00:00Oh baby. Oh baby. What a stinker in Minnesota. The longest touchdown of 49ers ever given up
00:06in franchise history. Unbelievable. Unbelievable. After not getting a touchdown on fourth and goal
00:12from the two yard line, they run a cover zero blitz. Purdy, not a clean pocket. Free rusher.
00:18They knew it was a free rusher coming. He pats it down. Was it Van Kinkle? And then the next
00:22couple of plays later, Platt should pass. And it's the play we'll break down with Baldy tomorrow
00:27and the play we'll break down today. 8, 8, 8, 9, 5, 7, 9, 5, 7, 0 because the Niners lost
00:32in every facet of the game. Special teams, offense, defense, coaching, you name it.
00:37Minnesota was the better team by far and away. The Niners were lucky to be in that football
00:41game in the fourth quarter. But that 97 yard touchdown pass from Sam Darnold to Justin
00:46Jefferson. Clean pocket. Steps up. And George Odom is at the line of scrimmage pressing
00:53Justin Jefferson. Tig Brown is over the top. Got us. Got caught looking at the backfield
00:58on the play action pass because Minnesota was being effective early on in running the football.
01:03And boy, oh boy, oh boy. Justin Jefferson did the rest. It smoked Odom and Tig Brown.
01:09That's kind of a microcosm of what went down yesterday. I thought a big field goal before
01:13I had time for Minnesota. Party wasn't all the way on this game. We wanted to,
01:17even though he threw for 300 yards, he wasn't on his game. Flores had a hell of a game plan.
01:22Shed a head, got out coach yesterday. So Shasky is a lot to dissect here.
01:25It's not doom and gloom. It's week two. They're one and one. But after the news of
01:29Christian McCaffrey being out for at least four weeks and folks, I got news for you.
01:34I don't think it's going to be four weeks. People are filling detention right now with
01:40the 49ers coming off of that training camp. Okay. So obviously this is not the end of the world,
01:45but that was a, that was a crummy loss. Like it just is. It's a crummy loss.
01:50Here's my biggest takeaway. And I want to get into all of it. Like there's so many elements
01:55to this game. Does my coach understand clock management? Does my coach understand that like
02:01at the end of a game in the fourth quarter, there are only so many scenarios that can play itself
02:06out. Right. So like, obviously what happened in the Superbowl is going to hang over him forever.
02:11Right. It's just, there's just no other way around it. But I swear to God, I wanted someone
02:16to ask him the whole, like the sequencing in the fourth quarter, how does a 12 year old playing
02:22Madden understand when to go for two? How does a 12 year old playing Madden understand that a five
02:28yard delay of game penalty in the third quarter is not worth burning a timeout for. All right.
02:33When you literally completed a pass on second and 17 to place prior, how do they not understand
02:40this last year, McVay burn more timeouts in the third quarter than anybody in the NFL.
02:45And he hires himself a clock management guru. Shanahan needs to do the same. I don't know
02:50what they were doing that the final drive, you're down multiple scores. So even if you get a
02:56touchdown, you need, you're fighting the clock. Okay. You're fighting the clock. Like we can talk
03:01about getting out, hit out schemes. Like I have all that, but like, to me, do you understand the
03:05clock? I'm watching Ibraflux in the Sunday night football game. He understood. I have one time
03:09out left. I need to score a field goal here to be able to stop the other team and get the book,
03:14give myself a chance to get the ball back, to give me an opportunity when you're down
03:19multiple scores and you have zero timeouts. Okay. The only other time out left when it's over the
03:25two minute warning is that two minutes stoppage. And instead of kicking a field goal after the
03:30Sobert play over the middle, okay. They decide to run up to the line and they're going to score
03:34a touchdown. And then coming out of the two minute break, you throw a backwards pass to Debo.
03:39The results are irrelevant to me. What tells me there, do you understand clock management?
03:45That was my biggest takeaway from yesterday. Like you're allowed to have a stinker of a game. You're
03:49allowed to turn the ball over. You're allowed to muffle pun. You're allowed to, I don't know why,
03:54but you're allowed to not get stops on third down. You're allowed to let Sam Donald have a monster
04:00game and just to Jefferson, to have one of those iconic moments. What you're not allowed to do
04:04is not understand clock management and possession. And to me, that's the number
04:09one takeaway from this game. Kyle, do you understand when you're down multiple scores
04:14clock is your enemy? Well, I don't know if that's my number one takeaway. It's a problem,
04:19no doubt about it, but it's not my personal number one takeaway. My number one takeaway is third down
04:25and they're struggling right now to get off the field on third down. And yesterday third down,
04:29they were unable to stay on the field by converting third downs. There were two or 10
04:34on third down, which, you know, despite owning the time, uh, type of possession for the second
04:39week in a row, they had over 34 minutes of type of possession. There were two or 10 on third down.
04:44So not extending drives, not converting on critical downs. One of three, I'll fourth down
04:49your one to three, I'll fourth down your two and 10 on third down. And you give up seven third
04:53down conversions. That to me is not good enough, especially on the final drive where Minnesota is
04:58up 20 to 14 and they burned over six minutes of type of possession, six minutes and 46 seconds
05:04off a drive by converting on multiple third downs. I look at the third down before halftime 13,
05:11you're up, you're down 10 to seven. Donald hits Jefferson. They get a first down on third at 13.
05:17It sets up a field goal that looms large at the end of the game. It looms large. Those extra three
05:23points make it a two position, a possession game. So, you know, you got out schemed.
05:29Flores has something on shenanigan and Purdy. He disguised so much stuff to the point where
05:33pretty after the game was like, Hey dude, your scheme is crazy. I was crazy. Like that was crazy,
05:38but pretty was befuddled at times yesterday. And in the past game on third down Jordan,
05:44basic rate. Great. Great. No problem with the back to back hundred yard days,
05:49but the McCaffrey lost in the past game. Now you don't have that ready back to throw two out of
05:55the backfield. That's, that's going to loom large here over the next month or two.
05:59I don't know if you saw any like breakdowns after the game on the different networks, but
06:03I was listening to the various conversations about like, what, what exactly did Brian Flores
06:08do? Cause we're watching like the telecast feed and like, you know, the NFL network and stuff,
06:12they have access to some of the different angles that we don't get a chance to see.
06:16And they're like, look, you got to understand that when you have CMC in the backfield as a
06:20checkdown option, you're forced to run more zone than you would like. And when you can man up
06:25across the board and then drop your safeties deep, now you can have six, seven, sometimes eight.
06:31They did one time guys that are dropping back. And so you have man to man and various zones.
06:36You're not worried about the check down going for 15 yards, going for seven, eight yards when it's
06:41just a two and three yard checkdown. So it just changes the back end of that coverage. Well,
06:46last year, when you ran zone, I had 18 yards to catch, right? Debo Samuel was, was, was eaten.
06:52George Kittle was eaten. And we know that Brock Purdy will dice up your windows in zone yesterday.
06:58How many different times did you see a linebacker sprinting over the middle? Now that guy is being
07:03defended by one guy and here comes the zone defender or the other guy sprinting over to
07:09bat that ball that they wanted to throw in the middle of the field. You saw it on Debo juice.
07:13You saw it on the interception pass. Like they were kind of lucky. There weren't more
07:17interceptions in that game. And I actually thought Purdy played a pretty decent game
07:21given that he was lit up six times for sacks. Yeah, he got, he got sacked six times yesterday.
07:25I don't think Trent Williams had a great game yesterday. He got called for a whole day. He
07:29wasn't as sharp and that's to be expected after he missed all of camp. Although last week he didn't
07:34give up the pressure on Monday night football. I don't think he was as sharp yesterday. This,
07:39who's this kid, uh, uh, for the Minnesota Vikings. No Blake Cashman. Oh, 13 tackles,
07:45three passes defense to sack. He was everywhere for Bly Forrest Cashman. It's like, man, he's
07:51making some cash today. Sitting literally against the 49ers going sideline to sideline. He was
07:56everywhere. But to your point about, you know, I thought the loss of McCaffrey in the past game
08:01was really looming because all of a sudden the screen game's not there. You can't run your
08:05typical screens. You're not affected by the screen. So Minnesota's like, Hey, they're not
08:09going to run it. He ran a couple of tight end screens in George Kittle, but not the
08:12Tristan McCaffrey at all. So it, in the deep shots, can I get a deep shot or two?
08:16I feel like he got the shirts and defense at various times in a football game to let them
08:22know. Now, I don't know if the deep routes were evolved. I don't know if they were dialed up or
08:25whatnot, but not too many deep shit. Not one deep shot over like 30 yards yesterday. She asked me,
08:30just give me a Bob to try to test the defense here. Maybe you didn't have the time to do
08:35it. I'm not sure. I didn't look great. Um, I saw the first play of the game. If you go back and
08:41look at the first play of the game, are you getting off the light of scrimmage? I know
08:44about it all over the place here, but I used the lightest scrimmage. Yeah. Just got bumped out of
08:48the route. I was like, wow. I mean, just bumped out of the route. It was like, Whoa, what's going
08:55on here? Where's his, I'm not trying to dissect it. Like, but where was the normal energy that
09:01you see from him after he makes a play? Like last year he'd make a play and there was a swagger.
09:06There was a confidence. I'm not here to say that like the guy doesn't want to play on a team that
09:10that's way too far of an angle, but like sums up. And then he catches that pass on second and 17,
09:15before they burn that time out, he makes a big time catch. I'm like, wow. After the first drive,
09:20you didn't see anything for my, for almost two full quarters. And then he makes a big catch and
09:24then he jogs off the field. He's jogging off the field. What? Like guys, we're down here. We can
09:31ill afford to have IU walking off the field as Kittle is being announced. Kittle is on a cart,
09:36getting an IV. Like what, what are we doing? Something's going on with the IU thing. And to
09:41me, he's not ready yet. He's not ready yet. He's not into that. And we knew that was baked into the,
09:47to the equation. So I don't remember what Bob, so five, what else says one Bob to debunk on the
09:53sideline. Okay. But I just thought Minnesota was just a better team. At the end of the day,
09:58they were outfit. They out physical to 49ers. They all hit the 49ers. They outcoached the
10:0249ers. They out scheme, the 49ers. And you know what? Sam Darnold made himself some money
10:07yesterday. He's going to be a free agent after the season. And a lot of people laugh to Sam
10:11Darnold, but with Justin Jefferson and they didn't have Jordan Addison, God forbid they had
10:15Jordan Addison yesterday. Minnesota just has the 49ers number up in that stadium. They haven't
10:20went there since 1992. And for whatever reason, the diners can't get stops on third down right
10:25now. And that's, that's the other question. We're going to have a conversation about Nick
10:29Sorensen at third down soon. They got to figure out third downs. I mean, I it's 49 degrees.
10:36Just, I know we talked a lot about Steve books last year to cover zero blitz at the end of the
10:40first half. That's bad. That's bad, bad. It probably cost him his job, but to have George
10:45Odom impressed man against Justin Jefferson down at the goal line and you get no pressure
10:52and to help his Tig Brown. So they got George Odom and Tig Brown trying to guard the best
10:56white receiver in football. That's a joke with that needs to be examined with your number one
11:01cornerback in post game being asked by a, is it Matt Lively from, from a KPI X he's asked him,
11:08like, Hey, well, you know what, what's going on? You know, the ball's not getting thrown your way
11:11a lot. Charveria Schwartz says, well, you know, I like to play exclusively against the number one
11:16receiver of the other team. He's already calling out the DC. What, what B the throw of the game.
11:24Everyone's going to look at the Justin Jefferson bomb. And that was a beautiful throw. The amount
11:27of times Donald climbed in the pocket and made great throws was, was bountiful. I mean, it was
11:32many of them. This was the throw of the game. It's third and eight. They're on like fringe field
11:38goal zone. Okay. It's not a guarantee that they hit it, but they're probably going to. And if you
11:42get a stop there and they get a field goal, you've got time because again, you still had your two
11:47timeouts because you burned one in the third quarter and Donald throws a 27 yards strike
11:52over Yadim shoulder. And it was right to Naylor. It was a perfect 26 yards, 26 yards. It was a
11:59perfect, perfect throw. And right there, they get to kind of basically rage. And then he has another
12:06third down to get them right into the goal line, which soaks up another three or four minutes or
12:11whatever, two or three minutes. But to me, those were the plays for Sam Donald. You referenced his
12:16run earlier. Yeah. What are we doing? I don't even know what the coverage was on the backend
12:23on that. It was just, well, it was three guys over there. It looked like they were in the zone.
12:27I'm not sure what the hell was going on in that play, but three guys around there. Donald just
12:30throws a dime down the seam to Naylor third date at the 46 yard line. So they run six minutes for
12:3646 seconds off the clock. Remember they received the kickoff when the Niners cut it to 20 to 14.
12:41They received a cutoff. Not as a conversation, whether or not you go for two, you go for two,
12:45because you limit them to a field goal. All of a sudden you're down 2315 instead of 2314. So the,
12:52the situation in the math, it's just not mapping right now for this 49ers coaching staff. It calls
12:58shit ahead, but the Vikings received the ball with 10 minutes to 16 seconds left. By the time the
13:02Niners got the ball back, there was three 30 left. It was a great drive by them. And credit to
13:07Minnesota Vikings. They were running the ball all game. If it weren't for this, by the way, it's
13:11taken 20 minutes. If it wasn't for multiple miraculous Fred Warner plays, they lose by
13:18multiple touchdowns going away. Let's just call it what it is. Fred had a red zone interception
13:23on a beautiful, I mean, he was diving, twisting, going back. And then Fred punches the ball out
13:28from Aaron Jones on a perfectly dialed up screen pass while they were blitzing the
13:34almond or on the opposite end. I thought Kevin O'Connell was in his bag. How about the third
13:39and eight or third and nine play where he runs the rub route and, and freeze up a wide open guy.
13:45And the DBS are not paying attention. They get the turnover. Okay. On Brock Purdy. What's the
13:50first play? Let's do the fake. We're going to have the wide receiver come inside the tight end
13:54and then slip out for a wide open touchdown. You can dial up seven or eight specific plays
14:00from this one where Kevin O'Connell was light years ahead of the 49er coaches.
14:05Yeah, no, he was really good. He was really good yesterday. Sam Darnold had this pass rush, man.
14:10I know both ended up with two sacks, but it's not enough. And you know,
14:14Ty Chandler ran hard for the Vikings yesterday over 80 yards. The fact that they're running
14:18so much at Nick Bosa as a defensive end, that, that that's alarming. I mean,
14:23opponents are way too comfortable running at number 97 and you're right.
14:28Frank Warner made hall of fame level plays. He doesn't get the interception. Minnesota
14:32goes up 17, nothing. He doesn't force the football. Minnesota, Minnesota goes up 27 and seven.
14:38So he made hall of fame type plays all the fame type. I mean, Frank, we're just playing
14:42out of his mind, but he has to right now, but it's a pass rush is inconsistent.
14:46I didn't hear Leonard Floyd's name at all yesterday. Not once. Maybe you had to do some
14:51more blitzing. The scheme of the back end looks a little suspect right now. So we're learning right
14:56now. We're learning about Nick Sorensen and he's on the clock. He's on the clock to figure this out,
15:01but shed a head, shed a head. That's that may be one of this worst games coach in the last five
15:07years. So there's 10 minutes to go. You score a touchdown. I want to examine this for just one
15:12second. There's 10 minutes to go. How many possessions do you think are left in that game?
15:16Oh, it's probably two to three. Yeah. Okay. So you score the touchdown. It's 20 to 13. Okay.
15:26You have the opportunity to kick an extra point. Now, if you kick the extra point there and they
15:31score a field goal, all right, now they're up nine points. That's two scores. So if you miss,
15:39if you miss the extra point, just hear me out. If you miss the extra point or you miss the two
15:43point conversion, it's 20 to 13. If they kick a field goal, they're up 10. It's still two scores.
15:49Either way. If you go for the two points right then in there, it's 20 to 13. You get the two,
15:56it's a five point game. And if they score a field goal, it's an eight point game,
16:00which means it's a touchdown and a two point conversion away. How this is on a laminated.
