00:00Now, on Wednesday, the UN Security Council highlighted the worsening of the crisis in
00:06the Sudanese Darfuri city of al-Fasha, where hundreds of thousands of civilians are trapped
00:10as the conflict escalates.
00:12Since the war between the army and the paramilitary RSF force broke out last April, tens of thousands
00:17of people have been killed across Sudan, and the spectre of famine has deepened the humanitarian
00:22crises triggered by the conflict.
00:25Two decades after Darfur suffered through genocide and war crimes at the hands of the
00:29Janjaweed Arab militia, who are the forerunners of the RSF, and al-Fasha is once again the
00:36site of horrific violence.
00:39Our regional correspondent brings us more.
00:44This isn't the first time that the UN Security Council has called on both sides to end the
00:49fighting in al-Fashir.
00:51But despite these numerous calls, the intense shelling and airstrikes continue.
00:56The UN Assistant Secretary General for Africa, Martha Pobey, has warned that both sides,
01:02the army and the paramilitary rapid support forces, have been violating humanitarian and
01:07human rights international law.
01:09These violations include assassinations, the detentions, and the torture of civilians.
01:16As the violence escalates in al-Fasha and continues to spread across the Sudan, the
01:22risk of atrocities multiply, including egregious violence against women.
01:29Both the SAF and RSF and their respective allied groups and militias continue to show
01:35complete disregard for international human rights and humanitarian law.
01:42Now the RSF reportedly launched a coordinated attack on al-Fashir from multiple directions
01:49and the army, which is positioned inside the city, responded and that response lasted days.
01:56In the last few months, the civilians in al-Fashir and 700,000 people who've been displaced
02:03from other parts of Sudan have been under siege inside the city with little or no access
02:09to humanitarian aid.
02:11Both sides have been accused of blocking humanitarian aid from entering the city and in recent weeks
02:16that situation has been made even more complicated because of the heavy rains and flooding.
02:23But that humanitarian aid is very much needed.
02:27In refugee camps just outside al-Fashir, hundreds of thousands of people have been declared
02:33in a situation of famine and children are dying every hour.
