00:00The National Maritime Council, or NMC, assures continued strategic presence in the West Philippine Sea.
00:07Meanwhile, the BCSO General Manager has been elected as Executive Committee Member of a Regional Lottery Association.
00:15These and more stories in tonight's National News Roundup by Kate Renya.
00:23The number of leptospirosis cases has gone down, according to the Department of Health,
00:28with reports from the Department of Health showing a drop of 77% from more than 1,000 cases from July 28 to August 10,
00:36to 396 cases from August 11 to 24, and a further decline to 124 cases from August 25 to September 7.
00:46However, the DOH warned this may change due to recent typhoons.
00:51As of September 7, there were 4,575 total cases reported since the year began,
00:58an increase of 11% from 4,112 infections last year, and 393 deaths, which is 17% fewer than last year.
01:08Only Central Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, or BARMM, saw increases.
01:16DOH Secretary Chedoro Herbosa thanked the Metro Manila Council's new rule banning swimming in floodwaters
01:24and emphasized the need for early detection and better hygiene practices.
01:28They advised the public to avoid floodwaters, care for wounds, wear protective shoes, and consult a doctor if exposed to floodwaters even without symptoms.
01:39Meanwhile, the National Maritime Council has confirmed of the Philippines' continued strong presence in Sabina or Escudachol and other areas of the West Philippine Sea.
01:49NMC spokesperson Undersecretary Alexander Lopez said that part of this strong presence includes 24-7 naval monitoring, aerial patrols, and Filipino fishermen may also help.
02:00The NMC believes there should be laws to increase the country's maritime assets.
02:05Lopez explained, the ocean area of the Philippines is much larger than its land area given its archipelagic makeup.
02:13Let's give a context. The ratio of land is to water is about 1 is to 7, meaning we have 300 square kilometers of land as against 2 million square kilometers of water.
02:31So that's how big the disparity between our water as to land is.
02:36Can you imagine, because the other side is also big, they can deploy that many. We should also be like that.
02:43If they are 60, we are also 60.
02:45So that we won't be bullied.
02:49PCSO General Manager Mel Robles is appointed as a member of the Executive Committee of the Asia-Pacific Lottery Association or APLA.
02:58APLA is a membership organization for lottery operators and suppliers in the region.
03:04His appointment was announced during the 2024 APLA Regional Conference held in Hanoi, Vietnam.
03:10In an interview, Robles thanked the other delegates for trusting him.
03:14He also mentioned that his fellow gaming leaders are happy with the initiatives the PCSO implements, which have resulted in increased income for the agency and more programs for the citizens.
03:26Robles is the first Filipino to join the committee and will serve until 2026.
03:31Kate Renya, from The National TV, for a new and better Philippines.
