Police Interceptors S23E01 (2nd September 2024)
Transcript
00:00This is Police Interceptors, and you're riding with the pride of Northamptonshire.
00:12Ace pursuit drivers, with air support, and a crack dog unit.
00:28They bring down the bad guys, keep the streets safe, and battle 24-7 in the war on crime.
00:53Coming up, a runaway doing north of a ton in a nicked car, has its world turned upside
01:01down.
01:08The Op Revive team paint the town green in Rushden, and a fuller at the final fence in
01:17the Taser Stakes.
01:39Interceptors are skilled pursuit drivers, speed 1-1-0, no traffic, no blood drains.
01:45They're keen to evaluate danger, but the bad guys they chase, aren't so big on road safety.
02:05All Interceptors, they'll be advanced drivers, as a bare minimum.
02:10It affords us the opportunity to drive at great speeds, safely, nothing overrides safety,
02:17so we always have that in the back of our mind.
02:21The people that we end up chasing, the people that we end up dealing with, they most definitely
02:25don't have that.
02:26Their entire mindset is, I must get away, I cannot be caught.
02:38Near to the Leicestershire border, Bertie and his colleagues are following a stolen
02:42Ford S-MAX.
02:43A thief just hopped in and helped himself, when the owner left the engine running.
02:53That was just minutes ago, and the team's already all over the hot Ford.
03:05Other units are en-route to intercept, including Stuart Wilson and Rachel McCready.
03:10If they're coming this way, towards the A6.
03:13Oh, is this going to be it, or is this someone else?
03:18Stuart thinks the pursuit might be heading straight towards them.
03:22No.
03:23But it's a false alarm.
03:26Ashley Road.
03:27They're down here then, I imagine.
03:30So yeah, go back up to this roundabout, back up that way.
03:33They're still a few miles from the action.
03:35There's a white Ford Focus in front of it, probably round about 13, 14, but I can't catch
03:41the reds at the minute.
03:44The S-MAX and the Focus seem to be in convoy, and despite them being in the unmarked, the
03:49cops have likely been clocked.
03:51I wouldn't be surprised if they're aware of our presence now, most of the vehicles on
03:58the road.
04:00The dodgy pair appear to be coming to a stop.
04:04Both vehicles passing up on the near side.
04:08But not for long, the Focus is away.
04:11Bertie moves to block the S-MAX, but it rams his car and breaks free.
04:22We tried to reinforce it, contact has been made, it's going to be going backwards, we
04:26can't, I say we can't.
04:28Vehicle's playing in the stoplight now.
04:34Both cars have floored it, but Bertie's not hanging about.
04:38He soon has the Focus in sight, but overtakes, as he only has eyes for the nicked S-MAX.
04:46The runaway's pushing 100mph, speeds way beyond mortal driving skills on rural roads.
04:55Approaching a bend at 80, he nearly loses the back end.
05:06It's the slalom, and this bloke is all over the shop.
05:13There's a give way, but it doesn't seem the driver has read his highway code.
05:17He's risking it all to escape.
05:20With the country roads narrowing, his speed increasing, and other hazards on the road,
05:29this pursuit is only going to end one way.
05:32Crash, crash, crash, vehicle's overturned.
05:38At crazy speed, the runaway's lost control, clipped a hedge, and flipped the S-MAX onto
05:46its roof.
05:53The cops prepare for the worst.
05:55Stand by, it's overturned, they're trapped inside the vehicle, there is movement inside.
06:01Mercifully, there are signs of life.
06:04How many's in there?
06:06How many of you in there?
06:08Just one?
06:09Yeah, one.
06:09Right, come out on the driver's side if you can.
06:12The mangled door's jammed, so they improvise.
06:17Mind out, watch out!
06:22Right, out you come.
06:24The driver's likely been tossed about like a rag doll, and doesn't know which way's up,
06:29and which way's down.
06:31We're just trying to get him out.
06:33But eventually, his feet pop out.
06:36Stand up, mate.
06:36One sec, man, I can't see, I've got glasses behind.
06:38Alright, mate.
06:39Aside from sore eyes, unbelievably, he seems okay.
06:44Okay, you're nicked for stolen motor vehicle, failed to stop.
06:46Stolen?
06:47Listen to me, you're nicked for stolen motor vehicle, failed to stop, dangerous drive.
06:50You got water?
06:51Probably no insurance, probably no license, et cetera, et cetera.
06:53You do not have to say to me, you may arm your defence if you do not mention, when questioned,
06:57something which you're lying in court.
06:59Anything you do say may be given in evidence.
07:00Yeah, no problem, bruv.
07:02You want to stand up, yeah?
07:02Let's move down a bit, bruv.
07:03Come on.
07:05That's a hell of a situation.
07:07I ain't gonna run, bruv.
07:08I'm gonna stick you in cuffs anyway, mate.
07:09You just had a doozy of trying to get away from us, yeah?
07:13The bracelets go on, as Stuart and Rachel arrive
07:19to marvel at how the driver escaped this wreck with his life.
07:25So he's literally bounced into the hedge, come out, round, back into the hedge,
07:33and then that's probably what's flipped it from that side.
07:38It's a lucky boy.
07:40It's also a minor miracle that no one else has been hurt.
07:44He's come round what is a blind bend, and he's lost control.
07:49But just imagine some member of the public coming down here,
07:53and again, this is why we try to get these vehicles stopped.
07:57So, yeah, absolutely ridiculous.
08:03Bertie takes the suspect off to the nick,
08:05and despite Rachel and Stuart missing out on the action,
08:09they are at least here for the clear up.
08:13It's a decent result, thanks to a quick response by the team.
08:18It is always a good feeling when you find them quickly.
08:20Yeah.
08:22Maybe not in this condition.
08:23Well, it's a shame. It's upside down.
08:26Yeah.
08:27Yeah.
08:32The court put Upside Down Man straight after he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving,
08:36handling stolen goods, and driving without a license or insurance.
08:41He was banned for more than four years, had to pay £187, and went down for 14 months.
08:53Still to come.
08:56It's a joke, I swear that on me.
08:58Round and round the garden in Rushton.
09:00Is he going to kick off?
09:02He can stay on the floor.
09:04And the big red key unlocks a well-oiled green machine.
09:11You've got a sophisticated setup again, you've got lights, you've got fans.
09:27It's all go in Rushton.
09:29A wanted man who's evaded cops for three months
09:32has been spotted leaving a hospital in his car, which just pinged an ANPR camera.
09:38This is a chat that's wanted for GBH.
09:42I don't know even what his name is,
09:44but I just heard it on this channel and it's just hit a camera.
09:49The man's accused of assault.
09:52Ideally, Harrison will be charged with assault.
09:55Ideally, Harrison will be double-crewed,
09:57but that doesn't stop him putting his foot down.
10:01Not that far ahead.
10:04Intel comes through on where the suspect might be heading.
10:10Yeah, because it's coming this way, so it's going to have gone here.
10:13The old spider sense is tingling.
10:16It's going to be here, I guarantee it.
10:18And it's working perfectly,
10:20because this guy matches the wanted man's description.
10:24There's no time to wait for back-up.
10:27Hello, mate, you all right?
10:28Yeah, that's a three for an unemployment.
10:29Say that for us, dude. What's your name?
10:31Paul.
10:32Someone's on their way down to you.
10:34And I, is your... I believe you're a wanted mate in a minute.
10:38Oh, Paul, get on the floor!
10:39All right, here we go.
10:40Come on, Paul, get on the floor!
10:47That's one far, I've got one running.
10:50Harrison's a fit copper, but he's carrying seven kilos of kit, although...
10:55Spinny road, back up the estate.
10:56Some kit's quite handy at times like this.
10:59Police officer to the taser, stay where you are!
11:02Police officer to the taser, get on the floor!
11:05Get on the floor!
11:06Get on the f***ing floor now!
11:09Get on the floor!
11:10Why are you doing that, Paul?
11:11Get on the floor!
11:12You're under arrest for GBH in a minute.
11:14The bloke's struggling, so Harrison reaches for the parva.
11:17Police officer spray, get on the floor.
11:20Get on the floor, put your hands behind your back.
11:24Put your hands behind your back.
11:25Why are you filming? I'm doing it, look.
11:28Stay there.
11:29The threat of parva spray has done the trick.
11:33Sit on the floor, mate.
11:35Sit down.
11:38Harrison's taser-trained and likes to keep himself active with long walks with his dogs Bo and Richie.
11:46But this foot chase was more of a short sprint.
11:49Police officer to the taser!
11:51And thanks to a garden fence, the threat of 50,000 volts...
11:55Get on the floor!
11:56Get on the floor!
11:57And the prospect of a face full of parva, the finish line is in sight.
12:02You're under arrest, sir. You're wanted for serious assault.
12:04I'm what?
12:05You don't have to say anything.
12:06You're wanted for welfare.
12:06Serious assault?
12:08I've got him in handcuffs in the garden.
12:09Serious assault?
12:11You don't have to say anything.
12:12You're wanted for tabloids.
12:14If you don't mention it on the fence, if you don't mention it on question,
12:16some police will let you round the court.
12:17You're under arrest.
12:18Anything you do, sir, may be given evidence.
12:19Harrison's got his man, but his man denies all knowledge of the alleged assault.
12:24What assault?
12:26On who?
12:27On who?
12:28I've been in hospital, man.
12:29I know you've been in hospital.
12:31So why didn't you arrest me when I was there?
12:32I wasn't at hospital.
12:34But you just were!
12:35I wasn't.
12:36There's loads of yours.
12:37I wasn't there.
12:38So all of this for what?
12:41This is a joke.
12:43No, a joke will be struggling when handcuffed to the rear.
12:46This is a joke.
12:48Stop kicking off.
12:49This is a joke.
12:49I swear that was...
12:51Ah, what the...
12:53If you're going to kick off, you can stay on the floor.
12:56Just chill on the floor there.
12:58Stop kicking off.
13:00Please.
13:02It's my bad side, I'm not joking.
13:05The best place for Laughing Boy until backup arrives is on the ground.
13:09Can I just lean on that wall, please?
13:11Not at the minute, no.
13:11Because you keep kicking off every time I set you off.
13:14You're trying to pull away and run off.
13:15You already tried to run away once.
13:16I'll just lean against that wall.
13:18And with the suspect proving a handful...
13:21But as you're aware, I'm on my own at the minute.
13:23So we can wait until another crew gets here.
13:25Harrison's grateful to see the cavalry rolling.
13:28He hasn't been searched yet.
13:28He's been locked up.
13:29Can I just lean against that wall, please?
13:30There's two of you now.
13:31He's chucked all his stuff over there.
13:33They're my tablets.
13:33I've just got out of hospital.
13:34I know they're your tablets.
13:36Harrison's all heart.
13:39This is a joke.
13:40And it takes all of this when you could have arrested me in hospital.
13:43This guy's been wanted for three months.
13:46But it turns out the Interceptors nicked him a day too soon.
13:50I was literally going to hand myself in tomorrow.
13:55He tells a heartbreaking tale.
14:00You're pulling your taze about on me.
14:02Did I have a blade? No.
14:04I don't know.
14:05You ran off.
14:06I didn't have time to stand around and check on you, did I?
14:11When you legged it.
14:12No, because I'm getting nicked for f***ing all.
14:16But I've never met you before.
14:18But unfortunately, you're shown as wanted for a pretty serious offence.
14:25Despite his protests, he's off for a trip to the nick.
14:29It's all right.
14:29Stand up, because then we'll get to your car.
14:31Yeah, please.
14:35Where he'll have some serious questions to answer.
14:40Can you get me tablets as well, please?
14:43And your phone.
14:43We'll get that as well.
14:45Seriously, thank you.
14:46I don't have my car, so I'm there somewhere.
14:47I'll go and say that in a minute.
14:48He's launched his phone.
14:53A collar three months in the making.
14:56I don't know.
14:56You ran off.
14:58Yeah.
14:59Yeah, a little cheeky foot chase.
15:01Thanks to some superb solo work by Harrison.
15:04This is the stuff he had in his pocket.
15:06He's got a bit of cash in his pocket as well, I think.
15:09Not at the minute, no.
15:12I'll just have a look for his stuff.
15:14Yeah, thankfully, the Taser red dot had the effect this time,
15:17and it kind of got him a bit subdued.
15:19So a single crew, you've always got a decision to make.
15:21But yeah, it's good.
15:23He's in handcuffs.
15:24That's the main thing.
15:25There's no injuries, and he's arrested.
15:27So yeah, it's a good job, to be fair.
15:31Despite his sprint from the cops,
15:33no charges were brought regarding the alleged assault.
15:40But Harrison did bag a new recruit.
15:42What is that one?
15:43Let me have a look at that one.
15:45That is cool.
15:46That's like a proper police hat, isn't it?
15:49That suits you.
15:53A future interceptor in the making.
15:56Try this one.
15:56I'll see how you look.
16:01Now you look like a traffic car.
16:04That's what we like to see.
16:19The market in illegal cannabis in the UK is worth about 2.6 billion a year,
16:25with more than 250 tons sold to over 3 million users.
16:30Gangs are increasingly setting up cannabis farms...
16:33Oh, that's quite a decent grow.
16:35...that convert entire properties into production lines for Class B drugs.
16:41Got three bedrooms full of cannabis grows.
16:46And this morning, Lee Goodwin and the team
16:48are hoping to put a dent in this illegal trade.
16:51So we've rushed in today to execute a warrant for a potential cannabis factory.
16:56In the past two months, we have done two warrants,
17:00one at the old Brian Watts carpet shop,
17:02which is to the left of the property we're going to today.
17:05And we've literally last month done a warrant on the other side
17:08at the old learning centre.
17:12But before she leads this morning's raid,
17:14Lee wants to revisit past glories,
17:17starting with the site of the old early learning centre.
17:21This was a cannabis factory in here.
17:23Officers entered through these doors here.
17:26And what they discovered was an operation on an industrial scale.
17:31This is room two, ground floor.
17:33It's 109 plants.
17:35The interceptors had got there just in time.
17:39Mature plants.
17:41This was a serious set-up with nearly 1,000 plants.
17:46This is room four, ground floor still.
17:49It's 250 plants.
17:51Going into room five upstairs, number of plants is 77.
17:56There are numerous notes written in Albanian, I believe.
18:03They even had living quarters of sorts.
18:06Two mattresses.
18:09This is the toilet and where they do their washing of their clothes.
18:15And then this old carpet factory just here.
18:19Was, again, another cannabis factory.
18:24The interceptors believed this former factory
18:29had been converted into a cannabis farm by the same gang.
18:37And while the front of the building was empty,
18:42the back of the property was a different story.
18:50With a sophisticated set-up.
18:53Very well done.
18:56Hundreds upon hundreds of plants.
19:02Yeah, got living quarters.
19:03And a suspected farmer.
19:05All right, come out here now.
19:06Come out.
19:07Come out.
19:08That's right, out there.
19:10Over there.
19:10I'll get him.
19:11You get him.
19:12All right, put your hands behind your back.
19:13Behind your back.
19:14Listen, mate, you're under arrest at the minute on suspicion of cultivation of cannabis, all right?
19:20Between them, the two raids garnered almost 2,000 plants
19:23with an estimated street value of two million pounds.
19:27During the busts, the team noted suspicious activity in a nearby flat.
19:31And that flat is the target of today's raid.
19:35Though Lee's unsure if it's a working factory.
19:38Potentially, by our disruption of those two,
19:43we may have spooked the set-up in the cannabis factory that we're going to today.
19:49Or it may be so brazen that they think they have been forgot about.
19:56There's only one way to find out.
20:00No need for the big red key just yet.
20:04It's the police, can you let me in?
20:07Sometimes, doors to weed farms can be reinforced to make entry as difficult as possible.
20:14Not this one, though.
20:17Police officers!
20:18Officer, we're taking this thing, we won't!
20:21Clear.
20:23Nobody in here.
20:25It's not looking promising.
20:27Entry gained, no cannabis factory.
20:29No, Gro, but Lee suspects there might have been.
20:33It is stereotypical of a cannabis factory.
20:36It's stereotypical of a cannabis factory or at least a small gro that would have been in here.
20:39We've got very little on the work surfaces in the kitchen.
20:42It's dirty, it's full of flies.
20:45The gang would have likely have rented the property
20:48with the landlord completely unaware of their activities and then abandoned ship.
20:53My suspicions is they've been spooked by the other two that we've done
20:57and they have returned it to its relatively natural state, cleared everything out.
21:02If there was a cannabis factory in here, it would have just been a hydroponics tent.
21:06Well, it looks like bad timing on this one.
21:10Hopefully the next one will be more fruitful.
21:16The Interceptors have one more roll of the dice this morning.
21:22Guys, if you sort of want to ditch your cars around here.
21:26Although not connected to the other raids, there's intel of another gro around the corner.
21:32Front.
21:33Yeah.
21:35We good?
21:36Yeah.
21:42Just step out there.
21:43Thanks, mate.
21:44The postman drops a letter off next door.
21:47But it's a different type of delivery for the suspect address.
22:00Put yourself to a taser!
22:02I'll hold the stairs, mate.
22:04While they search for anyone inside...
22:06Police officer, put a taser!
22:10...outside, the team have nicked someone trying to leap over the back fence.
22:14And it's soon clear why he was doing the dodgy steeplechase.
22:21It's not on the scale of the industrial operations down the road, but still a decent-sized gro.
22:26Lee gives a tour of the farm.
22:29So this is the first gro room.
22:31You've got a sophisticated setup again.
22:33You've got lights, you've got fans to keep it at a steady temperature.
22:37A thermometer showing steady 27 degrees in here at the moment.
22:41Again, we've got another room, again, with the same setup.
22:46And then you come through to the final room, of which these are more compact.
22:52The windows have been sealed up so that you can't see through them.
22:55Scenes of crime arrive to take photos and dust for fingerprints.
23:02Things usually come up quite well.
23:05Two plants will be taken for analysis, with the rest counted, then sent off to be burnt.
23:14The suspected farmers arrested at the former learning centre were released without charge.
23:19The suspected farmers arrested at the former learning centre were released without charge.
23:27And no action was taken against the worker at the old carpet factory.
23:33The raid on the house saw 63 plants seized for the street value of around 52 grand.
23:39The farmer who tried to jump the fence pleaded guilty to growing the weed
23:43and got 12 weeks inside, plus a fine of £154.
23:49And while the farm is decommissioned to prevent further use, not everything is destroyed.
23:57Any soil or fertiliser or anything like that, we will look to give to the local allotments,
24:02to give back to society.
24:04It's something that we've done in Rushton for many, many years,
24:09and it goes down really well with the local community.
24:13Still to come...
24:14Bro, do you want to search me or what?
24:16Do you want to search me or what?
24:17Calm yourself down.
24:18I'm a pissed off, I've just come back from holiday, man, you're trying to melt me a little bit.
24:22A bag of magic from a fun guy.
24:24What's that?
24:25Oh, mushrooms.
24:27And a lesson from a drink driver.
24:30And what you do is, is you lift up, right?
24:33Fails to impress Rob.
24:35You're not going to ever agree with me on this.
24:38Fails to impress Rob.
24:40You're not going to ever agree with me on this.
24:42No, you're quite right, I'm not.
24:44Northamptonshire has over 300 ANPR cameras,
25:06making it nigh on impossible for dodgy vehicles to travel across the county unnoticed.
25:11So we've received an ANPR marker of a vehicle involved in drug supply
25:17and may have links to weapons that comes back to a village over on East North Hans.
25:24So we suspect it's going back that way.
25:27So we're just trying to play catch up.
25:30Aaron Griff Griffiths and Scott Kimberley aren't the only ones aiming to intercept.
25:35There's intelligence that it may be linked to a firearm, namely a pistol.
25:41Um, it's being reviewed.
25:43Um, hence the reason why firearms are going at the moment as well.
25:47A few miles away in Rushton.
25:49Uh, it's two up at least.
25:51It's a near certification.
25:53No, onto High Street.
25:58Firearms cops have eyes on the car as it parks up.
26:03It's an offside indication.
26:05Reinforce it here.
26:06Another unit is also on scene.
26:11And with the firearms market, they need the driver and passenger in bracelets pronto.
26:23Turns out the two lads have just got back from a break in Bournemouth.
26:31Welcome home.
26:36Section 23 of the amnesia drugs act, all right?
26:38Is there anything in the car that shouldn't be?
26:40According to the driver, he's clean.
26:45But they're not taking his word for it.
26:47No, not yet.
26:48Oh, sorry.
26:50Is there anything on you that's going to hurt me, are you?
26:52No.
26:52Just stand against this wall for us, bud.
26:54Okay, so you're going to be searched.
26:58You're not, mate.
26:59You're going to be searched for perhaps drugs, okay?
27:01Um, I suspect you've got drugs within the vehicle.
27:04Oh, I haven't got...
27:09Griff and Scott arrive on scene to help contain the suspects and search the car.
27:16And that search is only seconds old.
27:21I've literally just started.
27:23When they find scales with the residue of some white powder.
27:29The driver's looking twitchy.
27:30What are you doing?
27:31Nothing, mate.
27:32Stand still then.
27:35Stand back there and watch him so you're out of the way.
27:37They've also found a wedge of cash in his pocket.
27:41Mate, there's nothing going on, mate.
27:43There's nothing for the thing to search me, no.
27:45Nothing to hide, apart from a kinder egg containing what looks like cocaine.
27:52Just possession of at the minute.
27:53You're under arrest on suspicion of possession of class A drugs.
27:56You know what I'm saying?
27:56That may have been too much of a question.
27:58Two minutes later on the court, you do say may be given evidence, okay?
28:01The passenger is arrested for the same.
28:04Just listen to me, you're under arrest on suspicion of possession of class A.
28:08You've been on holiday, bro.
28:09Do you know what I mean?
28:11The best thing about holidays is you come back all relaxed.
28:16You got any stank trousers?
28:17No, bro.
28:17Do you want to search me or what?
28:19Do you want to search me or what?
28:20I'm a pissed off, just come back from holiday, man.
28:22You're trying to stitch me up a little bit.
28:23You're under arrest, aren't you?
28:24I'm asking if you've got any trousers.
28:27I'm here, mate.
28:27Calm yourself down, okay?
28:29You are going to be strip searched.
28:31No custody.
28:31That's all I'm asking you.
28:32Yeah, that's fine, bro.
28:33You can strip search me.
28:35He'll be taken down the nick, but the search of the car...
28:38The driver's side been done.
28:40...just keeps on giving with bundles of weed and...
28:44What's that?
28:45Mushrooms.
28:47Mushrooms, the class A variety commonly called magic.
28:51I'm going to go with mushrooms.
28:53They're individual wraps.
28:54They're individual wraps of class A.
28:56This is B, right?
28:58The fact that some of the drugs are separately bagged means the charges have been upgraded.
29:03Excuse me, mate.
29:05Listen to me, okay?
29:05You're no longer under arrest in terms of possession of class A.
29:09You are being arrested on suspicion of being concerned
29:11with the supply of class A and class B drugs.
29:14The car may have links to weapons, but none are found inside, just drugs.
29:19And Griff wants to know if there are more drugs in the driver.
29:23We have got grounds to drug-warp him to see if he's got anything in his system.
29:27Obviously, he's not very happy, as you can tell,
29:29with our presence or being arrested, which is fine, but we couldn't do that.
29:33Because drugs have been found in the vehicle,
29:35I've got a power to request a specimen of saliva from you.
29:37Okay, section six of the Road Traffic Act.
29:39Specifically, to test for cannabis and cocaine in your system.
29:41It's an authorial comment that I'm making to you to provide a specimen of saliva.
29:45I need to let you know that if you fail to refute my specimen of saliva,
29:49that is a further offence you'll be liable to be arrested and prosecuted for, all right?
29:53And after eight minutes, it's a full house.
29:56Okay, time's 2.57.
29:58You're under arrest for driving a motor vehicle
29:59whilst over the prescribed drug limit, namely cannabis.
30:04It's a great result and the day's work isn't over yet.
30:08So we've got the two in custody and there's an idea that potentially they will have already
30:17tried to make contact with people, to make contact with other people
30:21relating to their home addresses.
30:23So what we have done with that information,
30:25we've gone round to two addresses to perform section 18 searches,
30:29see if we recover anything from either of those addresses.
30:34The searches uncovered a jar of magic mushrooms at the passenger's address
30:38and he received a warning.
30:43The driver pleaded guilty to drug driving.
30:45He was banned from the roads for 22 months and ordered to do 120 hours of unpaid work.
30:52No further action was taken in relation to the suspected drug supply.
31:04The number of people killed in drink driving collisions is at its highest level since 2009.
31:11Even a small amount of alcohol can give drivers a false sense of confidence,
31:16leading them to take greater risks and increase the chances of crashing.
31:21Drink driving, it's still a massive problem for us on the roads.
31:25It's, you know, it's a big problem for us on the roads.
31:28Drink driving, it's still a massive problem for us on the roads.
31:33It's, it ruins lives on a daily basis, up and down the country.
31:37You know, unfortunately, the roads of Northamptonshire are no different to that.
31:40You know, it used to be Friday and Saturday nights,
31:43whereas now it can literally be any time of any day with picking drink drivers up.
31:49And, you know, they really do pose a massive risk to themselves and to other road users.
31:59It's lunchtime and someone's started early.
32:02A call's come in reporting a driver who may be over the limit.
32:06The suspect's just been spotted by another officer pulling into a petrol station.
32:14Looks like it's near-salvificated into the services on Westbridge.
32:21Might be more than two.
32:22Yeah, into the BP. Yeah, not a million miles away. Thank you.
32:28Rob Halfleet is en route in a Mark Beamer 340, and it looks like Rob's target has form.
32:35But he has completed just over ten years of drink driving.
32:38The suspect's in a Jag.
32:42There it is.
32:45One, two. We're with it.
32:48Now it's just a waiting game.
32:51So his only exit is in front of us.
32:54The Jag's filled up with petrol.
32:57It's pulled away, whereas there is.
32:58But its driver's full of booze.
33:01Let's just, before he gets on the main road.
33:06Rob lights him up before his Jag hits the main drag.
33:17Hello.
33:19Just having a chat with the driver. I'll get back to you momentarily.
33:22How are we? You got any idea why I might have stopped you today?
33:25No.
33:25No, okay.
33:27Someone's made a report on the vehicle being driven, I think, potentially quite poorly.
33:31Just wondering if you might be under the influence of any alcohol or anything like that.
33:35I had a can of beer earlier, but that's it.
33:37Oh, right, okay.
33:38Oh, well, that might be all it is then.
33:41Are you okay with your walk in?
33:43Yeah, yeah.
33:44Just because you were holding on to the car. I didn't know if you...
33:46Do you want to come out?
33:47I deal fine. Well, no, it's just...
33:48Yeah, yeah, go on.
33:49I didn't know whether you needed a walker stick or anything like that. That's fine.
33:51Do you want to come and join me in the back of my car?
33:54And then we'll just do the necessaries.
33:57Come around this side. Come around this side.
34:01Jagman's coughed to drinking one beer.
34:05Take a seat in there.
34:07Lovely.
34:08Rob suspects it was one of many.
34:13So when I ask you to do so, I just need you to take a nice deep breath in,
34:17make a nice tight seal around the end of the tube,
34:19and it's just a steady breath until I tell you to stop.
34:22Doing my best.
34:23Absolutely, for me. I'll hold on to the device for you.
34:25So if you want to sit for a sec.
34:29Keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going.
34:32Stop. That's it. Good man.
34:33If you want to hold on to the end of that tube for me.
34:36Okay.
34:37Michael, it's come back as a 93.
34:40Okay, legal limit being 35, all right, which is a fail.
34:44It's either a super strength tinny or he's telling porkies.
34:49Uh, so by March, it's 1346, all right,
34:52and you're under arrest on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle
34:55whilst over the prescribed limit for alcohol.
34:57Okay, you do not have to say anything.
34:59But Jagman's got a cunning plan to get himself off the hook.
35:03Surely you've pulled me and I'm not actually on the Queen's Highway.
35:11I'm in a private garage.
35:13There's one major flaw though.
35:15You are driving your motor vehicle, okay,
35:18on a place or on a road that the public have access to.
35:22It's not a private garage.
35:24There are other members of public there, okay.
35:27Also, it's King's Highway now, remember?
35:30Some drink drivers hold their hands up and take responsibility.
35:34You know, my sort of argument is that my driving was absolutely perfect.
35:41It's not this one though.
35:42My walking, my talking, everything else is absolutely perfect.
35:48It was just somebody that has suggested to you that I drink and drive.
35:57Not the most convincing argument a court will ever hear.
36:00And Rob's got a better one.
36:03The argument I would make, not only professionally but personally,
36:07but if I was driving or if I knew I was going to be driving anywhere
36:11within the, say, next 10 to 12 hours, I would not be drinking at all.
36:18Right.
36:19With the latest figures estimating 260 people
36:22killed in drink drive collisions in a year, Rob's not mincing his words.
36:28If you misjudge one thing because you were over the legal limit
36:31and you end up rolling that in a ditch, get trapped and can't be found, okay,
36:37you could end up well losing your life in it.
36:39Rob's good sense is falling on deaf ears.
36:42Old deaf ears.
36:44Won't you get a bit older?
36:46Oh yeah, go on.
36:49And you've been driving like me for 46 years.
36:53Okay.
36:56If you think you're still sort of slightly over the limit,
37:00you drive a lot more carefully.
37:03And what you do is, especially in an automatic, is you left foot brake.
37:09So that what happens is your reaction time is a lot quicker.
37:14Okay.
37:16You're not going to ever agree with me on this.
37:18No, you're quite right, I'm not.
37:20What happens to your reaction time when you're under the influence of alcohol,
37:23intoxicant or anything else that might affect your judgment and skill perception?
37:26Right.
37:27So what you've said to me then, again, it doesn't wash then, does it?
37:32You don't left foot brake through choice because you think your reactions are quicker,
37:37okay?
37:38You do it because you think you're pissed.
37:40No.
37:41Yes.
37:42So, you know, pointless carrying on the conversation.
37:46Finally, something we can all agree on.
37:49You're quite right, it is.
37:51Yeah.
37:54The bloke's taken to the station to blow on the evidential breath test machine.
37:59And the score is 86, 94.
38:05Yeah.
38:06He's twice over the legal limit.
38:10The seasoned driver with tactics for tipsy motoring pleaded guilty to drink driving.
38:15He got a 20-month ban, 12-month community order and £199 fine.
38:22If you think it's fine to drink and drive, it's not.
38:25You are a danger to yourself and others.
38:29The risks do not outweigh the reward.
38:35Still to come.
38:41The suspect cyclist claims he's squeaky clean.
38:43You always talk like that.
38:45Yes, why not?
38:46So,
39:01electric bike sales have tripled across the UK in the last five years.
39:06And while most are an environmentally friendly way to get about,
39:11some versions are giving the interceptors a real headache.
39:15What we're getting now is people that are building their own electric powered bikes
39:23to the point where bikes are potentially capable of doing 60 miles an hour plus.
39:28They're using them outside the capabilities of what the bike is designed for.
39:33And the brakes just aren't designed to stop them at that speed.
39:38So that is a real problem for us because
39:40the potential for causing serious injury or even death suddenly becomes a lot greater.
39:58It's Thursday night and Michael Hollowell
40:00is after a bloke he suspects to be on a souped up pedal bike.
40:04E-bikes have to be pedal assisted,
40:08but this one's traveling up a hill without the rider even pedaling.
40:15Hello, chap.
40:17Just come here a second.
40:18Bring your bike.
40:20Michael is a keen cyclist himself and knows his way around a pair of wheels.
40:25OK, so it's a push bike.
40:27Yes.
40:27Yeah.
40:28That's been adapted.
40:29Yes.
40:29All right.
40:30It's a bog standard push bike that's been fitted with an electric motor.
40:34The question is, is it street legal?
40:36Where do you turn it on?
40:37So how do you throttle that then?
40:40You need to pedal it.
40:41You don't pedal it.
40:42You weren't pedaling.
40:43You was not pedaling at all.
40:45Come back here.
40:45Come back.
40:46Come back.
40:47Stand here.
40:48If the bike's got a motor able of producing more than 250 watts,
40:52it's considered a motorbike.
40:55Turn it on and show.
40:56It's not on.
40:57It's on.
40:57No, it's not.
40:58It's on.
40:59That is not on because your throttle doesn't work.
41:02Michael's certain the bike's dodgy and has his doubts about the rider.
41:09All right.
41:09So what's your name?
41:12Do you live here?
41:13Of course.
41:13That's what I'm telling you, man.
41:14OK.
41:15So who's living here?
41:16Are you living in here?
41:17Why are you asking me stupid questions?
41:18Why are you losing your rag?
41:19Well, no, you're making me like this.
41:21You know, you're coming and you're telling me some stupid things, bro.
41:24Michael's a fan of comedy legends, The Two Ronnies,
41:27and he's not sure if this palaver in a balaclava is an act, too.
41:33Do you always talk like that?
41:34Yes.
41:34Why not?
41:35Like, I'm being rude with you.
41:36You're being rude with me because you're harassing me.
41:38Like, you're coming up and telling me some crazy stuff.
41:40I'm not harassing you.
41:42Either way, he needs to find out who this character really is.
41:46So have you got a driver's license on you?
41:47No, I don't have a driver's license.
41:48Have you got a bank card on you?
41:50In the house.
41:50Can I bring it?
41:51Is anybody else in the house?
41:52Is anybody else in the house?
41:54Yes, my neighbours, my friends.
41:56Why would your neighbours live in your house?
41:58Huh?
41:59You just message your friend and say, can you bring my bank card out?
42:01Why?
42:02Because that's what I want.
42:03Why I need to do this?
42:04Because I don't want to come in your house.
42:06There's probably no room with all those neighbours in there.
42:10Are you going to give me your details?
42:12If you can, I'll bring it.
42:13I told you, I'll bring it.
42:14No, you're not telling me.
42:14Just message your friend.
42:16I don't have his number.
42:18You don't have your friend's number, although you live with them?
42:20No.
42:21To move things along, they reach a compromise.
42:24Tell you what I'll do, we'll go to the door.
42:26Yeah.
42:27And then you can ask them to bring it to the door,
42:28rather than you go in the house, because I don't want you going in the house.
42:30OK.
42:32Looks like I'm going to run away from your wife.
42:34Do you think I'm like a stupid idiot or what?
42:37I think the jury's out on that one.
42:40Once his flatmate, who may also be his neighbour,
42:44fetches the bank card, Michael runs the details and returns to the bike.
42:48Right, so because of the motor on there, that's a motor vehicle?
42:53Its motor is too powerful for it to be considered a bicycle.
42:56So you are riding a motorbike?
42:59So have you got a driving licence?
43:04Full driving licence.
43:05Do you have insurance?
43:06No.
43:07OK.
43:08OK, so you're driving a motor vehicle.
43:12So you're going to lose your bike?
43:14Yeah, I can take my bike.
43:15OK.
43:15Having accepted his fate, he seems over-keen to get rid of Michael.
43:20You said you're taking my bike, so take the bike and that's it, and go on, then.
43:24Probably because the police database flags him as a wanted man.
43:29I'm arrested?
43:29Right. At this moment in time, you are under arrest.
43:32Things have turned more serious because this joker's marker is no laughing matter.
43:38OK, you're under arrest for a serious assault.
43:41He's wanted for GBH, and he's going to the nick.
43:45Come with me a second.
43:46OK, yeah, yeah.
43:50You sound so happy about it.
43:51I don't mind, man.
43:52You what?
43:53I don't mind.
43:54Stay there.
43:54Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
43:56Happy days.
43:57One dodgy bike and potentially dodgier rider off the street.
44:02I don't mind, man.
44:03You don't mind?
44:03I don't mind.
44:04Stay there.
44:04Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
44:06Happy days.
44:07One dodgy bike and potentially dodgier rider off the street.
44:12No one would ever have stopped him knowing that.
44:15So the good thing is we've found out who he is, and he's coming in,
44:18and we can get him dealt with.
44:19The masked joker is on bail for GBH.
44:22For riding without insurance, he was fined over a grand and disqualified for six months.
44:28And that's no joke.
44:30There's obviously a victim out there somewhere that's
44:33received some serious injuries to be GBH.
44:35So it's good to get this person in.
45:05Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
