00:00So, as we mentioned, today we are going to learn about subtraction.

00:11Yeah, you know I'm waiting patiently in this waiting room.

00:27Yeah, they can be fun, but you do have to be patient, and it's a good time to think.
00:32You know, you can think about all kinds of things.
00:36Like, okay, I have eight cowboy hats.
00:40I know, it's crazy, it's weird. Eight cowboy hats, and they're all the exact same.
00:46The exact same hat. I've got eight of them.
00:50Eight brown cowboy hats.
00:54I mean, what's a guy going to do with eight brown cowboy hats that look the exact same?
01:01What could I possibly do with eight brown cowboy hats that are all the same?
01:07I mean, I should probably give some of them away.
01:12You know, I could give away one of my hats to Bob.
01:15And Cookie might want one. Yeah, she might like a brown cowboy hat, you know.
01:21I could give one to Nancy, you know, just in case she ever got invited to a western party.
01:25And Chomsky, he'd take a hat.
01:29So, as I'm sitting here thinking about my eight hats,
01:33I need to figure out how many hats I'll have left if I give some of them away.
01:40To figure that out, we need to use subtraction.
01:44You see, subtraction is when you take numbers away.
01:48Yeah, very simple. Subtraction is when you take numbers away.
01:54So, I begin with eight hats, and I decide to give one away.
02:00We're going to need to subtract one from eight.
02:04The way we would write this is eight minus one.
02:10Now remember, when we subtract, we're just taking numbers away.
02:15So, eight minus one, we're going to just take one away.
02:20There we go. How many hats do I have left?
02:23What is eight minus one?
02:26If it helps, you can just count how many hats I have left.

02:36Yeah, seven. Eight minus one is seven.
02:41Now I have seven hats.
02:45Remember, subtraction is when you take numbers away.
02:51And, as you might have noticed, we use the minus sign when we write a subtraction problem.
02:57You can see it right there in the middle.
02:59It's just like a dash. That's the minus sign.
03:04So now I have seven hats, but two of my friends stop by,
03:08and I decide, you know what, I know I just have seven hats now,
03:11but I want to give two of them away.
03:15Now, I'm going to be subtracting two hats from my collection.
03:20We would write this by saying seven minus two.
03:27Now let's take away two hats. We'll find out how many we have left.

04:46So, five minus three, how many hats are left?

06:15So we subtract that one, we take that one away,
06:19and how many hats are left?

06:29Yep, two minus one equals one.
06:34There's only one hat left.
06:36Which is fine, I mean, you know,
06:38I can only wear one hat at a time,
06:40and it was the same exact hat.
06:43I think about it, subtraction's been good to me.
