00:00At this time, misinformation is one of the biggest challenges we face, especially when it comes to health.

00:09That's why it's important that we know the right information to help us avoid the spread of diseases such as dengue.

00:19According to the latest data from the Department of Health, 68% of dengue cases in the Philippines have increased.

00:25What's scary here is what if we know the wrong information that could help us avoid the disease.

00:48Good morning, Dr. Eric. Welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.

00:57Just to clarify, I am the former President of the Philippine Foundation for Vaccination.

01:05At this time, I am staying in the Council of Advisors because as the former President, we will continue to serve the foundation.

01:20Sir, with that, sir, regarding vaccination, back then, it was said that the trust of Filipinos in vaccination is higher.

01:28What do you think is the reason why people's trust in vaccination decreased?

01:34What you are mentioning is what has already been discussed about vaccine hesitancy.

01:42Vaccine hesitancy is a feeling that a person will get sick or lose confidence in his decision whether he will be vaccinated or not.

02:03It is important because the result will be that people will lose confidence in getting vaccinated.

02:16There are many reasons for this.

02:18Most of them blame the infodemic or the spread of misinformation.

02:30However, this is not the only reason because there are also those who say that it has to do with health literacy or understanding things about our health or the dangers to our health.

02:46It is important in the surveys that were conducted repeatedly that trust comes from doctors and health professionals who should continue to provide the right information.

03:02Alright, Doc, we understand it's all about health literacy, science communication.

03:07But we also want to understand because there's some jargons when it comes to medicine that laymen or the public do not understand.

03:17We want to know how do we make sure we communicate them with the right information.

03:21Plus, even though there's some jargons, the public still understands, especially when we're talking about vaccination here in the country.

03:30That's why I mentioned that health literacy is the ability of an individual to understand.

03:37What's important here is that kids with a simple mind can provide the right information to their teachers in school about the importance of vaccination, especially for kids.

03:52Every visit to a health center, hospital, or similar situation where they will be consulted will be the responsibility of a doctor or health provider, be it a nurse, midwife, barangay health worker,

04:13who will provide the right and up-to-date information so that no one will doubt the importance of vaccination.

04:26Doc Erick, now that we're in this situation, what steps can we take to strengthen the confidence of Filipinos when it comes to vaccination, especially as you mentioned, to find the wrong information about this?

04:42First of all, if our fellow Filipinos can remember, in the first few months of the year, we had a challenge or issue because we had the Sabayang pertussis outbreak and the measles in Mindanao, in the farm.

05:01It led to a rapid increase in the number of cases, but there was also an issue with the proper supply of vaccines.

05:15So it's not just the confidence that should be our target, but also the supply of vaccines. This is important because who will be vaccinated if there are no vaccines?

05:32And it's also important to separate the local authorities so that the vaccine coverage will be better and higher.

05:44In fact, we have good news. The Philippines is now out of the list of countries where the number of children who have not yet been vaccinated in the first year of their vaccination here in our country.

06:04Speaking of misinformation, aside from the supply of vaccines and confidence, which are some of the factors, we want to know also how the media and trusted sources or primary sources can explain to the public the importance of vaccines.

06:25You know, it's good that you mentioned that and your officials monitored it, especially when the decision of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court came out regarding Dengvaxia,

06:36where it was proven and the allegations were dismissed that Dengvaxia, the vaccine against dengue, was the cause of the deaths of children in the way.

06:51We hope that the media will continue to report it because it will have a big effect,

07:02especially since we are waiting for a new vaccine against dengue that can be included in the vaccines that are administered by the Ministry of Health to give protection to many people.

07:20Dr. Eric Taeg, aside from the lack of supply of vaccines, is there a sufficient supply for now?

07:29Is it enough for the health workers who will be vaccinated?

07:34I don't have information on the vaccines that I mentioned, the Pertazos for example.

07:42But what I know is, as of now, in my monitoring, for example, last week, your officials learned that there is no flu vaccine,

07:55the new flu vaccine for our senior citizens and others that were purchased by the Ministry of Health.

08:03I know that since we were undersecretary in the Ministry of Health, that the Ministry of Health will not neglect this so that it can continue to give protection to senior citizens,

08:18especially since the influence is spreading to other parts of the world and we might be included there.

08:27All right. Dr. Eric Taeg, maybe on a very lighter note, on the mass perspective,

08:33what could be the mitigation and adaptation measures that our countrymen can see and apply in their lives for us to have a dengue-free future?

08:44Okay. The implementation is still ongoing and this is every month of June, Dengue Awareness Month,

08:53wherein the 4S strategy is being pursued, wherein the first S is to search and destroy all breeding sites of mosquitoes.

09:05The second is self-protection measures. We should avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes if we do not follow the first S.

09:13Third is to seek early consultation to find out if it is dengue or if it is a disease because it is a plague or skin rashes.

09:23Fourth is to say yes to spraying if necessary, especially in areas where dengue is a high number.

09:33Right now, we should not assume that dengue will continue to rise, especially if it continues to rain.

09:43As mentioned earlier in your report, the weather is still bad.

09:48It is expected that dengue will continue to rise. There are outbreaks in other areas where the number of cases is increasing.

09:55However, what we see in the coming months and years is that if the new vaccine against dengue can help,

10:06we are also monitoring its implementation in the countries that are using the new vaccine.

10:14We need to study the implementation of the vaccine, together with other medical professionals,

10:24so that there can be a consensus on whether this vaccine should be implemented again.

10:31Especially since we have seen that vaccines play a big role in protecting us from diseases such as dengue.
