00:00Manufacturers of essential food items such as sliced bread, canned sardines, detergent soap
00:06are crying for a much-needed and past-due hike in prices.
00:10But the Department of Trade and Industry, or DTI, says to hold their horses,
00:14admonishing them that any pan-raise in prices should not exceed 10% of the sticker price.
00:20Our Klais Elpardilla tells us more.
00:25A can of sardines is a staple for a boy and his family
00:29when budgets are tight.
00:43According to the Department of Trade and Industry, manufacturers of 60 shelf-keeping units
00:48have submitted requests for price adjustments, citing increased costs of raw materials
00:55and logistics as the driving factors behind their need for higher prices.
00:59This includes items like sardines, bread, water bottles, and detergent soap.
01:04The Canned Sardines Association of the Philippines has been awaiting approval
01:10for a P3 price increase on sardines for a year, prompted by soaring production costs,
01:16including those for tamban, tin cans, and petroleum products.
01:25The Association of Small Bakeries stressed the no adjustment on the price of bread listed
01:46in the SRP bulletin by the DTI has significantly impacted their business.
01:55The low price of Pinoy Tasty helps consumers.
02:00They should look at this as a basis for us, the small players, to ask our customers,
02:09why Pinoy Tasty and Pinoy Pandesal are cheap?
02:12Why the community baker, Pandesal, is not a high price?
02:18It affects our business if the price of Pinoy Tasty and Pinoy Pandesal is low
02:23because it becomes a point of comparison.
02:25The DTI will review the requests for price adjustments,
02:28but will not approve increases exceeding 10 percent.
02:31We need to really balance everything to be able to come up
02:34with a correct decision whether to increase the price or not.
02:40The agency plans to intensify its price monitoring of essential goods.
02:49During a recent inspection at a supermarket in Quezon City,
02:53the DTI found the inspected products were compliant with the suggested retail price.
02:58Kaley Zalpardilla for the new and bettered Philippines.
