02:36When a fellow sailor first sent us an email recommending this river to Riley and I, I'm
02:39not going to lie in that there was initially some hesitation on my behalf.
02:43I don't know, maybe because of the crocs that surrounded us and our children, which
02:47are perfect bite size.
02:48Then there's the mudflats, which we were bound to run aground on.
02:51And the fact that we had a 60 foot trimaran and some parts of this river got narrow.
02:55But once we arrived and were doing it, it was like all those premeditated fears of the
02:59known and unknown disappeared.
03:01And I felt right at home.
03:04The Kinabatangan River stretches over 560 kilometres.
03:08Its floodplain is one of the most exceptional ecosystems in the world.
03:12This region is not only rich in biodiversity, but also in cultural diversity.
03:16It's home to various Indigenous communities, each with their own unique traditions, languages
03:21and ways of life that have coexisted with the river's natural rhythms for generations.

13:43was the orangutan,
13:44which sadly is classified as critically endangered
13:47due to the expansion of palm oil plantations and logging.
13:50Approximately 100,000 square kilometres of Borneo's forest
13:53has been cleared since 1980.
13:55Palm oil is good at hiding in plain sight
13:57and is used by numerous big corporations
13:59for so many things we use every day
14:01like snacks, cosmetics and even biofuels.
14:03Here in Borneo, there's an urgent need for people
14:05to support conservation efforts to protect these primates
14:07and their habitats from further decline.
14:09Habitat conservation, anti-poaching measures
14:11and sustainable land use are crucial for these guys' survival.
14:14Nowadays, you even have to watch out for products
14:16whose certifications lure you
14:18into a false sense of sustainably grown palm oil,
