00:00An empty car park at The Downs, near the former Bristol Zoo Garden site, could reopen soon,
00:07despite the threat of an expensive legal challenge if it does.
00:12The North Bristol car park, just off Clifton Down Road, next to The Downs, would become
00:18a pay and display site, but restricted to people visiting Durden Downs.
00:24But apart from a few signs, the restrictions are unlikely to be enforced, even though three
00:30years ago a High Court judge insisted the car park be kept for just Downs visitors.
00:36Legally, the car park could only be used temporarily for non-Downs activities until the end of
00:42last year.
00:44The Downs Committee, made up of councillors and members of the Society for Merchant Venturers,
00:48a business group, approved the changes on Monday, September 16th.
00:53The plans have faced some opposition from campaigners who are fighting the plans for
00:57a pay and display.
