01:00Halloween is really a special time, isn't it ?
01:03Especially for me.
01:05You can see why if you know who I am.
01:08Look up a little.
01:10That's me, a jack-o'-lantern.
01:13At Halloween time every year, I sit up here and watch everybody go by.
01:17It's a nice and scary time, isn't it ?
01:19All those wonderful costumes and masks and make-up.
01:23I think about how much fun Halloween is.
01:26I also worry a little bit about the things that can spoil the fun of Halloween.
01:31Those kinds of things scare me too.
01:34But in a different way.
01:36For instance, look next door.
01:38That's where Cory lives.
01:40Cory, have you got that pumpkin ready yet ?
01:43Cory is going to carve a pumpkin with her dad.
01:45This pumpkin weighs 50 pounds.
01:49That's a big one, it probably weighs close to that.
01:52Probably.
01:53Come on here and set it down.
01:55I'll get the paper straightened out.
01:57How's that ?
01:58That's fine.
02:00Have you decided what kind of face you're going to make on it yet ?
02:02A happy face.
02:04Now a pumpkin is not easy to carve.
02:07I know that.
02:08You need the proper tools.
02:10But first you have to draw a face that you can carve.
02:14Cory is doing that.
02:17That's a nice pumpkin face.
02:19Thank you.
02:20Let's see if we can cut the top off now.
02:23Then you cut the top off so you can scoop out the insides.
02:27It takes a sharp knife.
02:29And you know sharp knives can be dangerous if they're not used right.
02:33I'm glad that Cory's father is helping her.
02:35It's much safer that way.
02:38Eager to get inside ?
02:40Go ahead and pull that off.
02:45You ever seen the inside of a pumpkin before ?
02:47Yeah.
02:49Not that way.
02:50Now comes the fun part.
02:52Start cleaning it out.
02:54Getting my inside scooped out tickles me.
02:57It would tickle you too if you were a pumpkin.
03:02So far it's been fun.
03:04But look at Cory's hand.
03:06Kind of gooey, isn't it ?
03:08Cory is going to carve the face with a small knife.
03:11Can you imagine how that knife could slip and maybe cut her ?
03:16I hope Cory will do the safe thing.
03:27Good, that's a lot better.
03:30A clean, dry hand can hold a knife safely.
03:33And cut with it safely too.
03:36Cut slowly, carefully, in small slices.
03:39And always cut away from yourself.
03:42Thank you.
03:44Make sure there's an adult or someone a lot older than you
03:47who can help you if you need help.
03:49That's the safe way to carve a pumpkin.
03:52I'm glad Cory isn't going to spoil her Halloween fun.
03:55Carve carefully.
03:57That's one way to have a Halloween that's fun and safe.
04:01But what about having a candle burning inside your pumpkin ?
04:05Well, I'm sitting on brick.
04:07But a candle and a pumpkin on a wooden porch might not be safe at all.
04:11A flashlight could be a lot safer then.
04:14But it's best to stay away from lighted candles
04:16that are inside or outside of jack-o'-lanterns.
04:19You know why.
04:21Well, not everybody carves a pumpkin on Halloween.
04:24But just about everybody does dress up in a costume.
04:27For instance, look across the street there.
04:32Do you see what I see ?
04:34That robot is Jeremy in his costume.
04:42Oh, Jessica, it's you ! How do you like my costume ?
04:46You look great !
04:48Well, it may look great from the outside.
04:51But from the inside, things don't look very good at all.
04:54Jeremy can't see very well with his robot head on.
04:57And I don't think the rest of his costume lets him walk very well.
05:00He can't bend his knees.
05:03How are you going to walk in that thing ?
05:06I don't know.
05:11It's hard for Jeremy to keep his balance.
05:14If Jeremy went out like that,
05:16he might keep losing his balance all the time.
05:19He might fall down just anywhere, and probably everywhere.
05:22Sidewalks hurt you when you fall on them, and so do streets.
05:26And streets are especially dangerous to fall down on.
05:29Jeremy has to be able to walk better
05:32if he doesn't want to spoil his Halloween fun.
05:36There, that's better.
05:38A costume shouldn't make you trip or fall. That's not safe.
05:41It should be easy for you to move in your costume.
05:44And you have to be able to see where you're going.
05:47A mask that makes it hard to see could get you into all kinds of trouble.
05:51There, that's much better.
05:54Jeremy can see well now, and move safely in his costume too.
06:00Oh, but look at Jessica.
06:02She can't see much with her mask on.
06:06It's too big for me.
06:09A monster needs an ugly face.
06:11But does it have to be a mask?
06:14Make-up can be just as good,
06:16and it's always just the right size for you.
06:19Just don't get it in your eyes.
06:23If you're not too good at putting on make-up,
06:26get an adult to help you.
06:28Make sure your mask and costume let you see well and walk well,
06:32and they won't spoil your fun on Halloween.
06:35Of course, the reason you get all dressed up at Halloween
06:38is so you can have fun going trick-or-treating.
06:45And I like to see all the children out in their costumes.
06:48But when I see them,
06:50I always hope they don't forget all they know about crossing streets safely.
06:54And I hope you don't either.
06:56That's especially important when drivers can't see you well.
06:59And for you to see the cars well,
07:01it's a good idea to take off your mask when you cross.
07:04Even though it may not be night yet,
07:07it's dark enough to make things outdoors hard to see,
07:10you and the cars.
07:12It makes me so happy when I see children look to their left for cars,
07:16then right for cars,
07:18then left again before they cross.
07:23You mustn't forget all the safety rules you know on Halloween,
07:26and especially because it's dark.
07:28It's safest not to cross between parked cars.
07:31That can be very dangerous.
07:35And don't cut across yards or empty lots.
07:38When it's dark, you can't see what's there.
07:43Remembering safety rules is very important on Halloween.
07:47There's something else that can help keep you safe outside when it's dark.
07:51You'll see right away.
07:54Yes, just as I thought.
07:56They're coming up my walk now.
07:58The people who live in my house like to take pictures of the children who come by.
08:12Now you'll see what there is about their costumes
08:14that makes it easier for drivers to see them when it's dark.
08:18Do you see how easy it is to see the bright colors in the costumes?
08:22Bright colors are easier to see at night than dark colors are.
08:25But there's something else.
08:27Some parts seem to glow from the camera flash.
08:30That's how those parts will look when car headlights shine on them.
08:36Those are just pieces of special tape that reflect light very well.
08:40You can put tape like that on your costume and on your trick-or-treat bag.
08:44Some costumes already have reflecting material on them.
08:48Making your costume and your bag easy to see makes you easy to see,
08:52and that's a good way to help make Halloween safe.
08:55The safer Halloween is, the more fun it is, for you and for me.
09:00That's what I think.
09:02But some people have a strange idea of fun.
09:06They think it's fun to mess up other people's things with paint.
09:12They don't think about how the people feel whose things are ruined.
09:17And some people think it's fun to throw things at cars and houses and buildings.
09:24But the people whose things they're messing up don't.
09:27I don't either.
09:29It isn't fun to spoil other people's things and make them unhappy.
09:33Some people even think it's fun to smash pumpkins.
09:39Oh no, that's not fun.
09:41Not for all the people who work so hard carving pumpkins.
09:44And especially not for us pumpkins.
09:50Wow, that was close.
09:53Some people don't know what fun really is.
09:55I do, and I'll bet you do too.
09:58And I know they do.
10:00Trick-or-treating is always fun.
10:02But there are some things you should remember to help keep it fun.
10:05One thing is to always go out with friends.
10:08And have an adult come along too.
10:10Don't expect to be alone.
10:13Trick-or-treating!
10:15And if someone you don't know very well invites you in...
10:18Would you like to come in? I have more treats inside.
10:21No, thank you.
10:23That's right. Say, no thanks.
10:26And don't eat the treats while you're collecting them.
10:29Stay in your own neighborhood.
10:31Don't get too far from home.
10:33Trick-or-treating!
10:36Trick-or-treating!
10:38Trick-or-treating!
10:42Don't worry, you'll collect enough treats.
10:48People are expecting you.
10:52And even if you don't stop at houses with no outside lights on,
10:56which you shouldn't, you'll have a wonderful time at Halloween.
11:01Some of you will probably still be out when it's really dark.
11:04That's when flashlights are an especially good idea.
11:07To help you watch out for places you might fall or stumble over
11:10if you didn't see them.
11:12But remember, don't shine those flashlights into anybody's eyes.
11:16Especially a driver's eyes.
11:18That could be dangerous.
11:21It isn't hard to have a safe Halloween.
11:27Just look how easy it is to see those children when they cross.
11:31They wouldn't want an accident to spoil their Halloween fun.
11:34I wouldn't want that to happen either.
11:37Trick-or-treating is almost over this Halloween
11:40for Cory and Jessica and Jeremy.
11:42It's almost time for them to head for home.
11:46But what do you do with all the treats you've collected?
11:49A lot of them are things to eat, of course.
11:51But you don't eat them all.
11:53At least not right away, that's for sure.
11:57And there might be some you won't want to eat at all.
12:00Get a grown-up to help you decide.
12:02Or at least someone a lot older than you.
12:05You see, some people think it's fun to play tricks with your treats.
12:09Watch out for candy wrappers that have been torn or punctured.
12:13That might be a sign of tampering.
12:17There might be things in the candy,
12:19so break open candy bars before you eat them.
12:22Cut fruit into pieces before you eat it,
12:25just in case something's been stuck in it.
12:29Watch out for things that look like candy,
12:31but might be medicines or drugs, or even poisons.
12:35Don't eat anything that doesn't look right.
12:38If it looks funny, it might not be so funny if you ate it.
12:42Treats are so much fun to collect,
12:44it'd be awful to have them spoil your Halloween fun
12:47by making you sick.
12:49Cory's treats won't make her sick,
12:51and I hope yours won't make you sick either.
12:54I hope you can have the most fun you've ever had this Halloween.
12:58Halloween can be a scary time.
13:00Not because of witches or ghosts that we know aren't real,
13:04but because of real things that can spoil our fun.
13:07Just remember these few important things I've told you about.
13:11Carve your pumpkin carefully.
13:15Make sure that you can see.
13:19And make sure people can see you.
13:23Remember all your safety rules,
13:25and take off your mask when you cross a street.
13:31Trick or treat in your own neighborhood,
13:33and don't keep any treats that don't look right.
13:38If you can do all that,
13:40then you won't have to worry about scary real things
13:43happening on Halloween, right?
13:46Right.
