Police Interceptors S23E04 (23rd September 2024)
Transcript
00:00This is Police Interceptors, and you're riding with the pride of Northamptonshire.
00:12Ace pursuit drivers, with air support, and a crack dog unit.
00:28They bring down the bad guys, keep the streets safe, and battle 24-7 in the war on crime.
00:45Crash, crash. On the floor, wow!
00:48This is what it is, isn't it? We find them, we lock them up.
00:52Passengers attempting to get out, coming up.
00:55Get out of the car! Get out of the car!
00:58An early morning smash.
01:01On the ground.
01:02Get out of the car now!
01:04A drug turf war.
01:05Please don't shoot in time, sir.
01:07Practice yourself good!
01:09It's nipped in the bud.
01:11And a dangerous drink driver.
01:13Whoa-wee!
01:17Feels rocked, rat.
01:19Don't!
01:20If you try and start throwing your head towards me again, you're going to end up in a much worse position.
01:25Do you understand?
01:38It's a wet start to the late shift on a Monday.
01:43It's a miserable night tonight, isn't it?
01:48Harrison Beverley and Joe Wood are keeping watch over the streets.
01:53When they clock a golf creeping along at a snail's pace.
01:58AF61, that looks a bit dodged, doesn't it?
02:00Yeah.
02:05Bev and Joe are keen to have a word.
02:09Just giving you a run for your money here, mate.
02:12But the driver isn't and hares off into the night.
02:15You've got a light out. Yeah, felt a stop.
02:20You've got a vehicle fell in stop.
02:22Spooked by the interceptors, the driver's not watching where he's going.
02:25He's temporarily off-road at the minute.
02:27Light's out.
02:28Run me AF51, holding on hold till November.
02:31Bev puts his foot down.
02:34We are an advanced driver, TPAT trained, marked BMW 340.
02:39Speed is 75 so far.
02:42And keeps locked on target.
02:49Expert driver Bev is trained in both tactical and high-speed pursuits.
02:55And in these conditions and with this suspect, that's a good thing.
03:03Road conditions are wet. He's done a temporary ATX.
03:06He's safe to continue. Medium risk. Stand by.
03:10The suspect's showing no sign of giving up.
03:13Safe to continue. Speed is 2-0.
03:17So Joe puts in the call for back-up.
03:21Yeah, it's all units. Just start making your way towards Rawds
03:24because we are still in that area. Stand by.
03:28All units are converging on the area.
03:30Try and get out of town centre, mate. Left, left.
03:33But they might be too late.
03:36It's slowing. I think it's got a vehicle problem. It's throwing out smoke.
03:43The Golf looks like it's about to throw out people as well.
03:47Doors are opening. Possible de-cam. Stand by.
03:50Weybridge Road.
03:53One of the suspects is desperate to do a runner.
03:57It's a passenger. I think it's trying to get out, isn't it?
04:00And he doesn't have to wait long.
04:02Nearside passengers attempting to get out.
04:06Bev and Joe need to collar the driver...
04:08He can't get out. He's stuck up in.
04:10..before he drives off again.
04:12Get out of the car! Get out of the car!
04:14So they don't mess about.
04:18Get out of the car! Get out of the car now! Out of the car!
04:21Open the door! Open the door!
04:23I'm here, I'm here, I'm here. I'm going.
04:25What can I do? Resist, resist. Stop resisting.
04:28Put your hand out the window. Put your hand out the window.
04:32I don't want to confuse you.
04:34Driver, vehicle, window, car.
04:37Currently under arrest for failed to stop, dangerous driving.
04:40You don't have to say anything, but it may harm your defence
04:42if you do not mention when questioned.
04:44Some people are later relying on court.
04:46And if you do say, we'll be giving evidence.
04:48Bev thinks he's sniffed out the reason for this suspect's shoddy driving.
04:53The vehicle stinks of cannabis at the minute.
04:55We're just getting the driver out.
04:57So at the minute, no offences as such.
04:59I've locked him up. Yeah, sound.
05:03The dopey driver has weed, but no insurance.
05:06There is cannabis in the vehicle, but I don't know how much at the minute.
05:09So Joe ramps up the charges.
05:11So you've been arrested, OK, for dangerous driving,
05:14failed to stop, no insurance,
05:16driving whilst on a provisional licence and possession of cannabis.
05:19Do you understand that? With the driver in bracelets...
05:23Joe's on the hunt for his passenger, who's still AWOL.
05:29Just in case he's gone to ground nearby,
05:31we're going to stick the drone up and see if he's about.
05:35We'll put it up just in case he has gone into one of the local gardens
05:38and that way we can flush him out.
05:45Joe's one of the unit's newest drone operators.
05:49Anything at this time of night, bigger than a squirrel,
05:51he shows up quite obviously.
05:53And he scans for the man-sized squirrel like a hawk.
05:57He ran down there, so I'm just having a look.
06:00I'm just checking the gardens.
06:02But the passenger's flown the nest and his search comes up empty.
06:07I'm going to bring the drone in there.
06:09And we will get this chap sorted in custody.
06:14Landing. Yeah, copy.
06:16Before the driver's taken into custody, he's tested for alcohol.
06:20Keep going, keep going, keep going. That's it, well done.
06:23And drugs.
06:26There we go, keep it there, thank you.
06:29But it turns out he's a lot cleaner than his car.
06:32So what's happening, mate?
06:34He's passed his breath test and his drugs wipe, which is surprising.
06:37So it could be traffic offences and a possession of cannabis at the minute.
06:41Good result in the end, so...
06:45After his reckless race around the streets,
06:47this bloke was lucky to escape unharmed.
06:53Get out of the car! Get out of the car now!
06:57But Joe wasn't so fortunate.
07:00I cut my hand on the glass getting in the...
07:03..getting in the car, that's all.
07:06Get out of the car now! Out of the car!
07:08Along with a fistful of driver, he also grabbed a fistful of glass.
07:13Resist, resist, stop resisting.
07:15I reckon I might need a transfusion after that.
07:17Yeah, what am I looking at?
07:18Look at that. That is an injury on duty, if ever I've seen one.
07:23The lad, clean from green, received no further action for possession of cannabis.
07:27However, he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving without valid insurance.
07:32He received an eight-month suspended prison sentence,
07:35an 18-month driving ban and ordered to pay £337 in fines and costs.
07:41The suspected failure to stop and driving without a licence were dropped in court.
07:49I don't know about a real medal, but maybe a cup of tea and a Twix or something.
07:52I think I can manage that.
07:58Coming up...
08:00..a suspected gangland conflict...
08:03..spills onto the streets.
08:05Open the door!
08:07Get out!
08:09Get out!
08:12..and the hunt for a dangerous dog on the loose.
08:15Right, everyone stand by.
08:18It's Bullseye.
08:32Each year, more than a million plants with a street value of £210 million are seized by police.
08:39Slow, slow, slow, slow, slow.
08:41And 90% of it is grown industrially in rented flats and houses.
08:48This makes illegal weed farms a high-value target, not just for the interceptors...
08:53Three plants for two.
08:55..but for criminal gangs as well.
08:58I think the main reason for that is because there's a lot of risk involved in growing cannabis,
09:03certainly for the gangs.
09:04And I think if they have the opportunity to then go and take cannabis that other people have grown,
09:09they eliminate the risks of being caught whilst growing.
09:15They often go armed, they often go in numbers,
09:19which can incite a lot of violence towards whoever they're robbing the cannabis from.
09:27It's the Witching Hour on Wednesday morning.
09:31As they head out on shift...
09:36Word of a major robbery in progress reaches Stuart Wilson and Chris Gutteridge.
09:52Officers suspect up to a dozen people have entered the property, so it's all hands on deck.
10:01Beware of the update for this job.
10:03You've got multiple people breaking into one of the houses.
10:06Don't suppose the ARVs can come and support us at all, please?
10:10As they make for the address,
10:12there's news that several of the suspected robbers have fled and are heading their way.
10:18Three vehicles have left now and they're towards direction,
10:22so we're going to go and plot up for that.
10:25But the suspects have a big head start and have made full use of it.
10:29I mean, if they have gone this way, then they've...
10:32They've long gone.
10:33With the search area widening...
10:366-1, we've done down to Craxton. There's no trace either.
10:41Reports come in that someone has been spotted returning to the scene of the crime.
10:49We've got quite a run-in from the address.
10:53Stuart punches the REVs and makes for the address.
10:57Do you know how to get there?
10:59Yeah.
11:00While Chris calls in the cavalry to help tighten the net.
11:046-1, I think if you've got someone coming over from NK to assist,
11:07can we get them to that address? Because clearly they've made entry.
11:12Other units are already on scene.
11:15What have we got, mate?
11:16Back window smashed, sitting there with the back of the house.
11:20And reckon the bloke is now back inside the property.
11:27While officers guard the front, Stuart heads round the back.
11:31This person's in there?
11:32Yeah, someone's in there.
11:34And makes his presence known.
11:37Police officer with taser! Show yourself! Come on!
11:456-1 in the process.
11:47Police officer with taser! Show yourself!
11:52No-one's answering.
11:54So it's time to ditch the pleasantries.
11:57You've got enforcer.
11:59That's him, mate.
12:02But who needs the enforcer when you have blandy size 11s?
12:06Keep going, keep going.
12:13Watch it.
12:16Once inside...
12:18Police officer with taser! Come out now!
12:22Stuart and the team proceed with caution.
12:25Clear that, we'll clear the ground floor and then we'll go upstairs, all right?
12:30Police officer with taser! Make yourself known!
12:34There's no sign of anyone on the ground floor.
12:386-1, we've got a cannabis grove.
12:42But there are clues as to why the robbers paid a visit.
12:45It's been emptied.
12:47And what they made off with.
12:48Let's just clear this room as best we can, quick.
12:51That's relatively clear.
12:53There are two more floors to search.
12:55Police officer with taser! Show yourself!
13:00And more evidence.
13:02Plenty more.
13:04So you've got cannabis in here.
13:07Still growing.
13:11The entire property has been converted into a high-tech cannabis farm.
13:14Likely operated by a gang.
13:17So you have a grow room, you've got cables going into it.
13:21There's still no trace of the intruder.
13:24OK, so that room looks to be clear.
13:29And only one more place he could be hiding.
13:32Loft hatch.
13:36He'd be in the loft, wouldn't he? Yeah.
13:38It's up to Stuart to do the honours.
13:40If I come straight back down, I'll be in the loft.
13:42If I come straight back down, it's for a reason, right?
13:45Yeah.
13:52Stuart originally joined the Interceptors because he wanted a new challenge.
13:58And playing hide-and-seek in a giant weed farm certainly ticks the box.
14:03So I've got two discarded gloves.
14:07But the suspect is nowhere to be seen and appears to have done a runner.
14:12Well, I don't know where that mystery man's gone.
14:14He's not going to have got in there, is he?
14:16There's better news from across town.
14:25Firearms units have intercepted a golf scene during the robbery.
14:29Hello. It's pretty serious, mate.
14:32And have collared three of the suspects.
14:35So your vehicle's been seen leaving the scene of a burglary, OK?
14:42Officers suspect the three lads are also cannabis farmers.
14:46Nothing on you at all, no?
14:48Sure? You look pretty nervous, mate.
14:51Who may have harvested their rival's crop.
14:54We're looking for any articles that could be involved in this offence.
14:57Some of those articles...
15:00They've just thrown something down here. Yeah.
15:03...have been logged into nearby bushes.
15:06You've got masks, gloves, and then he's thrown...
15:13...a rechargeable torch taser.
15:16Tasers, disguised as torches, are illegal
15:20and possession alone could land you ten years in prison.
15:23Right, mate. At this moment in time, you're under arrest
15:26on suspicion of burglary and cultivation of cannabis.
15:29What?
15:31You do have a saying, if it may harm your defence,
15:33if you do not mention when questioned, some of which are later on in court,
15:35anything you do say may be given in evidence.
15:37With one crew in custody,
15:39another unit's tracked down a second vehicle seen near the cannabis farm.
15:46Get out of the car! Get out, get out, get out!
15:49And they're not going in softly.
15:51Open the door!
15:53Get off!
15:55Get on your front! On your front!
15:58Get your hands out! Hands behind your back!
16:01Behind your back, you're under arrest.
16:03Suspicion of burglary, cannabis cultivation.
16:06Where was it?
16:08Britain's cannabis market is worth over two billion pounds
16:12and the profits made fuel more crime and violence.
16:17Well, the Interceptors have nipped this suspected gangland dispute in the bud
16:22before it escalated even further.
16:24Yeah, it's a good result.
16:26The biggest result for me is at the moment we've got six people in custody,
16:29two vehicles recovered and we're on to the third vehicle now
16:32with assistance from our colleagues in Thames Valley Police over in Milton Keynes.
16:35So really, really good result.
16:37We've got some weapons recovered, some people in custody
16:39and obviously a lot of the grow which isn't going to go to some sort of criminality,
16:43whether it's them or the people they're trying to steal it from.
16:47All six men from both vehicles are currently on bail pending investigation for burglary offences
16:53and four of them are also under investigation for cannabis cultivation.
17:06The 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act bans the sale and breeding of five types of dog.
17:14Jesus Christ.
17:16If they're not registered and muzzled, owners face a large fine or even prison.
17:21Yeah, I'll say mate, he's a big bugger.
17:24He's an extra large bully dog.
17:30Dealing with these sometimes deadly animals is the job of the specialist dog handling team
17:35and their kit bag of electrified shields, dark guns and sedatives.
17:44Because of the restrictions around them, they can't be resold, they can't be rehomed.
17:48Ultimately, they just get put down, which is, you know, dead sad.
17:51You know, we're all animal lovers on the dog section.
17:54You know, obviously we all love dogs and it's horrible to see it.
17:56But, you know, I think some people don't appreciate the damage that these dogs can do.
18:02If they get hold of you and clamp down on the wrong place, you know, you're done for.
18:08And they can cause some real catastrophic injuries.
18:15It's counting down to midnight.
18:22Ash Price is on route to help another team deal with a banned dog on the loose.
18:27They've got it cornered, I think, between a garage and a house.
18:33But it's just growling at them every time they try and get near to it.
18:37So I think it's starting to be a little bit aggressive towards them.
18:42The dog is an XL bully, an animal that often lives up to its name.
18:47They've got really, really strong, powerful jaws, big muscular shape at the front.
18:52They're literally just built to cause damage.
18:57To protect members of the public, firearms officers are also on scene.
19:03I think it's trapped just in this garden down here, hopefully, still.
19:08The dog is behind a high wall.
19:10Just down there, on the right-hand side.
19:12So before hatching a plan, Ash needs a bit of help to get a visual.
19:17Do you want to stand on my knee?
19:20Yeah, I will actually, mate.
19:22Come on then, lad.
19:24Can you see over this wall, you cheeky bugger?
19:26Down by the right-hand side of the garage.
19:28Yeah, I see him.
19:30He's got no collar.
19:32He looks fairly chilled.
19:34Hello!
19:36Over the past few years, XL bullies have accounted for around half of all fatal dog attacks in the UK.
19:43I don't know if you want to just take the spray and a shield and we'll just try and get it on a lead.
19:49With armed officers primed, Ash and fellow handler Lucy approach it kitted up.
19:54And with caution.
19:56Have we got no idea where it's come from?
19:58And it's been like growling and grumbling at you when you try to get near it.
20:02When I shouted off on NK, I got told, it's a very large XL bully.
20:05Is that it grumbling?
20:07Plan A is to get the dog onto a leash.
20:11Hey, pup. What's this?
20:15But when the pair get a close look at it...
20:18It looked friendlier than that over the fence.
20:21They quickly move to plan B.
20:24I think we're just going to need to dart that.
20:27Couple of shields.
20:29Over the past five years, there's been a 60% rise in dog attacks across England and Wales.
20:34Has it got an injury?
20:36Do you see what I mean? Is that blood on it?
20:38And because of their size and strength, XL bullies are often used for illegal fights.
20:44I think it's got blood on it.
20:46You reckon?
20:48Yeah, around his neck and on his chest.
20:50Do you want me to ring Anna?
20:52Ash decides the only safe way to secure the dog is to sedate it.
20:56We've got a dog we're looking to sedate out in Broughton.
21:00Just wanted to run it past you.
21:02After getting authorisation from a vet...
21:04Looks probably high 30kgs.
21:09Lucy mixes up a tranquiliser cocktail.
21:13We're just mixing the drugs and then we're going to dart the dog from over the fence with the sedative.
21:18It clearly gets very unhappy whenever we try and get anywhere near it, so it's just the safest option.
21:23It would be kinder for the dog as well, rather than trying to get on a pole or anything like that and drag it into a van.
21:29Dogs can hear sounds four times further away than we can.
21:37And this one seems to have got wind of Ash's plan B.
21:40Right, everyone stand by because it's edging up a little bit now.
21:47Ash sets the dart gun to stun
21:53and takes aim with the red dot.
22:00Bully bullseye.
22:02It's dog darted, Luce.
22:04Are you going to dart?
22:05No, we'll give it a few minutes to see if this works.
22:08We'll just wait to see if the drug's taken effect.
22:11And then, yeah, we can go in and safely remove it.
22:14Ten minutes later...
22:16Is he sleepy?
22:18Yeah.
22:20Luce's potion seems to have worked its magic.
22:25But Ash isn't taking any chances and doubles up on protection before trying to miss.
22:30So we're getting a mega mover, which is basically a sheet with handles on it,
22:35to give us a hand carrying him, and some muzzles.
22:40So even though he's sedated, it's just like being in a bit of a sleep.
22:44You can still wake up from it.
22:46So for everyone's safety, we'll just muzzle the dog.
22:49An XL bully has a higher bite force than almost all other dog breeds.
22:54So we're getting a mega mover, which is basically a sheet with handles on it.
22:57An XL bully has a higher bite force than almost all other dog breeds.
23:03He's proper...
23:05Proper eyes rolled back asleep, isn't he?
23:08But after its dose of sedatives...
23:11All right, I'm going to give him a little poke, Luce.
23:14Yeah.
23:16This one's more pussycat than top dog.
23:19Oh, he's out of it.
23:21Since the XL bully ban came into force,
23:24tens of thousands of responsible owners have legally registered their pets.
23:32Ah, lovely.
23:34But others have just let them loose to fend for themselves.
23:38Yeah, I just want to get her neck nice so she can breathe.
23:41That'll do.
23:43After Ash checks the dog's vitals...
23:46Yep. Heartbeat's all right. Breathing's all right.
23:50It can be checked in for the night.
23:52Yeah, it's gone pretty well, to be fair.
23:55Dog's nice and asleep, safely in the cage.
23:58Now we just need to get it to the kennels.
24:05The dog was transported to the kennels for the night.
24:09Like many other banned XL bullies,
24:12if his owner doesn't claim it or prove it's registered, it'll be put down.
24:17It's obviously the last option that we want,
24:20but we've had jobs up and down the country
24:23where XL bully types and other large breed dogs
24:27have seriously injured or killed people,
24:30and we've got to have the contingency there to protect the public
24:33because of the damage that these types of dogs can cause.
24:38Coming up...
24:40Oh, okay.
24:42No easy ride.
24:43Get out of the car! Get out of the car!
24:46But this strict driver...
24:48Get out of the car!
24:50What are you probably doing?
24:52A couple of gamblers...
24:54I hope so. I'm going to have to bite this dog.
24:57Tomorrow?
24:59Find themselves bang out of luck.
25:01So we've got to pay the rest of the year for no insurance, no MOT as well.
25:14It's Tuesday night.
25:17Rob Halfleet and Charlie Brown are out looking for trouble.
25:21And trouble...
25:23Whoa-wee!
25:26...has just found them.
25:29A rogue Corsair driver has been found.
25:32And a dog has been found.
25:34And a dog has been found.
25:36And a dog has been found.
25:38And a dog has been found.
25:40And a dog has been found.
25:42A rogue Corsair driver almost clipped the Interceptor's XC60.
25:48And they're not going to let that slide.
25:51Oh, okay.
25:53You're determined.
25:55After a quick yooey, they tear after the suspect...
25:59He's not, is he?
26:01He is. He's just gone through red.
26:03...whose driving goes from bad...
26:05Yeah, he's gone through red.
26:07...to worse.
26:09Rob calls the Volvo and tries to keep the Corsair's taillights in his sights.
26:15There he is.
26:17Vehicle ahead in the distance.
26:19We are Halston Road, away from town.
26:22The suspect is doing north of 60.
26:25And the boys risk losing him in the darkness.
26:29Ten feet lost. No, no, no, no.
26:31Eyeball regained. Halston Road continuing out of town.
26:35But with conditions in their favour...
26:36Road is dry. Traffic is light. Visibility is good.
26:41Rob quickly reins him in.
26:44Approaching a roundabout. Wait.
26:47No, he's not. He's gone in it.
26:49And then clocks the Corsair heading into a housing estate.
26:53There he is, there he is, there he is, there he is.
26:59Standby. Stop, stop, stop. Cotswold Avenue.
27:02Get out of the car! Get out of the car!
27:04Get out of the car! Open the door!
27:07This bloke's hearing is as bad as his driving.
27:10Open now or the window's going in.
27:12Cotswold Avenue. It's a stop, stop.
27:14Open the door. Do it now. Get out of the car.
27:17Get out of the car. Get out of the car.
27:19You're under arrest for failing to stop.
27:21Get out!
27:23What are you doing, man?
27:25You are under arrest for failing to stop and dangerous drive.
27:30Rob and Charlie need to be sure the driver's not carrying any weapons or blades.
27:35Driver's detained. Keys are out.
27:37Brother, stop.
27:39Brother, stop.
27:41Stout enough on it.
27:43But the only thing this guy's butchering is the King's English.
27:47I'm not hurting no one.
27:49I didn't say you were hurting someone.
27:51You were hurting me.
27:53Come on over here.
27:55Stand up.
27:57What was that about?
28:00You're scaring me, bro. Stop here, man.
28:03When you've driven like you have, that's kind of the point, bro.
28:06Have you got anything on you in the car or anything else that's going to hurt me, hurt you, or you shouldn't have?
28:11No, I have not. But please, let go of me, please.
28:14The bloke is pushing his luck with Rob.
28:17Any damage?
28:19No, no.
28:21Check, check, check, check. No problem.
28:23And that's never a good idea.
28:25Stop pulling about. You have to simply stand still.
28:29I am asking you. If you're an adult, you should be able to follow the simple instruction of stand still.
28:34Why are you so aggressive?
28:36You hold. I'll search.
28:38Because you've just driven like an absolute clown through the middle of town at speed.
28:43OK.
28:45I'm trying to go home, bro.
28:47Well, you won't be going home now. You'll be going to custody.
28:50OK.
28:52Rob reckons the driver's been hitting the hard stuff.
28:55Can I put my trousers up?
28:57Listen to her.
28:59The supervisor will tell all.
29:01OK.
29:04Like many of the interceptors, Rob has little time for anyone who takes to the road over the limit.
29:11One long blow until it takes off, OK?
29:14And after a quick blow...
29:16Keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going.
29:18His suspicions are confirmed.
29:21Right, it's a reading 68, so you're further under arrest for driving a motor vehicle whilst over the prescribed limit for alcohol.
29:27OK.
29:29But it doesn't just slow your reactions.
29:31Can you let go, please?
29:33No, because you're in handcuffs. Whilst you're on your feet, in handcuffs, you're going to be held on to.
29:37It slows your brain functions.
29:39Yeah, I'm in a handcuff, so can you let me go, please?
29:42No.
29:44Have you had anything else other than alcohol this evening?
29:46No. Can you please let go of me?
29:48No.
29:50And can cause sudden mood swings.
29:52Well done. Well done, mate. Well done.
29:55Well done.
29:59If you try and start throwing your head towards me again, you're going to end up in a much worse position. Do you understand?
30:05Yes.
30:07Right. Sit in the car whilst you have the option to sit in a car rather than a van.
30:11All right. Put my trousers up before I get in or not.
30:14Booze might not be the only thing he's taken tonight.
30:17I suspect there's not only alcohol in your system.
30:19Pretty much because of your demeanour and your eyes, your pupils are just not reacting to light at all.
30:25So I'm also going to request a specimen of saliva from you, OK?
30:27What is that for?
30:29It's going to test your system for cocaine and cannabis.
30:32Using a drugs wipe should be a simple ten-second procedure.
30:36Do me a favour. Lick round the inside of your cheeks.
30:39Sorry, what?
30:41Lick round the inside of your cheeks for me.
30:43But not with this lad.
30:45Then stick your tongue out as far as you can.
30:47Just turn a little bit towards me.
30:49It's now close to midnight and Rob's patience is wearing thin.
30:53Just a little bit.
30:55I'm not touching your wrists. Right. Stick your tongue out.
30:58You need an anatomy lesson. Right, stick your tongue out.
31:01Don't be a dickhead.
31:03Well, stop acting like one and then I'll start treating you with a bit more respect.
31:06It's a two-way street. So, can you just stick your tongue out as far as you can for me?
31:10OK, sir.
31:12Stick your tongue out for me. Keep it there.
31:16Thank you very much.
31:18All right, thank you. What's your name?
31:20PC Halfley.
31:22Thank you, Halfley.
31:24You're welcome.
31:25The drugs wife comes back negative, so the bloke's got one less thing to worry about.
31:30I don't want to have problems.
31:32No, I know you don't.
31:34I've made a mistake.
31:36And we'll deal with that. Like I say, I'll deal with anyone on the level.
31:38But that's all going to change when he gets home.
31:42Go round, go round, go round.
31:44Hey, your mum's going to be pissed, was that?
31:46Well, it's...
31:48Yeah, I was just going to say, my mum's the one I fear the most, so I don't blame you.
31:53Fine.
31:57This bro pleaded guilty to drink driving, failing to stop and dangerous driving.
32:03He received an eight-week suspended prison sentence, was disqualified from driving for 12 months
32:09and was ordered to pay £439 in fines and costs.
32:15And if he does a runner, there'll be one sure way to track him down.
32:20What a plonker.
32:22That's one word for him.
32:29I've never seen anything like that before in my life,
32:32but there's no way he was going to disappear if that's true, is it?
32:41Our roads are watched over by some 18,000 ANPR cameras,
32:45scanning and collecting 80 billion records every year,
32:50weaving a web of intel designed to snare dodgy motors and deter crime.
33:00ANPR is a fantastic tool for us.
33:04Our coverage is really good within Northamptonshire,
33:08so the movement of vehicles can be monitored,
33:11and then it's our job to monitor it.
33:13It can be monitored, and then it's our job to intercept those vehicles,
33:18get them stopped and get the offences and the drivers dealt with.
33:28It's Friday morning.
33:32And parked up on a bridge above the A14...
33:35I'm through, Lane, I'm through.
33:37Go on.
33:39Rachel McCready and Stuart Wilson are on the hunt for a van.
33:43Which has been pinging cameras all along the carriageway.
33:46So the van's just gone through Lane 3.
33:49I think it's still in Lane 3. I can see it just ahead.
33:53Looked like there was two persons in there.
33:59Flooring the marked Volvo, the orange Transit is soon up ahead.
34:08After pulling in front...
34:10Rach activates the rear-facing follow me sign.
34:15Which the Transit driver doesn't argue with, and they pull over for a chat.
34:22Roads policing Rachel is an advanced driver,
34:25an expert in stopping suspects on the road.
34:28So far, this job is going like clockwork.
34:34Hiya, you OK?
34:36The reason we stopped you is the vehicle show not to have any insurance,
34:40any tax or any MOT.
34:42Oh, right.
34:44Can you prove any of them?
34:46Erm, I don't know.
34:48It's not a good start.
34:52And Stuart piles on the pressure.
34:54So no tax, no MOT, and there's no insurance shown.
34:59And also, with your seatbelt tucked behind the seat,
35:02I should imagine you weren't wearing your seatbelt either.
35:03I don't know.
35:05Checking in with HQ...
35:07Can you just do an SVI, please? A14 truck stop.
35:12Stuart learns the driver is also disqualified.
35:16And the list goes on.
35:18I think that front tyre's gone as well.
35:27Do you want to...?
35:29Yeah.
35:30Just have them for everything.
35:31You're under arrest for disqualified driving, OK?
35:33So you don't have to say anything about my harm of defence
35:35if I do not mention my own questions.
35:36Some of you are later on in court.
35:37Anything you do say may be given in evidence.
35:41OK?
35:42So we're going to further arrest you, actually, for no insurance,
35:44no MOT as well.
35:46The offences mean the driver will be taken into custody
35:49and the van seized.
35:51And, er...
35:52Can we arrange recovery for the vehicle as well, please?
35:55And his problems keep stacking up.
35:57Well, I've got a kit in the back that needs to get to this job.
36:00What is it that you've got in the back?
36:02Solar stuff.
36:04Solar stuff is tech-speak
36:06for expensive renewable energy battery systems.
36:10Where's it got to go to?
36:12To the jobs.
36:13But what part of the country are we...?
36:15Telford, Birmingham and Gloucester, I think.
36:18Right.
36:21The motor is carrying thousands of pounds' worth of kit
36:24and it will be confiscated unless Dell and Rodney
36:26can get someone to collect it.
36:29So I've got a load of kit on my van, they're going to seize the van
36:32and obviously I can't seize it with ten grand's worth of kit in the back.
36:35I don't know, I don't know what to say.
36:37It could be a costly day for this driver,
36:39but he's hoping his luck will change soon.
36:42I've had a nightmare, mate. Am I going to be released today?
36:46I don't know. It's going to be down to the sergeant.
36:48It's not going to be long. I hope so.
36:50I'm going to Vegas tomorrow.
36:51Tomorrow?
36:52I wouldn't bet on it.
36:54I'll have to leave it all then.
36:57And then you'll have to come and pick it up from the services, yeah?
37:01Rach checks the van for any suspect packages.
37:05Who's got the pony?
37:07Me.
37:08Yeah?
37:10And then another officer does the same for the driver.
37:14What the...?
37:15This boy's going to drink with us.
37:17Just to let you know, it's cold out here, all right?
37:19Leave me alone.
37:20It's all a bit of a laugh for these two jokers.
37:23Get you going.
37:24Do something funny so we get on TV.
37:28What do I do?
37:30Not that.
37:31But Stuart is not seeing the funny side.
37:34He has no regard for any of the rules of the road,
37:37the safety of any other members of the public,
37:40and he's just a selfish individual who doesn't care,
37:44and it's our job to remove these people from the road.
37:47No insurance, no M.O.T.
37:49No licence back, that's guaranteed.
37:52Yeah, I'm one of the old police interceptors.
37:54I am, but...
37:55Maybe.
37:56Hopefully.
37:58Oh, my.
37:59How do you live up to the day of all days?
38:02I don't know.
38:05Del Boy pleaded guilty to driving whilst disqualified,
38:08driving with no insurance and M.O.T.,
38:11and for having a bald tyre.
38:13He was served with a community order,
38:15banned from driving for 17 months,
38:17and ordered to pay £200 in fines and costs.
38:23Sorry, was I letting you know it's right there?
38:25Leaving Rodders to find his own way home.
38:29Terrific.
38:34Coming up...
38:36A runaway quad biker...
38:38Now, just stop for a moment.
38:40A runaway quad biker...
38:42Now, just stop for us.
38:43Runs into a whole lot of trouble.
38:46You could quite easily have been wiped out there,
38:48and either seriously injured or fatally injured.
39:03He's off, he's off, get him!
39:05Interceptors across the country are trained to deal with anything on wheels.
39:11But there's one vehicle...
39:15that causes them more headaches than most.
39:17That quad's done a red light on the wrong side of the road.
39:22Quad bikes are hard to pursue,
39:24often ridden by people with no road experience
39:27and with little thought to their safety or anyone else's.
39:32They are a nuisance,
39:33because they ride with total disregard to anybody else,
39:37pedestrians or other road units.
39:39Nine times out of ten, they're not very accomplished riders,
39:44ride without helmets, they're a danger to themselves.
39:56Friday evening in the countryside near Kettering.
40:01Riding shotgun with Sandra Payne.
40:03Is that a quad bike?
40:07Chris Lock has clocked a quad biker with no licence plate.
40:11Yes.
40:13And with no sense of left and right.
40:19After making their presence known...
40:25The lad tries to make a dash for it.
40:28Erm, we're on...
40:31But you can't outrun the law on an oversized lawnmower.
40:35No, just stop for us.
40:44Why didn't you stop?
40:45Cos I just got a bit scared, I'm sorry.
40:47OK.
40:48I got a bit scared.
40:50The quad doesn't look road legal.
40:54What's your name, young man?
40:55Er...
40:56You've got a driving licence?
40:57Er, no.
40:58And the same goes for the rider.
41:00Got insurance for it?
41:01No.
41:02Please don't answer that.
41:03Where's my girlfriend, can I tell her?
41:05Tell her you'll call her back in a second.
41:07While Locky tries to ID Casanova...
41:10It's just stopped, I'm just going to try and find
41:12some sort of identification number,
41:14see if we can establish if it's stolen or not.
41:16Sandra does the same with the quad bike.
41:19I think I've got a licence plate.
41:21I've got a licence plate.
41:23She does the same with the quad bike.
41:26I think I've got Alpha Juliet, Romeo Delta.
41:30The quad isn't registered for road use.
41:32There's a chance this bike could be stolen.
41:36Whose is it?
41:37Er, mine.
41:38So it is yours?
41:39Yeah, I just got it just a second ago.
41:41How much did you pay for it?
41:42No, it's my friend's, I just borrowed it off my friend.
41:44I was just going to ride home, it's not my bike,
41:46I just borrowed it off a friend.
41:47OK.
41:49The lad is 16 and not making a lot of sense.
41:53Sandra thinks she knows why.
41:56Your eyes look a bit spaced out.
41:58Have you used any cannabis at all today?
42:00Any other drugs?
42:01No, no, I smoked a couple of zits earlier.
42:03How about that?
42:04As a result of that, we're going to ask you
42:06to provide a drug wipe, OK?
42:09That tests for cannabis and cocaine.
42:11Yeah.
42:13Lachie checks for drugs.
42:16Beautiful, thank you very much.
42:19And Sandra...
42:20It's PC Payne from the roads policing team.
42:22..tries to check out his story.
42:24Well, if we can't confirm the ownership of the vehicle,
42:26it'll be getting seized as stolen.
42:29The owner confirms he lent it to the teen.
42:33Not illegal, but reckless and dangerous.
42:35But the problem is, is that you've given him permission,
42:38he's 16, you've given him permission
42:41to ride this quad bike to the shops,
42:44it has no insurance on it.
42:47Over 1,000 people are injured in quad bike accidents each year
42:51and given his driving, the teen was lucky not to have joined them.
42:55He's not wearing a helmet, he's on the wrong side of the road,
42:58on a blind bend, and he's really lucky
43:01we're not in a very serious collision or a fatal accident.
43:05Lachie returns with the drug wipe and the lad's luck continues.
43:10Good news, nothing in it, no cannabis there.
43:13So you've passed that.
43:15But Sandra's not letting him off so easily.
43:19Do you understand how serious it is?
43:21You're on a blind bend on the wrong side of the road
43:24with no helmet, no insurance,
43:26and you could quite easily have been wiped out there
43:29and either seriously injured or fatally injured.
43:31That's my own fault.
43:33It is, but I don't want to scrape you off the road
43:36and go and speak to people that love you and care about you.
43:39I understand. I apologise for it.
43:44Sandra is a family liaison officer
43:47and loves nothing more than spending her downtime with her kids.
43:52So dealing with this lad...
43:54I think you just need to be.
43:56..is second nature.
43:58A bit more careful. Yeah.
44:00No, no, not careful. I'm not an idiot.
44:04He seems polite enough. It's the first time I've ever met him.
44:07He seems to take it on board, he apologised for his actions.
44:10Hopefully he'll go away and just reflect and think about it
44:13and perhaps not do a similar sort of stupid thing in future.
44:16If he's going to play on a quad bike,
44:18do it in a field where it's more appropriate with the right kit.
44:24The sorry team was reported for driving without a licence or insurance
44:28and got a referral order to the youth offending team.
44:31The quad bike was seized.
44:33All right. All right, I'll see you later.
44:35Take it easy. Take care.
