00:00Asset tracing and recovery of corruptly acquired assets, Your Excellency, and unexplained wealth
00:05extinguishes directly the benefit obtained through corrupt activities.
00:09This strategy helps to create necessary deterrence, as envisioned in the United Nations Convention
00:14Against Corruption, which Kenya is the first country to have signed that convention, almost
00:1920 years ago.
00:21Your Excellency, today we are here.
00:23We are gathered to witness the handing over of about 35 titles, measuring approximately
00:2818.71 acres, with a total value of about 5 billion shillings.
00:33Your Excellency, for your information, there are other titles that are in the process and
00:38maybe soon we'll be back here, through your blessing, to have another occasion like this.
00:44In this one, Your Excellency, item number one is property in Kisumu municipality, measuring
00:50about 2 acres, which is about 1.8 acres, belonging to the judiciary.
00:56You can imagine grabbers went to the judiciary to steal their land.
00:59They were very daring, but we managed to recover this piece of land, which is worth 1.4 billion
01:05shillings.
01:06This is part of the property that is housing the Kisumu law court.
01:11Second one, Your Excellency, are three properties in Eldoret town, measuring 3.25 acres, with
01:17approximate value of 1.2 billion, which are in favor of the Cabinet Secretary National
01:22Treasury as a trustee of the National Police Service.
01:26Same grabbers were daring enough to go and grab land belonging to the police, but we
01:32managed to recover this, and these are three pieces of land worth 1.2 billion.
01:37Your Excellency, there is also one property in Kilimani area, measuring almost half an
01:42acre, which is worth 700 million.
01:45This plot, as Nairobians, we know it.
01:47If you know Upper Hill Medical Center, there's an empty plot there which used to be part
01:53of Kenya School of Law.
01:55It was grabbed and we have recovered it.
01:57It's a very prime plot, worth 700 million.
02:00I acknowledge the notable milestones achieved by the EACC in the fight against corruption,
02:06particularly through the recovery of corruptly acquired assets and unexplained wealth.
02:13Such successes play a vital role in deterring corruption by demonstrating that in the end,
02:20corruption is not worth the trouble, as the corrupt ultimately lose everything they have
02:25taken from the people.
02:27I therefore commend the EACC for recovering assets valued at approximately 28 billion
02:34over the last five years, including both cash, movable and immovable assets.
02:41The EACC has also effectively intervened to prevent the loss of public funds amounting
02:47to an estimated 41 billion by deploying various strategies to disrupt corrupt networks.
02:55Additionally, I am encouraged that the EACC is pursuing the forfeiture of unexplained
03:02wealth valued at Kenya shillings 59 billion through ongoing court proceedings against
03:09individuals whose assets and interests significantly exceed their non-legitimate sources of income.
