00:00Hi kids, in the last lessons we learned what are fractions, like fractions, unlike fractions,
00:13proper fractions, improper fractions, and unit fractions.
00:22Today we will learn comparing like fractions, so let's get started.
00:29There are some like fractions, that is fractions with the same denominators.
00:37How will you compare them or tell which fraction is bigger and which one is smaller?
00:45We can do it visually, like this.
00:50First draw the fractions 1 by 8.
00:56We know 1 by 8 means 1 part out of 8 equal parts, so we can draw it like this.
01:062 by 8 means 2 parts out of 8 parts, so we can draw it like this.
01:17Similarly we can draw all the like fractions.
01:23Now if I ask you which of the fractions is largest, you can visually judge and reply
01:32that 7 by 8 is the largest fraction.
01:38And if I ask you which of the fractions is smallest, you can visually judge and reply
01:46that 1 by 8 is the smallest fraction.
01:52So this was the visual method of comparing like fractions.
01:58Now we will be learning another method of comparing like fractions.
02:06From the visual method of comparing like fractions, we saw that smaller the numerator, the smaller
02:14the fraction.
02:16So the other way of comparing fractions is to just compare the numerators.
02:23And the smaller the numerator, the smaller the fraction.
02:28Now let's see some examples.
02:322 by 4 is bigger or smaller than 3 by 4.
02:39We have learned when we have to compare like fractions, we will compare the numerators.
02:47And here 2 is smaller than 3.
02:52So 2 by 4 is smaller than 3 by 4.
02:59You can verify your answer by visually drawing the fractions.
03:043 by 4 means 3 parts out of 4 parts.
03:10And 2 by 4 means 2 parts out of 4 parts.
03:17Here you can visually verify that 3 by 4 is a bigger fraction than 2 by 4.
03:26Good!
03:28Let's take another example.
03:324 by 6 is bigger or smaller than 2 by 6.
03:38We know we have to just compare the numerators as they are like fractions.
03:46That is, their denominators are the same.
03:51Here 2 is less than 4.
03:54So 2 by 6 is less than 4 by 6.
04:00You can verify your answer by visually drawing the fractions.
04:074 by 6 means 4 parts out of 6 equal parts.
04:132 by 6 means 2 parts out of 6 equal parts.
04:20So we can visually see that 4 by 6 is a bigger fraction than 2 by 6.
04:28Good!
04:30So what have we learned?
04:32We have learned that to compare the like fractions, we have to compare their numerators.
04:40The smaller the numerator, the smaller the fraction.
04:44Now you may go ahead and take a quiz to learn more.
04:48Bye-bye!
