00:00Welcome to the Skinny Jungle Roar Bengals post game pod for September 15th.
00:06We are certainly high atop the GEHA field at Arrowhead stadium press box.
00:13I'm actually in one coach's box, the Kansas city chiefs coach's box.
00:18Skinny is next door, believe it or not.
00:21And, uh, we are here to break down what was as skinny as Zach Taylor
00:25immediately after the game, a gut punch of a loss, 26, 25, last second field
00:30goal to 51 yards by Harrison Butker.
00:33Uh, really skinny.
00:35You asked the question right after the game, and I will ask your impression
00:39on what you thought of Zach Taylor's comments in terms of losing this
00:44game, but the fight, the Bengals show.
00:46Yeah.
00:47And I think they did Mike.
00:48And I think again, every loss stinks, right?
00:50Because you get 17 chances and the number of wins and losses determines
00:54whether or not you make the playoffs.
00:55And here you are again in an O and two hole.
00:58And you played lots of spurts of this game well enough to win
01:01on both sides of the football.
01:03Um, you have McPherson did miss an extra point, but he also kicked four field goals.
01:06Um, so you could even maybe chime a little special teams into that mix as well.
01:10And yet you still found a way to lose.
01:11And I think that was the gut punch portion of me.
01:14You know, this team's been through this before.
01:15Um, it's, it's bounced back.
01:17Uh, the thing that's concerning moving forward continues to be health.
01:20Now the health of the defensive interior defensive line, especially.
01:24But I did think that they, I think they sorted and figured some things out.
01:28Like there's no T Higgins and we don't really have a dynamic second options.
01:32Andre Oshabash is a nice player and he had a couple of TVs today.
01:35And I thought he, he filled in well and he did hit a home run ball to Jermaine
01:38Burton, but you don't have a viable, consistent second option.
01:41So they decided to lean into the tight ends and the tight ends I
01:44thought really came through for them.
01:45And maybe that's something more that they can hang their hat on moving
01:48forward, because if Jamar chase is the only weapon out there and you hope
01:51T Higgins is back sooner rather than later to add the second big time weapon.
01:55But if he is, defenses are just going to scheme against that.
01:57So you better lean somewhere else.
01:59And in the opener, the wide receivers didn't get it done.
02:01Five catches for 37 yards today.
02:03I thought they did a good job to lean into the tight ends, but Mike, I think
02:06this team, and I think you see it right now because of injuries, personnel,
02:10whatever other reasons there are at this moment, I'm not telling you, this is
02:13the whole season, but at this moment, the margin for error is so slim and.
02:19You, it, it allows you to lose to an inferior opponent like they did against
02:23new England because of a fumble going in the end zone, a botched punt that leads
02:26the three and then today, a couple of costly penalties and maybe not finishing
02:30out a couple of drives with touchdowns rather than field goals.
02:33All right.
02:34I think aside from creating the three turnovers against the best quarterback
02:39in football that you did, uh, intercepting him twice and forcing a fumble.
02:44Uh, Zach Taylor said last week, he wanted to get into the business of
02:47turning the ball over, uh, of the opponent and winning the turnover battle.
02:52The Bengals did that today, 3-1, even though the one for Kansas city was a
02:5638 yard scoop and score off a Burrow fumble.
02:59All of that being said, I think the number one positive to come from
03:02this game was the way Joe Burrow looked.
03:05It looked like Joe Burrow was Joe Burrow back in the
03:08pocket, dissecting the defense.
03:10There was, I believe it was a 19 to 22 yard out pattern.
03:14He threw to Eric all that was a thing of beauty for a first down to me, passes
03:20like that, show me that Joe Burrow is back.
03:24I thought the deep ball to Jermaine Burton was a good ball.
03:26It wasn't perfect.
03:27It wasn't laid totally out there for Jermaine to just run under it and
03:31score a touchdown and Jermaine had separation, but he also didn't have
03:33enough saturation separation to where he caught it and could then race
03:36past the guy to the end zone.
03:38Right.
03:38Um, I thought that was a good throw too.
03:40And that obviously was a huge question coming out of last week.
03:43So yeah, I mean, from week one to wondering, man, is this all this is
03:47and dink and dunk, and that's all he can do to week two and watching him
03:50rip some throws and, and spread the ball around and make the tough throws
03:53that good quarterbacks have to make.
03:55I think that was a positive step as well.
03:57Burrow 23 of 36 here on Sunday, 258 yards.
04:02He was sacked three times for a loss of 12 yards, but he threw the two
04:06touchdowns and he wasn't interception.
04:08A quarterback rating North of a hundred at one Oh 3.7.
04:13And, you know, I was not in there for Joe Burrow.
04:16I was working in the locker room, but you were in for Joe Burrow.
04:19And what did he have to say?
04:21And what was his mood?
04:23Because in the locker room, there was a lot of frustration.
04:26There was a lot of disappointment, but there was this sense of, okay, we
04:30kind of got our bearings a little bit more.
04:32I'm curious to hear what Joe Burrow had to say about that and Jamar chase.
04:37Yeah.
04:37I thought he, I thought, you know, he talked about the team putting up a good
04:40fight and I think the, he even said that was a positive, but I'm not sure I've
04:43seen him as despondent after a loss is this one, Mike, um, and I, and I'm trying
04:48to, I, I don't want to play amateur psychologist, but it makes me wonder if
04:52he understands that the margin for error is so small and wins like today are ones
04:57that are hard to come by and we should have come by it and we didn't come by it.
05:01And that just puts us further behind of trying to dig out of another hole.
05:04And to some degree, you know, maybe he looks and goes, you know, that it felt
05:10so easy, maybe to get to that super bowl the first time and without, you know,
05:15with all the guys come back, we're going to get there again.
05:18Right.
05:18And then it starts to sink in of, man, this is, it's really hard to do that.
05:21And, um, you know, if things aren't going perfectly well for us, we're,
05:25we're, you know, we're in some trouble and we got some injuries.
05:27It just, his mood was one of, I thought the spondency at the same time, though,
05:32the upbeat part of we played better, um, not good enough, those kinds of things,
05:36but, um, you know, the guys fought against a good team.
05:39We always have a good fight against this team.
05:40The chiefs, I thought there were, there were parts good and bad to his, his mode,
05:45but I can't, I've never, I just have never seen him as despondent after
05:48a loss, to be honest with you.

07:19It's guaranteed prize picks run your game.
07:23I think it's starting to weigh on him a little bit.
07:26And I think we need to get to the whole Jamar chase thing.
07:30Do we have a Jamar chase problem?
07:33And, you know, we kind of pooh poohed it in, in training
07:36camp when he didn't practice.
07:38I didn't play in the preseason, obviously.
07:41And Jamar was just playing the game, the contract game.
07:44And we kind of assumed that this would come to an ahead and the Bengals
07:49would get the deal done with Jamar.
07:50I think a lot of people mistakenly, including myself, were under that
07:55impression under that assumption.
07:57And that's not the way it's played out.
07:59And Jamar is getting, you can tell Jamar is ticked off.
08:02He's playing angry.
08:04He's not getting open as much with T Higgins starting the season injured.
08:08And then today, late in the fourth quarter, as the Bengals are driving
08:13down the field, trailing 23, 22, there's a situation where a ball
08:19gets thrown to him, a completion and Trent McDuffie brings him to the ground.
08:24Now, what I initially thought watching it live is, oh, he grabbed his face
08:28mask and he's getting all upset come to find out, I think he was more upset
08:34after the reports of the Adam Schefter $50 million insurance policy.
08:39If that is true, he doesn't want to get hurt.
08:42And was that a hip drop tackle?
08:45Yeah.
08:45So I ended up not writing a column about that.
08:47I'm writing a column about, you know, kind of the overall feel after this game,
08:51but I did write a news story around that.
08:52And we had our own, uh, our, our PFW, uh, you, you guys have changed the vice
08:56presidency, presidency role, but, but Ben baby did the pool report
08:59with the referee, Alex Kemp.
09:02Um, and so let's unpack that.
09:04Cause I think that's your initial pack there.
09:06Yeah.
09:06To, to, to your initial question of, do we have a Jamar chase problem?
09:09I think we do and we don't, but let's stem from this.
09:11So he, he, he actually, Alex Kemp said, you know, he came up
09:15thinking it was a hip drop tackle.
09:17We told him it wasn't at that point, his language got over the top.
09:19We're not going to stand for that.
09:20Hence came the flat.
09:22And I think that that was the culmination of all of his frustration of, I don't
09:27want to get hurt and cost myself big time money and I can get hurt with a hip drop
09:30tackle and the league has told us, well, we're trying to put an emphasis on the
09:33hip truck now, I don't know if it was, or wasn't the official didn't see it as such.
09:36Maybe we'll find out in a couple of days, you know, the legal say, yeah,
09:39man, it was probably a hip drop tackle.
09:41I don't know that for a fact, but I think that was the culmination of
09:43everything of a, he thought it was a hip drop B that hip drop could have hurt me
09:48and could have maybe ended my career.
09:49Yeah.
09:50You know, it was good or could have at least cost me some money.
09:52Um, I'm, I'm being double covered and, and, and clouded on almost every play.
09:57And so I'm not getting the, the, the, the one I normally get and the contract
10:00situation still has to weigh on him and be frustrated no matter what he says,
10:04or anyone else says, and I just thought that was a culmination of
10:07all of that in one fell swoop.
10:11And the fact that Jamar didn't want to address it after the game.
10:15And I, I think that's strategic because I don't think he wants to get fined anymore.
10:20I don't think he wants to come off having it sound like he's talking about himself,
10:25where a play like that kind of comes off as looking selfish, get, you know,
10:30costing the team 15 yards in a critical situation.
10:34Mike, it turned a third and seven, which I'm not, it wasn't an automatic.
10:37They were going to make the third and seven, but they had a third and seven on
10:40the 30, um, already obviously in field goal range at that point.
10:44And you've got a third and seven to try to continue the drive.
10:46You continue that drive with a touchdown.
10:48Guess what Kansas city would had to do at the end of the game
10:50instead of kick a field goal.
10:51And they would have played with different tempo, different pace, all of those things.
10:53I fully will give you that part of it.
10:55They were playing for a field goal, but they would have had to go
10:58ahead and go score a touchdown.
10:59And so it is a selfish penalty to, to a large degree, because then it
11:02becomes four or third and 22 at the 45.
11:05Bengals have to just make a play to get it back to field goal range, which they
11:08did and, and McPherson kicks the long field goal to give them the lead.
11:11But again, to the point of where I do think it's a completely selfish thing.
11:14I do get, I think it was the culmination of all the frustration of dude almost
11:19hurt me if I get hurt, it's going to cost me and I'm playing on this $1 million.
11:23Um, salary this year, he got a roster bonus, but that's literally
11:26what his salary is for this year.
11:28And, and, you know, I'm, I'm not, I don't want to risk the, I just thought
11:31it was the culmination of all of that.
11:34Because apparently, you know, players get away with a lot
11:37of language with referees, right?
11:38They know it's just, it's the emotions of the sport, but the way Alex
11:41Kent made it sound was this was just so far over the top.
11:43He had no choice, but to penalize him.
11:45And you know what, in reading some of the comments online, the reaction from
11:50fans, which is, you know, part of our business, we understand fans get very
11:54emotional after a game like this.
11:56They're upset.
11:57Many of them that Jamar didn't apologize for costing the team 15 yards and saying,
12:03Hey, look, I can't cost the team yardage there, and I can't cost the team four
12:08points, let's say we got the field goal, but could have had the touchdown.
12:12Mike, you know, another, um, and it goes back to last week's game.
12:16Cause it really got kind of under reported because it really wasn't a
12:19storyline of the game and it didn't affect it, but the play where Jamar
12:22walks off the field as, as the, you know, the, the, the, there's a punt
12:26getting ready to take place.
12:28Um, you know, that, that, that cost them something in that case.
12:32And, um, you know, who, who knows what, again, it didn't affect the
12:37direct outcome of the game, but it was a penalty on him because he chose
12:40instead of the hustle off the field to just walk off the field.
12:43That's a problem.
12:45Well, and, and when he was asked about it after the game, he said, well, you
12:49just answered your own question.
12:50I didn't get off the field instead of saying, you know, I can't do that.
12:54I got to hustle off the field there.
12:57There's something really, really bothering Jamar Chase.
13:01And normally in years past, I'd say, great.
13:04That's an edge.
13:05I even said it on Thursday when Jamar came out and said, we are still the team to
13:10beat and that message fans need to understand this, that was not directed
13:16toward the Kansas city chiefs that was directed to the rest of the Cincinnati
13:20Bengals in the locker room and the receiver room.
13:24Yeah.
13:24I think so too.
13:25I think it was, was more of, um, trying to spark some confidence if
13:29there wasn't, wasn't confidence there.
13:31Um, I listen, I'm not a big talk trash guy.
13:34I never have been, and I'm certainly too old for today.
13:37I thought Zach Taylor answered the question with us on Friday when we
13:40talked to him of, of, and I think he was, his was more directed at Cam
13:42Taylor Brits of, yeah, I don't mind guys being confident and it put hard
13:45work and all that, I just don't want it directed at another player, which
13:48cams was, it was directed at Xavier worthy.
13:50Um, Jamar's was not, it was just a general comment that we're still, we
13:53still think we're the best team in the AFC.
13:55Well, fine.
13:55I, I, I got no problem with that.
13:57I think it's, I don't know if it needs to be said, but the fact it was, that's
14:01fine if you believe that, and it makes your teammates want to believe that
14:04and helps you guys, cause that's all that matters doesn't matter what any
14:06of us think or fans think of that.
14:08If it helps you, um, play with an edge and play, play better and play with
14:12whatever, more passion, more energy, however you want to phrase it, then
14:15that's, I'm fine with that, but yeah, today you can't get that penalty, man.
14:19I mean, you just can't, I don't care how mad you are, how much
14:21you thought it was a hip drop.
14:22The official told you it's not a hip drop.
14:24You just have to walk away and you could tell Burrow tried to deescalate.
14:28They even said, I tried to deescalate that.
14:30And when he got there about the split second, he got there
14:33is when the flag went up.
14:34So Joe couldn't get there fast enough to deescalate it.
14:37Do you think Joe Burrow needs to have a heart to heart with his buddy Jamar?
14:41I don't think it would hurt.
14:42Um, somebody does, because again, I, there is a part of me that, that I've
14:48told you, as I've written the column about it, but I see both sides
14:50of this contract situation.
14:52But, you know, when you get what he thought was hip drop tackled and I
14:57don't think it would be catastrophic from a career ending, but it could
15:00be a season ending and then that maybe costs you money in negotiations.
15:04Right.
15:04And yeah, if it's true that he took out insurance policy, it's
15:07a very wise decision to do.
15:08I would think a $50 million insurance policy would give you some level of peace
15:11of mind, maybe not as much as a hundred million dollars guaranteed double that.
15:15And, and the fact that you can still play on that.
15:18Um, but I, I think he's, I think he's very, very frustrated at the moment.
15:21And somebody needs to just calm him down a little bit.
15:25What did you think of the game?
15:26Trey Hendrickson had, he had the two sacks, I believe had three, uh,
15:31tackles for losses, illegal hands of the face against him as well.
15:36Yep.
15:36He had an illegal hands to the face, uh, uh, late in that, I believe on that
15:40last drive before the fourth down.
15:43And, um, I thought Trey Hendrickson had one of his best games as a bank
15:47had the Bengals won that game.
15:50He's had a lot of great games in a Bengal uniform.
15:53That would be in the top three.
15:54Certainly.
15:55Yeah, he was really unblockable.
15:56Um, they had to change tackles out.
15:58I was surprised they didn't give as much help over there on him.
16:02And I think some of today, while I do credit the second, I thought the
16:05secondary did a really nice job overall.
16:07Obviously cam Taylor, but got a beat on the deep ball to Rishi rice.
16:10Um, but that, that happens in this league.
16:12But I think some of the coverage, if you will, by the secondary was
16:16because Pat Mahomes didn't have a lot of time to, to scan the field.
16:19Now he certainly bought some time with his scrambling ability.
16:22Uh, but even as elusive as he is to your point, I mean, Trey got two
16:24sacks and forced a 10 yard penalty.
16:26That's a pretty good day's work.
16:28What did you think of the last play?
16:31We have to get to this now.
16:32Dejan Anthony clearly got to Rishi rice early.
16:36I don't think there's any question of that.
16:38Was he allowed to play the ball?
16:40Well, yes, but you can't go right through the receiver to play the ball.
16:44I, I don't really have a big problem with that.
16:47Yeah, problem I have is what happened behind the play.
16:50Skinny replay clearly shows at least two Bengals being tackled as Patrick Mahomes
16:58was scrambling to throw the ball downfield on fourth and 16 from his 35.
17:03Yeah.
17:03And officials feel, feel like they're, it feels like they don't throw that flag.
17:07I don't know why.
17:08I don't know if it's, yeah, let's, we're going to fourth down.
17:10We're going to let the, the, it's like the NBA thing, right?
17:12We're going to, I was passing.
17:13We're going to let the players decide this, unless it's so
17:15egregious that we can, that we have to, you know what I'm saying though?
17:20I think that's where they stay.
17:21We'll let the players decide this.
17:23Um, and then you can also argue if that's the case, then it was
17:26Dajon Anthony's, you know, contact enough to, to, to be a penalty.
17:30I thought it was, I think you like, to your point, you thought it was.
17:32He, he, he came through the receiver.
17:35I think the big question is this, and I know maybe there
17:38weren't a ton of other options.
17:39Kid played three snaps in the game, two other snaps than this.
17:42So he obviously wasn't much in the defensive game plan.
17:45I thought he would have been, I thought he, they may use him a little
17:47bit as a Travis Kelsey guy, um, see what that looked like.
17:50And they didn't, but in the most critical time of the game, you're
17:53putting a rookie seventh round pick on the field on that play.
17:57Are you really
17:58Mike Petralia tracks here, host of the jungle war and code
18:02reds podcasts on CLNS media.
18:05Well, there is nothing quite like the thrill and excitement of taking in
18:08a football game live and in person.
18:11Some of my favorite memories when I was growing up was when my dad
18:14would take me to a Miami of Ohio game at Miami field or UC
18:19game at Nippert stadium.

21:07Yeah.
21:08I mean, I think that that we are going to have to, you know, ask
21:11Lou Anarumo that this week when he meets with reporters, what his thinking
21:16was, uh, in that particular situation, maybe he just thought that Dajon
21:21brings more speed and let's say he does.
21:24He, I, he, I think he does.
21:25I think he's a great athlete.
21:26And listen, I did a story on him back in OTAs.
21:29Cause I find his story, you know, fascinating.
21:31His, his journey to the NFL from small college walk on to little
21:34used division one, you know, player to all of a sudden starting in SEC
21:38school and Ole Miss, it's a fascinating story and it's a great story of the
21:41things he's overcome to make a team and make the NFL and I do think
21:44there's a lot of upside with him.
21:46I think we saw it in camp, but Mike, you can certainly correct me if I'm wrong,
21:49but I think you'll agree with this.
21:50You also saw a lot of reckless plays from Dajon Anthony in camp, right?
21:53I mean, there were, there were moments like this one where he
21:55just gets reckless at times.
21:56And some of that I think is what's got him to where he is to making a team.
21:59As you see him make plays and you, and you think, all right, we can
22:02coach some of this out of him.
22:04And I think they can, but in the most critical moment of this game, you're
22:08going to, you're going to have him make, try to make that play, knowing
22:11how reckless he can be, and it ends up being a reckless play.
22:14I, I get, he was trying to make a play on the ball.
22:18It was reckless.
22:18I mean, it almost looks like, okay, here comes the ball.
22:22I'm doing whatever I need to do.
22:23Even if I go right through the receiver to get the ball and I'm like, that's
22:27not the way you play that play.
22:30Yeah, no, I would agree with that.
22:31And that's, it's unfortunate.
22:33Um, he was not made available to us after the game.
22:36He was despondent.
22:37And I, I, again, I feel for guys in that situation.
22:39Yeah, I don't have a problem with that either.
22:42Um, but, um, somebody needs to answer for that play.
22:46Okay.
22:47I'm going to go back to the offensive side of the ball here, uh, skinny, and
22:51ask you a question as to why Charlie Jones didn't get targeted in this game.
22:56Are you at all surprised by that?
22:59I, I just think it's, it's Charlie still is having a hard time understanding
23:03the nuance of, of what it means to play in the slot when he plays in the slot.
23:06I think that was a big point of emphasis last year that he just didn't quite
23:11have the nuance that a Tyler Boyd did.
23:13And then the injury set him back a little bit too.
23:15I do wonder, unfortunately, because there's opportunity there for all
23:19those young receivers, um, and even Trenton Irwin, who's not a young
23:22receiver, he's been around the league.
23:23There's opportunities for those guys because not only trying
23:26to fill a Tyler Boyd spot.
23:27You're trying to fill the first two games, the T Higgins spot.
23:30And I go back to, I think Andre Yoshivash is a serviceable player.
23:34I think, you know, you, he, he does some really good things really well.
23:38I think he's, he is just a really good red zone target for whatever reason.
23:41And he understands the, he understands the nuance, like the touchdown,
23:44not the one at the pylon.
23:45Hey, funny boy, was he made a great athletic play at the pylon?
23:48And then he made, you know, kind of a reverse pivot on the second
23:50touchdown on the fourth downplay to, to break into the open area and Joe
23:54Burrow find him and Joe Burrow trusts him.
23:56But again, even when you look at Yoshi, that the numbers
23:59aren't huge for what he did.
24:00I mean, he went, there's only two catches, two catches for seven yards.
24:03Yeah.
24:03And that was it.
24:04And it was a big tight end day, which I, I liked, and I'm sure
24:07we're going to get to in a second, but I think it shows you the right now.
24:10You know, they, they ran Jermaine Burke out there for a few plays.
24:12Um, put him on some nine routes.
24:14Cause it seems like that's probably all he understands what to do right now,
24:16but he did hit a home run and maybe moving forward, you pick your spots
24:20with him more, but I do think they need to find a way to get something
24:23more out of Charlie Jones.
24:24I'm not here to tell you that this is on the coaching staff that he wasn't
24:27targeted nor Joe Burrow tells me that Charlie Jones can't get on the field
24:31cause they don't trust him and he doesn't get open enough.
24:33All right.
24:34You mentioned the tight ends.
24:36We had, um, Mark down here, Mike Kosicki, seven catches, nine targets, 91 yards.
24:43The, the targets, the receptions and the yardage, all team highs in this game.
24:50So Mike Kosicki does have a breakout game, uh, for the Bengals here on Sunday
24:55afternoon, he had a terrific catch.
24:58I believe it was on fourth down, uh, where he, uh, flared open, uh, into the
25:03right flat and burrow found them.
25:05And it was a 36 yard gain, I believe down to the 37, but yeah,
25:09down to the six yard line.
25:10Yeah.
25:10I'm to the six.
25:11Uh, but that was a fourth down conversion.
25:14Uh, Eric all who I'm becoming a bigger and bigger fan of watching play every
25:19week, and I think the Bengals coaching staff is as well, he caught all four
25:23passes that were targeted to him.
25:2532 yards, including maybe burrow's second best throw of the, of the day.
25:30And I think we talked about this earlier where he threw a 19 yard out.
25:34Yeah, I know.
25:35Yeah.
25:35You mentioned that throw, but I'm glad you brought this up because I thought
25:37he was a nice soft handed catch too.
25:39Cause he kind of extended his hands and he was going to the sideline and it
25:42looked, he looked very natural, like a wide receiver catching that ball.
25:46Um, and Mike, I do wonder this, even when T comes back, cause again, I'm not sure
25:51there's a clear cut number three receiver right now.
25:53And I, I lump Yoshi into that.
25:54I think he's more rotational piece.
25:56Who's having to play by default.
25:59I know they don't want to do this, although they did it more today.
26:03I mean, maybe you have to go to more 12 personnel, play two tight ends, whether
26:06it's, you know, all's kind of an all around guy for lack of a better term.
26:10He's probably the best three down tight end.
26:11They've got, um, you know, gets sick.
26:13He is a, obviously a terrific receiver.
26:15I think you saw him more in that role today.
26:17Um, you know, drew sample has his niche.
26:19He had a couple of nice check down plays.
26:21I think he ended up with three catches in the first half today.
26:24Um, you know, maybe you do lean into that tight end room more.
26:26Maybe that does help your offensive role.
26:30This team has to win at the line of scrimmage.
26:33And that adds that mix that adds to that mix.
26:35Right.
26:35And, uh, another big body in the lineup, by the way, the third tight
26:39end that I did not mention drew sample had three catches on three targets
26:44for 28 yards.
26:45Um, but fans are going to remember.
26:47And I know some of us in the press box noted that one pass that Mike
26:51is sick, he dropped, and I thought initially it was in the sun hit.
26:55It was right here.
26:56It was a perfect pass from bro.
26:58You can be seven of nine, but on the critical catches you need to make, you
27:03need to make those critical catches.
27:05And you're sick.
27:06He didn't make that one.
27:07No question.
27:07But I do think that I think today was a good step in the right direction to
27:11see them say, you know what?
27:12We just don't have the guys at wide receiver right now.
27:16Not what about, Oh, go ahead.
27:18Yeah.
27:18I was saying not to say that maybe some, somebody evolves and you get
27:21T back and that certainly helps.
27:23But I think, I just don't think they have that.
27:25And I think they're, they're, they're starting to go.
27:26All right.
27:27We do have a bunch of tight ends.
27:27We like, let's start throwing the ball to them more.
27:29You know, one reason, a lot of Bengals fans and the coaches for that
27:33matter, love cam Taylor Britt is he has the memory of a net that he
27:40does, he gave up the touchdown, the 44 yarder to receive rice.
27:44He got beat and, uh, got beat down the sideline.
27:48His fundamentals, his mechanics were off.
27:50He acknowledged that to us after the game in front of his locker,
27:53he learned from that and he said, you know, you can have a short
27:56memory and have no memory, but you need to learn from mistakes.
27:59So on the, um, play in the third quarter, he makes one of the most
28:04spectacular interceptions you will see a Bengal player, make one
28:09handed back to Xavier worthy, who we can get into that a little
28:13bit, touch on it in your answer.
28:15But, um, we know he said, yeah, I'm going to body him up because
28:18that's what you need to do it all.
28:19And he's got one skill and I'm not going to let him do that.
28:22Paraphrasing, but he made the one handed interception.
28:25He, it was the same route.
28:27Cam Taylor Britt told us after the same route and he learned
28:31from it and made the interception.
28:33Yeah.
28:33Different player, obviously Rishi rice, but Xavier worthy is technically
28:36straight line faster in the four, two, one at the combine.
28:39Um, uh, he backed up his words.
28:41I mean, you, I'm sure cheese fans were probably laughing out loud when
28:45Rishi rice beat him for the touchdown.
28:46And again, they probably deserve in that moment to go, huh?
28:48See big mouth.
28:49We gotcha.
28:50Um, and they did.
28:51And, and he also talked about the past Mahomes through where it's like, you
28:54just don't know if he's going to throw that, but then you learn that, yeah,
28:56he is going to let that thing fly.
28:57And it was a, I mean, honestly, when the ball was initially thrown, I did see
29:01Rishi rice had a little separation, but I thought cam was catching up.
29:03And I, when he reached up, I couldn't tell an issue.
29:06I thought he caught it himself for an interception.
29:08Then all of a sudden you say Rishi rice is going to the end zone.
29:11Um, I mean, that was just a beautiful throw, but to your point, uh, cam's
29:14really honest and admitted, admitted that, yeah, you're right.
29:16It, I didn't do my technique.
29:17Right.
29:17He got by me.
29:18Guy makes great throw, but the one against worthy, he was, he was in phase.
29:23Um, he had worthy blanketed.
29:24He was running stride for stride and then to make the spectacular catch.
29:28And based on what he said about Xavier worthy, he didn't
29:31say it about the other guys.
29:32He said it about worthy kid had two catches for 17 yards.
29:36So he did what he said he was going to do.
29:38He did.
29:38And I just think, yes, Dejan Anthony had that, uh, moment.
29:44He'd like to forget, uh, cost the Bengals the game sort of kinda like what
29:50happened with, um, Joseph Osai here on the same field in the 22 championship,
29:55but not really, I mean, that was a personal foul, this was just a penalty
29:59that, uh, he committed in, in the open field and it led to still a game
30:03winning Harrison Butker field goal.
30:05Uh, but I think the Bengals did show us something here on Sunday and it did
30:11have the vibes to me of Dallas two years ago, they lose on the last play of the
30:17game, a field goal, uh, at that point.
30:20And they lose in Dallas 20 to 17 after they had come back, I think from being
30:2414 down or 14, nothing down.
30:28Yeah.
30:28Might've been 17, three years old.
30:29It was definitely 14, nothing.
30:30I remember.
30:31And, uh, they showed character in that game.
30:33I think they showed character here today.
30:35Skinny.
30:35Yeah.
30:35And I think again, the other part to it, and I think it mixed and
30:38matched with, with the pass rush.
30:39But you know, last week it's Kobe Brissette and pedestrian receivers
30:43and they didn't do much and you weren't expecting them to do much.
30:45So how much can you see what the secondary of the Bengals did today?
30:48I mean, Pat Mahomes threw for 151 yards today.
30:51Pat Mahomes threw for 151 yards today.
30:53Average six yards per attempt, which is extraordinary low by NFL standards
30:57and average do doing my math here real quick, Mike, 8.4 yards per completion.
31:02Um, and, and honestly take out the 44 yarder and it was 17 for 107.
31:07Otherwise correct.
31:08And I think that tells you that the Vaughn Belgino stone thing, because
31:13the touchdown pass to rice, um, Vaughn Bell was running the hash, but
31:18he was responsible for a player.
31:19I think Travis Kelsey kind of held him on that hash.
31:22Um, and so he couldn't get over to help, you know, maybe that secondary
31:25responsibility was for him to help, but that ball was so far towards the sideline.
31:29He was never going to get there, but Mike, take that away.
31:31And you can't do it, but just take that away for a second.
31:34The longest, next longest completion was 16 yards.
31:36I think the longest completion last week for, for new England was 17 yards.
31:40Um, they gave up an explosive.
31:41I get that and you hope to not give up any, but they're, they're not giving
31:44up hardly anything in that department.
31:46I think it's a huge step forward.
31:48I think the biggest issue now, the Bengals face between now and eight
31:52days when they play Washington, the mental, but I think beyond that, they've
31:59got to find defensive tackles skinny.
32:01Oh boy.
32:01I mean, uh, at the end of that game, no Sheldon Rankins, no BJ Hill.
32:06You're already down McKinley Jackson.
32:07You're down.
32:08Chris Jenkins.
32:08That was supposed to be the four man rotation.
32:10Well, that was supposed to be the four man rotation.
32:12I mean, if in a perfect world, this is no knock Zach Carter would not be up on game
32:17day, Jay to failure would not be up on game day and they're the ones that they
32:20kind of mix the match because they put Hubbard inside some, um, just because
32:24they were, they were desperate.
32:25I mean, you're down to your fifth and sixth tackles for goodness sakes.
32:28And that's a, that's a tough place to be.
32:29You would hope that, you know, there was some hope that Chris was going
32:32to be able to play this week.
32:33Last week when he had the surgery, I don't think anybody really believed
32:36that was feasible in a week to come back from thumb surgery, but, you know,
32:39maybe with, with it being a Monday game and an extra day, um, you know, you're
32:44talking another eight days of healing process that he can go, but, um, that's
32:47just one guy, McKinley Jackson is not coming back for that game because he's
32:50still on injured reserve, um, and both BJ Hill and Sheldon Rankins are dealing
32:55with hamstrings and, you know, we see T Higgins, it's now two weeks and it,
32:59we're not guaranteed he plays against Washington because of the hamstring
33:02and everybody, every, you know, every hamstring injury is different.
33:04Right.
33:04I mean, they're, they're not a vacuum, but, uh, both dealing with hamstrings.
33:08And so, yeah, and I don't know where you find, I mean, I guess off the
33:11practice squad, uh, but you're in a real tough spot, um, especially against
33:15the team that Washington ran the ball really well today against the New York giants.
33:19Well, that's it.
33:20Uh, it sets me up for my final point, skinny, and we'll wrap it up with this.
33:25Bengals play like they did this in this game against Kansas city, against
33:30Washington and Carolina, they should be two and two, they should be able to
33:35take care of business, get back to break even, and then we go from there.
33:39They play like they played today and get a few more healthy bodies back.
33:43And I know in this league, that's a big if, cause it could go the exact opposite
33:46way, but if they get bodies back, that should be getting back by the, if they
33:50play the way they did today, they beat Baltimore to Mike, and then you're three
33:53and two, and you would have given Baltimore a third loss and you still
33:56got two more cracks at Pittsburgh.
33:57You still got two more cracks at Cleveland.
33:59Um, as much as this, this stinks again, three and two after Baltimore would,
34:04would, would not be, uh, yeah, that's not asking for the moon.
34:07Right.
34:08And, and I think if that was the case and they play the way they did today, leading
34:11up to that, I think you'd feel good about the final 12 games and you get T Higgins
34:16back, I think, you know, absolutely positively have to get T back to be
34:22needs to be.
34:23And then for that Baltimore game, Mike, unless there's setbacks, you get
34:26Miles Murphy back, you know, maybe McKinley Jackson back again, Chris
34:29Perkins, Chris Jenkins thumb is going to be even further healed by that point.
34:33Um, so yeah, you even get some other parts back that I think would be big.
34:36So yeah, yeah.
34:37I mean, the, today was one of those ones where you had a chance to right the
34:41wrong from what you did last week.
34:43Right.
34:44Where I think all of us truly believe they one-on-one come out of Kansas city.
34:47You're fine.
34:47Well, you had a golden opportunity to still be one-on-one coming out of Kansas city.
34:51That's why I asked the question about the gut punch.
34:53Cause that's what it felt like.
34:53Like, man, you're on the doorstep of right.
34:55And you're wrong from last week and doing it in a manner of playing pretty
34:58well, and you missed the opportunity.
35:01Oh, what's up on local 12 post game.
35:03Well, we got, uh, both the Zach Taylor press conference, the
35:05Joe burrow press conference.
35:06I wrote a story with the pool report on, on the, uh, Jamar chase situation,
35:10some reaction from teammates and, and head coach Zach Taylor.
35:13I'll have a game and analysis from this game as well in a column format.
35:17Um, I think we got a couple other stories up.
35:19One's a, an AP story, but yeah.
35:20A lot of stuff from, from today as well.
35:22And we'll have this podcast up, obviously.
35:24Yes.
35:25And we'll have this podcast up on, uh, uh, CLNS Cincy with a y.com.
35:30You can also, uh, obviously consume it on the jungle war podcast on youtube.com
35:35youtube.com slash at jungle war pod.
35:39Be sure to follow, uh, skinny on the X at local 12 skinny.
35:44Follow me at trags T R a G S.
35:47That'll be a wrap for this post game.
35:49Uh, the skinny local 12, um, jungle war Bengals post game rap from Kansas city.
35:56The chiefs win it on a last second field goal by a score of 26 to 25 for Richard
36:02Skinner, I'm Mike Petralia trags.
36:05Thanks for watching.
