00:00Hey kids, what's up? Today we are learning about place value. Let's go and look at the
00:11example so we can start learning. Come on guys, let's go!
00:19Here we have what I like to think of as a place value house. This is the home of the
00:23place values. Over here we have Big Brother 100s, and in this room we have Sister 10s,
00:31and in the last room we have Baby 1s. Now in the place value house we have a rule that
00:36says we can only have one digit in each room. Remember that a digit is any number from zero
00:43to nine. In this house we can only have one number or digit in each room. That is the
00:48rule and we have to follow it. So let's look at this number and put it in the right place.
00:55Here we have the number 50. The number 50 has two digits in it. The zero is a digit
01:01and the five is a digit, so they need to be in separate rooms in the house. So let's think
01:06about how many 10s are in 50. We have five 10s that make up 50. Now how many do we have
01:14in the 1s place? We have zero, so we have zero 1s in the 1s place. Let's look at the
01:20number 50 using our place value blocks. We know that to get 50 we need five 10s, one,
01:27two, three, four, five, and zero 1s. Each one of these 10s blocks is made up of 10 1s.
01:36If I counted every individual block in these 10s blocks, we would see there are 50 of them.
01:44Now what if we move the number 5 over here in the 100s place? We cannot leave this middle
01:49room empty, so we're going to fill it with the number zero. Looking at this number, we
01:54no longer have 50 like we did before. Is this number a lot different than 50? With the five
02:02moving places, we now have 500. To show us this, let's get some 100s blocks. To get 500,
02:09we need how many 100s blocks? If you said 5, you are correct. We need 100, 200, 300,
02:19400, 500. If we compare 500 to 50, we can easily see that 500 is a lot more than 50.
02:29So a 5 in the 100s spot is a lot bigger than a 5 in the 10s spot. It's very important to
02:35pay attention to which spot the numbers are in because this changes the value of a number.
02:40Let's look at another one. This is the number 6, and it is in the 1s room. If we represent
02:46this number with blocks, we would have 6 1s blocks. So we have 6 in the 1s place, but
02:52what if we moved the 6 to the 10s place? Does that change anything? We can see the difference
02:58between the 6 in the 1s place and the 6 in the 10s place by using the blocks. Here we
03:03have the 6 1s, and here we have the 6 10s blocks. As we can see, there is a big difference
03:10between the 6 in the 1s and the 6 in the 10s. The 6 in the 10s place has a value of 60,
03:16and the 6 in the 1s place has a value of 6. Remember that we need to pay attention to
03:21what place the numbers are in. Now let's move the 6 over to the 100s spot and see if this
03:27has a different value. So can you tell me what number this is? The number is 600. Great
03:36job guys! We had the 6 in the 10s place, which gave us 60, but now it is in the 100s place,
03:42which gives us 600. Is 600 worth more than 60? It is worth more than 60. Our blocks can
03:50show us this. Each of these 100s blocks represent 100 of the 1s blocks and 10 of the 10s blocks.
03:58Having the 6 in the 100s place is definitely a lot bigger than a 6 in the 10s place. We
04:04have time for just one more number to look at. In this one we have two digits. This is
04:09the number 27. To look at this number, with the blocks we would have how many 10s blocks?
04:16Two 10s blocks. Correct. How many 1s blocks? We have 7 1s blocks. Good job! We have 2 in
04:24the 10s place and 7 in the 1s place, which gives us 27. But what if we move these numbers
04:31over to the next room? Let's do that and see what we have. We no longer have 27. What
04:38number is this? We have the number 2 in the 10s place. Correct. How many 1s blocks? We
04:46have 270. Is the value of 270 bigger than 27? Yes, it is a lot bigger and we can see
04:55that with the blocks. To get the 2 in the 100s place we need 200s blocks and to get
05:02the 7 in the 10s place we need 7 10s blocks and we have 0 in the 1s place. So remember
05:09that when the numbers are in different places they have different values and knowing this
05:14will help you understand the difference between large and small numbers. Thanks for watching
05:18guys. We will see you next time.
