00:00This is Police Interceptors, and you're riding with the pride of Northamptonshire.
00:12Ace pursuit drivers, with air support, and a crack dog unit.
00:28They bring down the bad guys, keep the streets safe, and battle 24-7 in the war on crime.
00:45Here's what it is, isn't it? We find them, we lock them up.
00:52Coming up...
00:53Do you know what we've got, mate? We're running onto gate 45 straight through. Stand by.
00:58The chase is on for a prison drug runner.
01:01Doctor, it's a hit-up!
01:03Get out of the car. Out.
01:06Wanted man has something to hide.
01:09Ace, just throw it over there. Just throw it over there.
01:11And...
01:15A cocky biker finally gets his comeuppance.
01:19Ace, get on the floor! Get on the floor! Get on the floor!
01:23Calm down, OK? Calm down.
01:42Northamptonshire's Interceptors police an area of more than 900 square miles.
01:49From some of the UK's busiest motorways, to quiet rural communities.
01:55And with around 1,200 emergency calls coming in each day, a coppers shift here is full of surprises.
02:02We've just got some live intel about a drug dealing in the Queensways, so we're just on the way to there now.
02:10Patrolling the eastern fringes of the county are Interceptors Alex Barry and Josh Unsworth.
02:17We've got any crews willing to make HMU5 Wells, get reports of a prison drop, and then a face mask, dropping drugs off.
02:28A member of the public has just dialled 999 to report a serious incident.
02:35Alex spins on it.
02:38A IC3 male walked down the prison path. He's just gone into the hedgerow now, apparently.
02:44We've got a prison throw over. A black male has been seen throwing stuff over the prison.
02:51So we'll make there now. Apparently it's still in sight.
02:54So we've got crews making as well as us, so we'll see if we can find anyone.
02:58The man was seen trying to toss parcels over the fence of the 5 Wells prison, which has 1,600 inmates,
03:04making it one of the biggest in the UK.
03:07Several units are en route.
03:20Drug use in UK prisons remains widespread, with around half of all inmates classified as addicts.
03:34He believes that one of these leads to the suspect.
03:37Would you reckon left, left? Yeah.
03:39Less than half a mile from the prison's perimeter fence is a car park that the suspect is thought to be using.
03:45Go on by that car there.
03:48A parked-up motor with its lights on is an immediate red flag.
03:53That'll be a hire car, mate, that white Corsa. BP23.
03:57Do you reckon it's a hire car? Yeah.
04:01Crime gangs often use hire cars for ferrying drugs around, but it's no guarantee that this is the motor they're after.
04:09Sorry, did you pass a description of any vehicles for this job, please?
04:12We've got a white Corsa in the car park near to Miller's Park.
04:17There's potentially a hire car, so that could be linked.
04:21Alex decides to follow his copper's nose and blocks the Corsa just in case.
04:27The only vehicle we've got was a black state car or state car.
04:33The lad's out the blocks at lightning speed.
04:37And since a cop's kit weighs around seven kilos, the runner has the edge.
04:42Do you know what we've got, mate? We're running onto Gate 45 slip road. Stand by.
04:47But Josh has an ace up his sleeve.
04:50Cops in tow, sir!
04:53Tow, sir!
04:57Get on the floor!
04:59They've got the man, but has he still got any drugs?
05:19That'll be a hire car, mate, that white Corsa.
05:23After responding to reports of a man seen throwing parcels over a prison wall,
05:27Interceptors Alex and Josh spotted a suspicious motor in a car park near the crime scene.
05:33The only vehicle we've got was a black state car.
05:37And when the lad inside took off...
05:39Do you know what we've got, mate? We're running onto Gate 45 slip road. Stand by.
05:43...all those hours in the gym paid off for Josh.
05:46Cops in tow, sir!
05:51Get on the floor!
05:53Not too far behind is his partner Alex.
05:56Mail detained.
05:58Cops out. Thank you.
06:00Go to phone.
06:02Mail detained.
06:03What's your audit?
06:04We've got him.
06:07Josh reckons he saw the lad toss a parcel.
06:10We're near the Miller Pub control.
06:13Mail's throwing something into the hedges.
06:16Unconfirmed at the minute what it is.
06:18How's it going on your back?
06:23Multiple raps.
06:25Recovered what appears to be multiple raps of Class A from the bushes.
06:31Backups arrived in time to hear the good news.
06:34The Pewits, lads.
06:36Right, fella.
06:381721 hours, you're under arrest on suspicion of Pewits, Class A.
06:42You don't have to say anything.
06:44It may harm your defence.
06:46Alex has just found a second rap.
06:50And while Josh reads the lad his rights,
06:53a team is dispatched to search his motor.
06:56Where are the keys, mate?
06:58In the van.
06:59Got you.
07:02But the suspect's subdued behaviour is raising suspicions.
07:06Are you OK?
07:08He seems unwilling to turn over.
07:11And the lads are keen to know why.
07:14Right, chap.
07:16Stand you up.
07:18Sit yourself up.
07:20Hold on, hold on, mate.
07:22What's this?
07:24What's that, mate?
07:26What is that, bud?
07:28You're more strapped to it.
07:30Yeah.
07:32He's got what looks like a stuffed condom dangling from his waist.
07:36What is it?
07:38What is it?
07:40Josh inspects the bulge.
07:43Jesus Christ, mate.
07:45And pulls out a whopper.
07:47By the way, there's more.
07:48Got a bag?
07:49Got more drugs, lads.
07:52Good skills.
07:53Great work.
07:54Lock it up, mate.
07:55Oh, dear.
07:57This looks to be a top result.
08:00Right, fella.
08:01Anything on you?
08:02We're going to stand you up.
08:04Sit yourself up.
08:05Come on, then, chap.
08:06One, two, three, up we go.
08:08There you go.
08:09Come on, buddy.
08:10There you go.
08:12A search of the lad turns up an ID.
08:14But so far, no more raps.
08:16Where are you from?
08:19Not going to come back to Northamptonshire, are you?
08:22Not for a bit.
08:23Not for a bit.
08:24Probably a good shout, mate.
08:26So a male was seen in a car matching the description of someone
08:29who was throwing items in the prison.
08:32He spotted that there were cops in there playing car.
08:35He's made it on foot, ran away from us.
08:42Not more, surely.
08:44Looks like heroin here.
08:46Alex, you got a bag?
08:48Got more.
08:49It really is the job that keeps on giving.
08:52So with him being from our county as well,
08:55he's probably been paid to throw these over the prison.
08:59But unfortunately for him, we caught him.
09:02In prison, drugs are worth up to four times what they are on the outside.
09:06All right, come on then, chap.
09:10By stopping this lad,
09:11the fellas have likely taken thousands of pounds worth out of circulation.
09:16Mind your head.
09:17Mind your head, chap.
09:18There you go.
09:19Skilled.
09:20Have a seat, bud.
09:21Good luck.
09:22Criminals use a variety of methods to smuggle drugs into prisons,
09:26from stashing them in food deliveries to using drones.
09:30But chucking them over the walls remains the most common.
09:34They'll carry a phone.
09:35Sometimes the inmates will conceal a phone with inside
09:38or they'll get to know the times.
09:40They'll look to go round the back of the prison
09:43and then they'll throw the product over, hopefully,
09:46in an attempt to avoid any sort of prison staff.
09:49Unfortunately, today, this lad wasn't clever enough.
09:52He wasn't quick enough on his toes.
09:54We've identified him in his vehicle
09:56and obviously been able to intercept him straight down the slip road
09:59and take a large quantity of Class A drugs,
10:01so really impressed with that today.
10:04A cracking job so far, but there's still a few loose ends that need tying up.
10:09Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
10:12Yeah, go ahead.
10:17There's multiple raps now.
10:18I couldn't tell you at the minute.
10:20I've never seen so much on sort of a personal possession.
10:23Only time I've seen that amount is hidden in a property, mate,
10:26so that's a really good result.
10:29Back at the station, it's like Christmas morning at Casa Scarface,
10:33as parcels of powder are unwrapped one by one.
10:37So I'm just putting it in this container here
10:40to check if it's amphetamine.
10:44More commonly known as Speed, amphetamine is a Class B drug.
10:49So that's gone bright orange straight away,
10:51so it's a clear indication that it's going to be amphetamine.
10:55This Speed is just one of the different substances found on the runner.
11:00In this package, we're not too sure what it is,
11:02but it does smell very strong.
11:05Here we've got four quite large blocks of dry cannabis
11:09that's wrapped up with coffee,
11:12which is used to put off the smell of cannabis.
11:15So it's a risk that he was willing to take and he's been caught.
11:18The runner was arrested for possession with intent to supply
11:21Class A and Class B drugs.
11:26The drugs have been sent away for further testing,
11:29and the case is still ongoing.
11:39Every year, around 260 people die in drink-driving-related accidents.
11:46But for many cops, drug-driving remains the biggest menace of them all.
11:51We've seen first-hand people die on the roads through drug-driving,
11:58and we'll continue to get out there and take these people off the road,
12:02because, unfortunately, it affects too many lives and families.
12:08If we've got suspicion now, we'll do a drug wipe. It takes eight minutes.
12:12So if that device comes back saying positive,
12:16you know you're pretty much game on for an arrest.
12:27They're still popping around, though.
12:30It's late on a Tuesday, and in Northampton,
12:33Callum and Rachel have been watching a wanted motor
12:36ping ANPR cameras all day long.
12:39Wanted motor ping ANPR cameras all across town.
12:48The car was last clocked in the town centre.
12:51We're at the stop.
12:53Callum puts his boot down.
12:56The car we're looking for now has got a mark on it to suggest it's got document offences,
13:00so possibly fake driving licence, fake insurance, fake MOT, etc.
13:05And it's also linked to drug offences.
13:08I don't know if it's drug driving or possession or supply.
13:11It's just hit down the road from us, so we're just going to go see what's going on.
13:15It could be nothing, but it could be with no licence, no insurance and drugs.
13:20So we'll soon find out.
13:23Despite being trained in Taser, Stinger and advanced driving,
13:27tech-savvy Callum reckons the best weapon in a copper's arsenal
13:30is automated number plate recognition.
13:34And the network tonight is telling him one thing.
13:37There's a bad guy loose in town.
13:40Looking for an Audi A7.
13:44Several other units are also hoping to smoke it out.
13:48But it's very active around the town centre.
13:52Callum and Rachel cruise the streets until they spot colleagues
13:55in an armed response vehicle up ahead.
13:58And in front of them is an Audi A7.
14:01The ARV has beaten them to the pull.
14:04So Callum decides to block the Audi's potential escape route,
14:08which proves a canny move.
14:12He needed this well to go.
14:14Did he? Yeah.
14:16Colleagues behind have clocked that he's up to something.
14:19He's just put a load of drugs in the van.
14:23Open the car.
14:24He's just thrown a big bag of drugs in the van.
14:27Open the car.
14:28He's just thrown a big bag of drugs in the van.
14:31Get out of the car.
14:33Out.
14:34He's been drinking. He's just thrown a load of drugs in the van.
14:37This bloke clearly has one or two things he wants to hide.
14:42He's just thrown it over there. Over the wall.
14:46As Callum goes to cuff him, he slips an arm out
14:49and tosses a phone across the road.
14:51Class A as well.
14:53It's a big bundle of white in the back.
14:55Officers recover the phone in no time.
14:58That was silly, wasn't it?
15:00What's your name? Yeah.
15:02OK. Yeah. Come take a seat in here for a minute.
15:05Do you want to search him first?
15:07Before getting frisked, the bloke wants to chat.
15:10My friends can't call me, I just take it.
15:12Sorry? My friends can't call, I just take it.
15:14Oh, OK. You'll fail a drug wipe then, won't you?
15:16Hmm? You'll fail a drug wipe then, won't you?
15:18No. Well, if you're just taking coke, you will.
15:21No, I'm not. I'm not taking anything.
15:24You just told me you're just taking coke.
15:26I didn't tell you, never. OK.
15:28So you're going to do the test? We will do the test.
15:31Talking yourself into a drug wipe is not the smartest move.
15:36Got a lot of cash on you? No, man.
15:39No? Not really a lot.
15:41That's more than I've got in my pocket.
15:43Carrying cash isn't a crime.
15:46There's a little bag of your white powder.
15:48Just in your front console.
15:51But having bags of suspicious white powder in your car could well be.
15:56You're currently under arrest on suspicion of possession of a Class A drug.
15:59You don't have to say anything, but it may well be defence
16:01if you do not mention or question something you later rely on in court.
16:03Anything you do say may be given evidence, OK?
16:06While Callum goes to get the wipe,
16:08interceptors searching the Audi find something else.
16:11He's got Class B on him as well.
16:13You're further under arrest for possession of Class B.
16:15Oh, and there's more white there as well.
16:18Yeah, so you're currently under arrest for possession of Class A and Class B at the minute, all right?
16:22The charges are racking up faster than an umpire at the crucible.
16:27I'm lifting for that as well.
16:29And Rachel's just chalked up another one.
16:31Oh, you're further under arrest for being a disqualified driver, OK?
16:34I'm not disqualified. You are, so you don't have to say anything,
16:36but it may well be defence if you do not mention or question something you later rely on in court.
16:39Anything you do say may be given evidence.
16:41So, without further ado...
16:43Stick out your tongue for me.
16:46The man denies having taken any cocaine,
16:48but in less than ten minutes, we'll know for sure.
16:51In the meantime, it looks like he's got an attack of the munchies.
16:58What are you doing?
17:03Trying to eat my seat?
17:05Don't eat my seat.
17:06I like my seat.
17:08Yeah.
17:09No, I don't want to eat it.
17:12No.
17:13You don't eat my seat either.
17:14I'm not going to eat it.
17:17Interceptors see all sorts on the night shift,
17:19but a seat licker must be a first.
17:22A failed drug wipe, however, is sadly all too common.
17:26And you're further under arrest for driving whilst over the specified limit of cocaine,
17:30so you don't have to say anything, but it may well be defence
17:32if you don't mention or question something you later rely on in court.
17:34Anything you do say may be given evidence, OK?
17:36With so many offences under his belt,
17:38it's little wonder that he's apparently struggling to keep up.
17:43Can you tell me again?
17:44You want to know again?
17:45Yeah.
17:46Right, remember it this time.
17:47Disqualified driving.
17:48Yeah.
17:49No insurance.
17:50Possession of Class A.
17:52Possession of Class B.
17:55I think it was cannabis, wasn't it?
17:56Yeah, suspected cannabis.
17:57Cannabis.
17:58Where it was?
17:59In the car.
18:00Where?
18:01Where was it?
18:02In the jacket in the back.
18:03In the jacket in the back?
18:04Oh, yeah, it's for myself.
18:06It's for yourself?
18:07Yeah, it's not.
18:08OK.
18:09And driving whilst over the specified limit of cocaine.
18:11OK.
18:12Now that's been cleared up,
18:13the driver can be escorted to the nick to give a sample of blood.
18:18And hopefully he'll get no further cravings to snack on the station furniture.
18:23We're going for this vehicle which I think could be nothing,
18:25could be something, document offences and possible drug offences.
18:29Nine times out of ten they are quite straightforward,
18:31but this one, we looked for it for a little while,
18:34the RV's got behind it, they've stopped it,
18:37it's then tried to go.
18:40But luckily we've managed to pull in front of it so he hasn't been able to get away.
18:43We've got out of the car and detained him.
18:45One of the ARVs have seen him throw some drugs in the back seat.
18:47And as I've gone to put handcuffs on him,
18:49he's managed to get hands free to throw a phone over the wall,
18:51which we've now recovered.
18:53Plan for the minute is just to get him into custody.
18:55So we'll work out what we've got
18:56and then see if we need to deal with any other offences.
18:59On top of the driving offences,
19:00Seat Licker pleaded guilty of possession of both Class A and Class B drugs
19:05and was fined almost £400 and banned from driving for three years.
19:10He was also charged with two counts of drug driving,
19:13but has since failed to appear at court and is now a wanted man.
19:19Coming up...
19:22A cocksure biker uses the cops for sport.
19:28And...
19:30A late night driver with a familiar whiff.
19:35Twice the legal driving limit.
19:52There's intel around the rider for drug dealing.
19:55Runaway motorbikes.
19:57He's wearing full protective gear and a helmet.
19:59Can be a flippant nuisance.
20:02Because when a bad guy's on two wheels...
20:07He's nimble...
20:11He's quick...
20:15And can reach the paths other vehicles cannot reach.
20:32It's the early hours and interceptors in a marked car
20:35have just got behind a motorbike with an intriguing number plate.
20:45The plate declares that the rider will run, so they light him up.
20:50And he duly obliges.
20:56The bike is a Kawasaki.
20:58Has a 1000cc engine and can do 0-60 in under 3 seconds.
21:05In short, it's an absolute beast that goes like the clappers.
21:14Fortunately, the roads are dry.
21:18And despite the occasional early rider, there's not too many other vehicles.
21:22But now the rider has slowed...
21:27And seems to be filming the interceptors with his phone.
21:37The fella appears to be weighing up his next move.
21:43Which turns out to be letting rip at full throttle.
21:53Aside from the dodgy number plates,
21:55the interceptors have no idea why the biker is failing to stop.
22:02But he's proving a menace on the roads that needs to be taken down.
22:10Because stunts like this are putting innocent lives in danger.
22:17Now the bike is leading cops into a more built-up road.
22:22A more safe area.
22:27Which means more hazards and bigger risks.
22:35But he's showing no signs of throwing in the towel.
22:39In fact, he seems to be reveling in the thrill of the chase.
22:44An outstretched arm arrogantly tells the interceptors which way he's leading them next.
22:53The cocksure runaway clearly reckons he's in charge.
23:01But goading the interceptors like this won't win him any fans.
23:06It'll just make the police more determined to reel him in.
23:10But they need a plan.
23:13Because the traffic is slowly building.
23:17And with every twist and turn...
23:19And duck and dive...
23:25It becomes clear that this lad is simply using the cops for sport.
23:32A stinger could do the trick.
23:37And the interceptors have got something else in their favour too.
23:43Strength in numbers.
23:44There's now four cop cars hunting down one road biker.
23:49And this hungry pack of wolves smell victory.
23:55The lead pursuit driver moves in.
24:00But attempting tactical contact at these speeds is too dangerous.
24:08After a 15-minute pursuit, it looks like the lad's running out of ideas.
24:13But he's got one more trick up his sleeve.
24:20A narrow footpath is no place for a BMW 340.
24:25So now the team split up to hunt him down.
24:32Officers in one of the marked cars have a hunch about where he's gone, so take off on their own.
24:43And sure enough...
24:45Proof that you can run, but you can't hide.
24:54As he mounts the pavement, cops give him a gentle nudge, which proves decisive.
25:12Finally, this wild ride is over.
25:23And the lad, who just a few minutes ago reckoned he was king of the road, is now putty in their hands.
25:43Don't call me darling. I ain't your darling.
25:51He's a real charmer.
25:56But sadly has no idea of the chaos he's just caused.
26:13Disqualified.
26:16He's got no licence and no insurance, so the bike's been seized.
26:24And he's missing work today, cos he's off to the nick.
26:27It took 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 cars to stop one man. That's crazy.
26:33It could have taken one if he'd just stopped.
26:36I don't want to stop.
26:37No, that's why I get ravaged.
26:39The cops were quite right.
26:41For failing to stop, dangerous driving, having no licence or insurance, will run, risky digging is banned.
26:48What's more, he was ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid community work, plus 15 days of rehabilitation work.
26:54Let's hope that does the trick.
27:06It's well past midnight, and the dimly lit streets are all but empty.
27:116-5.
27:13Except for interceptor Chris Lock and a blue Vauxhall that's giving off dodgy vibes.
27:19Code to vehicle check, please, on Lower Street, Kettering.
27:25Locky's on his own, so gets control to do some digging.
27:38Those suspicions were bang on the money.
27:41As it turns out, the vehicle in front has an expired MOT, so we shall see what the crack is.
27:52Before becoming a cop, Locky worked in a supermarket, where he learned the valuable life skill of sorting the good eggs from the bad.
28:01Only time will tell which category this chap falls into.
28:05Good morning.
28:07Morning, my friend.
28:08What's your name, please, sir?
28:09David Clark.
28:10Okay. You may not be aware, but the MOT expired on this vehicle in August.
28:14It doesn't have a current MOT at this moment in time, unless you've had it done in the last 24, 36 hours or so?
28:22I have, no.
28:24Okay. Would you mind just stepping out? Join me at the roadside?
28:30The driver is polite and cooperative. We should make for a smooth stop.
28:35What brings you across this neck of the woods today, sir? Because the vehicle's registered in Market Harborough.
28:39Do you still live over in Harborough?
28:41Still live there, my friend.
28:42Still live there?
28:43The man says he's just dropped some family members at hospital, so Locky may well cut him some slack.
28:50Control, can I get a code one person check, please, and DL?
28:54As long as there's nothing murky on the background check.
28:57Do you have a driving licence at all?
28:59Because at the moment, our control room aren't finding any record of a driving licence with those details you've provided.
29:13But you're adamant you have got a driving licence?
29:16Yeah.
29:18While Locky's colleagues continue running checks, the man gets his wife on the phone.
29:23Well, I've been pulled over the place and they're saying that the MOT's run out.
29:28I'll get it out and show the police officer.
29:32It sounds like there could be some proof in the dash.
29:36Is that it, man?
29:37No, that's not an MOT. That's just an invoice for some work that's been done on the car.
29:42But Locky's just heard back from control.
29:46To be fair, the MOT has paled into insignificance with the other information I've been provided.
29:52So, the time is 1.36 in the morning, you know, under arrest for driving while disqualified and for driving without a valid MOT on the vehicle.
30:01You're also under arrest on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle without insurance as well.
30:06So, if we could just end the phone call, please.
30:10With the driver under arrest and off to the nick, Locky's got a problem.
30:14Yes, yes, it's just, we've got, I've got a juvenile here and we'll be obviously looking at section 165.
30:22The man's son is just 14, so we'll need a separate police unit to escort him to his mum, who's at the hospital.
30:29Are you going to be handcuffed, OK, sir? So, if you could just step out of the vehicle and place your hands like that for me.
30:33Well, you don't need to. I'm not going to run away.
30:36It's not that. It's for my safety during the transportation. That's the main reason behind it. OK.
30:42It's safe to say that this bloke's evening is not turning out as planned, all thanks to Locky's copper's nose.
30:49The gentleman's shown he's disqualified until next year, therefore can't have insurance.
30:56So, he's been arrested for disqual driving, no MOT and no insurance.
31:00So, we'll just wait for the other crew to get here and then we'll work out a plan of action of who's going to do what.
31:09After a couple of minutes, the lad's ride arrives and he'll be safely reunited with his mum in no time.
31:14Unfortunately, Locky's still not done with Dad.
31:18Have you had anything to drink tonight, either? Have you been drinking any alcohol?
31:22I have, no. I'm OK, Dad.
31:24OK. I'm going to go through a roadside breath test with yourself as well.
31:27So, I require you to provide a specimen of breath for analysis by way of an approved device at the roadside.
31:33Now he's admitted to having a couple of drinks.
31:37But at the moment, the man can't be tested.
31:40I've actually run out of breath tubes, so I need to arrange for someone to meet me outside custody with the breath tubes so I can do the breath procedure.
31:47We're going to get this man across to the custody block so we can get him processed and booked in.
31:53Locky needs the driver to take a roadside breath test before putting him on the intoxiliser at the nick.
32:00So, he heads off to the station where he grabs a breath tube.
32:04Cheers, Lewis. I thought I had plenty and I've clearly used them all.
32:08Before taking the driver a few metres back off-site where he can finally get the long-awaited lungful.
32:15Right. If you could take a big, deep breath and then keep blowing into this until I tell you to stop.
32:22Keep blowing, keep blowing, keep blowing, keep blowing. That's good. Thank you very much.
32:26Anything over 35 is a fail.
32:31This failed as well. That's about twice the legal drink and drive limits.
32:35So, you're also under arrest for section 5, drink drive. OK?
32:39He's blown over 70, more than twice the legal limit.
32:43So, we've got drink driving, no MOT, no insurance because he's disqualified.
32:48So, he can't hold insurance while he's disqualified.
32:51So, we've got a whole raft of offences at the moment.
32:54So, we'll get him through to custody, get him booked in and we'll take it from there.
32:59Worryingly, the bloke's booze levels don't look good.
33:03Worryingly, the bloke's booze levels didn't improve when he got inside.
33:07In fact, once on the evidential test, he blew even higher.
33:12In court, the judge showed little mercy,
33:14handing him an eight-week suspended prison sentence, 20 rehab days,
33:18a fine of over £200 and a four-year driving ban.
33:23It's Sunday afternoon, and Harrison and Tanya are on the lookout
33:26for any weekend drivers who are up to no good.
33:30That kid in the car today...
33:32That car does not look like it's strapped in.
33:34I know, I was just thinking that.
33:36What's caught their eyes, a small child riding loose and free
33:40in the back of his silver Suzuki.
33:43I hate stuff like this. Very frustrating.
33:46It's a very, very frustrating situation.
33:50I hate stuff like this. Very frustrating.
33:52Especially if a parent's got a seatbelt on.
33:54Yeah, that bit is my favourite bit.
33:57So you value your life more than your child.
34:02More than a third of car occupants killed in crashes
34:05are not wearing a seatbelt.
34:07And it's the law that kids must use a booster seat until they turn 12.
34:13Can you turn your car off for me, please?
34:16Why is she not in a car seat?
34:19No, that's not right, is it? Cos she's in a car.
34:22She's not in a car seat and she's got no seatbelt.
34:24Let me stop you. Why has she not got a car seat?
34:28Right, but you have just come from there.
34:31She's got no car seat, no seatbelt on.
34:36The man's trying to explain that he's only driving a short distance,
34:39but the girl is just three years old, and Tanya's having none of it.
34:44Does she have a car seat?
34:46I have.
34:47Where is it?
34:48Why is she not in it?
34:52What language do you speak?
34:54Romanian.
34:56The cops need to be sure their message sinks in.
35:00Hello?
35:02Hello, yes.
35:03So Harrison gets a Romanian translator on the line
35:06to help navigate the language barrier.
35:09We are dealing with him because his daughter
35:11has not got any suitable seatbelts or a car seat on,
35:14and we think it's completely unacceptable
35:16that he's going to put her at serious risk
35:18and he's going to have a seatbelt on himself.
35:30She had the seatbelt, but she took off the seatbelt herself.
35:35OK, the thing is with her taking the seatbelt off,
35:38she wouldn't have to take a seatbelt off
35:40should she be in an appropriate car seat.
35:42Baby-faced Harrison's not been on the force long,
35:45but readily admits he's a stickler for the law,
35:48especially when it comes to child safety.
35:53There's no excuses. It's silly.
35:55He's putting her at risk for it, so he's going to get a ticket.
35:59In addition to that, we're going to have to put a safeguarding in
36:02for the child because of the danger that he's put the child in
36:05by letting her roll around in the back seat, basically.
36:08If he has a crash, she will get hurt.
36:12The man's details check out, and he is fully insured.
36:16But seeing as he has no car seat for the girl,
36:18Harrison is left with little choice.
36:21I'm not happy that he drives with her in the car,
36:24so the child's going to have to get out of the car.
36:27He's going to have to park the car up and walk back home
36:30because you can't drive with the child with no belt on or anything.
36:35Fortunately, the bloke lives just around the corner.
36:38Thank you for your time, Interpreter. It's much appreciated.
36:41Just for one second.
36:42So those little legs won't have too far to walk.
36:45Bless her.
36:46There you go, up on there.
36:47And hopefully when he comes back to collect his car,
36:49he puts the girl's seat back in and leaves it there.
36:53It just annoys me. He'll put a seatbelt on himself, so he'll be fine,
36:57yet he's happy for the child to roll around in the back.
37:00I said to him, I was like, where's your seatbelt?
37:02He's like, I've got one. I was like, yeah.
37:04We know. We see.
37:07The dad was reported for not having a seatbelt on a child.
37:11After he failed to attend an educational course on road safety,
37:15he received a court summons in the Post.
37:17He pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £146.
37:27Still to come...
37:29What did you say your date of birth was?
37:31Why lying to the Interceptors will get you nowhere.
37:34I just want to warn you, if we do find out you've been messing us about,
37:37you'll be getting arrested for wasting police time.
37:49You guys have a good day.
37:50And you.
37:51Thank you for looking after the road and safety and everything.
37:55Interceptors meet a lot of trustworthy drivers.
38:00Nice bike.
38:02But for every honest joke...
38:04Why have you just swapped seats?
38:06Yeah, because his hand is sort of broken.
38:08There are a dozen Bertie Bold spinners.
38:11So they swapped seats because his hand was broken?
38:13It's rubbish.
38:18It's quite funny when people start spinning you a yarn
38:23because you can just tell that the cogs are whirring a bit too much.
38:29One of the good things, especially when it comes to identity now,
38:32is we've got these mobile fingerprint devices.
38:36So if we think that they're spinning the yarn
38:40and they're probably on the system already,
38:42we can see, basically, that they're just trying it on.
38:52It's Thursday evening.
38:55It's four minutes to go, so we should have time.
38:59And Callum and Stuart are en route to the M1
39:02to intercept a black Hyundai Santa Fe.
39:05Right into a car, coming up the motorway, 14 to 15.
39:09It's a race to catch up with the Hyundai before it leaves the motorway.
39:15And evening traffic isn't helping.
39:19But with the help of blues, twos and some advanced driving skills,
39:23Stuart charts a course through the cars and arctics
39:27and brings them behind their target.
39:29Right, I'm going in front of this.
39:31Whom he overtakes as Callum activates their rear follow-me signal.
39:36Happy? Yeah.
39:40Yeah, yeah, he gave a little courtesy flash.
39:43The driver follows them into some services, good as gold.
39:48And Callum does the honours.
39:53Hello, are you OK?
40:11He says his car was previously stolen.
40:14His documents were never recovered and he has nothing to prove his ID.
40:18Do you have a driving licence?
40:21Let's have a quick check, then.
40:23Callum can confirm who he is.
40:25Do you mind grabbing the fingerprint reader, Stu?
40:28And if he does have a licence, via the fingerprint reader.
40:31Cheers.
40:32What we'll do, we'll stick you on this, then,
40:34if you've got no form of ID, to prove who you are.
40:37While he fires up the machine, Callum digs a bit more.
40:40Do you have any idea why your car might be showing with no insurance?
40:43Er... I've only just recently insured it.
40:47When, recently?
40:49What day are we on today?
40:51Er, we're on... Wednesday, is it? Thursday?
40:54Thursday today.
40:55It would have been Friday.
40:56Last Friday.
40:57So it should have shown up on our system by now.
40:59Who do you think you insured it with?
41:01Er, it's the same as I'd have with public liability.
41:04Simply business.
41:05OK.
41:06A sketchy explanation, but first things first.
41:10Keep it on till it gives us the OK.
41:12That's cool.
41:14Perfect. See if we can find you on here.
41:16The reader connects to multiple databases.
41:23We've had various different versions of it in the past.
41:26And it should confirm his identity in a few minutes.
41:33Not according to your fingerprints, it's not.
41:35Got a different surname coming back on here.
41:37Really?
41:38Yeah.
41:40Any idea what that might be?
41:42Hemsall?
41:43Yeah, that's the one.
41:44Oh, Jesus Christ.
41:45He was a carpenter too.
41:46Er...
41:47Not an old name, is it?
41:48Yeah, well, basically, it was my stepdad.
41:51Right.
41:52He used his name on my name on birth certificate,
41:55and then his car.
41:56A man of mystery, then.
41:57So what's on your driving licence?
41:59Say again?
42:00What's the name on your driving licence?
42:02Will it be Hemsall or Carpenter?
42:03It should be Carpenter.
42:04Have a quick look.
42:05There's a lot about this guy's details that doesn't add up.
42:09What did you say your date of birth was?
42:110408.
42:14How am I getting 0405?
42:180405?
42:19Yeah.
42:20No, that's what's come back on your fingerprint.
42:22Maybe there is step fingerprints.
42:24Right, so what name are you currently going by?
42:26Matthew Carpenter.
42:27With what date of birth?
42:280408.
42:31So I can't find any driving licence record for you at all.
42:34Sorry?
42:40You can't cancel a driving licence.
42:45I'm not convinced he's got a licence.
42:47He's got two date of births on PNC, two different names on PNC.
42:50Yeah.
42:51I've done all the names and all the date of birth combinations
42:53and nothing's coming back on DL at all.
42:54Right.
42:55Have you got a driving licence?
42:57Being honest.
42:58Yeah, yeah, yeah.
42:59That's what I said, my car got stolen.
43:01He told me his car got stolen.
43:02He cancelled his passport and he cancelled his driving licence,
43:04but there'd be no reason to cancel a driving licence
43:06if your car got stolen and you just order a new one.
43:08So if you've got a UK driving licence,
43:10you will be on our database,
43:11regardless of whether you've lost licences or anything else.
43:15Let's jump in the car.
43:16We'll try on the laptops.
43:18Can I just take your key, bud, just so you don't drive off?
43:20We're just going to go do some more checks,
43:21because we don't want to seize it if we don't have to.
43:23The laptop check provides the same result.
43:25I mean, I think he's fairly stupid
43:27if he thinks that we're not going to check this licence out.
43:31Yeah, you'd report it stolen, you wouldn't cancel your licence.
43:34Yeah, but there'd still be a record that he would have had one.
43:37They're convinced now that he hasn't got a licence
43:40and patience is wearing thin.
43:42I just want to warn you,
43:43if we do find out what you've been messing us about,
43:45you'll be getting arrested for wasting police time.
43:47So tell me now, have you got a licence?
43:51He's going to get us a lift.
43:53Have you got a licence?
43:55No.
43:56I thought so.
43:58OK, so we will be seizing the car.
44:00So he hasn't got a licence?
44:02I think we all knew that, didn't we?
44:04He hasn't got one.
44:05Is he just said?
44:06Yeah.
44:07Oh.
44:08Job done.
44:09So he's 50 years old and we can't find anything on our system
44:12to say he's ever had a driving licence,
44:14so I think the chances are he's been driving for about 30 years,
44:17never been stopped, never been caught,
44:19and we've finally caught up with him.
44:21Now he's in a lot of trouble.
44:23That trouble ended at Northampton Magistrates' Court,
44:26where the man with two names, two dates of birth and no licence
44:30was found guilty of driving without a licence and without insurance.
44:34He was ordered to pay fines of over £1,300
44:37and if he ever gets one, his licence will have six points from day one.
44:53So, he's got a licence.
44:54He's got a licence.
44:55He's got a licence.
44:56He's got a licence.
44:57He's got a licence.
44:58He's got a licence.
44:59He's got a licence.
45:00He's got a licence.
45:01He's got a licence.
45:02He's got a licence.
45:03He's got a licence.
45:04He's got a licence.
45:05He's got a licence.
45:06He's got a licence.
45:07He's got a licence.
45:08He's got a licence.
45:09He's got a licence.
45:10He's got a licence.
45:11He's got a licence.
45:12He's got a licence.
45:13He's got a licence.
45:14He's got a licence.
45:15He's got a licence.
45:16He's got a licence.
45:17He's got a licence.
45:18He's got a licence.
45:19He's got a licence.
