Patriots Head Coach Jerod Mayo joins!
Any info to announce after the team meeting? Was Mayo able to find positives from the Jets game? Who is starting?
Transcript
00:00And here he is, Gerard Mayo.
00:01Good morning, Gerard.
00:03Good morning.
00:04How are you guys?
00:04Great.
00:05How are you?
00:06I'm doing well.
00:07I saw Wiggy walking up this morning.
00:10Where are you?
00:10Are you guys in the studio or not?
00:14If you guys are in the studio, I'll walk down there.
00:17No, we're in Brighton.
00:21Wiggy did not pay attention to his coach
00:25here at the radio station.
00:27Let me ask you.
00:2999 and 1.
00:3099 and 1.
00:34A guy doesn't listen to his coach
00:36and goes to the wrong location for practice,
00:39I'm assuming that he would be sat or something like that.
00:41Am I right about that?
00:42Hey, man.
00:45I live that life.
00:46I live that life.
00:47You've got to get the one back with the group.
00:49So it's all good.
00:50I was showing up for maybe a walk-on tryout.
00:53No one was there though.
00:54No one was there.
00:58I know you had a meeting with the guys.
00:59Anything important that you need to announce on this show
01:03as a result of that or no?
01:06Not at all.
01:07We have normal squad meetings almost every day.
01:11So today is a bonus day for us and kind of went
01:14through some corrections from the last game.
01:16I put some things into perspective
01:18that it's early in the season.
01:19And we're still trying to figure this thing out
01:23as a coaching staff, as players.
01:24And we'll get better when we talk about the North Star.
01:27We just got to get better every single weekend.
01:30Thursday night obviously wasn't reflective of the things
01:32that we talked about.
01:33So I also took them through some of the storylines
01:38around the league that started back in the spring.
01:40Super Bowl contenders are just the Steelers.
01:44They went 0-2 in the preseason.
01:45Everyone are 0-ing whatever in the preseason.
01:48And everyone was panicking.
01:49You guys are sitting there at 3-0.
01:51So it's the NFL.
01:52And any given Sunday, teams can go out there and perform
01:56and win a game.
01:57And we just need more consistency across the board.
02:00Now that you've had some time to digest and reflect and watch
02:04film, is Thursday night still as ugly
02:08as it looked in real time?
02:10Or are you able to take some positives out of that?
02:14I'll be honest.
02:15Thursday was a very ugly day and ugly game.
02:19The one thing we always hang our hat on
02:21is being able to control the line of scrimmage.
02:23And you guys have heard me say it time and time again.
02:25Couldn't do that.
02:26We just, going back to the wiggy thing with the 99-1
02:30or the 10-1, you've got 10 guys out there
02:32doing the right thing.
02:33If one guy doesn't do the right thing, then it's a bad play.
02:36And it can cost you.
02:37And that's the, I wish I had a crystal ball
02:40to tell guys when it's going to be a huge play.
02:43And I just don't have it.
02:45It's important that we maintain our focus every single play.
02:48Gerard, one of the things that you talked about
02:50was wanting to just push the ball downfield,
02:53maybe taking advantage of that 15 to 20-yard football area
02:59where you can get involved in the passing game there.
03:01You guys averaged 1.8 yards per pass.
03:05What do you think you have to do differently
03:08to get this passing game going, especially
03:11to that intermediate and deeper shots down the field?
03:16Yeah, we try to get to the play action end
03:18because we have been running the ball so effectively.
03:20So, you know, we tried to get into that intermediate
03:23through the play action games.
03:24It just didn't work out.
03:25We couldn't protect the quarterback,
03:27you know, whether we're talking about boot plays
03:29or play action or anything like that.
03:30And, you know, it was a struggle all game.
03:32And the more I learn about this team and our identity,
03:36the more, you know, you sit there and say,
03:38we have to control the clock.
03:40We have to control the ball and the line of scrimmage.
03:42And that's through running the ball.
03:44Now, in saying that, we have to be able to throw the ball,
03:47you know, off of those run plays and give teams,
03:50you know, keep teams off balance.
03:52Gerard, while I'm sure you don't want...
03:53I don't want to, I will say, I will, sorry,
03:55I will say this, like, I don't want to,
03:57you know, I'm not going to sit here
03:58and just focus on the offense.
03:59Like what happened against the Jets,
04:01I mean, it was all three phases.
04:02It was coaching as well.
04:03And, you know, I take, I'm the first one to raise my hand
04:06and take responsibility for, you know,
04:08the team that we put out there on Thursday night.
04:11While I'm sure you don't want it,
04:13I'm sure you can learn a lot about the guys
04:15that you do have on your team after a loss like that.
04:18Standing here today, what have you learned about them?
04:23Well, it's still early.
04:24So we practice later on today.
04:26And, you know, my message to the team, once again,
04:28is, you know, win, lose, or draw,
04:30we have to turn the page
04:31and we have to play better football.
04:33And that's kind of what we talked about this morning.
04:36And we could have easily, you know, I shouldn't say easily,
04:39but, you know, the Seattle game,
04:41that could have been another win.
04:43And, you know, sitting here at two on one,
04:44I think people feel a lot better,
04:45but that's not the case.
04:47And we can't go back and replay that game.
04:51It's about looking forward.
04:52And today it's really all about NEP.
04:54It's about the Patriots
04:55and it has nothing to do with anyone else.
04:57It's about things that continue to show up on film
04:59that cost us.
05:00And that's what we're going to focus on today
05:02before we get into the next game.
05:04Jerron, immediately following the Thursday night game,
05:07you said that everybody is going to be evaluated individually
05:13and that you hadn't spoken with the coaching staff yet
05:15related to the quarterback.
05:17And then Friday morning on the Zoom call,
05:20you said you're a hundred percent behind Jacoby.
05:22What shifted from the end of that game Thursday night
05:26and then the next morning where you were much more assertive
05:29in discussing the quarterback position?
05:30Well, no, that's a great question.
05:32I couldn't sleep.
05:33And so I watched all the film, all three phases,
05:36you know, through the wee hours of the morning.
05:38And after watching the film,
05:40I still feel that Jacoby gives us the best chance
05:43to win football games.
05:44And we're a hundred percent behind that decision.
05:46Now, when you-
05:47What did you see from Drake May though?
05:49You got to see, you know,
05:50his first regular season NFL action, four minutes there.
05:54What did you see and what did you like and not like?
05:58No, I would say first, you know,
05:59the one thing I liked was just the toughness.
06:01You know, he took a couple of hits when he was in there.
06:03He also made some plays with his feet,
06:05which I thought was very encouraging.
06:07And just like, you know, on the other side,
06:09just like any other, you know, working quarterback
06:12without a lot of experience there were times,
06:15you know, you see him looking at the rush
06:16and that's a natural thing.
06:17And he just has to get over that hump
06:19and that comes with more playing time.
06:20And when you talk about,
06:22cause you had said that, you know,
06:23it's always a competition, everybody's competing,
06:26even though you're at the point right now and you say,
06:28all right, Jacoby gives us the best chance to win this week.
06:32Is it still something that where you're going to see,
06:35you know, Drake getting opportunities in practice?
06:37And is it still really a week to week thing
06:40with Jacoby Persep?
06:43I would say, look, Jacoby's our quarterback.
06:46I don't want to really deal with the hypotheticals,
06:48but I will say, yeah, every position is a competition.
06:52And once again, I just think
06:54that Jacoby gives us our best chance.
06:57Can you evaluate?
06:58And that's the balance.
07:01So that's the balance.
07:02And yeah, the next question you're going to ask,
07:04can you, you know, have a true evaluation of Drake
07:07if he's not getting the, let's say 50-50 split
07:10and I think we can.
07:11And once again, because he's not out there,
07:14you know, all the time with the ones,
07:16he is, you know, getting a lot of reps out there
07:18on the field and we'll evaluate those reps.
07:21Well, I was going to say, can he get a true-
07:22Whether it's the showtime or anything like that,
07:24but go ahead, sorry.
07:25No, I was going to say, can you get a true evaluation
07:28of the two of them with the offensive line
07:32the way it is currently constructed?
07:36You know, I would say it's tough.
07:37It's tough at this point.
07:40And saying that, you know, when you look at our team,
07:42you know, these guys, the offensive line,
07:45you know, we struggled a little bit in protection.
07:47I would say, you know, going back to the Seattle game,
07:49the first half protection was a lot better
07:51than the second half protection.
07:52So even with that, you know, with those moving pieces,
07:55we're still trying to figure out, all right,
07:57who are the best five to protect the quarterback
08:00and then we'll go from there.
08:01I'm an overthinker.
08:02So I've been asking this question a lot,
08:04but you know, Drake better than anybody else.
08:08Do you, does it worry you at all
08:10that he may overthink the four minutes
08:11that he had in game action
08:13if he doesn't see the field again for quite some time?
08:19It doesn't worry me.
08:20You know, he's one of these guys that, you know,
08:22he comes in here with good energy every day
08:24and he's going to take full advantage
08:26of every whip that he gets.
08:27This guy just loves football and I can appreciate that.
08:30Jerrod, in the week leading up to the Thursday night game
08:33or the two to three days from Sunday to Thursday,
08:36Pop Douglas made his feelings known
08:38that he was unhappy with the number of touches he had
08:42in the first two games.
08:44Any concern that you reward the behavior
08:47of a player speaking out about their involvement
08:49with an immediate sign in the next game
08:53of getting him the ball right away?
08:55One thing I would say is, you know,
08:57I can appreciate all the players that, you know,
09:00have the ability to touch the football,
09:01the receivers, the backs, whoever it is,
09:03wanting to have the ball in their hand.
09:05I definitely appreciate,
09:07even when those guys are frustrated, I understand that.
09:10And now I'm saying that we have to do what's best
09:12for the whole and that's a game plan week by week situation
09:16and we'll see how it is going forward.
09:19Jerrod, you played the game, I played the game.
09:21And when you talk about the offensive line struggles,
09:26what is it that you're seeing on film
09:28that is creating this issues?
09:30Are guys not winning their one-on-one battles
09:33because A, they're just not good enough
09:36or because it's poor technique
09:37or they bring in more that you can block
09:39or they're not able to pick up, you know,
09:42whether it's twist or games,
09:44what is the issue that is giving your O-line
09:48so many problems, especially in pass protection?
09:52Yeah, no, I'm glad you said that in pass protection
09:55because in the long game, it's totally different.
09:57I would say in pass pro, I think the fundamental issue
09:59is that we all just have to be on the same page
10:01and see the front through the same set of goggles.
10:04And we're still trying to work through that.
10:06So it's not one particular person on every snap.
10:10It's one here, one there, one there.
10:11And that's always difficult to get straightened out.
10:13But that's our job.
10:15That's my job.
10:16And that's a challenge or an opportunity
10:18that we look forward to correcting.
10:20Kraft was on the field before the game
10:22and said that he had picked you
10:23as the next head coach five years ago.
10:25Was that news to you
10:26or were you on the same page five years ago?
10:30I wasn't on the same page five years ago.
10:33So he kept that one close to the vest.
10:37Time now for the Hellman's Mayo question of the week.
10:39You can purchase Hellman's at your local Walmart
10:42or grocery store and add extra deliciousness
10:45and creamy flavor to your game day dishes
10:47this football season.
10:49Drake May said he hung around at the end of that game
10:54so he could speak to the GOAT, meaning Aaron Rodgers.
10:59Have you given him a little bit
11:00of a New England Patriot history lesson
11:03as to who the GOAT is?
11:07You know, we all have our favorite players growing up.
11:10You know, growing up for me,
11:12Lawrence Taylor was my favorite player.
11:14Bo Jackson was my favorite player.
11:16I really didn't have a favorite player
11:18on New England until I got here.
11:21Who was it when you got here?
11:22Was it Tip?
11:24Tip, I'm not that old.
11:25You think I'm as old as you?
11:26No, I'm saying when you got here, Willie Mack?
11:28Tip had got inducted into the Hall of Fame
11:30at that point in time.
11:32I was a big Brewski, Brady, Randy Moss fan.
11:39I was a big Ben Coates fan, so.
11:40Who was the guy, Jerrod, when you first entered
11:44that locker room on a team that had just come
11:48two minutes away from a perfect season,
11:50who was the guy, if there was one,
11:51that you got starstruck by?
11:55No, I wasn't on that team.
11:56Remember, I came the year after.
11:57Right, when you came in in 08.
12:00Yeah, so I came in in 08, and I'm just like a silly rookie.
12:05I was like, well, I might be the missing piece
12:06for that one game, but first game,
12:09that was the Brady game, I was like, oh, shoot.
12:11But we still had a good team,
12:12won a bunch of games that year,
12:13and I wouldn't say I was so much starstruck by anyone,
12:17but I was very appreciative of the defensive line
12:20with Vince Wilford, Ty Warren, Richard Seymour,
12:23and being able to play with those guys.
12:26All right, well, we'll let you get to work
12:28and get ready to head out and head to the West Coast,
12:31and we appreciate you taking the time.
12:32As always, Jerrod Mayo.
12:35Appreciate it.
12:36Is we gonna drive up over there, or?
12:38He's actually gonna drive to San Francisco.
12:41Oh, he's gonna miss the flight.
12:45Oh, I missed the flight.
12:46All right, guys, take care.
12:47Get a spot for me, I'll jump on the team plane.
12:50Just let me get a check.
12:52I mean, I'm hoping that we'll be
12:56I don't know what the,
12:57I assume that you'll be right in there
13:00bright and early Monday morning,
13:01even after coming back from the West Coast.
13:03So maybe we'll be with you.
13:04Whatever you guys need.
13:05Okay.
13:06I'll just stay awake.
13:07All right, coach.
13:08All right, thank you. Take care.
13:09All right.
13:10There he is.
