00:00I mean, I don't want to call it the panic meter because I don't know that anybody like
00:05you're one and one.
00:06But if you're just joining us, obviously, you know, Christian McCaffrey's on IR.
00:11Now Debo Samuel is going to miss at least the next two weeks with a calf strain.
00:15So how worried are you?
00:17Eight, eight, eight, nine, five, seven, nine, five, 70.
00:21How worried are you?
00:23We also asked and there's a Twitter poll up with two weeks of no Christian and no Debo.
00:29Do you think Brock Purdy will flounder or flourish?
00:33And right now, and we're still in the early stages of voting dibs, the nascent stages.
00:38Yeah.
00:39Yeah.
00:40But but right now it's at a 60 40 clip in favor of flourish over flounder, which was
00:46both of our answers as well.
00:47Yeah.
00:48And I honestly, the things that are in place that help Brock Purdy be good are still mostly
00:54in place.
00:56You still have a good running attack.
00:58Jordan Mason is number one in the league in rush attempts right now.
01:02He's got 48 attempts.
01:03No one has more than that, which shows me that at least you're committed to running
01:07the ball.
01:08What, Mark?
01:09What's so funny?
01:10I'm laughing because you actually came in here today and you're a little hot at the
01:14idea of and I'll leave names out of it, but but others saying, why did you not give the
01:20ball to Jordan Mason more?
01:22Right.
01:23And he's leading the league in carries.
01:26And this is where.
01:27So just that stat, I didn't know that.
01:29That made me laugh.
01:30I just looked at it earlier.
01:31He's got 48.
01:32And Josh Jacobs, shout out my fantasy team.
01:35He's got 48.
01:36Raymond Ray Stevenson, who we'll see in a couple of weeks, 46.
01:41And yeah, nobody else is even close.
01:43Saquon's got 24.
01:45So if he gets 25 tonight, he'll be the leader in the NFL in total carries from scrimmage.
01:51So my point is, if you're Brock Purdy and you're wondering about flounder or flourish
01:56Shanahan in the laminated play sheet intact, Kittle still there, Trent Williams still
02:02there.
02:03Dominic Pooney still there.
02:04Brandon Iuke hopefully rounding into shape.
02:07I mean, if what you're saying is the team as a whole does not get a built in excuse
02:13on this, you're right.
02:16And Brock Purdy doesn't get a built in.
02:18Nobody does.
02:19That's my point.
02:20Like this is part of the deal.
02:22You don't you hope it's not this big of a name.
02:24You hope it's not.
02:25I are.
02:26You hope it's not this early in the season, but it is.
02:29You're going to have to play some games without your people.
02:33You know, the Packers went out there without the quarterback yesterday, won a football
02:36game.
02:37You know what I mean?
02:38The Rams, who you're going to see this weekend, like they're they're licking their wounds
02:42to.
02:43Nobody's going to.
02:44Oh boy, the Niners are banged up.
02:45Well, the Rams literally have lost the two people everybody cares about long term.
02:52They're not missing a couple of weeks.
02:53They're missing a truckload of weeks.
02:55Pooka's on I.R. and did McVay do the I.R. thing?
02:58We're considering I.R.
02:59Didn't he do that?
03:00He said it's a consideration that he's going on I.R.
03:04Like Jordan Love was questionable yesterday at about 9 a.m.
03:08Downgraded him to doubtful before the game.
03:10Of course, they downgraded it down.
03:11He wasn't playing.
03:13Anybody raise your hand in the room or in the audience.
03:16If you thought Debo Samuel was going to play 17 games this year.
03:20Oh, nobody.
03:21Now, I just hope it wouldn't be.
03:22Raise your hand if you thought that he would play 15 games.
03:26That's my hope.
03:27That's always my baseline for him.
03:29For me, it's two.
03:30Right.
03:31Like I figure I'm going to give you two.
03:33You're going to miss two.
03:34An easy two.
03:35For sure.
03:36And we've already got them.
03:37Well, the fact that it's the same two, at least, that McCaffrey is missing, that is
03:42unfortunate.
03:43But again, you've talked about it before as it pertains to when Brock Purdy gets those
03:47millions, Brocksters millions.
03:51I love that.
03:52I look forward to seeing where the number goes.
03:53We've got about a half hour.
03:54You would hope that you could draft well enough around him to mitigate the fact that he's
03:59going to make so much money that you might lose some of these guys.
04:01And well, it turns out you're going to have to find some help earlier than you thought
04:07with either Cowing or Conley or Garendo or Saubert or whoever it's going to be.
04:15Ronnie Bell.
04:16Some of these guys are going to have to now step up.
04:18And Jawan Jennings is probably going to be your starting wide receiver in the Devo spot.
04:22And you're going to have to find a way to make this work.
04:24Yeah.
04:25Of course.
04:26Yeah.
04:27This is what you got to do.
04:28If you're a good football team, you can't be, and by the way, very few are, you can't
04:32be reliant on one person unless that person's your quarterback.
04:39That's the way I, and I know we've talked about this in different ways in recent months.
04:44That's kind of the way I view this whole thing.
04:47Go to the Jets last year, play four.
04:50Your expectations changed.
04:51Why?
04:52Because there's a quarterback, quarterback.
04:54But if it was Brees Hall, you'd be like, Oh, tell me more about this Braylon Allen guy
04:59who scored a couple of touchdowns yesterday.
05:01Let's take a look.
05:02You know, Jordan Mason.
05:04Okay.
05:05200 yard games.
05:06You can still function.
05:07You can function.
05:09You start losing a bunch of them, worries you a little bit, but no, like the 49ers have
05:14enough talent to still go win football games.
05:18I have no question in my mind.
05:19I don't know that the Rams do.
05:20I really don't like they're so based on those two guys and then giving Stafford time and
05:26their offensive line is also banged up and not performing.
05:30So if you've got no O-line and both star receivers are out, yeah, you're going to stink.
05:37You're going to stink.
05:38Yesterday was a bit of an alarm and I don't want to get into the Rams, but the fact that
05:43it was whop, whop, whop, and you know, Arizona put it on you so fast, it was 21, nothing
05:47before you even got it before Cooper cup got hurt.
05:50I think it was already for sure.
05:5221, nothing.
05:53And that one got away from him in a hurry.
05:55But yeah, the Niners are going to have to find different ways to go about moving the
06:00ball on offense because the McCaffrey two-way threat, not around and the Debo two-way threat,
06:06not around.
06:07So now you become more of a good old fashioned, ordinary offense, right?
06:11You don't have like the pre-snap motion and the eye candy and oh, look, Debo's in the
06:15backfield.
06:16McCaffrey split out left.
06:18Well, now you're more of like a, just a good old fashioned football team that, that, and
06:23I guess is this two words or three pre pre-snap motion?
06:27I guess that's two words.
06:28One of them being hyphenated.
06:29I'll allow it.
06:30Is that accurate?
06:31Sure.
06:32All right.
06:33That's, that's really what I think you lose here.
06:35That's what you lose.
06:36That eye candy.
06:37Yeah.
06:38It's not a big deal in a Shanahan system.
06:41You can call it a weakness if you want.
06:43It's just taking away a good portion of what makes his play calling so special.
06:50So I'm told like if you're defending against it, that's what makes it so hard and they're
06:57going to not like, it's not like they will not have motion anymore, but it's not as you're
07:03putting it.
07:04Eye candy.
07:05It's not as frightening when those matchup difficulties that are caused by those two
07:10players are not there.
07:11It's positionless football.
07:13And think about it from a defensive coordinator standpoint, when you know, you have a huddle
07:18and you've got McCaffrey and Debo Kittle and use check and Brandon IU, cause you're five
07:23eligibles.
07:25So to speak defensively, you don't know what they're going to do.
07:28It might be use checking Kittle on the line.
07:30It might be McCaffrey out wide with Debo in the backfield.
07:33It could be any number of those combinations when you don't have McCaffrey and you don't
07:38have Debo.
07:39And now you've got Jawan Jennings.
07:41Well, he's probably not going to be a running back.
07:43The only time he was last year was by accident and that was a disaster, right?
07:47You're probably not going to throw to Saubert a lot, although they did a couple of times
07:51yesterday.
07:52You're not going to go jet sweep to Kittle IU doesn't run the ball much.
07:57So even just by formation, you become much more simplistic to defend against because
08:03in the huddle, if you recognize who the five eligibles are, you pretty much know what they're
08:07all going to be doing.
08:08Right?
08:09For sure.
08:10And you know, my worry now is also for, for more injuries like well, but that's what you're
08:16losing your depth.
08:18Your depth is being challenged and it's like, you know, what happens next?
08:22I mean, one of the scariest things now, no one would have thought of this a while ago.
08:26What if Jordan gets hurt?
08:28Like you literally say in here, you saw Garendo have one carry.
08:32You didn't like the way it looked.
08:34I don't know who they feel like they can trust.
08:36It's a very young backfield now, like incredibly young.
08:40Well, what, what happens if like he's a running back and he's leading the league in carries?
08:46You don't think that guy could twist an ankle or something like that, especially the way
08:49he runs.
08:50Yeah.
08:51So like he's like baby Marshawn.
08:53That's the worry now is that you're quickly getting into a spot where your depth is already
08:59being used and you don't have any more of it.
09:02And so that I like my worry meter, um, it's not all the way up, but yeah, there's some,
09:10there's some like this is, this is not good, right?
09:13I'm my worry meter would be probably at a seven and a half except for the scale of 10
09:19or a hundred.
09:20Okay.
09:21One to 10.
09:22One to 10.
09:23I'll put it at a six.
09:24I was going to say would be a seven and a half, but the Rams are banged up and the Patriots.
09:29I don't think are that daunting because those are the two games upcoming.
09:33I would have it at about a six.
09:34I looked, I looked at the other side of the ball here.
09:37You know what I mean?
09:38Like the defense needs to be better than it was yesterday.
09:41And those are two teams that I feel like the defense with no star receivers on the Rams
09:47and no quarterback to speak of on the Patriots, the defense should be able to do some things,
09:51but they faced a last year's backup quarterback yesterday and, and he did some good things.
09:58So Bob in the city is on weathered and dibs eight at eight, nine, five, seven, nine, five,
10:0370.
10:04Where's your worry meter with the news?
10:06The Debo is now out a couple of weeks.
10:07Hi Bob.
10:08Thanks for calling.
10:09Hey guys.
10:10Great show.
10:11I always love listening to you.
10:12I have a couple of quick things.
10:15I think that the only flounder was an animal house, so it's definitely going to be a good
10:21season for Brock Purdy.
10:22I think.
10:23Uh, let's see.
10:24The other thing was that to all my 49 and fans out there, you know, I just feel that
10:31half the teams that lost last this week, one last week, that's the nature of the game.
10:37There's only a handful of teams that are two and Oh, so, you know, the one that's scary
10:41to me though, is, uh, the saints, cause they completely manhandled Dallas who look like
10:46world beaters last week.
10:48So, you know, it just depends on week to week, but I would say the saints are a little scary,
10:53you know?
10:54So we'll see how far that goes.
10:55Yeah.
10:56Bob.
10:57Thanks.
10:58And you're right.
10:59There's only a handful of two and Oh teams.
11:00And it's nine of them.
11:01Well, it's a handful.
11:02It's not the one.
11:03Well, sure.
11:04Two weeks in.
11:05But I mean, it's not the ones you would think there's the bills and there's the chiefs.
11:10And I guess I give it to Houston, but outside of that, it's not the teams that you thought
11:15were going to be two and Oh, that's for sure.
11:18The Vikings, the saints, the bucks, the Seahawks, these are not the teams that you thought were
11:22going to be two and Oh, I'm not going to be scared by the saints yet.
11:26Again, I, I think it takes a month before you really have an idea of who teams are.
11:35So right now you can say, well, they went into Dallas, ripped through Dallas.
11:39I don't know that Dallas is actually that good.
11:42I really don't.
11:44Winning on the road against Cleveland and a bad quarterback.
11:47Fine.
11:49That's fine.
11:50But I don't, I don't think Dallas is a great team.
11:52I don't know what their identity is other than Dak Prescott and CD lamb.
11:57Weirdest off season of the year.
11:59Did nothing in the run game.
12:01It looks like they did nothing in the run game.
12:04I don't think that's that scary of a football team.
12:07But maybe the saints are phenomenal.
12:09I don't know.
12:10Can't tell yet.
12:11So it's too early to start really.
12:14I think broad brush painting on teams, you can get a decent idea.
12:20I do think that the NFC South is actually going to put forth maybe a team or two that
12:25can be like playoff interesting this year.
12:27I don't think eight and nine is going to win the division again.
12:30Like it has been the last couple of years agreed.
12:33The saints look man, pretty fantastic.
12:37With most points after two games in NFL history and the most points in the last 15 years after
12:42two games now, is it sustainable?
12:45I don't know.
12:46But when you watch them play, they've got weapons in a number of different ways.
12:51It seems.
12:52And, you know, you've got Camara with four touchdowns on Guru's bench and Rasheed Shaheed.
12:57I guess I have to start starting him now on my team because he's a 70 yard touchdown
13:01every week.
13:02Derek Carr sitting in just a bottom of the bench backup spot and I'm like, should I start
13:08playing this guy?
13:09He's putting up truckloads of points.
13:11Truckloads.
13:12But we're going to see.
13:13Here's what I mean.
13:14You're going to get an idea real soon.
13:15You want to hear what the Saints are doing the next three weeks?
13:17Tell me.
13:18Check this out.
13:19So next Sunday they will host the Philadelphia Eagles.
13:23Okay.
13:24On a short week.
13:25On a short week.
13:26Yep.
13:27The week after that, they will go to Atlanta.
13:29And the week after that on Monday Night Football, they will visit Arrowhead Stadium and the
13:37Kansas City Chiefs.
13:38Okay.
13:39A little outdoor game.
13:40By the way, the week after that, they're going to, and again on a short week, they'll host
13:44the Tampa Bay Bucs.
13:45So like, let's play some of those.
13:47Yeah.
13:48It's a proving ground.
13:49Let's get an idea of who the New Orleans Saints really are.
13:52Same thing with the 49ers, by the way.
13:55Like I do think this is a bummer.
13:58And if you're just joining us, we know McCaffrey's on IR, Debo Samuel now has a calf strain and
14:04is going to be out for at least a couple of weeks, says Kyle Shanahan.
14:07I mean, we'll play you some more Kyle here in a second.
14:10Some of it's Debo related, some of it's not.
14:12It's super interesting.
14:13We'll play that for you here in a sec.
14:15But like, there is a piece of me that's like, okay, you know, it's early in the year.
14:20I don't think anything's going to fall apart, but like, let's see it.
14:24Let's see it.
14:25I feel like there's a national thirst for what would this group look like without Debo
14:31and Christian.
14:32There's a thirst for that.
14:34So now we're going to find out.
14:35Yeah.
14:36And I think that thirst comes from, you know, what's going to happen when he makes the big
14:39money.
14:40But now we're getting a little bit of an early glimpse with McCaffrey out for the next three
14:44at least and Debo probably out for two, maybe three.
14:48I was looking at Dr. Nirav Pandya, our good friend from cleared to play and UCSF medical.
14:54And he tweeted out the, the, the calf strain like that, the mean, or the rough average
15:01of time missed is three weeks for an injury like this.
15:05So it, you know, Kyle Shanahan said couple, it might be a few, it might be three.
15:11If you're dealing with three weeks, what does that mean for the offense?
15:14And I do think it's a, it's a good look at Brock Purdy for all that.
15:17Three weeks or three games?
15:19Three games.
15:20Okay.
15:21Three weeks would, would I guess, right.
15:24If he's ready to go in three weeks, that's only two games because he would miss two weeks.
15:29And then on the third week he would play like three weeks from yesterday.
15:32It's a little semantics.
15:33I know what you're saying.
15:34Let's ask doc.
15:35Doc will be on with us tomorrow.
15:36Okay.
15:37So we'll dive into this Debo situation.
