Merril Hoge joins the Sports Junkies to discuss why he was impressed by Jayden Daniels debut in comparison to the other rookie QBs in week 1.
Transcript
00:00You made some waves talking about Caleb Williams not being special and Drake May getting
00:04Uh getting somebody fired. Um, what's your week one assessment of jayden before we get to the others?
00:12He was the best of all three and i've watched all of my tape. I mean he was the best from this perspective
00:18How he went about processing he was outstanding his accuracy outstanding
00:23Where he really elevated was is a difference from those other guys
00:27That's why he had the advantage going in and transitioning what he can do with his legs
00:32It is really unique and special and I was I loved seeing how he protected himself and was smart when he did use his legs
00:39But the way he processed and worked from the pocket
00:43And his accuracy in which he do that aside from the very first throw of the game, which I know
00:46His very first story about this. I gotta start my career off like this. I know of nobody
00:51That probably started their career off of their first completion minus what 10 yards or 50 starts whatever it was, right
00:57it doesn't end up being a completion, but you know the
01:00When he threw behind the line of scrimmage
01:03yeah, but I mean I he was
01:05I I listen did he miss some throws? Um, did he do rookie stuff?
01:09Yes, but very minimal compared to the other two and that's not shocking. This is what he did at lsu
01:15You would expect that he would handle himself like that because that's the set that's the skill set that he had
01:21Are you that's why you know?
01:22Caleb williams is struggling and it has a long long ways to go
01:27And it's going to be an arduous journey for him, by the way
01:29All right. Can you explain the difference before you get into caleb though? Are you concerned?
01:33that uh
01:35That jayden wasn't able to make the progressions to get rid of or is he just pressured so quickly that you can't even blame
01:40He didn't have a completion beyond 10 yards
01:43Well
01:45I don't think much these other guys had had bigger completions either, you know, that was interesting
01:50I'll answer your question, but i'm going to digress a little bit. There was i'm watching the chargers and i'm like man
01:55There's an emphasis that uh quick, you know throwing the ball quickly getting rid of it. Um
02:02Making completions and moving on and taking your shots, you know, think about it. The hardest completion is
02:07Is a deeper shot, you know now you got to do those little explosive plays are a critical component
02:11And being a complete offense so you got to do that
02:14But that was amazing as I as I got about halfway through the league
02:17I'm like there's a high emphasis on short intermediate quick get rid of the football complete move and then try to find your explosives
02:25You know play and I know he missed the one, you know, um, and I don't
02:31To me that doesn't bother me because he made the right decision. It just wasn't the right throw
02:35Um, but he is accurate enough to make those things and it will eventually happen for him
02:39But I wasn't I would tell you this of all the guys that I watched
02:42Of the three guys that started their rookie day. He was clearly the best
02:46by a wide margin
