Secret service opened fire at suspect in another apparent Trump assassination attempt

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was safe after what the FBI said appeared to be an assassination attempt on Sunday, September 15, while he was golfing on his course in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Law enforcement officials said during an afternoon press conference that the gunman was in some bushes near the property line of the golf course when Secret Service agents, who were clearing holes ahead of where Trump was playing, spotted a rifle barrel in the bushes.

Agents engaged the gunman and fired at least four rounds of ammunition around 1:30 p.m. (1730 GMT). The gunman then dropped his rifle, two backpacks and other items and fled in a black Nissan car. A witness, the sheriff said, saw the gunman and managed to take photos of his car and license plate.

00:00We have somebody in custody right now that is a potential suspect.
00:04We got a little bit more work to do on it.
00:06But as we usually do, as soon as we decide that we're gonna book him into
00:10the county jail, and the charges that he's gonna be booked into,
00:14we'll get those to you, and we'll get a picture of him, and
00:16we'll get you his background.
00:18Former President Donald Trump is safe and
00:21unharmed following a protective incident shortly before 2 PM on Sunday
00:26at Trump International Golf Club at West Palm Beach.
00:31The US Secret Service personnel opened fire on a gunman located near
00:35the property line, and this matter is under investigation.
00:39It was one or two holes behind.
00:42That, cuz the bubble moves through the golf course.
00:46So our agents will get there first, clear it.
00:50He noticed that the rifle was pointed out, our agents engaged.
00:55We are not sure right now if the individual was able to take a shot at our
00:59agents, but for sure, our agents were able to engage with the suspect.
01:05I don't know that.
01:08Doug, up here, sir.
01:09How far away was the President, how far away was Donald Trump
01:13when this gentleman was caught and stopped?
01:19Probably between 300 and 500 yards.
01:22But with a rifle and a scope like that, that's not a long distance.
01:29Well, you gotta understand the golf course is surrounded by shrubbery.
01:32So when somebody gets into the shrubbery, they're pretty much out of sight, right?
01:37And at this level that he is at right now, he's not the sitting president.
01:41If he was, we would have had this entire golf course around him.
01:45But because he's not,
01:46the security is limited to the areas that the Secret Service deems possible.
01:51So I would imagine that the next time he comes at a golf course,
01:55there'll probably be a little bit more people around the perimeter.
01:58But the Secret Service did exactly what they should have done.
02:02They provided exactly what the protection should have been, and
02:05their agent did a fantastic job.
02:06Which direction was the shrubbery?
02:09Was it north, south, east, west, or south of the road?
02:15The layout of the golf course, you've got three holes, five, six, and seven, all
02:19right, one of them runs parallel to Summit Boulevard,
02:22one of them runs parallel to Congress.
02:24And he was in an area in the shrubbery where he could see both holes.
02:29So the president was another hole back,
02:32which means he's about between 400 and 500 yards away.
02:35So he was on the golf course?
02:37He's on the golf course, yeah, but he's back a ways.
02:40The threat level is high.
02:43We have increased the amount of assets that we've supported.
02:47So we live in danger time, so yes.
02:52The FBI has assumed the role as the lead federal law enforcement agency
02:57in the investigation of the incident that occurred earlier today at
03:01Trump International Golf Course here in West Palm Beach, Florida.
03:07We've deployed a number of resources, including the investigative teams,
03:11crisis response team members, bomb technicians,
03:16and evidence response team members as well.
03:20What we need right now is for
03:21the public to avoid the area around the golf course.
03:25Our prosecutors are currently working up warrants and
03:29a motion for pretrial detention for the suspect.
03:33In that way, he will be kept in custody.
03:35But our filing of these warrants and
03:37charges at the state level does not preclude federal charge that could be coming.
03:42But in the meantime, it looks like the warrants and
03:47the pretrial detention motion will happen first.
