Biden says IS will find no safe harbor in US
US President Joe Biden says on Jan. 2, 2025 he learned from intelligence meetings that the US Army veteran who drove a truck into a crowd of New Year's Day revelers had pledged allegiance to Islamic State, but acted alone in the attack that killed at least 14 people. The suspect, who the FBI said was shot dead at the scene after firing at police, has been identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old Texan who once served in Afghanistan. He drove from Houston to New Orleans on Dec. 31, 2024 and posted five videos on Facebook between 1:29 a.m. and 3:02 a.m. on the morning of the attack in which he said he supported IS, the Islamic militant group with fighters in Iraq and Syria, the FBI said. Biden said The FBI said there appeared to be no link between the attack in New Orleans and the incident in Las Vegas on the same day in which a Tesla Cybertruck packed with gasoline canisters and large firework mortars exploded in flames outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, just weeks before President-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House on Jan. 20.

00:00I want to give an update on the investigations in yesterday's terrorist attacks in New Orleans
00:10and the truck explosion in Las Vegas.
00:12I've just come from the meeting not just to spend, while we prepare these remarks, a better
00:18part of an hour, from my Homeland Security team.
00:22The number of people killed in New Orleans has risen to 15, including the attacker.
00:27Thirty-five people were injured.
00:28Today the FBI briefed me that, as of now, no information, we have no information that
00:34anyone else is involved in the attack.
00:37They've established that the attacker was the same person who planted the explosives
00:41in those ice coolers in two nearby locations in the French Quarter just a few hours before
00:48he rammed into the crowd with his vehicle.
00:51They assess he had a remote detonator in his vehicle to set off those two ice chests.
00:58So there's no question that, remember all the talk about other people were involved,
01:02places, they have him, they have established he's there, and even established that he had
01:08a detonator to explode those ice chests.
01:12We'll be proud of these women and men that have been appointed.
01:15I think we're going to re-establish the safeguards.
01:18As I said yesterday, the attacker posted several videos just several hours before the attack
01:24indicating his strong support for ISIS.
01:28Federal law enforcement and the intelligence community are actively investigating any foreign
01:32or domestic contacts or connections that could possibly be relevant to the attack.
01:38And so we're also continuing to investigate whether or not there's any connection between
01:41the New Orleans attack and the explosion in Las Vegas.
01:45As of now, as of now, they've just been briefed, they have not found any evidence of such a
01:51connection thus far.
01:53I've directed them to keep looking.
01:55The individual who ran at the truck to explode that exploded in Las Vegas also served as
01:59active duty U.S. Army.
02:02And the FBI is working with the Department of Defense on investigating including the
02:06service members' possible motives and all those he worked with in who served with him
02:11with things he'd say and do.
02:13I directed my team to accelerate these investigations so we have answers to our unanswered questions
02:19and making every single resource available to get the job done.
02:22And we're going to share the facts as soon as I learn them so the American public doesn't
02:26have to wonder.
02:27In the meantime, like I said last night, New Orleans is a city of tremendous spirit.
02:32You can't keep it down.
02:34You really can't.
02:36And we're seeing that today.
02:37The sugar bowl is back on.
02:40Kickoff is going to take off very shortly.
02:42If I don't get this damn thing done, we're going to be in real trouble.
02:44And the FBI is handing control of Bourbon Street back to local officials.
02:52Security in the area has been reinforced.
02:54And it should be over for business later today, Bourbon Street.
02:58People in New Orleans are sending an unmistakable message.
03:01They will not let this attack or the attackers' deluded ideology overcome us.
03:07None of us should fear that it will overcome us.
03:10We're going to continue to relentlessly pursue ISIS and other terrorist organizations where
03:14they are.
03:15And they'll find no safe harbor here.
03:17I'll continue to provide updates in New Orleans and Las Vegas as the facts develop.
