the outside. Of course, that's the racing line into turn one a
00:02:15Lot of activity, I'm not quite sure what they're all diving
00:02:17They look like they're diving into the cockpit brother Michaels just laid in and they're just getting the seat belts
00:02:22Attached takes probably two people to do it in a rush
00:02:26Certainly the driver all you can do is sit there and just allow the mechanics to
00:02:29Attach the crutch strap the lap belts and of course the shoulder harness
00:02:34so now we are into the
00:02:36Closing countdown to the start of the formation lap and you can just feel
00:02:40The pulse quicken a little bit not only in the cars and down on the grid, but also amongst the fans
00:02:47Watching in these beautiful conditions ready for the start of the Brazilian Grand Prix. Wait for the klaxon
00:02:53We have just a minute to go now to the formation lap
00:02:57So the grid must now be cleared engines fired up and the mechanics have a few seconds in which to make sure the cars are
00:03:04Running brand new Bridgestone tires on the front there for Michael and indeed on the rear as well
00:03:09And remember he saved at least one set of tires yesterday from qualifying
00:03:14Yes, Ferrari realized that they weren't seriously going to be able to take full away
00:03:18They tried very very hard
00:03:19But they sacrificed that last run to ensure that Michael Schumacher had a brand new or an additional set of tires
00:03:26But particularly brand new tires for this afternoon 71 lap Grand Prix mechanics have all cleared the grid
00:03:31So engines are all fired up safely on the 22 cars that are set to start here this afternoon
00:03:38The breeze is gentle, but it shouldn't affect things down there on the grid where the temperature is rising in the cockpit
00:03:46And the pulse is beginning to race. They're setting off on their formation lap now
00:03:51And let's just see them get away cleanly. Hopefully we don't have any problems getting away the launch control
00:03:57Practice start for everybody a little bit of tire smoke
00:04:00But nothing like the old days where we used to see great black lines laid down at the start of the formation lap
00:04:06Well, in fact black lines will have been laid down because they're not really using their launch control at this point
00:04:11They'll save that for the start formally
00:04:14But they put a bit of rubber down which of course does aid traction when they do come onto the grid and that launch control
00:04:20Is activated Montoya then leads them round
00:04:23Michael Schumacher just following him at this stage get a little bit of heat into the tires and look at those grandstands
00:04:29They are crampacked here today as they wait to see whether Ferrari will come back at Williams
00:04:36Ferrari won the first race of the year in Australia Williams took the win last time out courtesy of Ralph Schumacher
00:04:43It's one a piece
00:04:44Is it going to be here today?
00:04:45Will Ferrari show that brand new car to be the match or even better than the Williams on a track that should suit Williams?
00:04:52BMW down to the ground
00:04:55Well the outcome of this Grand Prix, I hope will not be decided in the first corner
00:04:59We have seen too many incidents the first two Grands Prix this year
00:05:02Let's hope that the Grand Prix is a clean start a first lap
00:05:05No problem, and then we have a proper Grand Prix a race between Montoya the two Schumachers
00:05:11David Coulthard Kimi Raikkonen and maybe even Rubens Barrichello though
00:05:15I suspect that Barrichello is not going to come into the frame until very much later in the race
00:05:18But do not discount the potential of Jarno Trulli or Jenson Button in the two Renaults
00:05:25They're not there because of luck. They're there because they've done a very good job and are there on merit
00:05:30Juan Pablo Montoya's father watching proceedings. He's always around watching his son. He raced himself in karts
00:05:37He knows some of what's involved but at this level, of course, it's somewhat different
00:05:41But he lets his son get on with it Juan Pablo Montoya very much his own man as we all know in Formula One
00:05:47He's come onto the scene
00:05:48He's only been here just over a year
00:05:50But everybody recognizes the true talent that he has but Michael Schumacher the supreme the four times world champion
00:05:57Will be starting alongside him. He drives under the auspices of this man Ross Brawn the master tactician now
00:06:03Can they find a way of beating Williams BMW here today?
00:06:07Renault looking strong Flavio Briatore the team boss at Renault when Renault ran their own team in the late 70s early 80s
00:06:14They were twice winners in Brazil
00:06:16I wonder if they can come to the fore today unlikely unless we have problems for Williams and Ferrari but
00:06:22Reliability is always an issue at this track
00:06:2622 cars getting into position for the start of the race here in Brazil
00:06:33The tension mounts both in the pit garage and on the track itself
00:06:38You can see the uphill climb to the first corner. Can they get through that first corner safely today?
00:06:44The last couple of cars move into position the starting light sequence begins. We wait for the start
00:06:53And it's blast off in Brazil as Montoya now shuts the door on Michael Schumacher doing what Schumacher normally does
00:07:00But he hasn't quite shut the door completely
00:07:02He still gets in front, but he goes wide Montoya stays on track side-by-side almost contact
00:07:08They're at it again these two and it's Michael Schumacher with the advantage just ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya
00:07:14Cracking start Michael Schumacher. No, Ralph Schumacher's got the goal nearly
00:07:18Oh
00:07:20Montoya blocks and Ralph Schumacher's wing has been knocked off. It's Montoya's wing. That was Michael blocking Montoya
00:07:26And he's taken the front wing off the Williams
00:07:30Trying to listen up with that. We're ready with you for a front wing
00:07:35Well last time out it was Michael's front wing
00:07:38That went this time
00:07:41This time it is on the Williams and it's Michael getting away
00:07:46It's Ralph Schumacher in second place with Yano Trulli and Jensen Button both getting away
00:07:51Well at the start, but Williams with the work to do and there is the front wing off Montoya's car
00:07:57Well, what a start we thought we'd get through the first corner. That was all right
00:08:00So all of a sudden down into turn four, that's where the action occurred
00:08:03And there was this time Michael Schumacher
00:08:05But a very stern block and Montoya as he got under the braking into turn four
00:08:10The result was the wing on Montoya's car is somewhere in the grass
00:08:15Well, what a shame that it's come to that straight away on the first lap
00:08:19They got through the first corner safely this time, but these two are going to be hammering tongues all year
00:08:23Did somebody go off there?
00:08:25Well, there was a lot of smoke and look at this a bit of a move going on Barrichello here from Kimi Raikkonen
00:08:30But it didn't quite come off so much for me and Barrichello starting on a full load of fuel
00:08:34He wouldn't pull out and pass like that up the hill if you're carrying over 150 kilograms of fuel bits of carbon fiber on the racing
00:08:41Line that's gonna be a problem Montoya comes in not a Jordan coming in as well
00:08:46What has he picked up on the roll? He's picked up some sort of bunting
00:08:49He's been off the track. I think because he has got new front downforce
00:08:52That was Fisichella coming in McNish also
00:08:54So three cars Fisichella McNish and Montoya now
00:08:58Is that a consequence of Montoya trying to keep out of the way or people trying to crawl over the top of him?
00:09:03A lot of work
00:09:06Waiting to hit listen on the radio a lot of work going on clear the side pods
00:09:17And he is he's mystified look take a look what a great view we'll have here move to the inside and
00:09:23Michael just blocks the access down the inside and that took off the front wing
00:09:27But the question is did Michael make more than one move he went to the left of the track
00:09:31He then came back to the right, which is the where Montoya was going
00:09:34But toys are allowed to do that, but Michael in theory is not allowed to do that
00:09:38Well, I'm sure Michael argued that he only made the one move to the left
00:09:41But the timing of that move that was the key thing it was as Montoya had a run on him
00:09:46Yes, but he moved to the left
00:09:47But then he moved back to the middle of the track and that's what the contact took place
00:09:51It was not on the left of the track
00:09:52It was in the middle of the track and therefore that constitutes a second move by Michael Schumacher
00:09:57While the stewards will be reviewing it and remember if he is deemed to have caused an accident
00:10:02Then he could be put ten places further back on the grid next time out. They can use video evidence
00:10:07They can analyze it after the race and here comes Barrichello on the charge trying to get past Jensen Button now
00:10:12I mean he must have an oily rag in the fuel tank the progress that Romans Barrichello has made eight in the grid not up
00:10:18To fifth and you can see the speed of the Ferrari against that of the Renault ahead of him Barrichello pushing button as hard as anybody
00:10:26Yeah, and button got very out of shape just a moment ago
00:10:28He managed to gather it all together Michael Schumacher leads here in Brazil after another dramatic opening lap
00:10:34Roush Schumacher his brother is in second place
00:10:37Yano Trulli in third for Renault button in fourth and we ride on board with a man in fifth place
00:10:42That is Rubens Barrichello
00:10:43Coulthard behind him Raikkonen in seventh Heidfeld eighth
00:10:46Then it's Massa ninth and Irvine ten but watch for the pass as Barrichello comes up behind button
00:10:51They come through this final curve onto the pit street. He's got the run. He's got the slipstream
00:10:55He's coming up alongside. Can he do him under brakes button will break late Barrichello? No, he's not gonna do it
00:11:00Is he gonna sneak done? Oh
00:11:02Jensen now you can't that one up easy. I do have to say well
00:11:05He did a bit at the end there, but look at the fans
00:11:07They love it because their man's on a charge
00:11:09But as you say John the likelihood is they're running that Ferrari
00:11:13Relatively light because he seems to have great pace
00:11:17And these early laps and
00:11:20And
00:11:21Sounded like Jensen on the on the radio then we'll find out no doubt as he now pushes his teammate
00:11:27Let's take another look at the start of the race wasn't a great getaway from Montoya
00:11:31But he then tried to do the chopping job on
00:11:34Michael didn't chop as aggressively perhaps as Michael tends to know and Michael just about what he thought
00:11:39No, I'm not gonna make it then Montoya runs wide and turn one gives Michael the opportunity to cut back
00:11:44Puts Montoya under pressure side-by-side. Here's the view from Michael Schumacher's car
00:11:48Montoya to the right and he'll come across to the left not so severe as Michael did and Montoya in Malaysia
00:11:54Michael goes up the inside locks a break dirty part of the track
00:11:57Montoya's got all the racetrack, but just too quick hasn't got the grip now. It's Michael
00:12:01He's got the momentum again side-by-side. They go through curving us all Montoya backside
00:12:07He's on the dirty part of the track and all of a sudden Michael Schumacher's in the lead
00:12:11yes, and then of course Montoya with the BMW horsepower managed to get the draft on him and
00:12:16Tried to overtake and that was when contact was made. He's back on track again now and he's running in 20th position
00:12:24David Kulthar
00:12:25Maybe we've got this from right maybe McLaren are running a lot of fuel
00:12:28Maybe they're gonna go as they did in Malaysia deep into this race before they come in for a single pit stop
00:12:33They're falling back. But Barrichello is the man on the move up to third place
00:12:37He's got the two runners of Trillian Dutton behind him and then it's Kulthar and Raikkonen
00:12:41Yes, indeed Michael Schumacher last at 1 minute 17 point 263 compared to a 1 minute 18 point 0 for Ralph little battle going on
00:12:49Here between the two Jags and they're right behind Mika Salo de la Rosa in there and Eddie Irvine
00:12:55In fact, Irvine's just been passed by Mika Salo. Well, I said this group behind the two arrows
00:13:01One of the VARs two Jaguars and a Jordan. This was the part of the field
00:13:05We're gonna see probably some of the best racing
00:13:07Seven cars covered by 0.7 of a second. It's great stuff, isn't it? Really good to see and
00:13:13look at this the two arrows trying to put the move on Olivier Panis there by look the looks of things in the VAR as
00:13:20We're riding on board with Takuma Sato. He's at the back of this group in 17th place
00:13:24His team edges at Giancarlo Fisichello got involved in the first lap
00:13:29Tangle at was with Alan McNish
00:13:30We don't think that was involving when Pablo Montoya that I think happened on the exit of turn four
00:13:35And then we see Barrichello now up into second place. Yeah, Barrichello's up in the second
00:13:40It's Ferrari one two and look at the fans
00:13:42We're loving it
00:13:43They're laughing it up as their man Rubinho goes in the second position and chases now
00:13:49After teammates Michael Schumacher the gap just under five seconds between them
00:13:55Well, he certainly is flying at this point in the race the Bridgestone tires looking good
00:14:00But you have to stay say he must be running this car
00:14:03Relatively light and for Ralph to let him through relatively easily
00:14:06I think Ralph Schumacher must have started with a heavy fuel load in his car
00:14:12Michael Schumacher just running away from the field five seconds now
00:14:15That's in fact ahead of Rubens Barrichello. It was Ralph Schumacher as they came across the line the last time
00:14:20But Barrichello now in second place in fact, they got probably extending more than five seconds
00:14:25But the battle going on behind fourth fifth and sixth between the two runners and David Coulthard in the first of the two McLaren's
00:14:32battle between two Brits here because we've got Jensen button running in fifth place and David Coulthard in sixth his teammate Kimi Räikkönen is
00:14:39Any two seconds behind in seventh and then Heidfeld in eight. This was the past Barrichello versus Ralph Schumacher
00:14:44I have to say I think Ralph Schumacher has got a lot of fuel on board
00:14:48To have the power and the Ferrari to do that. It wasn't just horsepower. That's got to do with weight
00:14:52Yeah, we know how strong the BMW engine is
00:14:55So up the hill we would have expected him to be quick Barrichello's just set the fastest lap of this race
00:15:00One sixteen point eight. He's flying
00:15:02He's much faster than teammate Michael Schumacher
00:15:04But surely he has very little fuel in that car relative to the other machines out there
00:15:10I'll just look how quickly he's pulled away from Ralph Schumacher
00:15:14There was Barrichello up in the second place four point three seconds
00:15:17He's now taking probably two three four tenths of a second out of Michael Schumacher's lead
00:15:23Barrichello clawing back to the front where he wanted to be after qualifying he ended up fourth row of the grid eighth quickest
00:15:31There's a small compensation right now because no doubt he'll be into the pits
00:15:35He will be the first of the lead cars in my view to stop for fuel
00:15:39Well, there's David Coulthard in the McLaren sixth position of him at the moment
00:15:43Let's ride on board with him for a second of the two cars. You're looking at ahead of him
00:15:47Jensen Button immediately ahead and Jarno Trulli the car just ahead of that and both Renault's got a really good start particularly Trulli
00:15:54They managed to get ahead of Coulthard on the run up into turn one
00:15:58But Coulthard for me and Raikkonen they're in for a long first run
00:16:04Well, here comes Michael Schumacher's completed seven laps another quick lap there from Rubens Barrichello and the gap between them has come down from five
00:16:11to three point six seconds of Barrichello catching his teammate here come the two Renault's Trulli Button and then David Coulthard with
00:16:18Raikkonen a bit closer and McNish who is a lap down. Remember? Well, he's right on the tail there
00:16:25Almost looking trying to get past and here comes the battle further back Irvine here under pressure from Frentzen. Frentzen going down the inside into turn
00:16:31one
00:16:32same engine power
00:16:35And
00:16:37Heinz being told to go get him
00:16:39He's got past the Jaguar of Irvine and good racing Irvine went to the limit in the corner
00:16:43He did the right thing. He was firm, but fair. He allowed Frentzen through French
00:16:47Oh and a Jordan and that I think is Fisichella. Yeah, that's Jarno. Sorry Giancarlo Fisichella
00:16:53Who has expired in a cloud of steam it looked like rather than smoke and quite well
00:17:00So
00:17:03It looks like for engine related problems certainly by the way of that little thing smoking and steaming away
00:17:08He has a quick look underneath. Let's take a look at when it went just coming out
00:17:14Feel part of the circuit so he just pulls off very quickly couldn't have done any better
00:17:17But again further disappointment for Jordan Eddie Jordan's birthday and Saturday is not bringing him any further luck this afternoon
00:17:24So Fisichella's out Takuma Sato is in 17th place
00:17:28He's embroiled in a battle with Pannis and Bernalde Frentzen and Irvine Villeneuve de la Rosa
00:17:34those six cars
00:17:37And the
00:17:39Right behind Raikkonen there you can see the yellow blobs at the top of the screen that indicates there is a yellow flag out there
00:17:44But that's because of Fisichella's car having stopped at the side of the track
00:17:48So it's not a full yellow everywhere. Just a local yellow around Fisichella's car
00:17:54Looking back at this battle de la Rosa and Villeneuve
00:17:58Behind Villeneuve now Frentzen Irvine dropping back a little bit Frentzen now trying to use the momentum
00:18:03He built up he got past Irvine relatively easily Irvine
00:18:07Fought for it, but didn't sort of say well, I'm not going to give you room
00:18:11That's right. Now. Let's take another look. This was another move that happened just a moment ago
00:18:15This was Takuma Sato getting past Olivier Pannis in no chance
00:18:21But he has a go doesn't he he's a goer
00:18:23But I mean he came you could see the speed in Pannis ain't any sort of sludge in the brakes department and Takuma Sato
00:18:29He's braver than Dick Tracy. He was shot down the inside on the dirty part of track
00:18:33You know
00:18:34You're gonna have to make your pass earlier Takuma if you want to get the job done into that part of circuit
00:18:38He is indeed. He's learning though. He's learning this trade of Formula One. He is a racer
00:18:42We saw that in his Formula three campaigns and he's having a good old go here again
00:18:47We're looking at our race leader in super slow motion through the first couple of corners
00:18:51He has an advantage of 2.4
00:18:53Seconds over his teammate Rubens Barrichello who in turn is nearly six seconds ahead of Ralph Schumacher
00:19:00Those are fantastic pictures
00:19:02Bridgestone tire doesn't have that oscillation. We've seen from Michelin particularly on the McLaren
00:19:07The Villeneuve breaks down behind Pedro de la Rosa into turn one
00:19:11quicker into the corner de la Rosa then just seems to be I don't know why
00:19:16Oh Jack, we saw that oversteer in the morning wall up. He's still got it. He's got a low downforce car
00:19:21He's got a very nervy car aerodynamically. He should have a fairly quick car in a straight line the trouble is
00:19:26He hasn't got the horsepower. He's just trying to make the car quicker by reducing the downforce but behind Frentzen
00:19:31He's the man who's on the move Jack Villeneuve watch your mirrors. There's a big orange arrows coming behind you
00:19:36Yeah, there is and Frentzen's been laughing quickly as we saw he got past Irvine now
00:19:41He's going to try and get past the Canadian in the BA or Honda
00:19:44he is the top Honda runner at the moment is Jack Villeneuve in 12th position and
00:19:49Just behind the Ford Power Jaguar of Pedro de la Rosa and of course Frentzen
00:19:53Wanting to home in on that Jaguar more than anything else
00:19:56Same engines and they want to prove that arrows can beat Jaguar in the Battle of David versus Goliath in terms of budget
00:20:03Look at Villeneuve again
00:20:04You see that's what happens you take wing out of the car to get straight line speed you end up with a car
00:20:09Aerodynamically very unstable in those high-speed corners
00:20:12Back on with Rubens Barrichello that little speck in the distance of this man Michael Schumacher
00:20:16The gap just under two seconds though. He's still closing
00:20:19He's still faster than Schumacher Schumacher running at a heavier fuel load. No doubt. Here we go
00:20:24Villeneuve tries to make a move on de la Rosa. He stays in the inside. Can Villeneuve go around the outside de la Rosa's got the line
00:20:30He's got the grip now watch for Frentzen
00:20:32He's gonna take a move and Villeneuve on the edge of the curve to Seoul watch the oversteer in the exit of the corner
00:20:37Frentzen's the man who's gonna try and take away the position of Villeneuve and that's p12
00:20:41Can he get the slipstream here Frentzen trying to line himself up, but it looks as though he can't quite get there
00:20:47So again, he has to settle in behind Villeneuve and look for another opportunity somewhere else de la Rosa doing a fine job
00:20:54He's not blocking. He's racing for position. That's perfectly flat fair and he's in 11th place
00:20:59Remember, they're about two and a half seconds behind Mika Salo Salo running in 10
00:21:04Jensen Button coming under a little bit of attention and heat from David Kuhlfahrt
00:21:08There's a Scott again down through this Mergulio corner
00:21:12So careful now don't break late David over breaking yourself see button slows down earlier
00:21:17But he gets on the power and could get the drive up the hill and he extends the gap to David Kuhlfahrt in himself
00:21:24Kuhlfahrt in sixth place and not used to having to sit behind a Renault or Benetton as it was
00:21:30But these cars are showing so much better speed and almost bringing back the glory days of Benetton in the mid 90s
00:21:36When Michael Schumacher took two wins here at the interlagos circuit for the team now, it's Renault now
00:21:43Look at Villeneuve now. He's got the inside line last time. We tried the outside. Can he do it down the inside?
00:21:47Yes, I think he can he's ahead as long as he can keep it it tied into the corner
00:21:51Good move that from Jack Villeneuve a very courageous move Villeneuve was fully committed Pedro de la Rosa gave him the inside line
00:21:58Now he didn't have to do that
00:21:59But I think he felt that ultimately Villeneuve is capable of lapping quicker at this point Pedro de la Rosa
00:22:04No doubt has got a big load of fuel on board Villeneuve probably less fuel
00:22:08But also running a lot less downforce and that's giving him the advantage of the second part of these two long straights
00:22:15Jenson Button still managing to fend off David Kuhlfahrt for the moment and remember the other McLaren of Kimi Raikkonen just behind in
00:22:22Seventh place so the two McLarens perhaps just getting a little bit held up by the Renault
00:22:27It's a battle for position is nothing wrong for Button
00:22:30It's his duty to try and stay in front as you see
00:22:34Barrichello that much closer to teammate Michael Schumacher the gap has come down to 1.2 seconds
00:22:39Well Michael Schumacher not going slowly
00:22:41You saw a slight slide as the car exited out of turn one dropping down through the center S's now Rubens Barrichello
00:22:47Closing down to 1.2 seconds on race leader Michael Schumacher
00:22:50Kuhlfahrt's gonna have a go down the inside. Has he got the momentum? Is he brave enough? Yes, he is
00:22:55Once again Button didn't really fight for the position and the McLaren goes ahead again
00:23:01It may be different fuel loads as much as anything just a quick note that Montoya still in 20th place his lap times
00:23:07one minute seventeen point seven five two
00:23:10Nothing, particularly dramatic in terms of a lap time there and he's still got some 25 seconds before he gets on to the back of
00:23:18With Bernal D and Alex young so Montoya really does have some work to do and it's not like Malaysia
00:23:23Where they're picking off cars one by one every lap
00:23:27Well, the question mark is will Ferrari allow the progress of Baratello to continue at the rate
00:23:32It's doing he's run diners teammate. We're on lap 13. How far will Barrichello go before he has to come into the pits?
00:23:40Well, the question is yes, how much lighter is the car Michael might be quite happy to let Rubens past at this stage
00:23:46Presumably Michael Schumacher's car running heavier and
00:23:49Have the advantage later on but you can see Michael's trying hard
00:23:52He looked the left front there and still missed the apex of turn one
00:23:56And again, it's sliding around quite a lot that car and Michael's trying hard, but he's not hasn't got the pace of this man
00:24:02Here comes Rubens. Rubens gonna pass him down the street. The crowd have gone absolutely ballistic
00:24:08Look at that. They really have gone wild now as Barrichello takes the lead. It's not the first time
00:24:13He's led it into Lagos
00:24:15But can he keep it there because he has such an awful finishing record
00:24:19Around this track and as we know this car must be running very light in the early stages to be quite so fast
00:24:24Well, I would anticipate some of it in lap
00:24:27Let's say 18 or 24. That's a pretty wide window, but we don't know how much a little fuel Ferrari has put into Barrichello's car
00:24:34Here's the past really very simple for Rubens. He's got a huge weight saving over Michael
00:24:39He's got the momentum off the corner
00:24:41Light fuel load gives you basically better grip but also allows better acceleration. The engines are very similar
00:24:47They are actually different engines, but horsepower and drivability probably well a few small percentages of a difference
00:24:53Now Coulthard has caught up to the other Renault that of Jarno Trulli
00:24:57So he's got the job to do once again having fought his way past Jenson Button
00:25:01Coulthard now runs in fifth place the fourth place car of Jarno Trulli just ahead and in fact right here
00:25:07Sorry, we're running with Raikkonen who's got the job of getting past Button
00:25:10So we've got the two battles going on between Renault and McLaren this one between Button and Raikkonen
00:25:17A little bit further down the field. We were watching the battle with
00:25:20Villeneuve, Frentzen and de la Rosa. De la Rosa's dropped down. Also Frentzen's managed to get past the Jaguar
00:25:26So it's Villeneuve 11th, Frentzen 12th
00:25:292.8 seconds between Villeneuve and Frentzen. Frentzen of course losing momentum in this process
00:25:34McNish just staying on the back of these two as well. So still putting in some quick laps
00:25:39but unfortunately a long way down after having come into the pits at the beginning of the race and
00:25:45Just going around on this next lap. We can see Ralf Schumacher's beginning to lap a little faster
00:25:50He's 9.4 seconds off the lead in the Williams BMW, but it's just put in a very quick first segment time
00:25:58Well, I think waiting for the Williams to burn off again the load of fuel that it is on
00:26:02Ralf driving not too aggressively in these opening laps
00:26:05Waiting till that fuel load gets down to his silver point
00:26:07He can then maximise the potential the Michelin tyre has. What we're seeing right now is domination from Bridgestone
00:26:13The first time we've seen that really all through the weekend
00:26:17But Ralf now beginning to realise and the team telling him okay, you can start to push
00:26:21You're 9.4 seconds behind Barrichello, 7.9 seconds behind your brother Michael. Here comes Ralf
00:26:27Yes, indeed. Ralf Schumacher across the line
00:26:30A 17.215
00:26:32Barrichello is still the man who's really flying. That was a slightly quicker lap from Ralf than for Michael though on that previous lap
00:26:39And Barrichello with this light car is going very quickly indeed
00:26:43We're still some way off the lap record
00:26:45But still of course the car relatively heavy at this stage of the race. Looking down the order Trulli in fourth, Coulthard in fifth
00:26:52Then Jenson Button sixth, Kimi Räikkönen in seventh, Nick Heidfeld eighth ahead of Felipe Massa in ninth
00:26:57Mikasalo running in 10th ahead of Villeneuve, Frentzen still in 12th and 13th place for De La Rosa, Irvine 14th
00:27:04In fact, he's just been passed by Takuma Sato. So Irvine now down to 15th
00:27:08And well, I mean imagine Takuma Sato
00:27:10He's barely had a chance to pass somebody in a real race in a Grand Prix
00:27:14He's found one space up to 14th place Irvine. There's a battle going on all through the field with Sato, Irvine, Pannis
00:27:21Mark Webber that little bit further behind
00:27:23So a great close-up view of McLaren versus Renault
00:27:27Using the curbs a little bit and you've got the view from the just behind that front wing
00:27:32Jenson Button ahead, Kimi Räikkönen is the man we're riding on board with
00:27:36And a great challenge between those two. Barrichello
00:27:39Just slightly ahead, 2.8 seconds the advantage. Another new fastest lap from Rubens on that lap. Rausche-Schumacher again
00:27:46Quicker than his brother by three hundredths of a second. Very little to choose between them in terms of pace here
00:27:52As Rausche tries to close the gap up on Michael Schumacher
00:27:58So Michael just trying to control things there at the moment in second place as across the line go Trulli and Coulthard
00:28:07Hasn't quite found a way past yet
00:28:09Both of them having to work a little bit through that fast left-hander now building up to and Barrichello in trouble
00:28:16Oh Rubens Barrichello
00:28:18Is it going to be eight non-finishes in a row here in Brazil? It looks very likely the god
00:28:24I'm not sure that isn't something in the rear suspension
00:28:26You can see Barrichello's head looking in the mirror
00:28:29I think trying to get a glimpse and I think he's trying to get a glimpse of what's going to happen
00:28:33I'm not sure that isn't something in the rear suspension
00:28:35You can see Barrichello's head looking in the mirror. I think trying to get a glimpse and I suspect I don't know
00:28:40But I'm feeling that might be something in the rear suspension has let go because Barrichello's pace suddenly stopped
00:28:46There's certainly no mechanical signs of any engine problem. No the suspension looks fine
00:28:51So maybe it was just something that he is hydraulics or electronics
00:28:54Those are the two the likely areas for trouble for a modern formula one car
00:28:59Oh, what a great shame for the fans who've turned out in their thousands here today to support him and it's gone wrong
00:29:05So early on in this race. We're only on the 17th lap and Rubens hasn't finished a race yet this year
00:29:12Of course the crash took him out in australia engine let go last time in malaysia
00:29:17And now something else has gone wrong. It shouldn't have worked out this way. He's in the 2001 car john
00:29:21This one's supposed to be reliable
00:29:24Yes, but sometimes uh, you know what they say and for rubens barrichello for the third time this year
00:29:29It has happened. I think the blow-up particularly in malaysia was a bitter pill
00:29:33He was comfortably in the lead of the race and all of a sudden that engine let go
00:29:37right another battle going on as they cross the line and
00:29:41Well barrichello just getting out of the car as uh, we all can't express the disappointment
00:29:47He must feel how can you have eight non-finishes in a row here in brazil in your home race?
00:29:52Where michael schumacher has never had a non-finish. It just doesn't seem to be fair, but that's the way it goes sometimes
00:29:59Well, they're the team. They're just looking at the pictures. They're just saying well
00:30:03You can't get worse than that on easter sunday. Can you rubens?
00:30:06Great shame for him. Michael schumacher our race leader then he was passed by barrichello
00:30:11Although we did expect barrichello to make an early stop, of course
00:30:15Eight seconds the gap now. Oh look at michael
00:30:18We saw him spin up there on our coverage on one of the free practice sessions
00:30:22He almost did it again that time look how hard michael schumacher is pushing. He knows he's got now his brother behind him
00:30:27He there was no cushion barrichello would inevitably when his pit stops fallen back behind
00:30:32But he's now got his brother in the williams there as the ferrari ends the straight the williams comes on to the straight
00:30:37And they are concerned that williams and ralph schumacher are a one-stop strategy
00:30:42I don't believe that michael schumacher can get through this race on a one-stop strategy
00:30:46I suspect he's on two but probably carrying more fuel than barrichello
00:30:50He was certainly very very light at the start of this race
00:30:54But the important thing is on that last lap ralph schumacher put in a quick lap
00:30:57He was two tenths of a second faster than michael schumacher
00:31:00We could see how hard michael was trying by the way
00:31:03He got out of shape under brakes for the first corner and there's no doubt that the williams bmw
00:31:08Is looking quicker and again a new fastest first sector time for ralph schumacher
00:31:12He's closing on his brother and it looks very very comfortable for ralph schumacher. None of the hard work
00:31:18You can see that michael schumacher's pushing the car to the limit ralph's just sitting there
00:31:22Hand movements very gradual very predictable. Nothing dramatic
00:31:26Watch schumacher coming across start finish line again as he breaks into this very difficult to see and project into turn one
00:31:35There's the gap we can see as he comes across the line
00:31:387.3 seconds between them and on that lap again, he picked up nearly half a second on michael schumacher
00:31:45He runs wide in turn one and enrique bernalde back in the garage with a problem
00:31:49But ralph schumacher on that lap one sixteen eight point nine
00:31:53Ran wide so he'll allow brother to claw back a little bit more. Let's look back and see. Oh, it's one of the minorities alex young
00:31:59Yep, just losing control. We've seen him spin a few times this weekend get on the brakes alex. Yep. He's done that
00:32:04That's one of those areas where they've taken the gravel away and put down the extra grippy tarmac and the runoff section
00:32:09Just a quick note john that montoya has passed a few people now and he's climbed back up through the field
00:32:14He's up into 17th position
00:32:16But now he's got another 11 second gap between himself and the minardi of mark weber
00:32:21But he's lapping pretty quickly around the one minute 17 and a half
00:32:24but the difficulty that montoya will face is as he gets into the meat of the
00:32:28The midfield those cars as much as they may try to get out of his way
00:32:31They are actually racing for position montoya will expect no favors because he is not coming up to lap them
00:32:37He's coming up to pass them for position. So they are not obliged to get out of his way
00:32:42It's up to montoya to use his equipment to get past whenever and wherever possible
00:32:47Still the battles continue up front as michael schumacher
00:32:51Trying to stay ahead of his brother ralph schumacher up front and as I mentioned the gap 7.3 seconds last time around
00:32:57Jano trulli in third position david kuhlfahrt in fourth button in fifth and then kimmy reichardt in sixth ahead of nick heidfeld
00:33:04And then mika salo up to eighth position now
00:33:08With mass at ninth and villnerv into tenth but that little moment ralph schumacher had
00:33:12At the end of the lap we were watching these cars come through on cost ralph schumacher time
00:33:17The gap has actually extended back up to 8.9 seconds
00:33:21So one little move coming to this corner braking just too late running wide as we saw ralph do
00:33:26Get onto the dirty bit of track you pick up dirt in your tires
00:33:28You get rubber the next two or three corners you spend cleaning those tires up and all that hard work is for nothing
00:33:35This was takuma sato managing to get past
00:33:38Fine, was it? Oh, no
00:33:40Or was he trying to get he's trying to get past de la rosa that time and it didn't work again
00:33:45I mean that was scary because he was so close to the jaguar. There was barely room between them
00:33:49I don't know why there wasn't contact with the wheels
00:33:51But again sato showing that he's not short in the bravery stakes dive down the inside mist is breaking on the dirty part of the racetrack
00:33:59I mean if he can get this guy get a handle on him and get him to control his his
00:34:05Speed
00:34:06They may have a winner on their hands. Yeah, he certainly seems to have lots of talent
00:34:09It just needs teaming at this stage now
00:34:12Michael schumacher getting in amongst the back markers passing alex young any moment here
00:34:17Who's getting the blue flags to say get out of the way?
00:34:19You've got the race leader coming up
00:34:20So he hopefully will stay to one side of the track here and not do a joss verstappen
00:34:24Who took out montoya at this point last year in the race?
00:34:27Well, he didn't do that
00:34:28He got on the brakes early enough michael schumacher goes through cleanly and he's maintained that gap on this last lap
00:34:348.7 seconds but michael still attacking although ralph was a fraction faster on the overall that time slightly further down the field
00:34:42jenson button under severe attack from kimmy reichan and just half a second between button and fifth and reichan and sixth
00:34:49As they come across start finish line and reichan and putting in personal bests on that last lap on the first sector
00:34:56Well, michael schumacher, can he maintain the pace in the ferrari to deny williams on this occasion?
00:35:02Certainly with the way things are looking good at the moment
00:35:05But it may well be that he has to stop earlier and may well have to stop twice
00:35:09We don't know yet still in the relatively early stages about a third distance completed nearly there
00:35:14Anyway, and this is the battle between truly and cool fad
00:35:18Well, I can't get any closer than you're watching it
00:35:20It says 0.2 of a second as it goes across the start finish line
00:35:23I promise you it's less than that now as they sweep through these very low speed first second gear turns
00:35:30No advantage from a tyre perspective both cars on michelin tyres
00:35:34Both cars probably running fairly high levels of fuel at the start of the race
00:35:38Kulthar certainly has no advantage in a straight line over the renault of jarno truly
00:35:43And i'll tell you
00:35:45Mercedes-benz and everybody else should think a lot about what renault have done with this very wide angle v10 engine
00:35:50111 degrees was very problematic at the start of 2001
00:35:55It's starting to become right now. Yeah, it looks as though it's got some decent horsepower now, doesn't it?
00:35:59Because again kulthar can't get close enough to challenge into the first corner and once again
00:36:05He has to follow truly through the bend lose aerodynamic downforce and that drops him a little further back
00:36:11Once again, michael schumacher did a 1 minute 17.4 as opposed to ralph schumacher 116.7 last time around
00:36:17So again, ralph just closed up the gap slightly montoya did a 117.3
00:36:22And montoya now 5.6 seconds behind mark weber in 16th position
00:36:27Well kulthar closes up as they come through the ferradura corner
00:36:31There's not really very much you can do you can just put pressure on the driver ahead of you
00:36:35You can move your car around and try and get him to start looking in his mirrors
00:36:39But really where david kulthar's got to start to think very hard about what he can do with yanno trulli
00:36:43Will be as they come to the end of the second sector of this circuit
00:36:47As they come through the downhill mergullo corner try not to break as late as he's done previously and then pick up the throttle
00:36:53It's through this corner down the bottom as jordan's are preparing for takumo sato to come in for his early pit stop
00:37:00Shame he cut away from what was going on with kulthar
00:37:03But we'll see whether he can do anything with the renault ahead of him
00:37:06Well, that might explain why takuma has been able to overtake people. Uh, we'll try to overtake people
00:37:11Anyway, he's having uh running a fairly light car if jordan are already making sure that he's coming into the pits
00:37:18They're the only team so far that we're seeing preparing
00:37:21I'll make a solo in the lead toyota as he battles with nick heidfeld for seventh place
00:37:27That's a very impressive effort once again from toyota have to say didn't expect this sort of performance and once again salo
00:37:34Showing that they can run the toyota formula one car in the top 10 very competitively
00:37:39There you see the differences in that middle sector of the the gap closing from ralph schumacher to michael schumacher
00:37:45They were 7.9 seconds of drift when they came across the start finish line at the end of lap 23
00:37:51Coming up to the end of lap 24 whether it be 7.7 7.6
00:37:55It is closing. It's fractional. It's not enough. But michael schumacher is driving his ferrari on the limit
00:38:02Yeah, this is classic michael schumacher absolutely on the limit every lap
00:38:06He has to do every lap like a qualifying lap and he did a 1 16.6 on that last lap
00:38:12And that is his personal best so far and he's stuck at a brother ralph
00:38:16The gap has gone from 7.9 up to 8.4
00:38:19So did schumacher make a mistake in that lap?
00:38:22We didn't see anything but certainly michael pushing pushing ross braun will be on the radio to him telling him what he needs to do
00:38:29They'll be looking at the mid-stop window not so much as when to come in but when to get back out on track
00:38:33But it's clear. Kulthar has a good run this time on Jarno Trulli trying to go for it down the inside
00:38:38But again, he's not quite close enough and it's a repeat performance behind as Raikkonen continues to pressurize Jensen Button
00:38:45But again, they can't quite find a way past these two Renault's well Kulthar in fourth position
00:38:51But michael schumacher john this is where he is. So brilliant is lap after lap putting in
00:38:57Such commitment throughout the race not just on one lap but time after time
00:39:02well
00:39:02we've seen it since michael schumacher became a grand prix driver and so many races have been won by michael with the
00:39:08The guidance of ross braun in the pits. They've seen victory where it was. There was no victory. No one thought that
00:39:15Schumacher or a bad or a ferrari or a bennetton as it may have been could win on a given day yet
00:39:19They made victories happen
00:39:22Well, we'll find out what happens. Of course, it'll come down to strategy as well
00:39:25Just come into the pits jack villeneuve. So he's come in fairly early lap number 25
00:39:31For his first pit stop and that means that he's on a two-stop strategy
00:39:36And we wait to see what else other people are on that drops him back down the order
00:39:40Of course montoya meanwhile is now right with mark webber
00:39:42Let me tell you as they crossed the line last time it was 0.2 of a second between them
00:39:46I think we might have seen uh montoya get past by the time we see him once more across start finish
00:39:52And montoya will be in that big group of cars involving people like panis. Irvine and de la rosa
00:39:58Oh again, reichen and trying trying so hard to find a way past jensen button
00:40:02But cannot just get his mclaren just far enough up as they get into the brake zone to put it alongside jensen button and take away
00:40:10Button's fifth place. Well, this really is team formation stuff as truly holds on to that third position
00:40:16There's button running in fifth with kimmy reichen and desperately trying to find a way past
00:40:21Well, he's just got to keep patient keep cool at this stage in a race
00:40:25Don't take too many risks because it may open up for you as long as you're in the right place at the right time
00:40:32Well, I think it'll be a case of who will blink first
00:40:35In other words who will be first into the pits between these two teams renault or mclaren?
00:40:39My suspicion is that it will be the renault team
00:40:42Mclaren have got a very large fuel capacity and they've been known on many occasions to go deep deep deep
00:40:48Into a race before they make that one and only stop for the afternoon
00:40:52Let me tell you montoya got past mark weber on the last lap
00:40:55And in fact, he's passed massa now because mass has just been into the pit
00:40:59So montoya now up to 13th position and we've got a yellow that's because pannis has stopped
00:41:05Yes, just on the exit of the curve of the soul on the back straight. Olivier pannis's car has come to a stop
00:41:11We don't know the reason for we have to wait and see but in the meantime, michael schumacher is again pulling away
00:41:16From ralph schumacher in second place up to 8.6 seconds
00:41:20This is very keen of rubens to be running quite so fast on his way back to the pits waving to the crowd as he does
00:41:25So well, this is the pit lane. He's running down
00:41:27So he's got the grandstand
00:41:28There's olivier pannis on the exit of the pit lane on the other side of the racetrack
00:41:32That car will have to be removed to safety
00:41:35Hopefully he's managed to get the car into neutral. There is this situation in the regulations where it is mandatory
00:41:40You have got an external switch that will
00:41:43Enable the car to be put into neutral if the driver has lost the engine as a battle
00:41:48Mcnish dived on the inside
00:41:51Well, it's great the sad news for pannis. He joins barry kello as another driver not to have finished the first
00:41:57Three grand prix of the season. There's the yellow flag station just on the exit
00:42:03As schumacher makes his way past alex young and now ellen mcnish
00:42:07Will have another lap put on him
00:42:09yes, that's right and
00:42:12We'll keep an eye on that, you know not far ahead of michael was juan pablo montoya
00:42:16Because he's in that group a little further ahead that he'll be coming up to lap
00:42:21So that's an interesting situation
00:42:22Although montoya will have to fight his way through that traffic as quickly as possible
00:42:26And interestingly after that incident in turn four in the opening lap and montoya had contact with michael schumacher
00:42:32I believe schumacher did make a second move, but it appears at the present time
00:42:37The decision is that it was montoya's fault. He outbreaks himself
00:42:42Well, we shall wait and see watching the gap here between the two leaders 8.7 seconds
00:42:47It was as they came around last time
00:42:49montoya up into 12th position now and the next job of his will be to try and get past eddie irvine and pedro
00:42:56de la rosa in the two jags
00:42:58Takuma osato who's already been in the pits is appearing to be back in the pits for a second time
00:43:02in the meantime montoya
00:43:05Showing up purple in that final. Oh, look at michael
00:43:08He got so out of shape there under braking he's behind mcnish and I thought he'd lost it that time
00:43:13Well, I think what he was doing was looking ahead of him. He's trying to gauge where he was going to catch the toyota
00:43:18He knows that further ahead. There is montoya there between the two jaguars
00:43:22He wants to catch montoya at a part of track cash. I beg your pardon catch mcnish at a part of track
00:43:27Where he will not lose time so he has to balance his momentum with what that of mcnish's is
00:43:33So not to catch him now mcnish is getting the blue flag
00:43:36He will be warned that the race leader is coming up behind him and that the first opportunity or any opportunity
00:43:42Mcnish pulls over to the I thought he was going to pull over to the left
00:43:45He will do so not down to this left hander, but into the next right, please
00:43:51He's getting the signal to move out of michael's way, otherwise, they'll get a fine and it's a difficult section of track
00:43:57You have to let you will have to let him pass
00:44:01To let him pass i'm sure
00:44:08Now whether mcnish's judgment is right or not has he gone past four stations
00:44:11That is the question but I think that the team were right to say let him go through mcnish could have backed off
00:44:17And gotten himself out of a potential problem
00:44:19He's now going to let him go through here into turn one
00:44:22But michael's hand make him out of the cockpit. He may not necessarily be entirely happy about that
00:44:27So
00:44:29He's let him through now, this was the moment before watch this one
00:44:34Way, he did get it sideways coming in very early again
00:44:37That's almost a replay of what we saw in practice on saturday morning when again the back of the car suddenly steps out
00:44:44This time he connected at the previous time the car took a turn to the left
00:44:47Finished up across the grass across that high friction tarmac and had backed it into the tire barrier
00:44:53Michael you are on the limit but snooze his brother ralph schumacher
00:44:56The gap has now closed once again has gone to the lowest has been in any point in the race
00:45:006.5 seconds and ralph schumacher is currently the quickest man on the track. Look at this again
00:45:06He's dirt tracking this thing. He's all over the place sideways, but still going quickly as the battle
00:45:11Continues between the renaults and the mclarens that's truly versus koulthard coming through picture not far behind them his button with raikkonen
00:45:18But michael schumacher really trying hard at this stage six and a half seconds ahead of his brother ralph schumacher
00:45:25This race is certainly not over because michael knows he's having to put everything on the line to stay in front montoya now trying to get
00:45:32Past uh, de la rosa. This is yes. I don't think there'll be too much trouble
00:45:36Montoya on the other side of the circuit the racing line montoya on the inside
00:45:40He did the right thing he got out of montoya's way
00:45:43He knows the bmw williams has got the pace
00:45:45And he knows that montoya if he doesn't get past him he might even go over the top of him good job
00:45:49You could make p3
00:45:53So he's being told by race engineer tony ross that he could get up to position three
00:45:58And well, that won't satisfy montoya. He's out to win this race. There's no doubt about that
00:46:03He will be fuming but at the moment he's trying to control
00:46:05That aggression that he must feel after what happened on the first race
00:46:09And he's just got to concentrate on the job of driving the car as efficiently as possible
00:46:13Well, everybody thought that montoya would be the driver trying to get under michael schumacher's skin
00:46:17But I think right now if michael schumacher is returning the compliment and getting really under the skin of the colombian
00:46:23Two races in succession now, there's been contact
00:46:27On the first lap not necessarily the first corner of the first lap and on both occasions
00:46:31It would appear that montoya has suffered more than he feels is fair
00:46:35Yeah, he's picked up the drive-through penalty, of course last time in malaysia
00:46:38Although michael had to make the stop for the wing change. Look at the gap between these two 5.7
00:46:44Seconds ralph schumacher is using the opportunity. Malkin is more in traffic right now
00:46:49He's got pedro de la rosa or servine in fact ahead of him
00:46:54So ralph schumacher using the clearer air the clearer track no problem for all teammates
00:46:59Michael slips through dives on the inside
00:47:02Doesn't lose any time that overtaking or that lapping maneuver on the arrow
00:47:08So he goes through five and a half seconds. There is montoya just coming through the shot
00:47:13Schumacher michael that is five and a half seconds ahead of brother ralph
00:47:17As the two of them still push as hard as possible at this stage in the race montoya in ninth place
00:47:24But still having to stay ahead of michael schumacher if possible as he cuts his way through the traffic one minute
00:47:3017.0 from montoya on that last lap quick note to alan mcnish not particularly quick on that last lap
00:47:36But he has been lapping very quickly
00:47:38It's just right at the back because of his problems on the opening lap and this battle continues
00:47:43for third place truly still holding off david cool thought cool third seemingly
00:47:47Unable to find the momentum out of the corner onto the pit straight turn 13 that uphill corner
00:47:53He just doesn't have the drive or the horsepower to do anything about giano trulli's reno
00:47:58And this battle john between the mclaren's and the reno's allowing for reliability will all come down
00:48:03To how much fuel they started the race with how long they have to stop for when they make their stop
00:48:08And getting back out again, and you can see that we've completed
00:48:1131 laps 32 laps now
00:48:13In fact, the lead has just gone over the line 32 laps completed 39 laps left to go
00:48:18We're getting towards that half distance mark
00:48:20But some of these guys will have started with a very heavy tank of fuel and go quite a long way beyond half distance
00:48:26Before they have to stop and that's very much determined by two factors
00:48:29One in principle is your tire situation
00:48:31And secondly the other is about how much fuel you can actually take on board
00:48:35And at one stage two or three years ago teams were building cars with fairly small tanks
00:48:39Until they realized that they were handicapping themselves build a big tank
00:48:43Or it may have some limitations in other areas, but it gives you more strategy more advantages when it comes to the race
00:48:50So on board with kimi raikkonen
00:48:52This wonderful view from just behind the front wing. Let's just ride with him a moment as he comes up across
00:48:58the start finish area
00:49:06Drops downhill into the left-hander
00:49:09Here the traction control working
00:49:11And then the power coming in from that mercedes v10 engine. Well, are these four having a ding dong?
00:49:17So is mickie salo. He's having a great battle with nick. Heidfeld
00:49:21That's a battle for seventh place just behind the roof of four cars
00:49:25And there's only 0.6 of a second between the toyota in seventh play our eighth place and heidfeld cyber in seventh
00:49:34Well, that's a good battle to watch. And in fact, those two are being hunted down by montoya
00:49:39Although he's a long way behind a bit of a mistake there from jenson button got a bit out of shape
00:49:44Managed to gather it all up. But again, you can see how hard they're trying
00:49:485.4 seconds
00:49:50The gap suddenly stalled out. It was coming down by lumps and chunks
00:49:54But now just at 5.4 seconds michael schumacher ralph schumacher back into a clear air situation
00:50:00As we see race leader come up just overtaken pedal de la rosa a lap down for de la rosa
00:50:06Michael schumacher then let's see what lap times he can do
00:50:08Montoya doing a similar lap times in fact to both michael schumacher and ralph schumacher
00:50:13First and second the pace doesn't seem to be that different between the ferrari and the williams bmw at this point in the race
00:50:21But what's going to happen when it comes time to stop who can go that bit deeper?
00:50:25Who won't have to put quite so much fuel on board?
00:50:27We'll have to wait and see critical here for ralph schumacher not to overrun
00:50:31Pedro de la rosa as they come down through the megulo now get on the brakes ralph
00:50:35Be careful pick up the throttle. You've got horsepower. You've got the drive
00:50:40Pedro de la rosa will be aware that he's about to go a lap down
00:50:43He was being very generous indeed to other drivers when he was being lapped
00:50:47He's quite a long way behind though with de la rosa de la rosa
00:50:49Maybe able to sneak through turn one or he may opt to let him go let schumacher. No, he's not
00:50:54That's going to be de la rosa's corner
00:50:55Yes, and maybe ralph can now line him up gets a bit sideways on the curve there
00:51:00Try and line him up for the next hairpin, but that little mistake might drop him back too far
00:51:04That's the whole key michael schumacher on the same lap lap 34 went quickest 115 601 personal quickest lap I should say
00:51:13Yeah, another is yeah quick lap indeed from michael schumacher 5.9 seconds the gap between himself
00:51:19Now this is where ralph needs to get through quickly
00:51:22They're now into the twisty section of track and you don't want to get stuck behind someone in this part
00:51:27Of the track because it's very difficult to overtake until you come back round to start finish area
00:51:33And this is where michael has the chance to pull away slightly
00:51:36And let's have a look and see has he got through. Yes. No, he hasn't now
00:51:41Ralph dives down the inside de la rosa
00:51:43Well, I mean he couldn't have done very much more
00:51:46He would have had to have literally lifted off the throttle and waited
00:51:48Over a second for ralph schumacher to come through was went wrong here for ralph
00:51:52Because he didn't really get the momentum up then and to turn one
00:51:55He got all out of shape because he's watching de la rosa rather than watching what he is doing himself
00:52:00Montoya continues his progress now 7.7 seconds behind micasalo in eighth place
00:52:07Let's see what the gap is this time as they come across the line
00:52:10It's gone out a bit more 6.8 seconds
00:52:12Then the gap between michael schumacher and ralph in the williams truly is still in third place in the renault coulthard
00:52:19In fourth, but they're a long long way
00:52:22Behind the top two you saw montoya just go around the descent of the lago. There's michael schumacher
00:52:27So the distance between leader and montoya currently running in ninth place is a little more than about four seconds
00:52:33That's right
00:52:34But they're doing the same sort of lap times
00:52:35In fact on that last lap montoya had a clearer run and he was faster than michael schumacher
00:52:40Take a look at montoya charging attacking after the new front wing was fitted
00:52:46He has certainly moved up the order
00:52:48But he's some 7.7 seconds behind that very tight battle between heidfeldt and salo for seventh position
00:52:55And there's this battle continuing along for third place between
00:52:59Jarno, truly and david coulthard and immediately behind it is jensen button and kimmy reikin in
00:53:04And then michael schumacher comes across the line at the end of this lap. We will be just over half distance lap 36
00:53:10As again, we go on board with coulthard not able to get himself into position traffic up ahead
00:53:16And that's mark weber
00:53:18So that's maybe an opportunity for coulthard if arno truly finds himself slightly compromised by the australian
00:53:25All right
00:53:26We'll have to wait and see on that one still waiting for the leaders and michael schumacher's just set a new fastest lap
00:53:32Waiting for the leaders to make their pit stop
00:53:34They're all looking to be on a one pit stop strategy
00:53:38And the only people really on a two pit stops further down the order at the moment people like villeneuve
00:53:42Who made a stop sato who stopped early as well, but most of these front runners
00:53:48It's definite are on one stop
00:53:49The question is how far into the race will they go before they make that one stop?
00:53:54And mark weber in the minority did a great job to get out of the way
00:53:57He literally pulled off track onto the dirty line to let truly and coulthard go through
00:54:02And that really is what you expect from a driver running in the position of weber and well done mark
00:54:06He used your mirrors an intelligent drive
00:54:08Ralph schumacher not getting his way through the traffic quickly enough 7.6 seconds behind his brother
00:54:13Now we're riding on board with david coulthard still
00:54:16Trying to find a way past yano truly
00:54:18But tell you what truly is doing a great job here in the race john
00:54:21Some people have criticized him for not being consistent enough in the races, but he's doing everything asked of him here
00:54:28Yes, they've got massa felipe massa ahead of them
00:54:32But really I want to just how fast david coulthard could have gone if he'd been ahead of the reno
00:54:37Of course, the problem is he's not it's almost irrelevant
00:54:40But i'm sure after the race there will be some comment that david said i'm sure I was quicker than the reno
00:54:46But I couldn't find the way past such a contradiction to me
00:54:49Well, we'll have to see if that's the story afterwards
00:54:51There's montoya in shot and there is michael schumacher the two of them who made contact once again on the first lap here in brazil
00:54:58and now
00:55:00Montoya has to make sure he doesn't get lapped
00:55:02It's unlikely because they're lapping at pretty much the same speed. What a great battle
00:55:06It could have been it could have been a three-way battle rather than a two-way battle that it is at the moment
00:55:10Between michael and ralph and I say it's a two-way battle, but the gap between them is still 8.1
00:55:15Seconds and we're seeing a real tour de force. I mean a drive of supreme quality from michael schumacher
00:55:20He's extended the gap once again. It came down to under six seconds back up to 8.1
00:55:25Michael schumacher putting in fastest lap after lap 16.363 was his last lap
00:55:33Brother ralph
00:55:34Well, I don't know he's made of quite the same stuff as michael is I think that michael is that much more special
00:55:40Than ralph and ralph is proving to be pretty special in themselves
00:55:44This is another fast lap from michael schumacher coming up
00:55:46Although ralph schumacher quick on the middle sector, but this is likely to be a new fastest lap from michael schumacher
00:55:52116.235
00:55:54Indeed, it's a new fastest lap
00:55:56But what's his brother going to do?
00:55:57It's going to be another quick one from the williams bmw driver at 116.5
00:56:02Three tenths of a second slower so the gap still opens out between them as the fuel load burns off
00:56:07And one or two more pit stops being prepared toyota getting ready now. Yes, but also you see montoya
00:56:13He's closing down to micasalo and nick heidfeld and in the meantime
00:56:16Michael schumacher is coming up to well ideally for schumacher put a lap on montoya
00:56:21Wouldn't that be sweet?
00:56:22But the ferrari pit is ready and michael schumacher will be the only ferrari making a pit stop here this afternoon
00:56:28Yes, it does look as though ferrari are beginning to prepare
00:56:30They are ferrari are getting ready in pit lane now for michael schumacher's pit stop
00:56:35Now how much further than this will williams be able to go?
00:56:38We're just over the halfway distance point, but the question is can ralph do anything?
00:56:43He just doesn't quite seem to have the pace of his brother at the moment
00:56:47And it's a question of how much fuel they started with and how long he'll have to sit in the pit lane to be refueled
00:56:54And this is also remember the first race for ferrari's f2002
00:56:59That's the designated number of the car schumacher comes now. He's going to make the cut into pit lane
00:57:04He'll come in at racing speed all of a sudden he'll be on the brakes
00:57:07There's a signal to the right that says 80 kilometers per hour ralph schumacher for the first time this afternoon
00:57:12Ben is going to take over the lead. He is indeed
00:57:15And mikasalo came in at the same time. You just saw an akara head
00:57:19That was mikasalo coming into the pits and a brand new set of unscrubbed bridgestones going on board now
00:57:25How much fuel how much longer is it going to take to get the fuel in they're clearing out the side pods 12.6 seconds
00:57:32Well, that's pretty much what you'd expect on a single stop for ferrari
00:57:36I wonder if williams will have to put a little less fuel in depends if they started any heavier than that
00:57:41We'll wait and see 12.6 seconds stationary and it all looks clean as he comes out get through the pit lane exit safely
00:57:48And out he comes once again
00:57:50We wait to see how far into the race schumacher almost over running. I don't go over that line michael
00:57:55Until now you're okay. You can pull out. No and salo just goes to the left or to the right
00:58:00Oh, he doesn't know he's there does he
00:58:03He does now
00:58:06That gave him a little bit of a scare
00:58:08But as you can see the amount in the ferrari enough to make it through to the end
00:58:12Of the race and that's as we'd expected a one stop for him
00:58:16But when will ralph schumacher come in also waiting for montoya who's moved up to eighth place overall
00:58:22The question now is how fast can ralph schumacher run?
00:58:24He wasn't really being impeded by anybody ahead of him was only the back markers
00:58:28Michael schumacher really was the quickest car on the circuit ralph was push push push. He'll be told by the pits
00:58:35He's got to make it as far as he can the deeper they can go
00:58:38Of course the shorter their time will be at a standstill in the pits. They're the williams team. They're sitting back
00:58:43It's a bit of a sunday afternoon for them. No easter eggs right now
00:58:46But if they win no doubt there will be well, let's wait and see what happens a 16.370
00:58:51Lap there from ralph schumacher. That's pretty good. Not quite the fastest overall though
00:58:57Michael schumacher still with the fastest lap in this race so far and we'll see whether he can hold on to that at a
00:59:04116.235
00:59:06Set just before he came in to make his one and only pit stop montoya
00:59:10Meanwhile, only 1.2 seconds behind heidfeld as they went round last time
00:59:15Be interesting to watch what michael schumacher does in his first flying lap as we go back to this battle
00:59:21For third place. Jarno trulli still
00:59:23Abled very comfortably to keep david coolthard behind him and kimmy reichardt
00:59:28And now has got ahead of jensen buttons who has been a change for fifth place mclaren's now fourth and fifth
00:59:34Right. Yes at last kimmy reichardt has managed to find his way past that reno of jensen button and now closing up to his teammate
00:59:42And you can see the muck on david coolthard's car as he's been sitting in the slipstream of jarno trulli
00:59:47For lap after lap after lap and he still can't find a way through now
00:59:51One of these guys going to stop surely it won't be too long now
00:59:54Well coolthard again looks threatening with jarno trulli, but at a part of track
00:59:58He can really do very little with you can see the helmet on coolthard
01:00:01However, there's been oil vapor coming out of the back of the the reno and it's just you know
01:00:05It's a problem for a driver. You've got ripoffs on your visor, but you know if you get so much oil
01:00:10You run out of ripoffs then you have an opaque visor visibility is awful
01:00:14Let me just tell you montoya has just got parts nick heidfeld
01:00:18So that puts montoya into seventh position now and that puts him about 15 seconds off this group
01:00:24If you like this battle that's going on between the reno's and the mclaren's off the back of the group at least
01:00:29So montoya still charging and there the williams team projector position
01:00:34Says that montoya is capable at the pace
01:00:36He can run out of getting third place in this race who'd have thought at the end of the first lap
01:00:40Montoya almost flat last could finish up third. Oh off goes alex young
01:00:46And uh, where's that around the track? It's down at the turn four
01:00:49He's gone wide and I think he's managed to get back on again, actually
01:00:53Well, we'll keep an eye on that one. Alex has had one or two spins
01:00:56It has to be said ralph schumacher still out there still not heading for the pit lane by the looks of things
01:01:02Or his lap michael's lap was half a second slower
01:01:07Than ralph schumacher's fastest lap or last lap now that is not enough in my view. Michael
01:01:11Has got new tires, but he's got a lot of fuel on board
01:01:13That's a lot of weight and in my view ralph needs to extend that advantage. He's got 23.4 seconds
01:01:20You're going to need something like minimum
01:01:2234 35 peter winchell told us 42 seconds for a pit stop now
01:01:28Depending on the amount of fuel you need to take on board that can be flexible
01:01:31Last year, david coolthodge had the fastest pit stop and 33.037
01:01:35That sounds like a little bit of fuel quick tires back out
01:01:39So the best you can hope for is 33 seconds
01:01:41And that's not going to be enough, is it john with a gap between the two of them as you see there of 23.9
01:01:46Seconds ralph is no and off goes mcnish alan mcnish in the toyota has had a spin at turn four
01:01:54Trying to listen up on the radio. Oh, and he's he stole it. He stole
01:01:58Uninstalled. Oh, no, what a shame for alan mcnish. Is this going to be a safety car situation?
01:02:10Stuck in a not very pleasant part of the circuit very quick down into turn four and look you can see
01:02:15One of the minorities came down and tried to get out of the way and actually got onto the dirty part of track
01:02:19Meanwhile montoya's in the pits
01:02:21Let me tell you uh, juan. Pablo montoya has come into the pits on this the 43rd lap
01:02:27This was what happened to alan mcnish
01:02:29Well watch to see what happened to oh and it just broke away very viciously as he went into the corner
01:02:34Was that due to the result of his pit stop or was that something else? Certainly. It was a rear brake appeared to lock on
01:02:40Meanwhile, look there's montoya just coming out 9.6 seconds
01:02:43So they didn't put as much fuel didn't have to put as much fuel in as the ferrari
01:02:47Mcnish trying to oh no hut master's gone off felipe. Massa. That is who's taken off turn four as well
01:02:53Oh, dear. Oh, dear. It's all going wrong for him. He was down in 14th position for the brazilian and uh,
01:02:59Well, has he kept that one running? Sorry. It's not i'm still looking at the red sector which
01:03:03Masses up a turn five into ferradura and there you see that he's on that high grip. There we look a battle
01:03:11Oh, it was a contact there or not
01:03:14Oh, this was all very close. Yes, it was
01:03:17And that was with mark weber mark weber was battling for position there trying to get into 14th
01:03:22And there was contact between them now some more pit stops coming up here williams look ready to take ralph schumacher in and reno
01:03:28Are making a pit stop as well in the pits at the moment is jano. Truly
01:03:33Uh, there he is. We can see jano now being refueled
01:03:37And this is crucial in their battle with mclaren. That was a good quick stop for jano truly
01:03:41But this is the crucial one ralph schumacher with a 24 second advantage comes in
01:03:47But surely it won't be enough to get out in front of michael
01:03:52Watch the fuel go on board
01:03:5412 and a half liters per second. It would take you only four seconds to fill up a normal road car with the amount of fuel
01:04:00That goes so quickly into these machines out
01:04:03He comes but michael's already driving past indeed
01:04:05He is and also ralph has to do 50 miles an hour all the way down the pit lane until he gets
01:04:10Once he makes his descent then he can get up to speed but michael schumacher has regained ralph almost lost in the pit lane
01:04:16Michael schumacher regains the lead as ralph accelerates down the pit lane rejoins the track the gap
01:04:22Probably not a great deal of difference to where it was
01:04:25In fact, if anything is maybe marginally closer than prior to michael schumacher making his pit stop
01:04:30Yes, I think uh, you know, they've done a good job, but it's michael all over this race
01:04:35It's all about putting those laps together in the mid part of the race early to mid part where he's just
01:04:40Been flat out the whole time. He never backs off
01:04:43He doesn't make mistakes and even when he does he gets away with them with his reactions and car control
01:04:48And that is classic. Michael schumacher. It's been a brilliant drive into the pits now jensen button
01:04:58They're a bit slow just getting the fuel hose out but remember that fuel hose weighs about 60 kilograms
01:05:03It's very very heavy indeed
01:05:05But they managed to get it out and he's back into the race ben ralph schumacher took a calculated 83 liters of fuel
01:05:12As opposed to the 92 for michael schumacher as we get back on board with jarno truly
01:05:20So how's this going to settle down the two mclarens john still to come in they haven't stopped
01:05:24So we're uh
01:05:25Well, they nearly have because there they are indeed getting ready to accept one of the mclarens
01:05:30Goulthard's very quick on this lap and this could be the opportunity for them
01:05:34To come in and then stay ahead if they can just put in a couple of quick laps here
01:05:38They might be able to get themselves out ahead of jarno. Truly. That's the key
01:05:42Goulthard first of the mclarens into the pits
01:05:45Goulthard also quick on that in lap
01:05:47You see him come up at 50 miles an hour 80 kilometers per hour seems an interminable amount of time
01:05:54mclaren choosing to go very very late and deep into the race
01:05:57Again, the amount of fuel they have to take on board probably comparable to that of ralph schumacher
01:06:01In somewhere in the middle 80 liters, but here is jarno truly coming back and goulthard leaves the pit 10.2 seconds
01:06:07I think that jarno truly will actually retain his third place goulthard stop
01:06:12I don't think we'll be quick enough to see him get back out on track and keep third place. Here comes truly
01:06:17Goulthard in the pit lane. It's going to be a close one though. Let's watch them as they come down the hill here
01:06:22There is goulthard coming out of the pit and of course, he's got it done
01:06:27Yeah, it looks like it building up to speed and it looks like goulthard and mclaren have won this little battle
01:06:32He's got ahead of the renaults. What a great piece of work. That's what they've been trying to achieve
01:06:37But don't forget raikkonen is yet to stop he'll be coming in next time around and he was right with david
01:06:42So there could still be quite a battle when raikkonen rejoins between the two mclaren teammates
01:06:47Very close indeed great job by both teams that 10.2 second stop of goulthard
01:06:51I was well convinced it wasn't going to be quick enough, but clearly I was wrong
01:06:56Now we wait for kimi raikkonen to come in for his stop of the afternoon raikkonen currently showing in third place
01:07:02He's some 24 seconds behind ralph schumacher
01:07:04Who's 2.7 seconds behind race leader raikkonen in the pits?
01:07:08He put in a quick lap the lap before this one of 16.8
01:07:11That's one of the quicker laps we've seen from the mclaren so far
01:07:14So kimi knows the score you have to push as hard as possible when you've got some clear air before
01:07:19Your pit stop now a scrubbed set of michelins going on board the fuel hose 9.4 seconds
01:07:25This could get him out ahead of david goulthard. Yes half a second 0.6 of a second faster than goulthard
01:07:30So as he makes his way down the pit
01:07:33So slow, but that's the mandatory speed limit 50 miles an hour 80 ks per hour
01:07:37Now there's the benetton coming around turn one. There's raikkonen second car of those two
01:07:42Yeah, that's goulthard first, of course watch out for goulthard. That's the battle. There's raikkonen rejoining
01:07:47There's goulthard on the outside
01:07:49This is an important battle between these two and raikkonen sensibly slots in behind goulthard
01:07:54And what we thought might be the case that both mclarens were capable of running
01:07:58Marginally faster than both reynolds the pit stops probably very similar
01:08:02But the difference was reynolds stopped earlier
01:08:04It gave raikkonen and goulthard that opportunity to get a couple of quick laps in to give them that margin
01:08:11So, uh, well it's moved goulthard up into third position overall raikkonen now in fourth position
01:08:19Truly in fifth place button in sixth and montoya now 14 seconds behind jensen button
01:08:26That's going to be the interesting battle now to watch montoya and see whether he can close up to this group of
01:08:32mclarens and reynolds and whether he's got the pace to be able to
01:08:35Catch up and pass in the remaining 24 laps and the other thing does that 2002 ferrari have the legendary?
01:08:43ferrari reliability of recent seasons
01:08:47Well, I just wonder now we're going to see a battle going on between goulthard and raikkonen
01:08:52The gap has increased marginally david pulled away about a tenth of a second
01:08:57raikkonen, of course on four points from his
01:08:59Third place in in australia david goulthard yet to score this season
01:09:05Up the hill comes michael schumacher the gap between himself and ralph last time was only 2.6 seconds
01:09:11Now, let's just see what they're lapping at relative to one another here a 16.8 for michael a 16.9 for ralph
01:09:18It's still so evenly matched between these two cars the ferrari and the williams bmw
01:09:24So so close in terms of lap times and still michael with the advantage just again saw montoya
01:09:31Going through the picture ahead and he's still some 13.7
01:09:35Seconds off jenson button unless one of these two drivers makes an error
01:09:39The only thing that's going to bring them closer in my view will be traffic
01:09:43Whether michael meets at first or whether it gets
01:09:46Ralph is the one that suffers
01:09:48It's going to be tough. I think for montoya to catch jensen button, you know in time over this the remainder of this race
01:09:54But i'm sure he'll be pushing hard all the way
01:09:57And there is 23 laps to go and the renault still running quickly one minute 17.198 last time around
01:10:04Compared to montoya on a 116.882 riding on board with ralph schumacher though here in second position
01:10:10fuel switch confirmed
01:10:1410-4 mike and also be a position
01:10:19So
01:10:26A little bit of garbling on the radio, but
01:10:29Hopefully that's not distracting ralph schumacher
01:10:31Let's see the gap this time around as he comes across the line again
01:10:342.3 seconds and this time a fraction faster four tenths faster actually for ralph
01:10:40But then of course michael had some traffic to deal with just there getting past to alex young. I think he has just passed
01:10:47But this is maybe one of the rare occasions we're going to see the schumacher brothers battle for victory
01:10:53We did get a glimpse something a few years ago in the spanish grand prix where michael and ralph went side by side round
01:11:00Two of the corners near the completion of the lap to such a degree
01:11:03It allowed barrachello to slip through and get position. It was as if michael and ralph refused to yield to one another
01:11:09Well, they're not close enough to that. But this lap it is getting closer currently 2.3 seconds
01:11:14Yeah, it's probably about the same
01:11:16Well if it carries on like this
01:11:18It'll be very much a schumacher battle at the top of the points table montoya down in seventh at the moment
01:11:24The team reckon that he could get up to third
01:11:26But I think that's going to be quite a struggle here this afternoon and it's bad news for montoya in his championship challenge
01:11:32And we could well see a battle between the two brothers
01:11:35For the battle certainly in the early stages of this season cool fard looking good at the moment
01:11:40But oh dear, I don't want to say anything about david
01:11:42He's had so much bad luck so far this year at the moment
01:11:45He's running in third place reichen and his teammates in fourth truly unbuttoned for reno running in fifth and sixth places
01:11:51Montoya seventh heidfeld eighth then mika salo ninth takuma sato in 10th position
01:11:57And he's just uh come back out after his second pit stop
01:12:01Well, the ebb and flow of this battle for the lead
01:12:03A tenth of a second here last somewhere else
01:12:07Ralph schumacher not making any substantial impression on his brother
01:12:11Both drivers on the limit but you have to think that the equipment that ralph has
01:12:15Is in on the day superior what we're seeing from michael schumacher is something which really I didn't anticipate
01:12:22The thought that one pablo montoya was going to really run away from the field and supported by ralph schumacher was the favorite
01:12:28Outcome but michael schumacher is just well just continues never stops impressing
01:12:34But it's okay
01:12:37Oh
01:12:38It's all gone wrong for eddie irvine
01:12:41Look at the smoke coming from the back of that that surely isn't right
01:12:44Well, they said turn the oil pump on at the point irvine
01:12:48Complied with that instruction from the pitch. We got a puff of what looked like oil smoke to me
01:12:53But you know, maybe it was just a little drip
01:12:56At the point where it was turned on
01:12:58Yeah, maybe turning the oil pump on caused that smoke. Maybe uh, he is going to be all right
01:13:03He's currently running in 10th position sato. As I mentioned have just stopped. So he's dropped down the order again
01:13:08He's down into 13th position as we look at the lives super slo-mo and watch the ferrari in action
01:13:13But ben the gap is now down to 1.9 seconds the first time we have dipped below the two second barrier
01:13:21And ralph is now beginning to pick up the pace
01:13:23three tenths of a second faster on lap 51
01:13:27Of 71 20 to go wow
01:13:29It's certainly still a motor race here between the two schumachers the gap between first and second
01:13:35Just under two seconds as you watch michael schumacher throwing that ferrari 2002 car through the first senna s corner
01:13:43here in brazil
01:13:45And there you could see the just caught a glimpse of the williams going through as well
01:13:49That's how close they were as they went through that first corner
01:13:53The jensen buttons still under pressure further back as we again see that lead begin to shrink ralph schumacher is putting pressure on us this
01:14:00Michael schumacher just having used the ferrari so much putting so much pressure on
01:14:04His bridgestone tires that they're beginning to say look I can't take any more ralph
01:14:08Sensing that he's got michael on the run beginning to close that gap. It's slight every lap
01:14:14But there are plenty of laps remaining
01:14:16When they come across the line, it will be 19 to go across the line
01:14:20They come and the lap times this time as michael schumacher 116.8 another 116.4 from ralph
01:14:26He's been very consistent the last few laps
01:14:28The last three laps have all been 116.4 and he's gained about four tenths every lap
01:14:34So he's closing one and a half seconds the gap between the two of them now
01:14:38well
01:14:39Two people who know these boys better than any will be the schumacher parents and I can't imagine what they're thinking sitting watching this
01:14:44They've seen them grow up
01:14:46The difference in age is not really a problem
01:14:48But when they get together if they do if this cap comes down to less than half a second
01:14:53We're going to have one of the most exciting grumpy finishes I think ever on our hands
01:14:58He's still closing that first sector three tenths of a second faster than michael schumacher and michael
01:15:05Is struggling surely a little bit there, isn't he? He looks a little bit off the pace
01:15:09I think he's okay just uh through that left hander, but that first sector certainly ralph closing the gap up just a bit more
01:15:16And I think by the time we see these two cars come back
01:15:19Across dark finish line that gap is going to be closer to one second than one and a half
01:15:23Which is what it was and then went across the line lap 52
01:15:26Coming up to complete lap 53 michael a little faster through the middle sector
01:15:30In fact, so he was okay through that section
01:15:32But jean-taud, oh, he doesn't know quite what to make of this across the line
01:15:37This time the gap is going to be much the same. I think well another tenth of a second gained by ralph schumacher
01:15:43Oh
01:15:45This is great. This is what we want to see real battling between these two top teams
01:15:49We thought it was going to be montoya versus michael schumacher today
01:15:53But ralph really pushing hard and good news is the only car ahead of them is actually juan montoya
01:15:58It takes another three or four corners before we see truly button cool third and reichen and but they're about well
01:16:05Half a mile away. Montoya will be running similar pace to the two lead cars
01:16:09For the next 15 10 laps, we should see a pure battle between the schumacher brothers
01:16:16Yes, indeed. And uh, let's see whether ralph can keep it all smooth. Keep it controlled
01:16:20He certainly was a little bit scrappy there. Yeah, he really ran into the corner very late in the brakes had to gather it all up
01:16:27Lost maybe a half a tenth or something
01:16:31Nonetheless shows you the commitment and the pressure both drivers are applying to each other
01:16:36It's good stuff, isn't it as the ferrari that they brought here, especially for this race tries to be quicker again
01:16:44Michael is a fraction faster through the mid section of the track again
01:16:47Ralph was faster over the opening sector of the track and on this final sector
01:16:52Let's just watch as they come across the line again this time michael across the line first and ralph again closes the gap
01:16:59Fractionally, he's slightly faster on that final sector. Well
01:17:03Oh and Pablo Montoya, of course, he's ahead of michael schumacher and ralph schumacher, but he's the next car up
01:17:09They will see him as he enters turn four. They'll be coming out of turn three
01:17:15Still a long way behind jensen button. He's 10.1
01:17:18Seconds off jensen button, but on the last lap he gained some six tenths of a second
01:17:24So he is closing up and the question is whether he's got enough time to make up that 10 second disadvantage
01:17:32The problem for him is that the cars that are immediately ahead of him the four cars are all on michelin tires
01:17:38So there's no advantage from a tire point of view for one pablo montoya. And of course, he's having to drive knowing that
01:17:44All that went on in the first lap. You've got to put that out of your mind
01:17:47You've got to focus on what is ahead of you. He's got the potential
01:17:51It's marginal to get one point if he gets one point
01:17:54He might have the momentum to go on and take two points because yarnwood truly is only one and a half seconds ahead of jensen
01:18:00Don't worry about
01:18:03Yeah, that's right mark weber there he's down in 14th place behind the two reddos but uh
01:18:09Now this is interesting. What was all this about truly? He's got his hand out of the cockpit
01:18:14I don't know what he's waving at but looking down and seeing truly he's looking at uh, well this
01:18:19Somebody going very slowly there that he was passing didn't quite spot who that was a new fastest lap from ralph. Schumacher
01:18:24He's got the gap to under one second now between himself and the ferrari
01:18:28This battle is well and truly on as again. He closes up 16.224. That is the new fastest lap of the race
01:18:36And just watch the different body language of the ferrari and the williams
01:18:40Ferrari and bridgestone tires the williams on the michelin tire the tire that really was the dominant tire
01:18:45Throughout the qualifying only on friday morning. Did we see bridgestone looking very very strong?
01:18:50Since then it has gone all michelin's way until the race and only because of michael schumacher
01:18:56Rubens barricada did a blinding job
01:18:57But on a very light load of fuel and then all of a sudden retirement came and we are still waiting to see
01:19:02The reason for that retirement for now ralph schumacher getting close as he needs to at this part of track
01:19:07He doesn't need to run any closer. He will hurt himself
01:19:10It's here that he can make best use of his traction or the turn in the traction and the power of the bmw
01:19:17Yeah, this is where he wants the horsepower
01:19:19Three to use the boost button you can use the boost button
01:19:23Well, you heard it right here
01:19:25on digital f1
01:19:26You can use the boost button ralph. He's being told and i'm sure he will given half a chance
01:19:31And I think that relates to just upping the rev limiter rather than having something like a big turbocharger with an extra boost
01:19:38So ralph now being given the okay from the pitch to go go go
01:19:43As michael schumacher is only 0.6 of a second. That was a cast the line. It probably will fluctuate marginally
01:19:49It's actually more difficult now for ralph schumacher running this close to his brother than it was to catch him
01:19:54Yes, this is the difficult bit now running in the dirty air behind the ferrari
01:19:59The aerodynamics of his own car messed up effectively and making the car slide around that little bit more
01:20:05This is why he needs that engine to power him up the hill so well, but don't forget this new ferrari engine
01:20:10It's the first time we've seen this new ferrari engine in action. He's doing a pretty good job
01:20:14I think ralph schumacher is going to have only one opportunity to overtake his brother
01:20:18That will be a long pit straight in front of both the williamson ferrari team garages. He must get himself into position
01:20:24It's so critical down through the maguro corner coming up into turn 13 easy on the brakes get the turn in right get the power on
01:20:31Use the grip use the drive
01:20:33Yes, but is he close enough?
01:20:34He's still a long way behind as they climb up the hill
01:20:37And this is where he needs to be closing and closing and he's not closing enough
01:20:420.6 of a second last time around really now the gap is not so significant
01:20:46It's more a question of track position as he tries to find a way past
01:20:50Michael gets a little bit wide and loose in turn one. Here's a chance for ralph to pick up the momentum
01:20:56Ralph maybe didn't quite anticipate it as quickly as he should have done. Michael will know that he was under pressure
01:21:01He did make a mistake watch his head check the mirrors as they come down into turn four
01:21:05This is great stuff. There's six and a half years difference between them in age will be effective now. He is right at 18
01:21:12Last lap
01:21:13There is a huge amount of difference in terms of experience
01:21:16Michael has won 54 grand prix and ralph has won only four, but he wants to beat his brother
01:21:22They've always been competitive from their karting days
01:21:25They still go karting together and they still want to beat each other
01:21:28And now ralph has a chance to pass the ferrari in the meantime while pablo montoya also running in fairly clear air
01:21:34There's only one car ahead of that jensen button 8.3 seconds away. We just want to use the boots
01:21:42I'm gonna listen up on the radio a little bit and take a look here on that last lap
01:21:47John a little bit of that mistake from michael schumacher. Yeah again in that turn misses the apex probably about a good two meters
01:21:53Ralph you can see how much he gained as he came through but I think he almost was caught unawares by michael making that little
01:21:58arrow
01:21:59Montoya has just put in a quick lap his personal best but not the fastest lap of the race
01:22:03It's closed him to within seven and a half seconds of jensen button for in the battle for six
01:22:08But it's the battle for the lead that we're watching so closely and strangely the gap
01:22:12On that last lap even in spite of michael making an error has widened to back over a second 1.1 seconds
01:22:19So maybe ralph was slightly unsettled by what happened to michael and in his own momentum just got oh, what's going on?
01:22:25All comes down to the tire wear as well. And in fact in the earlier stint of this race
01:22:29It did appear ralph couldn't lap as quickly as the ferrari towards the end of his stint on the tires
01:22:35I wonder if that's going to be a factor as we get into the closing stages of this race
01:22:41Well lap after lap michael schumacher just ahead of his brother ralph
01:22:47David coulthard is some 55 seconds behind this battle in running in third place reichen and in fourth just behind him
01:22:54And then of course truly and button for reno montoya is some 7.4 seconds off
01:23:00Then mika salo is 8 irvine 9th de la rosa 10th both jacks running reliably again villner is 11th ahead of heidfeld 12th
01:23:07Sato in 13th and mark weber and alex jung our final runners in 14th and 15th places
01:23:13Very shortly michael and ralph schumacher will be coming up to lap mark weber for the second time
01:23:19in the minority
01:23:20Montoya, of course is also ahead of him, but montoya running at identical pace to the two leaders
01:23:25Montoya now got the distance between himself and jensen button down to 6.9 seconds that one single point this afternoon
01:23:33May well be attainable. Yes, it may and of course don't forget that
01:23:37Jensen button is not that far behind his teammate. Yano truly only 1.2 seconds off his teammate
01:23:42But let's ride with ralph. Can he find a little bit more performance?
01:23:46It is so tough once you get to this distance behind another very evenly matched car to try and find a way past
01:23:52This is where he'd be wishing. Well, maybe I wish I had a little bit less wing perhaps a bit more straight line speed
01:23:58And then perhaps I could find a way past him
01:24:00But then of course it compromises you somewhere else watching david coulthard here running in third ahead of teammate
01:24:05Kimi raikkonen and there'll be many relieved faces in the mclaren mercedes-benz team to see the two cars running
01:24:11All right, they're not running on the pace coulthard some 55 56 seconds
01:24:15In fact behind michael schumacher and raikkonen running just one or 2.3 seconds as it is on this lap
01:24:21Behind coulthard in fourth place still with the two reno's of trulian button in fifth and sixth
01:24:26But it is one pablo montoya the man who again sets fastest race lap who is closing down 5.8 seconds
01:24:3312 laps to go of 71 laps
01:24:35So montoya still the man to watch on a charge after the first lap accident between himself and michael schumacher
01:24:41The contact that was made didn't affect schumacher on this occasion
01:24:45It took the front wing off montoya's car and he's been struggling to get back into the race ever since michael schumacher though
01:24:50Still has a race on his hands. Oh and alex young has spun yet again from 15th position
01:24:56And that's done in uh, just after
01:24:59Yes, it's just that's the penultimate of those very slow
01:25:02unpronounceable
01:25:04Brazilian the tight corners. I think it is that one and look at ralph again
01:25:07He's got a bit closer, but mark weber once again did a great job. That was the car
01:25:11They were going to have to lap he was advised by the pitch what was coming up
01:25:15He watched his mirrors. He got off the racing line out of the way. Let these two brothers go at it
01:25:20They're going at it. You can't get better than this
01:25:22There's a good lap last time around from ralph
01:25:24And in fact montoya has just set the fastest first segment time on this next lap as well
01:25:29So montoya still flying trying to close up to jensen button
01:25:32And here we arrive on board with ralph schumacher. This is where he needs a good exit
01:25:37This is where on the power
01:25:38He's trying to gain a little more momentum and close up to the back of the ferrari
01:25:43And I bet you one thing michael schumacher is probably very relieved
01:25:47To have his brother behind him and not one pablo montoya yellow flag at turn one. That's truly. Oh yano truly
01:25:53Where is the reliability he needed with just?
01:25:5810 laps to go
01:26:00Oh and the italian
01:26:02Just never seems to have things go his way at all a great shame
01:26:06He'd driven a superb race this afternoon and at the same time as truly sadly retires when pablo montoya once again
01:26:13Sets, look, there's the smoke. You can see what happened massive massive engine failure for one for yano truly
01:26:19But this puts montoya up into sixth place
01:26:224.6 seconds behind jensen button and i'm sure that button close enough behind truly will have been maybe unsettled and he may well have lost
01:26:29Momentum giving montoya the opportunity to take two places in the space of maybe a lap
01:26:34Well, we'll keep an eye on that one
01:26:36The yellow flag still down there at turn one, which is the worst place in a way because that's one of the main overtaking
01:26:41Opportunities, although you have to say we're getting a much clearer comparison between the engine power here today
01:26:47John, of course the new ferrari engine it is a wider v angle itself and it's showing to have great power
01:26:53But oh yano truly the disappointment of this young man 27 years old. He's 83rd grand prix
01:27:00He's had one second place finish in his career still to win a race and today he'd driven well
01:27:05But he's going to get nothing for it
01:27:07And there's a yellow flag up in turn one
01:27:09So ralph nowhere near close enough to attempt but it means that michael schumacher also is required to slow down
01:27:14Marginally when you go through this area as so as ralph schumacher no advantage or loss to either driver here
01:27:21back on the path through the quick left hander and
01:27:25It doesn't look as though the bmw can outdrag that new ferrari up the hill does it so he's going to have to find
01:27:30Some other way of getting past michael schumacher now the others still coming around the lap at the moment
01:27:37We'll wait to see what the gap between the likes of button and montoya is but there's a little time before they come back past us
01:27:44It was 4.1 seconds last time around. Yes buttons last lap after truly's blow up definitely slower
01:27:49But interestingly still was montoya's because that yellow flag did come out
01:27:53They had to slow down both drivers did slow down
01:27:55They were the two that probably lost out most because they were the two drivers that were closest to truly's blow up
01:28:01He might need reminding to use the boost limiter. He was into the trumpet limiter the last lap
01:28:09And we're hearing on the radio interesting once again, you know, the teams are monitoring they can monitor exactly what the engine revs are all
01:28:15the time
01:28:19They're just reminding ralph to use that boost limiter
01:28:23And as you said johnny ups the revs that he can use that little bit more
01:28:27They have a set rev limit and take a look here in the super slow-mo live as they come into turn one
01:28:34Just look at the tire again watching the tire deflect a little bit wide or the good good shot there of the brakes
01:28:41Used to do that by the way
01:28:42um, that's when they get really
01:28:45the coefficient friction goes up massively with eight with the
01:28:49carbon fiber discs
01:28:51um
01:28:52But it's definitive on the boost button. It's just coming. Okay to my left here and it is
01:28:57You can use more revs if you like. Okay, so it raises the rev limiter
01:29:01So when you heard him say the boost limiter, what it means is it actually raises the limit
01:29:05Uh on the engine a few hundred revs more and uh
01:29:09He's not on the limiter so early
01:29:13Cutting their way through bat markers now, this is turning out to be a fantastic battle
01:29:19thrilling
01:29:20Cat and mouse game now eight laps to go ralph
01:29:23Has been given the all-clear to use the boost button
01:29:26You can do what you like ralph go and go for it. You know, this is your big chance a big race against your brother
01:29:33for a grand prix
01:29:35It's a legitimate race. They're not in the same team. There's nothing
01:29:39That says that one must give way to the other
01:29:41Well, if michael holds this this is going to be a real bonus bonus ball for ferrari, isn't it? Because you know new car
01:29:48Brazil does seem to be a bit of a bugbear for them. They don't you know
01:29:52Always feel their cars perform well here
01:29:55So if this is the worst they think they're going to do
01:29:58Next race michael could do even better
01:30:03Okay, those of you listening at home that was an attempt at a joke this is like, you know
01:30:07The the following race we kind of expect michael to maybe go even further into the distance. What do you think?
01:30:13Well, if you want to watch this all the way from uh the cockpit of the
01:30:18uh
01:30:19bmw, then you can just flick to button six and there you are sitting in the car with
01:30:25ralph schumacher
01:30:27um staring at the back end of
01:30:30One of the world's greatest racing drivers in one of the world's greatest cars
01:30:34but is um
01:30:35At the moment looking a little bit threatened
01:30:39So we flick to
01:30:4218 which looked like the
01:30:46Pit of finale
01:30:48Well montoya's got he's 2.5 seconds behind jensen now
01:30:52uh for that fifth place
01:30:54With seven laps to go and he's throwing in some fast times
01:31:00Mind you though jensen jensen's responding. Jensen's just putting his his overall best time of the race
01:31:0516.7 that that's not going to notice that's buttons on button four. There you go
01:31:11button on button four
01:31:14Okay
01:31:16Meanwhile, um slo-mo of a very nasty moment there for
01:31:23Kimi rakanen who can't be too pleased with that that but that's that's what we saw
01:31:27Michael doing earlier in the race, isn't it perry? So, you know
01:31:31It's just pushing. He's just pushing hard
01:31:34But um, but montoya's going to want to see a little bit more of that actually
01:31:38Because if we include where he is to raikkonen
01:31:41He's only about 7.1 seconds off
01:31:43I reckon it's funny enough working them though. Just just putting his fastest middle sector time after doing that
01:31:49They've all decided they're going to they're going to make a last ditch attempt to uh, maintain their place or improve their place
01:31:55Montoya could have done without jensen button, uh decided that now's the time to hang on to his sixth place
01:32:01He's raised the game and actually did a quicker lap time than montoya on the previous lap
01:32:06And so the gap stays the same two seconds between montoya and button
01:32:11But button now closing on uh, he's just taking actually don't know how much it just uh delayed him but uh
01:32:19well thrilling battle going through the
01:32:22Grid all the way now, uh, including all the way from third place down to sixth place for the points
01:32:28These guys have been fighting
01:32:30every inch of the way brilliant pit stops by
01:32:36Just saw three laps pop up on the screen now, that's the prediction for when montoya will catch
01:32:42button
01:32:43Yeah, well, I made a prediction on the basis that button was going to carry on doing the lap times
01:32:47He had previously been doing which he didn't he's uh, he magnificently raised his game
01:32:52and
01:32:54Kept that gap at two seconds between himself and montoya
01:32:58Not about to take it sitting down
01:33:00So
01:33:02Is that sato, uh, it must be sato doing
01:33:07Just getting involved in the titanic battle at the front there for a brief moment thankfully not uh, not not too memorably
01:33:20And so it goes on
01:33:22five laps to go ralph
01:33:24not able to
01:33:26Make a significant difference
01:33:28He needs to get a lot closer than that. He needs to start
01:33:31Being all over the back of his brother going into this corner in the last couple of laps if he's going to be in with a
01:33:36shout with
01:33:38Of winning this race meanwhile out of time here and williams who really felt that this track would suit their car suit their engine
01:33:45And their tires are facing the fact that they're being beaten by ferrari and they are not going to be happy about it
01:33:52Of course montoya was a part of the battle on the first lap until it all went wrong and they had that contact
01:33:58It could have been a different story perhaps if montoya had got ahead at that point, but it didn't happen and ralph
01:34:04Despite being fast just can't quite get close enough to the back of that ferrari to find a way through
01:34:10Well, I think I agree with all you say ben
01:34:12But there's one special factor that has got that ferrari in the lead
01:34:15And I don't think there's any other driver in the world right now is capable of doing what michael schumacher
01:34:21He's got tires that are considered to be not as good on this track on the day as the michelin
01:34:25He's got a brand new car, which is probably not quite as powerful as bmw yet
01:34:30There he is dominating this race and leading it two or four laps to go
01:34:34Here's the battle though as we watch jensen button come across the line now running in fifth place and one pablo montoya has him
01:34:42Very much within his sights at 1.2 seconds the gap between them
01:34:46Let's ride on board with montoya watch the gap see if the car
01:34:50We're riding with can close up that little bit more to the renault ahead heading down towards turn four high top speed here
01:34:57Then late late late on the brakes. Oh and somebody's off in the gravel over there. It's right
01:35:03Raikkonen's gone off and look there. He is raikkonen who was running in fourth position
01:35:07He's gone off out of the race now, whether that was his right rear wheel
01:35:11There's something wobbling in that right rear wheel you could see as he went across the gravel
01:35:15It was going this way left to right not going and they're back in the mclaren pits
01:35:20Shock, but I think there's something with that right rear wheel if we get a replay of it
01:35:24We may be able to see something. It certainly did not appear to be moving in a normal fashion
01:35:30well, we'll keep an eye on that, uh, see if we get a replay, but again, it's disappointment for mclaren and
01:35:36Kimi is not going to finish this race that puts of course button up into fourth place now
01:35:41Button into fourth montoya into fifth mikasalo comes up into sixth in a point scoring position
01:35:46Irvine into seventh as we look at the two leaders ralph goes very close in turn 13
01:35:52This time he is you can see visually closer
01:35:55The stopwatch will tell you the same now coming across start finish line 0.6 of a second the last lap
01:36:00The problem is he's not close enough to pick up any aerodynamic draft as he goes into turn one
01:36:04All he is doing is just getting closer, but not close enough. It's the closest he's been across the line at 0.4
01:36:11Second as he came across the line that time now
01:36:13Remember the yellows that you can see at the top of the screen. They are out at the next corner turn four
01:36:19That is where raikkonen went off just a moment ago and the battle between montoya and button just
01:36:261.3 seconds last time around and both drivers are required to go through this segment of the circuit slower than their previous laps
01:36:34Yes, that's right
01:36:35So the uh stewards keeping an eye on that just two laps to go less than two laps to go now
01:36:41For michael schumacher who's trying to bring home his fourth victory here at interlagos
01:36:47And again, look at ralph trying to get that little bit closer. You can see the difference ferrari
01:36:51They were struggling but michael schumacher really struggling as pelle comes out with the flag
01:36:56He's going to wave this flag this race off schumacher struggling ralph picked up time able to hold the car and tighter
01:37:02Through the slower corners and the high speed corners not so much difference
01:37:06Well ralph is definitely running out of time now
01:37:10Because they will just have one lap to do as he comes across the line this time
01:37:15Michael schumacher in the ferrari the new car the car that he pushed so hard
01:37:20That ferrari should bring here to brazil. They didn't want to initially they were going to run the 2001 car michael pushed
01:37:27They've brought it and he's shown them what he can do with it
01:37:29This has been a brilliant drive from michael schumacher and ralph schumacher
01:37:33Just to prove that he's not out of this race even on the last lap was fastest through that third sector
01:37:38That's the most important part of this lap
01:37:40If he's going to get a pass to this ferrari the only part of the track that he can do it on merit will be there
01:37:46Oh filmer pulling off the track. He was running in eighth place and it's all over for jack
01:37:51So close to seeing the chequered flag. That's a great disappointment
01:37:54Into the lowering sun now the vision getting a little harder on that infield section
01:37:59But michael just has to get it through here safely to record another victory the second
01:38:05Time he will have won for ferrari his fourth victory in all including the two wins
01:38:09He drove for benetton here in brazil in the mid 90s
01:38:12And he has shown everybody how to win a motor race today committed throughout the entire 71 laps
01:38:19Pedro de la rosa just ahead of these two
01:38:20But it will not come into play as they come through turn 13 for the final time on a racing lap
01:38:25But there is not sufficient ralph schumacher, there is no way he can do it
01:38:30Michael schumacher is going to win the third round of the formula one world championship here at interlagos in brazil
01:38:37The chequered flag waved by pele from one great sportsman to another michael schumacher takes the victory from ralph
01:38:43But let me tell you the battle on the track still going on between jenson button and juan pablo montoya
01:38:50So we must watch that this is their last lap still but the two brothers
01:38:55Michael schumacher taking the victory just ahead of his younger brother ralph showing him how to do it and ralph's turn
01:39:02May come another day an absolutely outstanding a brilliant victory for ferrari for michael schumacher
01:39:07And look jean-taud. He is delighted. We're still waiting for this battle for fourth place to conclude
01:39:15Button and montoya right in the middle of his slowest part of the circuit
01:39:19If you look back to david coulthard who's in third place and he is not assured
01:39:23Of his first podium of the year his first points of the year his first finish
01:39:27Oh, that was a brilliant job. Michael. Well done. Welcome
01:39:33Actually listening to ross brawn there. Wow, that was a hard piece of work, but
01:39:38It would have been fantastic
01:39:40I really have been fantastic. I mean such an effort for you guys to bring this new car. Yeah, I really went to work on
01:39:47Tell me what happened to ruben this poor guy
01:39:52Uh, we had
01:39:55I don't want to say on the tv. We had a technical problem. It was unfortunate. He would have been competitive today
01:40:02We had a technical problem
01:40:06Well, there we go that is we were so privileged to listen to that conversation
01:40:10Ross brawn and michael schumacher and you could hear the delight in michael's voice there just to confirm button managed to beat montoya
01:40:16Across the line by 0.6 seconds
01:40:18So coulthard third button fourth montoya fifth and mikasalo again getting the toyota into the points in sixth
01:40:25Irvine and de la rosa seventh and eighth ahead of sato
01:40:28Villeneuve classified as 10th with mark weber finishing in 11th. Well an outstanding. I mean just a fantastic drive from michael schumacher
01:40:36I think ross brawns congratulations. Ross does not normally go over the top when he congratulates drivers
01:40:42But he knows this is a drive of the highest quality you will see at any time
01:40:46In the history of formula one under pressure pretty much all the way from his own brother
01:40:50Ralph schumacher push push pushed I believe had the quicker car on the day
01:40:54For this man, what would have happened to that collision into turn four in the first lap?
01:40:59Michael blocked blatantly then went back to the middle of the road
01:41:01But montoya misjudged the braking clipped the back of the ferrari amazingly no damage to the ferrari whatsoever
01:41:08Well an astonishing performance today from michael schumacher and again
01:41:12His finishing record here in brazil continues. He's finished every race. He's run here since 1992
01:41:19On the podium except for one year 1997 and again the delight for toyota huge congratulations another point
01:41:26For toyota in the constructors battle another point for mikasalo in the drivers championship
01:41:31Indeed a superb job from the cologne based team
01:41:34But also a word of encouragement for jaguar because eddie irvine was not that far behind 4.7 seconds of mikasalo
01:41:41Pedro de la russa further back in eighth place and maybe for the fans of jaguar they've turned the corner
01:41:47The points look at michael schumacher's advantage now over his brother ralph and montoya finds himself down in third a full 10 points
01:41:54behind the championship leader jenson button into fourth place in the series ahead of reichanen and david kulfard who at last
01:42:00Gets his name onto the points board eddie irvine with the three points scored in australia
01:42:05Likewise for mark weber heidfeld malaysia. He scored his two points
01:42:09But mikasalo with two sixth places also on two points. Those are the scorers
01:42:14And that's the winner here
01:42:15in brazil
01:42:17And not just a winner here in brazil. He has been a winner all his life and their
01:42:21Brotherly love. I mean that was a great battle between the two brothers
01:42:24But I think on the day it was pretty clear to the world
01:42:28That there was one schumacher who is a world champion a multiple world champion
01:42:32And another schumacher who could be but you know, even with a car which probably on the day was marginally more competitive
01:42:38It was michael
01:42:39He's just I mean what you can't come up. There's not enough superlatives to say how brilliant this man is
01:42:45Yeah, he was able to push all the time throughout the race. That's what won him the race
01:42:50It's a it's a combination of so many things with michael, isn't it? John? It's it's fitness on one stage
01:42:55He's one of the fittest drivers out there. Look at this relationship
01:42:58This is what it's all about ross braun and michael schumacher the two we heard talking on the radio a moment ago
01:43:03And that's the strength of their relationship and that's what's brought so much success to both of them
01:43:10I mean, I think that was a fantastic grand prix. I mean to see two brothers in two competitors let alone two brothers battling like that
01:43:16I mean on the limit really making very very few errors
01:43:20I saw one or two from michael
01:43:21But that just indicated that he was driving more than his maximum probably even more
01:43:26Than the bridgestone tower and the ferrari chassis were capable of yet
01:43:29He still wins the grand prix by half a second the only question mark
01:43:32I guess over that first lap with the michael and montoya that one will be analyzed of course and everyone will have a view on it
01:43:39Michael shutting the door on montoya and they took the front wing off his car
01:43:43But there the final results after 71 laps and the gap just half a second between them
01:43:48But then we talked about and it has been talked about this new ruling if a driver makes a move
01:43:53Which is not satisfactory to the stewards. He could be penalized for the next grand prix
01:43:57We know that they can do something immediately if it is severe enough if it is as marginal as that one was
01:44:03They have got the right to bring in michael schumacher and juan pablo montoya
01:44:07Look at the tapes again speak to both the drivers and if they decide that there was somewhat of an unfair
01:44:12Second move from michael they could in theory penalize him 10 places for the next grand prix
01:44:18Well, that certainly would make life interesting if that happens and they do have that opportunity to review the evidence as you say
01:44:25I'm sure montoya not very happy at all after that incident
01:44:29It certainly looked as though montoya gave michael a bit of room off the grid
01:44:33And I think that he will feel that michael gave him absolutely no room at all as they headed down
01:44:38Towards turn four that he already had a run going and that michael shut the door in but that discussion can continue for the moment
01:44:45You have to say after that michael drove superbly to take the victory here his fourth win
01:44:51In brazil and time for the german national anthem to ring out
01:45:07So
01:45:37So
01:45:39So
01:46:05And now the italian national anthem for ferrari
01:46:09So
01:46:39So
01:46:41So
01:46:43So
01:46:46So
01:46:49So
01:47:09The national anthems played out and the union flag being hoisted to half masters a mark of respect following the passing away of queen elizabeth
01:47:16the queen mother yesterday afternoon
01:47:19The top three on the podium and michael schumacher taking the 10 points and the trophy here at interlagos
01:47:27His brother alongside him and david kulfar coming home in third position great to see that he's finally got some points
01:47:34Yes, it's been a very very difficult start to the season for david, but finally he's on the podium four points
01:47:40And the championship hopes that he said were dashed after malaysia
01:47:43Well, he's still a long way to go. But you know, there are still many more races 14 more in this year 17 race championship
01:47:53Trophy to second place man ralph schumacher. Well, he tried he fought he put in some very quick laps
01:47:59Towards the end of the race he got within four tenths of a second, but he never ever looked
01:48:05Likely to get alongside that ferrari but david kulfar drove hard all afternoon stuck behind
01:48:12Truly in the reno for so long fought past on the pit stops great work from the team as well
01:48:16He'll be delighted with what they did in the pits
01:48:18He did the job on the track and he's earned that third place bad news for truly
01:48:22Of course the jensen button coming home in fourth position and juan pablo montoya in fifth
01:48:29Ross just down there enjoyed you're a bit of a wine buff. So enjoy the the champagne the mum champagne
01:48:35As michael and ralph and ross really enjoy
01:48:38the relationship between these two people
01:48:41You know, they're just it's just unbelievable. You rarely really see partnerships in any sport or a business quite like this one
01:48:48Well, we heard on the radio john when he was talking to ross braun on that slowing down lap
01:48:52He said he said he appreciated the amount of work the team had done
01:48:55He knew how hard they'd had to work to get that 2002 car. He pushed for it to be here
01:49:00And it's all been worthwhile and you could see what we saw just a quick glimpse of jean-taud on the mobile telephone
01:49:06One suspected he might be ringing up luca de montezemolo the president of the ferrari company
01:49:11Just to confirm what luca will have seen on tv and uh, no doubt saying, you know
01:49:15Now we've done one base one race one big three. We need that second car big time for barcelona
01:49:23Yes, that's right next time out and uh
01:49:25david kulfar
01:49:26I think a little sandba shimmy up on the podium there
01:49:28It's great to see a smile on his face at last
01:49:30It's been such an awful start to the season for him and at last a little relief a little happiness
01:49:35For david and perhaps he can now build on this as the teams
01:49:39Come back to europe for the real heart of the grand prix season starting out at imola in two weeks
01:49:44And indeed another racetrack, which you said throughout this weekend's broadcast, which will favor
01:49:49bmw
01:49:51mercedes i mean bmw particularly
01:49:54michelin tires and the williams chassis
01:49:57I hope they've managed to catch that jeroboam of champagne. It might have cracked on the ground
01:50:00I think they did catch it was a pretty good catch actually impressive stuff with a heavy bottle like that
01:50:05But uh, michael just taking a few more moments to celebrate this victory with ferrari
01:50:10What a record he has here
01:50:12And as we said over the last 10 years the winner of this race has normally gone on to win the championship
01:50:17That's bad news for williams the last uh last year
01:50:20It didn't happen though when david kulfar had won the race michael went on to win the championship
01:50:24And it didn't happen back in 1993 and williams will be hoping that they continue that particular trend
01:50:29The characteristic jump onto the top step and then that was a really really tough physical race for both schumachers
01:50:36But michael in particular I feel and he still has the energy the vitality. Okay
01:50:40He's got still pure adrenaline coursing through his veins. But nevertheless the way he's able to spring and jump. I mean, it's
01:50:46It's a real joy to watch something. We're really probably watching history being made michael schumacher
01:50:51The only man with the potential to go on and equal the five world championships of the great argentinian. Juan manuel fangio
01:50:57Probably going to go on and continue winning race after race. I mean, how long can he go on?
01:51:02It's depressing and david kulfar said, you know, please michael go away and retire
01:51:06Give us all a chance to get a bite of a world championship
01:51:10Well today was just a pure example of how hard he can push throughout a race distance
01:51:15And that's how he managed to win the race
01:51:18As we have a quick look down into the pit garage
01:51:22And the drivers are now making their way through to the press conference room
01:51:26In fact, they've already made it there. So let's go over to the press conference and hear from them
01:51:32Congratulations gentlemen a fabulous brazilian grand prix kept us on the edge of our seats right to the final lap
01:51:37Victory to michael schumacher ralph schumacher second place and david kulfard in third place
01:51:43Michael the excitement started right on the run to the first corner between yourself and juan pablo montoya
01:51:48Can you talk us through what happened at the first corner the second one and the third?
01:51:51And did you suffer any damage from being hit by juan pablo going into turn three?
01:51:56uh, first of all, no, obviously, I mean my car was pretty much perfect until
01:52:01Until the end we didn't suffer any any
01:52:04Any little problem
01:52:06Uh, it was an exciting, uh first two corner where I have to say, uh, juan pablo behaved really well. I mean in order
01:52:13I was thinking I could outbrake him in the first corner
01:52:16But he was braking so late that it was clear that he would almost miss the corner
01:52:20so I prepared them for turn two which then worked actually and
01:52:24He just left enough space for both of us to to go through the corner
01:52:29And then I don't actually know what happened in two turn four
01:52:33I moved over to the left to give him free the outside
01:52:36And I didn't feel anything. I just suddenly saw him dropping back. So
01:52:41May you explain me what happened?
01:52:44Now towards the end of the race you had your brother ralph catching up with you
01:52:47How hard did you have to fight it really looked as though you were having to slide around quite a bit just to stay on
01:52:52the circuit
01:52:53No, it wasn't that bad. Honestly
01:52:56it
01:52:57It was sort of uh after the pit stop when when he was behind me
01:53:00I knew it is only one possibility to overtake here, which is into turn one
01:53:05So I made sure that uh into the last corner everything was right and there it looked obviously a little bit tricky because I was
01:53:10Pushing out into that corner
01:53:12Into the rest. I wasn't overdoing it because it is very easy
01:53:15Especially in the infield infield to make a little mistake on the braking. So it was just
01:53:19Trying to roll the car more than than fight compared to the first in
01:53:23um
01:53:24Which still means that I had to push obviously to keep him behind me, but I knew I couldn't go away from him
01:53:29So there wasn't any
01:53:30Need to uh to try to drive away from him just protect myself for non-overtaking and that worked out
01:53:37Well, michael. Congratulations. Thank you
01:53:39Ralph you had a fabulous battle last year in canada with michael
01:53:44This one seemed to be even more intense and though you came out second this time. Did you enjoy it more or less?
01:53:50Certainly I enjoyed it less because i'm second but
01:53:54um
01:53:55First thing wasn't too good. I wasn't too happy
01:53:58With the balance of the car so we changed something on on the pit stop which made it a lot better
01:54:03So I was able to catch michael up
01:54:05Even though I was maybe slightly quicker than he was I was was not able to come close enough to overtake him down the straight
01:54:11So, um, it was an exciting race
01:54:14Do it next time
01:54:16Now at the end of the race, what was the state of your tires because my well
01:54:19I thought michael looked so he's sliding a bit. He's told us that he was in control
01:54:23Did you ever think there might be a chink that that you could go through past michael?
01:54:27Yeah, well, that's why I kept behind him. I mean even michael sometimes, you know breaks a bit later
01:54:32I mean, especially here it's very easy to come offline and to lose a lot
01:54:36So that's what I was waiting for but he didn't do me that favor this time. He just simply, you know was better today
01:54:42Thank you very much ralph
01:54:43David good to see you here. Not only a finish to the race, but a podium finish
01:54:48Yeah, that's that's right. It's been a while since i've been here. I haven't been here in any of the qualifying sessions this year either
01:54:53And uh, yeah, it's great great feeling to be back on the podium. Um
01:54:58Quite a hard race obviously because the uh, the reno's got past me at the start
01:55:02And uh with james and I was able to he made a mistake come out the last corner
01:55:05So I was able to slip stream him
01:55:07But yana was a lot more difficult and it was just a question of being patient for the pit stops
01:55:12You were pushing very hard right the way to the end
01:55:14And in fact in the closing laps your lap speeds were pretty much the same as the two guys to your to your right
01:55:19Does that mean mclaren is really starting to make progress now?
01:55:23Well, I think that our race pace
01:55:25Is is relatively closer than our qualifying pace
01:55:28But that's the sort of classic situation when your car your whole package isn't quite as strong
01:55:32You tend to see the true colors of a car
01:55:34in qualifying and it tends not to be such a big difference in the race, so
01:55:38I felt that we were going to be a little bit closer, but
01:55:40I don't think we're quite there yet. We've got a bit of work to do
01:55:43David, thank you back to you. Michael
01:55:46Everyone said before this weekend that interlagos would be a circuit where we'd see a michelin victory
01:55:51You turn up on your bridgestones you not only win the race, but you do it in the brand new ferrari 2002
01:55:57What chance similar you're going to do the same again?
01:56:00As you have seen, I mean it has been a very tight race. Um
01:56:05We did it certainly imola is another one where it's going to be a difficult one
01:56:09I believe from the experience we had last year, although we have improved. I mean, uh,
01:56:14It wasn't a sort of luck that we won that race. It was
01:56:17Worked hard for because we had the new car here because we had new bridgeton ties here
01:56:22And all together the package made us winning this race today
01:56:25So I believe it doesn't look too bad then for him enough to look from what we saw last year
01:56:30Nevertheless, uh, we look forward to come to imola our home grand prix and hopefully do something good there
01:56:37Thank you, michael
01:56:37Now if michael and ralph would like to speak in their own languages
01:56:41Well as ever michael sort of playing it down a little bit
01:56:44And even getting a smile from his brother ralph
01:56:46I noticed there when when he was sort of playing down how hard he was pushing a little bit in the latter part
01:56:50Even ralph was smiling at him. Yeah, that's for sure. Michael was pushing him
01:56:53He was on the limit and he'd worked out obviously in the team
01:56:57They respect each other and I think that um, you're not going to see any kind of
01:57:01nonsense between those two what I thought was quite funny was when um,
01:57:05michael said um, you know, my car was fine and it was wasn't sliding around and ralph laughed because he
01:57:11Clearly was right behind michael
01:57:12He knows very well that michael was trying
01:57:15As hard as he could and he said it on the radio when he finished the race. That was a hard race
01:57:18um, I I think that michael, uh plays down any kind of weakness and he
01:57:25Builds up any any strength, you know, he's made the point he's coming with a brand new car brand new bridgestone tires
01:57:30Don't think you're gonna uh walk all over us
01:57:34And david, um, I mean he was third obviously
01:57:36He'd like to have been slightly higher up the podium
01:57:38But he's got to be happy with that after the starts of the season so far
01:57:42It's a nice result. But um when you're finishing over 50 seconds behind the leading pair, I think
01:57:47You know you're kind of thinking. Oh dear sure
01:57:50They uh pin the blame on reno having the audacity to be in front of him for a while
01:57:55maybe holding him up a bit but um
01:57:57you know third is
01:57:59the best that they could
