00:00Hello, and welcome to Common Core for Kids Nightly News.
00:10Tonight we have a very special report on someone amazing.
00:15That would be me, of course, the number one.
00:18Let's take a look at the news story that happened to me today.
00:21Today, I really need your help with learning some basic fractions.
00:26I have these shapes that my friends and I wanted to play with, but we had a problem.
00:31Every time I divided the shape to share it, one of us got mad, because we did not get
00:35as much as the others did, and it did not seem fair.
00:39This is why we are learning about fractions today, so I can know how to make it fair for
00:43everyone.
00:46Here is a circle, and there are three of us who want to share the circle.
00:50So I broke off two pieces and gave them to my friends.
00:55They did not think that was fair.
00:57What do you think?
01:00Do we each have even pieces of the circle?
01:04We do not, and that is something important about fractions.
01:08To be a fraction, you have to have equal pieces.
01:11Right now, we do not have equal pieces, so this cannot be a fraction.
01:15Let's try this again with another circle.
01:19Alright, here we have another circle, and I am going to divide this whole circle into
01:24three pieces.
01:27Now we have three pieces, and guess what, they are all equal, which means all three
01:32of us get the same amount of the circle.
01:34This is really cool stuff.
01:36I did not know I liked fractions this much.
01:40A fraction represents a part of a whole.
01:44The green part of the circle is mine to play with.
01:48I have one of three parts of the circle.
01:51We call this a third.
01:54I have one third of the whole circle.
01:59When we write fractions, they look like this.
02:02We have a number with a line in the middle, and another number underneath.
02:06The number on the bottom always shows all the parts of the whole circle.
02:12In this case, we have three parts that make up the whole circle, so we have a three on
02:16the bottom.
02:18Now on the top, we have the number one.
02:20If you look at the third of the circle that is colored green, you will see that there
02:24is just one part.
02:26This is my part of the circle.
02:28The number one on top represents my part of the circle.
02:32I have one third of the whole circle.
02:36Okay, my friends went home and gave me back their parts of the circle.
02:41Now I have all the parts of the circle.
02:43I have what we call three thirds of the circle.
02:48I have three parts over the total, which is three parts, which means I have three thirds.
02:55This also means I have the whole circle all to myself, because I am not sharing any pieces,
03:01so the three thirds that I have are mine right now.
03:06Now I have a rectangle, and it is just one piece.
03:10Oops, it looks like I have more than one piece now.
03:13I have two pieces, and they are equal to each other, so we have a fraction.
03:18I have two pieces which make a whole.
03:21One of these pieces makes up half of the whole shape.
03:24Together, I have two halves of the whole shape.
03:28That is awesome!
03:32Here is another circle, and I divided this circle into four separate parts.
03:38Right now, I have four pieces over four pieces.
03:43We call these four fourths.
03:46There are one, two, three, four pieces, which gives us four fourths, but...
03:52Hey, I want one!
03:54Me too!
03:56Me three!
03:59I have three sisters that want a piece of the circle.
04:04I have one fourth of the circle, but can you tell me how many fourths of the circle my
04:08sisters have?
04:13They have three fourths of the circle.
04:16These fractions are easier than I thought.
04:18Thank you so much for helping me today.
04:20Now I better give the three fourths to my sisters, or there will be trouble.
04:24Goodbye!
