Carabao Cup: Wycombe 1 Aston Villa 2 - Matt Maher analysis
Transcript
00:00Good evening from Adams Park where it finished. Wickham 1, Villa 2, Unai Emery's team through to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a tight fought win over their League 1 hosts.
00:15David Buendia scoring his first goal in 18 months and what was his first start since returning from serious knee injury and then John Duran who else getting what proved to be the winner as Richard Kone smashed home for the hosts with virtually the last kick of the game.
00:31Duran's fifth goal of the season, four of them now have been match winners and this one was by far the most controversial. Wickham manager Matt Bloomfield saying his team felt a bit aggrieved at the award of the penalty. It didn't look like there was any contact between Duran and the goalkeeper.
00:48Duran got back up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way. I think aggrieved is a very diplomatic way of putting it for the hosts. Villa can count themselves a bit fortunate on that score and they did just about enough over the course of the 90 minutes to see off their hosts.
01:10Unai Emery naming a team which had players making their first starts of the season, the likes of Buendia, Ross Barkley, Ian Martson and of course Duran along with academy players and half of the 20-man squad was made up of young players and Sil Swinkles and Lamar Bogard, a youthful centre-back pairing and it just about worked.
01:33Unai Emery has made it quite clear that the Carabao Cup is the bottom of his priorities with Villa in the Premier League and the Champions League but it does represent a trophy and the feeling was if Villa could get through or if they can get through these early rounds then they're probably going to start taking the competition a bit more seriously and putting out a stronger side.
01:52It's all about winning for Unai Emery, this was one of those games where they ideally wanted to win but they didn't want to risk too many players by doing so. The likes of Oli Watkins, Luca Dinha, Morgan Rodgers weren't here at all and Villa's patchwork team did just about enough on the night.
